On the Wind Energy Resource above High-Rise Buildings
Giulio Vita, Anina Šarkić-Glumac, Hassan Hemida, Simone Salvadori, Charalampos Baniotopoulos
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building aerodynamics, turbulent flows, urban wind energy, wind tunnel
One of the main challenges of urban wind energy harvesting is the understanding of the flow characteristics where urban wind turbines are to be installed. Among viable locations within the urban environment, high-rise buildings are particularly promising due to the elevated height and relatively undisturbed wind conditions. Most research studies on high-rise buildings deal with the calculation of the wind loads in terms of surface pressure. In the present paper, flow pattern characteristics are investigated for a typical high-rise building in a variety of configurations and wind directions in wind tunnel tests. The aim is to improve the understanding of the wind energy resource in the built environment and give designers meaningful data on the positioning strategy of wind turbines to improve performance. In addition, the study provides suitable and realistic turbulence characteristics to be reproduced in physical or numerical simulations of urban wind turbines for several locations abo... [more]
Influence Analysis and Stepwise Regression of Coal Mechanical Parameters on Uniaxial Compressive Strength Based on Orthogonal Testing Method
Peipeng Zhang, Jianpeng Wang, Lishuai Jiang, Tao Zhou, Xianyang Yan, Long Yuan, Wentao Chen
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: main controlling parameters, orthogonal experiment, peak strain, stepwise regression prediction, uniaxial compressive strength
Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and peak strain (PS) are essential indices for studying the mechanical properties of coal and rock masses, and they are closely related to mechanical parameters such as the elastic modulus (E), Poisson’s ratio (υ), cohesion (C) and internal friction angle (Φ) of coal and rock masses. This study took the No. 2-1 coal seam of Zhaogu No. 2 Mine, in Henan Province, China, as the research object. An RMT-150B servo testing machine was used to test all mechanical parameters, including the E, υ, C and Φ of coal and rock masses. Based on the principle of orthogonal testing, Three Dimensions Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC3D) was used to select E, υ, C, Φ, tensile strength (Rm) and dilation angle (Ψ) as initial participation factors. Using these six parameters and a five-level combination scheme (L25 (56)), the influence of coal mechanical parameters on UCS and PS was investigated, using the software SPSS for stepwise regression analysis, and a unia... Comparative Analysis of Ground-Mounted vs. Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems Optimized for Interrow Distance between Parallel Arrays
Ahmed Bilal Awan, Mohammed Alghassab, Muhammad Zubair, Abdul Rauf Bhatti, Muhammad Uzair, Ghulam Abbas
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy yield, ground-mounted PV, LCoE, mutual shading, rooftop PV
The aim of this research is to perform an in-depth performance comparison of ground-mounted and rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems. The PV modules are tilted to receive maximum solar irradiance. The efficiency of the PV system decreases due to the mutual shading impact of parallel tilted PV modules. The mutual shading decreases with the increasing interrow distance of parallel PV modules, but a distance that is too large causes an increase in land cost in the case of ground-mounted configuration and a decrease in roof surface shading in the case of rooftop configuration, because larger sections of roof are exposed to sun radiation. Therefore, an optimized interrow distance for the two PV configurations is determined with the aim being to minimize the levelized cost of energy (LCoE) and maximize the energy yield. The model of the building is simulated in EnergyPlus software to determine the cooling load requirement and roof surface temperatures under different shading scenarios. The layo... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: enzymatic hydrolysis, furfural, HMF, inhibition, phenolics, steam explosion pretreatment
Biomass pretreatment is a mandatory step for the biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to chemicals. During pretreatment, soluble compounds are released into the prehydrolyzate that inhibit the enzymatic hydrolysis step. In this work, we investigated how the reaction conditions in steam explosion pretreatment of beechwood (severity: 3.0−5.25; temperature: 160−230 °C) influence the resulting amounts of different inhibitors. Furthermore, we quantified the extent of enzyme inhibition during enzymatic hydrolysis of Avicel in the presence of the prehydrolyzates. The amounts of phenolics, HMF, acetic acid and formic acid increased with increasing pretreatment severities and maximal quantities of 21.6, 8.3, 43.7 and 10.9 mg/gbeechwood, respectively, were measured at the highest severity. In contrast, the furfural concentration peaked at a temperature of 200 °C and a severity of 4.75. The presence of the prehydrolyzates in enzymatic hydrolysis of Avicel lowered the glucose yields by 5−26%.... [more]
Investigation on the Characteristics of Biodiesel Droplets in the Engine Cylinder
Ali Raza, Hassan Mehboob, Sajjad Miran, Waseem Arif, Syed Farukh Javaid Rizvi
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, droplet size, fuel evaporation, numerical analysis, turbulence effect
