Experimental Investigation of the Effect of a Recuperative Heat Exchanger and Throttles Opening on a CO2/Isobutane Autocascade Refrigeration System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autocascade, Carbon Dioxide, isobutane, natural refrigerants, R744
An experimental evaluation of an autocascade refrigeration (ACR) system was carried out. A zeotropic mixture of isobutane and CO2 was employed as a working fluid in an autocascade refrigeration (ACR) system. An experimental system was designed and built to study the influence of the recuperative heat exchanger (RHX) and openings of the throttle valves on the system performance. The use of RHX facilitated the condensation process and improved the cycle characteristics. The working mass concentration of CO2 was higher, as it was closer to the nominal concentration and the discharge pressure was lower by 19% to even 39% when the RHX was employed in the system. An increase of up to 20% in the coefficient of performance (COP) was observed. Furthermore, the effects of the openings of the throttle valves on the system characteristics were studied. The change in the openings of the expansion valves affected the mass flows and the working mixture composition. The working CO2 mass fraction incre... [more]

Influence of Thermoelastic Phenomena on the Energy Conservation in Non-Contacting Face Seals
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, mechanical seal, non-contacting face seal, thermal analysis
The purpose of this study was to develop a mathematical model for non-contacting face seals to analyze how their performance is affected by thermoelastic phenomena. The model was used to solve thermal conductivity and thermoelasticity problems. The primary goal was to calculate the values of thermal deformations of the sealing rings in a non-contacting face seal with a flexibly mounted rotor (FMR) for a turbomachine. The model assumes the conversion of mechanical energy into heat in the fluid film. The heat flux generated in the fluid film is transferred first to the sealing rings and then to the fluid surrounding them. Asymmetric distribution of temperature within the sealing rings leads to the occurrence of thermal stresses and, consequently, a change in the geometry of the rings. The model is solved analytically. The distributions of temperature fields for the sealing rings in the cross-sections are calculated using the Fourier-Bessel series as a superficial function of two variable... [more]

Real-Time Dispatch of Coupled Transmission and Distribution Systems within a Distributed and Cooperative Framework
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed optimization, real-time dispatch, renewable energy resources, security-constrained economic dispatch
This paper presents a real-time dispatch strategy for coupled transmission and distribution systems within a distributed and cooperative control framework to maintain reliable and secure operation with minimum generation costs and maximum renewable energy consumption. The presented strategy transforms each distribution system into a dispatchable active source via an average-consensus-based active power control of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) at the distribution level and then dispatches the active power reference of conventional generators as well as the distribution systems in a measurement-based way at a transmission level. The voltage fluctuation caused by the DER active power control is smoothened with a distributed voltage control method, which can also reduce the active power loss in the distribution systems. Compared to existing real-time dispatch strategies, the proposed strategy can eliminate security issues in the transmission system in a short time by regula... [more]

The Effect of Fracturing Fluid Saturation on Natural Gas Flow Behavior in Tight Reservoirs
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas relative permeability, hydraulic fracturing, tight reservoirs, water saturation
Hydraulic fracturing becomes an essential method to develop tight gas. Under high injection pressure, fracturing fluid entering into the formation will reduce the flow channel. To investigate the influence of water saturation on gas flow behavior, this study conducted the gas relative permeability with water saturation and the flow rate with the pressure gradient at different water saturations. As the two dominant tight gas-bearing intervals, the Upper Paleozoic Taiyuan and Shihezi Formations deposited in Ordos Basin were selected because they are the target layers for holding vast tight gas. Median pore radius in the Taiyuan Formation is higher than the one in the Shihezi Formation, while the most probable seepage pore radius in the Taiyuan Formation is lower than the one in the Shihezi Formation. The average irreducible water saturation is 54.4% in the Taiyuan Formation and 61.6% in the Shihezi Formation, which indicates that the Taiyuan Formation has more movable water. The average... [more]

Projecting the Price of Lithium-Ion NMC Battery Packs Using a Multifactor Learning Curve Model
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery prices, lithium-ion NMC battery, multifactor learning curve
Renewable energy (RE) utilization is expected to increase in the coming years due to its decreasing costs and the mounting socio-political pressure to decarbonize the world’s energy systems. On the other hand, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are on track to hit the target 100 USD/kWh price in the next decade due to economy of scale and manufacturing process improvements, evident in the rise in Li-ion gigafactories. The forecast of RE and Li-ion technology costs is important for planning RE integration into existing energy systems. Previous cost predictions on Li-ion batteries were conducted using conventional learning curve models based on a single factor, such as either installed capacity or innovation activity. A two-stage learning curve model was recently investigated wherein mineral costs were taken as a factor for material cost to set the floor price, and material cost was a major factor for the battery pack price. However, these models resulted in the overestimation of future pric... [more]

