Comparative Study on Chemical Kinetics Mechanisms for Methane-Based Fuel Mixtures under Engine-Relevant Conditions
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engine-relevant condition, ignition delay time, laminar flame speed, mechanisms, Natural Gas
The use of natural gas in pure or in a blended form with hydrogen and syngas in spark ignition (SI) engines has received much attention in recent years. They have higher diffusion coefficient and laminar flame speed, a small quenching distance and wider flammability limit which compensate the demerits of the lean-burn natural gas combustion. Therefore, a careful examination of the chemical kinetics of combustion of gaseous fuel blends is of great importance. In this paper, performance of the various chemical kinetics mechanisms is compared against experimental data, accumulated for methane-based fuel blends under engine-relevant conditions to find the most appropriate mechanism in engine simulations. Pure methane, methane/syngas, and methane/propane blends are mainly studied at various temperatures, pressures, and equivalence ratios. The ignition delay time and laminar flame speed are used as quantitative metrics to compare the simulation results with the data from experiments. The mec... [more]

PEDRERA. Positive Energy District Renovation Model for Large Scale Actions
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building performance simulation, Driving Urban Transition, Positive Energy District, Renovation Wave, smart districts, sustainable large-scale renovation model
In this paper, we provide a view of the ongoing PEDRERA project, whose main scope is to design a district simulation model able to set and analyze a reliable prediction of potential business scenarios on large scale retrofitting actions, and to evaluate the overall co-benefits resulting from the renovation process of a cluster of buildings. According to this purpose and to a Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) approach, the model combines systemized data—at both building and district scale—from multiple sources and domains. A sensitive analysis of 200 scenarios provided a quick perception on how results will change once inputs are defined, and how attended results will answer to stakeholders’ requirements. In order to enable a clever input analysis and to appraise wide-ranging ranks of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) suited to each stakeholder and design phase targets, the model is currently under the implementation in the urbanZEB tool’s web platform.

Nonlinear Steady-State Optimization of Large-Scale Gas Transmission Networks
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: gas networks, nonlinear optimization, steady-state optimization
The major optimization problem of the gas transmission system is to determine how to operate the compressors in a network to deliver a given flow within the pressure bounds while using minimum compressor power (minimum fuel consumption or maximum network efficiency). Minimization of fuel usage is a major objective to control gas transmission costs. This is one of the problems that has received most of the attention from both practitioners and researchers because of its economic impact. The article describes the algorithm of steady-state optimization of a high-pressure gas network of any structure that minimizes the operating cost of compressors. The developed algorithm uses the “sequential quadratic programming (SQP)” method. The tests carried out on the real network segment confirmed the correctness of the developed algorithm and, at the same time, proved its computational efficiency. Computational results obtained with the SQP method demonstrate the viability of this approach.