The world is moving towards renewable energy sources rapidly and, at present, fossil fuels are reducing day by day. In this scenario, biofuels have become an attractive alternative to conventional diesel fuels. In the present work, the vaporization of Thumba biodiesel is numerically modeled using the finite volume-based approach in ANSYS Fluent and the results are compared with diesel fuel. Evaporation of fuels is governed by the conservation equations of energy, momentum, and mass. Owing to high temperature and pressure conditions, turbulence is present in the engine cylinder. To account for the turbulence effects, the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) turbulence model is used. Heat transfer to droplet and mass lost by the droplets is governed by the discrete phase model equations. The obtained results include the droplet lifetime, increase in temperature of a droplet, and velocity profiles. It is observed that the size and temperature of fuel droplets and ambient temperature hav... [more]
An Energy Preservation Index for Evaluating the Rockburst Potential Based on Energy Evolution
Lin Gao, Feng Gao, Yan Xing, Zhizhen Zhang
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyclic loading–unloading test, energy evolution, energy preservation index, rockburst potential
The estimation of rockburst potential has attracted great attention in the field of rock mechanics and engineering. In this study, an original energy preservation index is proposed to evaluate the rockburst potential in view of the energy evolution characteristics of rock materials. To investigate the energy evolution during rock deformation and failure, a number of cyclic uniaxial compression experiments on five kinds of rocks were carried out. The results showed that the curves of energy evolution exhibited obvious stages and there were significantly different weakening degrees for different rock materials embodied by the decreasing degrees of the ratios of elastic strain energy to dissipated strain energy at the weakening stage. Then, the energy preservation index was further formulated based on the decreasing ratio. Furthermore, by analyzing the acoustic emission activities at the failure stage and failure modes of the five rock materials, the rockburst potential was analyzed accor... [more]
Effect of Loudspeakers on the In Situ Electric Field in a Driver Body Model Exposed to an Electric Vehicle Wireless Power Transfer System
Junqing Lan, Akimasa Hirata
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electric vehicles, loudspeaker, numerical dosimetry, wireless power transfer
This study computationally evaluates the effect of loudspeakers on the in situ electric field in a driver body model exposed to the magnetic field from a wireless power transfer (WPT) system in an electric vehicle (EV), one with a body made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the other made with aluminum. A quasi-static two-step approach was applied to compute the in situ electric field. The computational results showed that the magnetic field distribution generated by the WPT is significantly altered around the loudspeakers, and shows obvious discontinuity and local enhancement. The maximum spatial-average magnetic field strength in the driver’s body was increased by 11% in the CFRP vehicle. It was 2.25 times larger than the reference levels (RL) prescribed in the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines in 2010. In addition, we found that the in situ electric field computed by the line- and volume-averaging methods were stable if the... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, energy scenarios, EUROfusion TIMES model, nuclear fusion, road transport
The European Roadmap towards the production of electricity from nuclear fusion foresees the potential availability of nuclear fusion power plants (NFPPs) in the second half of this century. The possible penetration of that technology, typically addressed by using the global energy system EUROFusion TIMES Model (ETM), will depend, among other aspects, on its costs compared to those of the other available technologies for electricity production, and on the future electricity demand. This paper focuses on the ongoing electrification process of the transport sector, with special attention devoted to road transport. A survey on the present and forthcoming technologies, as foreseen by several manufacturers and other models, and an international vehicle database are taken into account to develop the new road transport module, then implemented and harmonized inside ETM. Following three different storylines, the computed results are presented in terms of the evolution of the road transport dema... [more]
Damage Monitoring of a Catenary Moored Spar Platform for Renewable Energy Devices
Deirdre O’Donnell, Jimmy Murphy, Vikram Pakrashi
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damage, mooring, ocean wave basin, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, spar platform, structural health monitoring, uncertainty
Structural performance of renewable energy device platforms is central to their power generation in a reliable and competitive manner. However, there is a gap in research in the conceptual and experimental stages of such devices at lower technological readiness levels in terms of understanding of their structural responses. Uncertainties around knowledge related to damage conditions of such structures are under-researched and experimental investigations into the monitoring of performance of such structures are significantly needed. This research addresses this need and investigates various damage conditions in a scaled catenary moored spar platform in an ocean wave basin, exposed to typical wave conditions for the west coast of Ireland. A comparison of the monitored structural responses was carried out with respect to the undamaged experimental model. It was observed that while free decay tests were not useful to distinguish between various damage levels, a characterisation of the dist... [more]

