Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: alternative energy sector, conventional energy sector, COVID-19, COVID-19 new cases, Markov-switching model, novel coronavirus pandemic, stringency of government anti-COVID-19 policy
The outbreak and rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the global financial markets, including the energy sector. Alternative energy belongs to the economy’s key sectors concerning environmental issues and seems to be a full-fledged alternative for fossil-based conventional energy. This paper aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the stock market indices related to the alternative and conventional energy sector. We use daily data on the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Global Alternative Energy Index, the MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI) Energy Index, and self-developed Average-49 COVID-19 New Cases Index and Average-49 Stringency Index. The research covers the period January−October 2020. The average level of the MSCI Global Alternative Energy Index in COVID-19 year was more than a quarter higher than in 2019 while the MSCI ACWI Energy fell almost one-third in the same period. Based on the Markov-switching model, we show that both the MSCI Global Alternative E... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: digital image correlation, joint roughness, non-persistent joint, normal stress, rock bridge ratio, shear behavior
The geometrical and mechanical properties of non-persistent joints as well as the mechanical behavior of intact rock (rock bridges) are significantly effective in the shear strength of weakness planes containing non-persistent joints. Therefore, comprehensive knowledge of the shear mechanism of both joints and rock bridges is required to assess the shear strength of the planes. In this study, the shear behavior of specimens containing a single non-persistent rough joint is investigated. A novel procedure was used to prepare cast specimens embedding a non-persistent (disc-shaped) rough joint using 3D printing and casting technology, and the shear strength of the specimens was examined through an extensive direct shear testing program under constant normal load (CNL) condition. Three levels for three different variables of the joint roughness, rock bridge ratio, and normal stress were considered, and the effects of these factors on the shear behavior of prepared samples were tested. Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon quantum dots, furfural, hydrothermal carbonization, hydroxymethylfurfural, microcrystalline cellulose
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are nanomaterials with a particle size range of 2 to 10 nm. CQDs have a wide range of applications such as medical diagnostics, bio-imaging, biosensors, coatings, solar cells, and photocatalysis. Although the effect of various experimental parameters, such as the synthesis method, reaction time, etc., have been investigated, the effect of different feedstocks on CQDs has not been studied yet. In this study, CQDs were synthesized from hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, and microcrystalline cellulose via hydrothermal carbonization at 220 °C for 30 min of residence time. The produced CQDs showed green luminescence behavior under the short-wavelength UV light. Furthermore, the optical properties of CQDs were investigated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and emission spectrophotometer, while the morphology and chemical bonds of CQDs were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Results showe... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dimensioning, efficiency, Energy Storage, grid code, renewable energies, supercapacitor, Wave Energy
The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for dimensioning an energy storage system (ESS) to the generation data measured in an operating wave energy generation plant connected to the electric grid in the north of Spain. The selection criterion for the ESS is the compliance of the power injected into the grid with a specific active-power ramp-rate limit. Due to its electrical characteristics, supercapacitor (SC) technology is especially suitable for this application. The ESS dimensioning methodology is based on a mathematical model, which takes into account the power generation system, the chosen ramp-rate limit, the ESS efficiency maps and electrical characteristics. It allows one to evaluate the number of storage cabinets required to satisfy the needs described, considering a compromise between the number of units, which means cost, and the reliability of the storage system to ensure the grid codes compliance. Power and energy parameters for the ESS are obtained from the calc... [more]

Keywords: 5G, 5G NR, critical communication, delay spread, Doppler shift, GSM-R, high speed, HSR, Hyperloop, LTE-R, MIMO, network architecture, propagation, railway, vacuum train, vacuum tube high-speed train, WiFi, wireless channel
The new generation of capsules that circulate through vacuum tubes at speeds up to 1200 km/h, which is being developed, demands communication systems that can operate at these speeds with high capacity and quality of service. Currently, the two technologies available are the new generation of 802.11ax networks and 5G NR. Using these technologies at such high speeds in a confined environment requires a careful study and design of the configuration of the network and optimization of the physical interface. This paper describes the requirements for critical and business communications, proposing a WLAN and 5G network design based on the analysis of the propagation characteristics and constraints of vacuum tubes and using propagation measurements and simulations made in similar environments at frequencies of 2.5/5.7/24 GHz. These measurements and simulations show that propagation losses in this environment are low (4−5 dB/100 m), as a consequence of the guided propagation, so that the use... [more]

