Estimation of Infiltration Rate (ACH Natural) Using Blower Door Test and Simulation
Junghyon Mun, Jongik Lee, Minsung Kim
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ACHn, blower door test, crack method, EnergyPlus, flow coefficient, infiltration, pressure exponent
One of the primary factors for generating heating and cooling loads in apartment houses is infiltration. However, the evaluation method for infiltration rates has not been well established for the apartment houses in Korea. The existing method measures air change per hour of a house at 50 Pa (ACH50) and divides it by the leakage−infiltration ratio, N = 20, as suggested by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL). In this study, a method to evaluate the average infiltration rate of an apartment house using blower door tests and simulations is suggested. Six sets of blower door tests were conducted, and the measurement data were used to estimate the flow coefficients and pressure exponents of all infiltration routes. The values were used as the input data for EnergyPlus to calculate the natural air change per hour values (ACHn) of two households. The calculated ACHn values were compared to the ACHn values calculated using the LBL method, which is commonly used in Korea. Through th... [more]
Zero Voltage Switching Condition in Class-E Inverter for Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer Applications
Fabio Corti, Alberto Reatti, Ya-Hui Wu, Dariusz Czarkowski, Salvatore Musumeci
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: capacitive wireless power transfer, Class-E inverter, resonant converter, zero voltage switching
This paper presents a complete design methodology of a Class-E inverter for capacitive wireless power transfer (CWPT) applications, focusing on the capacitance coupling influence. The CWPT has been investigated in this paper, because most of the literature refers to inductive power transfer (IWPT). However, CWPT in perspective can result in lower cost and higher reliability than IWPT, because it does not need coils and related shields. The Class-E inverter has been selected, because it is a single switch inverter with a grounded MOSFET source terminal, and this leads to low costs and a simple control strategy. The presented design procedure ensures both zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero derivative switching (ZDS) conditions at an optimum coupling coefficient, thus enabling a high transmission and conversion efficiency. The novelties of the proposed method are that the output power is boosted higher than in previous papers available in the literature, the inverter is operated at a h... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electron transfer, enzymatic biofuel cell, flow design, material engineering, microfluidic cell
Because of environmental concerns, there is a growing interest in new ways to produce green energy. Among the several studied applications, enzymatic biofuel cells can be considered as a promising solution to generate electricity from biological catalytic reactions. Indeed, enzymes show very good results as biocatalysts thanks to their excellent intrinsic properties, such as specificity toward substrate, high catalytic activity with low overvoltage for substrate conversion, mild operating conditions like ambient temperature and near-neutral pH. Furthermore, enzymes present low cost, renewability and biodegradability. The wide range of applications moves from miniaturized portable electronic equipment and sensors to integrated lab-on-chip power supplies, advanced in vivo diagnostic medical devices to wearable devices. Nevertheless, enzymatic biofuel cells show great concerns in terms of long-term stability and high power output nowadays, highlighting that this particular technology is s... [more]

Cristina Baglivo, Paolo Maria Congedo, Pasquale Antonio Donno
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pump, magnetocaloric technology, thermodynamic cycles
This paper proposes a critical review of the different aspects concerning magnetic refrigeration systems, and performs a detailed analysis of thermodynamic cycles, using mathematical models found in the literature. Langevin’s statistical mechanical theory faithfully describes the physical operation of a refrigeration machine working according to a magnetic Ericsson cycle. Results of mathematical and real experimental models are compared to deduce which best describes the Ericsson cycle. The theoretical data are not perfectly consistent with the experimental data; there is a maximum deviation of about 30%. Numerical and experimental data confirm that very high Coefficient of Performance (COP) values of more than 20 can be achieved. The analysis of the Brayton cycle consisted of finding the mathematical model that considers the irreversibility of these machines. Starting from the thermodynamic properties of magnetocaloric materials based on statistical mechanics, the efficiency of an irr... [more]

Pilar Lisbona, Sara Pascual, Virginia Pérez
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BECCS, Ca-looping, energy integration, livestock waste, negative carbon emissions
The global carbon emissions from the tertiary sector have increased during the last years, becoming a target sector for carbon capture technologies. This study analyzes the potential application of a carbon capture system (CCS) to the usage of biogas from a livestock waste treatment plant (LWTP) and solid biomass. The proposed BECCS system fulfils the requirement of energy demands of the LWTP and generates electricity. The CCS is sized to consume the biogas produced and the selected operation parameters ensure a high capture efficiency. The BECCS is completed by a Rankine cycle fed by solid biomass and waste heat from the capture process is sized and implemented to produce electricity and steam. The proposed concept handles 1534 kW of solid biomass and 1398 kW of biogas to produce 746.20 kWe and cover the heat demand of a LWTP, 597 kWth. The avoided CO2 emissions sum up to 1620 ton CO2/year. The economic calculations show the limitation of this concept deployment under current prices o... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development, transition scenario
