The Role of Emitters, Heat Pump Size, and Building Massive Envelope Elements on the Seasonal Energy Performance of Heat Pump-Based Heating Systems
Matteo Dongellini, Paolo Valdiserri, Claudia Naldi, Gian Luca Morini
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-to-water heat pumps, demand response logic, envelope thermal inertia, seasonal energy performance, thermal comfort
The influence of emitters, heat pump size and building envelope thermal inertia was investigated on the energy consumption of a heat pump-based heating system with a numerical study performed with the dynamic software TRNSYS. An algorithm based on a Thermal Inertia Control Logic (TICL), which can exploit the capability of the building envelope to store thermal energy, has been applied. When the proposed algorithm is employed, the indoor air temperature set-point is increased when the outdoor temperature is larger than the bivalent temperature of the building-heat pump system. Different configurations of the heating system were simulated considering either convective (fan-coil) or radiant (radiant floor) emitters coupled to a variable-speed air-to-water heat pump. Simulations have been carried out considering a reference building derived from the IEA SHC Task 44 and evaluating the influence of the proposed control logic on both the heat pump seasonal energy performance and the internal... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep coal mine, emergency braking, heavy load, high speed, tribo-brake
The friction wear and thermal fatigue cracking of the brake shoe and friction-induced self-excited vibration (frictional flutter) of the disc brake can easily occur during emergency braking of a deep coal mine hoist with at high speed and with a heavy load. Therefore, tribo-brake characteristics between the brake disc and brake shoe during emergency braking of a deep coal mine hoist are investigated in the present study. Scaled parameters of the disc brake of a deep coal mine hoist are determined by employing the similarity principle. Friction tests between friction disc and brake shoe are carried out to obtain the coefficient of friction in the case of high speed and large specific pressure between the friction disc and brake shoe. Coupled thermo-mechanical finite element analyses of the brake disc and brake shoe are established to investigate temperature and stress fields of the brake disc and brake shoe during emergency braking, which is validated by the engineering failure case. Zhiyong Li, Xin Wang, Guohang Huang, Hui Wan, Yougen Chen
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active suppression method, notch filter, PMSWT, triple frequency ripple, wind shear
Wind shear is among the important sources of torque fluctuation on mechanical side and output power fluctuation on electromagnetic side and grid connection point, which frequency are triple turbine rotation frequency. With the increase in wind turbine single capacity and wind power integration scale, the power fluctuation caused by wind shear cannot be ignored. The paper takes a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous wind turbine (PMSWT) as the research object. Firstly, the fluctuation transfer mechanism model is established; then, the current ripple is extracted by a notch filter to calculate the voltage control signal to suppress power fluctuation actively by the DC link capacitor which absorbs fluctuation energy. The simulation experiment shows that the suppression strategy is effective and reliable.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated solar power, electricity mix, Morocco, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, storage
In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity of the optimal mixes to cost and variability associated with solar technologies and examine the role of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) combined to Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) together with time-space complementarity in reducing the adequacy risk—imposed by variable Renewable Energies (RE)—on the Moroccan electricity system. To do that, we model the optimal recommissioning of RE mixes including Photovoltaic (PV), wind energy and CSP without or with increasing levels of TES. Our objective is to maximize the RE production at a given cost, but also to limit the variance of the RE production stemming from meteorological fluctuations. This mean-variance analysis is a bi-objective optimization problem that is implemented in the E4CLIM modeling platform—which allows us to use climate data to simulate hourly Capacity Factors (CFs) and demand profiles adjusted to observations. We adapt this software to Morocco and its four electrical zones for the year... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, cardoon, oxidative stability, transesterification, viscosity, viscosity index
The production of sustainable and biodegradable products, for energy or material use, is becoming important for local economies. Thus, biorefineries can play an important role in sustainable development at regional levels and therefore the search for feedstocks with multiple uses is vital. The goal of this research was to assess the implementation of Cynara Cardunculus L. oil as the basis of a biorefinery for biodiesel and biolubricant production, proposing the main steps for this purpose. The chemical reaction selected for biodiesel and biolubricant production was transesterification, using methanol and other more complex alcohols. The optimization of each step was carried out, assessing the yield by gas chromatography. Once the optimum conditions were selected, the main characteristics of the biofuel or biolubricant were measured, paying attention to viscosity and oxidative stability. As a result, Cynara Cardunculus L. oil could be a suitable feedstock for a biorefinery, as long as s... [more]

