Machine Learning-Based Predictive Modelling of Biodiesel Production—A Comparative Perspective
Krishna Kumar Gupta, Kanak Kalita, Ranjan Kumar Ghadai, Manickam Ramachandran, Xiao-Zhi Gao
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AdaBoost regression, biodiesel, linear regression, Machine Learning, random forest regression
Owing to the ever-growing impetus towards the development of eco-friendly and low carbon footprint energy solutions, biodiesel production and usage have been the subject of tremendous research efforts. The biodiesel production process is driven by several process parameters, which must be maintained at optimum levels to ensure high productivity. Since biodiesel productivity and quality are also dependent on the various raw materials involved in transesterification, physical experiments are necessary to make any estimation regarding them. However, a brute force approach of carrying out physical experiments until the optimal process parameters have been achieved will not succeed, due to a large number of process parameters and the underlying non-linear relation between the process parameters and responses. In this regard, a machine learning-based prediction approach is used in this paper to quantify the response features of the biodiesel production process as a function of the process pa... [more]

Piotr Bielaczyc, Rafal Sala, Tomasz Meinicke
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric, electric vehicle, induction charging, regenerative braking
This paper describes a holistic development and testing approach for a battery electric vehicle (BEV) prototype based on a self-supporting body platform originating from a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. The topic was investigated in relation to the question of whether conversion of existing vehicle platforms is a viable approach in comparison to designing a new vehicle ab initio. The scope of work consisted of the development stage, followed by laboratory and on-road testing to verify the vehicle’s performance and driveability. The vehicle functionality targeted commercial daily use on urban routes. Based on the assumed technical requirements, the vehicle architecture was designed and components specified that included various sub-systems: electric motor powertrain, electronic control unit (ECU), high-voltage battery pack with battery management system (BMS), charging system, high and low voltage wiring harness and electrically driven auxiliary systems. Electric sub-... [more]
Complementarity and ‘Resource Droughts’ of Solar and Wind Energy in Poland: An ERA5-Based Analysis

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complementarity map, seasonal complementarity, solar energy, theoretical availability, wind energy
In recent years, Poland has experienced a significant increase in the installed capacity of solar and wind power plants. Renewables are gaining increasing interest not only because of Poland’s obligations to European Union policies, but also because they are becoming cheaper. Wind and solar energy are fairly-well investigated technologies in Poland and new reports are quite frequently added to the existing research works documenting their potential and the issues related to their use. In this article, we analyze the spatial and temporal behavior of solar and wind resources based on reanalysis datasets from ERA5. This reanalysis has been selected because it has appropriate spatial and temporal resolution and fits the field measurements well. The presented analysis focuses only on the availability of energy potential/resources, so characteristics intrinsic to energy conversion (like wind turbine power curve) were not considered. The analysis considered the last 40 years (1980−2019) of av... [more]
The Sustainable Energy Development Index—An Application for European Union Member States
Magdalena Ligus, Piotr Peternek
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: aggregated index, composite indicator, energy policy, European Union Member States, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The development of a complete system of indicators and a composite sustainable energy index could prove useful to evaluate both the state of the art and the progress of national energy towards sustainable development. However, in the case of energy sustainability, a knowledge gap arises due to incomplete coverage and lack of systematic focus on sustainability components. The objective of our research is to obtain Sustainable Energy Development Aggregated Index to rank the EU Member States on the path to sustainable energy. We propose a set of indicators related to sustainable development in energy policy in the EU-28, grouped in three dimensions: social, economic and environmental and apply the standardized sums method in order to obtain the dimensional and aggregated indexes. The countries on the podium are Denmark, The Netherlands and Austria. The worst-performing countries (with index values below the first quartile) are Estonia, Malta, Slovakia, Poland, Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria.... [more]
Prosumers’ Behavior under a Regulation That Encourages Strict Self-Sufficiency. The Case of Spanish Photovoltaic Micro-Generation
Pere Mir-Artigues, Pablo del Río
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: micro-generation, micro-grids, prosumers market participation, regulatory framework, self-consumption
The reduction of equipment costs encourages the diffusion of photovoltaic micro-generation, however, proper regulatory measures should be implemented to facilitate self-production dissemination and to promote the emergence of new electricity markets which integrate prosumers. The specific form of these markets will depend on the level of prosumers’ self-sufficiency and the type of grid to which they will be connected. Unfortunately, Spain has been an example of resistance to micro-generation deployment. However, some things have started to change recently, albeit only to a certain extent. This article explains the key elements of the latest regulation of photovoltaic micro-generation in Spain and, through a stylized model, describes the economic behavior of prosumers in such a regulatory framework. It is concluded that this regulation only encourages prosumer plants which are strictly focused on self-sufficiency because it discourages exports and limits capacities and this regulation d... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud-based computing, control system, demand side management, distribution network, EEBUS, flow battery, fog-based computing, heat pump, monitoring system, photovoltaic generation, virtual power plant
To integrate large-scale renewable energy into energy systems, an effective participation from private investors and active customer engagement are essential. Virtual power plants (VPPs) are a very promising approach. To realize this engagement, an efficient monitoring and control system needs to be implemented for the VPP to be flexible, scalable, secure, and cost-effective. In this paper, a realistic VPP in Western Australia is studied, comprising 67 dwellings, including a 810 kW rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system, a 700 kWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), a heat pump hot water system (HWS), an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, and demand management mechanisms. The practical and detailed concept design of the monitoring and control system for EEBUS-enabled appliances, and also for the PV and VRFB system, with smart inverters, is proposed. In addition, a practical fog-based storage and computing system is developed to enable the VPP owner to manage the PV, VRFB, and EV c... [more]
A Bimodal Multichannel Battery Pack Equalizer Based on a Quasi-Resonant Two-Transistor Forward Converter
Qixing Wu, Mingyu Gao, Huipin Lin, Zhekang Dong
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FSC equalization, LC series quasi-resonator, Two-transistor forward converter, ZVG equalization
In the application of a long series battery group, an inter-pack imbalance is inevitable. No intra-pack cell equalizer can prevent pack-level over-discharge. A bimodal, multichannel battery pack equalizer based on a quasi-resonant, two-transistor forward converter is proposed to solve this problem and achieve a tradeoff between balancing efficiency and speed. This equalizer has two modes: pack-to-pack-group and pack-to-any-pack (P2PG&AP) mode and direct-pack-to-pack (DP2P) mode. In P2PG&AP mode, this equalizer can realize the full-switching-cycle (FSC) equalization through three balancing channels, and transfer energy from any pack to both the whole group and any pack inside the group. In addition, it can effectively clamp the transformer-induced voltage using a secondary side two-transistor magnetic reset structure (STMR) and reduce the total turns of transformer coil from 70 to 50 turns via a secondary side boost converter (SBC). In DP2P mode, this equalizer can realize zero voltage... [more]

