April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response programs, multi-objective energy optimization, photovoltaic, renewable energy sources, smart grid, Wind
An energy optimization strategy is proposed to minimize operation cost and carbon emission with and without demand response programs (DRPs) in the smart grid (SG) integrated with renewable energy sources (RESs). To achieve optimized results, probability density function (PDF) is proposed to predict the behavior of wind and solar energy sources. To overcome uncertainty in power produced by wind and solar RESs, DRPs are proposed with the involvement of residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. In this model, to execute DRPs, we introduced incentive-based payment as price offered packages. Simulations are divided into three steps for optimization of operation cost and carbon emission: (i) solving optimization problem using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), (ii) optimization of operating cost and carbon emission without DRPs, and (iii) optimization of operating cost and carbon emission with DRPs. To endorse the applicability of the proposed optimization model based on MOGA... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: connectivity, oil shale, pore and fracture, site percolation, superheated steam
The connectivity of the internal pores and fractures in oil shale is the critical factor in determining the success of the insitu pyrolysis of the oil shale with superheated steam. In this paper, using a self-developed superheated steam pyrolysis experimental system, oil shale samples were subjected to pyrolysis experiments at different steam temperatures. Then, the oil shale samples were scanned with high-precision micro-CT equipment to obtain the three-dimensional digital core of oil shale (DCOS). Based on the three-dimensional site percolation theory and renormalization group algorithm, the pore and fracture connectivity characteristics of the DCOSs were studied. The results show that when the steam temperature reached the pyrolysis temperature for oil shale, a series of pores was formed during the pyrolysis process. These pores gradually connected the adjacent fracture and subsequently formed a massive pore-fracture cluster. However, from room temperature to 555 °C, there were alwa... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, electric vehicle, energy management, heating, induction heater, thermal comfort
The life and efficiency of electric vehicle batteries are susceptible to temperature. The impact of cold climate dramatically decreases battery life, while at the same time increasing internal impedance. Thus, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) is vital to heat and maintain temperature range if the electric vehicle’s batteries are operating in a cold climate. This paper presents an induction heater-based battery thermal management system that aims to ensure thermal safety and prolong the life cycle of Lithium-ion batteries (Li-Bs). This study used a standard simulation tool known as GT-Suite to simulate the behavior of the proposed BTMS. For the heat transfer, an indirect liquid heating method with variations in flow rate was considered between Lithium-ion batteries. The battery and cabin heating rate was analyzed using the induction heater powers of 2, 4, and 6 kW at ambient temperatures of −20, −10, and 0 °C. A water and ethylene glycol mixture with a ratio of 50:50 was consi... [more]

Kyung Rae Kim, Jae Keun Lee, Hae Do Jeong, Yul Ho Kang, Young Chull Ahn
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer rate, offset strip fin, plain rectangular fin, plate heat exchanger, pressure drop
This study evaluates the performance of a plate heat exchanger numerically and experimentally. The predictive model for estimating the heat transfer and frictional pressure drop across the plain and offset strip fins is compared with the experimental results with the parameters of Reynolds number and fin pitch. The heat transfer of the offset fin shape is 13.4% higher than that of the plain fin in the experiment in the case of Re = 6112 for the hot airflow and Re = 2257 for the cold airflow. A predictive model uses the effectiveness-Number of Transfer Units (NTU) method with the discretization in the segments divided into small control volumes in the heat exchanger. The difference of heat transfer and pressure drop for the plain fin between the numerical and the experimental results are approximately 1.9% and 5.9%, respectively. Thus, the results indicate that the predictive model for estimating the heat transfer is useful for evaluating the performance of the plate heat exchanger in t... [more]

Krystian Czernek, Stanisław Witczak
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, hydrodynamics, two-phase flow, very viscous liquid
This paper presents the results of analyses of the impact of heat transfer conditions on the hydrodynamics of downward co-current annular flow in vertical tubes of very viscous liquid and gas. The research was conducted within the range of gas velocities of 0−30.0 m/s and liquid velocities of 0.001−0.254 m/s, while the viscosity was in the unprecedented range of 0.046−3.5 Pas. The research demonstrates that the volume and nature of the liquid waves with various amplitudes and frequencies arising on the surface of the film are relative to the flow rate and viscosity of the gas phase. At the same time, we found that, under the condition of liquid cooling, an increase in viscosity resulted in the formation of a smooth interface whereas, under the conditions where the liquid is heated at the end of the channel section, a greater number of capillary waves were formed. This research resulted in the development of new dependencies which take into account the influence of selected thermal and... [more]