Bernd Thormann, Thomas Kienberger
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, grid region, heat pump, load approach, low-voltage level
While an area-wide implementation of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric heat pumps (HPs) will contribute to a decarbonization of the energy system, they represent new challenges for existing low-voltage (LV) power grids. Hence, this study investigates potential grid congestions on the basis of three contrasting load approaches applied to four different grid regions. Within the three load approaches, temporal characteristics of various grid customer classes (EVs, HPs, households etc.) are derived from highly resolved realistic load profiles. In accordance with classic grid planning, firstly a static load approach is analyzed by applying the modeled coincidence for each consumer class individually. Secondly, this static approach is modified by including combined coincidence factors, taking temporal consumer class interactions into account. Finally, both static load approaches are compared with detailed annual time series analyses by means of load flow simulations using real-life LV gri... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breakdown voltage, capacitive-assisted ignition (CAI), constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC), electron collision, high energy, matching effect of high voltage (MEHV), plasma ignition, spark ignition system, spark kernel
The characteristics of spark ignition with a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) is evaluated for the efficiency of capacitive-assisted ignition (CAI), such as spark kernel and flame growth. The conventional spark method and matching effect of high voltage (MEHV) method are evaluated to compare the spark growth distribution characteristics. To do this study, a plasma system is used and is consisted of input power, three capacitors, a transformer, high voltage cable, J-type of a spark plug, diode, and CVCC. The experiment is conducted under various operating conditions, such as 1 bar, 295 K of initial temperature, 50, 100, 150 V of ignition box, 400 V of MEHV, 0.7 ms of spark duration, and 0 kΩ of plug resistor. The results show that the spark growth at the initial voltages of 100 V and 150 V has the same characteristic, and the surface area is increased by 13 mm2 at 150 V compared to 100 V because capacitance energy stored in three capacitors is efficiently induced by the effect... A Hybrid RCS Reduction Method for Wind Turbines
Shyh-Kuang Ueng
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: RCS reduction, reshaping methods, wind turbines
Wind turbine towers produce significant scatterings when illuminated by radars. Their reflectivity affects air traffic control, military surveillance, vessel tracking, and weather data sensing processes. Reducing the radar cross-section (RCS) of wind turbines is an essential task when building wind farms. It has been proved that round and bumpy structures can scatter radar waves and reduce the RCS of a reflector. Other research showed that taper towers generate smaller radar returns than cylindrical towers. In this research, we combine both strategies to devise a more effective method for designing wind turbine towers in the hope that their RCS can be further reduced. The test results reveal that the proposed method out-performs current reshaping methods. Wind turbine towers possessing taper shapes and periodic surface bumps deflect incident electromagnetic waves to insignificant directions. Thus, radar returns in the back-scattering directions decrease. Other experiments also verify t... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anisotropic permeability, coalbed methane, dual peak production, large dip angle, stress heterogeneity, ultra-thick
The large spatial variability of in-situ stress and initial reservoir pressure in steeply-dipping ultra-thick coalbed methane (UTCBM) reservoirs exert strong control on the initial distribution of stress-sensitive permeability. This results in significant differences in the propagation of reservoir depressurization, gas production characteristics, distribution of fluid saturation, and evolution of permeability relative to flat-lying and thin counterpart coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. We contrast these responses using the Fukang mining area of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, as a type-example using coupled hydro-mechanical modeling. Production response indicates: (1) Dual peaks in CBM production rate, due to the asynchronous changes in the gas production rate in each the upper and lower sections of the reservoir; (2) higher depressurization and water saturation levels in the lower section of the reservoir relative to the upper at any given distance from the production well that a... Radosław Kaplan, Michał Kopacz
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clean coal technologies, coal to hydrogen, economic assessment of coal gasification in Poland, hydrogen production and outlook
This study documents the results of economic assessment concerning four variants of coal gasification to hydrogen in a shell reactor. That assessment has been made using discounting methods (NPV: net present value, IRR: internal rate of return), as well as indicators based on a free cash flow to firm (FCFF) approach. Additionally, sensitivity analysis has been carried out, along with scenario analysis in current market conditions concerning prices of hard coal, lignite, hydrogen and CO2 allowances, as well as capital expenditures and costs related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems. Based on NPV results, a negative economic assessment has been obtained for all the analyzed variants varying within the range of EUR −903 to −142 million, although the variants based on hard coal achieved a positive IRR (5.1−5.7%) but lower than the assumed discount rates. In Polish conditions, the gasification of lignite seems to be unprofitable, in the assumed scale of total investment outlays an... [more]

