Dhani Avianto Sugeng, Ahmad Muhsin Ithnin, Wira Jazair Yahya, Hasannuddin Abd Kadir
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion characteristic, diesel engine, exhaust gas emission, steam condensation, water-in-biodiesel emulsion fuel
The focus of this work is to investigate the effect of emulsifier-free emulsion fuel via steam emulsification (SD) to the diesel engine through physical properties, combustion performance, and exhaust analysis, and compare with conventional emulsion fuel with water percentages of 5% and 10% (E5 and E10) and biodiesel blend (B5). The SD was prepared using a custom 200 mL glass mixing column. The B5 fuel quantitatively was filled in the column, and then the steam was injected from the bottom of the mixing column through the porous frit glass with the pores ranging from 40 to 100 µm. The average water droplet size of SD is 0.375 µm with the average water percentage of 6.18%. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of SD improved 4.19% and 3.92%, respectively, as compared to B5. The in-cylinder pressure (ICP) was lower than B5, however, yielding close to the B5 at 4 kW engine load. As for the exhaust emission test, NOx and PM for SD were reduced signif... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel-ash, iron-ore pelletizing, pellet dust, slagging/deposition, thermochemical equilibrium calculations
Combustion-generated fly ash particles in combination with the particles arising from the disintegration of iron-ore pellets, could give rise to the build-up of deposits on the refractory linings of the induration facility. Due to climate change and other environmental issues, there is a desire to cut down on use of fossil fuels. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the feasibility of replacing coal with less carbon-intensive alternatives such as upgraded biomass, e.g., biochar and pyrolysis bio-oil. While the combustion of biomass can be carbon-neutral, the effects of biomass ash upon slagging during the iron-ore pelletizing process in a grate-kiln setup is unknown. In the present study, the effect of the interaction between the pellet dust and biomass-ash upon melt formation and the viscosity of the resulting melt, which can collectively affect melt-induced slagging, was theoretically assessed. The slagging potential of 15 different biomass fuels, suitable for the pelletizing... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole logging, geophysical prospecting, geothermal gradient, geothermal resources, thermal conductivity, time-domain electromagnetics
The geothermal resources in Spain have been a source of deep research in recent years and are, in general, well-defined. However, there are some areas where the records from the National Institute for Geology and Mining show thermal activity from different sources despite no geothermal resources being registered there. This is the case of the area in the south of the Duero basin where this research was carried out. Seizing the opportunity of a deep borehole being drilled in the location, some geophysical resources were used to gather information about the geothermal properties of the area. The employed geophysical methods were time-domain electromagnetics (TDEM) and borehole logging; the first provided information about the depth of the bedrock and the general geological structure, whereas the second one gave more detail on the geological composition of the different layers and a temperature record across the whole sounding. The results allowed us to establish the geothermal gradient o... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, load shifting, PV self-consumption, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sampling rate, Simulation
Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) capacity is increasing and is currently estimated to account for 3.0% of worldwide energy generation. One strategy to balance fluctuating PV power is to incentivize self-consumption by shifting certain loads. The potential improvement in the amount of self-consumption is usually estimated using smart meter and PV production data. Smart meter data are usually available only at sampling frequences far below the Nyquist limit. In this paper we investigate how this insufficient sampling rate affects the estimated self-consumption potential of shiftable household appliances (washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers). We base our analyses on measured consumption data from 16 households in the UK and corresponding PV data. We found that the simulated results have a marked dependence on the data sampling rate. The amount of self-consumed energy estimated with data sampled every 10 min was overestimated by 30−40% compared to estimations using data with 1... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: homogeneous isotropic turbulence, turbulence, turbulence decay, wake map, wind turbine wake
Wind turbines are usually clustered in wind farms which causes the downstream turbines to operate in the turbulent wakes of upstream turbines. As turbulence is directly related to increased fatigue loads, knowledge of the turbulence in the wake and its evolution are important. Therefore, the main objective of this study is a comprehensive exploration of the turbulence evolution in the wind turbine’s wake to identify characteristic turbulence regions. For this, we present an experimental study of three model wind turbine wake scenarios that were scanned with hot-wire anemometry with a very high downstream resolution. The model wind turbine was exposed to three inflows: laminar inflow as a reference case, a central wind turbine wake, and half of the wake of an upstream turbine. A detailed turbulence analysis reveals four downstream turbulence regions by means of the mean velocity, variance, turbulence intensity, energy spectra, integral and Taylor length scales, and the Castaing paramete... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element analysis (FEA), linear actuator, magnetic lead screw (MLS), reluctance lead screw (RLS), wave energy converter (WEC)
A reluctance lead screw (RLS) is proposed in this paper which consists of a rotor and a translator, forming a magnetic device that is able to transfer low-speed linear motion into high-speed rotational motion. Permanent magnets (PMs) are only installed in the rotor, making it more suitable for long-stroke applications. The design aspects are assessed by finite element analysis (FEA) and the performance is evaluated. In addition, the thrust force per magnet volume is presented for evaluating the utilization rate of the PMs. The simulation results show that RLS has an advantage in terms of the PM utilization rate. A new method for realizing spiral magnets has also been developed which can not only reduce the manufacturing difficulties, but also ease the installation work. Finally, based on the simulations and analyses, two RLS prototypes designed for wave energy converters (WECs) are presented to show the potential applications of this novel topology.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass gasification, methanation reaction, Modelling, Optimization, stoichiometric, thermodynamics, water gas shift reactions
To help meet the global demand for energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels, alternatives such as the production of syngas from renewable biomass can be considered. This conversion of biomass to syngas is possible through a thermochemical gasification process. To design such gasification systems, model equations can be formulated and solved to predict the quantity and quality of the syngas produced with different operating conditions (temperature, the flow rate of an oxidizing agent, etc.) and with different types of biomass (wood, grass, seeds, food waste, etc.). For the comparison of multiple different types of biomass and optimization to find optimal conditions, simpler models are preferred which can be solved very quickly using modern desktop computers. In this study, a number of different stoichiometric thermodynamic models are compared to determine which are the most appropriate. To correct some of the errors associated with thermodynamic models, correction factors are utilized... [more]

