Methane Hydrate Formation and Dissociation in Sand Media: Effect of Water Saturation, Gas Flowrate and Particle Size
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas flowrate, gas hydrate, kinetics, methane storage estimate, particle size, porous media, water saturation
Assessing the influence of key parameters governing the formation of hydrates and determining the capacity of the latter to store gaseous molecules is needed to improve our understanding of the role of natural gas hydrates in the oceanic methane cycle. Such knowledge will also support the development of new industrial processes and technologies such as those related to thermal energy storage. In this study, high-pressure laboratory methane hydrate formation and dissociation experiments were carried out in a sandy matrix at a temperature around 276.65 K. Methane was continuously injected at constant flowrate to allow hydrate formation over the course of the injection step. The influence of water saturation, methane injection flowrate and particle size on hydrate formation kinetics and methane storage capacity were investigated. Six water saturations (10.8%, 21.6%, 33%, 43.9%, 55% and 66.3%), three gas flowrates (29, 58 and 78 mLn·min−1) and three classes of particle size (80−140, 315−45... [more]

Coastal Wind Power in Southern Santa Catarina, Brazil
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coastal platform, LIDAR, offshore wind energy, Santa Catarina, South Atlantic subtropical high, Southern Brazil, wind power
A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) wind profiler was used to estimate the wind speed in the southern coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. This profiler was installed on a coastal platform 250 m from the beach, and recorded wind speed and direction from January 2017 to December 2018. The power generation from three wind turbines was simulated, to obtain estimations of the average power, energy generation and capacity factor, as well as to assess the performance of a hypothetical wind farm. The scale and shape parameters of the Weibull distribution were evaluated and compared with those of other localities in the state. The prevailing winds tend to blow predominantly from the northeast and southwest directions. Wind magnitudes are higher for the NE and SW ocean sectors where the average wind power density can reach 610−820 W m−2. The Vestas 3.0 turbine spent the largest percentage of time in operation (>76%). The higher incidence of strong northeasterly winds in 2017 and more freque... [more]

Residential Natural Gas Demand Response Potential during Extreme Cold Events in Electricity-Gas Coupled Energy Systems
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy efficiency, building stock modeling, demand response, demand side management, energy resilience
In regions where natural gas is used for both power generation and heating buildings, extreme cold weather events can place the electrical system under enormous stress and challenge the ability to meet residential heating and electric demands. Residential demand response has long been used in the power sector to curtail summer electric load, but these types of programs in general have not seen adoption in the natural gas sector during winter months. Natural gas demand response (NG-DR) has garnered interest given recent extreme cold weather events in the United States; however, the magnitude of savings and potential impacts—to occupants and energy markets—are not well understood. We present a case-study analysis of the technical potential for residential natural gas demand response in the northeast United States that utilizes diverse whole-building energy simulations and high-performance computing. Our results show that NG-DR applied to residential heating systems during extreme cold-we... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Brayton cycles, concentrated solar power, distributed energy production, parabolic dish, thermo-economic analysis
Small-scale hybrid parabolic dish concentrated solar power systems are a promising option to obtain distributed electricity. During the day, solar energy is used to produce electricity, and the absence of sunlight can be overwhelmed with fuel combustion. This study presents a thermo-economic survey for a hybridized power plant in different regions of Spain, considering the local climatic conditions. The developed model considers the instant solar irradiance and ambient temperature dynamically, providing an estimation of the power output, the associated fuel consumption, and the most relevant pollutant emissions linked to combustion. Hybrid and combustion-only operating modes at selected geographical locations in Spain (with different latitudes, mean solar irradiances, and meteorological conditions) are analyzed. The levelized cost of electricity indicator is estimated as a function of investment, interest rate, maintenance, and fuel consumption actual costs in Spain. Values of about 12... [more]

Micro Nuclear Reactors: Potential Replacements for Diesel Gensets within Micro Energy Grids
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel genset, micro energy grid, microreactor, optimal system, renewable energy sources, sensitivity analysis
Resilient operation of medium/large scale off-grid energy systems, which is a key challenge for energy crisis solutions, requires continuous and sustainable energy resources. Conventionally, micro energy grids (MEGs) are adopted to supply electricity and thermal energy simultaneously. Fossil-fired gensets, such as diesel generators, are indispensable components for off-grid MEGs due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources (RESs). However, fossil-fired gensets emit a significant amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Therefore, this study investigates an alternative source as an economical and environmental replacement for diesel gensets that can reduce GHG emissions and ensure system reliability. A MEG is developed in this paper to support a considerably large-scale electric and thermal demand at Ontario Tech University (UOIT). Different sizes of diesel gensets and RESs, such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass, are combined in the MEG for off-grid applications. To evaluate d... [more]

