Fuel Cells Based on Natural Polysaccharides for Rail Vehicle Application
Paweł Daszkiewicz, Beata Kurc, Marita Pigłowska, Maciej Andrzejewski
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exhaust emission, Fuel Cells, hybrid vehicles, Hydrogen
This manuscript shows the use of natural polysaccharides such as starch and cellulose as a carbon source for fuel cells. To achieve this, two innovative methods of obtaining hydrogen have been shown: by adsorption and by enzyme. The carbonization path of the material results in excellent sorption properties and allows gas with high efficiency to be obtained. The enzymatic method for the degradation of the compound is more expensive because specific enzymes (such as laccase, tyrosinase) must be used, but it allows greater control of the properties of the obtained material. A scientific novelty is the use of natural raw materials, the use of which increases the biodegradability of the electrochemical system and also reduces the cost of raw materials and increases the range of their acquisition. Energy should be generated where it is used. Another goal is decentralization, and thanks to the proposed solutions, hydrogen cells represent an innovative alternative to today’s energy giants—als... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, operating hardware, thermal bridge, U-value, window
Despite significant advancements in fenestration technology in the last two decades, the thermal transmittance of fenestration products is still significantly higher than that of walls. This corresponds to 60% of the total energy loss of a modern building envelope through the windows. Hence, further development and improvements of fenestration products are necessary. Increasingly stringent codes and standards for fenestration stimulate industry to work on improved solutions. Thus, it is crucial that assessment techniques are able to account for innovations accurately. The thermal effects of non-continuous hardware in window frames are currently ignored by international rating procedures. A preliminary investigation conducted by our team showed significant performance degradation in two of the three out-opening casement profiles caused by the presence of operating hardware. Frames with the structure made of vinyl and fiberglass consist of many air cavities that are penetrated by operati... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption chiller, economic analysis, energy analysis, solar concentrating system, solar heating and cooling, TRNSYS software
Energy needs of air conditioning systems are constantly growing worldwide, due to climate change and growing standards of buildings. Among the possible systems, solar heating and cooling based on reversible heat pumps and thermally driven chillers are a viable option for ensuring space heating and cooling for different users. The high installation costs are a limit to their diffusion, however, under specific circumstances (climate, type of the building, type of the user, etc.), the investment in this technology can be profitable in a long term. The presented paper describes an energy-economic assessment of a solar heating and cooling system integrating a solar dish concentrator with thermal collectors coupled with a reversible heat pump and an absorption or adsorption chiller. The system integrated with a household building is developed and dynamically simulated in the Transient System Simulation (TRNSYS) environment under different circumstances −adoption of absorption or adsorption c... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: basic probability assignment, belief entropy, conflict management, Dempster-Shafer evidence theory, entropy distance, pignistic probability transformation entropy, target recognition, uncertainty measurement
Conflicting evidence affects the final target recognition results. Thus, managing conflicting evidence efficiently can help to improve the belief degree of the true target. In current research, the existing approaches based on belief entropy use belief entropy itself to measure evidence conflict. However, it is not convincing to characterize the evidence conflict only through belief entropy itself. To solve this problem, we comprehensively consider the influences of the belief entropy itself and mutual belief entropy on conflict measurement, and propose a novel approach based on an improved belief entropy and entropy distance. The improved belief entropy based on pignistic probability transformation function is named pignistic probability transformation (PPT) entropy that measures the conflict between evidences from the perspective of self-belief entropy. Compared with the state-of-the-art belief entropy, it can measure the uncertainty of evidence more accurately, and make full use of... [more]