Keywords: epoxy, nanograting patterns, non-vacuum process, patterned substrate, polyvinyl alcohol, ultrathin polymer solar cells
In this paper, we discuss a method for fabricating an ultrathin polymer substrate with one-dimensional nanograting patterns to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ultrathin polymer solar cells (PSCs) and suppress the dependence on the incident angle of light. Because the fabricating process of the ultrathin polymer substrate was carried out using a solution process, it can be manufactured in a large area, and the PCE of the patterned ultrathin substrate-based PSC is improved by 8.9% compared to the non-patterned device. In addition, triple-patterned ultrathin PSCs incorporating the same nanograting pattern as the substrate were fabricated in the electron transport (ZnO) layer and the photoactive layer (PBDTTT-OFT and PC71BM mixture (ratio-1: 1.5)) to achieve PCE of 10.26%. Thanks to the nanograting pattern introduced in the substrate, ZnO layer, and photoactive layer, it was possible to minimize the PCE change according to the incident angle of light. Moreover, we performe... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion characteristic, cone calorimeter, electrolyte, Lithium-ion battery, low pressure
The electrolyte is one of the components that releases the most heat during the thermal runaway (TR) and combustion process of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Therefore, the thermal hazard of the electrolyte has a significant impact on the safety of LIBs. In this paper, the combustion characteristics of the electrolyte such as parameters of heat release rate (HRR), mass loss rate (MLR) and total heat release (THR) have been investigated and analyzed. In order to meet the current demand of plateau sections with low-pressure and low-oxygen areas on LIBs, an electrolyte with the most commonly used lithium salts, LiPF6, was chosen as the experimental sample. Due to the superior low-temperature performance, an electrolyte containing LiBF4 was also selected to be compared with the LiPF6 sample. Combustion experiments were conducted for electrolyte pool fire under various altitudes. According to the experimental results, both the average and peak values of MLR in the stable combustion stage of... [more]

