Keywords: demand response, microgrid, MILP, minimum cost, optimal sizing, renewable energy power system, RTP, sea water electrolysis plant
Optimal sizing of power systems has a tremendous effective role in reducing the total system cost by preventing unneeded investment in installing unnecessary generating units. This paper presents an optimal sizing and planning strategy for a completely hybrid renewable energy power system in a remote Japanese island, which is composed of photovoltaic (PV), wind generators (WG), battery energy storage system (BESS), fuel cell (FC), seawater electrolysis plant, and hydrogen tank. Demand response programs are applied to overcome the performance variance of renewable energy systems (RESs) as they offer an efficient solution for many problems such as generation cost, high demand peak to average ratios, and assist grid reliability during peak load periods. Real-Time Pricing (RTP), which is deployed in this work, is one of the main price-based demand response groups used to regulate electricity consumption of consumers. Four case studies are considered to confirm the robustness and effectiven... [more]
Anaerobic-Based Water Resources Recovery Facilities: A Review

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic fluidized bed membrane bioreactor (AFMBR), anaerobic membrane, anaerobic treatment, dissolved methane, energy self-sufficiency, water resources recovery facilities (WRRF)
The concept of water resources recovery facilities (WRRFs) has gained more attention as a more sustainable substitute for the conventional activated sludge-based wastewater treatment plant (CAS-WWTPs). Anaerobic treatment is advantageous due to its lower energy use, limited sludge production, and higher recovery of the soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) from the received wastewater. In this article, a critical review of the proposed scheme for the anaerobic-based WRRF (An-WRRFs) is presented which is preceded with discussion of CAS-WWTPs limitations. In addition, the evolution of anaerobic treatment from being viewed as wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to WRRF is demonstrated. It is attained that, even though anaerobic WWTPs (An-WWTPs) have simple and low energy mainline and very limited sludge handling process, its limited removal and recovery capacity have been widely reported, especially in cold weather. On the other hand, in the An-WRRF, higher energy expenditures are employed... [more]

Keywords: comparative analysis, component tolerances, electric vehicle, inductive power transfer, LCC compensation, Monte-Carlo analysis, series compensation, simulation model, wireless charging, wireless power transfer
The use of compensation networks increases the power transfer capability of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems in the battery charging process of electric vehicles (EVs). Among the proposed topologies, the Series-Series (SS) and the LCC networks are currently in widespread use in wireless battery chargers based on IPT systems. This paper focuses on the study of the behavior of both compensation topologies when they are detuned due to the tolerances of their components. To compare their performances, a Monte-Carlo analysis was carried out using Simulink and MATLAB. The tolerance values, assigned independently to each component, fall within a [ − 20 , 20] % range according to a normal distribution. Histograms and scatter plots were used for comparison purposes. The analysis reveals that the LCC network allows a tighter control over the currents that flow through the magnetic coupler coils. Moreover, it was found that the increments in those currents can be limited to some exten... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modular multilevel converter, pumped hydro storage, wind turbines
Due to its scalability, reliability, high power quality and flexibility, the modular multilevel converter is the standard solution for high-power high-voltage applications in which an AC−DC−AC connection is required such as high-voltage direct-current transmission systems. However, this converter presents some undesired features from both structural and operational perspectives. For example, it presents a high number of components, which results in high costs, size, weight and conduction losses. Moreover, the modular multilevel converter presents problems dealing with DC-side faults, with unbalanced grid conditions, and many internal control loops are required for its proper operation. In variable-frequency operation, the modular multilevel converter presents some serious limitations. The most critical are the high-voltage ripples, in the submodule capacitors, at low frequencies. Thus, many different AC−AC converter solutions, with modular multilevel structure, have been proposed as al... [more]
On the Acceptability of Electricity Demand Side Management by Time of Day
Satoshi Nakano, Ayu Washizu
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer behavior, demand response, demand side management, prosumer, random utility model
Advances in the introduction of fluctuating renewable energies, such as photovoltaics (PV), have caused power-system destabilization. However, stability can be improved if consumers change the way they use power, moving to time slots when the PV output in an area is high. In large cities in developed countries, where the types of distributed energy resources are varied, demand side management (DSM) in which consumers share power supplies and adjust the demand has received considerable attention. Under effective DSM that uses the latest information and communication technology to maximize the use of renewable energy, we believe that sparing use of appliances is not the only solution to address global warming. If behavioral change shifts the use of domestic appliances from one time slot to other time slots, we do not have to abandon the use of these appliances. The aim of this study is to determine the possibility of such behavioral changes in people in order to provide basic information... [more]

