Study of Energy Compensation Techniques in Photovoltaic Solar Systems with the Use of Supercapacitors in Low-Voltage Networks
Luis Gerardo González, Rommel Chacon, Bernardo Delgado, Dario Benavides, Juan Espinoza
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low pass filter, moving average, Photovoltaic solar system, power fluctuations, ramp control, supercapacitors
The power generated by photovoltaic solar systems is exposed to high variability of irradiance mainly due to weather conditions, which cause instability in the electrical networks connected to these systems. This study shows the typical behavior of solar irradiance in an Andean city, which presents considerable variations that can reach up to 63% of the nominal power of the photovoltaic system, at time intervals in the order of seconds. The study covers the application of 3 techniques to reduce power fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC), with the incorporation of energy storage systems, under the same irradiance conditions. Supercapacitors were used as the storage system, which were selected for their high efficiency and useful life. A state of charge control is also applied by means of a hysteresis band. The three algorithms studied show similar behaviors; however, the ramp control technique has the best performance. The storage system was dimensioned based on the photov... [more]
Drug Repurposing Using Biological Networks
Francisco Javier Somolinos, Carlos León, Sara Guerrero-Aspizua
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: drug interactions, drug repurposing, drug targets, metabolic networks, network analysis, network models
Drug repositioning is a strategy to identify new uses for existing, approved, or research drugs that are outside the scope of its original medical indication. Drug repurposing is based on the fact that one drug can act on multiple targets or that two diseases can have molecular similarities, among others. Currently, thanks to the rapid advancement of high-performance technologies, a massive amount of biological and biomedical data is being generated. This allows the use of computational methods and models based on biological networks to develop new possibilities for drug repurposing. Therefore, here, we provide an in-depth review of the main applications of drug repositioning that have been carried out using biological network models. The goal of this review is to show the usefulness of these computational methods to predict associations and to find candidate drugs for repositioning in new indications of certain diseases.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: additives, automobile, cobalt, fine mill, magnet, motor, replacement, strontium-ferrite
In this work, an experiment was carried out to investigate the preparation condition of anisotropic, Fe-deficient, M-type Sr ferrite with optimum magnetic and physical properties by changing experimental parameters, such as the La substitution amount and little additive modification during fine milling process. The compositions of the calcined ferrites were chosen according to the stoichiometry LaSr1-xFe12-2xO19, where M-type single-phase calcined powder was synthesized with a composition of x = 0.30. The effect of CaCO3, SiO2, and Co3O4 inter-additives on the Sr ferrite was also discussed in order to obtain low-temperature sintered magnets. The magnetic properties of Br = 4608 Gauss, bHc = 3650 Oe, iHc = 3765 Oe, and (BH)max = 5.23 MGOe were obtained for Sr ferrite hard magnets with low cobalt content at 1.7 wt%, which will eventually be used as high-end permanent magnets for the high-efficiency motor application in automobiles with Br > 4600 ± 50 G and iHc > 3600 ± 50 Oe.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: continuous flow, granules, hydraulic selection pressure, MBR
To understand the long-term stability of nitrifying granules in a membrane bioreactor (GMBR), a membrane module was submerged in an airlift reactor to eliminate the hydraulic selection pressure that was believed to be the driving force of aerobic granulation. The long-term monitoring results showed that the structure of nitrifying granules could remain stable for 305 days in the GMBR without hydraulic selection pressure; however, the majority of the granule structure was actually inactive due to mass diffusion limitation. As a consequence, active biomass free of mass diffusion limitation only inhabited the top 60−80 µm layer of the nitrifying granules. There was a dynamic equilibrium between bioflocs and membrane, i.e., 25% of bioflocs attached on the membrane surface within the last nine days of the backwash cycle in synchronization with the emergence of a peak of soluble extracellular polymeric substances (sEPS), with a concentration of around 47 mg L−1. Backwash can eventually detac... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: chemical evolution, HCN polymers, prebiotic chemistry
Titan’s haze is strongly suspected to be an HCN-derived polymer, but despite the first in situ measurements by the ESA-Huygens space probe, its chemical composition and formation process remain largely unknown. To investigate this question, we simulated the atmospheric haze formation process, experimentally. We synthesized analogues of Titan’s haze, named Titan tholins, in an irradiated N2−CH4 gas mixture, mimicking Titan’s upper atmosphere chemistry. HCN was monitored in situ in the gas phase simultaneously with the formation and evolution of the haze particles. We show that HCN is produced as long as the particles are absent, and is then progressively consumed when the particles appear and grow. This work highlights HCN as an effective precursor of Titan’s haze and confirms the HCN-derived polymer nature of the haze.

