Inertia and Droop Frequency Control Strategy of Doubly-Fed Induction Generator Based on Rotor Kinetic Energy and Supercapacitor
Xiangwu Yan, Xuewei Sun
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: droop control, rotor kinetic energy, supercapacitor, virtual inertia
The large-scale application of wind power eases the shortage of conventional energy, but it also brings great hidden danger to the stability and security of the power grid because wind power has no ability for frequency regulation. When doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines use rotor kinetic energy to participate in frequency regulation, it can effectively respond to frequency fluctuation, but has the problems of secondary frequency drop and output power loss. Furthermore, it cannot provide long-term power support. To solve these problems, a coordinated frequency control strategy based on rotor kinetic energy and supercapacitor was proposed in this paper. In order to ensure the DFIG provides fast and long-term power support, a supercapacitor was used to realize the droop characteristic, and rotor kinetic energy was used to realize the inertia characteristic like synchronous generator (SG). Additionally, the supercapacitor is also controlled to compensate for the pow... [more]
Experimental Evaluation of a New Approach for a Two-Stage Hydrothermal Biomass Liquefaction Process

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneously catalyzed reaction, hydrogen donor, hydrothermal process, liquefaction, transfer hydrogenation, wet biomass
A new approach for biomass liquefaction was developed and evaluated in a joint research project. Focus of the project, called FEBio@H2O, lies on a two-step hydrothermal conversion. Within step 1, the input biomass is converted employing a hydrothermal degradation without added catalyst or by homogeneous catalysis. Within step 2, the hydrogen accepting products of step 1, e.g., levulinic acid (LA) are upgraded by a heterogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation with hydrogen donor substances, e.g., formic acid (FA). As a result, components with an even lower oxygen content in comparison to step 1 products are formed; as an example, γ-valerolactone (GVL) can be named. Therefore, the products are more stable and contained less oxygen as requested for a possible application as liquid fuel. As a hydrothermal process, FEBio@H2O is especially suitable for highly water-containing feedstock. The evaluation involves hydrothermal conversion tests with model substances, degradation of real biomasses, tra... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: fs-QCA, local energy transition, qualitative analysis, solar PV, South Korean energy policy
To explore the most desirable pathway for a successful local energy transition, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis was conducted on 16 regional cases in South Korea. We developed four propositions based on previous studies and theories as a causal set. Based on the South Korean context, we selected the solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and solar PV expansion rate as barometers for measuring the success of a local energy transition. Our analysis highlights the importance of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) membership (network), local legislation, and the environmental surveillance of locally-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The implications of this study will provide insights for developing or newly industrialized countries where an energy transition is underway.

Keywords: decision making, energy and economy transition, international energy security risk index, multicollinearity test, multicollinearity test with variance inflation factors, multiple regression analysis
The world economy and society are in a complex process of transition characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. Therefore, further development and management of the transition will largely depend on the quality of the decisions made and, accordingly, on the decision-making process itself. The main goal of this study is to analyze the reliability of International Energy Security Risk Index as a tool to support the process of energy and economy transition decision making, as closely related and highly interdependent phenomena. The index is composed of 29 aggregated variables (grouped into eight categories), and the research is conducted on a research sample of 25 countries over a period of 36 years. The reliability assessment is performed by using Multiple Regression Analysis. Multicollinearity test, plus Multicollinearity test with Variance Inflation Factors, is used for methodological verification. The test results indicate a high degree of unreliability of the Index, as is conclud... [more]
Modeling and Stability Analysis of Weak-Grid Tied Multi-DFIGs in DC-Link Voltage Control Timescale
Dong Wang, Houquan Chen, Yunhui Huang, Xiangtian Deng, Guorong Zhu
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-link voltage control timescale, DFIG, eigenvalue analysis, PLL, weak grid
The DC-link voltage control (DVC) timescale (i.e., the frequency dynamics covering converter outer controls) instabilities in wind generation have gained increased attention recently. This paper presents DVC timescale modeling and stability analysis for multi doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) connected to weak AC grids. A reduced-order, small-signal model of a grid-tied multi-DFIG system, designed for DVC dynamics analysis, is firstly proposed. The model allows for the dynamic interactions among the DC-link voltage control, active power control (APC), terminal voltage control (TVC) and phase-locked loop (PLL). Eigenvalue and participation factor analyses are conducted to explore the potential instabilities and correlated critical factors for such a multi-machine system. The sensitivity studies find that instability can occur at high levels of power generations or low short-circuit ratio (SCR) conditions. In addition, the dominant mode is identified to be highly related to the PLL... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asynchronous motor, bearings, classification, continuous wavelet transform, convolutional neural networks, deep networks, frequency converter, short circuit, vibration signals
In this article, a type of diagnostic tool for an asynchronous motor powered from a frequency converter is proposed. An all-purpose, effective, and simple method for asynchronous motor monitoring is used. This method includes a single vibration measuring device fixed on the motor’s housing to detect faults such as worn-out or broken bearings, shaft misalignment, defective motor support, lost phase to the stator, and short circuit in one of the phase windings in the stator. The gathered vibration data are then standardized and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is applied for feature extraction. Using morl wavelets, the algorithm is applied to all the datasets in the research and resulting scalograms are then fed to a complex deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Training and testing are done using separate datasets. The resulting model could successfully classify all the defects at an excellent rate and even separate mechanical faults from electrical ones. The best performing model... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: copper catalyst, CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3, dimethoxymethane, fuel cell, hydrogen production, oxidative steam reforming, partial oxidation
The catalytic properties of CuO-CeO2 supported on alumina for the oxidative steam reforming (OSR) of dimethoxymethane (DMM) to hydrogen-rich gas in a tubular fixed bed reactor were studied. The CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst provided complete DMM conversion and hydrogen productivity > 10 L h−1 gcat−1 at 280 °C, GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) = 15,000 h−1 and DMM:O2:H2O:N2 = 10:2.5:40:47.5 vol.%. Comparative studies showed that DMM OSR exceeded DMM steam reforming (SR) and DMM partial oxidation (PO) in terms of hydrogen productivity. Thus, the outcomes of lab-scale catalytic experiments show high promise of DMM oxidative steam reforming to produce hydrogen-rich gas for fuel cell feeding.