Keywords: battery safety, dynamic impact, split Hopkinson bar, tensile test
The dynamic behavior of the lithium-ion battery is evaluated by simulating the full battery system and each corresponding component, including the jellyroll and thin-foil electrodes. The thin-foil electrodes were evaluated using a novel design of split Hopkinson tensile bar (SHTB), while the jellyroll was evaluated using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). A new stacking method was employed to strengthen the stress wave signal of the thin-foil electrodes in the SHTB simulation. The characteristic of the stress−strain curve should remain the same regardless of the amount of stacking. The jellyroll dynamic properties were characterized by using the SHPB method. The jellyroll was modeled with Fu-Chang foam and modified crushable foam and compared with experimental results at the loading speeds of 20 and 30 m/s. The dynamic behavior compared very well when it was modeled with Fu-Chang foam. These studies show that the dynamic characterization of Li-ion battery components can be evalua... [more]

Szymon Kuczyński, Mariusz Łaciak, Adam Szurlej, Tomasz Włodek
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alternative fuel, fuel, liquefied natural gas, Liquified Natural Gas, LNG composition, methane number
The one of main quality requirements of natural gas as an engine fuel is the methane number (MN). This parameter indicates the fuel’s capability to avoid knocking in the engine. A higher MN value indicates a better natural gas quality for gas engines. Natural gas with higher methane content tends to have higher MN value. This study presents analysis of deviation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) composition and its impact on LNG quality as an engine fuel. The analysis of higher hydrocarbons and nitrogen content impact on LNG parameters was considered for several samples of LNG compositions. Most engine manufacturers want to set a new, lower limit value for methane number at 80. This fact causes significant restrictions on the range of variability in the composition of liquefied natural gas. The goal of this study was to determine the combination of the limit content of individual components in liquefied natural gas to achieve the strict methane number criterion (MN > 80). To fulfill this... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, innovation, natural gas combined cycle, program evaluation
This study evaluates the impact of a U.S. government-sponsored research program on advanced natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) innovations in the 1990s. From 1992−2000, the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) partnered with turbine manufacturers General Electric (GE) and Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) in a cost-sharing partnership called the Advanced Turbine System program to promote efficiency innovations for NGCC technology. Using data from the European Patent Office’s worldwide patent database (PATSTAT), this study evaluates advanced turbine technology innovations by the program participants and their competitors. Using a negative binomial model, this approach shows GE increased the relative quantity of their patents towards the end of the program and afterwards, indicating the program led to more advanced NGCC innovations for GE. SWPC, on the other hand, had higher patent citations for patents filed during the DOE program relative to competitors, indicating SWPC had... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2-DOF control, active damping, engine clutch, hybrid starter and generator, IP control, parallel hybrid vehicle, PI control, speed control, zero overshoot, zero phase error
Speed control algorithms were studied to improve vehicle fuel economy and driving performance by rapidly combining two power sources—the engine and the driving motor. A hybrid starter and generator (HSG) was used in parallel hybrid vehicles, improving vehicle drive system efficiency by eliminating torque converters. The proposed zero-overshoot and zero-phase-error speed controller with active damping has the following three characteristics. First, it has an active damping structure resistant to load fluctuations (e.g., cranking torque fluctuation during engine starting). Second, there is no speed overshoot for the step command corresponding to the minimum engine running speed. Finally, it has no steady-state error for the ramp command generated by the moving vehicle. These control features reduce the time required to match the speeds of the two power sources, reducing delay when the vehicle starts and reducing energy consumption by minimizing unnecessary engine rotation. Keywords: lithium batteries, photovoltaics, power purchasing agreement (PPA)
With the rise in the utilization of free fuel energy sources, namely solar and wind, across the globe, it has become necessary to study and implement models of a sustainable power network. This paper focuses on the design of a conceptual power network based on photovoltaics (PV) for power generation and lithium-ion batteries for storage. The power system showcases the various metrics that are involved in a grid-tied PV- and battery-based power network. It also encompasses the various design parameters and sizing considerations to design and conceptualize such a power network. The model focuses on the importance of the conservation of power by avoiding wastage of generated power through inverter sizing and design considerations. Finally, an economic and feasibility analysis is carried out to showcase the economic viability of the PV- and battery-based power network in today’s alternating current (AC)-based grid.

