April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air temperature stratification, passive building, PMV, PPD, TABS, thermal comfort, thermally activated building system, vertical temperature profile
Modern buildings with new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems offer possibility to fit parameters of the indoor environment to the occupants’ requirements. The present paper describes the results of measurements performed in an office room in the first Polish passive commercial office building during four months of normal operation. They were used to calculate parameters describing thermal comfort: vertical air temperature profile, floor surface temperature, predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percent of dissatisfied (PPD). Obtained results confirmed good thermal conditions in the analysed room. The average temperature of the floor’s surface varied from 20.6 °C to 26.2 °C. The average vertical air temperature, calculated for working days, was from 22.5 °C to 23.1 °C. The temperature difference between the floor and 5 cm below the ceiling was from −0.9 °C to 6.3 °C. The PMV index varied from 0.52 to 1.50 indicating ‘slightly warm’ sensation, in spite of ‘neutral... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: crow search algorithm, multimodal optimization, niching crow search algorithm, non-convex, well placement optimization
Well placement optimization is considered a non-convex and highly multimodal optimization problem. In this article, a modified crow search algorithm is proposed to tackle the well placement optimization problem. This article proposes modifications based on local search and niching techniques in the crow search algorithm (CSA). At first, the suggested approach is verified by experimenting with the benchmark functions. For test functions, the results of the proposed approach demonstrated a higher convergence rate and a better solution. Again, the performance of the proposed technique is evaluated with well placement optimization problem and compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO), the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), and the Crow search algorithm (CSA). The outcomes of the study revealed that the niching crow search algorithm is the most efficient and effective compared to the other techniques.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Agenda 2030, composed indexes, energy security, energy sustainability, indirect measurement, measuring development, sustainable human development
The contribution of the energy sector to human development (HD) is one of the aspects that requires measuring growth of the overall sustainability of HD. The UN program, Agenda 2030, has defined the vision of advanced development by introducing a sustainable HD paradigm, the balanced integrated development paradigm, in three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. The overall performance of countries is not currently assessed; there are several proposals for measuring sustainable HD level, but none have become widely accepted due to their weaknesses. The selected indirect measurement method reflects the interlinkage of development dimensions in real cases of low data availability. By combining the strengths of existing proposals and eliminating their weaknesses, the measuring methodology has been created and an appropriate tool—the Advanced Human Development Index (AHDI)—has been designed, which ensures unity and concordance of all included comprehensive dimension indices. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: additive manufacturing, axial magnetic gear, flywheel energy storage systems, local and global force, structural analysis
This paper presents a comparison of two variants of an axial flux magnetic gear (AFMG), namely, with integer and fractional gear ratios. Based on calculations derived with the use of three-dimensional numerical models, the torque characteristics of the analyzed AFMGs are computed and verified on a physical model. The greatest emphasis is put on the detailed decomposition and analysis of local forces in modulator pole pieces (also used in the structural analysis) within the no-load and maximal load conditions. The authors also describe the unbalanced magnetic forces (UMF) in the axial and radial directions resulting from the construction of the considered AFMGs variants, and their possible effects in the context of the use of additive manufacturing (AM) in prototypes. The paper also proposes an effective method for limiting the axial strain by using the asymmetry of the air gaps, which slightly reduces the torque transmitted by AFMGs. Finally, a static strength analysis was presented th... [more]

Seyed Mahdi Miraftabzadeh, Michela Longo, Federica Foiadelli
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Big Data, electric vehicles (EVs), energy consumption, energy demands, estimation model, smart grid
The ubiquitous influence of E-mobility, especially electrical vehicles (EVs), in recent years has been considered in the electrical power system in which CO2 reduction is the primary concern. Having an accurate and timely estimation of the total energy demand of EVs defines the interaction between customers and the electrical power grid, considering the traffic flow, power demand, and available charging infrastructures around a city. The existing EV energy prediction methods mainly focus on a single electric vehicle energy demand; to the best of our knowledge, none of them address the total energy that all EVs consume in a city. This situation motivated us to develop a novel estimation model in the big data regime to calculate EVs’ total energy consumption for any desired time interval. The main contribution of this article is to learn the generic demand patterns in order to adjust the schedules of power generation and prevent any electrical disturbances. The proposed model successfull... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: component health monitoring, embedded fiber-optic sensor, fiber Bragg temperature sensor, high temperature sensor evaluation, turbomachinery
Current rotorcraft gas turbine engines typically use titanium alloys and steel for the compressor section and single-crystal nickel superalloys for the hot-section turbine stator vanes and rotor blades. However, these material selections are rapidly changing due to increased requirements of power-density and efficiency. Future U.S. Army gas turbine engines will be using ceramic matrix composites for many high temperature engine components due to their low density and improved durability in high temperature environments. The gas turbine industry is also actively developing adaptive concept technologies for production and assembly of modular gas turbine engine components with integrated sensing. In order to actively monitor engine components for extended seamless operation and improved reliability, it is essential to have intelligent embedded sensing to monitor the health of critical components in engines. Under this U.S. Army Foreign Technology Assessment Support (FTAS) program funded r... [more]