Keywords: artificial neural networks, drilling operation, machine learning classifiers, RBF Kernel function, sensitivity analysis, stuck pipe, support vector machines
Stuck pipe incidents are one of the contributors to non-productive time (NPT), where they can result in a higher well cost. This research investigates the feasibility of applying machine learning to predict events of stuck pipes during drilling operations in petroleum fields. The predictive model aims to predict the occurrence of stuck pipes so that relevant drilling operation personnel are warned to enact a mitigation plan to prevent stuck pipes. Two machine learning methodologies were studied in this research, namely, the artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM). A total of 268 data sets were successfully collected through data extraction for the well drilling operation. The data also consist of the parameters with which the stuck pipes occurred during the drilling operations. These drilling parameters include information such as the properties of the drilling fluid, bottom-hole assembly (BHA) specification, state of the bore-hole and operating conditions. The... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascading failure, extreme events, power transmission system, vulnerability assessment
The analysis of the fault propagation path of transmission lines and the method of identification of vulnerable lines during typhoon weather conditions is of great significance. In this context, this paper introduces the failure probability model of transmission lines under such conditions by considering both wind speed and the load of the lines. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and the DC model based on OPA are applied to simulate the failure of transmission lines. The cascading failure state transition diagram (CFSTD) is proposed based on the failure chains and the criticality ranking of nodes in CFSTD by the average weight coefficient (AWC) for identifying vulnerable lines of the power grid under such conditions. A new weight in CFSTD is proposed to describe the vulnerability of each line and a new resilience index is used to assess the impacts of a typhoon on the system. The proposed method is demonstrated by using the modified IEEE 118-bus test system. Results show that the method... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial neural networks, building energy optimization, building integrated photovoltaics, electrical energy storage, Genetic Algorithm, linear programming, nearly zero energy buildings
Reducing the primary energy consumption in buildings and simultaneously increasing self-consumption from renewable energy sources in nearly-zero-energy buildings, as per the 2010/31/EU directive, is crucial nowadays. This work solved the problem of nearly zeroing the net grid electrical energy in buildings in real time. This target was achieved using linear programming (LP)—a convex optimization technique leading to global solutions—to optimally decide the daily charging or discharging (dispatch) of the energy storage in an adaptive manner, in real time, and hence control and minimize both the import and export grid energies. LP was assisted by equally powerful methods, such as artificial neural networks (ANN) for forecasting the building’s load demand and photovoltaic (PV) on a 24 hour basis, and genetic algorithm (GA)—a heuristic optimization technique—for driving the optimum dispatch. Moreover, to address the non-linear nature of the battery and model the energy dispatch in a more r... [more]

