Optimization of the Solidification Method of High-Level Waste for Increasing the Thermal Stability of the Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Compound
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cesium, ferrocyanide K-Ni, immobilization, magnesium potassium phosphate compound, mordenite, radioactive waste, silicotungstic acid, sorption, thermal stability, zeolite
The key task in the solidification of high-level waste (HLW) into a magnesium potassium phosphate (MPP) compound is the immobilization of mobile cesium isotopes, the activity of which provides the main contribution to the total HLW activity. In addition, the obtained compound containing heat-generating radionuclides can be significantly heated, which increases the necessity of its thermal stability. The current work is aimed at assessing the impact of various methodological approaches to HLW solidification on the thermal stability of the MPP compound, which is evaluated by the mechanical strength of the compound and its resistance to cesium leaching. High-salt surrogate HLW solution (S-HLW) used in the investigation was prepared for solidification by adding sorbents of various types binding at least 93% of 137Cs: ferrocyanide K-Ni (FKN), natural zeolite (NZ), synthetic zeolite Na-mordenite (MOR), and silicotungstic acid (STA). Prepared S-HLW was solidified into the MPP compound. Wollas... [more]

Analysis and Design of a Double Fuzzy PI Controller of a Voltage Outer Loop in a Reversible Three-Phase PWM Converter
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: auxiliary correction of the PI parameters, double fuzzy PI controller, reversible three-phase PWM converter
Aiming at the application of a reversible three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) converter with a wide range of AC side voltage and DC side voltage, a double fuzzy proportional integral (PI) controller for voltage outer loop was proposed. The structures of the proposed controller were motivated by the problems that either the traditional PI controller or single fuzzy PI controller cannot achieve high performance in a wide range of AC and DC voltage conditions. The presented double fuzzy controller studied in this paper is a sub fuzzy controller in addition to the traditional fuzzy PI controller; in particular, the sub fuzzy controller can get the auxiliary correction of PI control parameters according to the AC side voltage and the DC side given voltage variation of PWM converter after the reasoning of the sub fuzzy controller, while the traditional fuzzy PI controller outputs the correction of PI control parameters according to the DC voltage error and its error change rate. Energy Demand Management and Social Norms
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: choice experiment, demand-side management, electricity, social norms, willingness to accept
The main objective of our study was investigating the impact of norms and financial motivation on the disutility of energy management for Polish households. We analyzed consumer preferences and willingness to accept demand-side management (DSM) programs. Choice experiment was applied for electricity contracts including external control of electricity consumption. Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior provided the theoretical framework of the study, which tested hypotheses about the impact of social norms on consumer choices of electricity contracts. We show that people with higher descriptive social norms about electricity consumption are less sensitive to the level of compensation and more responsive to the number of blackouts. People willing to sign a contract for financial reasons were less sensitive to the external control of electricity consumption and less inclined toward the status quo option. Injunctive social norms and personal norms had a non-significant impact on consumer decis... [more]

A Novel Strategy to Reduce Computational Burden of the Stochastic Security Constrained Unit Commitment Problem
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: power system optimization, progressive hedging algorithm, Security-Constraint Unit Commitment
The uncertainty related to the massive integration of intermittent energy sources (e.g., wind and solar generation) is one of the biggest challenges for the economic, safe and reliable operation of current power systems. One way to tackle this challenge is through a stochastic security constraint unit commitment (SSCUC) model. However, the SSCUC is a mixed-integer linear programming problem with high computational and dimensional complexity in large-scale power systems. This feature hinders the reaction times required for decision making to ensure a proper operation of the system. As an alternative, this paper presents a joint strategy to efficiently solve a SSCUC model. The solution strategy combines the use of linear sensitivity factors (LSF) to compute power flows in a quick and reliable way and a method, which dynamically identifies and adds as user cuts those active security constraints N − 1 that establish the feasible region of the model. These two components are embedde... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer fluids, non-uniform heating, Nusselt number, parabolic solar trough collectors, Rankine cycle, solar thermal power plant, thermal and hydraulic performance
Changing the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a viable approach to study the corresponding effect on the thermal and hydraulic performances of parabolic trough collectors (PTC). Three categorized-types of pure fluids are used in this study; water, Therminol® VP-1 and molten salt. The parametric comparison between pure fluids is also studied considering the effect of various inlet fluid temperatures and different Reynolds ( R e ) numbers on the thermal performance. Two low-Reynolds turbulence models are used; Launder and Sharma (LS) k-epsilon and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-omega models. In order to assess the performance of each fluid, a number of parameters are analyzed including average Nusselt ( N u ) number, specific pressure drop distributions, thermal losses, thermal stresses and overall thermal efficiency of the PTC system. Results confirmed that changing the working fluid in the PTC enhances the overall heat transfer thereby improving thermal efficiency. For a temper... [more]

