Far-Field Maximal Power Absorption of a Bulging Cylindrical Wave Energy Converter
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fluid-structure interaction, marine renewable energy, Wave Energy
The maximal power that is absorbed by a wave energy converter can be estimated from the far-field behavior of the waves that are radiated by the device. For realistic estimates, constraints must be used to enforce restrictions on the set of admissible motions when deriving the maximal absorption width. This work is dedicated to the numerical computation of the maximal absorption width under constraints for devices with several non-trivial degrees of freedom. In particular, the method is applied to a model of SBM Offshore’s S3 wave energy converter, a bulging horizontal cylinder. The results are compared with a more classical approach, which consists of computing the linear dynamic response of the wave energy converter interacting with the waves. The far-field maximal absorption width can be seen as an upper bound to evaluate what would be the power captured by a perfect control strategy. The method also shows that the absorption width of the S3 wave energy converter is larger for wavel... [more]

Numerical Investigation of Top-Coal Migration in the First Coal-Drawing Process by an FDM−DEM Coupling Method
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FDM–DEM numerical model, first coal-drawing, top-coal caving mining, weight of top-coal blocks
In Longwall Top-Coal Caving (LTCC), the shape of the loose body (LB) and top-coal boundary (TCB) formed after the first coal-drawing are the initial conditions for the common coal-drawing period. Taking the Panel 12309 in Wangjialing coal mine as the research object, the weight of the blocks of caved top coal was measured on-site, and the distribution of their equivalent diameter was calculated. By using a coupled numerical method, the “Finite difference method (FDM)−Discrete element method (DEM)” numerical model was established, and the evolutions of the drawing body (DB), LB, and TCB were obtained. The results show that, in the initial stage of first coal-drawing (0−8.09 s), the amount of DB reached its maximum of 7.18 m3 (0.89 m3/s) and then decreased to a stable value of 0.44 m3/s. The relationships between the characteristic parameters of DB, LB, and TCB and the drawing time were fitted. Taking the second derivative of each parameter with respect to time as its sensitivity (η), it... [more]

A New Bi-Level Optimisation Framework for Optimising a Multi-Mode Wave Energy Converter Design: A Case Study for the Marettimo Island, Mediterranean Sea
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bi-level optimisation method, evolutionary algorithms, geometric parameters, levelised cost of energy, power take-off, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wave energy converter
To advance commercialisation of ocean wave energy and for the technology to become competitive with other sources of renewable energy, the cost of wave energy harvesting should be significantly reduced. The Mediterranean Sea is a region with a relatively low wave energy potential, but due to the absence of extreme waves, can be considered at the initial stage of the prototype development as a proof of concept. In this study, we focus on the optimisation of a multi-mode wave energy converter inspired by the CETO system to be tested in the west of Sicily, Italy. We develop a computationally efficient spectral-domain model that fully captures the nonlinear dynamics of a wave energy converter (WEC). We consider two different objective functions for the purpose of optimising a WEC: (1) maximise the annual average power output (with no concern for WEC cost), and (2) minimise the levelised cost of energy (LCoE). We develop a new bi-level optimisation framework to simultaneously optimise the W... [more]

Hydrocracking of a Heavy Vacuum Gas Oil with Fischer−Tropsch Wax
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, co-processing, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, hydrocracking
Catalytic hydrocracking represents an optimal process for both heavy petroleum fractions and Fischer−Tropsch (FT) wax upgrading because it offers high flexibility regarding the feedstock, reaction conditions and products’ quality. The hydrocracking of a heavy vacuum gas oil with FT wax was carried out in a continuous-flow catalytic unit with a fixed-bed reactor and a co-current flow of the feedstock and hydrogen at the reaction temperatures of 390, 400 and 410 °C and a pressure of 8 MPa. The increasing reaction temperature and content of the FT wax in the feedstock caused an increasing yield in the gaseous products and a decreasing yield in the liquid products. The utilisation of the higher reaction temperatures and feedstocks containing the FT wax showed a positive influence on the conversion of the fraction boiling above 400 °C to lighter fractions. Although the naphtha and middle distillate fractions obtained via atmospheric and vacuum distillations of the liquid products of hydrocr... [more]