Marcin Kaczmarzyk, Michał Musiał
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Energy Storage, extraterrestrial building physics, lunar base, nuclear reactor, photovoltaics, power system
Due to the extreme cost of cargo transportation from Earth to the lunar surface, future lunar base subsystems are required to be rigorously optimized in terms of mass reduction. The purpose of this paper was to identify and evaluate the influence of key parameters of proposed lunar base power systems, as well as of the lunar environment on the total power system mass. Nine different power systems were studied as combinations of two power sources and three energy storage technologies. Power system architecture, total power demand of the base, its power management strategy, solar array structure type, Selenographic latitude and solar illumination conditions were nominated as the primary parameters for this study. Total power system mass calculations were performed for more than 200 combinations of these parameters, including three separate case studies. The total mass calculated for each combination included a power source, an energy storage unit, temperature control and the balance of s... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive fuzzy PID (AFPID), granular function fuzzy PID (GFPID), oxygen excess ratio, oxygen starvation, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC)
An effective oxygen excess ratio control strategy for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) can avoid oxygen starvation and optimize system performance. In this paper, a fuzzy PID control strategy based on granular function (GFPID) was proposed. Meanwhile, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell dynamic model was established on the MATLAB/Simulink platform, including the stack model system and the auxiliary system. In order to avoid oxygen starvation due to the transient variation of load current and optimize the parasitic power of the auxiliary system and the stack voltage, the purpose of optimizing the overall operating condition of the system was finally achieved. Adaptive fuzzy PID (AFPID) control has the technical bottleneck limitation of fuzzy rules explosion. GFPID eliminates fuzzification and defuzzification to solve this phenomenon. The number of fuzzy rules does not affect the precision of GFPID control, which is only related to the fuzzy granular points in the fitted gra... [more]
A Multi-Channel Fast Impedance Spectroscopy Instrument Developed for Quality Assurance of Super-Capacitors

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: digital lock-in amplifier, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, equivalent circuit analysis, multi sine super imposed method, multi-channel, super-capacitors
Conventional experimental methods for testing the performance of super-capacitors include the measurement of capacitance through charge and discharge, measurement of equivalent series resistance (ESR) and measurement of self-discharge and the equivalent circuit model (ECM) by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). However, the methods are not suitable for the mass production line of supercapacitors since they require a long time for the test and several kinds of different instrument. EIS is an attractive method to evaluate the performance of supercapacitors except that it takes a long time for a single test. In this paper a fast EIS instrument suitable for quality assurance for the mass production of supercapacitors is proposed. In order to reduce the time for the test, a multi-sine sweeping method is used for the EIS test and the results are analyzed by extracting the parameters of the ECM to evaluate the performance of the supercapacitors. The proposed instrument is developed... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, higher education, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, serious games, Simulation
The prevailing need for a more sustainable management of natural resources depends not only on the decisions made by governments and the will of the population, but also on the knowledge of the role of energy in our society and the relevance of preserving natural resources. In this sense, critical work is being done to instill key concepts—such as the circular economy and sustainable energy—in higher education institutions. In this way, it is expected that future professionals and managers will be aware of the importance of energy optimization, and will learn a series of computational methods that can support the decision-making process. In the context of higher education, this paper reviews the main trends and challenges related to the concepts of circular economy and sustainable energy. Besides, we analyze the role of simulation and serious games as a learning tool for the aforementioned concepts. Finally, the paper provides insights and discusses open research opportunities regardin... [more]
Cyber Attacks in Transactive Energy Market-Based Microgrid Systems