Keywords: building energy model, integration of RES, prediction methods, solar heat gains, solar radiation
Nowadays, the attention of designers and service providers is especially focused on energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy sources (RES). However, the knowledge on smart devices and automated, easily applicable algorithms for optimizing heating consumption by effectively taking advantage of solar heat gains, while avoiding overheating, is limited. This paper presents a simple method for taking into account the influence of solar heat gains in the form of solar radiation for the purposes of forecasting or controlling thermal power for heating of buildings. On the basis of field research carried out for seven buildings (five residential buildings and two public buildings) during one heating season, it was noticed that it was justified to properly narrow down the input data range included in the building energy model calculations in order to obtain a higher accuracy of calculations. In order to minimize the impact of other external factors (in particular wind speed) affecti... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic dead time, interleaving operation, phase-shift full-bridge converter
A compact and high-efficiency power converter is the main business of today’s power industry for server power applications. To achieve high efficiency with a low-output ripple, an interleaved phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter is designed, built, and tested for server power applications in this study. In this paper, dynamic dead time control is proposed to reduce the switching loss in the light load condition. The proposed technique reduces the turn-off switching loss and allows a wide range of zero-voltage switching. Moreover, the current ripple of the output inductor can be reduced with the interleaved operation. To verify the theoretical analysis, the proposed PSFB converter is simulated, and a 3 kW prototype is constructed. The experimental results confirm that the conversion efficiency is as high as 97.2% at the rated power of 3 kW and 92.95% at the light load of 300 W. The experimental transient waveforms demonstrated that the voltage spike or drop is less than 2 V in the f... [more]
Improved Modeling of a Multi-Level Inverter for TACS to Reduce Computational Time and Improve Accuracy
Sung-An Kim
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: induction motor, Modelling, multi-level inverter, pulse width modulation, variable speed drive
A modeling of a turbo air compressor system (TACS), with a multi-level inverter for driving variable speed, combining an electrical model of an electric motor drive system (EMDS) and a mechanical model of a turbo air compressor, is essential to accurately analyze dynamics characteristics. Compared to the mechanical model, the electrical model has a short sampling time due to the high frequency switching operation of the numerous power semiconductors inside the multi-level inverter. This causes the problem of increased computational time for dynamic characteristics analysis of TACS. To solve this problem, the conventional model of the multi-level inverter has been proposed to simplify the switching operation of the power semiconductors, however it has low accuracy because it does not consider pulse width modulation (PWM) operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved modeling of the multi-level inverter for TACS to reduce computational time and improve the accuracy of electrical... [more]

Veronica Piccialli, Antonio M. Sudoso
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: attention mechanism, deep neural network, energy disaggregation, non-intrusive load monitoring
Energy disaggregation, known in the literature as Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), is the task of inferring the power demand of the individual appliances given the aggregate power demand recorded by a single smart meter which monitors multiple appliances. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network that combines a regression subnetwork with a classification subnetwork for solving the NILM problem. Specifically, we improve the generalization capability of the overall architecture by including an encoder−decoder with a tailored attention mechanism in the regression subnetwork. The attention mechanism is inspired by the temporal attention that has been successfully applied in neural machine translation, text summarization, and speech recognition. The experiments conducted on two publicly available datasets—REDD and UK-DALE—show that our proposed deep neural network outperforms the state-of-the-art in all the considered experimental conditions. We also show that modeling attention... [more]
Substantiation of Loading Hub Location for Electric Cargo Bikes Servicing City Areas with Restricted Traffic
Vitalii Naumov
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cargo bicycles, computer simulations, facility location problem, loading hub, Python programing
Electric cargo bicycles have become a popular mode of transport for last-mile goods deliveries under conditions of restricted traffic in urban areas. The indispensable elements of the cargo bike delivery systems are loading hubs: they serve as intermediate points between vans and bikes ensuring loading, storage, and e-vehicle charging operations. The choice of the loading hub location is one of the basic problems to be solved when designing city logistics systems that presume the use of electric bicycles. The paper proposes an approach to justifying the location of a loading hub based on computer simulations of the delivery process in the closed urban area under the condition of stochastic demand for transport services. The developed mathematical model considers consignees and loading hubs as vertices in the graph representing the transport network. A single request for transport services is described based on the set of numeric parameters, among which the most significant are the size... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ancillary services, demand response, ENTSO-E, FERC, operation reserves, restoration reserves, standardization
Demand response is a key element of future power systems due to its capacity to defer grid investments, improve demand participation in the market, and absorb renewable energy source variations. In this regard, demand response can play an important role in delivering ancillary services to power systems. The lack of standardization and ancillary services programs prepared for traditional generators have blocked the participation of demand in these services. Nowadays, increasing needs to ensure the security of supply, renewable fluctuations, and information and communication technology advances are boosting the interest in demand response products to deliver ancillary services. While countries have had lengthy experience with these programs, others are starting from almost zero to develop these programs. To our knowledge, no analysis or standardized comparison exists of the different parameters and prices of demand response in ancillary services among different countries. Our study revie... [more]

