Keywords: dead oil viscosity, Machine Learning, PVT properties, SuperLearner, viscosity
Dead oil viscosity is a critical parameter to solve numerous reservoir engineering problems and one of the most unreliable properties to predict with classical black oil correlations. Determination of dead oil viscosity by experiments is expensive and time-consuming, which means developing an accurate and quick prediction model is required. This paper implements six machine learning models: random forest (RF), lightgbm, XGBoost, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network, stochastic real-valued (SRV) and SuperLearner to predict dead oil viscosity. More than 2000 pressure−volume−temperature (PVT) data were used for developing and testing these models. A huge range of viscosity data were used, from light intermediate to heavy oil. In this study, we give insight into the performance of different functional forms that have been used in the literature to formulate dead oil viscosity. The results show that the functional form f(γAPI,T), has the best performance, and additional correlating pa... [more]

Keywords: day-ahead and intra-day collaborative scheduling, demand response, integrated energy system, multi-energy network, PV power generation
An integrated energy system (IES) shows great potential in reducing the terminal energy supply cost and improving energy efficiency, but the operation scheduling of an IES, especially integrated with inter-connected multiple energy stations, is rather complex since it is affected by various factors. Toward a comprehensive operation scheduling of multiple energy stations, in this paper, a day-ahead and intra-day collaborative operation model is proposed. The targeted IES consists of electricity, gas, and thermal systems. First, the energy flow and equipment composition of the IES are analyzed, and a detailed operation model of combined equipment and networks is established. Then, with the objective of minimizing the total expected operation cost, a robust optimization of day-ahead and intra-day scheduling for energy stations is constructed subject to equipment operation constraints, network constraints, and so on. The day-ahead operation provides start-up and shut-down scheduling of uni... [more]

Keywords: exhaust emissions, passenger cars, real driving emissions
The paper describes the methodology of research of exhaust emissions from a combustion engine under engine states determined by the vehicle actual operation in the RDE test. The processes of quantities determining the vehicle motion and engine states have been recorded, along with the exhaust emission intensity. Based on the developed research methodology, zero-dimensional characteristics of the processes of the emission intensity have been determined under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. The authors also determined the average specific distance exhaust emissions under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. Based on the above results, the unique characteristics of the relation of the average specific distance emissions and the average vehicle speed have been obtained. The obtained characteristics may be used in the modeling of exhaust emissions from motor vehicles under actual traffic condi... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 5G, cooperative communications, cooperative phase steering, industrial IoT, outage probability, spectrum sharing, wireless sensor networks
For the next generation of manufacturing, the industrial internet of things (IoT) has been considered as a key technology that enables smart factories, in which sensors transfer measured data, actuators are controlled, and systems are connected wirelessly. In particular, the wireless sensor network (WSN) needs to operate with low cost, low power (energy), and narrow spectrum, which are the most technical challenges for industrial IoT networks. In general, a relay-assisted communication network has been known to overcome scarce energy problems, and a spectrum-sharing technique has been considered as a promising technique for the radio spectrum shortage problem. In this paper, we propose a phase steering based hybrid cooperative relaying (PSHCR) technique for the generic relay-assisted spectrum-shared WSN, which consists of a secondary transmitter, multiple secondary relays (SRs), a secondary access point, and multiple primary access points. Basically, SRs in the proposed PSHCR technique... [more]
Energy Pathways for Future Norwegian Residential Building Areas
Natasa Nord, Yiyu Ding, Ola Skrautvol, Stian Fossmo Eliassen
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building requirements, building stock, energy planning, energy supply, residential buildings
Owing to stricter building energy requirements, future buildings will be characterized by low base loads and occasional high peaks. However, future building areas will still contain existing and historical buildings with high energy demand. Meanwhile, there is a requirement that future building areas should obtain energy from renewable energy sources, while existing buildings need to be transited to renewables. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop an approach for modelling energy pathways for future Norwegian residential building areas by analyzing different energy supply systems. Several calculation methods were combined: building simulation, energy supply technology simulation, heat demand aggregation, and data post-processing. The results showed that the energy pathways would be very dependent on CO2-factors for energy sources, and it is hard to predict accurate CO2-factors. An increasing housing stock development would slightly increase the CO2 emissions towards 2050, al... [more]
Fossil vs. Active Geothermal Systems: A Field and Laboratory Method to Disclose the Relationships between Geothermal Fluid Flow and Geological Structures at Depth
Domenico Liotta, Andrea Brogi, Giovanni Ruggieri, Martina Zucchi
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fieldwork, geothermal systems, hydrothermal veins, structural geology
Comparison between fossil and analogue active geothermal systems permit to obtain key-parameters to define a conceptual model of the area under exploration. The approach is based on structural, kinematic, and fluid inclusions analyses. The fossil system is investigated to describe the distribution of the hydrothermal mineralization as witness of the fluid flow through geological structures and bodies, at depth. Structural and kinematic data (to define the preferential direction of fluid flow) are collected in structural stations and by scan lines and scan boxes on key outcrops. Distribution, length, width of fractures, and hydrothermal veins bring to evaluate permeability in the fossil system and, by analogy, in the deep roots of the active system. Fluid inclusions analysis shed light on density, viscosity, and temperature of the paleo-fluids. Data integration provides the hydraulic conductivity. In active geothermal systems, fieldwork is addressed to paleo-stress analysis with data fr... [more]
Coopetitive Nature of Energy Communities—The Energy Transition Context

