Subject: Environment
Keywords: engine performance, environment, exhaust emissions, lubricating oil regeneration, pollution, spark-ignition engine
The protection of the environment and pollution control are issues of paramount importance. Researchers today are engrossed in mitigating the harmful impacts of petroleum waste on the environment. Lubricating oils, which are essential for the smooth operation of engines, are often disposed of improperly after completing their life. In the experimental work presented in this paper, deteriorated engine oil was regenerated using the acid treatment method and was reused in the engine. The comparison of the properties of reused oil, the engine’s performance, and the emissions from the engine are presented. The reuse of regenerated oil, the evaluation of performance, and emissions establish the usefulness of the regeneration of waste lubricating oil. For the used oil, total acid number (TAN), specific gravity, flash point, ash content, and kinematic viscosity changed by 60.7%, 6.7%, 4.4%, 96%, and 15.5%, respectively, compared with fresh oil. The regeneration partially restored all the lost... [more]

Keywords: consensus, distributed control, distributed generation, droop control, finite-time, microgrid, multi-agent, primary control, secondary control, smart grid
In this research work, a resilient finite-time consensus-based distributed secondary control protocol is presented for droop-based distributed generating (DG) units of an islanded AC microgrid (MG). Through a multi-agent control structure, the DG units of the microgrid adjust their active power outputs so that they reach an agreed-upon value in a finite time. Concurrently, all the DG units are forced to operate with their frequencies regulated to the reference MG frequency in a finite time, despite time-varying load perturbations. Each DG unit is provided with a hierarchical control architecture, where the primary control is achieved using the droop control method, while the secondary control is established through the proposed distributed control protocol. The communication between DG units takes place over a sparse communication network. The proposed control protocol is robust to both small and sufficiently large communication latencies and it supports the plug-and-play feature of DG... [more]
Applying Artificial Intelligence to Predict the Composition of Syngas Using Rice Husks: A Comparison of Artificial Neural Networks and Gradient Boosting Regression

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, Biomass, gasification, gradient boosting regression, hydrogen production, rice husk, steam-air updraft gasifier
The purpose of this study is to utilize two artificial intelligence (AI) models to predict the syngas composition of a fixed bed updraft gasifier for the gasification of rice husks. Air and steam-air mixtures are the gasifying agents. In the present work, the feeding rate of rice husks is kept constant, while the air and steam flow rates vary in each case. The consideration of various operating conditions provides a clear comparison between air and steam-air gasification. The effects of the reactor temperature, steam-air flow rate, and the ratio of steam to biomass are investigated here. The concentrations of combustible gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane in syngas are increased when using the steam-air mixture. Two AI models, namely artificial neural network (ANN) and gradient boosting regression (GBR), are applied to predict the syngas compositions using the experimental data. A total of 74 sets of data are analyzed. The compositions of five gases (CO, CO2, H2, CH4,... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aquatic insects, correlated color temperature, diel periodicity, disruptive nocturnal light exposure, ecosystem, light pollution, outdoor nighttime lighting, phototactic response, polarization, Sustainability
Phototactic and polarotactic aquatic insects, such as mayflies, can be drawn to electric lighting on bridges at night. Past research investigating the effect of light intensity, polarization, and spectrum on mayflies suggests that a combination of different techniques can reduce the number of mayflies attracted to bridges. Here, various lighting strategies are systematically tested on Veterans Memorial Bridge in Pennsylvania to investigate the effect of lighting on mayflies and address safety concerns caused by their mass crowding. Isolated trials on different parts of the bridge tested the effectiveness of correlated color temperature, chromaticity, ultraviolet radiation, shielding, and polarization. Results indicate that mayflies were more attracted to ultraviolet radiation, blue and green light, and polarized light than other lighting conditions. Shielding was minimally effective in reducing the number of mayflies on the bridge when supported by the change in light source spectrum.... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, knowledge transfer, regional innovation system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social network
Aim of the research is to analyze regional gaps in terms of renewable energy generation across Poland. For this purpose, four types of regions were outlined based on two indicators: the existing renewable energy generation capacity and the current regional energy demand revealed through the number of residents. This classification allowed to reveal regions in Poland that have distinct features of energy gaps and peripherality, while also more successful regions with renewable energy surpluses and distinct sustainable energy potential. For each of the region type key potential systemic problems in terms of renewable energy generation development were given. To understand how peripheral regions and regions with energy gaps could be supported in their development of renewable energy generation the regional innovation systems, social networks, knowledge and technology transfer and diffusion were substantiated. Results of the research can serve as an aid in development of national and regio... [more]