Keywords: BIPV outdoor test, BIPV performance evaluation, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), impact of cracks in BIPV module, power degradation, simulation-based analysis, SolarPro, validation of simulated BIPV model
Crack issues afflicting a building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) system are major concerns in terms of the system’s maintenance and power degradation. Although there may be many circumstances that bring about cracks in BIPV modules during the installation process, identifying the degradation of PV module efficiency resulting from the effects of cracks tends to be a very difficult task unless actual indoor or outdoor tests or detailed electroluminescence imaging tests are conducted. Many current studies have demonstrated that cracks may or may not impact the output performance of PV modules depending on the damage levels or where the damage is located. For BIPV applications such as replacement for building materials, there is still a lack of information and case studies addressing crack issues in a quantitative manner for evaluating BIPV output performance. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to investigate the effects of cracks in BIPV modules on power outputs and to identify... [more]

Keywords: air temperature effect, dust effect, photovoltaic efficiency, real condition, solar incidence angle
Solar energy usage is thriving day by day. These solar panels are installed to absorb solar energy and produce electrical energy. As a result, the efficiency of solar panels depends on different environmental factors, namely, air temperature, dust (aerosols and accumulated dust), and solar incidence, and photovoltaic panel angles. The effects of real conditions factors on power and efficiency of photovoltaic panels are studied in this paper through testing the panel in real environmental tests. To study the mentioned parameters precisely, two panels with different angles are used. The case study is regarding a region of Tehran, Iran, in summer and winter seasons. The results show that panel efficiency during winter is higher than summer due to air temperature decrement. It is discovered that among air pollutants, Al and Fe have the most share in polluting the air that affect the photovoltaic efficiency. Moreover, measuring the accumulated dust on the panels shows more amount in winter... [more]
Optimal Shape of Non-Linear Partially Wet Annular Fins for Maximum Efficiency
Cheng-Hung Huang, Yun-Lung Chung
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conjugate gradient method, non-linear design problem, partially wet annular fins
Heat exchangers with annular finned-tube type and partially wetted condition are utilized widely in engineering systems, such as air-conditioning systems and refrigeration systems. In addition, the physical properties of fin materials should be considered as functions of temperature in reality and thus become a non-linear problem. Based on the above two conditions, an optimal partially wet annular fin design problem, with temperature-dependent thermal properties of the fin, to yield optimal fin efficiency was investigated in the present work, which has not been examined previously and it is the novelty of this study. An iterative regularization algorithm using the conjugate gradient method (CGM) is considered as the optimization tool based on the desired fin efficiency under a fixed fin volume constraint. The partially wet annular fin condition can result if the relative humidity of surrounding air is between 80 and 90%. Finally, the optimal fin shape, with the highest computed efficie... [more]

