Stochastic Analysis-Based Volt−Var Curve of Smart Inverters for Combined Voltage Regulation in Distribution Networks
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, photovoltaic generation, stochastic analysis, volt–var curve
The proliferation of renewable energy resources (RES), especially solar photovoltaic (PV) generation resources, causes overvoltage and line overloading in distribution networks. This study proposes a two-level volt−var control method based on multiple timescales. The on-load tap changer (OLTC) operates on an hourly timescale, to regulate the voltage on the secondary winding. In the 15-minutes timescale, PV-connected smart inverters and static var compensators (SVCs) are obliged to compensate the reactive power for the voltage control at the point of common coupling. In the multi-timescale voltage control framework, this study proposes a new multi-sectional volt−var curve (MSVVC) of a PV inverter. The objective of the MSVVC is to minimize the energy loss in the network, improve the voltage profile, and obtain the operational margin of other reactive power compensation devices. In the process of determining the optimal parameters of the MSVVC, stochastic modeling-based load flow analysis... [more]

Implementation of Variable Blade Inertia in OpenFAST to Integrate a Flywheel System in the Rotor of a Wind Turbine
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flywheel, flywheel torque, load simulation, mechanical loads, OpenFAST, rotor imbalance, wind turbine
In this paper, the integration of the dynamic behavior of the flywheel system into the load simulation tool OpenFAST is presented. The flywheel system enables a wind turbine to vary the inertia of its rotor blades to control the power production and, most importantly, to affect the vibratory behavior of wind turbine components. Consequently, in order to simulate the behavior of a wind turbine with a flywheel system in its rotor, the variable blade characteristics need to be considered in the load simulation tool. Currently, computer-aided engineering tools for simulating the mechanical loads of wind turbines are not designed to simulate variable blade inertia. Hence, the goal of this paper is to explain how variable inertias of rotor blades are implanted in such load simulation tools as OpenFAST. OpenFAST is used because of it is free, publicly available, and well documentation. Moreover, OpenFAST is open source, which allows modifications in its source code. This add-on in the load si... Experimental Investigation on the Characteristic Mobilization and Remaining Oil Distribution under CO2 Huff-n-Puff of Chang 7 Continental Shale Oil
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 huff-n-puff, NMR, oil recovery factor, pore scale, remaining oil distribution
The Chang 7 continental shale oil reservoir is tight. The recovery factor is extremely low, the remaining oil is very high, and injecting water to improve oil recovery effectiveness is too hard. Therefore, in this paper, physical simulation experiments of CO2 huff-n-puff shale oil and NMR tests were conducted to study the cycle numbers and permeability on the recovery degree, as well as the characteristics of shale oil mobilization and the remaining oil micro distribution. The results showed that the cumulative oil recovery factors (ORFs) gradually increased in the natural logarithmic form, the single cycle ORFs decreased rapidly in exponential form with the huff-n-puff cycle number, and the biggest economic cycle numbers were between approximately 3 and 5. Furthermore, the higher the permeability, the higher the ORF, but the difference of ORF decreased between the two experimental samples with the cycles. In addition, the gap of production and recovery degree was large between the dif... [more]

Determination and Compensation of Non-Active Torques for Parallel HEV Using PMSM/IM Motor(s)
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active and non-active torque components, FOC control, HEV vehicle, ICE engine, parallel operation, PMSM motor, torque mapping
The paper deals with the determination and compensation of non-active torques of parallel HEV using an auxiliary electrical PMSM or IM motor. The non-active oscillating torque generating by the ICE engine was estimated, and consequently, the compensating torque component of the current was determined. Based on real measured data, the four regimes of operation have been investigated: compensating non-active torques, parallel operation, regenerating for PMSM, and both parallel operations, together with compensation. Using of p-q theory, the power of fundamental harmonic is presented by average values PAV, QAV of total power waveforms p(t), and q(t). Worked-out simulation results are used for sizing and dimensioning of PMSM machine, VSI inverter, and traction accumulator-battery. Circuit simulator Matlab/Simulink was used for all simulation experiments.