Keywords: impedance determination, lossy compression algorithms, singular value decomposition, wavelet transformation
One of the essential parameters to measure the stability and power-quality of an energy grid is the network impedance. Including distinct resonances which may also vary over time due to changing load or generation conditions in a network, the frequency characteristic of the impedance is an import part to analyse. The determination and analysis of the impedance go hand in hand with a massive amount of data output. The reduction of this high-resolution voltage and current datasets, while maintaining the fidelity of important information, is the main focus of this paper. The presented approach takes measured impedance datasets and a set of lossy compression procedures, to monitor the performance success with known key metrics. Afterwards, it continually compares the results of various lossy compression techniques. The innovative contribution is the combination of new and existing procedures as well as metrics in one approach, to reduce the size of the impedance datasets for the first time... [more]

Keywords: coal consumption, decomposition, energy mix, Indonesia, renewables, urbanization
To meet the Paris Agreement’s climate mitigation objectives, there is an urgent global need to reduce coal combustion. Yet coal usage, particularly in the power sector, is rising in many developing countries. Indonesia is a notable example. While government policy is widely considered as the principle driver of Indonesia’s increasing coal consumption, studies have largely overlooked the influence of socioeconomic forces. To understand these effects, we utilize a decomposition analysis to capture the individual effect of five drivers of coal consumption in Indonesia over 1965 to 2017: (1) the energy mix, (2) energy intensity of GDP, (3) population, (4) urbanization, and (5) urban incomes. Results show the energy mix has exerted the largest effect on coal consumption. In addition, by accounting for other socio-economic influences, we found that other less appreciated factors have contributed to rising coal consumption. In order of contribution these were the urban economic effect, the gr... [more]

In the last decades, several works have been carried out on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technologies, as they are powerful and efficient devices for energy conversion and electrochemical storage. By increasing use of renewable sources, a discontinuous amount of electricity is indeed released, and reliable storage systems represent the key feature in such a future energy scenario. In this context, systems based on reversible solid oxide cells (rSOCs) are gaining increasing attention. An rSOC is an electrochemical device that can operate sequentially between discharging (SOFC mode) and charging (SOEC mode); then, it is essential the electrodes are able to guarantee high catalytic activity, both in oxidation and reduction conditions. Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) has been widely recognized as one of the most promising electrode catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in SOFC technology because of its astonishing content of oxygen vacan... Batteries are combinations of electrochemical cells that generate electricity to power electrical devices. Batteries are continuously converting chemical energy to electrical energy, and require appropriate maintenance to provide maximum efficiency. Management systems having specialized monitoring features; such as charge controlling mechanisms and temperature regulation are used to prevent health, safety, and property hazards that complement the use of batteries. These systems utilize measures of merit to regulate battery performances. Figures such as the state-of-health (SOH) and state-of-charge (SOC) are used to estimate the performance and state of the battery. In this paper, we propose an intelligent method to investigate the aforementioned parameters using a data-driven approach. We use a machine learning algorithm that extracts significant features from the discharge curves to estimate these parameters. Extensive simulations have been carried out to evaluate the performance of t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial force, cutting pump, radial force, rotary cutter, unsteady pressure
In order to understand the pressure fluctuation characteristics of a semi-open cutting pump, the three-dimensional unsteady flow fields were calculated. External and internal flow characteristics of four schemes with different relative angles between the rotary cutter and the impeller were studied. The pressure fluctuations in the lower plate, the upper plate, the clearance between the rotary cutter and the fixed cutter, the first section in volute and nearby parts of the tongue were all analyzed, which are all the places that pressure distributions are greatly affected by the static and dynamic interaction, and at the same time, the force on the impeller was also analyzed. The results show that the fluctuations at different positions change periodically; the main frequency is blade frequency. The amplitude of pressure fluctuation decreases from near the rotating part to far away, from near the tongue to far from the tongue. Due to the influence of both impeller and rotary cutter, the... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex shape coils, induction brazing, industrial applications, numerical analysis
The electromagnetic process happening between an induction brazing coil and the brazing assembly was studied and is described in the following pages. Using the tools of numerical analysis, we managed to achieve 3-D simulation of the process, which includes presentation of the magnetic field, thermal heat transfer, and time dependence. The results presented are considered for two of commonly used materials—copper and stainless steel in the shape of pipes. The induction brazing coil is a complex C-shape to match with the real industrial practices. The results obtained from the model are in accordance with the experimental results, as in both the model and the experiment, the required temperature was reached in about 6 s. It was found that during the brazing process, the inductance of the winding increases by about 4 nH and the resistance by 1.5 mΩ, which is important for the coordination of the power supply.