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: coopetition, energy cooperatives, management, Renewable Energy Communities, renewable energy sources
The decentralization of the large-scale energy sector, its replacement with pro-ecological, dispersed production sources and building a citizen dimension of the energy sector are the directional objectives of the energy transformation in the European Union. Building energy self-sufficiency at a local level is possible, based on the so-called Energy Communities, which include energy clusters and energy cooperatives. Several dozen pilot projects for energy clusters have been implemented in Poland, while energy cooperatives, despite being legally sanctioned and potentially a simpler formula of operation, have not functioned in practice. This article presents the coopetitive nature of Energy Communities. The authors analysed the principles and benefits of creating Energy Communities from a regulatory and practical side. An important element of the analysis is to indicate the managerial, coopetitive nature of the strategies implemented within the Energy Communities. Their members, while ope... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: convection, diffusion coefficient, drying, wood biomass
Determination of the mass diffusion coefficient for dried, inhomogeneous material is difficult as it depends on the drying agent temperature and the moisture content and physical structure of the material. The paper presents a method for efficient determination of the water diffusion coefficient for wood solid cuboids dried using convective drying methods. In this work, the authors define a theoretical dependence of the Fourier number on reduced water content in a convectively dried cuboidal solid, based on a simplified theoretical solution of the diffusion equation for such a body. The material for drying included shoots of common osier, robinia (false acacia), multiflora rose, and energy poplar, dried at temperatures of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C, in free convection. The obtained results differ from the theoretically anticipated changes of the coefficient.

Gyun Seob Song, Man Cheol Kim
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytic solutions, fault tree analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic safety assessment, uncertainty analysis
Monte Carlo simulations are widely used for uncertainty analysis in the probabilistic safety assessment of nuclear power plants. Despite many advantages, such as its general applicability, a Monte Carlo simulation has inherent limitations as a simulation-based approach. This study provides a mathematical formulation and analytic solutions for the uncertainty analysis in a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). Starting from the definitions of variables, mathematical equations are derived for synthesizing probability density functions for logical AND, logical OR, and logical OR with rare event approximation of two independent events. The equations can be applied consecutively when there exist more than two events. For fail-to-run failures, the probability density function for the unavailability has the same probability distribution as the probability density function (PDF) for the failure rate under specified conditions. The effectiveness of the analytic solutions is demonstrated by app... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive frequency hopping, bluetooth, frequency hopping, spectrum sensing, wireless security
Thanks to the frequency hopping nature of Bluetooth, sniffing Bluetooth traffic with low-cost devices has been considered as a challenging problem. To this end, BlueEar, a state-of-the-art low-cost sniffing system with two Bluetooth radios proposes a set of novel machine learning-based subchannel classification techniques for adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) map prediction by collecting packet statistics and spectrum sensing. However, there is no explicit evaluation results on the accuracy of BlueEar’s AFH map prediction. To this end, in this paper, we revisit the spectrum sensing-based classifier, one of the subchannel classification techniques in BlueEar. At first, we build an independent implementation of the spectrum sensing-based classifier with one Ubertooth sniffing radio. Using the implementation, we conduct a subchannel classification experiment with several machine learning classifiers where spectrum features are utilized. Our results show that higher accuracy can be achieved... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air conditioning, borehole heat exchanger, experimental, gas injection, peak load
The objective of this work is to analyze a gas injection borehole heat exchanger coupled with a desiccant assisted air conditioning system during cooling and heating operation. A common problem that occurs in air conditioning systems is peak loads, during which the cooling or heating power of the soil can be exceeded. To counteract this drawback, a gas injection borehole heat exchanger, which is capable of creating artificial groundwater flow along the heat exchanger by inducing a pressure difference inside the well, is used. Experimental results of the performance differences between a conventional and a gas injection borehole heat exchanger are presented. Under the same inlet conditions, a reduction in the outlet temperature of up to 2 °C is achieved compared with an equivalent conventional borehole heat exchanger in cooling mode. The maximum cooling power is increased by 26%. As a result, a fast and dynamic responding control of the heat transfer between the heat exchanger and the s... [more]