Keywords: floating platform, generation, load, losses, model, offshore wind, power, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transmission, turbine
Floating offshore wind is being considered in northern California as indicated by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s issuance of a lease consideration in the Humboldt Call Area. Humboldt County offers access to this enormous resource, but local electric load and transmission are limited. The potential impacts of offshore wind generators at three different scales were studied using a regional grid model of Humboldt County. Offshore wind generation was calculated using modeled wind speed data and 12-MW turbine specifications and integrated with projected load and historical generation. Offshore wind farms deployed in the Humboldt Call Area achieve annual capacity factors between 45% and 54% after losses and maintenance. Power output is variable between and within seasons, with full power output 30% of the time and no output approximately 20% of the time. Electricity from a 48-MW wind farm provides 22% of regional load with limited exports. A 144-MW wind farm serves 38% of local load... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion characteristics, emissions, pyrolysis, waste cooking oil (WCO)
This paper first describes a slow catalytic pyrolysis process used for synthesizing biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) as a feedstock. The influence of variations in the catalyst type (sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), and catalyst concentration (0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 10.0% by weight) on both the pyrolysis temperature range and biodiesel yield were investigated. The results suggested that sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was more effective than potassium hydroxide (KOH) as catalysts and that the highest yield (around 70 wt.%) was observed for a NaOH concentration of about 1 wt.% The resultant pyrolysis temperature range was also significantly lower for NaOH catalyst, thus suggesting overall lower energy consumption. Compared to conventional diesel, the synthesized biodiesel exhibited relatively similar physical properties and calorific value. The biodiesel was subsequently blended with diesel fuel in different blend ratios of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% by volume of biodiesel... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: comfort of energy, consumption, household, poverty of energy
Poland belongs to a group of countries with the highest share of expenditure on energy carriers in total household expenditure among the EU-28 countries. This fact adversely affects the quality of life of Polish citizens. One of the types of households which are most severely burdened with expenditure on energy carriers are households run by a single person. The scientific objective of the study was to identify the consumption patterns of energy carriers in Polish one-person households. The findings of the research were used to assess the correlation between the risk of energy poverty and particular socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the representatives of these households. Many statistical methods were used to achieve the research goal: analysis of variance, regression analysis, and cluster analysis. An aggregated index of energy comfort has been designed. Social factors, such as the level of education and the fact of holding non-manual positions, are strongly related t... [more]

Renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy, are being more and more adopted in small and micro-scale distributed generation systems. In this context, different hybrid configurations and layouts that may adopt, lead to different energy and economic performance of energy generation systems. In micro-scale applications, biomass and solar energy sources are more frequently investigated in literature compared to other combinations as biomass and wind energy. The analysis of the performance of a novel small-scale trigeneration system is presented in this paper. The system includes biomass boiler, water steam turbine, absorption chiller, and wind turbine, and it is linked to the electric grid by means of a bidirectional connection, allowing to the store virtually the electrical energy produced in excess, and use when needed. For the proposed system, a zootechnical farm and a residential building are considered as case study, including different scenarios for... [more]

Keywords: AERMOD model, lead battery recycling plant, lead concentrations, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
The contribution of emissions from the stack of a lead battery recycling plant to atmospheric lead concentrations and, eventually, to the topsoil of the surrounding area, were studied. A Gaussian dispersion model, of the American Meteorological Society/United States Environmental Protection Agency Regulatory Model, (AERMOD) was used to determine atmospheric total suspended particulate lead dispersion, which originated from stack emissions, over the wider study area. Stack emission parameters were obtained from online measurements of the industry control sensors. AERMOD simulated two scenarios for four calendar years, 2015 to 2018, one for the typical stack measured operating conditions and one for the legal limit operating conditions (emissions from the stack set by legislation to 0.5 mg m−3). Deposition fluxes modeled the input of atmospheric total suspended particulate Pb to the topsoil of the area. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were used to determine lead concentrations in the t... Keywords: cooling techniques, discharge rate, Li-ion battery, liquid cooling, thermal behavior
The design of an optimized thermal management system for Li-ion batteries has challenges because of their stringent operating temperature limit and thermal runaway, which may lead to an explosion. In this paper, an optimized cooling system is proposed for kW scale Li-ion battery stack. A comparative study of the existing cooling systems; air cooling and liquid cooling respectively, has been carried out on three cell stack 70Ah LiFePO4 battery at a high discharging rate of 2C. It has been found that the liquid cooling is more efficient than air cooling as the peak temperature of the battery stack gets reduced by 30.62% using air cooling whereas using the liquid cooling method it gets reduced by 38.40%. The performance of the liquid cooling system can further be improved if the contact area between the coolant and battery stack is increased. Therefore, in this work, an immersion-based liquid cooling system has been designed to ensure the maximum heat dissipation. The battery stack having... [more]

