Ji-In Kim, Hui-Seon Gang, Jae-Young Pyun, Goo-Rak Kwon
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: camera calibration, indoor positioning, QR code recognition
Numerous studies on positioning technology are ongoing for recognizing the positions of objects accurately. Vision-, sensor-, and signal-based technologies are combined for recognizing the positions of objects outdoors and indoors. While positioning technologies involving wireless communication based on sensors and signals are commonly used in outdoor environments, the performance becomes degraded in indoor environments. Therefore, a vision-based indoor positioning method using a QR code is proposed in this study. A user’s position is measured by determining the current position of a smartphone device accurately based on the QR code recognized with a smartphone camera. The direction, distance, and position are acquired using the relationship between the three-dimensional spatial coordinate information of the camera and the center point coordinates of a two-dimensional planar QR code obtained through camera calibration.

Runhong Liang, Xiaolin Fan, Xianbing Luo, Shuyu Sun, Xingyu Zhu
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: full mass conservation, standard IMPES scheme, three-phase flow, unbiased IMPES scheme
In this work, an improved IMplicit Pressure and Explicit Saturation (IMPES) scheme is proposed to solve the coupled partial differential equations to simulate the three-phase flows in subsurface porous media. This scheme is the first IMPES algorithm for the three-phase flow problem that is locally mass conservative for all phases. The key technique of this novel scheme relies on a new formulation of the discrete pressure equation. Different from the conventional scheme, the discrete pressure equation in this work is obtained by adding together the discrete conservation equations of all phases, thus ensuring the consistency of the pressure equation with the three saturation equations at the discrete level. This consistency is important, but unfortunately it is not satisfied in the conventional IMPES schemes. In this paper, we address and fix an undesired and well-known consequence of this inconsistency in the conventional IMPES in that the computed saturations are conservative only for... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle charging station, GIS, multicriteria decision analysis, sustainable transportation
One of the solutions to reduce environmental emissions is related to the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) with sustainable energy. In order to be able to increase the number of electric vehicles in circulation, it is important to implement optimal planning and design of the infrastructure, with particular reference to areas equipped with charging stations. The suitable analysis of the location of current electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) is the central theme of this document. The research focused on the actual location of the charging stations of five major EVCS companies in the province by selecting Istanbul as the study area. The study was conducted through a three-step approach and specifically (i) the application of the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method for creating the weights of the 6 main and 18 secondary criteria that influence the location of EVCSs; (ii) a geospatial analysis using GIS considering each criterion and developing the suitability map for the... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: club convergence, convergence, energy innovation, energy patents, environmental policy stringency, HRST, R&D expenditure
Energy innovation is critical for addressing climate change and the ecological transitions of both developed and emerging economies. The present paper aims at the identification and assessment of patterns in energy innovation convergence across a sample of 27 European countries over the period 2000−2018. The research is based on data covering a broad category of patents related to climate change mitigation technologies in the energy sector, including combustion inventions with mitigation potential (e.g., using biomass), extracted from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Statistical Database. Using a nonlinear time-varying factor model, the paper demonstrates that energy innovation efforts in the examined sample follow a pattern of club convergence. The findings allow the identification of three convergence clubs characterised by distinct disparities in energy patent intensity, as measured by the number of patent applications per 10 million inhabitants. Mengmeng Xiao, Shaorong Wang, Zia Ullah
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetry energy-absorbing, D-PMU, low-voltage distribution network, power quality, three-phase imbalance
Three-phase imbalance is a long-term issue existing in low-voltage distribution networks (LVDNs), which consequently has an inverse impact on the safe and optimal operation of LVDNs. Recently, the increasing integration of single-phase distributed generations (DGs) and flexible loads has increased the probability of imbalance occurrence in LVDNs. To overcome the above challenges, this paper proposes a novel methodology based on the concept of “Active Asymmetry Energy-Absorbing (AAEA)” utilizing loads with a back-to-back converter, denoted as “AAEA Unit” in this paper. AAEA Units are deployed and coordinated to actively absorb asymmetry power among three phases for imbalance mitigation in LVDNs based on the high-precision, high-accuracy, and real-time distribution-level phasor measurement unit (D-PMU) data acquisition system and the 5th generation mobile networks (5G) communication channels. Furthermore, the control scheme of the proposed method includes three control units. Specificall... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deterministic mathematical model, energy simulations, solar domestic hot water system, thermal solar collectors, useful energy output
According to the authors of this paper, the mathematical point of view allows us to see what sometimes cannot be seen from the designer’s point of view. The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of the most important parameters (volume of heat storage tanks, daily consumption of domestic hot water, optical efficiency, heat loss coefficient, and total area of a solar collector) on the thermal power output of solar domestic hot water (SDHW) system in European climatic conditions. Three deterministic mathematical models of these relationships for Madrid, Budapest, and Helsinki were created. The database for the development of these models was carried out using computer simulations made in the TRNSYS software environment. The SDHW system located at the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland) was the source of the measurement results used to validate the simulation model. The mathematical optimization procedure showed that the maximum annual useful energy output that can be ob... [more]
Time-Dependent Seismic Hazard Analysis for Induced Seismicity: The Case of St Gallen (Switzerland), Geothermal Field
Vincenzo Convertito, Hossein Ebrahimian, Ortensia Amoroso, Fatemeh Jalayer, Raffaella De Matteis, Paolo Capuano
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ETAS model, induced seismicity, non-Poisson model, seismic hazard analysis
Reliable seismic hazard analyses are crucial to mitigate seismic risk. When dealing with induced seismicity the standard Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) has to be modified because of the peculiar characteristics of the induced events. In particular, the relative shallow depths, small magnitude, a correlation with field operations, and eventually non-Poisson recurrence time. In addition to the well-known problem of estimating the maximum expected magnitude, it is important to take into account how the industrial field operations affect the temporal and spatial distribution of the earthquakes. In fact, during specific stages of the project the seismicity may be hard to be modelled as a Poisson process—as usually done in the standard PSHA—and can cluster near the well or migrate toward hazardous known or—even worse—not known faults. Here we present a technique in which we modify the standard PSHA to compute time-dependent seismic hazard. The technique allows using non-Poisson... [more]

