Torque Ripple Suppression of PMSM Based on Robust Two Degrees-of-Freedom Resonant Controller
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: fractional order (FO) calculus, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), resonant control, robustness, two degrees-of-freedom (TDOF) control
This paper concentrates on a robust resonant control strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric drivers with model uncertainties and external disturbances to improve the control performance of the current loop. Firstly, to reduce the torque ripple of PMSM, the resonant controller with fractional order (FO) calculus is introduced. Then, a robust two degrees-of-freedom (Robust-TDOF) control strategy was designed based on the modified resonant controller. Finally, by combining the two control methods, this study proposes an enhanced Robust-TDOF regulation method, named as the robust two degrees-of-freedom resonant controller (Robust-TDOFR), to guarantee the robustness of model uncertainty and to further improve the performance with minimized periodic torque ripples. Meanwhile, a tuning method was constructed followed by stability and robust stability analysis. Furthermore, the proposed Robust-TDOFR control method was applied in the current loop of a PMSM to suppr... [more]

Determination of Price Zones during Transition from Uniform to Zonal Electricity Market: A Case Study for Turkey
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: clustering quality, electricity market, k-means clustering, spatially constrained clustering, zonal pricing
In the electricity market, different pricing models can be applied to increase market competitiveness. Different electricity systems use different market structures. Uniform marginal pricing, zonal marginal pricing, and nodal marginal pricing methods are commonly used market structures. For markets wishing to move from a uniform pricing structure to a more competitive zonal pricing structure, the determination of price zones is critical for achieving a competitive market that generates accurate price signals. Three different pricing zone detection algorithms are analyzed in this paper including the k-means clustering and queen/rook spatially constraint clustering. Finally, the results of a case study for the Turkish electricity system are shared to compare each method.

On the Use of Modern Engineering Codes for Designing a Small Wind Turbine: An Annotated Case Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, engineering codes, pitch, stall, wind turbine
While most wind energy comes from large utility-scale machines, small wind turbines (SWTs) can still play a role in off-grid installations or in the context of distributed production and smart energy systems. Over the years, these small machines have not received the same level of aerodynamic refinement of their larger counterparts, resulting in a notably lower efficiency and, therefore, a higher cost per installed kilowatt. In an effort to reduce this gap during the design of a new SWT, the scope of the study was twofold. First, it aimed to show how to combine and best exploit the modern engineering methods and codes available in order to provide the scientific and industrial community with an annotated procedure for a full preliminary design process. Secondly, special focus was put on the regulation methods, which are often some of the critical points of a real design. A dedicated sensitivity analysis for a proper setting is provided, both for the pitch-to-feather and the stall regul... [more]

Edible Energy Production and Energy Return on Investment—Long-Term Analysis of Global Changes
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: direct energy use, edible energy, Energy Efficiency, EROI, food production
The projected increase in the world’s population requires an increase in the production of edible energy that would meet the associated increased demand for food. However, food production is strongly dependent on the use of energy, mainly from fossil fuels, the extraction of which requires increasing input due to the depletion of the most easily accessible deposits. According to numerous estimations, the world’s energy production will be dependent on fossil fuels at least to 2050. Therefore, it is vital to increase the energy efficiency of production, including food production. One method to measure energy efficiency is the energy return on investment (EROI), which is the ratio of the amount of energy produced to the amount of energy consumed in the production process. The literature lacks comparable EROI calculations concerning global food production and the existing studies only include crop production. The aim of this study was to calculate the EROI of edible crop and animal product... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercial energy consumption, empirical research, exploratory factor analysis, rural residents, SEM, theory of planned behavior
With rapid rural urbanization and new rural construction, the commercial energy consumption of rural residents shows a trend of rapid growth, and China’s rural areas are also faced with environmental challenges brought by the increase of commercial energy consumption. China’s commercial energy consumption behavior of rural residents has also undergone tremendous changes. However, scholars have neglected the research on rural residents’ commercial energy consumption intention from a micro perspective. Therefore, this study takes the 5 villages in Chengdu out of the 100 representative villages in the Sichuan province as examples. From the perspective of the head of a family of permanent rural residents, extended planned behavior theory, exploratory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling are used to explore the influencing factors of rural resident commercial energy consumption intention and their relationship. Findings show that subjective norm, perceived behavioral control (P... [more]