Keywords: ART initiation, cost-efficacy, HIV, Romania
We aimed to assess the prescription trends of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in one infectious diseases department and the cost-efficacy (C/E) of different regimens used in treatment-naïve patients. The C/E was assessed with a software application developed by a group of researchers in Spain. The efficacy was already calculated in the application. The costs included the local cost of antiretrovirals and other direct costs specific to our institution. In the software application, the C/E reference regimen was ABC/3TC/DTG. In total, 181 HIV-infected patients were diagnosed and initiated cART during 2015−2019. The proportion of patients treated with integrase-strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-based regimens increased from 2015−2018 (54%) to the end of 2019 (81%). The relative C/E ranged from 0.90 to 1.28 for the evaluated INSTI-based regimens. Among INSTI-based regimens, ABC/3TC/DTG and TAF/FTC/EVG/c are the regimens with similar efficacy and relative C/E.

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: 3′-sialyllactose, CTP regeneration, human milk oligosaccharides, multi-enzyme, single whole cell
Sialyllactose (SL) is one of the most important acidic oligosaccharides in human milk, which plays an important role in the health of infants. In this work, an efficient multi-enzyme cascade was developed in a single whole cell to produce 3′-SL. We constructed two compatible plasmids with double cloning sites to co-express four genes. Different combinations were assessed to verify the optimal catalytic ability. Then, the conversion temperature, pH, and stability under the optimal temperature and pH were investigated. Moreover, the optimal conversion conditions and surfactant concentration were determined. By using the optimal conditions (35 °C, pH 7.0, 20 mM polyphosphate, 10 mM cytidine monophosphate (CMP), 20 mM MgCl2), 25 mL and 4 L conversion systems were carried out to produce 3′-SL. Similar results were obtained between different volume conversion reactions, which led the maximum production of 3′-SL to reach 53 mM from 54.2 mM of sialic acid (SA) in the 25 mL system and 52.8 mM o... Stability of a Viscous Liquid Jet in a Coaxial Twisting Compressible Airflow
Li-Mei Guo, Ming Lü, Zhi Ning
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dominant mode, jet stability, swirl, twist
Based on the linear stability analysis, a mathematical model for the stability of a viscous liquid jet in a coaxial twisting compressible airflow has been developed. It takes into account the twist and compressibility of the surrounding airflow, the viscosity of the liquid jet, and the cavitation bubbles within the liquid jet. Then, the effects of aerodynamics caused by the gas−liquid velocity difference on the jet stability are analyzed. The results show that under the airflow ejecting effect, the jet instability decreases first and then increases with the increase of the airflow axial velocity. When the gas−liquid velocity ratio A = 1, the jet is the most stable. When the gas−liquid velocity ratio A > 2, this is meaningful for the jet breakup compared with A = 0 (no air axial velocity). When the surrounding airflow swirls, the airflow rotation strength E will change the jet dominant mode. E has a stabilizing effect on the liquid jet under the axisymmetric mode, while E is conducive t... [more]
Transient Permeabilization of Living Cells: Combining Shear Flow and Acoustofluidic Trapping for the Facilitated Uptake of Molecules