Keywords: artificial potential field, balance, cooperative control, lithium-ion battery, state-of-charge
Battery balance methods are the key technology to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the energy storage systems. Nevertheless, convenient balance methods experience slow convergence and difficult to adapt to quick charging applications. To solve the problem, in this paper, an artificial potential field-based lithium-ion battery balance method is proposed. Firstly, a cyber-physical model of the battery equalization system is proposed, in which the physical layer models the circuit components and the cyber layer represents the communication topology between the batteries. Then the virtual force function is established by artificial potential field to attract the voltage and state-of-charge of each cell to nominal values. With a feedback control law, the charging current of the battery is reasonably distributed to realize the rapid balance among batteries. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Keywords: battery equalizer circuits, battery management systems, electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery
Electric vehicles (EVs) are an alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, as they can reduce the environmental impact of transportation. The bottleneck for EVs is the high-voltage battery pack, which utilizes most of the space and increases the weight of the vehicle. Currently, the main challenge for the electronics industry is the cell equalization of the battery pack. This paper gives an overview of the research works related to battery equalizer circuits (BECs) used in EV applications. Several simulations were carried out for the main BEC topologies with the same initial conditions. The results obtained were used to perform a quantitative analysis between these schemes. Moreover, this review highlights important issues, challenges, variables and parameters associated with the battery pack equalizers and provides recommendations for future investigations. We think that this work will lead to an increase in efforts on the development of an advanced BEC for EV applications.

Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, dual source heat pump, EnergyPlus, ground source heat pump, heat pump, HVAC retrofit, hybrid systems
Ground coupled heat pumps are a notoriously efficient system for heating and cooling buildings. Sometimes the characteristics of the building and the user’s needs are such that the amount of heat extracted from the ground during the winter season can be considerably different from the amount injected in summer. This situation can cause a progressive cooling or heating of the ground with a negative effect on the energy efficiency and correct operation of the system. In these cases, an accurate sizing has to be done. In systems already built, it could be necessary to intervene a posteriori to remedy an excessive ground thermal drift due to the energy unbalance. In this work, such a situation relating to a real office building in Italy is investigated and several solutions are examined, one of which has been then implemented. In particular, a hybrid heat pump using as heat sink both the ground and external air is compared with common solutions through computer simulations using a dedicate... [more]

Keywords: Beggs and Brill correlation, multi-phase flow, multi-well-monitor system, production splitting method
In order to reduce the cost of wellheads, the production rate of the gas wells in the Hechuan Gas Field are mostly measured in groups, which raises a stringent barrier for industries to determine the production rate of each single well. The technique for determining the production of a single well from the production of the well-group can be called the production splitting method (PSM). In this work, we proposed a novel PSM for the multi-well-monitor system (MWMS) on the basis of the Beggs and Brill (BB) correlation. This proposed method can account for the multi-phase flow together with the features of the pipelines. Specifically, we discretize the pipeline into small segments and recognize the flow pattern in each segment. The pressure drop along the pipeline is calculated with the Beggs and Brill correlation, and the production of each well is subsequently determined with a trial method. We also applied this proposed method to a field case, and the calculated results show that the r... [more]

Keywords: chlor-alkali, constrained optimisation, day-ahead market, frequency containment reserve, stochastic modelling
The increased penetration of renewable energy sources in the electrical grid raises the need for more power system flexibility. One of the high potential groups to provide such flexibility is the industry. Incentives to do so are provided by variable pricing and remuneration of supplied ancillary services. The operational flexibility of a chlor-alkali electrolysis process shows opportunities in the current energy and ancillary services markets. A co-optimisation of operating the chlor-alkali process under an hourly variable priced electricity sourcing strategy and the delivery of Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) is the core of this work. A short term price prediction for the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and FCR market as input for a deterministic optimisation shows good results under standard DAM price patterns, but leaves room for improvement in case of price fluctuations, e.g., as caused by Renewable Energy Sources (RES). A two-stage stochastic optimisation is considered to cope with th... [more]

