Effect of Upstream Side Flow of Wind Turbine on Aerodynamic Noise: Simulation Using Open-Loop Vibration in the Rod in Rod-Airfoil Configuration
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aeroacoustics, flow control, noise reduction, rod-airfoil method, wind turbine
Adaptive and flexible control techniques have recently been examined as methods of controlling flow and reducing the potential noise in vertical axis wind turbines. Two-Dimensional (2D) fluid flow simulation around rod-airfoil is addressed in this study as a simple component of the wind turbine by using Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) equations for prediction of noise using Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) analogy. To control the flow and reduce noise, the active controlling vibration rod method is utilized with a maximum displacement ranging from 0.01 C to 1 C (C: airfoil chord). Acoustic assessment indicates that the leading edge of the blade produces noise, that by applying vibration in cylinder, blade noise in 0.1 C and 1 C decreases by 22 dB and 35 dB, respectively. Applying vibration is aerodynamically helpful since it reduces the fluctuations in the airfoil lift force by approximately 48% and those in the rod by about 46%. Strouhal assessment (frequency) shows th... [more]

Machine Learning-Based Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Dynamic Segmentation Enabled Cognitive Radio Vehicular Network
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cognitive radio, Machine Learning, spectrum sensing, tri-agent reinforcement learning, VANET
A vehicle ad hoc network (VANET) is a solution for road safety, congestion management, and infotainment services. Integration of cognitive radio (CR), known as CR-VANET, is needed to solve the spectrum scarcity problems of VANET. Several research efforts have addressed the concerns of CR-VANET. However, more reliable, robust, and faster spectrum sensing is still a challenge. A novel segment-based CR-VANET (Seg-CR-VANET) architecture is therefore proposed in this paper. Roads are divided equally into segments, and they are sub-segmented based on the probability value. Individual vehicles or secondary users produce local sensing results by choosing an optimal spectrum sensing (SS) technique using a hybrid machine learning algorithm that includes fuzzy and naïve Bayes algorithms. We used dynamic threshold values for the sensing techniques. In this proposed cooperative SS, the segment spectrum agent (SSA) made the global decision using the tri-agent reinforcement learning (TA-RL) algorithm... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: African economies, Asian economies, eco-efficiency, economic growth, efficiency scores, environmental efficiency, resource efficiency
This study aims to evaluate the economic and environmental efficiency of Asian and African economies. In the model proposed, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is considered as the desired output and Greenhouse Gases (GHG), like carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as the undesirable output. Capital, labor, fossil fuels, and renewable energy consumption are regarded as inputs, and the GDP/CO2 ratio is the output, by using a log-linear Translog production function and using data from 2005 until 2018, including 22 Asian and 22 African countries. Results evidence cross-countries heterogeneity among production inputs, namely labor, capital, and type of energy use and its efficiency. The models complement each other and are based on different distributional assumptions and estimation methods while providing a picture of Eco-efficiency in Asian and African economies. Labor and renewable energy share increase technical Eco-efficiency, while fixed capital decreases it under time-variant models. Technical... [more]

New Insights into Hydrothermal Fluid Circulation Affected by Regional Groundwater Flow in the Asal Rift, Republic of Djibouti
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Asal Rift, electrical conductivity, heat source, hydrothermal system, multiphase flow, normal fault, numerical modeling
The Asal Rift hosts a lake located in a depression at 150 m below sea level, where recharge is influenced by regional groundwater flow interacting with the Ghoubbet Sea along the coast of Djibouti. This regional groundwater flow is believed to influence hydrothermal fluid circulation, which we aim to better understand in this study, having the objective of developing concepts for geothermal exploration in the area. To this end, magnetotelluric data acquired in the Asal Rift were processed and analyzed. 1D inversion models of electrical conductivity were interpolated for interpretation. These data were then used to build a 2D hydrogeological model, allowing multiphase flow and heat transfer simulations to be performed, considering the regional groundwater flow near the surface and the site topography, in order to confirm the preferred path of fluid flow. Geophysical data analysis indicates the presence of normal faults, notably the H fault, which may act as a conduit for the circulation... [more]