Keywords: cyclic solvent injection (CSI), foamy-oil flow, gas pressure cycling (GPC), solution-gas drive, solvent-assisted gas pressure cycling (SA-GPC), thin heavy oil reservoirs
In this paper, gas pressure cycling (GPC) and solvent-assisted gas pressure cycling (SA-GPC) were developed as two new and effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes. Eight coreflood tests were conducted by using a 2-D rectangular sandpacked physical model with a one or two-well configuration. More specifically, two cyclic solvent injection (CSI), three GPC, and three SA-GPC tests were conducted after the primary production, whose pressure was declined in steps from Pi = 3.0 MPa to Pf = 0.2 MPa. It was found that the CSI tests had poor performances because of the known CSI technical shortcomings and an additional technical issue of solvent trapping found in this study. Quick heavy oil viscosity regainment resulted in the solvent-trapping zone. In contrast, C3H8-GPC test at a pressure depletion step size of ∆PEOR = 0.5 MPa and C3H8-SA-CO2-GPC test at ∆PEOR = 1.0 MPa had the highest total heavy oil recovery factors (RFs) of 41.9% and 36.6% of the original oil-in-place (OOIP) among t... Lei Zhou, Xiaojun Zhang, Lijia Zhong, Jie Yu
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto-ignition, flame propagation velocity, knocking mechanism, pressure oscillation, turbulence
Knocking is a destructive and abnormal combustion phenomenon that hinders modern spark ignition (SI) engine technologies. However, the in-depth mechanism of a single-factor influence on knocking has not been well studied. Thus, the major aim of the present study is to study the effects of flame propagation velocity and turbulence intensity on end-gas auto-ignition through a large eddy simulation (LES) and a decoupling methodology in a downsized gasoline engine. The mechanisms of end-gas auto-ignition as well as strong pressure oscillation are qualitatively analyzed. It is observed that both flame propagation velocity and turbulence have a non-monotonic effect on knocking intensity. The competitive relationship between flame propagation velocity and ignition delay of the end gas is the primary reason responding to this phenomenon. A higher flame speed leads to an increase in the heat release rate in the cylinder, and consequently, quicker increases in the temperature and pressure of the... [more]

Keywords: carbon sequestration, combined heat and power, flame-assisted fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cell, supercritical CO2
The low prices and its relatively low carbon intensity of natural gas have encouraged the coal replacement with natural gas power generation. Such a replacement reduces greenhouse gases and other emissions. To address the significant energy penalty of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in gas turbine systems, a novel high efficiency concept is proposed and analyzed, which integrates a flame-assisted fuel cell (FFC) with a supercritical CO2 (sCO2) Brayton cycle air separation. The air separation enables the exhaust from the system to be CO2 sequestration-ready. The FFC provides the heat required for the sCO2 cycle. Heat rejected from the sCO2 cycle provides the heat required for adsorption-desorption pumping to isolate oxygen via air separation. The maximum electrical efficiency of the FFC sCO2 turbine hybrid (FFCTH) without being CO2 sequestration-ready is 60%, with the maximum penalty being 0.68% at a fuel-rich equivalence ratio (Φ) of 2.8, where Φ is proportional to fuel-air ratio. Keywords: differential drive mobile robots, energy management strategy, fuel cell, industrial self-guided vehicle
This paper deals with the design of an energy management strategy (EMS) for an industrial hybrid self-guided vehicle (SGV), considering the size of a fuel cell (FC) stack and degradation of a battery pack. In this context, first, a realistic energy model of the SGV was proposed and validated, based on experiments. This model provided a basis for individual components analysis, estimating energy requirements, component sizing, and testing various EMSs, prior to practical implementation. Second, the performance of the developed FC/battery SGV powertrain was validated under three EMS modes. Each mode was studied by considering four different FC sizes and three battery degradation levels. The final results showed that a small FC as a range extender is recommended, to reduce system cost. It is also important to maintain the FC in its high efficiency zones with a minimum ON/OFF cycle, leading to efficiency and lifetime enhancement of FC system. Battery SOC have to be kept at a high level dur... [more]

