Development and Calibration of a Semianalytic Model for Shale Wells with Nonuniform Distribution of Induced Fractures Based on ES-MDA Method
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fractal theory, history matching, multistage fractured horizontal wells, semianalytic model, unconventional gas reservoirs
Given reliable parameters, a newly developed semianalytic model could offer an efficient option to predict the performance of the multi-fractured horizontal wells (MFHWs) in unconventional gas reservoirs. However, two major challenges come from the accurate description and significant parameters uncertainty of stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). The objective of this work is to develop and calibrate a semianalytic model using the ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation (ES-MDA) method for the uncertainty reduction in the description and forecasting of MFHWs with nonuniform distribution of induced fractures. The fractal dimensions of induced-fracture spacing (dfs) and aperture (dfa) and tortuosity index of induced-fracture system (θ) are included based on fractal theory to describe the properties of SRV region. Additionally, for shale gas reservoirs, gas transport mechanisms, e.g., viscous flow with slippage, Knudsen diffusion, and surface diffusion, among multi-media including... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioenergy scenario, biomasses, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, systematic review
This paper aims to provide a bibliometric analysis of publication trends on the themes of biomass and bioenergy worldwide. A wide range of studies have been performed in the field of the usage of biomass for energy production, in order to contribute to the green transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies. Over the past 20 years (from 2000 to 2019), approximately 10,000 articles have been published in the “Agricultural and Biological Sciences” field on this theme, covering all stages of production—from the harvesting of crops to the particular type of energy produced. Articles were obtained from the SCOPUS database and examined with a text mining tool in order to analyze publication trends over the last two decades. Publications per year in the bioenergy theme have grown from 91 in 2000 to 773 in 2019. In particular the analyses showed how environmental aspects have increased their importance (from 7.3% to 11.8%), along with studies related to crop conditions (from 10.4% to 18.6... [more]

The Influence of Groove Structure Parameters on the Maximum Flow Resistance of a Rectangular Narrow Channel
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow resistance, groove structure parameters, narrow channel, numerical simulation
In the hydraulically suspended passive shutdown assembly, in order to prevent the liquid suspension rod falling too fast and the outer tube from violent impact, it is necessary to study the way to increase flow resistance. This study added grooves to the wall of the narrow channel to increase its flow resistance. Using the RNG k-ε turbulence model in Fluent, the influence of the groove structure parameters and the Reynolds number on the flow resistance of the narrow channel was discussed to find the optimal groove structure parameters. The results showed that the flow resistance of the narrow channel increased with the increase in the concave−convex ratio, and when the concave−convex ratio was small, the flow resistance decreased with increased groove thickness, while when the concave−convex ratio exceeded a certain critical value, the flow resistance increased with increased groove thickness. Additionally, the growth rate slowed down when the concave−convex ratio was greater than 3:1.... [more]

Modelling Energy Distribution in Residential Areas: A Case Study Including Energy Storage Systems in Catania, Southern Italy
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: agent-based model, distribution patterns, energy exchanges, Energy Storage Systems, prosumers, urban energy distribution network
Complexity is a widely acknowledged feature of urban areas. Among the different levels to which this definition applies, the energy sector is one of the most representative of this way of conceiving cities. An evidence of this complexity can be detected in the growing impact of prosumers. Prosumers produce energy to meet their own demands, distribute it directly to neighbors and, eventually, store the energy neither consumed nor distributed. The modelling of distribution networks is a challenging task that requires ad hoc models to simulate the mutual energy exchanges occurring among prosumers. To serve at this scope, this paper proposes an agent-based model aiming at determining which operating conditions enhance the energy distribution among prosumers and diminish the supply from traditional power plants. An application of the model within a residential territory is then presented and simulations are conducted under two scenarios: the first investigating the distribution among prosum... [more]