Optimization for Circulating Cooling Water Distribution of Indirect Dry Cooling System in a Thermal Power Plant under Crosswind Condition with Evolution Strategies Algorithm
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: crosswind, evolution strategies, indirect dry cooling system, operation optimization
Crosswind has an adverse impact on the performance of an indirect dry cooling system. In order to mitigate the adverse influence, this study redistributed the circulating cooling water among air-cooled heat exchanger sectors so that the performance of the indirect dry cooling system could be improved. An evolution strategies algorithm combined with numerical effectiveness-based heat exchanger model was established to minimize the operation costs of the whole system. Based on a 660 MW practical power plant, optimal circulating cooling water operation strategies under varied crosswind speeds and ambient temperatures were calculated to show its application. According to the calculated results, the performance of the indirect dry cooling system could be enhanced by optimizing circulating cooling water distribution under any crosswind speed, especially under high ambient wind speeds. There is a slight promotion of the coal savings with a rise in ambient temperature: improvements of about 5%... [more]

Robust Distributed Secondary Voltage Restoration Control of AC Microgrids under Multiple Communication Delays
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: consensus algorithms, linear matrix inequalities, microgrid, multi-agent systems, secondary control, sliding mode control, time delay systems, voltage control
This paper focuses on the robust distributed secondary voltage restoration control of AC microgrids (MGs) under multiple communication delays and nonlinear model uncertainties. The problem is addressed in a multi-agent fashion where the generators’ local controllers play the role of cooperative agents communicating over a network and where electrical couplings among generators are interpreted as disturbances to be rejected. Communications are considered to be affected by heterogeneous network-induced time-varying delays with given upper-bounds and the MG is subjected to nonlinear model uncertainties and abrupt changes in the operating working condition. Robustness against uncertainties is achieved by means of an integral sliding mode control term embedded in the control protocol. Then, the global voltage restoration stability, despite the communication delays, is demonstrated through a Lyapunov-Krasovskii analysis. Given the delays’ bounds, and because the resulting stability condition... [more]

A Novel Fault Location Method for Power Cables Based on an Unsupervised Learning Algorithm
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: fault location, power cable, sheath current, traveling wave, unsupervised learning
In order to locate the short-circuit fault in power cable systems accurately and in a timely manner, a novel fault location method based on traveling waves is proposed, which has been improved by unsupervised learning algorithms. There are three main steps of the method: (1) build a matrix of the traveling waves associated with the sheath currents of the cables; (2) cluster the data in the matrix according to its density level and the stability, using Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN); (3) search for the characteristic cluster point(s) of the two branch clusters with the smallest density level to identify the arrival time of the traveling wave. The main improvement is that high-dimensional data can be directly used for the clustering, making the method more effective and accurate. A Power System Computer Aided Design (PSCAD) simulation has been carried out for typical power cable circuits. The results indicate that the hierarchical struc... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning, cogeneration, dish-Stirling concentrator, energy saving, heat pump, thermal solar energy
Energy consumed for air conditioning in residential and tertiary sectors accounts for a large share of global use. To reduce the environmental impacts burdening the covering of such demands, the adoption of renewable energy technologies is increasing. In this regard, this paper evaluates the energy and environmental benefits achievable by integrating a dish-Stirling concentrator into energy systems used for meeting the air conditioning demand of an office building. Two typical reference energy plants are assumed: (i) a natural gas boiler for heating purposes and air-cooled chillers for the cooling periods, and (ii) a reversible heat pump for both heating and cooling. For both systems, a dish-Stirling concentrator is assumed to operate first in electric-mode and then in a cogenerative-mode. Detailed models are adopted for plant components and implemented in the TRNSYS environment. Results show that when the concentrator is operating in electric-mode the electricity purchased from the gr... [more]

A Theoretical Analysis of Mobility Detection in Connectivity-Based Localization for Short-Range Networks
