The Power and Efficiency Analyses of the Cylindrical Cavity Receiver on the Solar Stirling Engine
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cavity receiver, efficiency, heat loss analysis, performance simulation, power, solar Stirling engine
The technique of solar dish and Stirling engine combination is the most challenging and promising one. For the efficient conversion of the externally concentrated heat to the usable power, we studied the influences of the wall temperature, inclination angle, and open area ratio of the receiver on the Stirling engine power and efficiency. The theoretical analysis of the heat exchange element of the solar Stirling engine was performed, and the simulation model of the cavity absorber was built and analyzed. The temperature cloud and heat loss trends of the receiver under different wall temperatures, inclination angles, and opening ratios were illustrated. When the wall temperature of the absorber changes from 700 to 1000 K, the efficiency of the engine has increased by 8.8% from 21.34% to 30.11%. The higher the temperature, the higher the efficiency. As the inclination angle of the absorber increases from 0° to 60°, the efficiency of the engine is increased by 7.7% from 21.1% to 28.8%. Wi... [more]

Design Analysis of Micro Gas Turbines in Closed Cycles
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: closed cycle gas turbine, design of compressors, design of turbines, different working fluids, thermodynamic analysis
The problems faced by designers of micro-turbines are connected with a very small volume flow rate of working media which leads to small blade heights and a high rotor speed. In the case of gas turbines this limitation can be overcome by the application of a closed cycle with very low pressure at the compressor inlet (lower than atmospheric pressure). In this way we may apply a micro gas turbine unit of accepted efficiency to work in a similar range of temperatures and the same pressure ratios, but in the range of smaller pressure values and smaller mass flow rate. Thus, we can obtain a gas turbine of a very small output but of the efficiency typical of gas turbines with a much higher power. In this paper, the results of the thermodynamic calculations of the turbine cycles are discussed and the designed gas turbine flow parts are presented. Suggestions of the design solutions of micro gas turbines for different values of power output are proposed. This new approach to gas turbine arran... [more]

Simplified Assessment on the Wind Farm Noise Impact of the E2O Experimental Offshore Station in the Asturian Coast
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: E2O Offshore Experimental Station, noise impact, offshore wind farm, propagation, wind turbines
This paper presents a preliminary evaluation of the acoustic impact of an offshore experimental wind farm (E2O), conceived and planned to be installed in Asturias on Spain’s northwest coast. A simplified assessment of the wind turbines’ noise impact at an offshore platform was performed numerically, adapting commercial software for room acoustics to this particular application. As a result, the sound levels at specific receiver sites on the coastline were estimated to select the most convenient level between the two possible locations. Parameters from acoustic emission data of the selected wind turbines were introduced as inputs to the simulation, and the noise propagation in the analyzed domains (for different values of their basic parameters) was simulated. Complementarily, the numerical results were compared to calculations following the ISO 9613-2 standard on sound propagation outdoors for validation purposes, showing good overall agreement. The results revealed that both projected... [more]

Study on the Entropy Generation Distribution Characteristics of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell System under Different CO2 Enrichment Conditions
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, entropy generation, exergy destruction, molten carbonate fuel cell
The efficient and clean use of fuel is very important for the sustainable development of energy. In this article, a numerical study of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) unit is carried out, and the source, distribution, and extent of six irreversible losses (fluid friction loss, mass transfer loss, ohmic loss, activation loss, heat transfer loss, the coupling loss between heat and mass transfer) are described and quantified. The effects of the operation temperature, current density, CO2 concentration, and cathode CO2 utilization rate on the exergy destruction and exergy efficiency during the power generation process are investigated. The results show that the main source of entropy generation in MCFC is the potential difference, which affects the ohmic and activation entropy generation, especially when the CO2 concentration is very low. The second is the temperature gradient, which causes the entropy production of the heat transfer. With the rise of the CO2 concentration at the cathode... [more]

An Overview on Energy and Development of Energy Integration in Major South Asian Countries: The Building Sector
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buildings energy consumption, ECPC, GDP, HDI, renewable energy resources
India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh (IPB) are the largest South Asian countries in terms of land area, gross domestic product (GDP), and population. The growth in these countries is impacted by inadequate renewable energy policy and implementation over the years, resulting in slow progress towards human development and economic sustainability. These developing countries are blessed with huge potential for renewable energy resources; however, they still heavily rely on fossil fuels (93%). IPB is a major contributor to the total energy consumption of the world and its most energy-intensive building sector (India 47%, Pakistan 55% and Bangladesh 55%) displays inadequate energy performance. This paper comprehensively reviews the energy mix and consumption in IPB with special emphasis on current policies and its impact on economic and human development. The main performance indicators have been critically analyzed for the period 1970−2017. The strength of this paper is a broad overview on energ... [more]