Keywords: high performance, interleaved topology, microgrid, multilevel–multicell converter, power density, specific power, wide bandgap devices
This paper focuses on the analysis and design of two multilevel−multicell converters (MMCs), named 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel−Multicell Rectifier (3Φ5L E-Type MMR) and 3-phase 5-Level E-Type Multilevel−Multicell Inverter (3Φ5L E-Type MMI) to be used in microgrid applications. The proposed 3-phase E-Type multilevel rectifier and inverter have each phase being accomplished by the combination of two I-Type topologies connected to the T-Type topology. The two cells of each phase of the rectifier and inverter are connected in interleaving using an intercell transformer (ICT) in order to reduce the volume of the output filter. Such an E-Type topology arrangement is expected to allow both the high efficiency and power density required for microgrid applications, as well as being capable of providing good performance in terms of quality of the voltage and current waveforms. The proposed hardware design and control interface are supported by the simulation results performed in Matlab/Sim... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic safety margin, fuzzy logic controller, partial shading operation, PV system
Because of the unpredictable activity of solar energy sources, photovoltaic (PV) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is essential to guarantee the continuous operation of electrical energy generation at optimal power levels. Several works have extensively examined the generation of the maximum power from the PV systems under normal and shading conditions. The fuzzy logic control (FLC) method is one of the effective MPPT techniques, but it needs to be adapted to work in partial shading conditions. The current paper presents the FLC-based on dynamic safety margin (DSM) as an MPPT technique for a PV system to overcome the limitations of FLC in shading conditions. The DSM is a performance index that measures the system state deviation from the normal situation. As a performance index, DSM is used to adapt the FLC controller output to rapidly reach the global maxima of the PV system. The ability of the proposed algorithm and its performance are evaluated using simulation and practical imple... [more]

Keywords: eclectic review, electric vehicle, equitability, green infrastructure, localisation, low carbon energy, sustainable development goals, value argumentation, viability
Dundee City has been successful in installing green infrastructure for charging electric vehicles (EVs). This intervention matches the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of affordable clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and climate action (SDG 13) of the United Nations General Assembly Agenda 2030 (Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development). Local authorities can align interventions with SDGs according to needs. The purpose of this paper is to consider whether Dundee’s EV strategy represents the most viable and equitable intervention that could be adopted given the city’s context. We adopt a positive review and value argumentation approach to determine the extent to which the strategy satisfies the criteria of “level of urgency”, “systemic impact” and “policy gaps”, which have been employed in the extant literature as the basis for a multi-criteria analysis (MCA). We eclectically review elements of the strategy against the city’... [more]

Keywords: EOR, hydraulic fracturing, imbibition, osmosis, shale, unconventional formations, water flooding
In petroleum engineering, imbibition is one of the most important elements for the hydraulic fracturing and water flooding processes, when extraneous fluids are introduced to the reservoir. However, in unconventional shale formations, osmosis has been often overlooked, but it can influence the imbibition process between the working fluid and the contacting formation rocks. The main objective of this study is to understand effects of fluid−rock interactions for osmosis-associated imbibition in unconventional formations. This paper summarizes previous studies on imbibition in unconventional formations, including shale, tight carbonate, and tight sandstone formations. Various key factors and their influence on the imbibition processes are discussed. Then, the causes and role of osmotic forces in fluid imbibition processes are summarized based on previous and recent field observations and laboratory measurements. Moreover, some numerical simulation approaches to model the osmosis-associate... [more]

Xin Meng, Zhili Zhu, Min Chen, Yihao Xu
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive cycle engine with convertible fan system, aft fan stage, front fan, matching mechanism
In the process of studying the steady-state performance and component matching of adaptive cycle engines with convertible fan system, it was found that the front fan and aft fan stage have a unique matching problem when the mode select valve is closed and engine is operating at higher Mach number conditions. The cause of this matching problem was studied with numeric simulation in this paper. Based on the features of adaptive cycle engines with convertible fan system, the possible methods and their feasibilities of solving this matching problem were also discussed. According to the results, the flow rate adjustment capacity of the aft fan stage directly determines the occurrence and severity of this matching problem. The matching problem can be ameliorated in some extent by either reducing the design second bypass ratio or adjusting the variable geometry mechanisms, but it cannot be completely solved at the aspect of component matching mechanism.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modelling &amp, Nuclear, nuclear reactors, Simulation, strategic development
High fidelity modelling for nuclear power plant analysis is becoming more common due to advances in modelling software and the availability of high-performance computers. However, to design, develop and regulate new light water nuclear reactors there are, up until now, limited requirements for high fidelity methods due to the already well-established computational methods already being widely accepted. This article explores the additional detail which can be obtained when using high fidelity methods through Monte Carlo/Sub-channel analysis compared to industrial methods of cross-section/nodal analysis using the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor as a case study. This case study was chosen due to the challenges in modelling two phase flow and the high levels of heterogeneity within the fuel assembly design. The article investigates how to implement such an approach, from a bottom-up procedure, by analysing each stage of the modelling process.