Numerical Investigations of the Savonius Turbine with Deformable Blades
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blade load, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), deformable blades, fluid-structure interaction (FSI), power coefficient, Savonius turbine, vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT)
Savonius wind turbines are characterized by various advantages such as simple design, independence of wind direction, and low noise emission, but they suffer from low efficiency. Numerous investigations were carried out to face this problem. In the present paper, a new idea of the Savonius turbine with a variable geometry of blades is proposed. Its blades, made of elastic material, were continuously deformed during the rotor revolution to increase a positive torque of the advancing blade and to decrease a negative torque of the returning blade. In order to assess the turbine aerodynamic performance, a two-dimensional numerical model was developed. The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method was applied where blade deformations were defined by computational solid mechanics (CSM) simulations, whereas computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations allowed for transient flow prediction. The influence of the deformation magnitude and the position of maximally deformed blades with respect t... [more]

Induction Motor Adaptive Backstepping Control and Efficiency Optimization Based on Load Observer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: efficiency optimization, induction motor, load torque observer, optimal rotor flux, smooth switching
In this paper, an adaptive load torque observer based on backstepping control is designed, which achieves accurate load estimation where the load is unknown. Based on this, in order to reduce the loss of the motor at low load, a smooth switching strategy of rotor flux based on speed error is designed. According to the real-time speed error of the induction motor, the smooth switching strategy achieves dynamic flux switching. Firstly, when the uncertain load occurs for the first time in the recursive design, the adaptive law of the load is designed, and a novel adaptive load torque observer is obtained, which accurately estimates the uncertain load torque in real time. Secondly, the relationship between the loss and the rotor flux is established by analyzing the loss model of induction motor, and the optimal rotor flux is obtained. The smooth switching control strategy based on speed error is designed to realize the efficiency optimization of induction motor. Finally, the control strate... [more]

Online Modeling of a Fuel Cell System for an Energy Management Strategy Design
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control strategy, hybrid vehicle, Kalman filter, maximum power point tracker, metaheuristic optimization, online parameters estimation, power management, semiempirical modeling
An energy management strategy (EMS) efficiently splits the power among different sources in a hybrid fuel cell vehicle (HFCV). Most of the existing EMSs are based on static maps while a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has time-varying characteristics, which can cause mismanagement in the operation of a HFCV. This paper proposes a framework for the online parameters identification of a PMEFC model while the vehicle is under operation. This identification process can be conveniently integrated into an EMS loop, regardless of the EMS type. To do so, Kalman filter (KF) is utilized to extract the parameters of a PEMFC model online. Unlike the other similar papers, special attention is given to the initialization of KF in this work. In this regard, an optimization algorithm, shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (SFLA), is employed for the initialization of the KF. The SFLA is first used offline to find the right initial values for the PEMFC model parameters using the available polariza... [more]

Energy Efficiency of Pneumatic Cylinder Control with Different Levels of Compressed Air Pressure and Clamping Cartridge
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: clamping, control, cylinder, Energy Efficiency, pneumatics
Since pneumatic systems are widely used in various branches of industry, the need to find ways to reduce energy consumption in these systems has become very pressing. The reduction in energy consumption in these systems is reflected in the reduction of compressed air consumption. The paper presents a cylinder control system with a piston rod on one side, in which the reduction in energy consumption is ensured by using different levels of supply pressure in the working and the return stroke, and by holding the cylinder piston rod in its final positions with a clamping cartridge. Clamping and holding the piston rod in its final position further affects the reduction in energy consumption. Experimental data show that the application of the proposed control leads to a decrease in compressed air consumption of 25.54% to 32.97%, depending on the compressed air pressure used in the return stroke. The cost-effectiveness of the proposed cylinder control with different levels of compressed air p... [more]