The Nexus Between Convergence of Conventional and Renewable Energy Consumption in the Present European Union States. Explorative Study on Parametric and Semi-Parametric Methods
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, EU member states, renewable energy consumption, β-convergence, σ-convergence
Economic and social progress is directly and closely related to energy consumption. In the latest decades, there is a higher need to reduce energy consumption from conventional sources, replacing it with energy obtained from unconventional sources. The environmental concern is one of the objectives of the European economic policy, with a particular focus on renewable energy consumption and energy efficiency in order to lower the environmental impact. In this context, we analyzed energy consumption per capita and renewable energy consumption per capita in the EU with the help of parametric methods, using the β-convergence model, and semiparametric methods, using the σ-convergence model. In this research we proposed to study six analysis models of the period 1960−2015, based on the availability of data. We concluded that the EU states went through a convergence process in a slow pace of energy consumption per capita and renewable energy per capita, showing a convergence pattern. The resu... [more]

Differences of Flow Patterns and Pressure Pulsations in Four Prototype Pump-Turbines during Runaway Transient Processes
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: differences, flow patterns, pressure pulsations, pump-turbine, runaway transient process, S-shaped characteristics, similarities
Frequent working condition conversions in pumped-storage power stations often induce stability problems, especially when the operating point enters the S-shaped region, during which flow transitions and pressure fluctuations are serious. The pump-turbines with different specific speed values show different characteristics, but their differences in stability features are still not clear. In this study, four different pump-turbines were selected to simulate the runaway processes from turbine modes. The similarities and differences of flow patterns and pressure fluctuations were analyzed. For the similarities, pressure pulsations increase gradually and fluctuate suddenly once the backflows occur at the runner inlets. For the differences, the evolutions of backflows and pressure pulsations are related to specific speeds and runner shapes. Firstly, it is easier for the lower specific speed turbines to enter the reverse pump mode. Secondly, the blade lean angle influences the position where... [more]

Emission Measurement of Buses Fueled with Biodiesel Blends during On-Road Testing
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, PEMS, RME, SORT, transit bus, UCOME
Increasing the biodiesel content of diesel fuels is encouraged because of its reduced carbon footprint. Pure rapeseed methyl ester (RME)and used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) are characterised by well-to-tank greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions of 54% and 88% compared to pure B0 petrodiesel, respectively. Captive fleets such as public transport buses could benefit from these GHG reductions by increasing the biodiesel content of their fuel because they have a consequent yearly fuel consumption. The aim of this paper is to compare on-road tailpipe emissions of a diesel bus when increasing the biodiesel concentration in the fuel. The tests were carried out on a standard city bus belonging to the Euro V EEV emission standard that was equipped with a portable emission measurement system measuring NO, NO2, PN, CO and CO2 at the tailpipe. The bus followed the SORT which is representative of urban bus driving. The heavy urban on-road measurements indicated increased NOx emissions (24−26%), decr... [more]

Comparative Analysis of Effectiveness of Resistance and Induction Turnout Heating
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, induction heating, railway, resistance heating, safety of rail traffic, stock-rail, switch-rail, turnouts
Turnouts are key parts of rail roads and are exposed to adverse weather conditions such as snowfall, snow drifts, low temperatures, or sleet. Effective protection assures good turnout function and contributes to rail traffic efficiency and safety. Presently, resistance heating (RH) is the most common system of turnout heating in Europe. In this study, we attempted to implement energy-saving induction heating (IH) in order to cut costs of operation and electricity. A turnout heating test stand, including a stock-rail and a switch-rail, was executed in a climatic chamber. Air temperature was constant at the time of heating. Active power received by both the systems was identical for any measurement (450 W). Test results enabled an assessment of switch-rail position and variations of climatic chamber air temperature on growth of turnout temperatures. Effects of heating type on correct lubrication of the slide plate surface were compared. Dynamics of heating variations and their impact on... [more]