Jarosław Piątkowski, Bożena Gajdzik, Aleksander Mesjasz
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: material durability, statistical prognostic models, steam pipelines
The paper presents a research method concerning the application of statistical prognostic models for assessment of material durability and operational reliability of steel for steam pipelines, whose operation has exceeded the working time of 100,000 h. Decisions on the admission of long-lived materials to work for power industry results from extensive diagnostic examinations are based on the results of tests of mechanical properties, microstructure degradation, and corrosion processes. Considering the economic reasons and available data published in diagnostic reports, the determination of failure-free operating time of steam pipelines is based on the results of static tensile tests—tensile strength (Rm); conventional yield point (Rp); elongation (A) and Vickers hardness (V), correlated with the operating time and the media type (fresh steam and secondarily super-heated steam) for the most sensitive element of a pipeline, namely the elbow. The results of changes in strength properties... [more]

Yanwei Liu, Zhenye Li, Yuzhong Chen, Kegang Zhao
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: articulated vehicle, drop-and-pull transportation, energy management strategy, Fuel Cells
Drop-and-pull transportation can repeatedly utilize tractors with different trailers and reduce costs, carbon emissions, and the number of tractors to purchase and use. Fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) possess high power and long drive endurance. These performance characteristics complement the performance requirements of drop-and-pull transportation of heavy loads and long mileage. This paper proposes a novel fuel-cell electric articulated vehicle featuring three power sources: fuel cell, power battery, and ultracapacitor. Then, based on the proposed vehicle, we expound on a highly efficient and flexible transport system. To compare economics and durability of fuel-cell electric trailers with two energy sources (i.e., fuel-cell-battery) and three energy sources, we developed and simulated a rule-based energy management strategy under driving conditions. The results indicate that, although similar levels of fuel economy and capacity degradation of the fuel cell occur for the proposed... [more]

Ngo Minh Khoa, Le Van Dai
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision tree, disturbance detection and classification, Gaussian window, IEEE 13-bus system, power quality, Stockwell transform
The detection, mitigation, and classification of power quality (PQ) disturbances have been issues of interest in the power system field. This paper proposes an approach to detect and classify various types of PQ disturbances based on the Stockwell transform (ST) and decision tree (DT) methods. At first, the ST is developed based on the moving, localizing, and scalable Gaussian window to detect five statistical features of PQ disturbances such as the high frequency of oscillatory transient, distinction between stationary and non-stationary, the voltage amplitude oscillation around an average value, the existence of harmonics in a disturbance signal, and the root mean square voltage at the internal period of sag, swell or interruption. Then, these features are classified into nine types, such as normal, sag, swell, interruption, harmonic, flicker, oscillatory transient, harmonic voltage sag, and harmonic voltage swell by using the DT algorithm that is based on a set of rules with the str... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: acetogenesis, key microbiomes, processed organic wastes (PWs), resource recovery, waste activated sludge (WAS)
Aimed at the low ratio of carbon and nitrogen (C/N, approximately 7/1) of waste activated sludge (WAS), which would inhibit the acetogenesis process during anaerobic fermentation, this study introduced three brewing wastes, including vinegar (VR), stillage (SR) and soy sauce (SSR) residues, to promote acetogenesis by co-fermenting with WAS. Results showed that different brewing wastes contributed differently to the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) yield. The best performance was observed with SSR (4517 ± 367 mg COD/L), particularly rich in C2−C3 VFAs, corresponding to 40% and 52% higher concentrations than with SR and VR, respectively. Meanwhile, the hydrolysis rate constant peaked at 0.0059 h−1 in the SSR test, compared to the sole WAS test (0.0018 h−1). Furthermore, canonical correlation analysis reflected that the functional consortia, known to ferment saccharides/amino acids into C2−C3 VFAs (i.e., Proteiniclasticum, Petrimonas, Cloacibacillus and Gemmobacter), was related to the charact... For the next few years, Italian legislation foresees increasing percentages of energy production from renewable sources, including historical buildings. The opportunities and constraints analysed are presented through a specific approach, typical of building processes for innovative technological BIPV solutions on historical buildings.
