Municipalities’ Policy on Innovation and Market Introduction in Sustainable Energy: A Focus on Local Young Technology Firms
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy transition, market introduction, municipalities’ planning, young technology firms
Municipalities are increasingly involved in energy transition planning. There are, however, doubts about whether municipalities are an adequate organization and scale level for this. In this context, the article aims to picture developments of local young technology firms in bringing energy inventions to market, in particular, how municipalities have provided support to them. Such aim, in the context of energy transition, is new. Derived from study in Nordic countries and The Netherlands, two findings make a valuable contribution to literature. Firstly, a share of almost 40% of young technology firms fails in market introduction, and if reached the market, a 30% is rather late. Barriers stem from high risk-taking, late (no) collaboration, and limiting circumstances in metropolitan cities. Secondly, municipalities’ initiatives appear useful in filling young technology firms’ needs, but the initiatives are fragmented and miss priority. However, partnering in professional start-up organiz... [more]

Evaluation of Medium Voltage Network for Propagation of Supraharmonics Resonance
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric power distribution, power quality, power-system harmonics, power-system modelling, supraharmonics
Power converters with high switching frequency used to integrate renewable power sources to medium and low voltage networks are sources of emission in the supraharmonic range (2 to 150 kHz). When such converters are connected to a medium voltage (MV) network these supraharmonics propagate through the MV network and can impact network and customer equipment over a wide range. This paper evaluates an existing Swedish MV electrical network and studies the pattern of supraharmonic resonance and the propagation of supraharmonics. The MV network consists of eight feeders including a small wind farm. Simulations reveal that, the bigger the MV network, the more resonant frequencies, but also the lower the amplitude of the resonance peaks in the driving point impedance. It was also identified that for short feeders as length increases, the magnitude of the transfer impedance at supraharmonic frequency decreases. For further increment in feeder length, the magnitude increases or becomes almost c... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand-side management, discrete choice theory, electric vehicle charging, genetic algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimization, revenue management, vehicle-to-grid
The recent revolution in electric mobility is both crucial and promising in the coordinated effort to reduce global emissions and tackle climate change. However, mass electrification brings up new technical problems that need to be solved. The increasing penetration rates of electric vehicles will add an unprecedented energy load to existing power grids. The stability and the quality of power systems, especially on a local distribution level, will be compromised by multiple vehicles that are simultaneously connected to the grid. In this paper, the authors propose a choice-based pricing algorithm to indirectly control the charging and V2G activities of electric vehicles in non-residential facilities. Two metaheuristic approaches were applied to solve the optimization problem, and a comparative analysis was performed to evaluate their performance. The proposed algorithm would result in a significant revenue increase for the parking operator, and at the same time, it could alleviate the o... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BAT algorithm, boost inverter, photovoltaic, SHGqBI, total harmonic distortions
Owing to the intermittent nature of renewable energy systems, an improved power extraction technique and modernized power modulators are to be designed to overcome power quality challenges. Attesting to this fact, this work aims to enhance the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) system using the BAT algorithm (BA) and enhances the overall performance of the system using modified inverter topology. Specifically, a new power electronic modulator, i.e., a simplified high gain quasi-boost inverter (SHGqBI), is implemented to eliminate the downsides of the conventional system. The proposed inverter reduces the additional components that can condense the volume of the design with reduced conduction and switching losses. The combination of BA-based PV rated 250 W and novel inverter configuration pick the global peak power with enhanced power quality. Notably, BA extracts the maximum power from the panel meritoriously with about 98.8% efficiency. This is because BA uses the global input parame... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid renewable energy systems, multi-energy buildings, optimal design, optimal management and control, Optimization, renewable energy sources, renewable energy technologies
Buildings are responsible for over 30% of global final energy consumption and nearly 40% of total CO2 emissions. Thus, rapid penetration of renewable energy technologies (RETs) in this sector is required. Integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into residential buildings should not only guarantee an overall neutral energy balance over long term horizon (nZEB concept), but also provide a higher flexibility, a real-time monitoring and a real time interaction with end-users (smart-building concept). Thus, increasing interest is being given to the concepts of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES) and Multi-Energy Buildings, in which several renewable and nonrenewable energy systems, the energy networks and the energy demand optimally interact with each other at various levels, exploring all possible interactions between systems and vectors (electricity, heat, cooling, fuels, transport) without them being treated separately. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: efficiency coefficient method, envelope entropy, feature extraction, rolling element bearings, shuffled frog leaping algorithm, variational mode decomposition
The fault diagnosis of rolling element bearing is of great significance to avoid serious accidents and huge economic losses. However, the characteristics of the nonlinear, non-stationary vibration signals make the fault feature extraction of signal become a challenging work. This paper proposes an improved variational mode decomposition (IVMD) algorithm for the fault feature extraction of rolling bearing, which has the advantages of extracting the optimal fault feature from the decomposed mode and overcoming the noise interference. The Shuffled Frog Leap Algorithm (SFLA) is employed in the optimal adaptive selection of mode number K and bandwidth control parameter α. A multi-objective evaluation function, which is based on the envelope entropy, kurtosis and correlation coefficients, is constructed to select the optimal mode component. The efficiency coefficient method (ECM) is utilized to transform the multi-objective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem. T... [more]

Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Supercritical N-Decane in Adjacent Cooling Channels with Opposite Flow Directions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow and heat transfer, gravity, heat flux, n-decane, opposite flow directions
To ensure the safety of a scramjet, an arrangement scheme of adjacent regenerative cooling channels with opposite flow directions is adopted to decrease the maximum wall temperature. Based on extended corresponding-state methods, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of supercritical n-decane in cooling channels with same and opposite flow directions under a pressure of 3 MPa are comprehensively investigated in this paper. Compared to adjacent cooling channels with same flow direction, the local maximum wall temperature in adjacent cooling channels with opposite directions is notably reduced. Moreover, the effects of the heat flux and gravity on the development of flow field are analysed. A pair of recirculation zones is found close to the bottom wall of the cooling channels along the flow direction, the scale of which greatly expands with increasing heat flux. Once the heat flux density reaches a critical value, a phenomenon of flow asymmetry occurs. In addition, the small recirc... [more]