Driven by global concerns about the climate and the environment, the world is opting for renewable energy sources (RESs), such as wind and solar. However, RESs suffer from the discredit of intermittency, for which energy storage systems (ESSs) are gaining popularity worldwide. Surplus energy obtained from RESs can be stored in several ways, and later utilized during periods of intermittencies or shortages. The idea of storing excess energy is not new, and numerous researches have been conducted to adorn this idea with innovations and improvements. This review is a humble attempt to assemble all the available knowledge on ESSs to benefit novice researchers in this field. This paper covers all core concepts of ESSs, including its evolution, elaborate classification, their comparison, the current scenario, applications, business models, environmental impacts, policies, barriers and probable solutions, and future prospects. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, electric furnace, heat treatment, tempering, thermal efficiency
Heat treatments, such as steel tempering, are temperature-controlled processes. It allows ferrous steel to stabilize its structure after the heat treatment and quenching stages. The tempering temperature also determines the hardness of the steel, preferably to its optimum working strength. In a tempering furnace, a heat-resistant fan is commonly employed to generate moderate gas circulation to obtain adequate temperature homogeneity and heat transfer. Nevertheless, there is a tradeoff because the overall thermal efficiency is expected to reduce because of the high rotating speed of the fan. Therefore, this study numerically investigates the thermal efficiency changes of an electric tempering furnace due to changes in the rotating speed of the fan and the effects on temperature homogeneity and the heat transfer rate to the load. Heat losses through the walls were calculated from the external temperature measurement of the furnace. Four different speeds were simulated: 720, 990, 1350, an... [more]

Keywords: comprehensive evaluation, high-power medium-frequency transformer, optimal design, power electronic transformer
A power electronic transformer (PET) is applied to the high-speed train for lightweight demand. A 300 kW/5 kHz high-power medium-frequency transformer (HPMFT) using hollow conductors in a power unit of the PET is optimally designed in this paper. The target of the design is to balance the loss, leakage inductance, and weight of the HPMFT. For this purpose, the design parameters of the HPMFT are firstly confirmed according to the system structure and parameters of the PET. Secondly, the design process of HPMFT is developed. Finally, the results of 48 design schemes of core-type and shell-type structures are compared by the comprehensive evaluation standard, which equilibrates the three above objective parameters of the HPMFT. According to the optimal scheme, a prototype is manufactured, whose test results verify the correctness of the optimal design method.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: beechwood, enzymatic hydrolysis, high solids, pretreatment, steam explosion, whole slurry
Steam explosion is a well-known process to pretreat lignocellulosic biomass in order to enhance sugar yields in enzymatic hydrolysis, but pretreatment conditions have to be optimized individually for each material. In this study, we investigated how the results of a pretreatment optimization procedure are influenced by the chosen reaction conditions in the enzymatic hydrolysis. Beechwood was pretreated by steam explosion and the resulting biomass was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis at glucan loadings of 1% and 5% employing either washed solids or the whole pretreatment slurry. For enzymatic hydrolysis in both reaction modes at a glucan loading of 1%, the glucose yields markedly increased with increasing severity and with increasing pretreatment temperature at identical severities and maximal values were reached at a pretreatment temperature of 230 °C. However, the optimal severity was 5.0 for washed solids enzymatic hydrolysis, but only 4.75 for whole slurry enzymatic hydrolysis. Whe... [more]

Keywords: CIGMA, Computational Fluid Dynamics, conjugate heat transfer, containment vessel, natural convection, thermal hydraulics
In the case of a severe accident, natural convection plays an important role in the atmosphere mixing of nuclear reactor containments. In this case, the natural convection might not in the steady-state condition. Hence, instead of steady-state simulation, the transient simulation should be performed to understand natural convection in the accident scenario within a nuclear reactor containment. The present study, therefore, was aimed at the transient 3-D numerical simulations of natural convection of air around a cylindrical containment with unsteady thermal boundary conditions (BCs) at the vessel wall. For this purpose, the experiment series was done in the CIGMA facility at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The upper vessel or both the upper vessel and the middle jacket was cooled by subcooled water, while the lower vessel was thermally insulated. A 3-D model was simulated with OpenFOAM®, applying the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equations (URANS) model. Different turbule... [more]