Experimental Study on the Inhibition Effects of Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide on Coal Spontaneous Combustion
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, coal spontaneous combustion, inhibition effect, nitrogen
Inert gases can effectively inhibit coal spontaneous combustion. In this paper, the inhibition effect of inert gases (N2 and CO2) on coal spontaneous combustion was studied. In the low-temperature oxidation stage, the constant-temperature heat release and apparent activation energy of coal sample were measured and calculated by the C80 micro-calorimeter. In the high-temperature combustion stage, the critical temperature, maximum peak temperature, ignition temperature, and burn-out temperature of coal samples were analyzed by the synchronous thermal analyzer. The results demonstrate that with the decrease of O2 concentration, the oxidation heat release of coal samples drops gradually while the apparent activation energy increases gradually. In the N2 and CO2 atmospheres, as the O2 concentration is reduced to 1.5% and 3%, respectively, the value of apparent activation energy changes from negative to positive, and the spontaneous reaction transits to a nonspontaneous reaction. Potential and Impacts of Cogeneration in Tropical Climate Countries: Ecuador as a Case Study
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, cogeneration, industrial energy efficiency, Sustainability, trigeneration, tropical climate country
High dependency on fossil fuels, low energy efficiency, poor diversification of energy sources, and a low rate of access to electricity are challenges that need to be solved in many developing countries to make their energy systems more sustainable. Cogeneration has been identified as a key strategy for increasing energy generation capacity, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and improving energy efficiency in industry, one of the most energy-demanding sectors worldwide. However, more studies are necessary to define approaches for implementing cogeneration, particularly in countries with tropical climates (such as Ecuador). In Ecuador, the National Plan of Energy Efficiency includes cogeneration as one of the four routes for making energy use more sustainable in the industrial sector. The objective of this paper is two-fold: (1) to identify the potential of cogeneration in the Ecuadorian industry, and (2) to show the positive impacts of cogeneration on power generation capacity,... Role of TiO2 Phase Composition Tuned by LiOH on The Electrochemical Performance of Dual-Phase Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 Microrod as an Anode for Lithium-Ion Battery
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrothermal, Li4Ti5O12-TiO2, lithium-ion battery, microrod, TiO2 rutile
In this study, a dual-phase Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 microrod was successfully prepared using a modified hydrothermal method and calcination process. The stoichiometry of LiOH as precursor was varied at mol ratio of 0.9, 1.1, and 1.3, to obtain the appropriate phase composition between TiO2 and Li4Ti5O12. Results show that TiO2 content has an important role in increasing the specific capacity of electrodes. The refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns by Rietveld analysis confirm that increasing the LiOH stoichiometry suppresses the TiO2 phase. In the scanning electron microscopy images, the microrod morphology was formed after calcination with diameter sizes ranging from 142.34 to 260.62 nm and microrod lengths ranging from 5.03−7.37 μm. The 0.9 LiOH sample shows a prominent electrochemical performance with the largest specific capacity of 162.72 mAh/g and 98.75% retention capacity achieved at a rate capability test of 1 C. Look Ahead Based Control Strategy for Hydro-Static Drive Wind Turbine Using Dynamic Programming
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic program, hydro-static turbine, non-linear optimization, wind energy
This research paper presents a look-ahead optimal control strategy for a Hydro-static Drive Wind Turbine when look ahead wind speed information is available. The proposed predictive controller is a direct numerical optimizer based on the well established principles of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (Dynamic Programming). Hydro-static transmission based, non-linear model of wind turbine is used in this optimization work. The optimal behavior of the turbine used the non-linearity of aerodynamic maps and hydro-static drive train by a convex combination of state space controller with measurable generator speed and hydraulic motor displacement as scheduling parameters. A comparative analysis between a optimal controller based on Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm as published in literature and the proposed look ahead based predictive controller is presented. The simulation results show that proposed look ahead strategy offered optimal operation of the wind turbine by closely tracking th... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: annulus, critical heat flux, flow boiling, Inconel 625, low pressure, two phase flow
Steady state flow boiling experiments were carried out on several heated tubes with outer diameter 9.14 mm at outlet pressures 120, 200 and 300 kPa, inlet temperatures 64, 78 and 91 °C and approximately 400, 500, 600 and 800 kg/(m2·s) mass flux entering the vertically aligned test annulus until critical heat flux (CHF) was reached. The tubes were made of Inconel 625 with a length of 400 mm. The Inconel tubes were tested in three different modifications as smooth, abraded with 150 grit sandpaper and bead blasted. Multiple experiments were repeated on the same specimen to investigate the effect of surface characteristic changes (i.e., wettability, roughness and oxide layer morphology) on the occurrence of CHF. Despite the changes in initial wettability, the CHF dependency was not clearly observed, however, the changes in roughness led to an increase in CHF. The total number of 115 experimental runs were collected and the results were also compared with other literature experimental data.