A Hybrid Jaya−Powell’s Pattern Search Algorithm for Multi-Objective Optimal Power Flow Incorporating Distributed Generation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generation, hybrid Jaya–PPS algorithm, meta-heuristic, OPF, PPS
A new hybrid meta-heuristic approach Jaya−PPS, which is the combination of the Jaya algorithm and Powell’s Pattern Search method, is proposed in this paper to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem for minimization of fuel cost, emission and real power losses and total voltage deviation simultaneously. The recently developed Jaya algorithm has been applied for the exploration of search space, while the excellent local search capability of the PPS (Powell’s Pattern Search) method has been used for exploitation purposes. Integration of the local search procedure into the classical Jaya algorithm was carried out in three different ways, which resulted in three versions, namely, J-PPS1, J-PPS2 and J-PPS3. These three versions of the proposed hybrid Jaya−PPS approach were developed and implemented to solve the OPF problem in the standard IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus systems integrated with distributed generating units optimizing four objective functions simultaneously and IEEE 118-bus sy... Influence of Clearance Flow on Dynamic Hydraulic Forces of Pump-Turbine during Runaway Transient Process
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clearance flow patterns, clearance leakage, pump-turbine, runaway transient process, runner forces
The clearance flow around the pump-turbine runner has significant influences on unit vibrations, which may cause accidents in transient processes. The dynamic hydraulic forces and flow patterns in the clearance flow channel (CFC) of a low specific-speed pump-turbine were analyzed based on 3D CFD simulations during the runaway oscillating process. It is shown that the axial force of the runner periodically fluctuates with large amplitudes, and its components in CFC and the main flow channel (MFC) demonstrate a similar significance level. The CFC component was formulated as a function of the clearance inlet pressure and rotational speed, while the MFC component as a function of the momentum changing rate and the runner outlet pressure force. The fluctuation of runner radial force is mainly caused by the flow evolution in MFC, however, the flow in CFC aggravates it. The pressure in CFC shows a few pulsating signals from MFC, and the radial pressure drop in CFC is proportional to the squar... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis of Steel-Plate Concrete Containment against a Large Commercial Aircraft
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: force time-history analysis method, impact dynamics, large commercial aircraft impact, sensitivity analysis, steel-plate concrete (SC) containment
Due to the excellent impact resistant performance of steel-plate concrete (SC) structure compared with the conventional reinforced concrete (RC) structure, SC structure is preferred to be used in the design of external walls of nuclear island buildings for new nuclear power plants (NPPs). This study aims at evaluating the effect of material and geometric parameters of SC containment on its impact resistant performance, thus the numerical simulation and sensitivity analysis of SC containment subjected to malicious large commercial aircraft attack are conducted based on the force time-history analysis method. The results show that: (1) the impact resistant performance of full SC containment is better than that of half SC containment; (2) for relatively thin full SC containment, the impact response and concrete damage can be significantly reduced by the enhancing of concrete strength grade or the increasing of steel plate thickness; (3) for the thicker full SC containment, concrete streng... Investigation Concerning the Excitation Loss of Synchronous Generators in a Stand-Alone Ship Power Plant
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: asynchronous operation of synchronous generators, loss of excitation, stand-alone power plant
The protection systems of ship generators enable them to eliminate potential failures that pose a significant threat to the safety of the crew and the use of the ship. However, due to the fact that marine classification societies do not require the protection of generators against the loss of excitation, such protection is only used sporadically. This article presents an LOE (loss of excitation) analysis of ship generators that operate in parallel. This analysis is supported by simulations and experimental research. The test results show that the positions of the operating points of each generator are interrelated, and changes in the excitation of one (damaged) generator cause automatic changes in the excitation, as well as changes in electromagnetic and energy processes, in the second (efficient) generator. An LOE in one generator causes a dangerous increase in armature currents in both generators. The results of this study prove that the lack of LOE protection at lower levels of exci... [more]

Indoor Climate Performance in a Renovated School Building
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building renovation, CO2 concentration, indoor air, indoor climate comfort, indoor environment, natural ventilation
Indoor climate comfort is important for school buildings. Nowadays, this is a topical problem, especially in renovated buildings. Poorly ventilated school classrooms create improper conditions for classrooms. A post-occupancy study was performed in a school building in temperate climatic conditions. The evaluation was based on the results of long-term monitoring of the natural ventilation strategy and measurements of the carbon dioxide concentration in the school classroom’s indoor environment. The monitoring was carried out in an old school building that was constructed in the 1970s and compared to testing carried out in the same school classroom after the building was renovated in 2016. Surprisingly, the renovated classroom had a significantly higher concentration of CO2. It was found that this was due to the regulation of the heating system and the new airtight windows. The occupants of the renovated classroom have a maintained thermal comfort, but natural ventilation is rather negl... [more]

Generalized Circuit Model of Shielded Capacitive Power Transfer
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacitive power transfer, Modelling, shielded capacitive power transfer
A capacitive power transfer (CPT) system wirelessly transfers energy between coupling plates and performance issues related to CPT systems are resonance conditions, matching impedance, voltage stress, and power loss. A generalized circuit model is proposed for shielded capacitive power transfer (S-CPT) using an algebraic method. The proposed generalized S-CPT model is analyzed based on the symmetric and asymmetric configurations, and the relationship between the parameters of S-CPT is obtained with respect to the resonance condition, matching impedance, voltage stress, and efficiency. The best configuration of a symmetric S-CPT is recommended, and an asymmetric S-CPT is proposed based on the analysis results. Asymmetric-S-CPT hardware was constructed and demonstrated an operating frequency of 13.56 MHz. The hardware experimental result shows the validity and effectiveness of the proposed generalized model for designing S-CPT.

