Developing On-Road NOx Emission Factors for Euro 6b Light-Duty Diesel Trucks in Korean Driving Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emission factor, Euro 6b, light-duty diesel truck, nitrogen oxide, Real Driving Emissions (RDE)
This study aimed to develop on-road NOx emission factors for Euro 6b light-duty diesel trucks (LDDTs) in Korea. On-road NOx emissions were measured using portable emissions measurement systems and compared with those measured using the Korean Driving Cycle (KDC), the conventional laboratory test used to develop emission factors. To ensure the representativeness of the LDDTs emission factors, five vehicles of three models were driven along two real driving routes for total traveled mileage of 2280 km. On-road NOx levels were 2.1 to 6.9 times higher on average than those measured using the KDC because the latter does not cover the wide variability in vehicle speed and relative positive acceleration, common in real driving conditions. The lean-NOx trap was found to have disappointingly low NOx reduction efficiency in on-road driving. The on-road NOx emission factors by vehicle speeds developed in this study were comparable to the COPERT 4 factors.

Crashed Electric Vehicle Handling and Recommendations—State of the Art in Germany
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accident, battery, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, fire extinguishing, handling, high voltage, recommendation, rescue service, thermal runaway
In the near future, electric powered vehicles will represent a major part of the road traffic. Accordingly, there will be a natural increase of accidents involving electric vehicles. There are not many cases of such accidents yet and therefore the experience and correct handling are still partially open points for the involved parties, such as the rescue services for example. The aim of this work is to provide a complete overview of the accident handling sequence in Germany, starting with the damaged vehicle on site and moving on to the risks and challenges for the stakeholders, such as transport and recycling companies. Arising from the developed overview, a handling recommendation for yet undiscussed points is given. Especially, different extinguishing and deactivation methods are compared and discussed. Due to a lack of a common live-feed from battery data on site, other criteria have to be taken into account to assess the state of the battery. The wrecked vehicle—including the high... [more]

Control of the Transformer Phase Powers Using a Single-Phase Voltage Source
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control system for grids, power inverter control, smart grids, transformer power control
Power flow in three-phase distribution grids containing single-phase prosumer voltage sources strongly depends on the RMS value of the voltage of these sources and their phase shifts in relation to the grid voltage. The ideal way to control single-phase prosumer sources should guarantee no return active power to the MV grid through a distribution transformer and no additional reactive power flows in the LV grid. This means that the active power of the one-phase voltage source is consumed by other single-phase customers (in the same phase or in other phases) and the reactive power of this source is equal to zero. The paper presents the results of the investigations of the dynamic control system of a single-phase voltage source that allows meeting these conditions. On the basis of steady-state calculations, the static characteristics of the above-mentioned control, needed to determine of the proper working point of a prosumer source were also obtained. The control process involves the co... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite-time thermodynamics, hybrid system, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Stirling Engine
This paper presents the work for efficiency enhancement on a hybrid power system with an irreversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Stirling Engine (SE) for various system design using the approach of finite-time thermodynamics. The SOFC-based cogeneration system was integrated with an SE and several heat components. The effects of design configurations using various interface components on system performance were investigated. By analyzing the SE with finite-time thermodynamics and considering multiple irreversible factors of output power given by the SOFC, the efficiency of the calculation can be more practical and accurate. In this study, the working efficiency of the proposed hybrid system was enhanced by 16.37% compared to that of the conventional system at an intermediate temperature of 873 K. The design approach proposed herein is considered an essential package for building highly efficient power systems working in the intermediate temperature range.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-oils, Biomass, grape residue, liquefaction, pyrolysis, steam
Biomass residues are often considered as a resource if conveniently converted in fuel and alternative feedstock for chemical processes, and their conversion into valuable products may occur by different pathways. This work is focused on the thermochemical conversion at moderate temperature and in steam atmosphere, a mild process in comparison to hydrothermal liquefaction, followed by extraction of soluble products in a solvent. Such process has been already applied to various residues and here extended to the case of marc, the residual pomace from wine making, largely produced worldwide. A pressurized batch reactor was used for the quantitative determination of produced solid and liquid fractions, and their qualitative characterization was performed by instrumental analyses. The pressurized steam conversion of marc was effective, providing a yield in liquid fraction, upon extraction in solvent, up to 30% of the raw dried biomass. Subject: Materials
Keywords: extreme wind speed, Monte Carlo simulation, offshore typhoon farms, roughness length, wind-wave coupling
Large-scale offshore wind farms (OWF) are under construction along the southeastern coast of China, an area with a high typhoon incidence. Measured data and typhoon simulation model are used to improve the reliability of extreme wind speed (EWS) forecasts for OWF affected by typhoons in this paper. Firstly, a 70-year historical typhoon record database is statistically analyzed to fit the typhoon parameters probability distribution functions, which is used to sample key parameters when employing Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). The sampled typhoon parameters are put into the Yan Meng (YM) wind field to generate massive virtual typhoon in the MCS. Secondly, when typhoon simulation carried out, the change in wind field roughness caused by the wind-wave coupling is studied. A simplified calculation method for realizing this phenomenon is applied by exchanging roughness length in the parametric wind field and wave model. Finally, the extreme value theory is adopted to analyze the simulated typ... [more]