Keywords: energy management, microgrid, optimal scheduling, optimisation, real-life application
As microgrids have gained increasing attention over the last decade, more and more applications have emerged, ranging from islanded remote infrastructures to active building blocks of smart grids. To optimally manage the various microgrid assets towards maximum profit, while taking into account reliability and stability, it is essential to properly schedule the overall operation. To that end, this paper presents an optimal scheduling framework for microgrids both for day-ahead and real-time operation. In terms of real-time, this framework evaluates the real-time operation and, based on deviations, it re-optimises the schedule dynamically in order to continuously provide the best possible solution in terms of economic benefit and energy management. To assess the solution, the designed framework has been deployed to a real-life microgrid establishment consisting of residential loads, a PV array and a storage unit. Results demonstrate not only the benefits of the day-ahead optimal schedul... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: maximizing efficiency, optimal valve timings, skip-cycle, skip-fire, thermal management, variable valve train, x-stroke operation
Spark-ignited internal combustion engines are known to exhibit a decreased brake efficiency in part-load operation. Similarly to cylinder deactivation, the x-stroke operation presented in this paper is an adjustable form of skip-cycle operation. It is an effective measure to increase the efficiency of an internal combustion engine, which has to be equipped with a variable valve train to enable this feature. This paper presents an optimization procedure for the exhaust valve timings applicable to any valid stroke operation number greater than four. In the first part, the gas spring operation, during which all gas exchange valves are closed, is explained, as well as how it affects the indicated efficiency and the blow-by mass flow. In the second part, a simulation model with variable valve timings, parameterized with measurement data obtained on the engine test, is used to find the optimal valve timings. We show that in 12-stroke operation and with a cylinder load of 5 Nm, an indicated e... [more]

Keywords: borehole drilling, critical discontinuities, rock mass, underground caverns
Modern technologies need more mineral resources for energy generation, metallurgical products, chemicals, and many other uses. These resources are usually extracted from the Earth’s crust. Many engineering underground-space infrastructures are left after mining activity, with their very interesting features such as very large storage capacities (e.g., for hydrocarbons, hydrogen, radioactive, or other waste), and long-term geomechanical stability. Our original experiments were carried out in the conditions of an underground metal ore mine where typical mobile drilling rigs, additionally equipped with a set of sensors for recording signals as effects of rock−drill interaction were used for the research testing. A series of boreholes with diameters of Ø38 and lengths of up to 9 m in the rock medium were drilled in the “weak” and “strong” rock masses, and the frequency spectra of their signals were analyzed with the use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field study, Norway, solar collector, solar domestic hot water system, vacuum tube solar collector
A significant part of energy consumption in Northern countries goes to heating. There is no consensus about the most efficient source of renewable heat there. This paper presents a field study for a 7.8 m2 vacuum tube solar collector facility that is conservatively located in the cloudy and cold climate conditions of western Norway. We analyse a year-long operation by examining the rig’s statistics. We show that in Nordic latitudes with rainy climate conditions, a domestic solar hot water system can produce 2200 kWhth/y at a thermal efficiency of up to 72%. The average amount of heat produced by the collectors was up to 14.7 kWhth/d. This was enough to sustain the domestic hot water demand in an average Norwegian household for 6 months with a short period of auxiliary heating. In conclusion, we calculated that a 3× upscaled area facility would deliver over 25 kWhth covering six months of total heat consumption. The payback period for the facility is 12 years.

