The Impact of an Ultrasonic Field on the Efficiency of Coke Wastewater Treatment in a Sequencing Batch Reactor
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aerobic process, coke wastewater, disintegration, SBR, sonication
The growing production of coke and, consequently, coke wastewater is a significant problem for the environment. Coke wastewater, because it contains high amounts of toxic substances, is classified as an extremely hazardous industrial wastewater. The treatment of such wastewater requires a combination of advanced physicochemical and biological methods. The aim of the research was to investigate the effectiveness of the application of the ultrasonic disintegration of coke wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The tests were conducted in two stages, wherein the first stage involved determining the most favorable sonication conditions, that is, time and amplitude. The authors used the following amplitudes: 31 µm; 61.5 µm; 92 µm; 123 µm and times: 120 s; 240 s; 480 s; 960 s. The second stage focused on treating coke wastewater in SBRs (Reactor A—a proportion of coke wastewater in the mixture: 5%, 10%, and 20%; reactor B—sonicated coke wastewater, proportion in mixture: 5%, 10%, 20... The Role of National Energy Policies and Life Cycle Emissions of PV Systems in Reducing Global Net Emissions of Greenhouse Gases
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: embodied carbon, greenhouse gas emission rate (GHGe-rate), life cycle assessment (LCA), net-zero emissions, photovoltaics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy sector and electricity generation in particular, is responsible for a great share of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. World electricity generation is still largely based on the burning of fossil fuels. However, Brazil has already a very low electricity carbon intensity due to the country’s large hydropower capacity. In countries with low grid carbon intensities such as Brazil, the investment in photovoltaic solar systems (PVSS) even if it is cost-effective, might become challenging as any new generation competes essentially against other renewable generation and the carbon offset is not a key driver for investment anymore. This study builds further upon that case to examine if national renewable energy incentives could actually lead to an increase of global net carbon emissions from the installation of PVSS in countries with a low grid carbon intensity. The study presents a life cycle analysis (LCA) of ten photovoltaic systems representative of the different operat... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery degradation, charging and discharging scheduling, conversion efficiency, demand response, electric vehicle, Optimization, vehicle-to-grid and grid-to-vehicle (V2G/G2V)
With a rapid increase in the awareness of carbon reduction worldwide, the industry of electric vehicles (EVs) has started to flourish. However, the large number of EVs connected to a power grid with a large power demand and uncertainty may result in significant challenges for a power system. In this study, the optimal charging and discharging scheduling strategies of G2V/V2G and battery energy storage system (BESS) were proposed for EV charging stations. A distributed computation architecture was employed to streamline the complexity of an optimization problem. By considering EV charging/discharging conversion efficiencies for different load conditions, the proposed method was used to maximize the operational profits of each EV and BESS based on the related electricity tariff and demand response programs. Moreover, the behavior model of drivers and cost of BESS degradation caused by charging and discharging cycles were considered to improve the overall practical applicability. An EV ch... [more]

A PWM/PFM Dual-Mode DC-DC Buck Converter with Load-Dependent Efficiency-Controllable Scheme for Multi-Purpose IoT Applications
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: DC-DC buck converter, load-dependent efficiency control, pulse frequency module, pulse width modulation, selectable adaptive on-time
This paper presents a dual-mode DC-DC buck converter including a load-dependent, efficiency-controllable scheme to support multi-purpose IoT applications. For light-load applications, a selectable adaptive on-time pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control is proposed to achieve optimum power efficiency by selecting the optimum switching frequency according to the load current, thereby reducing unnecessary switching losses. When the inductor peak current value or converter output voltage ripple are considered in some applications, its on-time can be adjusted further. In heavy-load applications, a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme is adopted, and its gate driver is structured to reduce dynamic current, preventing the current from shooting through the power switch. A proposed dual-mode buck converter prototype is fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process, achieving its measured maximum efficiency of 95.7% and power density of 0.83 W/mm2.