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: connectivity-based localization, mobility detection, mobility tracking, theoretical analysis
This paper presents a theoretical analysis of mobility detection in connectivity-based localization, which exploits connectivity information as range measurements to anchors at a known location, to investigate how well and how precise mobility can be detected with connectivity in short-range networks. We derive mobility detection, miss detection, and false alarm probabilities in terms of a mobility detection threshold, defined as the minimum distance to detect the mobility, under the shadow fading channel and arbitrary mobility models to take into account practical and general scenarios. Based on the derivations, we address the threshold determination with the criteria in the sense of the minimum average error from miss detection and false alarm. Numerical and simulation evaluations are performed to verify our theoretical derivations, to show that increasing anchor numbers can improve the mobility detection probability with a smaller detection threshold, and that the probabilities are... Analysis of the Inner Fluid-Dynamics of Scroll Compressors and Comparison between CFD Numerical and Modelling Approaches
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial gap, CFD analysis, positive displacement machine, scroll, turbulent model, unsteady phenomena
Scroll compressors are widely adopted machines in both refrigeration systems and heat pumps. However, their efficiency is basically poor and constitutes the main bottleneck for improving the overall system performance. In fact, due to the complex machine fluid dynamics, scroll design is mainly based on theoretical and/or semi-empirical approaches. Designs strategies that do not guarantee an in-depth analysis of the machine behavior can be supplemented with a Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. To this purpose, in the present work, the scroll compressor inner fluid dynamics is numerically analyzed in detail using two CFD software and two different modelling strategies for the axial gap. The analysis of the fluid evolution within the scroll wraps reveals unsteady phenomena developing during the suction and discharge phases, amplified by the axial clearance with negative impact on the main fluid flow (e.g., −13% of average mass flow rate for an axial gap of 30 μ) and on the scroll... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: abatement technology, CO2 emissions reduction, greenhouse gas emissions, pulp and paper sector
The pulp and paper (P&P) sector is a dynamic manufacturing industry and plays an essential role in the Austrian economy. However, the sector, which consumes about 20 TWh of final energy, is responsible for 7% of Austria’s industrial CO2 emissions. This study, intending to assess the potential for improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions in the Austrian context in the P&P sector, uses a bottom-up approach model. The model is applied to analyze the energy consumption (heat and electricity) and CO2 emissions in the main processes, related to the P&P production from virgin or recycled fibers. Afterward, technological options to reduce energy consumption and fossil CO2 emissions for P&P production are investigated, and various low-carbon technologies are applied to the model. For each of the selected technologies, the potential of emission reduction and energy savings up to 2050 is estimated. Finally, a series of low-carbon technology-based scenarios are developed and evaluated. T... [more]

Keywords: Dual Two-Level Voltage Source Inverter (DTL VSI), oscillation damping, small signal stability analysis, stability enhancement, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), Two-Level Voltage Source Inverter (TL VSI), Virtual Inertia, Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG)
In this paper, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) concept is utilized in the controller of the grid-connected dual two-level voltage source inverter (DTL VSI). First, the topology of the VSG and the DTL VSI are presented. Then, the state-space equations of the DTL VSI and the grid-connected two-level voltage source inverter (TL VSI), regarding the presence of the phase-locked loop (PLL) and the VSG, are given. Next, the small-signal modeling of the DTL VSI and the TL VSI is realized. Eventually, the stability enhancement in the DTL VSI compared with the TL VSI is demonstrated. In the TL VSI, large values of virtual inertia could result in oscillations in the power system. However, the ability of the DTL VSI in damping oscillations is deduced. Furthermore, in the presence of nonlinear loads, the potentiality of the DTL VSI in reducing grid current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is evaluated. Finally, by using a proper reference current command signal, the abilities of the DTL VSI... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: di-carbazole, dye-sensitized solar cell, greenhouse, iodine-free electrolyte, spectral engineering