Computational Methods for Modelling and Optimization of Flow Control Devices
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, flow control, Gurney flap, vortex generators, wind turbine
Over the last few years, the advances in size and weight for wind turbines have led to the development of flow control devices. The current work presents an innovative method to model flow control devices based on a cell-set model, such as Gurney flaps (GFs). This model reuses the cells which are around the required geometry and a wall boundary condition is assigned to the generated region. Numerical simulations based on RANS equations and with Re = 2 × 10 6 have been performed. Firstly, a performance study of the cell-set model on GFs was carried out by comparing it with a fully mesh model of a DU91W250 airfoil. A global relative error of 1.13% was calculated. Secondly, optimum GF lengths were determined (from 0% to 2% of c) for a DU97W300 airfoil and an application of them. The results showed that for lower angles of attack (AoAs) larger GFs were needed, and as the AoA increased, the optimum GF length value decreased. Keywords: economic feasibility analysis, large-scale grid-connected, Libya, NASA database, PV technologies, small-scale grid-connected, solar potential, wind potential
The current study is focused on the economic and financial assessments of solar and wind power potential for nine selected regions in Libya for the first time. As the existing meteorological data, including wind speed and global solar radiation, are extremely limited due to the civil war in the country, it was therefore decided to use the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) database as a source of meteorological information to assess the wind and solar potential. The results showed that the country has huge solar energy potential compared to wind energy potential. Additionally, it is found that Al Kufrah is a suitable region for the future installation of the Photovoltaic (PV) power plant due to high annual solar radiation. Based on the actual wind speed analysis, Benghazi and Dernah are the best regions for large-scale wind farm installation in the future taking into account existing meteorological data limitations. Fluidised Bed Gasification of Diverse Biomass Feedstocks and Blends—An Overall Performance Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: agglomeration, Biomass, blend, defluidisation, gasification
The aim of this work is to investigate the fluidised bed gasification of several pure and blended feedstock prepared in the form of pellets: oak bark, two bark/wheat straw blends (85/15 and 50/50 wt%) and lignin residue remaining from bioethanol production. Gasification conditions were defined to be representative of dual fluidised bed ones (steam gasification at 850 °C, followed by air combustion of the char). The cold gas efficiency (77−81%), gas composition and tar content (0.9−2.3 g/kgdaf) are close for the gasification of bark and the two bark/wheat straw blends. For lignin residue, the cold gas efficiency is lower (71%), and the tar content is 9.1 g/kgdaf. The agglomeration propensity is much higher for lignin residue than for the other feedstock. This was put into evidence with in-bed temperature measurements at different levels, and confirmed with post-test size screening of the bed material particles. The 50/50 wt% bark/wheat straw blend seems to undergo defluidisation in comb... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: directional connectedness, implied volatility, realized volatility, renewable energy markets
This paper examines the dynamics of connectedness among the realized volatility indices of 16 clean energy stocks belonging to the SPGCE and the implied volatility indices of two important stock markets—the S&P 500 and the STOXX50—and two commodities markets—the crude oil and gold markets. The empirical results show a unidirectional connectedness from the implied volatility indices to the clean energy stocks. Our analysis further reveals similar volatility connectedness behaviors among companies in the same energy production subsector. However, there exists heterogeneous behavior between different energy production subsectors over time. Further, we identify pairwise directional connectedness clusters among related companies, indicating that there are few possibilities for portfolio diversification within the energy production subsectors. Finally, through an impulse−response analysis, we confirm that the expectation of future market volatility of the S&P 500 index and the gold price pla... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: single-phase flow, threshold pressure gradient, two-phase flow, variation
A study on the seepage characteristics and laws of nano-micron pore throat in a low permeable reservoir matrix is of great significance for promoting high efficacy of low permeable reservoirs. Threshold pressure gradient (TPG) is an essential factor to reflect the seepage law. Here, variation laws of TPG and its influencing factors of low reservoir fluid are analyzed systematically through physical simulation experiment. Throat diameter distribution of cores was measured by a mercury injection method, and it was found that with the decrease of pore throat median diameter, TPG increase appeared slowly first and fast afterwards. The patterns of the TPG with permeability in water and oil were compared. Results showed that the TPG versus permeability gave power functions in a form and the TPG in oil was more than two times larger than that of water. Besides, TPG in two-phase flow was investigated by the stabilization method. Tests revealed that the higher the oil saturation, the greater th... [more]

