Heat Exchanger Sizing for Organic Rankine Cycle
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat exchanger, organic rankine cycle, waste heat
Approximately 45% of power generated by conventional power systems is wasted due to power conversion process limitations. Waste heat recovery can be achieved in an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by converting low temperature waste heat into useful energy, at relatively low-pressure operating conditions. The ORC system considered in this study utilises R-1234yf as the working fluid; the work output and thermal efficiency were evaluated for several operational pressures. Plate and shell and tube heat exchangers were analysed for the three sections: preheater, evaporator and superheater for the hot side; and precooler and condenser for the cold side. Each heat exchanger section was sized using the appropriate correlation equations for single-phase and two-phase fluid models. The overall heat exchanger size was evaluated for optimal operational conditions. It was found that the plate heat exchanger out-performed the shell and tube in regard to the overall heat transfer coefficient and area.

Analysis of Microwave Thermal Stress Fracture Characteristics and Size Effect of Sandstone under Microwave Heating
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: microwave energy, microwave heating, sandstone, size effect, temperature, thermal stress fracture
Microwave-induced rock fracture is one of the promising approaches of achieving non-blasting continuous mining and assisted mechanical rock breaking. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the temperature effect and fracture characteristics of rocks of different sizes under microwave heating; however, there are few studies in this field. Microwave heating of φ 50 × 100 mm, φ 50 × 50 mm, and φ 50 × 25 mm sandstone samples with different heating powers and times was performed to measure the temperature of the sample, the microwave energy absorbed, the mass, and the P-wave velocity before and after heating. The results show suppress that (i) under the same heating conditions, the mass difference and the temperature increase range of φ 50 × 100 mm and φ 50 × 50 mm samples are larger than that of the φ 50 × 25 mm samples; (ii) the wave velocity change rate and the damage factor of samples increase with the increase of heating power and time; (iii) different size spec... Trade in the Carbon-Constrained Future: Exploiting the Comparative Carbon Advantage of Swedish Trade
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon emissions, comparative carbon advantage, foreign trade
This paper introduces a new concept of comparative carbon advantage as a potential climate mitigation tool. According to the concept, welfare gains in terms of reduced global CO2 emissions can be achieved by exploiting cross-country sectoral differences in carbon intensity and decarbonized electricity system. The paper empirically tests the concept by utilizing annual data of Sweden between 1995 and 2008. Overall, the results show that Sweden contributed nearly 590 million tons of potential CO2 emissions savings through its exports by having an efficient and low-carbon production and electricity system. This total amount of 590 million tons of CO2 emissions relates to the total savings made if the same amount and composition of Swedish exports was produced using the world average technology. Furthermore, the contribution of Sweden’s low carbon electricity generation was over 34% of the total savings, of which some 20% were direct exports of electricity and 80% was electricity embodied... A Framework for Offering Short-Term Demand-Side Flexibility to a Flexibility Marketplace
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aggregator, Batteries, demand-side flexibility, flexibility marketplace, flexibility trading
The decarbonization of the power sector involves electrification and a massive deployment of variable renewable energy sources, leading to an increase of local transmission congestion and ramping challenges. A possible solution to secure grid stability is local flexibility markets, in which prosumers can offer demand-side flexibility to the distribution system operator or other flexibility buyers through an aggregator. The purpose of this study was to develop a framework for estimating and offering short-term demand-side flexibility to a flexibility marketplace, with the main focus being baseline estimation and bid generation. The baseline is estimated based on forecasts that have been corrected for effects from earlier flexibility activations and potential planned use of internal flexibility. Available flexibility volumes are then estimated based on the baseline, physical properties of the flexibility asset and agreed constraints for baseline deviation. The estimated available flexibi... Long- and Short-Term Comparative Analysis of Renewable Energy Sources
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: harmonic distortion, power quality, renewable energy sources
Network working conditions are influenced noticeably by the connection of renewable energy sources to distribution networks. This becomes more and more important due to the increase in renewable energy source penetration over the last few years. This in turn can lead to a mass effect. As a result, the classical open network model with simple unidirectional direction of energy flow has been replaced with an active model that includes many local energy sources. This paper deals with the analysis of long- and short-term changes in power and energy generated by three types of renewable energy sources with similar rated power and which operate in the same region (i.e., located no more than tens of kilometers away). The obtained results can be a starting point for a broader evaluation of the influence of renewable energy sources on power quality in power systems, which can be both positive (supply reliability) and negative (voltage fluctuations and higher harmonics in current and voltage wav... Super-Resolution DoA Estimation on a Co-Prime Array via Positive Atomic Norm Minimization
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: co-prime array, continuous compressive sensing, direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, positive atomic norm minimization, super-resolution
A super-resolution direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm that employs a co-prime array and positive atomic norm minimization (ANM) is proposed. To exploit larger array cardinality, the co-prime array vector is constructed by arranging elements of a correlation matrix. The positive ANM is a technique that can enhance resolution when the coefficients of the atoms are the positive real numbers. A novel optimization problem is proposed to ensure the coefficients of the atoms are the positive real numbers, and the positive ANM is employed after solving the optimization problem. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves high resolution and has lower complexity than the other ANM-based super-resolution DoA estimation algorithm.