In this study we aimed to determine the extent to which changes in the share of renewable energy sources, their structural complex, and the level of energy security in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries in the medium- and long-term are interconnected. The study was performed through modeling and determination of the structural characteristics of energy security in the countries. The methodology of the approach to modeling was based on solving the problem of nonlinear optimization by selecting a certain scenario. For the study, the data of EECCA countries were used. The ability of EECCA countries to benefit from long-term indirect and induced advantages of the transformation period depends on the extent to which their domestic supply chains facilitate the deployment of energy transformation and induced economic activity. This study provides an opportunity to assess the degree of influence of renewable energy sources on the level of energy security of countries i... [more]
Particulate Modeling of Sand Production Using Coupled DEM-LBM
Siavash Honari, Ehsan Seyedi Hosseininia
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bond contact model, discrete element method, fluid–solid interaction, immersed moving boundary approach, lattice–Boltzmann method, particle erosion, radial flow, sand production
Sand production is a complex phenomenon caused by the erosion of borehole walls during the extraction of hydrocarbons. In this paper, the sanding process in a typical Thick-Walled Hollow Cylinder (TWHC) test is numerically simulated. The main objective of the study is to model the particulate mechanism of sand production in granular assemblies with different bonding conditions and examine the effects of parameters such as stress level and cavity size on the sanding model. Due to the discrete nature of sand particles, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is chosen to model solid particles, and the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) is implemented to simulate fluid flow through the solid particulate medium. A computer program is developed using the Immersed Moving Boundary (IMB) approach to couple the two methods and model fluid−solid interactions. After the program is validated, the simulations were conducted on 2D models representing cross-sections of TWHC samples under radial fluid flow. The... [more]
Optimization of Thermal Parameters of the Coke Oven Battery by Modified Methodology of Temperature Measurement in Heating Flues as the Management Tool in the Cokemaking Industry

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coke oven battery, heating flues, temperature adjustment, temperature measurement
Coke production is still of great economic importance due to its crucial role in the steel production process. The reliability of the operation of coke oven batteries depends on the maintenance of good technical condition of their ceramic massif, which in turn requires ensuring proper operation of the heating system and maintaining temperature stability in the heating flues. Regularly performed temperature measurements in heating flues due to the size of the battery and the dynamics of accompanying processes do not reflect the actual thermal state of the object at a given time. Corrections commonly introduced to the results of temperature measurements in heating flues, taking into account so-called reversion, significantly improve the accuracy of the obtained measurement results. However, still the interpretation of the results of temperature measurements in the coke oven battery heating flues does not take into account its changes during the coking cycle, even though they reach up to... A Novel Structure of a Power System Stabilizer for Microgrids
Jong Ju Kim, June Ho Park
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low-frequency oscillation, microgrids, power system stabilizer, small-signal stability, synchronous generator, transient stability
This paper proposes a novel structure of a power system stabilizer (PSS) to improve the stability of synchronous generators (SGs) in microgrids. Microgrids are relatively vulnerable in terms of stability due to their small size and low inertia. The rotational inertia and voltage support of SGs are highly suitable for getting over the vulnerabilities of microgrids, but there exist weaknesses in low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) and limitations of synchronization due to electromagnetic characteristics. Therefore, we study how to accommodate the features of microgrids in the PSS of SGs and further enhance present advantages. The PSS proposed in this paper not only damps out LFOs by conventional lead-lag compensation but also provides additional damping torque according to the magnitude of the perturbation using a synchronous impedance characteristic (SIC). The proposed Lyapunov energy-function-based control strategy can also increase the synchronizing power of the SG to improve transient... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, efficiency, innovation, performance, Sustainability