Hydrochemical Characteristics of Thermal Water Reservoir in Lądek-Zdrój in Light of Research into the Borehole LZT-1—The Deepest Borehole in the Sudetes (SW Poland)
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crystalline massif, geothermal water, geothermometers, hydrochemistry, Lądek-Zdrój, medicinal water, Poland
Lądek-Zdrój is situated within the tectonic unit of the Lądek-Śnieżnik metamorphic complex. Thermal water is captured by five springs and borehole L-2. These waters are characterized by TDS content in the range of 160−230 mg/L and predominance of HCO3− (15−100% meq), SO42+ (10−36% meq), and Na+ (57−91% meq) ions. Increased concentrations of radon, hydrogen sulfide, and fluoride ions (7−13 mg/L) determine the medicinal properties of these waters, classified as thermal waters of Na-HCO3-(SO4), F−, H2S, Rn type, with temperatures of 18 to 30 °C and 41 to 45 °C in springs and in the L-2 borehole, respectively. At the turn of 2018 and 2019, a new borehole LZT-1 was drilled in the area of Lądek-Zdrój. It captured thermal waters with a temperature of 37.4 °C at the outflow. The water temperature at the bottom of the heated borehole reached about 59 °C. The lithology of rocks found in the recharged areas implied that the Ca2+ ions present in the studied waters originated from pyroxenes, amphib... [more]

Optimal Scheduling of Non-Convex Cogeneration Units Using Exponentially Varying Whale Optimization Algorithm
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Cogeneration plants, Combined Heat and Power Unit (CHP), Exponentially Varying Acceleration Functions, Meta-heuristic Optimization, Non-convex Optimal Economic Scheduling, Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA)
This paper proposes an Exponentially Varying Whale Optimization Algorithm (EVWOA) to solve the single-objective non-convex Cogeneration Units problem. This problem seeks to evaluate the optimal output of the generator unit to minimize a CHP system’s fuel costs. The nonlinear and non-convex characteristics of the objective function demands a powerful optimization technique. The traditional Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is improved by incorporating four different acceleration functions to fine-tune its performance during exploration and exploitation phases. Among the four variants of the proposed WOA, the emphasis is laid on the EVWOA which uses the exponentially varying acceleration function (EVAF). The proposed EVWOA is tested on six different small-scale to large-scale systems. The results obtained for these six test systems, followed by a statistical study highlight the supremacy of EVWOA for finding the best optimal solution and the convergence traits.

Calorimetric Behaviour of Electric Cables
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cone calorimeter tests of cables, fire properties of electric cables, large scale cable tests, Quintiere’s theory
A routine cone calorimeter procedure, the theoretical analysis method, based on a set of ignitability data from the cone calorimeter, has been performed. The five sets of ignition times at different irradiance levels were used for obtaining experimental data needed for analysis. The cone calorimeter tests were performed with horizontal specimens of the size 100 mm × 100 mm consisting of eight pieces of commercial poly(vinyl chloride) coaxial power cable. Specimen combustion was carried out under external heat flux of constant values equal to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kW·m−2, respectively. Standard fire parameters and time to ignition were used for analysis. The results indicate that for each fire parameter, a rising trend with an increase in radiant heat flux has been observed. It was shown that the use of poly(vinyl chloride)-based cables is a potential fire safety hazard due to the emission of heat and a large amount of acid smoke. Quintiere’s theory has been shown as a useful tool for f... [more]

Virtual State Feedback Reference Tuning and Value Iteration Reinforcement Learning for Unknown Observable Systems Control
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dimensionality reduction, learning control, neural networks, observability, reference model output tracking, reinforcement learning, robotic systems, state-feedback, transfer learning, virtual state-feedback reference tuning
In this paper, a novel Virtual State-feedback Reference Feedback Tuning (VSFRT) and Approximate Iterative Value Iteration Reinforcement Learning (AI-VIRL) are applied for learning linear reference model output (LRMO) tracking control of observable systems with unknown dynamics. For the observable system, a new state representation in terms of input/output (IO) data is derived. Consequently, the Virtual State Feedback Tuning (VRFT)-based solution is redefined to accommodate virtual state feedback control, leading to an original stability-certified Virtual State-Feedback Reference Tuning (VSFRT) concept. Both VSFRT and AI-VIRL use neural networks controllers. We find that AI-VIRL is significantly more computationally demanding and more sensitive to the exploration settings, while leading to inferior LRMO tracking performance when compared to VSFRT. It is not helped either by transfer learning the VSFRT control as initialization for AI-VIRL. State dimensionality reduction using machine le... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: backward-facing step, boundary layer, cavity, cylinder, heat transfer enhancement, high turbulence, rib, separated flows
The study of flows with a high degree of turbulence in boundary layers, near-wall jets, gas curtains, separated flows behind various obstacles, as well as during combustion is of great importance for increasing energy efficiency of the flow around various elements in the ducts of gas-dynamic installations. This paper gives some general characteristics of experimental work on the study of friction and heat transfer on a smooth surface, in near-wall jets, and gas curtains under conditions of increased free-stream turbulence. Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural operations, energy efficiency ratio, energy gain, energy input, energy output, Triticosecale
This article presents the results of a field experiment investigating the energy efficiency of grain produced by a semi-dwarf genotype of winter triticale at different levels of agricultural inputs. The energy efficiency of winter triticale grain production was evaluated in two low-input and two high-input cultivation practices that differed in the rate of nitrogen fertilizer (split application) and disease control. The energy inputs associated with the production of winter triticale grain at low levels of agricultural inputs were determined to be 14.5 to 14.7 GJ ha−1. Higher levels of agricultural inputs increased the demand for energy in grain production by 25% on average. The energy output of grain peaked (163.3 GJ ha−1) in response to a fertilizer rate of 120 kg ha−1 applied in a split ratio of 50:50 (BBCH 27/32) and two fungicide treatments (BBCH 31 and 39). The energy output of grain from the remaining cultivation regimes was 3−13% lower. The energy efficiency ratio was highest i... [more]