Integration of Large-Scale Variable Renewable Energy Sources into the Future European Power System: On the Curtailment Challenge
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dispatch model, integration, load shifting, power system, renewable curtailments, renewables, transmission grid
The future European power system is projected to rely heavily on variable renewable energy sources (VRES), primarily wind and solar generation. However, the difficulties inherent to storing the primary energy of these sources is expected to pose significant challenges in terms of their integration into the system. To account for the high variability of renewable energy sources VRES, a novel pan-European dispatch model with high spatio-temporal resolution including load shifting is introduced here, providing highly detailed information regarding renewable energy curtailments for all Europe, typically underestimated in studies of future systems. which also includes modeling of load shifting. The model consists of four separate levels with different approaches for modeling thermal generation flexibility, storage units and demand as well as with spatial resolutions and generation dispatch formulations. Applying the developed model for the future European power system follows the results of... [more]

The Energy and Exergy of Light with Application to Societal Exergy Analysis
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, Exergy, illumination, light, lumen, luminous efficacy, radiation, spectrum, thermodynamics
Lighting provides an indispensable energy service, illumination. The field of societal exergy analysis considers light (and many other energy products) to be enablers of economic growth, and lighting contributes a non-negligible proportion of total useful exergy supplied to modern economies. In societal exergy analysis, the exergetic efficiency of electric lamps is central to determining the exergy contribution of lighting to an economy. Conventionally, societal exergy practitioners estimate the exergetic efficiency of lamps by an energy efficiency, causing confusion and, sometimes, overestimation of exergetic efficiency by a factor as large as 3. In response, we use recent results from the fields of radiation thermodynamics and photometry to develop an exact method for calculating the exergy of light and the exergetic efficiency of lamps. The exact method (a) is free of any assumptions for the value of the maximum luminous efficacy, (b) uses a non-unity spectral exergy-to-energy ratio... [more]

Impact of DSM on Energy Management in a Single-Family House with a Heat Pump and Photovoltaic Installation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand-side management, Energy Storage, heat pump
This article presents a case study of a single-family house, whose current energy source is electricity only. Nine years ago, the heat source for the heating system and domestic hot water was an oil boiler, which was changed to an air−water heat pump. Four years ago, when Poland formed the basis of the prosumer market, the first photovoltaic system was established. It was expanded in the following years. In this work are presented the impact of using a heat accumulator on the coefficient of performance of the heat pump, the self-consumption of energy from the photovoltaic system, and the cost of purchasing energy. Comparative calculations were made, with the demand-side management (DSM) active on work days, and on free days (weekends and public holidays) it was not. Attention was paid to the self-consumption factor depending on the algorithms used in an energy meter. The prosumer market in Poland was also described. The calculations described the house as having an annual energy self-c... [more]

Application of the Homotopy Method for Fractional Inverse Stefan Problem
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fractional derivative, heat transfer, inverse problem, inverse Stefan problem, solidification
The paper presents an application of the homotopy analysis method for solving the one-phase fractional inverse Stefan design problem. The problem was to determine the temperature distribution in the domain and functions describing the temperature and the heat flux on one of the considered area boundaries. It was demonstrated that if the series constructed for the method is convergent then its sum is a solution of the considered equation. The sufficient condition of this convergence was also presented as well as the error of the approximate solution estimation. The paper also includes the example presenting the application of the described method. The obtained results show the usefulness of the proposed method. The method is stable for the input data disturbances and converges quickly. The big advantage of this method is the fact that it does not require discretization of the area and the solution is a continuous function.