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: acoustic trap, acoustofluidics, calcein, chaotic advection, drug delivery, FITC-dextran, GFP, microfluidics, permeabilization, pore, structural phase transition, surface acoustic waves
Here, we present a novel approach for the transient permeabilization of cells. We combined laminar shear flow in a microchannel with chaotic advection employing surface acoustic waves. First, as a fundamental result on the one hand, and as a kind of reference measurement for the more complex acoustofluidic approach on the other hand, we studied the permeabilization of cells in pure shear flow in a microchannel with Y-geometry. As a proof of principle, we used fluorescent dyes as model drugs and investigated their internalization into HeLa cells. We found that drug uptake scaled non-linearly with flow rate and thus shear stress. For calcein, we obtained a maximal enhancement factor of about 12 at an optimum flow rate of Q = 500 µL/h in the geometry used here compared to static incubation. This result is discussed in the light of structural phase transitions of lipid membranes accompanied by non-linear effects, as the plasma membrane is the main barrier to overcome. Second, we demonstrat... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: cascaded H-bridges (CHB) multilevel inverters (MLI), Selective Harmonics Elimination (SHE), Selective Harmonics Mitigation (SHM), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)
This paper considers cascaded H-bridges multilevel inverters with 2 n dc sources, n integer, n > 0 and proposes a new general formula to compute those 2 n switching angles capable of eliminating n + 1 harmonics and their respective multiples from the output voltage waveform. The proposed procedure uses only scalar products and avoids linear systems, therefore it has a low computational cost. Computed angles do not depend on modulation index, moreover, voltage sources vary linearly. A mathematical proof is given to validate the formula. Three-phase implementations eliminate or mitigate a significant amount of low order harmonics, thus resulting in very low total harmonic distortion. The proposed formula has been experimentally validated using a single-phase nine-level cascaded H-bridge inverter prototype, resulting in a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 5.59%; the first not-mitigated harmonic is the 17th.

Keywords: electronics cooling, measurements, optical efficiency, power LEDs, self-heating, thermal pads, thermal resistance
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the influence of thermal pads on electric, optical, and thermal parameters of power LEDs. Measurements of parameters, such as thermal resistance, optical efficiency, and optical power, were performed for selected types of power LEDs operating with a thermal pad and without it at different values of the diode forward current and temperature of the cold plate. First, the measurement set-up used in the paper is described in detail. Then, the measurement results obtained for both considered manners of power LED assembly are compared. Some characteristics that illustrate the influence of forward current and temperature of the cold plate on electric, thermal, and optical properties of the tested devices are presented and discussed. It is shown that the use of the thermal pad makes it possible to achieve more advantageous values of operating parameters of the considered semiconductor devices at lower values of their junction temperature, which guarante... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical subsystems, power generation, time series
Academic attention is being paid to the study of hierarchical time series. Especially in the electrical sector, there are several applications in which information can be organized into a hierarchical structure. The present study analyzed hourly power generation in Brazil (2018−2020), grouped according to each of the electrical subsystems and their respective sources of generating energy. The objective was to calculate the accuracy of the main measures of aggregating and disaggregating the forecasts of the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Error, Trend, Seasonal (ETS) models. Specifically, the following hierarchical approaches were analyzed: (i) bottom-up (BU), (ii) top-down (TD), and (iii) optimal reconciliation. The optimal reconciliation models showed the best mean performance, considering the primary predictive windows. It was also found that energy forecasts in the South subsystem presented greater inaccuracy compared to the others, which signals the need for in... [more]
Influence of Two-Phase Crossflow for Void Prediction in Bundles Using Thermal-Hydraulic System Codes

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crossflow, MARS-KS, PSBT, TRACE, void fraction
The previous study, where the void fraction predictability of three different thermal-hydraulic system codes was assessed against PSBT (PWR Subchannel and Bundle Test) benchmark data, indicated a general overprediction tendency of all system codes, especially in bundles. Because all codes have been utilized for best-estimate analyses, it is necessary to conduct further assessments in order to find the root cause of the overprediction. A further assessment has been performed using two thermal-hydraulic system codes, TRACE V5.0 patch 5 and MARS-KS 1.4, and the assessment has been carried out for both one- and multi-dimensional components. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the predictability of the void fraction between one- and multi-dimensional components. In addition, it is found that the turbulent mixing model implemented for the multi-dimensional component of MARS-KS does not play an important role in the prediction of void distribution. Meanwhile, TRACE... [more]
Investigation on the Insulation Resistance Characteristics of Low Voltage Cable

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: accelerated degradation, Arrhenius equation, cable fire, cable insulator, insulation resistance
This study evaluated the insulation resistance characteristics of TFR-8 (Tray Frame Retardant power cable for fire service) and VCTF (Light PVC Sheathed Circular Cord) cables under external flame, over-current, and accelerated degradation tests. In the accelerated degradation test of the cable, aging times of 10, 20, 30, and 40 years were tested according to a temperature derived using the Arrhenius equation. The insulation resistance of the TFR-8 cables was reduced from a maximum of 7.5 T ohm to 0.008 T ohm during the flame contact and recovered to its original state after cooling. However, dielectric breakdown occurred in the VCTF cable during flame contact and the cable did not return to its original state, even after cooling. In the forced convection oven test, the insulation resistance of the cable was reduced at 160 °C, whereas the insulation resistance of the cable was reduced at 125 °C in the over-current test. This result implied that the over-current had a greater impact than... [more]
Preventive Maintenance and Forced Outages in Power Plants in Korea