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyber attacks, flexibility scheme, impact analysis, microgrid system, peer to peer energy trading, transactive energy market
Due to the increasing integration of distributed energy generation in the electric grid, transactive energy markets (TEMs) have recently emerged to balance the demand and supply dynamically across the grid. TEM enables peer to peer (P2P) energy trading and brings flexibility by reducing users’ demand in the grid. It also enhances the system’s efficiency and reduces the pressure on electricity networks. However, it is vulnerable to major cyber attacks as users equipped with smart devices are participating autonomously in the energy market, and an extensive amount of information is exchanged through the communication channel. The potential attacks and impacts of those attacks need to be investigated to develop an attack resilient TEM-based power system. Hence, in this paper, our goal is to systematically identify possible cyber attacks associated with a TEM-based power system. In order to achieve this goal, we classify the attacks during the P2P and flexibility schemes of TEM into three... [more]
Dynamic Rating Management of Overhead Transmission Lines Operating under Multiple Weather Conditions
Raquel Martinez, Mario Manana, Alberto Arroyo, Sergio Bustamante, Alberto Laso, Pablo Castro, Rafael Minguez
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ampacity, conductor temperature, overhead transmission lines, real-time monitoring, weather parameters
Integration of a large number of renewable systems produces line congestions, resulting in a problem for distribution companies, since the lines are not capable of transporting all the energy that is generated. Both environmental and economic constraints do not allow the building new lines to manage the energy from renewable sources, so the efforts have to focus on the existing facilities. Dynamic Rating Management (DRM) of power lines is one of the best options to achieve an increase in the capacity of the lines. The practical application of DRM, based on standards IEEE (Std.738, 2012) and CIGRE TB601 (Technical Brochure 601, 2014) , allows to find several deficiencies related to errors in estimations. These errors encourage the design of a procedure to obtain high accuracy ampacity values. In the case of this paper, two methodologies have been tested to reduce estimation errors. Both methodologies use the variation of the weather inputs. It is demonstrated that a reduction of the con... [more]
Numerical Study of Spray-Induced Turbulence Using Industrial Fire-Mitigation Nozzles
Guodong Gai, Abdellah Hadjadj, Sergey Kudriakov, Stephane Mimouni, Olivier Thomine
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: polydisperse spray, spray nozzle, spray-induced turbulence, turbulence intensity
A numerical investigation of the spray-induced turbulence generated from industrial spray nozzles is carried out to better understand the roles of the nozzle spray on the fires or explosions in different accidental scenarios. Numerical simulations are first validated against experimental data in the single nozzle case using the monodisperse and polydisperse assumption for droplet diameters. The polydispersion of the nozzle spray is proven to be necessary to correctly predict the gas and droplet velocities. The turbulent kinetic energy has dominant values inside the spray cone, decreases rapidly with the vertical distance from the spray nozzle, and is strongly affected by the spray droplet diameter. On the contrary, the integral length scale is found to have high values outside the spray cone. Two interacting sprays injected from different nozzles are then investigated numerically using the validated polydisperse model. The water sprays generated from such industrial nozzles can generat... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation, floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), M), mooring and anchoring, operation and maintenance (O&amp, Petri network (PN), reliability, spar buoy platform
With increasing deployment of offshore wind farms further from shore and in deeper waters, the efficient and effective planning of operation and maintenance (O&M) activities has received considerable attention from wind energy developers and operators in recent years. The O&M planning of offshore wind farms is a complicated task, as it depends on many factors such as asset degradation rates, availability of resources required to perform maintenance tasks (e.g., transport vessels, service crew, spare parts, and special tools) as well as the uncertainties associated with weather and climate variability. A brief review of the literature shows that a lot of research has been conducted on optimizing the O&M schedules for fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines; however, the literature for O&M planning of floating wind farms is too limited. This paper presents a stochastic Petri network (SPN) model for O&M planning of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) and their support structure components... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: combined radiant and convective systems, energy simulations, mixing ventilation, office, parametric study, personalized ventilation, radiant cooling
The energy consumption of purely convective (i.e., various air volume (VAV) mixing ventilation) and combined radiant and convective HVAC systems (chilled ceiling combined with mixing ventilation—CCMV or personalized ventilation—CCPV) was investigated with multi-variant simulations carried out the IDA Indoor Climate and Energy software. We analyzed three different climates: temperate, hot and humid, and hot and dry. Our results show that the use of CCPV substantially reduced energy consumption compared to the conventional VAV system in hot climates. We also show that increasing the room temperature to 28 °C is an effective energy-saving strategy that can reduce consumption by as much as 40%. In the temperate climate, the VAV system was preferable because it used less energy as it benefited from outdoor air free-cooling. The control strategy of the supply temperature of personalized air had an impact on the energy demand of the HVAC system. The most efficient control strategy of the CCPV... [more]
Simulation-Based Optimization of Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery with a Model Integrating Temperature, Pressure, and Salinity Effects

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), microbial kinetics, Optimization, pressure, salinity, selective plugging, temperature
The microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) method is an eco-friendly and economical alternative technology. The technology involves a variety of uncertainties, and its success depends on controlling microbial growth and metabolism. Though a few numerical studies have been carried out to reduce the uncertainties, no attempt has been made to consider temperature, pressure, and salinity in an integrated manner. In this study, a new modeling method incorporating these environmental impacts was proposed, and MEOR analysis was performed. As a result, accurate modeling was possible to prevent overestimating the performance of MEOR. In addition, oil recovery was maximized through sensitivity analysis and optimization based on an integrative model. Finally, applying MEOR to an actual reservoir model showed a 7% increase in oil recovery compared to waterflooding. This result proved the practical applicability of the method.
Procedure for Detection of Stator Inter-Turn Short Circuit in AC Machines Measuring the External Magnetic Field