Keywords: DNS, Machine Learning, neural networks, turbulence, turbulent structures
The behaviours of individual flow structures have become a relevant matter of study in turbulent flows as the computational power to allow their study feasible has become available. Especially, high instantaneous Reynolds Stress events have been found to dominate the behaviour of the logarithmic layer. In this work, we present a viability study where two machine learning solutions are proposed to reduce the computational cost of tracking such structures in large domains. The first one is a Multi-Layer Perceptron. The second one uses Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Both of the methods are developed with the objective of taking the the structures’ geometrical features as inputs from which to predict the structures’ geometrical features in future time steps. Some of the tested Multi-Layer Perceptron architectures proved to perform better and achieve higher accuracy than the LSTM architectures tested, providing lower errors on the predictions and achieving higher accuracy in relating the st... Subject: Materials
Keywords: Coal, determination methane content, gas loss, methane content of coal
The determination of natural gas content in coal seams is essential to safe mining activities and to estimate gas resources. It is used to estimate methane emissions into workings, which is very important when using preventive measures of methane ignition and explosion. Methane content in a coal seam is mostly determined using a direct method. However, a problem with estimation of gas loss during collecting a sample in a mine occurs in each method. That gas loss is estimated using different procedures. In the Polish mining industry, methane content in a coal seam is mostly determined during roadway advancing faces in coal seams. The differences in procedures for determining methane content in coal in various laboratories gave rise to starting research into developing a new method. This article presents results of study of gas loss unification for the determination of methane content in coal seams. The research focused mainly on determining a uniform method for estimating gas loss using... [more]

Keywords: bootstrapping, COVID-19 pandemic, Demand Side Response, digital settlements, load profiles, lockdown, peak power, power use, prosumer, residential electricity users
The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown can be regarded as a forced social experiment, the results of which show how to use energy under specific conditions. During this period, there was a reduction in electricity consumption at the level of the power system, but a different specificity distinguishes the group of household users. The article aims at presenting and analysing the identified issues concerning residential electricity users based on the experience from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Data from energy meters from almost 7000 flats in Warsaw’s housing estates during the lockdown in 2020 and the analogous period before the pandemic were used. The analysis showed that, on average, residential users staying practically the whole day in their flats increased their energy consumption, but without increasing their average daily peak power, smoothing the profile in the morning hours to the level reaching the peak power that had occurred in the analogous period before the... Lithium-Ion Capacitors: A Review of Design and Active Materials
Jacob J. Lamb, Odne S. Burheim
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon, cathodes, lithium-ion capacitors, nodes, oxides, silicon
Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) have gained significant attention in recent years for their increased energy density without altering their power density. LICs achieve higher capacitance than traditional supercapacitors due to their hybrid battery electrode and subsequent higher voltage. This is due to the asymmetric action of LICs, which serves as an enhancer of traditional supercapacitors. This culminates in the potential for pollution-free, long-lasting, and efficient energy-storing that is required to realise a renewable energy future. This review article offers an analysis of recent progress in the production of LIC electrode active materials, requirements and performance. In-situ hybridisation and ex-situ recombination of composite materials comprising a wide variety of active constituents is also addressed. The possible challenges and opportunities for future research based on LICs in energy applications are also discussed.