Influence of the Use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Systems in Woodchippers Powered by Small Engines on Exhaust Emissions and Operating Costs
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, liquefied petroleum gas LPG, small engine, toxic exhaust gases emission, woodchipper
The use of alternative fuels is a contemporary trend in science aimed at the protection of non-renewable resources, reducing the negative impact on people and reducing the negative impact on the natural environment. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is an alternative fuel within the meaning of the European Union Directive (2014/94/UE), as it is an alternative for energy sources derived from crude oil. The use of LPG fuel in low-power internal combustion engines is one of the currently developed scientific research directions. It results from the possibility of limiting air pollutant emissions compared to the commonly used gasoline and the lower cost of this fuel in many countries. By “gasoline 95” the Authors mean non-lead petrol as a flammable liquid that is used primarily as a fuel in most spark-ignited internal combustion engines, whereas 95 is an octane rating (octane number). This article presents the results of research on fuel consumption, toxic exhaust gas emission, and operating c... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery degradation, demand response, electric vehicle integration
The increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to increased global expectations that the application of this technology may result in the reduction of CO2 emissions through the replacement of conventional petrol vehicles and ensure the flexibility of power systems such as batteries. In this paper, we propose a residential demand response (DR) evaluation model that considers the degradation mechanism of the EV battery and examines the effective battery operation. We adopted the already-proposed NiMnCo battery degradation model to develop an EV DR evaluation model. In this model, the battery operation is optimized to minimize the electricity and degradation costs affected by ambient temperature, battery state of charge (SOC), and depth of discharge. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the relevant parameters on the economics of the DR of EV batteries for 10 all-electric detached houses with photovoltaic system assuming multiple EV driving patterns and battery (dis)ch... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, Biomass, culture, cyanobacteria, growth, lipid, nitrogen
Metabolic products such as lipids and proteins produced in cyanobacteria represent an excellent source of biomass and do not compete with agricultural land use unlike soybean and corn. Given their potential use as novel materials for biodiesel production, we aimed to explore the effect of cultivation period and nitrogen concentration on the growth rate and lipid content of Fremyella diplosiphon, a model cyanobacterium. In this study, F. diplosiphon grown in BG11/HEPES medium supplemented with 1.5 g L−1 sodium nitrate (NaNO3) for 7, 10, 15, and 20 days were compared to the untreated control in media amended with 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g L−1 NaNO3. Cultures were inoculated in liquid media and grown under continuous fluorescent light in an orbital incubator shaker, and extracted lipids subjected to gravimetric analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy to determine the best culture conditions for lipid production. Our results demonstrated that a reduction in nitrogen concentration had... [more]

“Fast Track” Analysis of Small Wind Turbine Blade Performance
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BEM, blade design, rapid prototyping, small wind turbine (SWT), wind tunnel test
Small wind turbines (SWTs) can be significantly sensitive to variances in the blade geometry shape when their operation in relatively low ranges of Reynolds numbers is considered. An SWT case study, where an existing wind turbine prototype was equipped with a redesigned blade set, to increase its aerodynamic efficiency, is presented. The geometry modification process was targeted at maximizing the turbine power coefficient in the presumed point of low Reynolds operation. The applied design and analysis methods included practical implementation of previously established “Fast Track” procedure for wind turbine development. A newly prepared blade geometry and a reference blade set were examined numerically and experimentally. Selected design and assessment processes were supposed to be low resource demanding, making them possibly highly applicable in renewable energy industry. Therefore, the numerical analysis of both geometries was based on BEM (blade element momentum theory) equations.... [more]

SEPIC Converter with an LC Regenerative Snubber for EV Applications
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle, EMI suppression, regenerative snubber, SEPIC converter, snubber circuit
A Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Converter (SEPIC) converter with an Inductor-Capacitor (LC) regenerative snubber is proposed to reduce Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) for Electric Vehicle (EV) applications. The switching energy is transferred through a capacitor to an inductor which is coupled to SEPIC inductors. This technique reduces the number of components and also returns some of switching energy to SEPIC converter. The mathematical analysis and optimization of LC snubber with respect to number of turns is also presented. Spice simulations and experimental results are provided to verify its performance. The proposed LC regenerative snubber reduces the peak voltage by 16 V on the switching transistor during the switching transient. It is also indicated that 8 dB reduction is achieved in the EMI measurements at ringing frequency and 10 dB reduction at high frequency band.