Biogas Production in the Russian Federation: Current Status, Potential, and Barriers
Tatiana Nevzorova
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: barrier identification, biogas, biomethane, renewable energy policy, Russia
Russia has signed the Paris Agreement and recently approved its ratification. However, the Russian Government does not consider abandoning the production and use of hydrocarbons to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To meet the goals of the Agreement, Russia must find new innovative solutions. This study demonstrates that biogas is one of the most necessary renewable sources in Russia. Despite this, the deployment of biogas technologies is currently extremely slow. In this regard, to assess their subsequent impact on the Russian energy sector as a whole, it is important to identify the factors that hinder the wider implementation of biogas technologies. Based on the findings, the most critical barriers were identified and discussed in detail. In the light of the results, some policy-related recommendations are also proposed.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregators, local electricity markets, smart distribution systems, Stackelberg game, transactive energy
Recently, with the penetration of numerous Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in Smart Distribution Networks (SDN), Local Transactive Markets have emerged. Exchanging energy between all participants of local markets results in the satisfaction of producers and consumers. Based on these issues, this study provides a novel framework for the participation of SDN-independent entities in wholesale and local electricity markets simultaneously. In this regard, the considered system’s players, namely Distribution System Operator (DSO) and DER Aggregator (AG), take part within local as well as wholesale markets in two-day ahead and real-time stages. Moreover, to deal with the inherent conflict between the existing players’ interests, a Stackelberg game-based technique is proposed. In the raised competition, the leader, DSO, attempts to minimize its operating costs, while the follower, DER AG, tends to maximize its profit. Therefore, actors’ actions choices within both markets are made non-coope... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization and wind power, pitch angle, proportional–integral–derivative, wind turbine
The production of maximum wind energy requires controlling various parts of medium to large-scale wind turbines (WTs). This paper presents a robust pitch angle control system for the rated wind turbine power at a wide range of simulated wind speeds by means of a proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. In addition, ant colony optimization (ACO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and classical Ziegler−Nichols (Z-N) algorithms have been used for tuning the PID controller parameters to obtain within rated stable output power of WTs from fluctuating wind speeds. The proposed system is simulated under fast wind speed variation, and its results are compared with those of the PID-ZN controller and PID-PSO to verify its effeteness. The proposed approach contains several benefits including simple implementation, as well as tolerance of turbine parameters and several nonparametric uncertainties. Robust control of the generator output power with wind-speed variations can also be consid... [more]
The Latest Method for Surface Tension Determination: Experimental Validation
Tomasz Janusz Teleszewski, Andrzej Gajewski
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boiling, heat or mass transfer, surface tension, Young–Laplace equation
The highest effectiveness of heat exchange is under boiling; hence, surface tension is an important parameter and should be determined when new liquid substances are created. The most popular methods are based on numerically solving the Young−Laplace equation by applying the Bashforth and Adams algorithm, which fails at the poles and at the inflection points. The newest algorithm is based on the closed-form expressions that define a drop or bubble. It gives the accurate solutions for the fully created drops or bubbles. To validate it, the surface tension value is determined for the air bubbles in water and compared with the reference data. Because the relative discrepancies are extremely small, the new method may be thought of as positively validated.
Improved Analysis on the Fin Reliability of a Plate Fin Heat Exchanger for Usage in LNG Applications

Subject: Materials
Keywords: factor of safety, mechanical properties, plate fin heat exchanger, stresses, structural stability, symmetric design structure, symmetrical heating plates
A plate fin heat exchanger (PFHE) is a critical part of the cryogenic industry. A plate fin heat exchanger has many applications, but it is commonly used in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry for the gasification/liquefaction process. During this gasification to the liquefaction process, there is a large temperature gradient. Due to this large temperature gradient, stresses are produced that directly influence the braze joint of PFHE. Significant work has been carried out on heat transfer and the flow enhancement of PFHE; however, little attention has been paid to structural stability and stresses produced in these brazed joints. Due to these stresses, leakages in PFHE are observed, mostly in braze joints. In the current study, standard fin design is analyzed. In addition, the structural stability of brazed joints under standard conditions is also tested. Two techniques are used here to analyze fins, using the finite element method (FEM), first by examining the whole fin brazed j... [more]
Analysis of Torque Ripples of an Induction Motor Taking into Account a Inter-Turn Short-Circuit in a Stator Winding
Wojciech Pietrowski, Konrad Górny
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element method, Fourier transform, induction machine, inter-turn short-circuits, torque waveforms
Despite the increasing popularity of permanent magnet synchronous machines, induction motors (IM) are still the most frequently used electrical machines in commercial applications. Ensuring a failure-free operation of IM motivates research aimed at the development of effective methods of monitoring and diagnostic of electrical machines. The presented paper deals with diagnostics of an IM with failure of an inter-turn short-circuit in a stator winding. As this type of failure commonly does not lead immediately to exclusion of a drive system, an early stage diagnosis of inter-turn short-circuit enables preventive maintenance and reduce the costs of a whole drive system failure. In the proposed approach, the early diagnostics of IM with the inter-turn short-circuit is based on the analysis of an electromagnetic torque waveform. The research is based on an elaborated numerical field−circuit model of IM. In the presented model, the inter-turn short-circuit in the selected winding has been a... [more]