Keywords: air pollution, local fuel consumption, road segment, road traffic, traffic volume, vehicle emission, Yopougon
Road traffic emission inventories based on bottom-up methodology, are calculated for each road segment from fuel consumption and traffic volume data obtained during field measurements in Yopougon. High emissions of black carbon (BC) from vehicles are observed at major road intersections, in areas surrounding industrial zones and on highways. Highest emission values from road traffic are observed for carbon monoxide (CO) (14.8 t/d) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) (7.9 t/d), usually considered as the major traffic pollution tracers. Furthermore, peak values of CO emissions due to personal cars (PCs) are mainly linked to the old age of the vehicle fleet with high emission factors. The highest emitting type of vehicle for BC on the highway is PC (70.2%), followed by inter-communal taxis (TAs) (13.1%), heavy vehicles (HVs) (9.8%), minibuses (GBs) (6.4%) and intra-communal taxis (WRs) (0.4%). While for organic carbon (OC) emissions on the main roads, PCs represent 46.7%, followed by 20.3% for WRs,... [more]

Benjamin Küchler, Uwe Schmidt, Jonathan Hänsch
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cable grids, earth loops, earth potential rise, earth return, grounding systems, harmonics, residual current, resonant grounding, single-pole ground faults
The design of every power supply system must guarantee the safety for human life even in the event of a fault. Due to the system change in the electrical power supply, the fault current contains more and more unknown shares of current harmonics. Especially in medium voltage grids, which are operated with resonant grounding, these are determining for the level of the single-pole ground fault current for determination of permissible touch voltages and compliance with the normative requirements of the European standard EN 50522 must therefore be re-evaluated. In its first part, this concept paper presents the frequency dependent principles of earth loops formed by the grounding system. The focus here is on cabled grids and the influence of connected structures of the low voltage grid. The second part deals with the superposition of these loop currents and the resulting earth currents in case of a line to ground fault. The authors address explicitly the frequency dependence of the current... [more]