Research on the Evolution and Damage Mechanism of Normal Fault Based on Physical Simulation Experiments and Particle Image Velocimetry Technique
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: normal fault, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), physical simulation experiment, strain energy, strain energy release rate
The formation and evolution of (normal) fault affect the formation and preservation of some reservoirs, such as fault-block reservoirs and faulted reservoirs. Strain energy is one of the parameters describing the strength of tectonic activity. Thus, the formation and evolution of normal fault can be studied by analyzing the variation of strain energy in strata. In this work, we used physical simulation to study the formation and evolution of normal fault from a strain energy perspective. Based on the similarity principle, we designed and conducted three repeated physical simulation experiments according to the normal fault in the Yanchang Formation of Jinhe oilfield, Ordos Basin, China, and obtained dip angle, fault displacement, and strain energy via the velocity profile recorded by high-resolution Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). As a result, the strain energy is mainly released in the normal fault line zone, and can thus serve as channels for oil/gas migration and escape routes con... [more]

Optimal Design and Analysis of Sector-Coupled Energy System in Northeast Japan
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy system, power-to-gas, power-to-heat, sector coupling, vehicle-to-grid
As for research on sector-coupled energy systems, few studies comprehensively deal with energy carriers and energy demand sectors. Moreover, few studies have analyzed energy conversion functions such as Power-to-Gas, Power-to-Heat, and Vehicle-to-Grid on the energy system performance. This study clarifies the required renewable resources and costs in the sector-coupled energy system and cost-optimal installed capacity and operation. We formulated an optimization model considering sector coupling and conducted a case study applying the model in the Tohoku region. As a result, due to sector coupling, the total primary energy supply (TPES) is expected to decrease, and system costs are expected to increase from 1.8 to 2.4 times the current level. System costs were minimized when maximizing the use of V2G by electric vehicles and district heating systems (DHS). From the hourly analysis, it becomes clear that the peak cut effect by Power-to-Heat and the peak shift effect by Vehicle-to-Grid r... [more]

Keywords: correlation analysis, expectation and maximization (EM) algorithm, photovoltaic power output prediction, probabilistic method
Photovoltaics are methods used to generate electricity by using solar cells, which convert natural energy from the sun. This generation makes use of unlimited natural energy. However, this generation is irregular because they depend on weather occurrences. For this reason, there is a need to improve their economic efficiency through accurate predictions and reducing their uncertainty. Most researches were conducted to predict photovoltaic generation with various machine learning and deep learning methods that have complicated structures and over-fitted performances. As improving the performance, this paper explores the probabilistic approach to improve the prediction of the photovoltaic rate of power output per hour. This research conducted a variable correlation analysis with output values and a specific EM algorithm (expectation and maximization) made from 6054 observations. A comparison was made between the performance of the EM algorithm with five different machine learning algorit... [more]

Energy Conservation Measures for a Research Data Center in an Academic Campus
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data center, energy consumption, energy savings
Simulation and experimental studies were conducted to investigate energy consumption, develop ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures), and analyze temperature increase under a power failure scenario for a research data center at Youngstown State University. Two ECMs were developed to improve energy consumption by analyzing the thermal performance of the data center: (1) increase the return temperature in air conditioning vents; (2) provide cold aisle containment with the set point temperature increase. A transient analysis was conducted under a cooling system failure scenario to predict the temperature variation over time. The results suggest that it takes 600 s to increase the server inlet temperature by 16.1 °C for the baseline model. In addition, in the ECM #2, the maximum temperature at the server inlet did not reach 40 °C under the air conditioning system failure scenario, which is the maximum operating temperature of the ASHRAE A3 envelop.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ejector, Energy, heat recovery, low-grade heat, R245fa, Simulation, system, thermal
This paper describes an ejector model for the prediction of on-design performance under available conditions. This is a direct method of calculating the optimal ejector performance (entrainment ratio or ER) without the need for iterative methods, which have been conventionally used. The values of three ejector efficiencies used to account for losses in the ejector are calculated by using a systematic approach (by employing CFD analysis) rather than the hit and trial method. Both experimental and analytical data from literature are used to validate the presented analytical model with good agreement for on-design performance. R245fa working fluid has been used for low-grade heat applications, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) has been employed for simulating the proposed model. The presented model is suitable for integration with any thermal system model and its optimization because of its direct, non-iterative methodology. This model is a non-dimensional model and therefore requires... [more]