Maciej Kozak, Jarosław Chmiel
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity, cold ironing, electrochemical corrosion, harbor maintenance management, medium voltage connection
Cold ironing refers to the usage of less polluting power supply sources to deliver electricity to the moored ship. Such a shore-to-ship system is used when the ship is at a port so the auxiliary combustion engines may be turned off. This paper presents the numerical simulation results of a medium voltage cold-ironing system with regard to the currents flowing between the ship’s hull and grounding busbar. The IT electrical inland system with a neutral grounding resistor, as commonly used in shore-to-ship systems, is investigated. Parasitic capacitances present between the phase-to-hull and phase-to-ground in real-world applications can vary from each other. The direct and alternating currents flowing across the hull, seawater and the pier structure are amongst the causes that can lead to premature reinforced concrete degradation. Chosen cases of phase-to-ground or hull unequal capacitances influencing AC stray currents were considered.

Keywords: Biofuels, cell factory, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, yeast morphology, yeast robustness
The present study describes the isolation of the novel strain Candida intermedia CBS 141442 and investigates the potential of this microorganism for the conversion of lignocellulosic streams. Different C. intermedia clones were isolated during an adaptive laboratory evolution experiment under the selection pressure of lignocellulosic hydrolysate and in strong competition with industrial, xylose-fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Isolates showed different but stable colony and cell morphologies when growing in a solid agar medium (smooth, intermediate and complex morphology) and liquid medium (unicellular, aggregates and pseudohyphal morphology). Clones of the same morphology showed similar fermentation patterns, and the C. intermedia clone I5 (CBS 141442) was selected for further testing due to its superior capacity for xylose consumption (90% of the initial xylose concentration within 72 h) and the highest ethanol yields (0.25 ± 0.02 g ethanol/g sugars consumed). Keywords: desanding spiral separator, natural gas hydrate, numerical simulation, reservoir parameters, separation performance
The spiral separator is an important tool for desanding in natural gas hydrate production, and the change of hydrate reservoir parameters has a great impact on spiral separator behavior. Mastering the influence law is helpful to improve the separation performance. Until now, there was still no detailed analysis of the effect mechanism between reservoir parameters and spiral separator behavior. In this paper, a downhole spiral separator was designed. Then, the effects of reservoir parameters (particle size, hydrate, volume fraction, and sand volume fraction) on separation performance (discrete phase distribution, separation efficiency, and differential pressure) with different flow rates were investigated by numerical simulation method Fluent 18.0. The results show that effects degree of reservoir parameters is in order from large to small: sand phase volume fraction, particle size, hydrate volume fraction. As the particle size increases, the separation performance is improved. When the... [more]

Keywords: constant volume combustion vessel, evaporative spray, flame luminosity, flame-wall impinging combustion, visualization experiment
The elementary research of spray and combustion is of great significance to the development of compactness of modern diesel engines. In this paper, three injectors with different nozzle orifice diameters (0.23 mm, 0.27 mm and 0.31 mm) were used to study the diesel spray, ignition and flame-wall impingement visualization experiment. This paper studied the influence of different nozzle sizes on the trends of spray, ignition and flame diffusion under the flame-wall impinging combustion and used the flame luminosity to characterize the soot generation in combustion. By analyzing the quantitative data, such as spray penetration, ignition delay, flame area and flame luminosity systematically, it was shown that the smaller nozzle benefitted diesel combustion to some extent. The 0.23 mm nozzle injector in these experiments had the best fuel-air mixing effect under 800 K. The length of the spray liquid under the 0.23 mm nozzle condition was 19% and 23% shorter than that of 0.27 and 0.31 mm, res... [more]