Keywords: ecological transportation, land and marine transportation, liquefied natural gas, LNG fuel system
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the most influential fuels of the 21st century, especially in terms of the global economy. The demand for LNG is forecasted to reach 400 million tonnes by 2020, increasing up to 500 million tonnes in 2030. Due to its high mass and volumetric energy density, LNG is the perfect fuel for long-distance transport, as well as for use in mobile applications. It is also characterized by low levels of emissions, which is why it has been officially approved for use as a marine fuel in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) where stricter controls have been established to minimize the airborne emissions produced by ships. LNG is also an emerging fuel in heavy road and rail transport. As a cryogenic fuel that is characterized by a boiling temperature of about 120 K (−153 °C), LNG requires the special construction of cryogenic mobile installations to fulfill conflicting requirements, such as a robust mechanical construction and a low number of heat leaks to colder parts... Keywords: intercept factor, optical measurement, parabolic trough collectors, profilometry, solar energy, structured light
In concentrating solar systems, it is essential to study the optical losses of the collectors. A fundamental parameter is the intercept factor, namely, the fraction of sunrays reflected by the concentrator that reaches the receiver. Optical profilometry studies the relationship between the collector profile and the intercept factor, which influences the collection efficiency. Profilometric analyses were performed on a micro-parabolic trough collector (m-PTC), with reduced sizes and greater mirror curvature than a usual PTC. The proposed technique projects a luminous pattern (structured light) both on the collector with an opaque covering and on a flat reference plane. Measurement set-up and calibration technique were developed for m-PTC. A program coded in Python analyzed the images and reconstructs the mirror profile. The tilted reference plane was reconstructed using an original geometric model and a calibration procedure. The focal length of each parabolic section was calculated, pr... [more]

Keywords: biomass gasification, Modelling, non-stoichiometric, Optimization, thermodynamics
Biomass gasification is the most reliable thermochemical conversion technology for the conversion of biomass into gaseous fuels such as H2, CO, and CH4. The performance of a gasification process can be estimated using thermodynamic equilibrium models. This type of model generally assumes the system reaches equilibrium, while in reality the system may only approach equilibrium leading to some errors between experimental and model results. In this study non-stoichiometric equilibrium models are modified and improved with correction factors inserted into the design equations so that when the Gibbs free energy is minimized model predictions will more closely match experimental values. The equilibrium models are implemented in MatLab and optimized based on experimental values from the literature using the optimization toolbox. The modified non-stoichiometric models are shown to be more accurate than unmodified models based on the calculated root mean square error values. These models can be... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC converter, high-voltage-gain converter, inductiveless converter, resonant converter, switched-capacitor converter
This paper presents a new concept and research results of DC-DC high-voltage-gain, high-frequency step-up resonant converters. The proposed topologies are optimized towards minimizing the number of switches and improvements in efficiency. Another relevant advantage of such type of converters is that they have a common input and output negative point. The proposed converters are based on the resonant switched-capacitor voltage multiplier circuit, and that is why they are compared with a classic converter from this family. The included results show the operating principle, possible switching methods with the consideration of their impact on the voltage gain level, as well as the voltage and current ripples. The operating concepts and analytical calculations are confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

Geological sequestration of CO2-rich gas as a CO2 capture and storage technique has a lower technical and cost barrier compared to industrial scale-up. In this study, we have proposed CO2 capture and storage via hydrate in geological formation within the hydrate stability zone as a novel technique to contribute to global warming mitigation strategies, including carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and to prevent vast methane release into the atmosphere caused by hydrate melting. We have attempted to enhance total gas uptake and CO2 capture efficiency in hydrate in the presence of kinetic promoters while using diluted CO2 gas (CO2-N2 mixture). Experiments are performed using unfrozen sands within hydrate stability zone condition and in the presence of low dosage surfactant and amino acids. Hydrate formation parameters, including sub-cooling temperature, induction time, total gas uptake, and split fraction, are calculated during the single-step formation and dissociation proce... [more]

Keywords: adjusted weight flexibility metric (AWFM), flexibility parameters, flexibility quantification, power system flexibility, power system operations, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
With the increasing shares of intermittent renewable sources in the grid, it becomes increasingly essential to quantify the requirements of the power systems flexibility. In this article, an adjusted weight flexibility metric (AWFM) is developed to quantify the available flexibility within individual generators as well as within the overall system. The developed metric is useful for power system operators who require a fast, simple, and offline metric. This provides a more realistic and accurate quantification of the available technical flexibility without performing time-consuming multi-temporal simulations. Another interesting feature is that it can be used to facilitate scenario comparisons. This is achieved by developing a new framework to assure the consistency of the metric and by proposing a new adjusted weighting mechanism based on correlation analysis and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). A new ranking approach based on flexibility was also proposed to increase the share of th... [more]