An Efficient Robust Predictive Control of Main Steam Temperature of Coal-Fired Power Plant
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coal-fired power plant, energy system control, explicit model predictive control, robust model predictive control, uncertain model
Regulating performance of the main steam temperature (MST) system concerns the economy and safety of the coal-fired power plant (CFPP). This paper develops an offset-free offline robust model predictive control (RMPC) strategy for the MST system of CFPP. Zonotope-type uncertain model is utilized as the prediction model in the proposed RMPC design owing to its features of higher accuracy, compactness of representation and less complexity. An offline RMPC aiming at the system robustness and computational efficiency is then developed to maintain the desired steam temperature in case of wide operating condition change. The proposed RMPC is realized by two stages: in the first stage, the RMPC law set, which is the piecewise affine (PWA) of the MST system state is designed offline; then in the second stage, the explicit control law is selected online according to the current state. To achieve an offset-free tracking performance, a manipulated variable target observer is employed to update th... [more]

Geometrical and Topological Analysis of Pore Space in Sandstones Based on X-ray Computed Tomography
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: digital rock physics, geometrical analysis, porosity, sandstone, topological analysis
The pore geometry and topology properties of pore space in rocks are significant for a better understanding of the complex hydrologic and elastic properties. However, geometry and topology information about the sandstone pore structures is not fully available. In this study, we obtained the topological and geometrical pore parameters from a representative elementary volume (REV) for fluid flow in sandstone samples. For comparison, eight types of sandstones with various porosities were studied based on the X-ray micro-computed tomography technique. In this study, the REV size was selected based on the parameters from the respective pore network models (PNM), not just the porosity. Our analysis indicates that despite different porosity, all the sandstone samples have highly triangular-shaped pores and a high degree of pore structural isotropy. The high porosity group sandstones exhibit wider ranges of pore sizes than the low porosity group sandstones. Compared to the high porosity group... [more]

A Canopen-Based Gateway and Energy Monitoring System for Electric Bicycles
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CAN bus, CANopen, e-bike, energy monitoring, EnergyBus, gateway
The limitation of battery capacity is a cause of range anxiety that reduces the wide use of electric bicycles (e-bikes). Therefore, many works have developed systems that provide assistance to cyclists to deal with the range anxiety problem. However, these systems may have limited applications since they can only work with the e-bike manufacturers’ hardware and communication protocols. This paper proposes an energy monitoring system (EMS) for e-bikes, which is based on EnergyBus, a standardized hardware and communication protocol for e-bikes. EnergyBus standard is based on controller area network (CAN) bus and CANopen protocols. EMS comprises a gateway connected to EnergyBus of e-bike and an EMS application installed on a smart device that connects to the gateway via Bluetooth. The gateway provides CAN bus monitoring and CANopen device data access services to the smart device. These services are modeled to determine gateway parameters to ensure the efficient performance of the gateway... [more]