Keywords: convolutional neural network (CNN), deep learning, load identification, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), temporal bar graph, temporal patternization
Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) techniques are effective for managing energy and for addressing imbalances between the energy demand and supply. Various studies based on deep learning have reported the classification of appliances from aggregated power signals. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called a temporal bar graph, which patternizes the operational status of the appliances and time in order to extract the inherent features from the aggregated power signals for efficient load identification. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a temporal bar graph was applied to the total power and tested on three state-of-the-art deep learning techniques that previously exhibited superior performance in image classification tasks—namely, Extreme Inception (Xception), Very Deep One Dimensional CNN (VDOCNN), and Concatenate-DenseNet121. The UK Domestic Appliance-Level Electricity (UK-DALE) and Tracebase datasets were used for our experiments. The results of the five-... [more]

Keywords: cluster of buildings, deep reinforcement learning, demand response, energy flexibility, energy management
Demand Response (DR) programs represent an effective way to optimally manage building energy demand while increasing Renewable Energy Sources (RES) integration and grid reliability, helping the decarbonization of the electricity sector. To fully exploit such opportunities, buildings are required to become sources of energy flexibility, adapting their energy demand to meet specific grid requirements. However, in most cases, the energy flexibility of a single building is typically too small to be exploited in the flexibility market, highlighting the necessity to perform analysis at a multiple-building scale. This study explores the economic benefits associated with the implementation of a Reinforcement Learning (RL) control strategy for the participation in an incentive-based demand response program of a cluster of commercial buildings. To this purpose, optimized Rule-Based Control (RBC) strategies are compared with a RL controller. Moreover, a hybrid control strategy exploiting both RBC... [more]
Mathematical Modeling of the Dynamics of Linear Electrical Systems with Parallel Calculations
Sławomir Cieślik
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AVIS method, dynamic behavior of power systems, electrical system dynamics, power system simulation, power systems
The dynamics of power systems is often analyzed using real-time simulators. The basic requirements of these simulators are the speed of obtaining the results and their accuracy. Known algorithms (backward Euler or trapezoidal rule) used in real-time simulations force the integration time step to be reduced to obtain the appropriate accuracy, which extends the time of obtaining the results. The acceleration of obtaining the results is achieved by using parallel calculations. The paper presents an algorithm for mathematical modeling of the dynamics of linear electrical systems, which works stably with a relatively large integration time step and with accuracy much better than other algorithms widely described in the literature. The algorithm takes into account the possibility of using parallel calculations. The proposed algorithm combines the advantages of known methods used in the analysis of electrical circuits, such as nodal analysis, multi-terminal electrical component theory, and tr... [more]

