Accurate Online Battery Impedance Measurement Method with Low Output Voltage Ripples on Power Converters
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery impedance measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, lithium-ion battery, online measurement
The conventional online battery impedance measurement method works by perturbing the duty cycle of the DC-DC power converter and measuring the response of the battery voltage and current. This periodical duty cycle perturbation will continuously generate large voltage ripples at the output of power converters. These large ripples will not easily be removed due to the high amplitude and wide frequency range and would be a challenge to meet tight output regulation. To solve this problem, this paper presents a new online battery impedance measurement technique by inserting a small switched resistor circuit (SRC) into the converter. The first contribution of this work is that the perturbation source is moved from the main switch to the input-side of the converter, so the ripples are reduced. The analysis and experimental results of the proposed method show a reduction of 16-times compared with the conventional method. The second contribution tackles the possible change of the battery state... [more]

Clarifications on the Behavior of Alternative Gases to SF6 in Divergent Electric Field Distributions under AC Voltage
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: C4F7N, C4F7N/CO2, C5F10O, C5F10O/O2/CO2, divergent electric fields, gaseous breakdown, N2, O2/CO2, partial discharge inception voltage/electric field, polarity reversal pressure/electric field
Negative and positive partial discharge inception voltages and breakdown measurements are reported in a needle-plane electrode system as a function of pressure under AC voltage for natural gases (N2, CO2, and O2/CO2), pure NovecTM gases (C4F7N and C5F10O) and NovecTM in different natural gas admixtures. For compressed 4% C4F7N−96% CO2 and 6% C5F10O−12% O2−82% CO2 gas mixtures, the positive-streamer mode is identified as the breakdown mechanism. Breakdown and negative partial discharge inception voltages of 6% C5F10O−12% O2−82% CO2 are higher than those of 4% C4F7N−96% CO2. At 8.8 bar abs, the breakdown voltage of 6% C5F10O−12% O2−82% CO2 is equal to that of 12.77% O2−87.23% CO2 (buffer gas). Synergism in negative partial discharge inception voltage/electric field fits with the mean value and the sum of each partial pressure individually component for a 20% C4F7N−80% CO2 and 6% C5F10O−12% O2−82% CO2, respectively. In 9% C4F7N−91% CO2, the comparison of partial discharge inception electr... [more]

Comparison between Concentrated Solar Power and Gas-Based Generation in Terms of Economic and Flexibility-Related Aspects in Chile
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ancillary services, Concentrated Solar Power, natural gas industry, power industry, renewable energy sources, solar energy
The energy sector in Chile demands a significant increase in renewable energy sources in the near future, and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies are becoming increasingly competitive as compared to natural gas plants. Motivated by this, this paper presents a comparison between solar technologies such as hybrid plants and natural gas-based thermal technologies, as both technologies share several characteristics that are comparable and beneficial for the power grid. This comparison is made from an economic point of view using the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) metric and in terms of the systemic benefits related to flexibility, which is very much required due to the current decarbonization scenario of Chile’s energy matrix. The results show that the LCOE of the four hybrid plant models studied is lower than the LCOE of the gas plant. A solar hybrid plant configuration composed of a photovoltaic and solar tower plant (STP) with 13 h of storage and without generation restrictions... [more]

Investigation into Sizing Photovoltaic with Energy Storage for Off-Grid Transactive Scenarios
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Energy Storage, microgrids, photovoltaic, power reliability, transactive energy
In this study, a novel sizing methodology was developed for centralized and interconnected operating strategies of transactive microgrids and several variables were investigated including starting month, initial charge of battery, load variability, unit cost of solar panels and energy storage, number of systems, climate, and required reliability to determine their effect on total cost. The centralized strategy improved cost by seven to ten percent compared to the isolated strategy in every case. The interconnected strategy saved an incremental amount of money consistently compared to the isolated standard. The number of connected systems was not a strong effect. It was thought that increasing the number of systems would increase the benefit of energy sharing. Climate zones studied (“Cold”; “Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry”; “Mixed Humid”; and “Cold but with lower solar irradiation”) showed a large variation on cost with the Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry being the least expensive and Cold, with lower solar irrad... Influence of Molecule Structure on Lightning Impulse Breakdown of Ester Liquids
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: breakdown, ester liquids, lightning impulse, natural ester, streamer
Ester liquids are environmentally friendly insulating oils, and they can be used as an alternative to mineral oil in transformers, even though in most countries spills of ester oils must be treated like spills of mineral oil. Furthermore, the breakdown characteristics of ester liquids are worse than those of mineral oils in heterogeneous electric fields. In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental research on both positive and negative lightning impulse breakdown properties in point-plane geometries with gaps varying from 1 mm to 50 mm. The breakdown voltages and streamer velocities of five kinds of ester liquids, including natural ester, synthetic ester, and three kinds of single component esters have been measured. The results show that the double bonds have no effect on the breakdown voltage of ester liquids. The average streamer velocities of mono-esters are faster than that of other esters under positive polarity, and the breakdown voltages of all esters are close.