Keywords: energy analysis, heat pump water heater, home energy management system, photovoltaic, self-sufficiency rate, storage battery
Japan’s energy consumption in 2018 was about 2.5 times that in 1975, with the increase in the household sector being the largest at 28%. Most of primary energy is still fossil fuel, and it is urgent to reduce energy consumption in the household sector. The purpose of this paper was to identify ways to reduce household energy consumption without compromising the quality of life in residence. However, the reduction methods vary by region, building specifications, household type, equipment specifications, season, and weather. The value of this paper is based on a systematic analysis of home energy management systems (HEMS) data from about 50,000 households under various conditions. We are analyzing ways to reduce energy consumption. Few studies have analyzed this much back-up data, which is likely to lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions across the household sector. To explore ways to reduce energy consumption in this sector, the company has introduced and provided services for home energy... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aging effect, outer jacket degradation, predictive maintenance, railway industry, wire communication
Among the variety of problems encountered in transmission lines, the outer jacket degradation-derived faults of communication cables in railway applications have a significant impact on the transmission line parameters, especially if the cables are exposed to extremely varying environmental conditions, such as temperature deviation and humidity changes. In this paper, an advanced model of a twisted pair communication cable is proposed, together with approximated degradation functions for distributed parameters of the model, such as the shielding inductance, resistance, and capacitance per meter of cable length. This allows for gathering the distributed parameters for the proposed model under specific environmental conditions. The degradation functions for the parameters have been identified and compared with simulation results, including the communication speed and frequency band, and it has been confirmed that the transmission reliability depends on the cable condition. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: external environmental parameters, failure, Fault Detection, overhead power transmission lines, power systems, relay protection
The drastic consequences of emergencies force us to look for ways to increase the stability of the device operation at overhead power transmission lines (OHPTL). It can be achieved by developing new algorithms for determining the protection operation setpoints and detecting the damage location. Fault detection at OHPTL of 10 kV and above is mainly carried out by the devices based on the measurement of emergency mode parameters. For fault detecting one should analyze the parameters of not only current and voltage at the accident time, but also of the overhead power line. Specific active resistance, specific reactance, specific active conductivity and specific reactive conductivity are used to characterize the overhead power transmission lines. As a rule, these parameters are normalized to the unit of length of the overhead line (OHL) and linear values are used in the calculations. When analyzing power lines, tabular approximate values of longitudinal and transversal parameters in equiva... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coherence analysis, contact electrification, current measurement, frequency analysis, short-time Fourier transform, signal processing, streaming electrification, swinging electrodes
In this paper, a device with swinging plate electrodes has been proposed to measure contact electrification of a liquid sample. The proposed structure is composed of two parallel metallic plates immersed in a dielectric liquid. One of the plates is swinging with a constant frequency in a range from 0.4 to 4 Hz. The paper investigates the dependence in time and frequency of electrode velocity and streaming electrification. The measured current occurs for a very low intermittent velocity of less than 10 mm/s. In this range, the electrification current is around 50 pA. For higher velocities of up to 150 mm/s, the current is at the level of 1200 pA. The time−frequency characteristic using short-time Fourier transform shows no temporal changes in the frequency spectrum. The dependence of electrification on shuttle speed was calculated and it can be approximated with a second order polynomial model with the determination coefficient higher than 0.9. The advantage of the sensor is the ability... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous systems, batch procedure, drilling automation, Fault Detection, hybrid AI, Markov decision process, mitigation and recovery, responsible artificial intelligence (AI), safe mode management, safe operating envelope
The drilling process is complex because unexpected situations may occur at any time. Furthermore, the drilling system is extremely long and slender, therefore prone to vibrations and often being dominated by long transient periods. Adding the fact that measurements are not well distributed along the drilling system, with the majority of real-time measurements only available at the top side and having only access to very sparse data from downhole, the drilling process is poorly observed therefore making it difficult to use standard control methods. Therefore, to achieve completely autonomous drilling operations, it is necessary to utilize a method that is capable of estimating the internal state of the drilling system from parsimonious information while being able to make decisions that will keep the operation safe but effective. A solution enabling autonomous decision-making while drilling has been developed. It relies on an optimization of the time to reach the section total depth (TD... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, injection water treatment, offshore oil and gas industry, online monitoring, total suspended solids, water quality
The importance and awareness of accurate online water quality measurements increase every year in the oil and gas sector, whether it is for reducing oil discharge, preparing produced water for reinjection, or improving operational performance. For online measurement techniques to yield valuable analytical information, an understanding of their outputs must be established. Produced water reinjection has gained increasing attention in the last decade, as it can minimize negative environmental impacts by reducing oil discharge and has the potential to extend the economic life of reservoirs. To increase the amount of produced water that can be reinjected, the water must be maintained at a sufficient quality to prevent unintended formation damage. This review paper thoroughly describes different water quality issues related to suspended solids that can occur in an injection water treatment system and how the issues are often interlinked. A case study of measuring the total suspended solids... [more]
Solar-Powered Charging Networks for Electric Vehicles
Larry Erickson, Stephanie Ma
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity, Paris Agreement, solar, supply and demand, sustainable development, Wind
The cost of solar-generated electricity and battery costs have been decreasing significantly. These developments can be combined to introduce solar-powered charging networks with demand management prices (DMP) to enable electric vehicle (EV) customers to help utilities to manage renewable energy. As solar-generated electricity becomes the cheapest source of power, the need to increase demand for electricity during the day can be met by charging EVs at an attractive DMP in parking lots with solar panels and charging stations that are connected to the electrical grid. The demand for electricity can be managed and controlled by the utility with the goal of increasing demand for power as needed so that all electricity that is generated can be sold. The proposal is to introduce a new DMP rate that is only implemented when the utility wants to increase demand and sell power at this low rate in order to make full use of the supply. As utilities strive to reach 100% renewable electrical power... [more]

Keywords: catalytic converter, cell density, cordierite, light-off, monolith, wall thickness
This study investigates geometric parameters of commercially available or recently published models of catalyst substrates for passenger vehicles and provides a numerical evaluation of their influence on heat-up behavior. Parameters considered to have a significant impact on the thermal economy of a monolith are: internal surface area, heat transfer coefficient, and mass of the converter, as well as its heat capacity. During simulation experiments, it could be determined that the primary role is played by the mass of the monolith and its internal surface area, while the heat transfer coefficient only has a secondary role. Furthermore, an optimization loop was implemented, whereby the internal surface area of a commonly used substrate was chosen as a reference. The lengths of the thin wall and high cell density monoliths investigated were adapted consecutively to obtain the reference internal surface area. The results obtained by this optimization process contribute to improving the hea... [more]