Metamodeling for Uncertainty Quantification of a Flood Wave Model for Concrete Dam Breaks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dam-break flood, global sensitivity analysis, metamodeling, polynomial chaos expansion, risk assessment, uncertainty quantification
Uncertainties in instantaneous dam-break floods are difficult to assess with standard methods (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation) because of the lack of historical observations and high computational costs of the numerical models. In this study, polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) was applied to a dam-break flood model reflecting the population of large concrete dams in Switzerland. The flood model was approximated with a metamodel and uncertainty in the inputs was propagated to the flow quantities downstream of the dam. The study demonstrates that the application of metamodeling for uncertainty quantification in dam-break studies allows for reduced computational costs compared to standard methods. Finally, Sobol’ sensitivity indices indicate that reservoir volume, length of the valley, and surface roughness contributed most to the variability of the outputs. The proposed methodology, when applied to similar studies in flood risk assessment, allows for more generalized risk quantification than... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, excitation and demagnetization processes, multiport power source circuit, output torque, photovoltaic aircraft, switched reluctance motors
In order to meet the working requirements of high performance and low cost for a photovoltaic (PV) aircraft driven by switched reluctance motors (SRMs), a multiport driving topology (MDT) is proposed. The converter is composed of an asymmetric half-bridge and a multiport power source circuit. Three driving and two charging modes can be realized through simple control of the switches. The output torque and the efficiency of the system are improved, because the excitation and demagnetization processes are accelerated by increasing the commutation voltage. The battery pack can be self-charged when the system is running, and PV panels can be used to charge the battery pack to reduce energy consumption when the system is stationary. The simulation analysis and the experimental verification on an 8/6 SRM confirm the effectiveness of the MFT proposed in this paper.

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: crude oil market, expected shortfall, portfolio management, risk management, value-at-risk, wavelet transform
We propose the use of wavelet-based semiparametric models for forecasting the value-at-risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) in the crude oil market. We compared the forecast outcomes across different time scales for three semiparametric models, three nonparametric, distribution-based, generalized, autoregressive, conditional, heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models, and three rolling-window models. We found that the GARCH model estimated by the Fissler and Ziegel (FZ) zero loss minimization (GARCH-FZ) model performs the best at forecasting the VaR and ES in the short term, whereas the hybrid model performs the best for mid- and long-term time scales. Thus, long-term investors should consider the hybrid model and short-term investors should employ the GARCH-FZ model in their risk management processes. Overall, our proposed wavelet-based semiparametric models outperform the other models tested for all time scales and market conditions. As such, we suggest that these models are considered for... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system, lithium-ion batteries, photovoltaics, silicon solar cell, step-up converter
In recent years, a great importance has been given to hybrid systems of energy generators and energy storages. This article presents the results of our research aimed at checking the possibility of connecting a photovoltaic (PV) module and a lithium-ion battery (LIB), using a simplified control module towards a cheap and efficient system. The photovoltaic modules based on crystalline silicon solar cells, tempered glass as the front layer and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer as encapsulation material are the most popular type in the industry. The disadvantage of such module type is the high weight of about 15 kg/m2. The weight of PV module used in the presented energy storage system is twice as small. This new type of PV module is based on treated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as back sheet; high transparent foil as front sheet. Changing glass layer to PMMA requires additional modification of the lamination process parameters and EVA polymer type. For this reason, an EVA polyme... [more]

The problem of extracting maximum power from a photovoltaic (PV) system with negligible power loss is concerned with the power generating capability of the PV array and nature of the output load. Changing weather conditions and nonlinear behavior of PV systems pose a challenge in tracking of varying maximum power point. A robust nonlinear controller is required to ensure maximum power point tracking (MPPT) by handling nonlinearities of a system and making it robust against changing environmental conditions. Sliding mode controller is robust against disturbances, model uncertainties and parametric variations. It depicts undesirable phenomenon like chattering, inherent in it causing power and heat losses. In this paper, a supertwisting sliding mode algorithm based nonlinear robust controller has been designed for MPPT of a PV system which not only removes the chattering but also enhances the overall system’s dynamic response.