Case Study of Roadway Deformation Failure Mechanisms: Field Investigation and Numerical Simulation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complex engineering geological conditions, failure mechanisms, field investigation, PFC
The safety of underground roadways is a major issue in mining engineering, with economic impacts and potential threats to the lives of workers. Elucidating the deformation failure mechanisms is necessary to solve these problems. The deformation failure modes and characteristics of roadways buried at various depths were investigated using a detailed field survey in the Jinchuan nickel mine. At greater depths, roadway deformation was more serious, the creep phenomena were more prominent, and support structures were more prone to failure. Numerical simulations were performed on the roadways under various geo-stresses and rock mass structures, which indicated that the roadway deformation mode was mainly controlled by a rock mass structure in a lower stress environment and the control effect was weakened with the gradual increase of ground stress. Six deformation failure types were proposed to examine roadway deformation failure mechanisms. Field representation of each failure type was char... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, numerical modelling, powered support, safety elements
The paper describes a case study of the safety hydraulic system damage in the working of a longwall in a Polish coal mine. The safety elements are a component of the powered roof supports which secure the shield against damage during rock burst incidents. The damage event, which occurred in the hydraulic system during the mining process, caused the uncontrolled lowering of the powered roof support height during the mining process. The uncontrolled lowering of a shield may cause the danger of the loss of the stability along the longwall working in the form of a rock burst and collapses and may represent a serious and immediate danger to the safety and health of employees. Based on the results of the computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD) analysis of the safety elements in the hydraulic system of longwall 2-leg shield, the causes of damage were diagnosed and presented. The CFD and the strength analysis by the finite element method (FEM) were used for numerical modeling. The diagrams... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building stock model, building typology, census data sets, construction period, district heating potential, GIS, heat demand density, hectare grid cells, municipality sections, residential buildings
Heat demand of buildings and related CO2 emissions caused by energy supply contribute to global climate change. Spatial data-based heat planning enables municipalities to reorganize local heating sectors towards efficient use of regional renewable energy resources. Here, annual heat demand of residential buildings is modeled and mapped for a German federal state to provide regional basic data. Using a 3D building stock model and standard values of building-type-specific heat demand from a regional building typology in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based bottom-up approach, a first base reference is modeled. Two spatial data sets with information on the construction period of residential buildings, aggregated on municipality sections and hectare grid cells, are used to show how census-based spatial data sets can enhance the approach. Investigation of Environmental Leaching Behavior of an Innovative Method for Landfilling of Waste Incineration Air Pollution Control Residues
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cement substitute, Energy, heavy metal stabilization, incineration residues
Waste incineration air pollution control (APC) residues require pretreatment before landfilling because these types of residues encompass pollutants from an incineration gas stream. The environmental concerns of APC residues consist of a risk of leaching and subsequent release of potentially harmful substances that occur under environmental exposure. The stabilization/solidification (S/S) method of incineration residues is one of the most applied technologies for hazardous incineration residues. Portland cement is commonly used as a binder material in S/S for pollutant encapsulation, in order to change the hydrological characteristics of the landfilled material. Based on previous research, an innovative S/S method for APC residues is investigated, meant to replace Portland cement with cement-like material made from lignite fly ash (FA). To do this, a lab-scale landfill was created through the promoted S/S method and exposed to the environment for 12 months. Thus, this article assesses... [more]