Optimization Design of Rib Width and Performance Analysis of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical expression, multi-physics, optimal rib/pitch ratio, parameters sensitivity, solid oxide electrolysis cell
Structure design is of great value for the performance improvement of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) to diminish the gap between scientific research and industrial application. A comprehensive multi-physics coupled model is constructed to conduct parameter sensitivity analysis to reveal the primary and secondary factors on the SOEC performance and optimal rib width. It is found that the parameters of the O2 electrode have almost no influence on the optimal rib width at the H2 electrode side and vice versa. The optimized rib width is not sensitive to the electrode porosity, thickness, electrical conductivity and gas composition. The optimal rib width at the H2 electrode side is sensitive to the contact resistance at the interface between the electrode and interconnect rib, while the extremely small concentration loss at the O2 electrode leads to the insensitivity of optimal rib width to the parameters influencing the O2 diffusion. In addition to the contact resistance, the appli... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC-DC converters, multi-port dual-active bridge (DAB) converter, power converter, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, wide-band-gap (WBG) semiconductors
With the introduction of the more electric aircraft, there is growing emphasis on improving overall efficiency and thus gravimetric and volumetric power density, as well as smart functionalities and safety of an aircraft. In future on-board power distribution networks, so-called high voltage DC (HVDC, typically +/−270VDC) supplies will be introduced to facilitate distribution and reduce the associated mass and volume, including harness. Future aircraft power distribution systems will also very likely include energy storage devices (probably, batteries) for emergency back up and engine starting. Correspondingly, novel DC-DC conversion solutions are required, which can interface the traditional low voltage (28 V) DC bus with the new 270 V one. Such solutions presently need to cater for a significant degree of flexibility in their power ratings, power transfer capability and number of inputs/outputs. Specifically, multi-port power-scalable bi-directional converters are required. This pape... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high voltage ride-through (HVRT), low voltage ride-through (LVRT), permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), wind energy conversion system (WECS)
Various challenges are acknowledged in practical cases with high wind power penetration. Fault ride-through (FRT) capability has become the most dominant grid integration requirements for the wind energy conversion system worldwide. The high voltage ride-through (HVRT) and low voltage ride-through (LVRT) performance play a vital role in the grid-friendly integration into the system. In this paper, a coordinated HVRT and LVRT control strategy is proposed to enhance the FRT capability of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine generators (WTG). A dual-mode chopper protection is developed to avoid DC-link overvoltage, and a deadband protection is proposed to prevent oscillations under edge voltage conditions. The proposed strategy can ride through different levels of voltage sags or swells and provide auxiliary dynamic reactive power support simultaneously. Time-Frequency Image Analysis and Transfer Learning for Capacity Prediction of Lithium-Ion Batteries
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity prediction, continuous wavelet transform (CWT), lithium-ion battery, state of health estimation, time–frequency image analysis
Energy storage is recognized as a key technology for enabling the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future. Energy storage requires careful management, and capacity prediction of a lithium-ion battery (LIB) is an essential indicator in a battery management system for Electric Vehicles and Electricity Grid Management. However, present techniques for capacity prediction rely mainly on the quality of the features extracted from measured signals under strict operating conditions. To improve flexibility and accuracy, this paper introduces a new paradigm based on a multi-domain features time-frequency image (TFI) analysis and transfer deep learning algorithm, in order to extract diagnostic characteristics on the degradation inside the LIB. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is used to transfer the one-dimensional (1D) terminal voltage signals of the battery into 2D images (i.e., wavelet energy concentration). The generated TFIs are fed into the 2D deep learning algorithms to extract th... [more]