Keywords: harmonic distortion, metaheuristic search algorithms, power converters, pulse-width modulation
Electric variable speed drives (VSD) have been replacing mechanic and hydraulic systems in many sectors of industry and transportation because of their better performance and reduced cost. However, the electric systems still face the issue of being considered less reliable than the mechanical ones. For this reason, researchers have been actively investigating effective ways to increase the reliability of such systems. This paper is focused on the analysis of the common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the operation of the VSDs which directly affects to the lifetime and reliability of the complete system. The method is based on the mathematical description of the harmonic spectrum of the CMV depending on the PWM method implementation. A generalized PWM method where the carriers present a variable phase-displacement is developed. As a result of the presented analysis, the CMV reduction is achieved by applying the PWM method with optimal carrier phase-displacement angles without any extern... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon deposition, cerium, Hydrogen, perovskites, sintering, strontium
The development of a transition-metal-based catalyst with concomitant high activity and stability due to its distinguishing characteristics, yielding an abundance of active sites, is considered to be the bottleneck for the dry reforming of methane (DRM). This work presents the catalytic activity and durability of SrNiO3 and CeNiO3 perovskites for syngas production via DRM. CeNiO3 exhibits a higher specific surface area, pore volume, number of reducible species, and nickel dispersion when compared to SrNiO3. The catalytic activity results demonstrate higher CH4 (54.3%) and CO2 (64.8%) conversions for CeNiO3, compared to 22% (CH4 conversion) and 34.7% (CO2 conversion) for SrNiO3. The decrease in catalytic activity after replacing cerium with strontium is attributed to a decrease in specific surface area and pore volume, and nickel active sites covered with strontium carbonate. The stability results reveal the deactivation of both the catalysts (SrNiO3 and CeNiO3) but SrNiO3 showed more d... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: innovation, innovation-active enterprises, renewable energy sector, small business, sustainable development
One of the biggest problems of the modern economy is the depletion of traditional energy sources. Despite the fact that this problem was noticed several dozen years ago, steps to solve it were taken relatively recently. In December 2017, the European Union adopted a position on the directive, promoting the use of energy from renewable sources in all Member States. The EU has committed itself that by 2030, at least 27% of its energy consumption will come from renewable sources. On the one hand, it is a huge challenge, but on the other hand, it is an opportunity to achieve economic growth through innovation and a sustainable energy policy. On the Polish market, the chance to achieve the assumed plan is offered mainly by small companies that have been involved in innovative activities in the renewable energy sector in recent years. Innovation is an extraordinarily important determinant of the sustainable development of economies across the world. However, introducing it into business prac... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, modernization, Optimization
The impact of thermal comfort demand on the renovation process was carried out on an optimization basis for the thermo-modernization process of an exemplary single-family home located in Warsaw. The verified TRNSYS simulation program was used to generate a set of variants of building modernization solutions. This variants set was used afterwards as a database for optimization. The analysis performed includes the internal air temperature, indicators of thermal comfort (PPD), and annual energy demand for heating and cooling, and investment costs of modernization building. The results indicated the importance of analyzing various variants of building modernization solutions. Performing modernization without analyzing its effects can have positive as well as negative consequences, e.g., achieving a significant reduction in the primary energy demands at the expense of the deteriorated thermal comfort of users. It was shown that separate analysis of indicators leads to completely different s... [more]

Keywords: integrated energy system, investment economy, medium temperature characteristics, thermal energy storage configuration
Distributed thermal energy storage (DTES) provides specific opportunities to realize the sustainable and economic operation of urban electric heat integrated energy systems (UEHIES). However, the construction of the theory of the model and the configuration method of thermal storage for distributed application are still challenging. This paper analyzes the heat absorption and release process between the DTES internal heat storage medium and the heat network transfer medium, refines the relationship between heat transfer power and temperature characteristics, and establishes a water thermal energy storage and electric heater phase change thermal energy storage model, considering medium temperature characteristics. Combined with the temperature transmission delay characteristics of a heat network, a two-stage optimal configuration model of DTES for UEHIES is proposed. The results show that considering the temperature characteristics in the configuration method can accurately reflect the... [more]