A Progressive Period Optimal Power Flow for Systems with High Penetration of Variable Renewable Energy Sources
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: balancing reserve, day-ahead scheduling, dispatch operations, interval optimal power flow, linear-time interval, period optimal power flow, real-time dispatch
Renewable energy sources including wind farms and solar sites, have been rapidly integrated within power systems for economic and environmental reasons. Unfortunately, many renewable energy sources suffer from variability and uncertainty, which may jeopardize security and stability of the power system. To face this challenge, it is necessary to develop new methods to manage increasing supply-side uncertainty within operational strategies. In modern power system operations, the optimal power flow (OPF) is essential to all stages of the system operational horizon; underlying both day-ahead scheduling and real-time dispatch decisions. The dispatch levels determined are then implemented for the duration of the dispatch interval, with the expectation that frequency response and balancing reserves are sufficient to manage intra-interval deviations. To achieve more accurate generation schedules and better reliability with increasing renewable resources, the OPF must be solved faster and with... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: active front end, CM filter, electromagnetic compatibility, EMI filter design, filter topology, motor drives, power electronic converters, volume minimization
The size of back-to-back converters with active front end is significantly determined by the size of the passive filter components. This paper presents a new complete EMC filter concept for this type of converter system that is effective on the input and the output. This involves filtering the main common mode interferences from the grid and motor sides with a single CM choke. Since only the difference of the generated common mode voltage-time areas of both converters is absorbed by this component, the size of the required filter can be greatly reduced compared to conventional filter concepts. The concept is validated on a grid feeding inverter that can be connected to the public distribution network with an output power of 63 kW. The size reduction is demonstrated by means of a design example on a system with the same power and electrical requirements. It is elaborated why, applying the new filter concept, the impedance of the DC link potentials to ground and other electrical potentia... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: harmonic overlap effect, high power conversion, low switching frequency modulation, multilevel converters
In most high power industrial applications, the low switching frequency modulations (LSFM) are usually implemented to reduce power loss and heat dissipation pressure. However, there are some unexpected influences caused by the low order harmonic sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), such as the imbalanced submodule power in cascaded half-bridge inverter (CHB) and limited output power capability in H-bridge neutral-point-clamped (HNPC) converter. This paper starts by generalizing the basic characteristic of two-level SPWM, then deeply investigates the influences of low-frequency modulation on the operation of the circuits. They are classified into three mechanisms and generally named as harmonic overlap effect (HOE). The corresponding solutions to copy with the mechanisms are proposed and verified in some topologies through high-power simulations in simulations. In addition, a comprehensive summary of the influences and solutions of these effects on typical high power converters is... [more]

Impact of Renewable Energy Sources on Power System Flexibility Requirements
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand-side parameters, hourly and daily time scales, net and residual load, power system flexibility, variable and intermittent RES
A power system can be defined as flexible if it can within economic and technological boundaries respond quickly and adequately to variations in supply and demand. The ongoing penetration of variable and intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) like wind and solar imposes additional and more critical requirement on power system flexibility. In this paper we propose a method to quantify these requirements based on the comparison of seven demand side parameters describing the statistical properties of the net load and the residual load of the referred power system. Each one of these parameters reflects a separate requirement on the available conventional generation in hourly and daily time scales—ramp up and ramp-down capabilities, technological minimum of generation, daily variation of generation. The proposed approach can be used to predict the requirements for generation flexibility according to the expected scenario of RES penetration in the future development of energy power syst... [more]