Keywords: acoustic emission, b-value, damage evolution, different loading modes, fractal dimension, postpeak stage
To study the evolution of acoustic emission (AE) parameters and the differences in the fracturing and failure process of rocks under different loading modes, AE signals of marble were detected during uniaxial compression tests (UCTs), direct tensile tests (DTTs) and indirect tensile tests (ITTs) in this paper. Then, the temporal and spatial evolution of the AE parameters and damage development of rock under different loading modes were analyzed. The results showed that the sequence of total AE events and AE counts under different loading modes was UCT > DTT > ITT. In the DTT and ITT, the energy release of AE signals was concentrated at the peak stress and weakened rapidly afterward, whereas in the UCT, there were still a large number of AE signals accompanied by violent AE energy release during the postpeak stage. The generation mechanism of AE sources in rock and the corresponding failure modes were different under different loading modes. In the UCT, the multiple cleavage fractures w... [more]

Eduardo Caro, Jesús Juan
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Seasonal Reg-ARIMA models, short-term electric load forecasting, time series
In any electric power system, the Transmission System Operator (TSO) requires the use of short-term load forecasting algorithms. These predictions are essential for appropriate planning of the energy resources and optimal coordination for the generation agents. This study focuses on the development of a prediction model to be applied to the ten main Spanish islands: seven insular systems in the Canary Islands, and three systems in the Balearic Islands. An exhaustive analysis is presented concerning both the estimation results and the forecasting accuracy, benchmarked against an alternative prediction software and a set of modified models. The developed models are currently being used by the Spanish TSO (Red Eléctrica de España, REE) to make hourly one-day-ahead forecasts of the electricity demand of insular systems.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost of PV recycling, end of life of PV, FRELP, photovoltaic waste
With solar photovoltaics (PV) playing an increasing role in our global energy market, it is now timely and critical to understand the end of life management of the solar panels. Recycling the panels can be an important pathway, possibly recovering a considerable amount of materials and adding economic benefits from currently installed solar panels. Yet, to date, the costs and benefits of recycling, especially when externality costs resulting from environmental pollution are considered, are largely unknown. In this study, we quantified the private and externality costs and benefits of recycling crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV panels. We found that the private cost of end-of-life (EoL) management of the c-Si PV module is USD 6.7/m2 and much of this cost is from transporting (USD 3.3/m2) and landfilling (USD 3.1/m2), while the actual recycling process (the cost of consumed materials, electricity or the investment for the recycling facilities) is very small (USD 0.3/m2). We found that the ex... [more]

The fire growth rate index (FIGRA), which is the ratio of the maximum value of the heat release rate (Qmax) and the time (tmax) to reach the maximum heat release rate, is a general method to evaluate a material in the fire-retardant performance in fire technology. The object of this study aims to predict FIGRA of the polyethylene foam pipe insulation in accordance with the scale factor (Sf), the volume fraction of the pipe insulation (VF) and the ignition heat source (Qig). The compartments made of fireboard have been mock-up with 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5 reduced scales of the compartment as specified in ISO 20632. The heat release rate data of the pipe insulation with the variation of Sf, VF, and Qig are measured from 33 experiments to correlate with FIGRA. Based on a critical analysis of the heat transfer phenomenon from previous research literature, the predictions of Qmax and tmax are presented. It is noticeable that the fire-retardant grade of the polyethylene foam pipe insulation could... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, fault diagnosis, feature selection, Machine Learning, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
The present paper is focused on proposing and implementing a methodology for robust and rapid diagnosis of PEM fuel cells’ faults using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Accordingly, EIS tests have been first conducted on four identical fresh PEM fuel cells along with an aged PEMFC at different current density levels and operating conditions. A label, which represents the presence of a type of fault (flooding or dehydration) or the regular operation, is then assigned to each test based on the expert knowledge employing the cell’s spectrum on the Nyquist plot. Since the time required to generate the spectrum should be minimized and considering the notable difference in the time needed for carrying out EIS tests at different frequency ranges, the frequencies have been categorized into four clusters (based on the corresponding order of magnitude: >1 kHz, >100 Hz, >10 Hz, >1 Hz). Next, for each frequency cluster and each specific current density, while utilizing a classificatio... [more]

Keywords: city governance, energy strategy, energy transition, spatial planning, urban form
The UN Paris Agreement of November 2016 recognises the need for a ‘cleaner and more efficient energy system’ as a core policy goal to address climate change. The spatial and urban form of cities is a key factor in achieving more efficient energy production and consumption and becomes more important with rapid urbanisation across much of the world. City urban form and planning are therefore potentially powerful levers for the energy transition. This paper examines the extent to which city ‘energy strategies’ address the critical spatial and urban form characteristics of cities as a means to achieve a more efficient energy system. We construct an assessment framework of key aspects of the spatial and urban development of cities related to transport and accessibility and urban form. The framework is used to assess the degree to which energy strategies take into consideration aspects of urban development in four cities that are taking significant action on the energy policy: Hong Kong Oakl...