The Establishment and Evaluation Method of Artificial Microcracks in Rocks
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial microcrack, permeability, stress difference, triaxial stress
It is necessary to carry out experiments on cores with different degrees of crack development when studying the seepage law of cracked reservoirs and evaluating cracks. The seepage experiment in the laboratory requires cores with different degrees of microcrack development; cores obtained via conventional drilling cannot meet the requirements, and the efficacies and evaluation methods of geological parameters used for artificial cracks are not perfect. In this study, cores are loaded using a triaxial gripper, and cracks are produced by changing the difference of stress; the relationship between the increased rate of permeability and the change in stress concentration is used to evaluate the degree of development of the crack in real time. The angle between the cracks and the maximum principal stress direction, calculated using the Mohr−Coulomb failure criterion, is 20−27.5°, which provides theoretical support for the process of crack creation. The experimental results show that the per... [more]

Application of the BORUTA Algorithm to Input Data Selection for a Model Based on Rough Set Theory (RST) to Prediction Energy Consumption for Building Heating
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BORUTA algorithm, building energy modeling, building load prediction, data selection, rough set theory, thermal improvement of buildings
Energy prediction used for building heating has attracted particular attention because it is often required in the development of various strategies to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, especially those undergoing thermal improvements. The complexity, dynamics, uncertainty, and nonlinearity of existing building energy systems create a great need for modeling techniques. One of them is machine learning models, which are based on input data consisting of features that describe the objects under study. The data describing actual buildings used to build the model may be characterized by missing values, duplicate or inconsistent features, noise, and outliers. Therefore, an extremely important aspect of the prediction model development effort is the proper selection of features to simplify the prediction of energy consumption for heating. In this connection, the goal was to evaluate the usefulness of a model describing the final energy demand rate for building heating using groups... [more]

Improvements in Energy Saving and Thermal Environment after Retrofitting with Interior Insulation in Intermittently Cooled Residences in Hot-Summer/Cold-Winter Zone of China: A Case Study in Chengdu
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cooling energy demand, indoor thermal environment, interior insulation, intermittent cooling operation, real-life scenario measurements
Space cooling is currently the fastest-growing end-user in buildings. The global warming trend combined with increased population and economic development will lead to accelerated growth in space cooling in the future, especially in China. The hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) zone is the most densely populated and economically developed region in China, but with the worst indoor thermal environment. Relatively few studies have been conducted on the actual measurements in the optimization of insulation design under typical intermittent cooling modes in this region. This case study was conducted in Chengdu—the two residences selected were identical in design, but the south bedroom of the case study residence had interior insulation (inside insulation on all opaque interior surfaces of a space) retrofitted in the bedroom area in 2017. In August 2019, a comparative on-site measurement was done to investigate the effect of the retrofit work under three typical intermittent cooling patterns... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), control, digital platform, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), meteorological parameters, monitoring, performances, photovoltaic pumping system, simulation tools
The authors studied a working off-grid type photovoltaic (PV) pumping system for irrigation use. The methodology was based on digitalization analysis and numerical modeling as a preliminary stage. A mathematical model of the PV pumping installation considered the determination of the characteristic equations for all its components. These have been used together with the SISIFO simulation software to achieve the performances of the mechanical and electrical components of an advanced PV pumping system. Its global performance features, namely the monthly energy yield, monthly pumping yield, and monthly total performances (energy and flow rate) were introduced. Digital platform (DP) for PV systems characterized by three advanced technologies—machine learning (ML), digital twin (DT) and artificial intelligence (AI) was developed. The simulation results were discussed for a specific case study conducted for a location in the Southern Romania regarding the irrigation potential, taking into ac... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dampness analysis, electrical tomography, linear regression, Machine Learning, moisture inspection, neural networks, nondestructive evaluation, SVM
This paper presents the results of research on the use of machine learning algorithms and electrical tomography in detecting humidity inside the walls of old buildings and structures. The object of research was a historical building in Wrocław, Poland, built in the first decade of the 19th century. Using the prototype of an electric tomograph of our own design, a number of voltage measurements were made on selected parts of the building. Many algorithmic methods have been preliminarily analyzed. Ultimately, the three models based on machine learning were selected: linear regression with SVM (support vector machine) learner, linear regression with least squares learner, and a multilayer perceptron neural network. The classical Gauss−Newton model was also used in the comparison. Both the experiments based on real measurements and simulation data showed a higher efficiency of machine learning methods than the Gauss−Newton method. The tomographic methods surpassed the point methods in meas... [more]