Stochastic NPV Based vs Stochastic LCOE Based Power Portfolio Selection Under Uncertainty
Carlo Mari
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficient frontiers, power portfolio selection, risk measures, stochastic Levelized Cost of Electricity, stochastic Net Present Value
This paper investigates the problem of power portfolio selection under uncertainty using two different metrics, namely the stochastic Net Present Value (NPV) and the stochastic Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). In the first metric, stochastic revenues, as well as stochastic costs incurred during the whole lifetime of power plants, are taken into account. The second metric is based on stochastic costs only. This means that revenues deriving from selling electricity in power markets over long-term horizons play an important role in determining optimal portfolios under the stochastic NPV metric, but they have no impact on optimal portfolios under the stochastic LCOE metric. Uncertainty arising from unpredictable movements of electricity market prices, fossil fuels, and nuclear fuel prices is considered. Moreover, stochastic CO 2 costs are included into the analysis. The aim of this study was to examine in what circumstances efficient NPV-based portfolios differ in a significan... [more]

Keywords: behavior change, behavioral reference group, household energy consumption, normative feedback, smart meter
Within residences, normative messaging interventions have been gaining interest as a cost-effective way to promote energy-saving behaviors. Behavioral reference groups are one important factor in determining the effectiveness of normative messages. More personally relevant and meaningful groups are likely to promote behavior change. Using readily available energy-use profiles in a non-invasive manner permits the creation of highly personalized reference groups. Unfortunately, how data granularity (e.g., minute and hour) and aggregation (e.g., one week and one month) affect the performance of energy profile-based reference group categorization is not well understood. This research evaluates reference group categorization performance across different levels of data granularity and aggregation. We conduct a clustering analysis using one-year of energy use data from 2248 households in Holland, Michigan USA. The clustering analysis reveals that using six-hour intervals results in more perso... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dc/dc power conversion, inverters, microprocessor applications, power control, solar power generation
In many solar inverters, a dc/dc converter is mainly located between the solar arrays and the inverter. This study presents an enhanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for photovoltaic (PV) systems that drives solar array voltages to track a reference value and decreases fluctuations and oscillations in PV voltage. Different from the previously presented methods, a novel MPPT method is proposed that ensures tracking accuracy by considering output voltage in addition to input voltage and currents. The proposed method detects d I / d V variations, compares the output voltage with the desired reference to shift operation mode and refreshes step size. The digital filtering, enhanced PI, and perturb-and-observe (P&O) tracking features of the proposed MPPT method make it robust to mitigate source fluctuations and sensitivity to partial shading based oscillations. In order to validate the success of the proposed method, a test rig has been installed with dual boost conve... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy recovery, modelling techniques, throttling valves, turboexpander
Sustainable development can no longer neglect the growth of those technologies that look at the recovery of any energy waste in industrial processes. For example, in almost every industrial plant it happens that pressure energy is wasted in throttling devices for pressure and flow control needs. Clearly, the recovery of this wasted energy can be considered as an opportunity to reach not only a higher plant energy efficiency, but also the reduction of the plant Operating Expenditures (OpEx). In recent years, it is getting common to replace throttling valves with turbine-based systems (tuboexpander) thus getting both the pressure control and the energy recovery, for instance, producing electricity. However, the wide range of possible operating conditions, technical requirements and design constrains determine highly customized constructions of these turboexpanders. Furthermore, manufacturers are interested in tools enabling them to rapidly get the design of their products. For these reas... [more]
Looking for an Offshore Low-Level Jet Champion among Recent Reanalyses: A Tight Race over the Baltic Sea

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Baltic Sea, ERA5, low-level jets, MERRA2, NEWA, offshore wind energy, UERRA
With an increasing interest in offshore wind energy, focus has been directed towards large semi-enclosed basins such as the Baltic Sea as potential sites to set up wind turbines. The meteorology of this inland sea in particular is strongly affected by the surrounding land, creating mesoscale conditions that are important to take into consideration when planning for new wind farms. This paper presents a comparison between data from four state-of-the-art reanalyses (MERRA2, ERA5, UERRA, NEWA) and observations from LiDAR. The comparison is made for four sites in the Baltic Sea with wind profiles up to 300 m. The findings provide insight into the accuracy of reanalyses for wind resource assessment. In general, the reanalyses underestimate the average wind speed. The average shear is too low in NEWA, while ERA5 and UERRA predominantly overestimate the shear. MERRA2 suffers from insufficient vertical resolution, which limits its usefulness in evaluating the wind profile. It is also shown tha... [more]