Energy Consumption in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Households in the Platform Economics
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, households, platform
The ongoing digitization of the economy has led to the creation and functioning of platform model socio-economic systems. It is also reflected in the changes in patterns of energy consumption in households. In the first cross-section, it is an industrial revolution, with environmental benefits. However, platforms are primarily a revolution in the consumption sphere, and here, the effects of digitization are not fully recognized. Our social needs are increasingly met “through accessibility” without us leaving our home. Due to the home’s multifunctionality, based on the availability of platform services, household energy consumption should be viewed differently today than before. The article aims to show the changes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) household energy consumption between 2008−2018 and their assessment through the prism of the economy’s platformization methods. Robust Digital Control Strategy Based on Fuzzy Logic for a Solar Charger of VRLA Batteries
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buck converter, digital MPPT, fuzzy logic controller, PV standalone system, solar battery charger
This paper presents the design and implementation of a digital control strategy for a Buck converter, used as a solar charger of valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. The control system consists of two fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs), which adjust the appropriate increment of the converter duty cycle based on battery state of charge according to a three-stage charging scheme. One FLC works as a maximum power point tracker (FLC-MPPT), while the other regulates the battery voltage (FLC-VR). This approach of using two different set of membership functions overcomes the limitations of the battery chargers with a single control function, where the voltage supplied to the battery is either not constant due to the operation of the MPPT algorithm (possibly damaging the battery) or is constant due to the operation of the voltage control (hence, MPP cannot be achieved). In this way, the proposed control approach has the advantage of extracting the maximum energy of the PV panel, preventing... [more]

Design and Position Control of Overhang-Type Rail Mover Using Dual BLAC Motor
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: BLACM, position control, rail traction system
This paper presents the design and position control scheme of an overhang-type rail mover system driven by a dual Brushless AC (BLAC) motor with a simple Hall position sensor inside each motor. The overhang-type roller is chosen to reduce the slip between the roller and rail surface due to gravity. The BLAC motors are used to provide smooth translation along the rail and effective turning. Imbalances on any part of the motor and the simplicity of the Hall position sensor can create additional disturbance load, unsteady movement, and position errors. To reduce the sudden moving position error between the two motors, a balancing compensator with a Proportional-Differential (PD) position controller, which is based on the instantaneous speed and position trajectories, is presented. Furthermore, speed and position reference models are designed to compensate for the low Hall sensor resolution in the low-speed range. Therefore, steady-state position errors can then be regulated simply by usin... [more]

Keywords: battery thermal management, boron nitride particles, silicone rubber, thermal interface material
Hexagonal boron nitride and silicone rubber (h-BN/SR) composites were prepared by the mechanical stirring method, and their crystal morphology, chemical structure, thermal properties, and compression stress−strain performance were investigated. The experimental results suggest that silicone rubber combined with h-BN exhibits better thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. When the proportion of h-BN is 30 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the h-BN/SR composite material is 0.58 W/m∙K, which is 3.4 times that of pure silicone rubber. At the same time, the compressive strength of h-BN/SR is 4.27 MPa, which is 6.7 times that of pure silicone rubber. Furthermore, the finite element model was employed to numerically analyze the thermal behavior of a battery with a h-BN/SR composite as the thermal interface material. The analytical results show that the highest temperature of the battery decreased when using h-BN/SR as the thermal interface material in the battery thermal management sys... [more]