Field Test of Wind Power Output Fluctuation Control Using an Energy Storage System on Jeju Island
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system, fluctuation control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small power system, wind power generation
At present, renewable energy installations are expanding to solve both environmental problems and expensive energy fuel import prices in isolated areas. However, in a small-scale power system, rapid output fluctuations of renewable energy may cause power quality problems such as voltage and frequency fluctuations in the power system. To solve this problem, the local government of Jeju Island in South Korea implemented a megawatt (MW)-class pilot project to stabilize the output power of wind turbines using an energy storage system (ESS). In this project, a 0.5 MWh lithium-ion battery was connected to a 3 MW wind turbine via 1 MW power conversion system (PCS). In this paper, the field test results were divided into four categories as follows. First, the performance of stabilizing the output of the wind turbine using ESS was confirmed. Second, the control performance of the ESS was confirmed when the wind turbine suddenly stopped due to an accident. Third, it was confirmed that the ESS di... [more]

Resonant Combustion Start Considering Potential Energy of Free-Piston Engine Generator
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion starting, free-piston engine, linear motor, mechanical energy, mechanical resonance, potential energy
Free-piston engine generators without a crank mechanism are expected to be used in series hybrid vehicles because of their lower losses. The series hybrid system requires a low starting thrust because the engine frequently starts depending on the battery state. This study clarifies the effectiveness of the constant thrust resonance starting method that utilizes the compression pressure of the engine and the spring thrust. The piston must pass the combustion starting point with a predetermined speed to start combustion. Herein, we present a thrust setting method that uses the energy state diagram to optimize the velocity at the combustion start point. A simulation is performed assuming output when mounted on a vehicle. Consequently, the simulation results show that the maximum thrust can be reduced by more than 90% compared to that without resonance. Moreover, the speed at the combustion start point is in agreement with the value obtained using an energy state diagram. An impulse-like c... [more]

Aerodynamic Analysis of Coning Effects on the DTU 10 MW Wind Turbine Rotor
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic, cone, wind turbine
The size of wind turbine rotors is still rapidly increasing, though many technical challenges emerge. Novel rotor designs emerge to satisfy this up-scale trend, such as downwind load-aligned concepts, which orients the loads along the blade spanwise to greatly decrease the bending moments at the root. As the studies on the aerodynamics of these rotor concepts using 3D body-fitted mesh are very limited, this paper establishes different cone configurations based on the DTU 10 MW reference rotor and conducts a series of simulations. It is found that the cone angle and the distance from the blade section to the tip vortex are two deterministic factors on conning. Upwind rotors have larger power output, less thrust, smaller wake deficit, and smaller influencing area than downwind rotors of the same size, which provides superior aerodynamic priority and benefits wind farm design. The largest upwind cone angle of 14.03°, among the cases studied, leads to the highest torque to thrust ratio whi... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: development, efficiency, management, promotion, renewable energy sources
Stable and sustainable economic development—including that of renewable energy resources (RES)—requires institutional support of an environment that would enable market operations, and support them in case they are ineffective. Innovation brokers, including structured technology transfer networks, play a key role in promoting, disseminating, and liaising between the parties in the RES sector. The aim of the paper is to present the structure of events used to promote RES in Europe by the Enterprise Europe Network in the years 2017−2018; to verify whether the type of promotion instrument used is significantly related to the location of the events organized; to research whether the selection of the supporting partner is determined by the organized event’s geographical location. The analysis is carried out by means of an empirical study of the network of innovation brokers, i.e., the Enterprise Europe Network. April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon monoxide, finite rate chemistry (FRC), fuel staging, gas turbine, large-eddy simulations (LES), part load
This work contributes to the understanding of mechanisms that lead to increased carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in gas turbine combustion systems. Large-eddy simulations (LES) of a full scale high pressure prototype Siemens gas turbine combustor at three staged part load operating conditions are presented, demonstrating the ability to predict carbon monoxide pollutants from a complex technical system by investigating sources of incomplete CO oxidation. Analytically reduced chemistry is applied for the accurate pollutant prediction together with the dynamic thickened flame model. LES results show that carbon monoxide emissions at the probe location are predicted in good agreement with the available test data, indicating two operating points with moderate pollutant levels and one operating point with CO concentrations below 10 ppm. Large mixture inhomogeneities are identified in the combustion chamber for all operating points. The investigation of mixture formation indicates that fue... [more]