Keywords: acceleration sensor, behavior recognition, feature extraction, wearable device
Wearable devices used for human body monitoring has broad applications in smart home, sports, security and other fields. Wearable devices provide an extremely convenient way to collect a large amount of human motion data. In this paper, the human body acceleration feature extraction method based on wearable devices is studied. Firstly, Butterworth filter is used to filter the data. Then, in order to ensure the extracted feature value more accurately, it is necessary to remove the abnormal data in the source. This paper combines Kalman filter algorithm with a genetic algorithm and use the genetic algorithm to code the parameters of the Kalman filter algorithm. We use Standard Deviation (SD), Interval of Peaks (IoP) and Difference between Adjacent Peaks and Troughs (DAPT) to analyze seven kinds of acceleration. At last, SisFall data set, which is a globally available data set for study and experiments, is used for experiments to verify the effectiveness of our method. Based on simulation... [more]
npTrack: A n-Position Single Axis Solar Tracker Model for Optimized Energy Collection
Manoel Henriques de Sá Campos, Chigueru Tiba
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discrete solar tracker loss modeling, n-position single-axis solar tracker, PV discrete solar tracker, single-axis photovoltaic solar tracking
The single axis solar tracker based on flat panels is used in large solar plants and in distribution-level photovoltaic systems. In order to achieve this, the solar tracking systems generally need to work by tracking the sun’s position with dozens, maybe hundreds of movements along the day with a maximal known tracking error within the specifications. A novel model is proposed along this work based on the control of the angle deviation within a (polar) single axis configuration. This way an optimization of the harnessing of solar energy can be achieved with as few panel displacements as possible in order to decrease the wear in the mechanical parts of the equipment and the energy consumed by it. This tracking approach was implemented with as few as seven positions along the day and got an estimated theoretical value of 99.27% of the total collected energy in a continuous tracking system. Regarding an annual average basis, it would be about 96.5% of a dual axis system according to the p... [more]
Enhanced Contingency Analysis—A Power System Operator Tool