Dynamic Stall Model for Tower Shadow Effects on Downwind Turbines and Its Scale Effects
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade element and momentum method, downwind rotor, tower shadow
A dynamic stall model for tower shadow effects is developed for downwind turbines. Although Munduate’s model shows good agreement with a 1.0 m wind tunnel test model, two problems exist: (1) it does not express load increase before the entrance of the tower wake, and (2) it uses the empirical tower wake model to determine the wind speed profile behind the tower. The present research solves these problems by combining Moriarty’s tower wake model and the entrance condition of the tower wake. Moriarty’s model does not require any empirical parameter other than tower drag coefficient and it expresses positive wind speed around the tower also. Positive wind speed change is also allowed as the tower wake entrance condition in addition to the negative change observed in the previous model. It demonstrates better agreement with a wind tunnel test and contributes to the accuracy of the fatigue load, as it expresses a slight increase in load around the entrance of the tower wake. Furthermore, th... [more]

Lifting Off Spatial Degeneracy of Functions, Where Does It Lead Us for Photovoltaic Device Systems?
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrator solar cell, discrete translational symmetry, high efficiency, redirection waveguide, two-dimensional photoreceptor-conversion (2DPRC) scheme
The defact standard of a solar cell is that electric power generation is made at the same place as photoharvesting is performed, i.e., the function of photoharvesting/photoreception is spatially degenerated with that of electric power generation (photo-electroconversion). Here, in this review paper, we investigate how liberated we are when the degeneracy is lifted off. A conventional concentrator system is, in a sense, a system in which the primary photoharvesting place is decoupled from the photo-conversion part, but is too bulky because the two parts are connected three-dimensionally by photons. We propose a two-dimensional photoreceptor-conversion (2DPRC) scheme in which the photoreception part is spatially decoupled from, but is two-dimensionally connected to the photo-conversion part by a redirection waveguide (RWG). The whole system is in an edge-illumination/photoinjection configuration and concentrator system is quite naturally built, and the edge-injection lift off the trade-o... [more]

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had strong impacts on national and international freight, construction and tourism industry, supply chains, and has resulted in a rapid decline in the demand for traditional energy sources. In fact, research has outlined that urban areas depend on global supply chains for their day-to-day basic functions, including energy supplies, food and safe access to potable water. The disruption of global supply chains can leave many urban areas in a very vulnerable position, in which their citizens may struggle to obtain their basic supplies, as the COVID-19 crisis has recently shown. Therefore, solutions aiming to enhance local food, water and energy production systems, even in urban environments, have to be pursued. The COVID-19 crisis has also highlighted in the scientific community the problem of people’s exposure to outdoor and indoor pollution, confirmed as a key element for the increase both in the transmission and severity of the contagion, on top of invo... Split hydrogen direct injection (SHDI) has been proved capable of better efficiency and fewer emissions. Therefore, to investigate SHDI deeply, a numerical study on the effect of second injection timing was presented at a gasoline/hydrogen spark ignition (SI) engine with SHDI. With an excess air ratio of 1.5, five different second injection timings achieved five kinds of hydrogen mixture distribution (HMD), which was the main factor affecting the engine performances. With SHDI, since the HMD is manageable, the engine can achieve better efficiency and fewer emissions. When the second injection timing was 105° crank angle (CA) before top dead center (BTDC), the Pmax was the highest and the position of the Pmax was the earliest. Compared with the single hydrogen direct injection (HDI), the NOX, CO and HC emissions with SHDI were reduced by 20%, 40% and 72% respectively.

Solar thermochemical gasification is a promising solution for the clean production of low-emission synthetic fuels. It offers the possibility to upgrade various biomasses and waste feedstocks and further provides an efficient way to sustainably store solar energy into high-value and energy-intensive chemical fuels. In this work, a novel continuously-fed solar steam gasifier was studied using beechwood and solid recovered fuels (SRF) particles. Solar-only and hybrid solar/autothermal gasification experiments were performed at high temperatures to assess the performance of the reactor and its flexibility in converting various types of feedstocks. The hybrid operation was considered to increase the solar reactor temperature when the solar power input is not sufficient thanks to partial feedstock oxy-combustion. The hybrid solar process is thus a sustainable alternative option outperforming the conventional gasification processes for syngas production. Wood and waste particles solar conver... [more]

Various efforts have been made worldwide to reduce energy use for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Research and development are essential to ensuring the efficient use of renewable energy systems. This study proposes a multiple sources and multiple uses heat pump (MMHP) system that can efficiently respond to heating, cooling, and domestic hot water (DHW) loads using multiple natural heat sources. A task for new power generation technologies, interfaced to the electrical grid by power electronic converters, is to stiffen the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) at the initial few milliseconds (ms) after any variation of active power balance. This task is defined in this article as fast active power regulation (FAPR), a generic definition of the FAPR is also proposed in this study.