Innovative Methodology to Identify Errors in Electric Energy Measurement Systems in Power Utilities
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, consumption patterns, data analytics, electrical energy losses, Machine Learning, outlier detection
Many electric utilities currently have a low level of smart meter implementation on traditional distribution grids. These utilities commonly have a problem associated with non-technical energy losses (NTLs) to unidentified energy flows consumed, but not billed in power distribution grids. They are usually due to either the electricity theft carried out by their own customers or failures in the utilities’ energy measurement systems. Non-technical energy losses lead to significant economic losses for electric utilities around the world. For instance, in Latin America and the Caribbean countries, NTLs represent around 15% of total energy generated in 2018, varying between 5 and 30% depending on the country because of the strong correlation with social, economic, political, and technical variables. According to this, electric utilities have a strong interest in finding new techniques and methods to mitigate this problem as much as possible. This research presents the results of determining... Influence of the Preformed Coil Design on the Thermal Behavior of Electric Traction Machines
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electrical machines, insulation systems, pre-shaped conductor, preformed coils, thermal modeling
Preformed coils are used in electrical machines to improve the copper slot fill factor. A higher utilization of the machine can be realized. The improvement is a result of both, low copper losses due to the increased slot fill factor and an improved heat transition out of the slot. In this study, the influence of these two aspects on the operational improvement of the machine is studied. Detailed simulation models allow a separation of the two effects. A preform wound winding in comparison to a round wire winding is studied. Full machine prototypes as well as motorettes of the two designs are built up. Thermal finite element models of the stator slot are developed and parameterized with the help of motorette microsections. The resulting thermal lumped parameter model is enlarged to represent the entire electric machine. Electromagnetic finite element models for loss calculation and the thermal lumped parameter models are parameterized using test bench measurements. The developed models... [more]

Effect of Foaming Temperature on Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Flame Spread Rate in PET−PEN Copolymer
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: copolymer, flame spread rate, glass transition temperature, gradient foam, nano-indentation
Polymer foams are expanding their applications into functional materials. Partial foam structure has been fabricated in polyethylene terephthalate−polyethylene naphthalate (PET−PEN) copolymer by solid state foaming. Through SEM image analyses, a potential to fabricate gradient foam structures with micropores and unfoamed skin layers has been identified. The post-foaming temperature Tf tune the pore size distribution. Radial distribution of micromechanical properties, indentation hardness and elastic modulus were measured for the partial foam and their values were around 0.12 GPa and 2.0 GPa, respectively, for the outer foamed region. Foaming temperature affects the glass transition temperature Tg, the coefficient of thermal expansion and the flame spreading rate. For the range of Tf ≤ 60°C, thermal expansion coefficients for T > Tg are about 0.5 m/m°C (steep expansion group, SEG). When Tf is above 80 °C, they are around 0.02 m/m°C (mild expansion group, MEG). The burning rate of SEG is... [more]

Experimental Study on Behavior of Coolants, Particularly the Oil-Cooling Method, in Electric Vehicle Motors Using Hairpin Winding
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, hairpin winding, mixture of oil and air, oil cooling, thermal management, traction motors
This paper analyzes the characteristics of oil behavior in the oil-cooling of motors with hairpin winding to understand how to maximize cooling performance. The oil cooling is performed by directly spraying oil onto the motor components. The results show that as the temperature of the oil increases, the viscosity decreases, and the oil film is formed more evenly; however, oil splashing also increases. Similarly, as the flow rate increases, oil splashing also increases, but the amount of oil forming the oil film increases. However, the oil film is not affected by the rotor’s rotation. In contrast, the immersed oil is found to be closely related to the rotor’s rotation. As the rotational speed increases, the immersion oil is mixed with the air, and oil churning occurs. The mixing phenomenon increases as the temperature and flow rate of the oil increases. The higher the oil level, the greater the oil churning. As the oil is mixed with air, the heat transfer coefficient decreases, which ad... [more]