Keywords: assembly consistency, diesel engine, NOx emissions, numerical simulation
The assembly consistency of a diesel engine will affect its nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission variation. In order to improve the NOx emissions of diesel engines, a study was carried out based on the assembly tolerance variation of the diesel engine’s combustion system. Firstly, a diesel engine which meets the Euro VI standards together with the experimental data is obtained. The mesh model and combustion model of the engine combustion system are built in the Converge software (version 2.4, Tecplot, Bellevue, DC, USA), and the experimental data is used to calibrate the combustion model obtained in the Converge software. Then, the four-factor and three-level orthogonal simulation experiments are carried out on the dimension parameters that include nozzle extension height, throat diameter, shrinkage diameter and combustion chamber depth. Through mathematical analysis on the experimental data, the results show that the variation of nozzle extension height and combustion chamber depth have a s... [more]

Keywords: changeover operating method, field test, hybrid geothermal heat pump system, performance prediction
The installation and operation of geothermal systems increased due to the expectation of good cooling and heating performance due to stable heat source temperatures. In actual geothermal system operations, heat source temperature rises or falls due to an imbalance of heating and cooling energy usage. Problems of source side temperature result in reduced geothermal system performance. The purpose of this study is to develop hybrid geothermal system operation technology to stabilize temperature and improve system performance by utilizing auxiliary heat source system. The auxiliary heat source system is operated by comparing the performance when operating the geothermal heat pump system alone and the performance when operating the hybrid geothermal heat pump system. The performance of a hybrid geothermal system is determined by the circulating water temperature of the geothermal system and the circulating water temperature of the auxiliary heat source system. Keywords: diesel engine, exhaust gas recirculation, nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller, variable geometry turbine
In this paper, a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (NLADRC) strategy based on nonlinear extended state observer (NLESO) is proposed to solve the unmodeled dynamics, coupling and disturbance due to change of working point in the variable geometry turbine (VGT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, so as to achieve accurate control of intake manifold pressure and mass air flow in a diesel engine. To achieve decoupling, the double-input double-output (DIDO) VGT-EGR system is decomposed into two single-input single-output (SISO) subsystems, and each subsystem has a separate nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller. At the same time, the convergence proof of the designed NLESO is also given theoretically. Finally, the NLADRC controller is compared with linear active disturbance rejection controller and proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. Through simulation, it is indicated that the proposed NLADRC controller has better transient response performanc... [more]

Keywords: core–shell, metal oxide, oxygen carrier, perovskite, reverse water–gas shift chemical looping (RWGS-CL)
Reverse water−gas shift chemical looping (RWGS-CL) offers a promising means of converting the greenhouse gas of CO2 to CO because of its relatively low operating temperatures and high CO selectivity without any side product. This paper introduces a core−shell structured oxygen carrier for RWGS-CL. The prepared oxygen carrier consists of a metal oxide core and perovskite shell, which was confirmed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), XPS, and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) measurements. The perovskite-structured shell of the prepared oxygen carrier facilitates the formation and consumption of oxygen defects in the metal oxide core during H2-CO2 redox looping cycles. As a result, amounts of CO produced per unit weight of the core−shell structured oxygen carriers were higher than that of a simple perovskite oxygen carrier. Of the metal oxide cores tested, CeO2, NiO, Co3O4, and Co3O4-NiO, La0.75Sr0.25FeO3-encapsulat... [more]

Bartosz Łamasz, Natalia Iwaszczuk
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil price risk, implied volatility, vertical spread option strategies
This paper aims to analyze the impact of implied volatility on the costs, break-even points (BEPs), and the final results of the vertical spread option strategies (vertical spreads). We considered two main groups of vertical spreads: with limited and unlimited profits. The strategy with limited profits was divided into net credit spread and net debit spread. The analysis takes into account West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil options listed on New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) from 17 November 2008 to 15 April 2020. Our findings suggest that the unlimited vertical spreads were executed with profits less frequently than the limited vertical spreads in each of the considered categories of implied volatility. Nonetheless, the advantage of unlimited strategies was observed for substantial oil price movements (above 10%) when the rates of return on these strategies were higher than for limited strategies. With small price movements (lower than 5%), the net credit spread strategies wer... [more]