Effect of Air-Ducted Blade Design on Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Performance
Cemil Yigit
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade design, Computational Fluid Dynamics, horizontal axis wind turbine, power coefficient, response surface optimization
Wind turbines without pitch control are more preferable from economical point of view but aerodynamic stall affects them more and after a critical wind speed local boundary layer separation occurs. Consequently, their power production is relatively low. In this study, air ducts added on the blade and using the airflow from them the kinetic energy of the low-momentum fluid behind the surface was increased and delay of separation of the boundary layer from the surface was examined The Response Surface Optimization method was utilized in order to get the best possible design under the constraints and targets arranged for the parameters termed the diameter, slope, number and angle of attack of the air ducts. By using computational fluid dynamics analysis, optimum parameter values were obtained and air-ducted and air-duct free blade designs were compared. An improvement in power coefficient between 3.4−4.4% depending on wind speed was achieved with the new design. Due to increase in viscous... [more]
Designing Control Strategies of Aeration System in Biological WWTP
Robert Piotrowski, Tomasz Ujazdowski
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy control system, nonlinear control system, SBR, wastewater treatment plant
The paper presents the complete design processes of novel aeration control systems in the SBR (sequencing batch reactor) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Due to large energy expense and a high influence on biological processes, the aeration system plays a key role in WWTP operation. The paper considers the aeration system for a biological WWTP located in the northeast of Poland. This system consists of blowers, the main collector pipeline, three aeration lines with different diameters and lengths, and diffusers. Classical control systems applied for this type of installation are based on PID (proportional−integral−derivative) controllers, the settings of which are often found experimentally. The article presents the optimization of these settings and the design of an alternative control algorithm—the fuzzy controller.
Energy Performance Contracting and Public-Private Partnership: How to Share Risks and Balance Benefits
Laura Martiniello, Donato Morea, Francesco Paolone, Riccardo Tiscini
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accounting treatment, energy performance contracts, performance monitoring technologies, public private partnership, risks
Public private partnerships (PPPs) are a well-known instrument used worldwide by public administration (PA) to build public infrastructure using private knowhow and financial resources, and sharing risks. In recent years, PPPs have been widely adopted to develop energy efficiency projects between public and private sectors. In this context, a successful project requires a contractual arrangement based on energy performance contracting (EPC) that balances the interests of the two parties. This paper aims to answer two questions: how to share the benefits between the contractual parties and reach an optimal long-term contractual agreement; and which type of contract ensures a consistent risk transfer to the private partner, allowing the PA an “off balance” accounting treatment. The research questions are answered through the development of a mathematical equation able to calculate the optimal percentage of benefits sharing between partners in a long-term contractual agreement. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrator photovoltaic, CPV/TEG hybrid system, PV/T hybrid system, thermoelectric generator
In order to maximize the output of concentrator Photovoltaic cells and maintain their efficiencies, the operating temperature of concentrator photovoltaic cells must be reduced. A way that could reduce such photovoltaic temperature is by thermally attaching them on top of a thermoelectric generator. A thermoelectric generator in such coupling will act as a low-cost passive-cooling subsystem, as well as a power generator for producing additional energy from the rejected photovoltaic heat. Increasing the area of the proposed photovoltaic cells relative to the thermoelectric generator’s hot-side area will result in an increase in the thermoelectric generator’s electrical output, but may also result in overheating the photovoltaic cells, hence reducing their performance. Optimization has to be performed for the photovoltaic covering percentage relative to the hot-side area in order to maximize the output of the whole coupled system. This work investigates the electrical and thermal perform... [more]
Consumers’ Perceptions of the Supply of Tap Water in Crisis Situations
Katarzyna Pietrucha-Urbanik, Janusz R. Rak
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer safety, crisis situations, water supply
This paper first presents the results of polling on the subject of potable water in crisis situations, with respondents from south-eastern Poland’s Subcarpathian region asked for their opinions on the level of nuisance associated with water supply interruptions and water quality, levels of consumption and water companies’ quality of service. Among the respondents 53% regard the quality of the water they receive as satisfactory, while a quarter see it as only average. However, respondents are relatively satisfied with the corporate response when supplies are interrupted, as methods and means of notification are judged effective by 60%. Continuing with work to assess possibilities for water companies to improve their performance in crisis situations, the present study generates an Analytical Hierarchy Process allowing recipients to determine importance criteria where quality of service is concerned. This could facilitate management by water companies, providing for centralised control an... [more]