Investigation of Black-Starting and Islanding Capabilities of a Battery Energy Storage System Supplying a Microgrid Consisting of Wind Turbines, Impedance- and Motor-Loads
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: black-start, cold load pickup, islanding, master–slave control approach, microgrid
Microgrids are small scale electrical power systems that comprise distributed energy resources (DER), loads, and storage devices. The integration of DER into the electrical power system basically allows the clustering of small parts of the main grid into Microgrids. Due to the increasing amount of renewable energy, which is integrated into the main grid, high power fluctuations are expected to become common in the next years. This carries the risk of blackouts to be also more likely in the future. Microgrids hold the potential of increasing reliability of supply, since they are capable of providing a backup supply during a blackout of the main grid. This paper investigates the black-starting and islanding capabilities of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in order to provide a possible backup supply for a small part of the main grid. Based on field tests in a real Microgrid, the backup supply of a residential medium voltage grid is tested. Whereas local wind turbines within this gr... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anomaly detection, condition monitoring, Elliptical Envelope, gearbox, Isolation Forest, One Class Support Vector Machine, SCADA
Anomaly detection for wind turbine condition monitoring is an active area of research within the wind energy operations and maintenance (O & M) community. In this paper three models were compared for multi-megawatt operational wind turbine SCADA data. The models used for comparison were One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM), Isolation Forest (IF), and Elliptical Envelope (EE). Each of these were compared for the same fault, and tested under various different data configurations. IF and EE have not previously been used for fault detection for wind turbines, and OCSVM has not been used for SCADA data. This paper presents a novel method of condition monitoring that only requires two months of data per turbine. These months were separated by a year, the first being healthy and the second unhealthy. The number of anomalies is compared, with a greater number in the unhealthy month being considered correct. It was found that for accuracy IF and OCSVM had similar performances in both traini... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARC, current density, electroluminescence imaging, PID mitigation, solar cells
Potential-induced degradation (PID) of photovoltaic (PV) cells is one of the most severe types of degradation, where the output power losses in solar cells may even exceed 30%. In this article, we present the development of a suitable anti-reflection coating (ARC) structure of solar cells to mitigate the PID effect using a SiO2 ARC layer. Our PID testing experiments show that the proposed ARC layer can improve the durability and reliability of the solar cell, where the maximum drop in efficiency was equal to 0.69% after 96 h of PID testing using an applied voltage of 1000 V and temperature setting at 85 °C. In addition, we observed that the maximum losses in the current density are equal to 0.8 mA/cm2, compared with 4.5 mA/cm2 current density loss without using the SiO2 ARC layer.

Despite strong political efforts in Europe, industrial small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seem to neglect adopting practices for energy efficiency. By taking a cultural perspective, this study investigated what drives the establishment of energy efficiency and corresponding practices in SMEs. Based on 10 ethnographic case studies and a quantitative survey among 500 manufacturing SMEs, the results indicate the importance of everyday employee behavior in achieving energy savings. The studied enterprises value behavior-related measures as similarly important as technical measures. Raising awareness for energy issues within the organization, therefore, constitutes an essential leadership task that is oftentimes perceived as challenging and frustrating. It was concluded that the embedding of energy efficiency in corporate strategy, the use of a broad spectrum of different practices, and the empowerment and involvement of employees serve as major drivers in establishing energy effici... Development of a Tool for Optimizing Solar and Battery Storage for Container Farming in a Remote Arctic Microgrid
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: container farm, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaics (PV), storage
High transportation costs make energy and food expensive in remote communities worldwide, especially in high-latitude Arctic climates. Past attempts to grow food indoors in these remote areas have proven uneconomical due to the need for expensive imported diesel for heating and electricity. This study aims to determine whether solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity can be used affordably to power container farms integrated with a remote Arctic community microgrid. A mixed-integer linear optimization model (FEWMORE: Food−Energy−Water Microgrid Optimization with Renewable Energy) has been developed to minimize the capital and maintenance costs of installing solar photovoltaics (PV) plus electricity storage and the operational costs of purchasing electricity from the community microgrid to power a container farm. FEWMORE expands upon previous models by simulating demand-side management of container farm loads. Its results are compared with those of another model (HOMER) for a test case. FEWM... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complex terrains, flow inclination angle, light detection and ranging, turbulence intensity, wind shear and veer, wind speed
Downwind turbines have favorable characteristics such as effective energy capture in up-flow wind conditions over complex terrains. They also have reduced risk of severe accidents in the event of disruptions to electrical networks during strong storms due to the free-yaw effect of downwind turbines. These favorable characteristics have been confirmed by wind-towing tank experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. However, these advantages have not been fully demonstrated in field experiments on actual wind farms. In this study—although the final objective was to demonstrate the potential advantages of downwind turbines through field experiments—field measurements were performed using a vertical-profiling light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system on a wind farm with downwind turbines installed in complex terrains. To deduce the horizontal wind speed, vertical-profiling LiDARs assume that the flow of air is uniform in space and time. However, in complex terrains and/... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: droplet impact, gas turbine, molten sand, smoothed particle hydrodynamics
Sand ingestion is highly detrimental for gas turbines because it leads to erosion and corrosion of engine components, accelerating material fatigue and contributing to global engine failure. In this paper the high velocity impact of a molten sand particle onto a solid wall is investigated by means of the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics method where the three phases are taken into account. Nominal conditions are a 25 μm particle composed of molten sand (dynamic viscosity μl=11 Pa·s) impacting the wall at a velocity of 250 m/s. The influence of different parameters are explored such as the mechanical properties of the molten sand particle (density, viscosity, surface tension), the impact conditions (velocity magnitude, particle size and angle of impact) as well as the particle shape (sphere or cube with different geometrical features impacting the wall). It is found that the particles do not form a lamella during the impact but mostly conserve its initial shape. It is also confirmed tha... [more]