Keywords: cable rating, electric cables, finite difference method, finite element method, harmonic distortion, heat transfer, probabilistic models, thermal model
The conceptual assessment of the rating conditions of power cables was addressed over one century ago, with theories based on the physical and heat transfer properties of the power cable installed in a given medium. During the years, the evolution of the computational methods and technologies has made more powerful means for executing the calculations available. More detailed configurations have been analysed, also moving from the steady-state to dynamic rating assessment. The research is in progress, with recent advances obtained on both advanced models, extensive calculations from 2D and 3D finite element methods, simplified approaches aimed at reducing the computational burden, and dedicated solutions for specific types of cables and applications. This paper provides a general overview that links the fundamental concepts of heat transfer for the calculation of cable rating to the advanced solutions that have emerged in the last years.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chevron angle, correlations, friction factor, heat transfer, Nusselt number, shell-and-plate heat exchanger
An experimental study regarding the thermofluid characteristics of a shell-and-plate heat exchanger with different chevron angles (45°/45°, 45°/65°, and 65°/65°) with a plate diameter of 440 mm was carried out. Water was used as the working fluid on both sides and the corresponding temperatures ranged from 30−70 °C. The flow rate on the plate or shell side ranged from 10−60 m3/h. The effects of chevron angles on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of shell-and-plate heat exchangers were studied in detail. With regard to the heat transfer performance on the plate side, a higher chevron angle (65°/65°) resulted in a significantly better performance than a low chevron angle (45°/45°). The effect of the chevron angle became even more pronounced at high Reynolds numbers. Unlike the plate side, an increase in the chevron angle had a negative effect on the heat transfer performance of the shell side. Additionally, this opposite effect was more prominent at low Reynolds numbers du... [more]
Buckling Analysis for Wind Turbine Tower Design: Thrust Load versus Compression Load Based on Energy Method

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buckling, combined load, energy method, finite element method, riks method, shell structure, wind turbine tower
Tubular steel towers are the most common design solution for supporting medium-to-high-rise wind turbines. Notwithstanding, historical failure incidence records reveal buckling modes as a common type of failure of shell structures. It is thus necessary to revisit the towers’ performance against bending-compression interactions that could unchain buckling modes. The present investigation scrutinises buckling performances of a cylindrical steel shell under combined load, by means of the energy method. Within the proposed framework, the differential equations to obtain dimensionless expressions showed the energy-displacement relations taking place along the shell surface. Furthermore, shell models integrated with initial imperfection have been embedded into finite element algorithms based on the Riks method. The results show buckling evolution paths largely affected by bending moments lead to section distortions (oval-shaped) that in turn change the strain energy dissipation routine and s... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mining, dynamic properties, longitudinal swing, shearer traction unit
Shearer traction failure occurs frequently, which seriously restricts the safe and efficient mining of coal. However, the influence of the shearer’s posture on traction has not been fully considered in the existing research. To improve traction reliability: the dynamic model of the traction unit is established considering longitudinal swing; the walking characteristics of the shearer and the dynamics of the traction unit are analyzed; and the influences of traction velocity, drum load cutting arm angle, and depression angle are discussed. The results show that the longitudinal swing is reciprocating and the positive swing is more serious. With the increase of the traction velocity, the walking stability of the shearer decreases while the contact force increases, especially the support slipper. The longitudinal swing increases with the increase of lateral load, but the supporting force of the support slipper decreases with the increase of cutting load. The forces of the walking wheel an... Keywords: energy structure decomposition, Hybrid Input-Output Analysis, RAS method, regional energy consumption
Different regions in China have different energy consumption characteristics and changing trends. This paper focuses on analyzing trends in energy consumption changes along the timeline for 30 regions in China. Using the Hybrid Input-Output Model, this paper decomposes energy consumption in 30 regions in 2007, 2012 and 2016 into energy embedded of final consumption expenditure, gross capital formation, inflow and outflow. We use these four dimensions as coordinates to draw a regional radar map. According to the changing characteristics of the radar map, 30 regions are divided into three groups. By analyzing the reasons for the changes in three regions, we draw the following conclusions. For regions where energy consumption is mainly inflow, the economically developed regions have to form a low energy consumption environment while achieving economic growth. The economically underdeveloped regions need to carry out energy conservation and emission reduction as well as ensuring the level... [more]