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: contingency analysis, distributed generation, electric load model, Energy Storage, modal analysis, voltage stability
Contingency analysis (CA) is a well-known function in power system planning and operation. In accordance with CA results, the system operator dispenses information regarding static security of the power system (overloads and/or voltage outside tolerable limits). However, classic CA with remedial action schemes cannot distinguish safe operating regimes from potentially dangerous ones in terms of voltage (in)stability. In fact, voltage instability is considered as one of the major threats leading to power system insecurity. Therefore, in this study an enhanced contingency analysis (ECA) is presented where the classical CA is extended with static voltage analysis based on the modal analysis. The article presents a dedicated methodology for the proposed ECA tool, with special emphasis on the analysis of corrective measures provided by the system operator, intended for enhancing power system security (regulation transformer action, distributed generation and energy storage). April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: model-free super-twisting nonlinear sliding mode control (MFSTNLSMC), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), smoothing extended state observer (SESO)
This paper proposes a novel model-free super-twisting nonlinear sliding mode control (MFSTNLSMC) strategy with an improved smoothing extended state observer (SESO) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. First of all, the improved SESO is introduced to estimate the unknown term of the PMSM ultra-local model. Secondly, a novel nonlinear sliding mode surface (NLSMS) is designed, which can effectively overcome the disadvantages of simple and rough signal processing of the conventional linear sliding mode surface. At the same time, a super-twisting (ST) structure is chosen to suppress the chattering phenomenon and improve system robustness. Then, the Lyapunov stability theorem is used to prove the stability of the proposed control algorithm. Finally, both comparative simulations and experimental demonstrations verify the excellent speed tracking performance and robustness of the proposed control strategy.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy sharing, energy supply contracting, mixed-integer linear programing optimization, neighborhood energy community, profitability
To ensure broad application of renewable and energy-efficient energy systems in buildings and neighborhoods, profitable business models are vital. Energy supply contracting helps building residents to overcome the barrier of high upfront investment costs while additionally reducing risks related to energy-saving mechanisms. This study examines profitability for energy contractors in a variety of business cases that simultaneously ensure energy cost savings for the residents. A mixed-integer linear optimization model is developed for a neighborhood energy community, consisting of three buildings with diverse usages. In the process, the optimum capacities of building-attached and building-integrated photovoltaics, a heat pump and a gas-fired mini combined heat and power unit are determined to cover the energy community’s electricity and heat load. Results show that cross-domain contracting within energy communities is highly profitable for both, the contractor and the residents, while th... [more]

Keywords: damping coefficient, optimal, permanent magnet linear generator, wave climate, wave energy converter
Wave energy converters (WECs), which are designed to harvest ocean wave energy, have recently been improved by the installation of numerous conversion mechanisms; however, it is still difficult to find an appropriate method that can compromise between strong environmental impact and robust performance by transforming irregular wave energy into stable electrical power. To solve this problem, an investigation into the impact of varied wave conditions on the dynamics of WECs and to determine an optimal factor for WECs to comply with long-term impacts was performed. In this work, we researched the performance of WECs influenced by wave climates. We used a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG)-based WEC that was invented at Uppsala University. The damping effect was first studied with a PMLG-type WEC. Then, a group of sea states was selected to investigate their impact on the power production of the WEC. Two research sites were chosen to investigate the WEC’s annual energy production as... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backward rotating magnetic field, electromagnetic losses, finite element method, magnetic balance, single-phase induction motor
This paper varies load conditions in a single-phase induction motor and deals with consequent effects on the electromagnetic characteristics in terms of a balanced and unbalanced operation. Based on a balanced-load condition, the magnetic field, electromagnetic losses, magnetic torque are quantified by the time-stepping finite element method at six different loads. The spatial distribution of the air-gap magnetic field are investigated to characterize the existence between the load variation and unbalanced operation. The components of electromagnetic losses are analyzed in terms of main parameters degrading the operating efficiency according to the load variation. The result can show the importance of building the magnetic balance for a high performance, and the design guideline for SPIMs running at multiple operating points is discussed.
Effects of Sugars and Degradation Products Derived from Lignocellulosic Biomass on Maleic Acid Production

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: furfural, hydrolysate, lignocellulosic biomass, maleic acid, xylose
In this study, maleic acid was produced from xylose contained in a hydrolysate generated by oxalic acid pretreatment of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), and the factors that influenced maleic acid production were evaluated. Furfural was obtained from the hydrolysate using H2SO4 as a catalyst, depending on combined severity factors (CSFs). Furfural production increased as the H2SO4 concentration increased. Furfural yield (46.70%), xylose conversion (70.95%), and xylo−oligomer conversion (75.47%) from the hydrolysate were high at CSF 1.92 with 1.64% H2SO4. However, the furfural concentration was slightly increased at 1.64% H2SO4 to 7.10 g/L at CSF 1.89, compared with that at CSF 1.92. Maleic acid was produced from the hydrolysate (CSF 1.92 and 1.64% H2SO4) at a yield of 91.44%. Maleic acid production was slightly better when formic acid and acetic acid were included in the hydrolysate than when furfural was included alone (79.94% vs. 78.82%). Based on the results, the xylose obta... [more]
Selected Aspects of Decreasing Weight of Motor Dedicated to Wheel Hub Assembly by Increasing Number of Magnetic Poles
Piotr Dukalski, Roman Krok
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electric drive, permanent magnet synchronous motor, wheel hub motor
Decreasing the mass of a wheel hub motor by improving the design of a motor’s electromagnetic circuit is discussed in this paper. The authors propose to increase the number of magnetic pole pairs. They present possibilities of mass reduction obtained by these means. They also analyze the impact of design changes on losses and temperature distribution in motor elements. Lab tests of a constructed prototype, as well as elaborated conjugate thermal-electromagnetic models of the prototype motor and modified motor (i.e., motor with increased number of magnetic poles) were used in the investigation. Simulation models were verified by tests on the prototype. Results of calculations for two motors, differing by the number of pair poles, were compared over a wide operational range specific to the motor application in the electric traction. A detailed analysis of the operational range for these motors was also made.
Hybrid-Excited PM Motor for Electric Vehicle