A New Model for the Stochastic Point Reactor: Development and Comparison with Available Models
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Langevin point kinetic model, point kinetic reactor, stochastic modeling, stochastic processes
The point kinetic model is a system of differential equations that enables analysis of reactor dynamics without the need to solve coupled space-time system of partial differential equations (PDEs). The random variations, especially during the startup and shutdown, may become severe and hence should be accounted for in the reactor model. There are two well-known stochastic models for the point reactor that can be used to estimate the mean and variance of the neutron and precursor populations. In this paper, we reintroduce a new stochastic model for the point reactor, which we named the Langevin point kinetic model (LPK). The new LPK model combines the advantages, accuracy, and efficiency of the available models. The derivation of the LPK model is outlined in detail, and many test cases are analyzed to investigate the new model compared with the results in the literature.

A Robust Nonlinear Controller for PMSG Wind Turbines
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lyapunov, nonlinear control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind turbine controls
In this paper, a nonlinear backstepping controller is proposed to manage the performance of a full-variable permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbine. This nonlinear controller achieves a rotational speed objective for the generator and is validated through Lyapunov-based stability analysis. Additionally, this objective is accomplished without a measurement for wind speed that influences the wind torque. The proposed scheme is compared to a typical linear controller through simulation results. Simulation tests are performed to compare the response time and average error of each controller in both a drastic and realistic dynamic wind environment. These results demonstrate that the proposed controller is far more robust to wind turbulence than traditional control schemes. The simulation results of this study indicate a 1000% increase in response time and 3000% decrease in average controller error.

An Improved Cuckoo Search Algorithm for Maximum Power Point Tracking of Photovoltaic Systems under Partial Shading Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cuckoo search, MPPT, optimization techniques, partial shading, photovoltaic
The problem of partial shading has serious effects on the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Adding a bypass diode in shunt to each PV module avoids hot-spot phenomena, but causes multi-peaks in the power−voltage (P−V) characteristics of the PV array, which cause traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques to become trapped in local peaks. This problem has forced researchers to search for smart techniques to track global peaks and prevent the possibility of convergence at local peaks. Swarm optimization techniques have been used to fill this shortcoming; unfortunately, however, these techniques suffer from unacceptably long convergence time. Cuckoo search (CS) is one of the fastest and most reliable optimization techniques, making it an ideal option to be used as an MPPT of PV systems under dynamic partial shading conditions. The standard CS algorithm has a long conversion time, high failure rate, and high oscillations at steady state; this paper aims to overcome... [more]

Evaluating the Use of Displacement Ventilation for Providing Space Heating in Unoccupied Periods Using Laboratory Experiments, Field Tests and Numerical Simulations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: classroom, CO2 concentrations, indoor air quality, preheating, stratification, thermal comfort
Displacement ventilation is a proven method of providing conditioned air to enclosed spaces with the aim to deliver good air quality and thermal comfort while reducing the amount of energy required to operate the system. Until now, the practical applications of displacement ventilation have been exclusive to providing ventilation and cooling to large open spaces with high ceilings. The provision of heating through displacement ventilation has traditionally been discouraged, out of concern that warm air supplied at the floor level would rise straight to the ceiling level without providing heat to the occupied space. Hence, a separate heating system is regularly integrated with the displacement ventilation in cold climates, increasing the cost and energy use of the system. This paper goes beyond the common industry practice and explores the possibility of using displacement ventilation to provide heating without any additional heating system. It reports on experimental investigations con... [more]