Energy Supply Preferences as Multicriteria Decision Problems: Developing a System of Criteria from Survey Data
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: analytic network process, energy preferences, multi-criteria decision model, survey
Decision support techniques have a key role in investment and strategic decisions in the energy sector. As complex decision-making problems involve the simultaneous consideration of an extensive set of different factors, it is an essential part of the methodology to define, structure, and integrate the criteria. The main purpose of the study was to develop a system of criteria and weights that are suitable for general application in the energy sector and can best describe the decision-making mechanisms present in society and various social groups. When developing the system of criteria, we moved away from the hierarchical approach related to the three pillars of sustainability; therefore, a wide range of notions were assessed based on a population representative survey data collected in Hungary. We used algebraic methods to explore the internal structure of the set of criteria that had been previously defined by means of social sciences, while the importance weights were specified by a... A Novel Market Clearing and Safety Checking Method for Multi-Type Units That Considers Flexible Loads
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flexible loads, interior point method, market clearing, safety checking
Flexible loads have flexibility and variability in time and space, and they have been widely studied by scholars. However, the research on the participation of flexible loads in market clearing and safety checking is still insufficient. We propose a market clearing and safety checking method for multi-type units that considers flexible loads. First, the flexible load is divided into reducible loads, shiftable loads, and convertible loads, and its mathematical model is established. Then, the convertible loads are considered in the market clearing model, and the power management agency executes the market clearing procedure to obtain the clearing result. When the line power exceeds the limit as a result of clearing, the power flow of the branches and sections is eliminated by adjusting the unit output and reducing the flexible load at the same time, and a safety checking model considering load reduction is established. The marginal electricity price of the nodes is obtained by the interi... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biogas, energy recovery, food waste, green waste, organic waste, process control
The replacement of fossil fuel with renewable energy sources seems as though it will be crucial in the future. On the other hand, waste generation increases year by year. Thus, waste-to-energy technologies fit in with the actual trends, such as the circular economy. The crucial type of generated waste is municipal solid waste, which is in the research area. Regarding the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), anaerobic digestion (AD) allows the recovery of biogas and energy. Furthermore, if it is supported by source segregation, it should allow the recovery of material as fertilizer. The AD process performance (biogas yield and stability) comparison of source-segregated OFMSW (ss-OFMWS) and mechanically sorted OFMSW (ms-OFMSW) as feedstocks was performed in full-scale conditions. The daily biogas volume and methane content were measured to assess AD efficiency. Multiphase PMSM with Asymmetric Windings for Electric Drive
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: asymmetric winding, efficiency improvement, electric drive system, multiphase motor, PMSM
Multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely utilized in high power and high reliability electric propulsion systems. In electric propulsion systems, the motor may work at a low efficiency area for a long time, which increases energy consumption and reduces cruise range. In order to improve motor efficiency, this paper proposes a multiphase motor structure. The stator winding of proposed motor consists of three independent windings that have different rated speed and torque. In this paper, winding match mode, operation characteristic and efficiency characteristic are analyzed, and a torque distribution strategy with optimal efficiency is given. The results show that in propeller load such as electric aircrafts and ships, the proposed motor can reduce motor total loss and temperature rise in a drive cycle, which improves system efficiency, reliability and fault tolerance performance.

Influence of the Ammonium Nitrate(V) Porous Prill Assortments and Absorption Index on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil Blasting Properties
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ammonium nitrate, ANFO, morphology, post-blast fumes, thermal stability, VOD
Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) samples, which were obtained by blending two different types of ammonium nitrate porous prills (i.e., AN-PP7 and AN-PP8) with fuel oil (FO) were studied. Measurements of structure, crystallinity and morphology were performed using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. From the SEM analysis, it was indicated that a “wrinkled” structure characterized the crystal surface of the samples, which were based on two types of ammonium nitrate porous prill. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) confirmed that AN-PP7 had a higher absorption index in comparison to AN-PP8. Furthermore, it was shown that continuous AN phase transformations at precise temperatures took place. From the blasting test, it was indicated that the absorption index only had an influence on the content of toxic fumes. However, the velocity of detonation (VOD) depended solely on the ANFO den... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building simulation, cold climate, hot climate, mixed climate, occupancy sensor, occupancy-based control, variable-air-volume system
Variable-air-volume (VAV) systems are used in many office buildings. The minimum airflow rate setting of VAV terminal boxes has a significant impact on both energy consumption and indoor air quality. Conventional controls usually have the terminal’s minimum airflow rate at a constant (e.g., 30% or more of the terminal design airflow rate), irrespective of the occupancy status, which may cause problems, such as excessive simultaneous heating and cooling, under ventilation, and thermal comfort issues. This paper examines the potential of energy savings from occupancy-based controls (OBCs). The sensed occupancy information, either occupant presence or people count, is used to determine the airflow rate of terminal boxes, the thermostat setpoints, and the lighting control.