Keywords: desiccant dehumidification, evaporative cooling, greenhouse air-conditioning, Maisotsenko cycle, Pakistan
This study provides insights into the feasibility of a desiccant dehumidification-based Maisotsenko cycle evaporative cooling (M-DAC) system for greenhouse air-conditioning application. Conventional cooling techniques include direct evaporative cooling, refrigeration systems, and passive/active ventilation. which are commonly used in Pakistan; however, they are either not feasible due to their energy cost, or they cannot efficiently provide an optimum microclimate depending on the regions, the growing seasons, and the crop being cultivated. The M-DAC system was therefore proposed and evaluated as an alternative solution for air conditioning to achieve optimum levels of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) for greenhouse crop production. The objective of this study was to investigate the thermodynamic performance of the proposed system from the viewpoints of the temperature gradient, relative humidity level, VPD, and dehumidification gradient. Results showed that the standalone desiccant air-co... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentration flow cell, Energy Storage, iron chloride, redox flow cell
For renewable energies to succeed in replacing fossil fuels, large-scale and affordable solutions are needed for short and long-term energy storage. A potentially inexpensive approach of storing large amounts of energy is through the use of a concentration flow cell that is based on cheap and abundant materials. Here, we propose to use aqueous iron chloride as a reacting solvent on carbon electrodes. We suggest to use it in a red-ox concentration flow cell with two compartments separated by a hydrocarbon-based membrane. In both compartments the red-ox couple of iron II and III reacts, oxidation at the anode and reduction at the cathode. When charging, a concentration difference between the two species grows. When discharging, this concentration difference between iron II and iron III is used to drive the reaction. In this respect it is a concentration driven flow cell redox battery using iron chloride in both solutions. Here, we investigate material combinations, power, and concentrati... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: dynamic gear forces, induction machine, multibody simulation, permanent magnet synchronous machine, planetary gear, structural dynamics, system model, transient electrical machine model
In electric drivetrains, the traction machines are often coupled to a gear transmission. For the noise and vibration analysis of such systems, linearised system models in the frequency domain are commonly used. In this paper, a system approach in the time domain is introduced, which gives the advantage of analysing the transient behaviour of an electric drivetrain. The focus in this paper is on the dynamic gear model. Finally, the modelling approach is applied to an exemplary drivetrain, and the results are discussed.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engines, model-based control, nitrogen oxide emissions, torque
In the present paper, a model-based controller of engine torque and engine-out Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, which was previously developed and tested by means of offline simulations, has been validated on a FPT F1C 3.0 L diesel engine by means of rapid prototyping. With reference to the previous version, a new NOx model has been implemented to improve robustness in terms of NOx prediction. The experimental tests have confirmed the basic functionality of the controller in transient conditions, over different load ramps at fixed engine speeds, over which the average RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) values for the control of NOx emissions were of the order of 55−90 ppm, while the average RMSE values for the control of brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) were of the order of 0.25−0.39 bar. However, the test results also highlighted the need for further improvements, especially concerning the effect of the engine thermal state on the NOx emissions in transient operation. Moreover, several... [more]
Tidal Stream vs. Wind Energy: The Value of Cyclic Power When Combined with Short-Term Storage in Hybrid Systems
Daniel Coles, Athanasios Angeloudis, Zoe Goss, Jon Miles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Alderney, hybrid system, intermittency, tidal stream energy, wind energy
This study quantifies the technical, economic and environmental performance of hybrid systems that use either a tidal stream or wind turbine, alongside short-term battery storage and back-up oil generators. The systems are designed to partially displace oil generators on the island of Alderney, located in the British Channel Islands. The tidal stream turbine provides four power generation periods per day, every day. This relatively high frequency power cycling limits the use of the oil generators to 1.6 GWh/year. In contrast, low wind resource periods can last for days, forcing the wind hybrid system to rely on the back-up oil generators over long periods, totalling 2.4 GWh/year (50% higher). For this reason the tidal hybrid system spends £0.25 million/year less on fuel by displacing a greater volume of oil, or £6.4 million over a 25 year operating life, assuming a flat cost of oil over this period. The tidal and wind hybrid systems achieve an oil displacement of 78% and 67% respective... [more]
Electric Vehicles Ready for Breakthrough in MaaS? Consumer Adoption of E-Car Sharing and E-Scooter Sharing as a Part of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS)