For the first time in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology, a di-carbazole-based dye was synthesized and evaluated for its usage as a potential sensitizer for the development of wavelength selective semi-transparent DSSCs for greenhouses-oriented applications. The dye was designed to demonstrate a blue light absorption, allowing a high transmittance in the red region of the visible light, even after its adsorption on the anode semiconductor, which is the most important one for the photosynthetic action of the plants. The application of the new dye to DSSCs was examined using either a high-performance iodide-based electrolyte or a highly transparent iodine-free electrolyte to determine a good balance between electric power generation and device transparency. The spectral engineered DSSCs demonstrated quite promising characteristics, providing a high external quantum efficiency (higher than 70%) in the whole blue−green region of the visible light, while allowing high transparency... Subject: Materials
Keywords: ceramic insulator, densification behavior, flash sintering
Ceramic outdoor insulators play an important role in electrical insulation and mechanical support because of good chemical and thermal stability, which have been widely used in power systems. However, the brittleness and surface discharge of ceramic material greatly limit the application of ceramic insulators. From the perspective of sintering technology, flash sintering technology is used to improve the performance of ceramic insulators. In this paper, the simulation model of producing the ceramic insulator by the flash sintering technology was set up. Material Studio was used to study the influence of electric field intensity and temperature on the alumina unit cell. COMSOL was used to study the influence of electric field intensity and current density on sintering speed, density and grain size. Obtained results showed that under high temperature and high voltage, the volume of the unit cell becomes smaller and the atoms are arranged more closely. The increase of current density can... Keywords: atomic layer deposition, charge transporting materials, perovskite
Charge transporting materials (CTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have played an important role in improving the stability by replacing the liquid electrolyte with solid state electron or hole conductors and enhancing the photovoltaic efficiency by the efficient electron collection. Many organic and inorganic materials for charge transporting in PSCs have been studied and applied to increase the charge extraction, transport and collection, such as Spiro-OMeTAD for hole transporting material (HTM), TiO2 for electron transporting material (ETM) and MoOX for HTM etc. However, recently inorganic CTMs are used to replace the disadvantages of organic materials in PSCs such as, the long-term operational instability, low charge mobility. Especially, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has many advantages in obtaining the conformal, dense and virtually pinhole-free layers. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cable modeling, CM current, DM overvoltage, filter design, motor drives, PWM
Aiming at the problems emerging in a pulse width modulation (PWM) drive system with long cables, the accurate modeling of power cables is the premise for predicting and analyzing these relevant phenomena, and a proper filter design is the key solution to these problems. This paper proposes high-frequency cable models to represent these frequency-dependent characteristics, especially for the high-frequency resistance of cables, which is an easily overlooked factor that determines the damping of overvoltage. The proposed models can be used for accurately representing the cable characteristics in a wide frequency range, and correctly simulating the differential mode (DM) overvoltage and common mode (CM) current, including the peak value, oscillation frequency, and damping of the transient waveform. In addition, improved filter networks are proposed to suppress the DM voltage and CM current, with the merit of low losses, small volume, and excellent abilities for suppressing overvoltage. Th... Simulation Analysis of CO2-EOR Process and Feasibility of CO2 Storage during EOR
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 utilization and storage, EOR, mobility control, numerical simulation
In this study, oil production and retention were observed and compared in 72 reservoir simulation cases, after which an economic analysis for various CO2 and oil prices was performed. Reservoir simulation cases comprise different combinations of water alternating gas (WAG) ratios, permeabilities, and well distances. These models were set at three different depths; thus different pressure and temperature conditions, to see the impact of miscibility on oil production and CO2 sequestration. Those reservoir conditions affect oil production and CO2 retention differently. The retention trend dependence on depth was not monotonic—optimal retention relative to the amount of injected CO2 could be achieved at middle depths and mediocre permeability as well. Results reflecting different reservoir conditions and injection strategies are shown, and analysis including the utilization factor and the net present value was conducted to examine the feasibility of different scenarios. Subject: Environment
