A Novel Ground-Source Heat Pump with R744 and R1234ze as Refrigerants
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, energy saving, geothermal, heat pump, historic building, R1234ze, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy-saving potential of heat pump technology is widely recognized in the building sector. In retrofit applications, especially in old and historic buildings, it may be difficult to replace the existing distribution and high-temperature emission systems. Often, historical buildings, especially the listed ones, cannot be thermally insulated; this leads to high temperatures of the heat carrier fluid for heating. In these cases, the main limits are related, on the one hand, to the reaching of the required temperatures, and on the other hand, to the obtaining of good performance even at high temperatures. To address these problems, a suitable solution can be a two-stage heat pump. In this work, a novel concept of a two-stage heat pump is proposed, based on a transcritical cycle that uses the natural fluid R744 (carbon dioxide) with an ejector system. The second refrigerant present in the heat pump and used for the high-temperature stage is the R1234ze, which is an HFO (hydrofluoro-ol... [more]

The Current State of the Engineering Method for the Optimal Gas-Dynamic Design and Calculation of Centrifugal Compressor
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, impeller, loading factor, loss coefficient, mathematical modeling, turbocharger
In the practice of centrifugal compressor designing, different engineering techniques are widely used because flow motion differential equations cannot be integrated, and Computational fluid dynamics cannot resolve the problem as a whole. Engineering personal computers’ programs are based on experimental data and the gas dynamics theory. The universal modeling method’s (UMM) mathematical model is a set of equations that determine the pressure loss in the elements of the centrifugal compressor flow path. By the earlier versions of the UMM, dozens of process compressors were designed. Several sets of empirical coefficients for stages of different specific speeds were applied. The paper presents the current state of the universal modeling method that was recently improved. The models of the centrifugal compressor characteristic calculation are described. A new model of the loading factor characteristic, an improved version of the compressor efficiency, and being based on a CFD-calculation... [more]

Pulse Discharging of Sodium-Oxygen Batteries to Enhance Cathode Utilization
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cathode utilization, electrochemical protocols, pulse discharging, sodium superoxide, sodium-oxygen battery
Using sodium metal in sodium-oxygen batteries with aprotic electrolyte enables achieving a very high theoretical energy density. However, the promised values for energy density and capacity are not met in practical studies yet due to poor utilization of the void space in the cathode during battery discharge. In this work, we achieve better cathode utilization and higher discharge capacities by using pulse discharging. We optimize the chosen resting-to-pulse times, the applied current density, and elucidate that three-dimensional cathode materials yield higher capacities compared to two-dimensional ones. By implication, the pulse discharging mode ensures better supply with dissolved oxygen within the cathode. The higher amount of dissolved oxygen accumulated during the resting period after a current pulse is essential to form more of the discharge product, i.e., the metal oxide sodium superoxide. Interestingly, we show for the first time that the superoxide is deposited in a very unusua... [more]

Optimisation Study of Co Deposition on Chars from MAP of Waste Tyres as Green Electrodes in ORR for Alkaline Fuel Cells
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cobalt, electrodeposition, ORR, waste-tyres
Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) catalysts, from waste automobile tyres obtained from Microwave assisted pyrolysis (MAP), were enriched with Co and Cu using the simple treatments sonochemical and electrochemical deposition. Catalytic activity was evaluated through onset potential and number of exchanged electrons measurements. Electrochemical data demonstrate an improvement in catalytic activity of the electrochemical modified char with Co. Char electrodes enriched with Co show a maximum positive shift of 40 mV with respect to raw char electrodes with a number of exchanged electrons per O2 molecule close to 4 (as for Pt) for the best sample. This corresponds to a reduction of the production of unwanted oxygen peroxide from 23% for raw char to 1%. Sample structure evolution before and after electrochemical deposition and electro-catalysis was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy and XPS. Such electrochemical treatments open new possibilities of refining waste chars a... [more]

Diagnosing Hydraulic Fracture Geometry, Complexity, and Fracture Wellbore Connectivity Using Chemical Tracer Flowback
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical tracer, fracture wellbore connectivity, hydraulic fracture diagnostics
The productivity of a hydraulically fractured well depends on the fracture geometry and fracture−wellbore connectivity. Unlike other fracture diagnostics techniques, flowback tracer response will be dominated only by the fractures, which are open and connected to the wellbore. Single well chemical tracer field tests have been used for hydraulic fracture diagnostics to estimate the stagewise production contribution. In this study, a chemical tracer flowback analysis is presented to estimate the fraction of the created fracture area, which is open and connected to the wellbore. A geomechanics coupled fluid flow and tracer transport model is developed to analyze the impact of (a) fracture geometry, (b) fracture propagation and closure effects, and (c) fracture complexity on the tracer response curves. Tracer injection and flowback in a complex fracture network is modeled with the help of an effective model. Multiple peaks in the tracer response curves can be explained by the closure of ac... A New Virtual Synchronous Generator Design Based on the SMES System for Frequency Stability of Low-Inertia Power Grids
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-penetration renewable energy, hybrid power system, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), virtual synchronous generator (VSG)
In light of the challenges of integrating more renewable energy sources (RESs) into the utility grid, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) will become an indispensable configuration of modern power systems. RESs are gradually replacing the conventional synchronous generators that are responsible for supplying the utility grid with the inertia damping properties, thus renewable power grids are more vulnerable to disruption than traditional power grids. Therefore, the VSG is presented to mimic the behavior of a real synchronous generator in the power grid through the virtual rotor concept (i.e., which emulates the properties of inertia and damping) and virtual primary and secondary controls (i.e., which emulate the conventional frequency control loops). However, inadequate imitation of the inertia power owing to the low and short-term power of the energy storage systems (ESSs) may cause system instability and fail dramatically. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes a VSG based o... [more]