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: choice-based conjoint, e-car sharing, e-scooter sharing, electric vehicles, latent class analysis, market simulations, mobility-as-a-Service, suburban area, sustainable mobility, willingness to pay
Current mobility trends indicate that the popularity of privately-owned cars will decrease in the near future. One reason for this development is the diffusion of mobility services such as car or bike sharing, or Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) bundles. Especially, MaaS bundles have the potential to respond to environmental issues and provide reliable mobility to users, thus illustrating the possibilities of being mobile without owning a car. Most of the past research on MaaS bundles, however, has focused on bigger cities that already have good infrastructural bases. Building on previous work in the MaaS field, we conducted a choice-based conjoint survey (n = 247) in Austria to investigate consumer preferences for MaaS packages in a suburban area. Further, we gathered data on the consumers’ willingness to pay, especially for including electric vehicles in the form of e-car sharing and e-scooter sharing in MaaS packages. The results highlight the importance of package price as the attribut... [more]
Multivariate SCADA Data Analysis Methods for Real-World Wind Turbine Power Curve Monitoring
Davide Astolfi, Francesco Castellani, Andrea Lombardi, Ludovico Terzi
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Data-Driven Models, multivariate regression, power curve, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, SCADA, wind energy, wind turbines
Due to the stochastic nature of the source, wind turbines operate under non-stationary conditions and the extracted power depends non-trivially on ambient conditions and working parameters. It is therefore difficult to establish a normal behavior model for monitoring the performance of a wind turbine and the most employed approach is to be driven by data. The power curve of a wind turbine is the relation between the wind intensity and the extracted power and is widely employed for monitoring wind turbine performance. On the grounds of the above considerations, a recent trend regarding wind turbine power curve analysis consists of the incorporation of the main working parameters (as, for example, the rotor speed or the blade pitch) as input variables of a multivariate regression whose target is the power. In this study, a method for multivariate wind turbine power curve analysis is proposed: it is based on sequential features selection, which employs Support Vector Regression with Gauss... [more]
Effects of Supercritical CO2 on Matrix Permeability of Unconventional Formations

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, dissolution, permeability, shale rocks, supercritical carbon dioxide
We studied the effects of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) on the matrix permeability of reservoir rocks from the Eagle Ford, Utica, and Wolfcamp formations. We measured permeability using argon before exposure of the samples to scCO2 over time periods ranging from days to weeks. We measured permeability (and the change of permeability with confining pressure) when both argon and scCO2 were the pore fluids. In all three formations, we generally observe a negative correlation between initial permeability and carbonate content—the higher the carbonate content, the lower the initial permeability. In clay- and organic-rich samples, swelling of the matrix resulting from adsorption decreased the permeability by about 50% when the pore fluid was scCO2 although this permeability change is largely reversible. In carbonate-rich samples, dissolution of carbonate minerals by carbonic acid irreversibly increased matrix permeability, in some cases by more than one order of magnitude. This dissol... [more]
Modeling and Investigation of Demand Response Uncertainty on Reliability Assessment
Jen-Hao Teng, Chia-Hung Hsieh
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, Markov process, Monte Carlo simulation, multi-state probability model, probability intensity
Demand Response (DR) provides an opportunity for customers to reduce their loads during times of high prices and therefore to shave the peak loads. The power outputs of large-scale generator units can be predicted and controlled easily; therefore, the pricing and reliability of conventional power utilities can be assessed straightforwardly. However, the customer loads are very variable and difficult to predict and control; therefore, the integration of DR might cause uncertainty issues on pricing and reliability and is essential to be further investigated. A novel uncertainty model for load reduction is proposed in this paper. The probability intensities of load reduction are first estimated from the measured load reduction variations. A multi-state probability model is then proposed for load reduction and the Markov process is used to calculate the state probabilities. A stochastic analysis scheme using Monte Carlo simulation for pricing and reliability taking the DR uncertainty into... [more]

Keywords: integrated energy system (IES), multiple energy flows, multiple participants, operation optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
An integrated energy system interconnects multiple energies and presents a potential for economics improvement and energy sustainability, which has attracted extensive attention. However, due to the obvious volatility of energy demands, most existing integrated energy systems cannot operate in a totally self-sufficient way but interact with the upper grid frequently. With the increasingly urgent demand for energy saving and emissions reduction, renewable resources have occupied a larger and larger proportion in energy system, and at last they may be dominant in the future. Unlike conventional fossil fuel generation, the renewable resources are less controllable and flexible. To ease the pressure and guarantee the upper grid security, a more independent integrated energy system is required. Driven by that, this paper firstly reviews the optimal strategies considering both independence and benefit from perspectives of individual efforts and union efforts. Firstly, the general optimizatio... [more]
Numerical Investigations of Film Cooling and Particle Impact on the Blade Leading Edge