Comparison between Inflexible and Flexible Charging of Electric Vehicles—A Study from the Perspective of an Aggregator
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery degradation, electric vehicles, electric vehicles aggregator, electricity markets, stochastic programming
This paper is about the problem of the management of an aggregator of electric vehicles participating in an electricity market environment. The problem consists in the maximization of the expected profit through a formulation given by a stochastic programming problem to consider the uncertainty faced by the aggregator. This uncertainty is due to the day-ahead market prices and the driving requirements of the owners of the vehicles. Depending on the consent of the owners, inflexible charging to flexible charging is considered. Thus, the aggregator can propose different profiles and charging periods to the owners of electric vehicles. Qualitatively, as expected, the more flexible the vehicle owners, the higher the expected profit. The formulation, however, offers more to the aggregator and provides the ability to quantify the influence of consent of favorable driving requirements in the expected profit, allowing the aggregator to consider rewarding the owners of vehicles with more flexib... Explicit Multipole Formula for the Local Thermal Resistance in an Energy Pile—The Line-Source Approximation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy piles, ground source heat pump (GSHP), local thermal resistance, minimum thermal resistance, multipole method, pile foundations, thermal piles
This paper presents a closed-form quite handy formula for the local thermal resistance Rb between the temperature of the bulk heat-carrier fluid in the pipes, equally spaced on a concentric circle inside a circular energy pile, and the mean temperature at the periphery of the pile. The so-called multipole method is used to calculate the temperature field. An important improvement of the multipole method is presented, where Cauchy’s mean value theorem of analytical functions is used. The formula for thermal resistance Rb0 for the zero-order approximation (J = 0), where only line heat sources at the pipes are used, is presented. The errors using zeroth-order approximation (J = 0) are shown to be quite small by comparisons with eight-order approximation (J = 8) with its accuracy of more than eight digits. The relative error for the local thermal resistance Rb0 for the zero-order approximation (J = 0) lies below 5% for a wide range of input parameter values. These ranges are judged to cove... [more]

Standardized Comparison of 40 Local Driving Cycles: Energy and Kinematics
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: average speed, characteristic parameters, driving cycles, energy consumption, fuel economy
Local driving cycles (LDCs) capture local traffic characteristics, while standard driving cycles (SDCs) compare vehicles in distinct regions. There is a plethora of LDCs, raising the question as to how distinct they are. To quantify it, we first organized a collection of 77 LDCs. From the speed—time images, it was possible to extract numerical vectors of 40 cycles in a standardized way. Comparing the LDCs developed for cars, we found that their parameters fluctuate significantly: the average speed varies from 14.7 to 44.7 km/h, and the fuel economy varies from 10.8 to 20.5 km/L. Comparing the LDCs with FTP-75 cycle, the difference in speed is 7 km/h, and in fuel economy is 1.5 km/L. For WLTC, the difference is 19.4 km/h and 3 km/L, respectively. Thus, given the deviations found between the analyzed LDCs, and between LDCs and SDCs, the numerical results reinforce the relevance of using LDCs for each region.

Thermal gas meters represent a promising technology for billing customers for gaseous fuels, however, it is essential to ensure that measurement accuracy is maintained in the long term and in a broad range of operating conditions. The effect of hydrogen addition to natural gas will change the physicochemical properties of the mixture of natural gas and hydrogen. Such a mixture will be supplied through the gas system, to consumers, including households, where the amounts of received gas will be metered. The physicochemical properties of hydrogen, including the specific density or viscosity, differ significantly from those of the natural gas components, such as methane, ethane, propane, nitrogen, etc. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to establish the impact of the changes in the gas composition caused by the addition of hydrogen to natural gas on the metrological properties of household gas meters, including thermal gas meters. Keywords: adaptive auto-reclosing, EV transmission lines, Hilbert–Huang transform, power system protection, transient fault
This paper presents a reliable and fast index to detect the instant of arc extinction for adaptive single-pole automatic reclosing (ASPAR). The proposed method is a simple technique for ASPAR on shunt compensated transmission lines using the Hilbert−Huang Transform (HHT). The HHT method is a combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT). The first intrinsic mode function (IMF1) decomposed by EMD, which contains high frequencies of the faulty phase voltage, was used to calculate the proposed index. HT calculates the first IMF spectrum in the time-frequency domain. The presented index is the sum of all frequency contents below 55 Hz, which remains very low until the fault clearance.