Bioenergy, along with other renewables, has always played its part in the world’s energy transition. Tracking the progress to meet specific goals has long been tackled and led to performance evaluation in the field. The present study aims to contribute to this area with a performance assessment framework in the bioenergy field. It comprises 16 European countries and 30 indicators assigned to three dimensions: innovation, efficiency, and sustainability and it follows a well-established methodology. For enabling country-to-country comparison, five maps are designed for better illustration. The country performance ranking is one of the main outputs of the analysis, revealing the outperformers and the weakest countries from its bottom half, as well as the particularities of countries scoring on each of the three dimensions. The policy recommendations and study limitations represent the most relevant part of the conclusions.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CapEx method, capital expenditure (CapEx), cost breakdown and parameterisation, cost model, Froude law similarities, Similitude method, Technoeconomic Analysis, wave energy converter (WEC)
Wave energy converters (WECs) can play a significant role in the transition towards a more renewable-based energy mix as stable and unlimited energy resources. Financial analysis of these projects requires WECs cost and WEC capital expenditure (CapEx) information. However, (i) cost information is often limited due to confidentiality and (ii) the wave energy field lacks flexible methods for cost breakdown and parameterisation, whereas they are needed for rapid and optimised WEC configuration and worldwide site pairing. This study takes advantage of the information provided by Wavepiston to compare different costing methods. The work assesses the Froude-Law-similarities-based “Similitude method” for cost-scaling and introduces the more flexible and generic “CapEx method” divided into three steps: (1) distinguishing WEC’s elements from the wave energy farm (WEF)’s; (2) defining the parameters characterising the WECs, WEFs, and site locations; and (3) estimating elements that affect WEC an... Keywords: backward/forward sweep, breadth first search, data structures, distribution network, power flow algorithm, radial network, runtime, tree-like structure
The increase of distributed energy resources (DERs) in low voltage (LV) distribution networks requires the ability to perform an accurate power flow analysis (PFA) in unbalanced systems. The characteristics of a well performing power flow algorithm are the production of accurate results, robustness and quick convergence. The current study proposes an improvement to an already used backward-forward sweep (BFS) power flow algorithm for unbalanced three-phase distribution networks. The proposed power flow algorithm can be implemented in large systems producing accurate results in a small amount of time using as little computational resources as possible. In this version of the algorithm, the network is represented in a tree-like structure, instead of an incidence matrix, avoiding the use of redundant computations and the storing of unnecessary data. An implementation of the method was developed in Python programming language and tested for 3 IEEE feeder test cases (the 4 bus feeder, the 1... [more]
Research Progress and Prospects of Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pump Capability for Handling Gas−Liquid Multiphase Flow: Comparison and Empirical Model Validation

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, electrical submersible pumps, empirical models, flow visualization, gas-handling techniques, multiphase flow, petroleum industries, viscosity analysis
The working capability of multi-stage pumps, such as electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) handling multiphase flow, has always been a big challenge for petroleum industries. The major problem is associated with the agglomeration of gas bubbles inside ESP-impellers, causing pump performance degradation ranging from mild to severe deterioration (surging/gas pockets). Previous literature showed that the two-phase performance of ESPs is greatly affected by gas involvement, rotational speed, bubble size, and fluid viscosity. Thus, it is necessary to understand which parameter is actually accountable for performance degradation and different flow patterns in ESP, and how it can be controlled. The present study is mainly focused on (1) the main parameters that impede two-phase performance of different ESPs; (2) comparison of existing empirical models (established for two-phase performance prediction and surging initiation) with our single-stage centrifugal pump results to determine their valid... Keywords: conversion efficiency, evacuated flat panel, selective solar absorber, solar energy, thermal emittance, thermal energy
A new Selective Solar Absorber, designed to improve the Sun-to-thermal conversion efficiency at mid temperatures in high vacuum flat thermal collectors, is presented. Efficiency has been evaluated by using analytical formulas and a numerical thermal model. Both results have been experimentally validated using a commercial absorber in a custom experimental set-up. The optimization procedure aimed at obtaining Selective Solar Absorber is presented and discussed in the case of a metal dielectric multilayer based on Cr2O3 and Ti. The importance of adopting a real spectral emissivity curve to estimate high thermal efficiency at high temperatures in a selective solar absorber is outlined. Optimized absorber multilayers can be 10% more efficient than the commercial alternative at 250 °C operating temperatures, reaching 400 °C stagnation temperature without Sun concentration confirming that high vacuum flat thermal collectors can give important contribution to the energy transition from fossil... Keywords: battery lifetime, flywheel, hybrid electric bus, hybrid energy storage system, Model Predictive Control, rule-based control