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capture efficiency, film cooling, impact efficiency, invasion efficiency, leading edge, particle trajectory
As a vital power propulsion device, gas turbines have been widely applied in aircraft. However, fly ash is easily ingested by turbine engines, causing blade abrasion or even film hole blockage. In this study, a three-dimensional turbine cascade model is conducted to analyze particle trajectories at the blade leading edge, under a film-cooled protection. A deposition mechanism, based on the particle sticking model and the particle detachment model, was numerically investigated in this research. Additionally, the invasion efficiency of the AGTB-B1 turbine blade cascade was investigated for the first time. The results indicate that the majority of the impact region is located at the leading edge and on the pressure side. In addition, small particles (1 μm and 5 μm) hardly impact the blade’s surface, and most of the impacted particles are captured by the blade. With particle size increasing, the impact efficiency increases rapidly, and this value exceeds 400% when the particle size is 50 μ... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: electricity production, environmental engineering, fuel cell, use of by-product, waste engine oil
New methods for the use of waste products as input for other technologies are a constant subject of research efforts. One such product is waste engine oil. Due to the constantly increasing number of motor vehicles in the world, the recycling or application of engine oils for energy production purposes is currently of considerable importance. This paper contains research regarding the analysis of the electro-oxidation potential of waste engine oil, and thus the possibility of using such oil as a material in fuel cells. The research demonstrates the basic possibility of the electro-oxidation of this oil emulsion on a platinum electrode in an acid electrolyte (aqueous solution of H2SO4). It was shown that in the temperature range of 20−80 °C, the electro-oxidation of the waste engine oil emulsion occurred for all emulsion concentrations (0.005%, 0.010%, 0.030%, and 0.060% of the reactor volume). The maximum current density obtained in the measurements was 21 mA·cm−2 at the temperature of... [more]

Keywords: microalgae, On/Off control, photobioreactor, PI control, raceway, thin-layer
One of the most critical variables in microalgae-related processes is the pH; it directly determines the overall performance of the production system especially when coupling with wastewater treatment. In microalgae-related wastewater treatment processes, the adequacy of pH has a large impact on the microalgae/bacteria consortium already developing on these systems. For cost-saving reasons, the pH is usually controlled by classical On/Off control algorithms during the daytime period, typically with the dynamics of the system and disturbances not being considered in the design of the control system. This paper presents the modelling and pH control in open photobioreactors, both raceway and thin-layer, using advanced controllers. In both types of photobioreactors, a classic control was implemented and compared with a Proportional−Integral (PI) control, also the operation during only the daylight period and complete daily time was evaluated. Thus, three major variables already studied inc... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: box strength, buckling, corrugated board, crease, laboratory tests, McKee formula, orthotropic panels, perforation
This paper presents a modified analytical formula for estimating the static top-to-bottom compressive strength of corrugated board packaging with different perforations. The analytical framework is based here on Heimerl’s assumption with an extension from a single panel to a full box, enhanced with a numerically calculated critical load. In the proposed method, the torsional and shear stiffness of corrugated cardboard, as well as the panel depth-to-width ratio is implemented in the finite element model used for buckling analysis. The new approach is compared with the successful though the simplified McKee formula and is also verified with the experimental results of various packaging designs made of corrugated cardboard. The obtained results indicate that for boxes containing specific perforations, simplified methods give much larger estimation error than the analytical−numerical approach proposed in the article. To the best knowledge of the authors, the influence of the perforations h... [more]

Keywords: bio-oil, biochar, Biomass, oil palm biomass, pyrolysis, rubberwood biomass
This study investigated the quantitative and qualitative attributes of liquid product and biochar obtained from pyrolysis of woody biomass (rubberwood sawdust (RWS)) and non-woody biomasses (oil palm trunk (OPT) and oil palm fronds (OPF)). The prepared biomass was pyrolyzed at temperatures of 500 °C, 550 °C, and 600 °C by using an agitated bed pyrolysis reactor, and then the yields and characteristics of liquid product and biochar were determined. The results showed that liquid product and biochar yields were in the respective ranges of 35.94−54.40% and 23.46−25.98% (wt.). Pyrolysis of RWS at 550 °C provided the highest liquid yield. The energy content of the water free liquid product was in the range 12.19−22.32 MJ/kg. The liquid product had a low pH and it mainly contained phenol groups as indicated by GC-MS. The biochars had high carbon contents (75.07−82.02%), while their oxygen contents were low (14.22−22%). The higher heating value (HHV) of biochar was in the range 26.42−29.33 MJ... [more]