Controllable-Dual Bridge Fault Current Limiter for Interconnection Micro-Grids
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controllable dual-bridge fault current limiter (CDBFCL), controllable voltage source, micro-grid (MG)
Different types of fault current limiters (FCLs) have been developed and designed based on non-superconducting DC reactors (NSDRs). This paper proposes a controllable dual-bridge FCL (CDBFCL) based on the NSDR for use in an AC-type micro-grid. It includes a NSDR and two series and shunt bridge circuits. The series bridge is based on diode semiconductor switches and is coupled in series with the line via a transformer. The shunt bridge is based on thyristor semiconductor switches and is coupled in parallel with the line. The shunt bridge provides a variable voltage source. It compensates for the DC side voltage drop due to NSDR resistance and semiconductor switches during normal operating condition. In addition, by controlling the shunt bridge firing angle, it produces a controllable DC voltage, which can control the fault current amplitude during a fault. The structure, principle operating work, and control system of the proposed CDBFCL are presented. The CDBFCL performance is studied... [more]

Numerical Analysis of the Energy Consumption of Ventilation Processes in the School Swimming Pool
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air flow rate, air parameters, energy consumption, heat recovery, indoor swimming pool, ventilation
Ventilation of an indoor swimming pool is a very energy consuming process. This is a result of, among other things the required high value of the ventilation air volume flow rate, calculated on the basis of the moisture gains in the facility. The total energy consumption consists of the heat required to heat this air and the electricity needed to transport it. It is possible to reduce the ventilation air volume flow rate by assuming the correct value of specific humidity of the supply and indoor air, but then a deterioration of thermal-moisture conditions in the building can be expected. The aim of this paper was to examine how the reduction of the supply air volume flow rate affects the energy consumption for indoor swimming pool ventilation. It was also checked how this consumption can be reduced by using two-stage heat recovery in the air handling unit. Multi-variant simulations of energy consumption for indoor swimming pool ventilation were carried out using the IDA ICE software fo... [more]

Active Power Filter Pre-Selection Tool to Enhance the Power Quality in Oil and Gas Platforms
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power filter, G platform, O&, power quality, wide band-gap semiconductors
This paper proposes a preliminary design tool for active power filters’ (APFs) solutions to be applied in offshore oil and gas platforms, where power quality indices are typically low, and reactive power compensation and current harmonic mitigation are often desired. The proposed approach considers that APF selection and rating is a trade-off between performance and size, and that both component and system aspects need to be optimized to achieve a well-tailored solution. As size and weight are critical constraints in offshore applications, possible benefits of using Silicon Carbide (SiC) switches for the APF implementation are investigated. Moreover, different compensation strategies are compared, varying the connection point of the APF between two different voltage levels and assigning the APFs different compensation goals. Improvements in power quality indices, as well as APFs rating, number of components, power losses, and filter size, have been considered for both SiC and Silicon-b... [more]

Model-Based Design of a Pseudo-Cogenerative Heating System for e-Boat Battery Cold Start
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Batteries, energy management, environmental factors, Modelling, power conversion, thermal management
Full-electric boats are an expression of recent advancements in the area of vessel electrification. The installed batteries can suffer from poor cold-start performance, especially in the frigid season and at higher latitudes, leading to driving power limitations immediately after startup. At state, the leading solution is to adopt a dedicated heater placed on the common cooling/heating circuit; this implies poor volume, weight, and cost figures, given the very limited duty cycle of such a part. The Heater-in-Converter (HiC) technology allows removing this specialized component, exploiting the power electronics converters already available on board: HiC modulates their efficiency to produce valuable heat (pseudo-cogeneration). In this work, we use the model-based approach to design this system, which requires heating power minimization to fulfill power electronics limitations, while guaranteeing the user-expected startup time to full power. Modeling Water Droplet Freezing and Collision with a Solid Surface
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: breakage, collision, crystallization, droplet–wall sticking probability, ice crust, ice-accretion, Modelling
Water droplets released from the sea surface represent one of the major causes of ice accretion on marine vessels. A one-dimensional model of the freezing of a spherical water droplet moving in cold air was developed. The crystallization model allows one to obtain an analytical solution if a uniform temperature distribution over the liquid’s core is assumed. The model was validated using STAR CCM+ Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. A collision of a partially frozen droplet with a solid wall assuming the plastic deformation of an ice crust was also considered. The ratio of the crust deformation to the crust thickness was evaluated. It was assumed that if this ratio were to exceed unity, the droplet would stick to the wall’s surface due to ice bridge formation caused by the water released from the droplet’s core.