A Review on Thermoelectric Generators: Progress and Applications
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: figure of merit, nanostructuring, thermoelectric generator, thermoelectric materials
A thermoelectric effect is a physical phenomenon consisting of the direct conversion of heat into electrical energy (Seebeck effect) or inversely from electrical current into heat (Peltier effect) without moving mechanical parts. The low efficiency of thermoelectric devices has limited their applications to certain areas, such as refrigeration, heat recovery, power generation and renewable energy. However, for specific applications like space probes, laboratory equipment and medical applications, where cost and efficiency are not as important as availability, reliability and predictability, thermoelectricity offers noteworthy potential. The challenge of making thermoelectricity a future leader in waste heat recovery and renewable energy is intensified by the integration of nanotechnology. In this review, state-of-the-art thermoelectric generators, applications and recent progress are reported. Fundamental knowledge of the thermoelectric effect, basic laws, and parameters affecting the... [more]

Important Factors for Consideration during the Specification of SF6 Circuit Breakers for High Voltage Generators
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternating current component, asynchronous connection, circuit breaker, direct current component, energy system, generator
This paper describes and analyzes the phenomena that occur in the case of a current interruption due to faults in the high voltage circuit breaker. That happens during connection of a generator to the network without meeting the synchronization conditions. This paper also describes and analyzes the important factors that have to be considered during the specification of SF6 circuit breakers for high voltage generators. A high direct current component in the fault current poses a major problem during such interruptions. To investigate this problem and propose possible solutions, simulations were performed on a power network model completed with the network’s data, using software such as EMTP-ATP, PSS-E and MATLAB. Various modes of operation were simulated, which are important for analyzing the strain on circuit breakers near the generator. Based on the performed simulations, it can be concluded that circuit breakers with rapid reactions in interrupting the fault current in an energy sys... [more]

Proving a Concept of Flexible Under-Frequency Load Shedding with Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: frequency stability margin, hardware-in-the-loop testing, intelligent electronic device, proof of concept, rate-of-change-of-frequency, real-time digital simulator, under-frequency load shedding
It is widely recognized that in the transition from conventional electrical power systems (EPSs) towards smart grids, electrical voltage frequency will be greatly affected. This is why this research is extremely valuable, especially since rate-of-change-of-frequency (RoCoF) is often considered as a potential means of resolving newly arisen problems, but is often challenged in practice due to the noise and its oscillating character. In this paper, the authors further developed and tested one of the new technologies related to under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) protection. Since the basic idea was to enhance the selected technology’s readiness level, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup with an RTDS was assembled. The under-frequency technology was implemented in an intelligent electronic device (IED) and included in the HIL setup. The IED acted as one of several protection devices, representing a last-resort system protection scheme. All main contributions of this research deal with usi... [more]