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: duration of generators, forced outage rate, Korea, preventive maintenance, survival analysis
Maintaining high facility reliability in power plants is essential to secure long-term electricity supply. This paper applies the survival analysis to the actual unit level power generation data in Korea to estimate the relationship between facility reliability and the preventive maintenance. Duration of generators between forced outages is used to measure plant reliability. the empirical analysis shows that preventive maintenance cost, planned outage for maintenance, use rate, and reserve margin lead to the longer duration of generators and, in turn, the lower forced outage rates. We uncover that the marginal benefit of the preventive maintenance cost is decreasing at an increasing rate. It indicates that the marginal benefit of the “current” maintenance cost is minimal. Results in the paper imply that power plants in Korea might be spending unnecessarily high maintenance costs considering already having world’s lowest forced outage rates.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid RANS/LES, improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES), k-ω SSTLM, staggered pin-fin arrays, stress-blended eddy simulation (SBES)
In the present work, the three-dimensional heat and fluid flows around staggered pin-fin arrays are predicted using two hybrid RANS/LES models (an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) model and a stress-blended eddy simulation (SBES) model), and one transitional unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) model, called k-ω SSTLM. The periodic segment geometry with a total of nine pins is considered with a channel height of 2D and a distance of 2.5D between each pin. The corresponding Reynolds number based on the pin diameter and the maximum velocity between pins is 10,000. The two hybrid RANS/LES results show the superior prediction of the mean velocity profiles around the pins, pressure distributions on the pin wall, and Nusselt number distributions. However, the transitional model, k-ω SSTLM, shows large discrepancies except in front of the pins where the flow is not fully developed. The vortical structures are well resolved by the two hybrid RANS/LES models. The SB... [more]
Exergetic Evaluation of an Ethylene Refrigeration Cycle

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Exergy, process monitoring, refrigeration cycles
The production of light olefins by selective steam cracking is an energy-intensive process, and ethylene and propylene refrigeration cycles are key parts of it. The objective of this study was to identify opportunities for energy savings in an ethylene refrigeration cycle through an exergetic analysis. Two main causes of lower operational efficiency were identified: (1) Lower polytropic efficiency of the refrigerant compressor and (2) operating with the compressor mini-flow valve open to ensure reliability. The evaluation showed that the amount of irreversibilities generated by the cycle in operation is 22% higher than that predicted by the original design, which represents a 14% lower exergy efficiency. There is a potential savings of 0.20 MW in the cycle’s energy consumption with the implementation of the following improvements: recover refrigerant compressor efficiency by performing maintenance on the equipment and optimize the flow distribution between the recycle valve, the level... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuous market, discrete market, energy management system, energy trading, microgrids, Model Predictive Control, peer to peer, prosumers, stochastic
This article studies the exchange of self-produced renewable energy between prosumers (and with pure end consumers), through the discrete trading of energy packages and proposes a framework for optimizing this exchange. In order to mitigate the imbalances derived from discrepancies between production and consumption and their respective forecasts, the simultaneous continuous trading of instantaneous power quotas is proposed, giving rise to a time-ahead market running in parallel with a real-time one. An energy management system (EMS) based on stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) simultaneously determines the optimal bidding strategies for both markets, as well as the optimal utilisation of any energy storage system (ESS). Simulations carried out for a heterogeneous group of agents show that those with SMPC-EMS achieve savings of between 3% and 15% in their energy operation economic result. The proposed structures allows the peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading between end users with... [more]