Electrification of transportation is an effective way to tackle climate change. Public transportation, such as electric buses, operate on predetermined routes and offer quiet operation, zero local emissions and high energy efficiency. However, the batteries of these buses are expensive and wear out in use. The battery ageing is expedited by fast charging and power spikes during operation. The contribution of this paper is the reduction of the power spikes and thus a prolonged battery lifetime. A novel hybrid energy storage system for electric buses is proposed by introducing a flywheel in addition to the existing battery. A simulation model of the hybrid energy storage system is presented, including a battery ageing model to measure the battery lifetime. The bus was simulated during its daily driving operation on different routes with different energy management strategies and flywheel configurations. These different flywheels as well as the driving cycle had a significant impact on th... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experimental analysis, PV cooling, PV efficiency improvement, spray cooling, water cooling
Crystalline silicon photovoltaics are a cardinal and well-consolidated technology for the achievement of energy efficiency goals, being installed worldwide for the production of clean electrical energy. However, their performance is strongly penalized by the thermal drift, mostly in periods of high solar radiation where solar cells reach considerably high temperatures. To limit this aspect, the employment of cooling systems appears a promising and viable solution. For this purpose, four different cooling systems, working on the photovoltaic (PV) panel back surface, were proposed and investigated in an experimental set-up located at the University of Calabria (Italy). Hourly electrical output power and efficiency were provided accounting for different meteorological conditions in several months of the experimental campaign. The results demonstrated that a simple spray cooling technique can provide an absolute increment of electrical efficiency of up to 1.6% and an average percentage inc... [more]

Keywords: bioenergy, biomass resources, crop residues, energy potential, GIS
Agriculture residue is a promising resource of energy. It can be seen as a source of power production. In India, there is a huge amount of biomass available, but it cannot be used in proper ways, and with the help of GIS it can be customised. In the present paper, it is estimated that biomass reserves are available for power generation. The biomass produced by the surplus agricultural crops is reflected as a source of fuel for electricity generation. The data taken by satellite are useful for assessment of the areas with the help of satellite images taken in high resolution, which increases the preciseness of estimation. An agriculture cropland map with agricultural statistics has been analyzed in GIS to discover the agricultural straw potential for bioenergy generation. Due to unawareness about the benefits and uses of GIS, the modern farming sector bears a loss of huge bioenergy potential every year. To overcome the above mentioned challenges, the agricultural system needs a major sh... [more]
A Model for Multiple Hydraulic Fracture Propagation with Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Coupling Effects
Tianwei Sun, Qingdong Zeng, Huilin Xing
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: displacement discontinuity method, hydraulic fracturing, multiple fractures, stress shadowing, thermal stress
In this study, a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model to simulate multiple hydraulic fracture propagation is presented. Fracture propagation with elastic deformation is described by using a displacement discontinuity method. The temperature distribution and induced thermal stress are calculated via a semi-analytical method in an explicit way. An iterative scheme is proposed to solve the coupling between fracture propagation with fluid flow and induced thermal stress. The numerical model is validated against related analytical solutions. Several numerical cases are modeled to investigate the controlling factors for uniform growth of multiple fractures. Results show that using non-uniform fracture spacings and proper increasing the spacing for fractures away from the heel of wellbore promote the uniform growth of multiple fractures by comparison with using uniform fracture spacings. Increasing the perforation diameter for the middle cluster also works. Besides, single-wing fracturing co... [more]

Keywords: actuator disk, Alderney Race, blockage, Telemac3D, tidal turbine
Assessing the efficiency of a tidal turbine array is necessary for adequate device positioning and the reliable evaluation of annual energy production. Array efficiency depends on hydrodynamic characteristics, operating conditions, and blockage effects, and is commonly evaluated by relying on analytical models or more complex numerical simulations. By applying the conservations of mass, momentum, and energy in an idealized flow field, analytical models derive formulations of turbines’ thrust and power as a function of the induction factor (change in the current velocity induced by turbines). This simplified approach also gives a preliminary characterization of the influence of blockage on array efficiency. Numerical models with turbines represented as actuator disks also enable the assessment of the efficiency of a tidal array. We compare here these two approaches, considering the numerical model as a reference as it includes more physics than the analytical models. The actuator disk a... [more]
Rock Pillar Design Using a Masonry Equivalent Numerical Model
Ricardo Moffat, Cristian Caceres, Eugenia Tapia
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design numerical model, mining, rock pillar, underground stability