Stand-Alone Direct Current Power Network Based on Photovoltaics and Lithium-Ion Batteries for Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high voltage direct current transmission, lithium batteries, photovoltaics
Plummeting reserves and increasing demand of freshwater resources have culminated into a global water crisis. Desalination is a potential solution to mitigate the freshwater shortage. However, the process of desalination is expensive and energy-intensive. Due to the water-energy-climate nexus, there is an urgent need to provide sustainable low-cost electrical power for desalination that has the lowest impact on climate and related ecosystem challenges. For a large-scale reverse osmosis desalination plant, we have proposed the design and analysis of a photovoltaics and battery-based stand-alone direct current power network. The design methodology focusses on appropriate sizing, optimum tilt and temperature compensation techniques based on 10 years of irradiation data for the Carlsbad Desalination Plant in California, USA. A decision-tree approach is employed for ensuring hourly load-generation balance. The power flow analysis evaluates self-sufficient generation even during cloud cover... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Batteries, distributed energy resources, energy security, IEEE Standards, microgrid, off-grid, photovoltaics, solar, stand-alone
This paper presents a user-friendly design method for accurately sizing the distributed energy resources of a stand-alone microgrid to meet the critical load demands of a military, commercial, industrial, or residential facility when utility power is not available. The microgrid combines renewable resources such as photovoltaics (PV) with an energy-storage system to increase energy security for facilities with critical loads. The design method’s novelty complies with IEEE Standards 1562 and 1013, and addresses resilience, which is not taken into account in existing design methods. Several case studies simulated with a physics-based model validate the proposed design method and demonstrate how resilience can be included in the design process. Additionally, the design and the simulations were validated by 24 h laboratory experiments conducted on a microgrid assembled using commercial off-the-shelf components.

National Carbon Accounting—Analyzing the Impact of Urbanization and Energy-Related Factors upon CO2 Emissions in Central−Eastern European Countries by Using Machine Learning Algorithms and Panel Data Analysis
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, carbon emissions, energy consumption, energy intensity, environment, urbanization
The work at hand assesses several driving factors of carbon emissions in terms of urbanization and energy-related parameters on a panel of emerging European economies, between 1990 and 2015. The use of machine learning algorithms and panel data analysis offered the possibility to determine the importance of the input variables by applying three algorithms (Random forest, XGBoost, and AdaBoost) and then by modeling the urbanization and the impact of energy intensity on the carbon emissions. The empirical results confirm the relationship between urbanization and energy intensity on CO2 emissions. The findings emphasize that separate components of energy consumption affect carbon emissions and, therefore, a transition toward renewable sources for energy needs is desirable. The models from the current study confirm previous studies’ observations made for other countries and regions. Urbanization, as a process, has an influence on the carbon emissions more than the actual urban regions do,... [more]

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: ash melting behavior, biomass composition, fouling tendency, moisture adsorption isotherm, torrefaction
Abundant biomass is a potential energy source. However, it possesses several challenges when considered for energy applications. Torrefaction, a thermal pretreatment process can improve the properties of biomass as energy source. This study focused on comparing effect of torrefaction operating parameters on agricultural and wood wastes properties as fuel. The physiochemical properties, composition, moisture-biomass interaction and ash melting behavior were determined. The result show that higher torrefaction temperature and longer residence time increased lignin content, reduced hemicellulose and cellulose content. The moisture uptake of torrefied biomass was reduced in the range 2.47−9.94% compared with raw biomass depending on torrefaction temperature that indicate torrefied biomass was more hydrophobic than raw biomass. The moisture adsorption isotherm curve shows type II isotherm based on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller’s (BET) classification and was best described by the Oswin model. I... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: computer aided design, graph transformations, green energy, levelized cost of electricity
The use of formal methods and artificial intelligence has made it possible to automatically design outdoor lighting. Quick design for large cities, in a matter of hours instead of weeks, and analysis of various optimization criteria enables to save energy and tune profit stream from lighting retrofit. Since outdoor lighting is of a large scale, having luminaires on every street in urban areas, and since it needs to be retrofitted every 10 to 15 years, choosing proper parameters and light sources leads to significant energy savings. This paper presents the concept and calculations of Levelized Cost of Electricity for outdoor lighting retrofit. It is understood as cost of energy savings, it is in the range from 23.06 to 54.64 EUR/MWh, based on real-world cases. This makes street and road lighting modernization process the best green “energy source” if compared with the 2018 Fraunhofer Institute cost of electricity renewable energy technologies ranking. Stator Fixed Deadbeat Predictive Torque and Flux Control of a PMSM Drive with Modulated Duty Cycle
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deadbeat predictive control, flux control, PMSM, torque control
Conventional deadbeat control strategies for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are commonly developed reference frames, however, coupling dynamics affect the performance drive, and rotational transformations are required for the synthesis of the final voltage vector (VV). To improve robustness against parameter variations and to directly synthesize the reference voltage vector, in this paper a deadbeat predictive torque and flux control for a PMSM is presented. The proposed controller is developed in the stationary reference frame (α−β). First, the reference VV is obtained from a predictive deadbeat controller. Then, the reference VV is applied to the power inverter by the combination of two voltage vectors. A duty cycle optimization is employed to calculate the required time for the application of each voltage vector. Experimental results based on an FPGA and a comparison of the conventional and the proposed deadbeat controller are presented to validate the proposed method... [more]