Keywords: ANN-based predictive model, automated data filtering, density-based clustering, distributed energy generation
To realize the distributed generation and to make the partnership between the dispatchable units and variable renewable resources work efficiently, accurate and flexible monitoring needs to be implemented. Due to digital transformation in the energy industry, a large amount of data is and will be captured every day, but the inability to process them in real time challenges the conventional monitoring and maintenance practices. Access to automated and reliable data-filtering tools seems to be crucial for the monitoring of many distributed generation units, avoiding false warnings and improving the reliability. This study aims to evaluate a machine-learning-based methodology for autodetecting outliers from real data, exploring an interdisciplinary solution to replace the conventional manual approach that was very time-consuming and error-prone. The raw data used in this study was collected from experiments on a 100-kW micro gas turbine test rig in Norway. The proposed method uses Density... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mine, computational fluid dynamic, Computational Fluid Dynamics, FDS, fire dynamics simulator, gob fire, underground mine
A fire has been analyzed in a real underground coal mine, using a sublevel method, during an entire year. The study was focused on the collapsed area, reproducing a real mixture formed by coal, waste, and air gap. The analysis was done by means of an experimental analysis, a computational fuid dynamic model (CFD), and simulations using a mine ventilation software. Three scenarios were determined and studied regarding their influence on the evolution of the fire: (a) development of the fire without taking any action, (b) sealing off the affected areas, and (c) sealing and reducing the ventilation in the affected area and surrounding drifts. The study revealed the behavior of the fire in a real mine and the effectiveness of the main fire-fighting measures over time, verifying that none of the measures taken could eliminate the fire-induced in the collapsed area.

Keywords: Cauer network, foster network, junction temperature, least squares, thermal impedance
State-of-the-art methods for determining thermal impedance networks for IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) modules usually involves the establishment of the relationship between the measured transistor or diode voltage and temperature under homogenous temperature distribution across the IGBT module. The junction temperature is recomputed from the established voltage−temperature relationship and used in determining the thermal impedance network. This method requires accurate measurement of voltage drop across the transistors and diodes under specific designed heating and cooling profiles. Validation of the junction temperature is usually done using infrared camera or sensors placed close to the transistors or diodes (in some cases and open IGBT module) so that the measured temperature is as close to the junction as possible. In this paper, we propose an alternative method for determining the IGBT thermal impedance network using the principles of least squares. This method uses mea... [more]

Keywords: congestion management, dispatching, optimization methods, phase shifting transformers, power transmission planning, TSO coordination
The current European policy roadmap aims at forcing the TSOs to coordinate remedial actions used for relieving the congestions in the synchronous power system. In this paper, an optimization problem for coordinated congestion management is described and its results obtained for a real European use cases created in the H2020 EU-SysFlex project are presented. First of all, these results prove the feasibility of a central optimization problem for the coordination of the cross-border congestion management process. Next, the formulated optimization problem is used to tackle the issue of planning the investments in phase-shifting transformers (PSTs), for the purpose of increasing the efficiency/decreasing the cost of congestion management. Finally, this paper introduces two optimization-based indicators for pre-selecting the investment sites, which may be used to support the decision makers aiming at decreasing the costs of coordinated congestion management.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional switch, conversion efficiency, DC–DC converter, photovoltaic (PV), series resonance converter, wide range converter
This paper proposes a high gain DC−DC converter based on the series resonant converter (SRC) for photovoltaic (PV) applications. This study considers low power applications, where the resonant inductance is usually relatively small to reduce the cost of the converter realization, which results in low-quality factor values. On the other hand, these SRCs can be controlled at a fixed switching frequency. The proposed topology utilizes a bidirectional switch (AC switch) to regulate the input voltage in a wide range. This study shows that the existing topology with a bidirectional switch has a limited input voltage regulation range. To avoid this issue, the resonant tank is rearranged in the proposed converter to the resonance capacitor before the bidirectional switch. By this rearrangement, the dependence of the DC voltage gain on the duty cycle is changed, so the proposed converter requires a smaller duty cycle than that of the existing counterpart at the same gain. Theoretical analysis s... [more]

Keywords: allocation, energy curtailment, energy storages, MILP optimization, renewable energy sources, system modeling
This paper presents a comparison of the efficiency of energy storage and energy curtailment as an addition to the allocation of renewable energy in the distribution system in order to minimize development costs using a Mixed Integer-Linear Programming (MILP). Energy sources and energy storages are selected, sized and allocated under operational circumstances such as grid congestions and weather conditions. Loads and power units are modeled by daily consumption and generation profiles respectively, to reflect the intermittent character of renewable generation and consumption of energy. The optimization is carried out for a one-year time horizon using twenty-four representative days. The method is verified on three main simulation scenarios and three sub-scenarios for each of them, allowing for the comparison of the efficiency of each used tool. The main scenarios differ in their share of energy from renewable energy sources (RES) in total consumption. In the sub-scenarios, different too... [more]