A Novel Procedure for Coupled Simulation of Thermal and Fluid Flow Models for Rough-Walled Rock Fractures
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aperture, coupled hydrothermal model, joint roughness coefficient, mesh size, rough fracture
An enhanced geothermal system (EGS) proposed on the basis of hot dry rock mining technology has become a focus of geothermal research. A novel procedure for coupled simulation of thermal and fluid flow models (NPCTF) is derived to model heat flow and thermal energy absorption characteristics in rough-walled rock fractures. The perturbation method is used to calculate the pressure and flow rate in connected wedge-shaped cells at pore-scale, and an approximate analytical solution of temperature distribution in wedge-shaped cells is obtained, which assumes an identical temperature between the fluid and fracture wall. The proposed method is verified in Barton and Choubey (1985) fracture profiles. The maximum deviation of temperature distribution between the proposed method and heat flow simulation is 13.2% and flow transmissivity is 1.2%, which indicates the results from the proposed method are in close agreement with those obtained from simulations. Visualization of Chemical Heavy Oil EOR Displacement Mechanisms in a 2D System
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2D model tests, chemical flooding, chemical flooding, heavy oil, heavy oil recovery mechanisms, Hele-Shaw cell
This study aims to develop a visual understanding of the macro-displacement mechanisms associated with heavy oil recovery by water and chemical flooding in a 2D system. The sweep efficiency improvements by water, surfactant, polymer, and surfactant-polymer (SP) were evaluated in a Hele-Shaw cell with no local pore-level trapping of fluids. The results demonstrated that displacement performance is highly correlated to the mobility ratio between the fluids. Surfactant and water reached similar oil recovery values at similar mobility ratios; however, they exhibited different flow patterns in the 2D system—reductions in IFT can lead to the formation of emulsions and alter flow pathways, but in the absence of porous media these do not lead to significant improvements in oil recovery. Polymer flooding displayed a more stable front and a higher reduction in viscous fingering. Oil recovery by SP was achieved mostly by polymer rather than due to the effect of the surfactant. The surfactant in t... [more]

CFD Analysis of the Performance of a Double Decker Turbine for Wave Energy Conversion
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial turbine, double decker turbine, oscillating water column, twin turbines configuration, Wave Energy
The Double Decker Turbine (DDT) is a recent design introduced for oscillating water column (OWC) devices. Its major contribution is the combination of two typical solutions in just one prototype: a self-rectifying performance, to deal with the bidirectional flow, and the twin-turbine concept, allowing the use of unidirectional turbines. This is achieved by a set of two concentric turbines, called external and internal turbines (ExT—InT). In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical model is developed to study in detail the performance of a DDT, where geometrical components for both turbines have been taken from previous works of the authors. The ANSYS-Fluent code was first executed by means of a URANS simulation with a realizable k-ε turbulence model to obtain the performance curve of the turbine under steady conditions. Results obtained reveal its potential with respect to other solutions in the current state-of-the-art of OWC solutions for Wave Energy Conversion. Follow... [more]

Comparison of Cycle Reduction and Model Reduction Strategies for the Design Optimization of Hybrid Powertrains on Driving Cycles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cycle reduction, electric machines, hybrid electric vehicle, Model Reduction, optimal control, optimal design, Plant/Controller optimization
Decision-making is a crucial and difficult step in the design process of complex systems such as the hybrid powertrain. Finding an optimal solution requires the system feedback. This can be, depending on the granularity of the models at the component level, highly time-consuming. This is even more true when the system’s performance is determined by its control. In fact, various possibilities can be selected to deliver the required torque to the wheels during a driving cycle. In this work, two different design strategies are proposed to minimize the fuel consumption and the cost of the hybrid powertrain. Both strategies adopt the iterative framework which allows for the separation of the powertrain design problem and its control while leading to system optimality. The first approach is based on model reduction, while the second approach relies on improved cycle reduction techniques. They are then applied to a parallel hybrid vehicle case study, leading to important cost reduction in rea... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adiabatic liquid air energy storage system, cold storage, cryogenic technologies, exergy analysis, Linde–Hampson cycle
Efficiently storing energy on a large scale poses a major challenge and one that is growing in importance with the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix. The only options at present are either pumped hydro or compressed air storage. One novel alternative is to store energy using liquid air, but this technology is not yet fully mature and requires substantial research and development, including in-depth energy and exergy analysis. This paper presents an exergy analysis of the Adiabatic Liquid Air Energy Storage (A-LAES) system based on the Linde−Hampson cycle. The exergy analysis was carried out for four cases with different parameters, in particular the discharge pressure of the air at the inlet of the turbine (20, 40, 100, 150 bar). The results of the analysis show that the greatest exergy destruction can be observed in the air evaporator and in the Joule−Thompson valve. In the case of air evaporator, the destruction of exergy is greatest for the lowest discharge pressure,... [more]