Coal Combustion Products Management toward a Circular Economy—A Case Study of the Coal Power Plant Sector in Poland
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, coal combustion products, coal power plant, industrial waste
Coal combustion products can be considered as commercial products or waste depending on the quality of the coal, the combustion process, and the country’s legislation. The circular economy can create incentives for the implementation of new business models in large power plants in cooperation with coal mines and users of coal combustion products. This is particularly important in Poland, where coal still remains the main source of energy, employing over 80,000 workers. The objective of this study was to assess the readiness for change toward a circular economy and to identify challenges, barriers, and plans at seven large power plants. To do this, a final questionnaire was developed after checking environmental reporting, a CATI survey, and brainstorming between circular economy leaders from science, industry, and non-governmental organizations. The results indicate that even if the great economic and environmental potential of coal combustion products management are understood, all re... [more]

Comparative Analysis of National Policies for Electric Vehicle Uptake Using Econometric Models
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electric vehicle, policy incentive, public charging infrastructure
As electric vehicles (EVs) have been widely discussed as a promising way to mitigate the effect of climate change, various policies have been implemented across the world to promote the uptake of EVs. Policymakers also paid attention to the density of public charging points. In this paper, we examined the impact of policies on EV markets in the post subsidy era with multiple linear regression analysis using panel data on 13 countries from 2015 to 2018. Five of the independent variables showed significantly positive effects on the 1% level in different regression models: fast/slow charger density, mandate, purchasing restriction and waiver. Subsidies showed significance only on 5% level for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Financial stimulates have experienced a declining marginal effect, whereas a high density of fast chargers has the most significantly positive effect on EV uptake. This paper suggests policymakers can invest more in completing the public infrastructures of EVs, espec... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy management, demand response, smart building
The aim of this work was to develop an optimal model for an energy management strategy in a real micro-grid, which involves a smart building, a photovoltaic system with storage, and a plug-in full electric vehicle. A controller based on a mathematical algorithm was the core of each strategy, which directly acted on a relay board managing the interconnection between the different elements comprising the micro-grid. The development of an optimization model involving binary variables required an efficient code that achieved solutions in a short time. The analyzed case-study corresponded to the solar energy research center (CIESOL) smart building, a bioclimatic building, that is located at the University of Almería (Spain), designated to research in renewable energies. Using the methodologies described in this work, the total cost of the smart building energy consumption was minimized by decreasing the power supplied from the grid, especially at peak hours. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: collaborative capacity planning, distributed wind power (DWP), energy storage system (ESS), Optimization, variable-structure copula
Distributed wind power (DWP) needs to be consumed locally under a 110 kV network without reverse power flow in China. To maximize the use of DWP, this paper proposes a novel method for capacity planning of DWP with participation of the energy storage system (ESS) in multiple scenarios by means of a variable-structure copula and optimization theory. First, wind power and local load are predicted at the planning stage by an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, then, variable-structure copula models are established based on different time segment strategies to depict the correlation of DWP and load, and the joint typical scenarios of DWP and load are generated by clustering, and a capacity planning model of DWP is proposed considering investment and operation cost, and environmental benefit and line loss cost under typical scenario conditions. Moreover, a collaborative capacity planning model for DWP and ESS is prospectively proposed. Based on the modified IEEE-33 bus system, the r... [more]