Prediction of Novel Humified Gas Turbine Cycle Parameters for Ammonia/Hydrogen Fuels
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, ammonia/hydrogen blends, humified gas turbine, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Carbon emissions reduction via the increase of sustainable energy sources in need of storage defines chemicals such as ammonia as one of the promising solutions for reliable power decarbonisation. However, the implementation of ammonia for fuelling purposes in gas turbines for industry and energy production is challenging when compared to current gas turbines fuelled with methane. One major concern is the efficiency of such systems, as this has direct implications in the profitability of these power schemes. Previous works performed around parameters prediction of standard gas turbine cycles showed that the implementation of ammonia/hydrogen as a fuel for gas turbines presents very limited overall efficiencies. Therefore, this paper covers a new approach of parameters prediction consisting of series of analytical and numerical studies used to determine emissions and efficiencies of a redesigned Brayton cycle fuelled with humidified ammonia/hydrogen blends. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: green grinding, heat transfer performance, rotating heat pipe, volume of fluid
Coolants are widely used to dissipate grinding heat in conventional grinding. This process, however, is not satisfactory as coolants often lose efficacy in grinding due to film boiling and can result in adverse health and environment effects. The present paper put forward the concept of a rotating heat pipe grinding wheel, attempting to reduce or eliminate the coolant amount and realize green machining. The heat transfer performance of rotating heat pipe grinding wheel was studied by using volume of fluid method in ANSYS/FLUENT. The influence of the input heat flux, filling ratio and rotational speed were investigated by a simulation method. Results show that the appropriate heat flux range for the rotating heat pipe grinding wheel was from 2000 to 100,000 W/m2, the ideal filling ratio was 50% and the rise of the rotational speed turned out to weaken the heat transfer coefficient. Finally, dry grinding experiments on Ti-6Al-4V were performed and the temperatures in both the rotating he... [more]

Keywords: breakwater, hybrid wave energy device, hydrodynamic performance, Wave Energy, wave tank experiments
In this paper, a hybrid system integrating a fixed breakwater and an oscillating buoy type wave energy converter (WEC) is introduced. The energy converter is designed to extract the wave power by making use of the wave-induced heave motions of the three floating pontoons in front of the fixed breakwater. A preliminary experimental study is carried out to discuss the hydrodynamic performance of the hybrid system under the action of regular waves. A scale model was built in the laboratory at Hohai University, and the dissipative force from racks and gearboxes and the Ampere force from dynamos were employed as the power take-off (PTO) damping source. During the experiments, variations in numbers of key parameters, including the wave elevation, free response or damped motion of the floating pontoons, and the voltage output of the dynamos were simultaneously measured. Results indicate that the wave overtopping and breaking occurring on the upper surfaces of floating pontoons have a signific... [more]

Keywords: Austria, beneficial composition of energy communities, clean energy package, economic viability, national transposition of guidelines for renewable energy communities, renewable energy communities, renewable energy directive, shared photovoltaics
This study is concerned with the national transposition of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Austrian law. The objective is to estimate the economic viability for residential customers when participating in a renewable energy community (REC), focused on PV electricity sharing. The developed simulation model considers the omission of certain electricity levies as well as the obligatory proximity constraint being linked to grid levels, thus introducing a stepwise reduction of per-unit grid charges as an incentive to keep the inner-community electricity transfer as local as possible. Results show that cost savings in residential RECs cover a broad range from 9 EUR/yr to 172 EUR/yr. The lowest savings are gained by customers without in-house PV systems, while owners of a private PV system make the most profits due to the possibility of selling as well as buying electricity within the borders of the REC. Magnetic Coupling for a 10 kW Tidal Current Turbine: Design and Small Scale Experiments
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: counter-rotating turbine, cylindrical air gap magnetic coupling, marine current turbine, tidal current energy
This paper presents a coupling design that improves water tightness of a marine current turbine (MCT). The coupling is numerically analyzed and incorporated into the design of an MCT from a previous study. The performance of the MCT with the magnetic coupling is compared to the previous results in small scale turbine experiments. The results show that the new design is water tight and has lower mechanical losses when compared with previous results. The new turbine has increased maximum power output (from 116 W to 122 W) and hydrodynamic coefficient of power (Previously 0.45 to 0.46). Using these results, the coupling design is scaled for a 10 kW MCT and further analyzed by finite element analysis. The results obtained show that the magnetic coupling is capable of withstanding the combined weight of the hub and blade assembly. The results in this study will be used for developing a prototype for deployment in real seas.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: average method, building envelope’s in-use energy performance, heat loss coefficient
The existing performance gap between the design and the real energy consumption of a building could have three main origins: the occupants’ behaviour, the performance of the energy systems and the performance of the building envelope. Through the estimation of the in-use Heat Loss Coefficient (HLC), it is possible to characterise the building’s envelope energy performance under occupied conditions. In this research, the estimation of the HLC of two individual residential buildings located in Gainsborough and Loughborough (UK) was carried out using an average method. This average method was developed and successfully tested in previous research for an occupied four-story office building with very different characteristics to individual residential buildings.