New HFC/HFO Blends as Refrigerants for the Vapor-Compression Refrigeration System (VCRS)
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hydrofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroolefins, low GWP, refrigerants
In this work, which is related to the current European Parliament Regulation on restrictions affecting refrigeration, four new three-component refrigerants have been proposed; all were created using low Global Warming Potential(GWP) synthetic and natural refrigerants. The considered mixtures consisted of R32, R41, R161, R152a, R1234ze (E), R1234yf, R1243zf, and RE170. These mixtures were theoretically tested with a 10% step in mass fraction using a triangular design. The analysis covered two theoretical cooling cycles at evaporating temperatures of 0 and −30 °C, and a 30 °C constant condensing temperature. The final stage of the work was the determination of the best mixture compositions by thermodynamic and operational parameters. R1234yf−R152a−RE170 with a weight share of 0.1/0.5/0.4 was determined to be the optimal mixture for potentially replacing the existing refrigerants.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deep transfer learning, fault diagnosis, rolling bearings, unbalance samples
Fault diagnosis under the condition of data sets or samples with only a few fault labels has become a hot spot in the field of machinery fault diagnosis. To solve this problem, a fault diagnosis method based on deep transfer learning is proposed. Firstly, the discriminator of the generative adversarial network (GAN) is improved by enhancing its sparsity, and then adopts the adversarial mechanism to continuously optimize the recognition ability of the discriminator; finally, the parameter transfer learning (PTL) method is applied to transfer the trained discriminator to target domain to solve the fault diagnosis problem with only a small number of label samples. Experimental results show that this method has good fault diagnosis performance.

Collapse of n Point Vortices, Formation of the Vortex Sheets and Transport of Passive Markers
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: collapse, passive markers transport, point vortex, vortex sheets
In this paper, the motion of the n-vortex system as it collapses to a point in finite time is studied. The motion of vortices is described by the set of ordinary differential equations that we are able to solve analytically. The explicit formula for the solution demands the initial location of collapsing vortices. To find the collapsing locations of vortices, the algebraic, nonlinear system of equations was built. The solution of that algebraic system was obtained using Newton’s procedure. A good initial iterate needs to be provided to succeed in the application of Newton’s procedure. An unconstrained Leverber−Marquart optimization procedure was used to find such a good initial iterate. The numerical studies were conducted, and numerical evidence was presented that if in a collapsing system n=50 point vortices include a few vortices with much greater intensities than the others in the set, the vortices with weaker intensities organize themselves onto the vortex sheet. Three-phase inverters are widely used in grid-connected renewable energy systems. This paper presents a new control methodology for grid-connected inverters using an adaptive fuzzy control (AFC) technique. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct drive, experimental study, speed mode, torque mode, transfer function
The torque mode is more suitable for the direct drive 6 degree of freedom (6-DOF) parallel mechanism than the speed mode that both dynamic coupling and current coupling among motors are easily solved, but its key parameters and dynamic characteristics have never been studied, which are important and are the goals of this paper. First the hydraulic system of the direct drive 6-DOF parallel mechanism is simplified. Then the transfer function of the direct drive hydraulic system with the torque mode is deduced together with that of the speed mode. Finally, comparative experiments are conducted.