A New Data-Based Dust Estimation Unit for PV Panels
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dust accumulation, dust estimation, regression models, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Solar Panels
Solar photovoltaic (PV) is playing a major role in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) smart grid infrastructure. However, one of the challenges facing PV-based energy systems is the dust accumulation on solar panels. Dust accumulation on solar panels results in a high degradation in the output power. The UAE has low intensity rainfall and wind velocity; therefore solar panels must be cleaned manually or using automated cleaning methods. Estimating dust accumulation on solar panels will increase the output power and reduce maintenance costs by initiating cleaning actions only when required. In this paper, the impact of natural dust accumulation on solar panels is investigated using field measurements and regression modeling. Experimental data were collected under various real weather conditions and controlled levels of dust. Moreover, this paper proposes a data-driven approach based on machine learning to estimate the accumulated dust level on solar panels. In this approach, a dust estimati... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: case study, defossilization, energy transition flexibility, long-term energy storage, ozonation, power-to-gas, sewage treatment, water-energy-nexus
To achieve the Paris climate protection goals there is an urgent need for action in the energy sector. Innovative concepts in the fields of short-term flexibility, long-term energy storage and energy conversion are required to defossilize all sectors by 2040. Water management is already involved in this field with biogas production and power generation and partly with using flexibility options. However, further steps are possible. Additionally, from a water management perspective, the elimination of organic micropollutants (OMP) is increasingly important. In this feasibility study a concept is presented, reacting to energy surplus and deficits from the energy grid and thus providing the needed long-term storage in combination with the elimination of OMP in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The concept is based on the operation of an electrolyzer, driven by local power production on the plant (photovoltaic (PV), combined heat and power plant (CHP)-units) as well as renewabl... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: airtightness, apartment building, multiple linear regression, prediction model, statistical analysis
In this study, a model equation is derived that uses a statistical analysis based on empirical models to predict the airtightness of reinforced concrete apartment buildings popular in Asian regions. Airtightness data from 486 units personally measured by the authors in the past eight years are used. As major variables used in the prediction model, two groups of variables are configured for the geometric components of the envelope, which is a major path of airflow in a building and is where air infiltration and leakage occur. The two groups of variables represent (1) the areas of the individual components forming the envelope and (2) the connection lengths between different components of the envelope. For the effective prediction of airtightness, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied step by step in this study. The results of the correlation analysis indicated that the areas of the slab and the window are the area variables that present the greatest impact,... [more]

Keywords: characterization, diesel-biodiesel, emissions, infrared spectra, LabVIEW, virtual instrument
The present work is about evaluating the emission characteristics of biodiesel-diesel blends in a reciprocating engine. The biodiesel was produced and characterized before the test. A virtual instrument was developed to evaluate the velocity, fuel consumption, temperature, and emissions of O2, CO, SO2, and NO from an ignition-compression engine of four cylinders with a constant rate of 850 rpm. The percentages of soybean-biodiesel (B) blended with Mexican-diesel (D) analyzed were 2% B-98% D (B2), 5% B-95% B (B5), and 20% B-80% D (B20). The biodiesel was obtained through a transesterification process and was characterized using Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system (ESS), LED-battery, metal-insulator-transition (MIT), over-temperature-protection (OTP), power-conversion
Extracting renewable energy from solar and wind energy systems, fuel cells, and tidal power plants requires DC distribution and energy storage devices. In particular, a metal-insulator-transition (MIT) sensor can be applied to the over-temperature-protection (OTP) circuit, to stop the LED-battery power-conversion system when over-temperature occurs. Recently, there have been instances of battery systems catching fire because of poor battery design, over-charging, over-voltage, cell balancing failure, and an inadequate battery management system circuit. For continuous stabilization using an LED-battery power-conversion system, a 450 Wh class battery system that can monitor the temperature of battery packs with an MIT sensor was developed in this study. Furthermore, an OTP circuit involving an MIT sensor to protect LED-battery power-conversion systems is proposed. According to the results, this approach is required to continuously perform the stabilization of LED-battery systems.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, carbon monoxide, clathrate compounds, hydroquinone, Syngas
Clathrate formation and guest behaviors in hydroquinone (HQ) clathrates were investigated for the first time using ternary (CO + CO2 + H2) gas mixtures. Two gas compositions (low and high CO2 concentrations) were used to simulate synthesis gases generated from various sources. After reaction at 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 MPa, the conversion yield of pure HQ to the clathrate form reached >90% if the CO2 partial pressure was 0.7 MPa or higher. In addition, CO2 was the most abundant occupant, whereas CO was only detectable at higher CO concentrations and experimental pressures. The separation efficiency values expressed as molar ratios of CO2 to CO in the solid clathrate form were found to be 12.7 and 23.9 MPa at 4.0 and 6.0 MPa, respectively. The experimental and the calculated results in this study provide information useful for the design of a clathrate-based separation process for synthesis gases from various sources (i.e., synthesis gases with various compositions).