Keywords: emission index, fuel cost, golden ratio optimization method, IEEE 30-bus system, optimal power flow, power loss, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
An optimal operation system is a potential solution to increase the energy efficiency of a power network equipped with stochastic Renewable Energy Sources (RES). In this article, an Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem has been formulated as a single and multi-objective problems for a conventional power generation and renewable sources connected to a power network. The objective functions reflect the minimization of fuel cost, gas emission, power loss, voltage deviation and improving the system stability. Considering the volatile renewable generation behaviour and uncertainty in the power prediction of wind and solar power output as a nonlinear optimization problem, this paper uses a Weibull and lognormal probability distribution functions to estimate the power output of renewable generation. Then, a new Golden Ratio Optimization Method (GROM) algorithm has been developed to solve the OPF problem for a power network incorporating with stochastic RES. The proposed GROM algorithm aims to imp... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: digital signal processor, field-excited flux-switching motor, high-frequency injection, predictive controller
Field-excited flux-switching motor drive systems have become more and more popular due to their robustness and lack of need for a permanent magnet. Three different types of predictive controllers, including a single-step predictive speed controller, a multi-step predictive speed controller, and a predictive current controller are proposed for sensorless flux-switching motor drive systems in this paper. By using a 1 kHz high-frequency sinusoidal voltage injected into the field winding and by measuring the a-b-c armature currents in the stator, an estimated rotor position that is near ± 2 electrical degrees is developed. To improve the dynamic responses of the field-excited flux-switching motor drive system, predictive controllers are employed. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed predictive controllers have better performance than PI controllers, including transient, load disturbance, and tracking responses. In addition, the adjustable speed range of the proposed drive s... [more]

Keywords: decentralized control, emergency control, microgrid, power systems stability, recloser, small hydropower plants, synchronous coupler
Small-scale power generation based on renewable energy sources is gaining popularity in distribution grids, creating new challenges for power system control. At the same time, remote consumers with their own small-scale generation still have low reliability of power supply and poor power quality, due to the lack of proper technology for grid control when the main power supply is lost. Today, there is a global trend in the transition from a power supply with centralized control to a decentralized one, which has led to the Microgrid concept. A microgrid is an intelligent automated system that can reconfigure by itself, maintain the power balance, and distribute power flows. The main purpose of this paper is to study the method of control using reclosers in the Lahsh district of the Rasht grid in Tajikistan with distributed small generation. Based on modified reclosers, a method of decentralized synchronization and restoration of the grid normal operation after the loss of the main power... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon abatement, climate change, climate policy, greenhouse gas emissions, Paris Climate Agreement, sub-national agreements
Although national commitments to the Paris Climate Accord have waned, carbon mitigation by sub-national entities is on the rise globally. We examine the effectiveness of sub-national jurisdictions (e.g., states, provinces, cities) in collectively enacting greenhouse gas abatement strategies. We develop a simple model to explore the conditions under which an agreement among sub-national jurisdictions within a country may lead to substantial carbon abatement relative to a national policy determined through majority rule. We find that, in the absence of a functional national policy response, a coordinated sub-national agreement can generate meaningful abatement. This could form an important stopgap measure in the absence of better alternatives.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, conditioning, model, molten salts, Syngas
Raw syngas conditioning using molten salts was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of the reaction conditions, including temperature, gas velocity, bubble diameter, molten salt static liquid heights, and inlet gas composition, on the composition of the syngas product and the properties of the spent molten salts were investigated. The molten salt absorbed CO2 in all of the experiments (at temperatures from 350 °C to 500 °C) and decreased its concentration down to 1%. The H2/CO increased from 0.94 to a maximum of 11.0, which may meet most of the synthetic process’ requirements. The temperature, gas velocity, and molten salt static liquid heights had significant effects on the H2 and CO concentrations in the gas product. Molten salt raw syngas conditioning can be a suitable follow-up procedure for gasification and pyrolysis.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: economics, electricity, employment, Energy, market, policy, turbine, Wind
This paper provides a structured literature review of the negative economic effects associated with the development of wind energy and synthesized the evidence at an abstract level. We then developed an analytical framework to systematically review economic issues such as volatility, electricity price, housing values, and unemployment in relation to wind energy. Global wind energy development data from the time period from 2000 through 2019 were included for a more robust analysis. This period encompasses the vast majority of total global installed wind energy capacity. After amalgamating evidence from existing studies and data banks, we discuss the policy implications, suggest avenues for future research, and propose solutions to mitigate externalities. By understanding the negative economic impact created by the expansion of wind energy, we can better equip policy makers and developers to create more efficient and sustainable energy policy to benefit citizens and preserve the environ...