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC machines, magnetic field, non-invasive fault diagnosis, spectral analysis
This paper presents a non-invasive procedure to detect inter-turn short circuit faults in the stator windings of AC electrical machines. It proposes the use of the stray external magnetic field measured in the vicinity of the machine to determine stator faults. The originality introduced by this procedure is the analysis method presented in the paper, which when compared to usual diagnosis methods, does not require any data on the healthy state of the machine. The procedure uses the magnetic unbalance created by the rotor poles and the load variation in faulty cases. The presented method can be applied to induction and synchronous machines used as a motor or generator. It is based on the variation of sensitive spectral lines obtained from the external magnetic field when the load changes. Analytical relationships are developed in the paper to justify the proposed method and to explain the physical phenomenon. To illustrate these theoretical considerations, practical experiments are als... [more]
Numerical Investigation of the Geometrical Effect on Flow-Induced Vibration Performance of Pivoted Bodies

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cross section, FIV, geometry, pivoted cylinder, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, VIV
In this study, the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) of pivoted cylinders (at a distance) is numerically investigated as a potential source of energy harvesting. In particular, we investigate the effect of pivot point placement, arm length, and natural frequency on the FIV performance of six different cross sections in the Reynolds number of around 1000. All sections have similar mass, area, and moment of inertia to eliminate non-geometrical effects on the performance. Classical studies show that the synchronization phenomenon (lock-in) occurs when the vortex formation frequency is close enough to the body’s natural frequency. Due to the configuration of the cylinder in this research (pivoted eccentrically), the natural frequency is also a function of the flow velocity as well as the geometrical specifications of the system. The simulation is done for the arm lengths between −3D and +3D for all cross sections. Results show that maximum output power is principally influenced more by the pivo... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion simulation, slot, surface-discharge spark plug, Wankel engine
A numerical methodology for three-dimensional fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics simulation of the combustion and gas-exchange processes in the Wankel engine was developed and validated. Two approaches of performance enhancement were studied—the addition of a slot in the rear side of the rotor recess, and installation of a third plug in the trailing side of the working chamber, in addition to the two available plugs mounted in the leading side of the baseline engine. The obtained results showed that the suggested three-plug arrangement significantly improves the engine performance. Furthermore, positioning the trailing plug further from the passage between the trailing and leading sides is of preference for higher mean in-chamber pressures. Nevertheless, for maximum performance, the distance should be brought to an optimum as during the intake stroke there is a loss of inducted charge due to backflow from the trailing plug hole. For the three-plug arrangement the presence of a slot i... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: business mode, comprehensive benefits, fuzzy-analytic network process, large-scale storage projects
With the increasing demand for clean and low-carbon energy, high proportion of renewable energy has been integrated into the receiving-end grid. The grid-side energy storage project can ensure the safe and stable operation of the grid, but it still faces many problems, such as high initial investment, difficult operation and maintenance, unclear profit model, lack of business mode. Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate the comprehensive benefit of energy storage projects in order to guide the sustainable development of large-scale energy storage projects and power system. By studying the technical and economic characteristics of energy storage, this paper establishes a comprehensive evaluation system from four dimensions of energy efficiency, economic, social, and environmental benefit. Combined with typical business modes and determining the subdivision index system of different modes, the comprehensive benefit evaluation model of grid-side commercial storage project base... [more]
Using Energy Storage Inverters of Prosumer Installations for Voltage Control in Low-Voltage Distribution Networks
Rozmysław Mieński, Przemysław Urbanek, Irena Wasiak
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, energy management, Energy Storage, prosumer installation, voltage regulation in a low-voltage network
The paper includes the analysis of the operation of low-voltage prosumer installation consisting of receivers and electricity sources and equipped with a 3-phase energy storage system. The aim of the storage application is the management of active power within the installation to decrease the total power exchanged with the supplying network and thus reduce energy costs borne by the prosumer. A solution for the effective implementation of the storage system is presented. Apart from the active power management performed according to the prosumer’s needs, the storage inverter provides the ancillary service of voltage regulation in the network according to the requirements of the network operator. A control strategy involving algorithms for voltage regulation without prejudice to the prosumer’s interest is described in the paper. Reactive power is used first as a control signal and if the required voltage effect cannot be reached, then the active power in the controlled phase is additional... [more]