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: finite-element analysis, flux-weakening operation, hybrid excitation, interior permanent magnet motor, magnetic analysis, per-unit system, permanent magnet machine control, permanent magnet machines
This paper deals with the potentials of a Hybrid-Excitation Permanent-Magnet (HEPM) machine. The HEPM machine is characterized by a rotor including both permanent magnets (PMs) and excitation coils. The PMs produce a constant flux at the air gap of the machine, while an excitation current is supplied so as to regulate such a flux. A flux increase could be necessary during transient overload operations, while a flux decrease is useful during Flux-Weakening (FW) actions to operate at speeds higher than the nominal speed. Torque, power, efficiency, flux density and losses of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor and an HEPM motor are analyzed in detail. It is shown that this excitation winding produces a great advantage in terms of torque and power performance during the operations at speeds higher than the nominal speed. Despite the additional rotor losses, it is shown that there is a higher efficiency.

The integration of virtual power plants (VPP) has become more popular. Thus, research on VPP for different issues is highly desirable. This article addresses power quality issues. The presented investigation is based on multipoint, synchronic measurements obtained from five points that are related to the VPP. This article provides a proposition and discussion of using one global index in place of the classical power quality (PQ) parameters. Furthermore, in the article, one new global power quality index was proposed. Then the PQ measurements, as well as global indexes, were used to prepare input databases for cluster analysis. The mentioned cluster analysis aimed to detect the short-term working conditions of VPP that were specific from the point of view of power quality. To realize this the hierarchical clustering using the Ward algorithm was realized. The article also presents the application of the cubic clustering criterion to support cluster analysis. Then the assessment of the ob... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: performance analysis, power curve, technical systems aging, wind energy, wind turbines
It is a common sense expectation that the efficiency of wind turbines should decline with age, similarly to what happens with most technical systems. Due to the complexity of this kind of machine and the environmental conditions to which it is subjected, it is far from obvious how to reliably estimate the impact of aging. In this work, the aging of five Vestas V52 wind turbines is analyzed. The test cases belong to two different sites: one is at the Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland, and four are sited in an industrial wind farm in a mountainous area in Italy. Innovative data analysis techniques are employed: the general idea consists of considering appropriate operation curves depending on the working control region of the wind turbines. When the wind turbine operates at fixed pitch and variable rotational speed, the generator speed-power curve is studied; for higher wind speed, when the rotational speed has saturated and the blade pitch is variable, the blade pitch-power cur... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficient buildings, energy generation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Increasing the energy efficiency of residential and non-residential buildings is a crucial point towards the development of the sustainable cities of the future. To reach such a goal, the commonly employed intervention measures (for instance, on facades and glass) are not sufficient and efforts in reaching a fully renewable energy generation are mandatory. In this context, this paper discusses the applicability of a system with solar and biomass as the main energy sources in different climates for heating, cooling, domestic hot water and electricity generation in office buildings. The energy system includes solar thermal collectors with thermoelectric generators, a biomass boiler, a reversible heat pump/organic Rankine cycle and an adsorption chiller. The results showed that the system can operate with a share of renewables higher than 70% for all energy needs, with up to 80% of the overall energy demand supplied only by solar and biomass sources even in the northern locations.