An Exploratory Economic Analysis of Underground Pumped-Storage Hydro Power Plants in Abandoned Deep Coal Mines
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal mining, economic viability, Germany, hydro power, massive energy storage, pumped storage, reservoir engineering, temporal arbitrage
This study researches the concept of underground pumped-storage hydro power plants in closed-down underground hard coal mines in Germany. After a review on how this could be realized technically, an economic feasibility analysis is presented, with a particular focus on the costs for the underground storage reservoir. The analysis is performed for different lower (i.e., underground) reservoir sizes and temporal arbitrage potentials (peak/off-peak electricity price spreads), and cost uncertainty is dealt with by means of a Monte Carlo simulation for two distinct head heights. The findings regarding costs and acceptability are compared with those of a classic (on-surface) pumped-storage hydro power plant in a mountainous area. Based on a techno-economic evaluation we conclude that under favorable conditions the realization of underground pumped-storage hydro power (UPSHP) plants seems both technically feasible and economically reasonable. More specifically, an extension of a tubular syste... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: public perspectives, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy development, utility ratepayer perceptions
The state of New York has ambitious mandates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing renewable energy generation. Solar energy will play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the electric energy sector. Concerns over solar installations’ impacts to host communities and the environment have led to growing conflicts over solar energy siting on Long Island, in other parts of New York, and throughout the US. Understanding community members’ perspectives is critical for reducing conflict. Solar energy can be deployed more quickly and at lower cost if projects are structured to address the concerns and meet the needs of the community. This paper presents the results of a survey of residential utility ratepayers that examined their perceptions, preferences, and priorities concerning mid- to large-scale solar development on Long Island (250 kW and larger). April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioenergy, biofuel, Biomass, hydrolysis, pretreatment, sonochemistry, sugarcane bagasse
Ultrasonic irradiation is known to enhance various physicochemical processes. In this work, the effect of ultrasound on the dissolution of sugarcane bagasse was studied, with the specific aims of quantifying the effect at low solids loading and mild reaction conditions, and determining whether the enhancement of dissolution by ultrasound is independent of temperature. The effects of agitation speed, reaction time, and sonication were examined on the dissolution of the biomass substrate at varying reaction temperatures during the pretreatment process. Sugarcane bagasse was mixed with a 0.3 M solution of sulfuric acid in a reaction vessel to undergo pretreatment. A kinetic model was applied to the mass dissolution of the biomass, as sonicated runs showed higher mass losses at each reaction time, compared to the non-sonicated runs. The ultrasonic enhancement in mass dissolution was seen to increase for an increase in the reaction time. It was observed that the induction period for the dis... [more]

Analysis of Wind Turbine Aging through Operation Curves
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: performance analysis, technical systems aging, wind energy, wind turbines
The worsening with age of technical systems performance is a matter of fact which is particularly timely to analyze for horizontal-axis wind turbines because they constitute a mature technology. On these grounds, the present study deals with the assessment of wind turbine performance decline with age. The selected test case is a Vestas V52 wind turbine, installed in 2005 at the Dundalk Institute of Technology campus in Ireland. Operation data from 2008 to 2019 have been used for this study. The general idea is analyzing the appropriate operation curves for each working region of the wind turbine: in Region 2 (wind speed between 5 and 9 m/s), the generator speed−power curve is studied, because the wind turbine operates at fixed pitch. In Region 2 12 (wind speed between 9 and 13 m/s), the generator speed is rated and the pitch control is relevant: therefore, the pitch angle−power curve is analyzed. Using a support vector regression for the operation curves of interest, it is observed tha... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodegradation scales, Bolivar Coastal Complex, mixed oils, QEDA analysis, source facies
The organic geochemical features of 30 sampled oils from the northern Bolivar Coastal Complex (Lake Maracaibo Basin, NW Venezuela) were examined by combining carbon isotope, classical biomarker, and extended diamondoid analyses to clarify source facies and to assess the thermal maturity and extent of biodegradation of the oils analyzed. In this work, oils are understood as a mixture of two episodes of petroleum generation from the La Luna Formation: a paleobiodegraded oil pulse during Paleogene times and a late pulse having a higher maturity in the post-Oligocene. For the oil samples analyzed, results revealed a mixing composed of different proportions of almost a terrestrially derived siliciclastic-sourced and a purely marine carbonate-sourced oil pulse. Moreover, two main groups of oils were identified by means of hierarchical cluster analysis. Finally, inter- and intrafield variations in the extent of biodegradation were also assessed using two classification schemes (Peters and Mol... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: large eddy simulation, low Reynolds number airfoil, OpenFOAM, WALE model, wind turbine aerodynamics
A numerical framework for the aerodynamic characterization of wind turbine airfoils is developed and applied to the miniature wind turbine WiRE-01. The framework is based on a coupling between wall-resolved large eddy simulation (LES) and application of the blade element momentum theory (BEM). It provides not only results for the airfoil aerodynamics but also for the wind turbine, and allows to cover a large range of turbine operating conditions with a minimized computational cost. In order to provide the accuracy and the flexibility needed, the unstructured finite volume method (FVM) and the wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model are used within the OpenFOAM toolbox. With the purpose of representing the turbulence experienced by the blade sections of the turbine, a practical turbulent inflow is proposed and the effect of the inflow turbulence on the airfoil aerodynamic performance is studied. It is found that the consideration of the inflow turbulence has a strong effect on t... [more]