Keywords: analytical pyrolysis, biorefinery, enzymatic hydrolysis, glucan-enriched solids, lignin-derived products, rock-rose
Residues of Cistus ladanifer obtained after commercial steam distillation for essential oil production were evaluated to produce cellulose enriched solids and added-value lignin-derived compounds. The delignification of extracted (CLRext) and extracted and hydrothermally pretreated biomass (CLRtreat) was studied using two organosolv processes, ethanol/water mixtures (EO), and alkali-catalyzed glycerol (AGO), and by an alkali (sodium hydroxide) process (ASP) under different reaction conditions. The phenolic composition of soluble lignin was determined by capillary zone electrophoresis and by Py-GC/MS, which was also used to establish the monomeric composition of both the delignified solids and isolated lignin. The enzymatic saccharification of the delignified solids was also evaluated. The ASP (4% NaOH, 2 h) lead to both the highest delignification and enzymatic saccharification (87% and 79%, respectively). A delignification of 76% and enzymatic hydrolysis yields of 72% were obtained fo... [more]

Keywords: antibiotic resistance genes, biogas production, Illumina MiSeq Sequencing, mesophilic anaerobic digestion, microbiome biodiversity
This study explored the effect of eight antimicrobials on the efficiency of biogas production in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process of cattle manure. The microbiome involved in AD, presence and number of genes mcrA, MSC and MST specific for Archaea, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) concentration in digestate (D) were examined. Supplementation of antibiotics to substrate significantly lowered biogas production. Amoxicillin caused a 75% decrease in CH4 production in comparison with the control samples. Enrofloxacin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline reduced the amount of biogas produced by 36, 39, 45 and 53%, respectively. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA results revealed that bacteria dominated the Archaea microorganisms in all samples. Moreover, antibiotics led to a decrease in the abundance of the genes mcrA, MSC, MST, and induced an increase in the number of tetracyclines resistance genes. Antibiotics decreased the efficiency of the AD process and low... [more]

Keywords: 3D fracture networks, fractal theory, hydraulic fracturing, shale oil, topology
The formation of complex fracture networks through the fracturing technology is a crucial operation used to improve the production capacity of tight gas/oil. In this study, physical simulation experiments of hydraulic fracturing were conducted with a true triaxial test system on cubic shale oil samples from the Yanchang Formation, China. The fractures were scanned by CT both before and after the experiments and then reconstructed in 3D. The complexity of fracture networks was investigated quantitatively by the fractal theory with topology. Finally, the effect of the horizontal stress ratio, fluid viscosity, and natural fractures on the complexity of the fracture networks was discussed. The results indicate that the method based on fractal theory and topology can effectively characterize the complexity of the fracture network. The change rates of the fractal dimension (K) are 0.45−3.64%, and the fractal dimensions (DNH) of the 3D fracture network after fracturing are 1.9522−2.1837, the... [more]
Re-Designing GB’s Electricity Market Design: A Conceptual Framework Which Recognises the Value of Distributed Energy Resources

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, decentralised electricity system, distributed locational marginal price, distribution gap, smart energy system
The design of electricity markets determines the technologies, services and modes of operation that can access value, consequently shaping current and future electricity landscapes. This paper highlights that the efficacy of Great Britain’s electricity market design in facilitating net zero is inadequate and must be reconfigured. The rules of the current electricity market design are remnants of an electricity sector dominated by large-scale, centralised, fossil fuel technologies. Therefore, routes to market for the provision of necessary services to support net zero, not least flexibility, are largely inaccessible for distributed energy resources and, despite their benefits to the system, are thus undervalued. Based upon a review and consolidation of 30 proposed electricity market designs from liberalised electricity sectors, this paper proposes a new electricity market design for Great Britain. This design is presented alongside a new institutional framework to aid in the efficient o... [more]

Keywords: durability, efficiency, kirigami, rotational energy, triboelectric nanogenerator
While sliding-mode triboelectric nanogenerators (S-TENGs) have been considered as one of the most promising devices for rotational energy harvesting, their inherently poor durability has been a serious bottleneck for applications. Herein, we report a three-dimensional kirigami TENG as a highly efficient and durable rotational energy harvesting device. The kirigami TENG consisted of cube-shaped paper, aluminum (Al) foil electrode and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer film, and converted rotational motion into multiple folding-unfolding vibrations. The rotation-folding (R-F) kirigami TENG generated an open-circuit voltage of 31 V, a short-circuit current of 0.67 μA and an instantaneous power (power density) of 1.2 μW (0.13 μW/cm2) at 200 rpm, which was sufficient to turn on 25 light-emitting diodes and a thermo-hygrometer. The triboelectric outputs of the R-F kirigami TENG were only slightly decreased even after 288,000 continuous rotations, i.e., the output remained at 86% of its i... [more]