A Heating Controller Designing Based on Living Space Heating Dynamic’s Model Approach in a Smart Building
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ambient intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Energy Efficiency, fuzzy inference system, heating controller, smart building
Most already advanced developed heating control systems remain either in a prototype state (because of their relatively complex implementation requirements) or require very specific technologies not implementable in most existing buildings. On the other hand, the above-mentioned analysis has also pointed out that most smart building energy management systems deploy quite very basic heating control strategies limited to quite simplistic predesigned use-case scenarios. In the present paper, we propose a heating control strategy taking advantage of the overall identification of the living space by taking advantage of the consideration of the living space users’ presence as additional thermal sources. To handle this, an adaptive controller for the operation of heating transmitters on the basis of soft computing techniques by taking into account the diverse range of occupants in the heating chain is introduced. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic pitch, Optimization, performance, vertical-axis wind turbine
In this work, the aerodynamic performance and optimization of a vertical-axis wind turbine with a high tip-speed ratio are theoretically studied on the basis of the two-dimensional airfoil theory. By dividing the rotating plane of the airfoil into the upwind and downwind areas, the relationship among the angle of attack, azimuth, pitch angle, and tip-speed ratio is derived using the quasi-steady aerodynamic model, and aerodynamic loads on the airfoil are then obtained. By applying the polynomial approximation to functions of lift and drag coefficients with the angle of attack for symmetric and asymmetric airfoils, respectively, explicit expressions of aerodynamic loads as functions of the angle of attack are obtained. The performance of a fixed-pitch blade is studied by employing a NACA0012 model, and influences of the tip speed ratio, pitch angle, chord length, rotor radius, incoming wind speed and rotational speed on the performance of the blade are discussed. Voltage Optimization in MV Network with Distributed Generation Using Power Consumption Control in Electrolysis Installations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolysis, Hydrogen, power to gas, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, voltage control, voltage quality
Connecting a large number of distributed sources to the medium and low voltage grid poses many problems. The most important of these are the voltage changes inside the network, what can be observed when the power flow from these sources towards the HV/MV (High Voltage/Medium Voltage) transformer station. In particular, if the power consumption in nodes of the MV network is small and the distance between the place of installation of the source and the substation is large, increases and changes in voltage may be dangerous for the insulation of the network and burdensome for the consumers connected to it. The solution most frequently used to control voltage increases is the appropriate setting of the controller that affects the on-load tap changer of the MV/HV or even MV/LV (Medium Voltage/Low Voltage) transformer. It is also possible to regulate the reactive power of the sources and, of course, to limit their generated active power (curtailment of generation). The development of energy s... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: government, hidden information, incentive contracts, microgrid users, subsidy
Tariff subsidies are beneficial to the further development of the microgrid market. In response to the reduction of the power generation costs of microgrids, the energy storage subsidy for microgrids has become a key factor affecting their further development. Therefore, it is essential to explore and establish a government subsidy mechanism for the energy storage price of microgrids. In this paper, we consider the incentive compatibility constraints and participation constraints of both the government and the microgrid energy storage subsidy. The cases of hidden information and no hidden information are investigated. A microgrid energy storage subsidy model of the incentive compatibility constraint was established to analyze the efficiency of the government subsidy and the microgrid energy storage in the “self-generation + energy storage” mode. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: DC microgrid, microgrid operation, mixed-integer linear programming, optimal operation, vehicle-to-grid operation, voltage regulation, voltage sensitivity factor
Distributed energy resources (DERs), including renewable energy resources (RESs) and electric vehicles (EVs), have a significant impact on distribution systems because they can cause bi-directional power flow in the distribution lines. Thus, the voltage regulation and thermal limits of the distribution system to mitigate from the excessive power generation or consumption should be considered. The focus of this study is on a control strategy for DERs in low-voltage DC microgrids to minimize the operating costs and maintain the distribution voltage within the normal range based on intelligent scheduling of the charging and discharging of EVs, and to take advantage of RESs such as photovoltaic (PV) plants. By considering the time-of-use electricity rates, we also propose a 24-h sliding window to mitigate uncertainties in loads and PV plants in which the output is time-varied and the EV arrival cannot be predicted. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: arc welding, digital control, FPGA, non-linear control, power factor correction, robust current controller, self-oscillation, three phase Vienna converter
A welding power source is commonly assimilated to a non-linear load. Arc welding market being in full growth, the resulting harmonic pollution is becoming an increasingly difficult problem to ignore. Therefore, the main purpose of this work is to define and implement the most suitable solution for power factor correction in a welding power source.