Boosting Energy Efficiency and Solar Energy inside the Residential, Commercial, and Public Services Sectors in Mexico
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercial and public services, Energy Efficiency, GHG mitigation, residential, solar energy
The residential, commercial, and public sectors consume between 20% and 30% of final energy demand worldwide. Due to the intensive use of fossil fuels and conventional electricity, they also have an important participation in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Taking Mexico as a case study, this article develops an alternative scenario that considers that in these sectors, buildings can generate energy for self-consumption or to supply it to the power network—for which four solar energy options are analyzed. In addition, to manage and rationalize the energy demand of these buildings, eight energy efficiency measures are studied. These options were selected on the basis that they are technically and economically feasible to implement in buildings in Mexico. The results reveal that by 2030, in relation to the GHG trend scenario, this mitigation scenario reduces 23.5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in the residential (19 MtCO2e), commercial (2.6 MtCO2e), and public... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression gain, computational complexity, coulomb counting, curve fitting, estimation error, event-driven processing, Li-ion battery, open circuit voltage, state of charge
Lithium-ion batteries are deployed in a range of modern applications. Their utilization is evolving with the aim of achieving a greener environment. Batteries are costly, and battery management systems (BMSs) ensure long life and proper battery utilization. Modern BMSs are complex and cause a notable overhead consumption on batteries. In this paper, the time-varying aspect of battery parameters is used to reduce the power consumption overhead of BMSs. The aim is to use event-driven processing to realize effective BMSs. Unlike the conventional approach, parameters of battery cells, such as voltages and currents, are no longer regularly measured at a predefined time step and are instead recorded on the basis of events. This renders a considerable real-time compression. An inventive event-driven coulomb counting method is then presented, which employs the irregularly sampled data information for an effective online state of charge (SOC) determination. Properties of Vacuum Arcs Generated by Switching RMF Contacts at Different Ignition Positions
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: optical diagnostics, switching arc, vacuum interrupter
The influence of initiation behavior of the drawn arc on the arc motion, on arc characteristics during the active phase, as well as on the post-arc parameters, was studied. The study was focused on arc dynamics, determination of the anode surface temperature after current interruption, and diagnostics of metal vapor density after current zero crossing. Different optical diagnostics, namely high-speed camera video enhanced by narrow-band optical filters, near infrared spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy was applied. The initiation behavior of the drawn arc had a clear influence on arc parameters. Higher local electrode temperature occurs in case of the electrodes with ignition point near the outer electrode boundary. This further causes an enhanced density of chromium vapor, even in cases with lower arc duration. The results of this study are important for design development of switching RMF contacts for future green energy applications.

Keywords: Bayer and Hanck, bootstrap ARDL, CO2 emission, oil price, Turkey
The main objective of this research was to test the effect of oil prices, renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, and economic growth on Turkey’s carbon emissions by using three co-integration tests, namely, the newly-developed bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) testing technique as proposed by (McNown et al., 2018); the new approach involving the Bayer−Hanck (2013) combined co-integration test; and the H-J (2008) co-integration technique, which induces two dates of structural breaks. The autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), and fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) approaches were utilized to test the long-run interaction between the examined variables. The Granger causality (GC) analysis was utilized to investigate the direction of causality among the variables. Energy Saving through Efficient BOG Prediction and Impact of Static Boil-off-Rate in Full Containment-Type LNG Storage Tank
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BOG, BOR, liquefaction, LNG storage tank, Natural Gas, regasification
Boil-off gas (BOG) from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank depends on the amount of heat leakage however, its assessment often relies on the static value of the boil-off rate (BOR) suggested by the LNG tank vendors that over/under predicts BOG generation. Thus, the impact of static BOR on BOG predictions is investigated and the results suggest that BOR is a strong function of liquid level in a tank. Total heat leakage in a tank practically remains constant, nonetheless the unequal distribution of heat in vapor and liquid gives variation in BOR. Assigning the total tank heat leak to the liquid is inappropriate since a part of heat increases vapor temperature. At the lower liquid level, BOG is under-predicted and at a higher level, it is over-predicted using static BOR. Simulation results show that BOR varies from 0.012 wt% per day for an 80% tank fill to 0.12 wt% per day at 10% tank fill.