An investigation of the fuel heating, vapor formation, and cavitation erosion location patterns inside a five-hole common rail diesel fuel injector, occurring during the early opening period of the needle valve (from 2 μm to 80 μm), discharging at pressures of up to 450 MPa, is presented. Numerical simulations were performed using the explicit density-based solver of the compressible Navier−Stokes (NS) and energy conservation equations. The flow solver was combined with tabulated property data for a four-component diesel fuel surrogate, derived from the perturbed chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) equation of state (EoS), which allowed for a significant amount of the fuel’s physical and transport properties to be quantified. The Wall Adapting Local Eddy viscosity (WALE) Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model was used to resolve sub-grid scale turbulence, while a cell-based mesh deformation arbitrary Lagrangian−Eulerian (ALE) formulation was used for modelling the injector’... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC collection system, economic, offshore wind power, reliability, universal generating function
One key directive to realize the global transition towards net-zero emission goals is to integrate more renewable energy resources into the generation mix. Due to higher and more consistent wind speeds, offshore wind farms (OWFs) have the potential to generate more energy at a steadier rate than their onshore counterpart. However, at the collection system level, all the OWFs use alternating current (AC) technology at present. Nonetheless, with an increasing capacity of the single wind turbine (WT) and larger distances to the shore, the use of direct current (DC) technology at the collection system level is beneficial. To select a suitable DC collection system topology, this paper proposes a comprehensive analytical reliability evaluation method, based on the Universal Generating Function technique, together with associated economic factors. Four candidates DC collection system options were evaluated with different WT capacities for a 400 MW OWF. The availability indices such as Generat... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: failure mode, hybrid model predictive control, real-time optimization, reconfiguration, shipboard power system
Shipboard integrated power systems, the key technology of ship electrification, call for effective failure mode power management control strategy to achieve the safe and reliable operation in dynamic reconfiguration. Considering switch reconfiguration with system dynamics and power balance restoration after reconfiguration, in this paper, the optimization objective function of optimal management for ship failure mode is established as a hybrid model predictive control problem from the perspective of hybrid system. To meet the needs for fast computation, a hierarchical hybrid model predictive control algorithm is proposed, which divides the original optimization problem into two stages, and reduces the computation complexity by relaxing constraints and the minimum principle. By applying to a real-time simulator in two scenarios, the results verify the effectivity of the proposed method.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: adoption, consumer behavior, diffusion of innovation, electric vehicle, public policy
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are required from all actors. Adopting plug-in electric vehicles (EV) would reduce light motor vehicle travel emissions, a significant and rising emissions source. To encourage EV uptake, many governments have implemented policies which may be less effective than desired. Using New Zealand as a case study, we surveyed private motorists. The results show that consumers are heterogeneous, with varying car-buying motivations, perceptions, attitudes to EVs and awareness of policies. Uniquely, we segmented motorists into four attitudinal groups to ascertain characteristics potentially affecting EV readiness to provide evidence to improve policies and aid social marketing. Our results show the next-most-ready to buy EVs are early mainstream consumers—designated the EV Positives—who were most concerned about vehicle range, perceptions of EV expense, charging-related inconvenience and the unknown value proposition of batteries, and were relatively una... Keywords: angular reflectivity, glass beads, optic analysis, retro-reflective coatings, Urban Heat Island
Retro-reflectivity is a promising surface capability, which has attracted the interest of researchers for building applications in order to counteract Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects. This work aims at studying the impact of the substrate material on the optic performance of retro-reflective (RR) coatings. Three types of substrate materials were investigated: smooth pine wood panels, rough plywood panels, and smooth acetate sheets. The RR coating samples were made by firstly adding a high reflective white paint onto the substrate material and a homogeneous RR glass beads layer on the top. As a reference case, also diffusive samples, without RR beads, were developed. Samples have been tested through a spectrophotometric and an angular reflectivity analysis. Results show that, despite a lower global reflectance of the RR samples with respect to the diffusive ones, the glass beads coating provides a good retro-reflective capability to all the diffusive samples. Additionally, the roughest... [more]

Keywords: air-type PVT collector, energy analysis, exergy analysis, ISO 9806 standard, outdoor testing
BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) system is a building envelope technology that generates energy by converting solar energy into electricity. However, after producing electrical energy, the remaining solar energy is transferred as heat, raising the temperature at the rear of the BIPV module, and reducing electrical efficiency. On the other hand, a PVT (Photovoltaic Thermal) collector is a device that generates electricity from a PV module and at the same time uses the heat transferred to the air layer inside the collector. In general, the performance of air-type PVT collectors is based on energy analysis using the first law of thermodynamics. Since this performance does not take into account the loss amount, it is not the actual amount of power generation and preheat of the collector that can be used. Therefore, an exergy analysis based on the second law of thermodynamics considering the amount of energy loss must be performed. In this paper, an air-type PVT collector to which pe... [more]

Keywords: artificial clean fog test, discharges, dry bands, monitoring, partial arcs, textured insulator
The aim of this study is the presentation of the results of an in-lab comparative study of electrical and thermal monitoring of artificially polluted, HTV-textured silicone rubber insulators, with different pollution levels. This work is a preliminary study of an in-situ monitoring of 400 kV SiR textured in a polluted environment. The results showed that the rms leakage current magnitude and pulses, and the average dissipated power depended on the pollution levels and the dry-bands formation. The discharge activity and their nature are governed by the pollution level and the voltage. A differentiation and a quantification between dry-band discharge onset and dry-band arc inception is highlighted.