Demand Flexibility Enabled by Virtual Energy Storage to Improve Renewable Energy Penetration
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy balance optimisation, Energy Conversion, flexibility, renewable energy integration, virtual energy storage
The increasing resort to renewable energy distributed generation, which is needed to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions, leads to challenges concerning the proper operation of electric distribution systems. As a result of the intrinsic nature of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), this generation shows a high volatility and a low predictability that make the balancing of energy production and consumption difficult. At the same time, the electrification of new energy-intensive sectors (such as heating) is expected. This complex scenario paves the way for new sources of flexibility that will have more and more relevance in the coming years. This paper analyses how the electrification of the heating system, combined with an electric flexibility utilisation module, can be used to mitigate the problems related to the fluctuating production of RES. By using Power-to-Heat (P2H) technologies, buildings are able to store the overproduction of RES in the form of thermal energy for end-use accordi... [more]

Benefit Evaluation of PV Orientation for Individual Residential Consumers
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: azimuth angle, in-plane irradiance, peak reduction, rooftop solar, self-sufficiency, storage
Photovoltaic (PV) installations located in the northern hemisphere must be oriented to the south in order to obtain maximal annual yield. This is mainly driven by the remuneration mechanisms which incentivize maximal energy production to a certain extent. Nowadays, such support mechanisms are declining or even phased out in many countries. Hence, self-consuming the produced energy is getting more viable. In order to match better the load demand pattern, the azimuth angle of a PV installation could be changed or oriented towards multiple directions. This article investigates the benefits of PV installations facing other directions than the south. Therefore, the Hay & Davies transposition model has been used to calculate the in-plane irradiance, as it is found in the literature to be the most accurate for non-south faced PV installations. In order to determine the benefit, a large dataset of real measured consumption profiles has been used and then divided according to their annual consu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial neural network, hazardous wastes, molten gasification, slag, viscosity
Molten gasification is considered as a promising technology for the processing and safe disposal of hazardous wastes. During this process, the organic components are completely converted while the hazardous materials are safely embedded in slag via the fusion-solidification-vitrification transformation. Ideally, the slag should be glassy with low viscosity to ensure the effective immobilization and steady discharge of hazardous materials. However, it is very difficult to predict the characteristics of slag using existing empirical equations or conventional mathematical methods, due to the complex non-linear relationship among the phase transformation, vitrification transition and chemical composition of slag. Equipped with a strong nonlinear mapping ability, an artificial neural network may be able to predict the properties of slags if a large amount of data is available for training. In this work, over 10,000 experimental data points were used to train and develop a slag classificatio... [more]

Simulation of Heat and Mass Transfer Characteristics for the Optimal Operating Conditions of a Gas-to-Gas Membrane Humidifier with Porous Metal Foam
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas-to-gas membrane humidifier, heat transfer, mass transfer, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, porous metal foam
The shell-and-tube type gas-to-gas membrane humidifier used with air supply to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell supplies heat and vapor through a membrane and does not require an additional power source. Packing porous metal foam in the flow path of the membrane humidifier can result in higher heat and mass transfer efficiencies due to heat conduction through metal. In this study, the influence of various operating conditions and types of porous metal foams on the transport characteristics of the membrane humidifier are evaluated by simulation. The main factor causing the improvement of heat and mass transfer is the high conductivity of the porous metal foam, which is significantly correlated with the type of material used, compression ratio, and pore diameter. Additionally, the heat and mass transfer changes significantly when the flow velocity and channel size change due to the effect of the metal foam becoming more pronounced.