Keywords: argon (Ar) ambient, GRI-Mech 3.0, nitric oxide (NOx), nitrous oxide (N2O), rate of progress, residence time, thermal decomposition
Nitrogen dioxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas that is harmful to the ozone layer and contributes to global warming. Many other nitrogen oxide emissions are controlled using the selective non-catalytic reaction (SNCR) process, but N2O reduction methods are few. To avoid future air pollution problems, N2O reduction from industrial sources is essential. In this study, a N2O decomposition and NO formation under an argon atmospheric N2O gas mixture were observed in a lab-scale SNCR system. The reaction rate and mechanism of N2O were calculated using a reaction path analyzer (CHEMKIN-PRO). The residence time of the gas mixture and the temperature in the reactor were set as experimental variables. The results confirmed that most of the N2O was converted to N2 and NO. The change in the N2O reduction rate increased with the residence time at 1013 and 1113 K, but decreased at 1213 K due to the inverse reaction. NO concentration increased with the residence time at 1013 and 1113 K, but decreased at... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: extraction-distillation, industrial furfural process, lignocellulosic biomass, Process Intensification, Reactive Distillation
Furfural is only derived from lignocellulosic biomass and is an important chemical used in the plastics, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The existing industrial furfural production process, involving reaction and purification steps, suffers from a low yield and intensive energy use. Hence, major improvements are needed to sustainably upgrade the furfural production process. In this study, the conventional furfural process based on a continuous stirred tank reactor and distillation columns was designed and optimized from an actual aqueous xylose solution via a biomass pretreatment step. Subsequently, a reactive distillation (RD) and extraction/distillation (ED) configuration was proposed for the reaction and purification steps, respectively, to improve the process efficiency. RD can remove furfural instantly from the reactive liquid phase and can separate heavy components from the raw furfural stream, while the ED configuration with toluene and butyl chloride used as extrac... In this study, we evaluate the usefulness of mature landfill leachate (MLL) as a carrier allowing hydrodynamic cavitation (HD) of brewery spent grain (BSG). The HD experiments were conducted using an orifice plate with a conical concentric hole of 3/10 mm (inlet/outlet diameter) as a constriction in the cavitation device. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, estimation of thermal properties, finite-element simulations, ground-coupled heat pumps, sandbox experiment
Ground-coupled heat pumps usually employ fields of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs), which must be designed by suitable models. In order to validate a BHE model, it is advisable to compare the computation results with experimental data. A well-known data set was provided by Beier et al. In this paper, we present a new estimate of those properties, obtained by means of 2D finite-element simulations that consider all the details of the experimental setup, including the thin aluminum pipe at the BHE boundary. Our results show that the measured temperatures in the fluid and in the sand can be reproduced very accurately by considering thermal conductivities 0.863 W/(mK) for the grout and 3.22 W/(mK) for the sand, volumetric heat capacities 4.6 MJ/(m3K) for the grout and 3.07 MJ/(m3K) for the sand, and a slightly enhanced heat... Quantifying the Effect of De-Emulsifiers on Acid Treatment in Carbonate Formations

Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid-in-oil emulsions, acidizing additives, carbonate acidizing, de-emulsifiers
Matrix acidizing is a highly successful, effective, and relatively inexpensive approach to enhancing well productivity in carbonate formations. Accordingly, there has been little motivation to address the ways to optimize the acid stimulation process better. Acid-in-oil emulsions that form during this process cause one of the most challenging problems that negatively impact the performance and deliverability, especially when these emulsions are highly stable over extended periods. Such stable emulsions can plug the flow path of oil causing high resistance to flow and potentially reducing well productivity. De-emulsifiers are some of the most widely used acid additives targeting the reduction of emulsion stability. However, there is doubt in the research community on whether there is enough shear mixing that can cause the formation of emulsions inside the rock matrix. Besides, the effectiveness of de-emulsifiers in eliminating such emulsions in the pore space has not been investigated.... [more]