In underground mining, the design of rock pillars is of crucial importance as these are structures that allow safe mining by maintaining the stability of the surrounding excavations. Pillar design is often a complex task, as it involves estimating the loads at depths and the strength of the rock mass fabric, which depend on the intact strength of the rock and the shape of the pillar in terms of the aspect ratio (width/height). The design also depends on the number, persistence, orientation, and strength of the discontinuities with respect to the orientation and magnitude of the stresses present. Solutions to this engineering problem are based on one or more of the following approaches: empirical design methods, practical experience, and/or numerical modeling. Based on the similarities between masonry structures and rock mass characteristics, an equivalent approach is proposed as the one commonly used in masonry but applied to rock pillar design. Numerical models using different geometr... [more]
Modeling of Ultra-Short Term Offshore Wind Power Prediction Based on Condition-Assessment of Wind Turbines
Suo Li, Ling-ling Huang, Yang Liu, Meng-yao Zhang
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: health condition, LSTM, offshore wind turbines, wind power prediction
More accurate wind power prediction (WPP) is of great significance for the operation of electrical power systems, as offshore wind power penetration increases continuously. As the offshore wind turbines (OWT) are a key system in converting offshore wind power into electrical power, maintaining their condition plays a pivotal role in WPP. However, it is seldom considered in traditional WPP. This paper proposes an ultra-short term offshore WPP methodology based on the condition assessment (CA) of OWTs. Firstly, a modified fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (MFCE) based CA of the OWT is presented with a new defined deterioration of indicators calculated by the relative errors. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is introduced to deal with the complicated interactions between the various monitoring data of an OWT and the dynamic marine environment. Then, with the classifications of the health conditions of the OWT, the historical operation data is classified accordingly. An OWT-condit... [more]
Development of an Efficient Thermal Electric Skipping Strategy for the Management of a Series/Parallel Hybrid Powertrain

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: computational efficiency, energy management, fuel economy, hybrid powertrain, optimization strategy
In recent years, the development of hybrid powertrain allowed to substantially reduce the CO2 and pollutant emissions of vehicles. The optimal management of such power units represents a challenging task since more degrees of freedom are available compared to a conventional pure-thermal engine powertrain. The a priori knowledge of the driving mission allows identifying the actual optimal control strategy at the expense of a quite relevant computational effort. This is realized by the off-line optimization strategies, such as Pontryagin minimum principle—PMP—or dynamic programming. On the other hand, for an on-vehicle application, the driving mission is unknown, and a certain performance degradation must be expected, depending on the degree of simplification and the computational burden of the adopted control strategy. This work is focused on the development of a simplified control strategy, labeled as efficient thermal electric skipping strategy—ETESS, which presents performance simila... [more]
Design, Analysis and Implementation of the Tapped-Inductor Boost Current Converter on Current Based System
Chim Pui Leung, Ka Wai Eric Cheng
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, current based system, current converter, tapped-inductor
Power converters play a crucial role in renewable energy systems. Most well-known power conversion topologies are voltage mode, not current mode. Current mode converters are more appropriate for renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic systems since solar panels are typical current sources. The vast usage of battery as energy storage is also a current sink for constant current mode charging. Utilizing current mode converters should be more straightforward and judicious. In this study, a new topology for the tapped-inductor power conversion circuit family is introduced. The proposed topology has been investigated thoroughly based on theories, simulations and experiments. The boost version is examined as an example to downstate the performance. A detailed comparison with the conventional boost current converter is conducted in this paper.
A New Peak-Shaving Model Based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming with Variable Peak-Shaving Order
Xianliang Cheng, Suzhen Feng, Yanxuan Huang, Jinwen Wang
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Lancang hydropower cascade, mixed integer linear programming (MILP), peak-shaving, short-term scheduling
Peak-shaving is a very efficient and practical strategy for a day-ahead hydropower scheduling in power systems, usually aiming to appropriately schedule hourly (or in less time interval) power generations of individual plants so as to smooth the load curve while enforcing the energy production target of each plant. Nowadays, the power marketization and booming development of renewable energy resources are complicating the constraints and diversifying the objectives, bringing challenges for the peak-shaving method to be more flexible and efficient. Without a pre-set or fixed peak-shaving order of plants, this paper formulates a new peak-shaving model based on the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to solve the scheduling problem in an optimization way. Compared with the traditional peak-shaving methods that need to determine the order of plants to peak-shave the load curve one by one, the present model has better flexibility as it can handle the plant-based operating zones and prio...