Zero-Sequence Voltage Injection Method for DC Capacitor Voltage Balancing of Wye-Connected CHB Converter under Unbalanced Grid and Load Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) converter, feedforward calculation, grid imbalance, leg energy balancing, load imbalance, static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), zero-sequence voltage injection
Leg capacitor energy balancing control is one of the crucial issues for stable operation of a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter. Because this topology inherently consists of numerous submodule cells with DC capacitors, the cell voltages and leg capacitor energy instantaneously fluctuate depending on operation sequence of the CHB converter. In general, a wye-connected CHB-converter-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) utilizes a zero-sequence voltage component for leg capacitor energy balancing. In this paper, to improve the dynamics of leg energy balancing control, a feedforward calculation method of the zero-sequence voltage injection is proposed. The feedforward term can be instantaneously calculated by using the information from the measured leg voltages and leg currents, and the method ensures successful regulation of the leg energy balance even under unbalanced grid and load conditions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass devolatilization, biomass pyrolysis, devolatilization model, partial least squares regression (PLS), suspension firing
As part of the strive for a carbon neutral energy production, biomass combustion has been widely implemented in retrofitted coal burners. Modeling aids substantially in prediction of biomass flame behavior and thus in boiler chamber conditions. In this work, a simple model for devolatilization of biomass at conditions relevant for suspension firing is presented. Development of a Two-Stage DQFM to Improve Efficiency of Single- and Multi-Hazard Risk Quantification for Nuclear Facilities
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: direct quantification of the fault tree using Monte Carlo simulation (DQFM), multi-hazard, nuclear power plant (NPP), risk quantification, single hazard
The probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) of a nuclear power plant (NPP) under single and multiple hazards is one of the most important tasks for disaster risk management of nuclear facilities. To date, various approaches—including the direct quantification of the fault tree using the Monte Carlo simulation (DQFM) method—have been employed to quantify single- and multi-hazard risks to nuclear facilities. The major advantage of the DQFM method is its applicability to a partially correlated system. Other methods can represent only an independent or a fully correlated system, but DQFM can quantify the risk of partially correlated system components by the sampling process. However, as a sampling-based approach, DQFM involves computational costs which increase as the size of the system and the number of hazards increase. Therefore, to improve the computational efficiency of the conventional DQFM, a two-stage DQFM method is proposed in this paper. By assigning enough samples to each hazard p... [more]

Day-Ahead Energy and Reserve Dispatch Problem under Non-Probabilistic Uncertainty

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy and reserve dispatch, imprecise uncertainty, maximinity and maximality, optimal decision
The current energy transition and the underlying growth in variable and uncertain renewable-based energy generation challenge the proper operation of power systems. Classical probabilistic uncertainty models, e.g., stochastic programming or robust optimisation, have been used widely to solve problems such as the day-ahead energy and reserve dispatch problem to enhance the day-ahead decisions with a probabilistic insight of renewable energy generation in real-time. By doing so, the scheduling of the power system becomes, production and consumption of electric power, more reliable (i.e., more robust because of potential deviations) while minimising the social costs given potential balancing actions. Nevertheless, these classical models are not valid when the uncertainty is imprecise, meaning that the system operator may not rely on a unique distribution function to describe the uncertainty. Given the Distributionally Robust Optimisation method, our approach can be implemented for any non... [more]