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Effect of a Swirler with a High Swirl Number in a Biogas Combustor
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, combustion chamber, optimized swirler, pollutant emissions, strong swirl
Climate change as a worldwide phenomenon is the cause of multinational agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas is one of the most promising biofuels for the integration of clean energy sources; however, biogas has the disadvantage of a low calorific value. To overcome this problem, mechanical devices such as swirlers are implemented in combustion chambers (CCs) to increase their combustion efficiencies. A swirler induces rotation in the airstream that keeps a constant re-ignition of the air−fuel mixture in the combustion. We present the numerical modeling using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental testing of combustion with biogas in a CC, including an optimized swirler in the airstream with a swirl number (Sn) of 2.48. Extended Exergy Analysis (EEA) of Italy, 2013−2017
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: exergy analysis, exergy footprint, extended exergy accounting, sustainability indicators
In recent years, many studies have been published on the applications of exergy analyses to complex systems, including entire countries. Oddly, the results, although consistent, appear to lead to divergent conclusions. The underlying problem is that in a “pure” thermodynamic analysis, the so-called “externalities”, i.e., labor, capital, and environmental costs, are often neglected or only approximately included in the picture. In 1998, an extension of the theory that included the exergy content of the externalities was introduced, called “extended exergy accounting” (EEA). Its novelty consisted of the explicit inclusion of the exergy embodied in the externalities. The aim of this work is to use the results of the extended exergy accounting to obtain an indicator that can be used to assess the sustainable development of a country. First, a novel methodological approach to the theory is presented, based on the exploitation of a very large dataset obtained from several national and Europe... [more]

Improving the Irradiance Data Measured by Silicon-Based Sensors
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: incident solar radiation, pyranometer, silicon sensors, solar reference cell
Silicon-based sensors are widely used for monitoring solar irradiance, in particular, in the field of Photovoltaic (PV) applications. We present a method to correct the global horizontal irradiance measured by silicon-based sensors that reduces the difference to the standard thermopile sensor measurements. A major motivation to use silicon-based sensors for the measurements of irradiance is their lower cost. In addition, their response time is much lower, and their spectral response is much closer to that of the PV systems. The analysis of the differences is based on evaluating four parameters that influence the sensor measurements, namely the temperature, cosine error, spectral mismatch, and calibration factor. Based on the analysis, a correction model is applied to the silicon sensors measurements. The model separates measurements under a clear sky and cloudy sky by combining the clearness index and the solar zenith angle. By applying the correction model on the measurements of the s... [more]

The deployment of renewable energy at the local level can contribute significantly to mitigating climate change, improving energy security and increasing social, economic and environmental benefits. In many countries local authorities play an important role in the local development, but renewable energy deployment is not an obligatory task for them. Hence there are two research questions: (1) Do local governments think investments in renewable energy (RE) are urgent and affordable within the local budgets? (2) How do they react to the public aid co-financing investments in renewable energy? To provide the answer we performed qualitative analysis and non-parametric tests of data from a survey of 252 local authorities, analysis of 292 strategies of local development and datasets of 1170 renewable energy projects co-financed by EU funds under operational programs 2007−2013 and 2014−2020 in Poland. Keywords: bidding zones, clustering, locational marginal prices, power transfer distribution factors, weighted scenarios
The definition of bidding zones is a relevant question for electricity markets. The bidding zones can be identified starting from information on the nodal prices and network topology, considering the operational conditions that may lead to congestion of the transmission lines. A well-designed bidding zone configuration is a key milestone for an efficient market design and a secure power system operation, being the basis for capacity allocation and congestion management processes, as acknowledged in the relevant European regulation. Alternative bidding zone configurations can be identified in a process assisted by the application of clustering methods, which use a predefined set of features, objectives and constraints to determine the partitioning of the network nodes into groups. These groups are then analysed and validated to become candidate bidding zones. Subject: Other
Keywords: isometric sampling method, non-uniform ventilation duct, RBFNN surrogate model, single ventilation duct subsystem (SVDS), stator cooling
Within large turboalternators, the excessive local temperatures and spatially distributed temperature differences can accelerate the deterioration of electrical insulation as well as lead to deformation of components, which may cause major machine malfunctions. In order to homogenise the stator axial temperature distribution whilst reducing the maximum stator temperature, this paper presents a novel non-uniform radial ventilation ducts design methodology. To reduce the huge computational costs resulting from the large-scale model, the stator is decomposed into several single ventilation duct subsystems (SVDSs) along the axial direction, with each SVDS connected in series with the medium of the air gap flow rate.