Keywords: annealing temperatures, carrier transportation, liquid-phase ligand-exchange, PbS quantum dot, solar cells
We constructed ZnO/PbS quantum dot (QD) heterojunction solar cells using liquid-phase ligand exchange methods. Colloidal QD solutions deposited on ZnO-dense layers were treated at different temperatures to systematically study how thermal annealing temperature affected carrier transport properties. The surface of the layers became dense and smooth as the temperature approached approximately 80 °C. The morphology of layers became rough for higher temperatures, causing large grain-forming PbS QD aggregation. The number of defect states in the layers indicated a valley-shaped profile with a minimum of 80 °C. This temperature dependence was closely related to the amount of residual n-butylamine complexes in the PbS QD layers and the active layer morphology. The resulting carrier diffusion length obtained on the active layers treated at 80 °C reached approximately 430 nm. The solar cells with a 430-nm-thick active layer produced a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.3%. An even higher P... [more]

Keywords: anti-gravity heat pipe, changeable cross-sectional wick structure, tapering column phase-change chamber, thermal performances
The objective of this study was to fabricate anti-gravity heat pipes with a tapering column phase-change chamber and changeable cross-sectional wick structure. The thermal performances of the anti-gravity heat pipes were experimentally investigated. Results show that the thermal resistances of the different heat pipes are less than 0.03 °C/W, except for the sharp conical chamber heat pipe under anti-gravity heating conditions (0.121 °C/W). Start-up times of different types of heat pipes are similar and the temperatures are steady within 3 to 5 min. The heat transfer ability of a conical chamber is always better than that of a cylindrical one. The performance of the sharp conical chamber heat pipe is the best under gravity assistance heating conditions. Contrarily, the blunt conical chamber heat pipe has the best heat transfer ability under anti-gravity heating conditions. Moreover, the heat transfer capability of the blunt conical chamber heat pipe is unaffected by the relative positio... [more]

Keywords: Coggin’s multivariate, H2/N2 separation, liquefied synthetic natural gas, Optimization, synthetic natural gas, two-phase expander
Synthetic natural gas (SNG) production from coal is one of the well-matured options to make clean utilization of coal a reality. For the ease of transportation and supply, liquefaction of SNG is highly desirable. In the liquefaction of SNG, efficient removal of low boiling point impurities such as hydrogen (H2) and nitrogen (N2) is highly desirable to lower the power of the liquefaction process. Among several separation processes, membrane-based separation exhibits the potential for the separation of low boiling point impurities at low power consumption as compared to the existing separation processes. In this study, the membrane unit was used to simulate the membrane module by using Aspen HYSYS V10 (Version 10, AspenTech, Bedford, MA, United States). The two-stage and two-step system designs of the N2-selective membrane are utilized for SNG separation. The two-stage membrane process feasibly recovers methane (CH4) at more than 95% (by mol) recovery with a H2 composition of ≤0.05% by m... [more]
Evolving Bidding Formats and Pricing Schemes in USA and Europe Day-Ahead Electricity Markets

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidding formats, market design, pricing rules, renewable energy sources, wholesale electricity markets
This paper compares the evolution of USA and European power markets and evaluates the suitability and future challenges of their designs in the context of the transition to a low-carbon power system. The analysis focuses on bidding formats (the way in which organized electricity markets allow participants to express their operational constraints) and pricing schemes (how agents recover their short-term costs from market prices). The radical evolution of the power mixes worldwide already experienced in the last decade and the larger one to come, with even greater shares of renewable energy and a more prominent role for storage resources, exposes limitations in current market designs. We develop an in-depth and comprehensive review of best practices from both sides of the Atlantic, and learning from them, we draw recommendations to evolve these market design elements.
Spectral Irradiance Influence on Solar Cells Efficiency

Keywords: electromagnetic spectrum, MM, SEF, SF, spectral irradiance, SR
This paper investigates the influence of the spectral irradiance variation and the spectral response (SR) on the production of energy by photovoltaic cells. To determine the impact of SR and spectral irradiance on m-Si and perovskite cells, experimental tests were conducted outdoors, used optical filters to select different zones of the spectrum. For the computational simulations of the different photovoltaic modules, when subjected to a certain spectral irradiance, a model with spectral factor (SF) was implemented. The SF model accurately simulated the experiments performed for the high-pass filters. The highest relative errors for certain irradiation bands occurred due to the input variables used in the model, which did not fully describe the reality of the experiments performed. The effect of the SR and the spectral irradiance for each of them were observed through the simulations for the m-Si, a-Si, CdTe, and copper indium selenide (CIS) modules. The CIS technology presented a bett... [more]