Home Energy Management for Community Microgrids Using Optimal Power Sharing Algorithm
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), home energy management (HEM), microgrids, optimal power sharing algorithm (OPSA), renewable energy sources (RESs)
From a residential point of view, home energy management (HEM) is an essential requirement in order to diminish peak demand and utility tariffs. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) together with battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and central battery storage system (CBSS) may promote energy and cost minimization. However, proper home appliance scheduling along with energy storage options is essential to significantly decrease the energy consumption profile and overall expenditure in real-time operation. This paper proposes a cost-effective HEM scheme in the microgrid framework to promote curtailing of energy usage and relevant utility tariff considering both energy storage and renewable sources integration. Usually, the household appliances have different runtime preferences and duration of operation based on user demand. This work considers a simulator designed in the C++ platform to address the domestic customer’s HEM issue based on usages priorities. The positive a... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cube root, floating point, Householder, inverse cube root, Newton–Raphson
We develop a bit manipulation technique for single precision floating point numbers which leads to new algorithms for fast computation of the cube root and inverse cube root. It uses the modified iterative Newton−Raphson method (the first order of convergence) and Householder method (the second order of convergence) to increase the accuracy of the results. The proposed algorithms demonstrate high efficiency and reduce error several times in the first iteration in comparison with known algorithms. After two iterations 22.84 correct bits were obtained for single precision. Experimental tests showed that our novel algorithm is faster and more accurate than library functions for microcontrollers.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: battery model, extended Kalman filter, parameter identification, state-of-charge
With the development of new energy vehicle technology, battery management systems used to monitor the state of the battery have been widely researched. The accuracy of the battery status assessment to a great extent depends on the accuracy of the battery model parameters. This paper proposes an improved method for parameter identification and state-of-charge (SOC) estimation for lithium-ion batteries. Using a two-order equivalent circuit model, the battery model is divided into two parts based on fast dynamics and slow dynamics. The recursive least squares method is used to identify parameters of the battery, and then the SOC and the open-circuit voltage of the model is estimated with the extended Kalman filter. The two-module voltages are calculated using estimated open circuit voltage and initial parameters, and model parameters are constantly updated during iteration. The proposed method can be used to estimate the parameters and the SOC in real time, which does not need to know the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extreme, offshore, waves, Wind, wind energy, wind turbines
The Outer Continental Shelf along the U.S. east coast exhibits abundant wind resources and is now a geographic focus for offshore wind deployments. This analysis derives and presents expected extreme wind and wave conditions for the sixteen lease areas that are currently being developed. Using the homogeneous ERA5 reanalysis dataset it is shown that the fifty-year return period wind speed (U50) at 100 m a.s.l. in the lease areas ranges from 29.2 to 39.7 ms−1. After applying corrections to account for spectral smoothing and averaging period, the associated pseudo-point U50 estimates are 34 to 46 ms−1. The derived uncertainty in U50 estimates due to different distributional fitting is smaller than the uncertainty associated with under-sampling of the interannual variability in annual maximum wind speeds. It is shown that, in the northern lease areas, annual maximum wind speeds are generally associated with intense extratropical cyclones rather than cyclones of tropical origin. Extreme wa... [more]

Central and Eastern European CO2 Market—Challenges of Emissions Trading for Energy Companies
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, emissions trading, energy companies from Central and Eastern Europe, EU ETS
The aim of this article was to identify challenges of emissions trading that the Polish and CEE Central and Eastern Europe energy industry will face, as well as to indicate key implications for the competitiveness of the companies from the energy sector resulting from that trading. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is the emissions trading system, which results from the EU policy concerning climate change. It is a tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The system regulates an annual allocation of the allowances. The price of CO2 emission allowances is subject to constant fluctuations because it depends on various macroeconomic factors as well as is an effect of proprietary trading by global investment banks. Polish energy companies have an increasing share in the emission of CO2 in the European market. This is due to the fact that other European countries are rapidly moving away from fossil fuel-fired sources. The cost per MWh related to CO2 price has been growing in the... [more]

Ensemble Machine Learning Assisted Reservoir Characterization Using Field Production Data−An Offshore Field Case Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Machine Learning, offshore oilfield, random forest, reservoir characterization, saturation prediction
Estimation of fluid saturation is an important step in dynamic reservoir characterization. Machine learning techniques have been increasingly used in recent years for reservoir saturation prediction workflows. However, most of these studies require input parameters derived from cores, petrophysical logs, or seismic data, which may not always be readily available. Additionally, very few studies incorporate the production data, which is an important reflection of the dynamic reservoir properties and also typically the most frequently and reliably measured quantity throughout the life of a field. In this research, the random forest ensemble machine learning algorithm is implemented that uses the field-wide production and injection data (both measured at the surface) as the only input parameters to predict the time-lapse oil saturation profiles at well locations. The algorithm is optimized using feature selection based on feature importance score and Pearson correlation coefficient, in com... [more]