Subject: Other
Keywords: comparison, design, differential-evolution, electric, electric machine, forced feasibility, Optimization, rare-earth free, synchronous reluctance
Although rare earth materials are the critical component in high torque density permanent magnet machines, their use has historically been a commercial risk. The alternatives that have been in the recent industry focus are synchronous reluctance machines (SyRM). They have lower torque density but also relatively low material cost and higher overload capability. Multi-layer IPM and SyRM machines have significant geometric complexity, resulting in a high number of parameters. Considering that modern machine design requires the use of optimization algorithms with computational load proportional to the number of parameters, the whole design process can take several days. This paper presents novel SyRM parameterization with reduced number of parameters. Furthermore, the paper introduces the novel forced feasibility concept, applied on rotor barrier parameters, resulting in improved optimization convergence with overall optimization time reduced by 12.3%. Heng Nian, Xiao Jin
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: commutation failure, crowbar circuit, DFIG, overvoltage protection, transient characteristic, ultra high voltage direct current
Ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission is an effective means of long-distance transmission of renewable power generation, which has obtained a lot of research and practical applications. The commutation failure is a common DC transmission fault, which will cause the voltage amplitude of the sending ac grid in UHVDC system to first decrease then increase. The existing transient mathematical models of the wind power generation system (WPGS) are difficult to apply to scenarios where the grid voltage changes continuously. A mathematical model suitable for commutation failure is established to analyze the transient reactive power characteristics of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WPGS with the consideration of the crowbar circuit trigger. The correctness of the mathematical model is validated by an experiment based on the control hardware-in-loop (CHIL) platform. Based on the proposed mathematical model, the influence of the crowbar parameters on the reactive... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cogeneration process, multiobjective optimization, off-gas, steel gases, ε-constraint
Increasingly demanding environmental regulations are forcing companies to reduce their impacts caused by their activity while defending the economic viability of their manufacturing processes, especially energy and carbon-intensive ones. Therefore, these challenges must be addressed by posing optimization problems that involve several objectives simultaneously, corresponding to different conditions, and often conflicting between. In this study, the residual gases of an integral steel factory were evaluated and modeled with the goal of developing an optimization problem considering two opposing objectives: CO2 emissions and profit. The problem was first approached in a mono-objective manner, optimizing profit through Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), and then was extended to a bi-objective problem solved by means of the ε-constraint method, to find the Pareto front relating profit and CO2 emissions. The results show that multiobjective optimization is a very valuable resource for... [more]

Keywords: bio-energy generators, demand response, hybrid microgrids, integrated resource planning, optimization techniques, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, virtual inertia
This work is the earliest attempt to propose an integrated resource planning for distributed hybrid microgrids considering virtual-inertia support (VIS) and demand-response support (DRS) systems. Initially, three-distributed sustainable energy-based unequal hybrid microgrids are envisioned with the availability of solar/wind/bioenergy resources. In order to overcome the effects of intermittency in renewable resources and low inertia, each microgrid is incorporated with DRS and VIS units for demand- and supply-side management, respectively. The proposed system is simulated in MATLAB considering real-time recorded solar/wind data with realistic loading for 12 months. A novel quasi-oppositional chaotic selfish-herd optimization (QCSHO) algorithm is proposed by hybridizing quasi-opposition-based learning and chaotic linear search techniques into the selfish-herd optimization, for optimal regulation of voltage and frequency in microgrids. Then, the system responses are compared with 7 algor... [more]

Keywords: foreign direct investment (FDI), gas sector, gross domestic product (GDP), SWOT analysis
Turkmenistan is currently one of the key suppliers in the global natural gas market, and it is important to examine its competitive position in the world. The aim of this article is to forecast the development strategy of its gas sector. To achieve this aim, the authors first examined: (1) Turkmenistan’s position in the global gas market and the structure of its oil and gas sector; (2) the share of gas in Turkmenistan’s exports. They then conducted an analysis of the causal relationship between FDI and GDP. The above research made it possible to conduct a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Based on the SWOT analysis, three sector development scenarios were developed: pessimistic, realistic, and optimistic. On their basis, the gas sector in Turkmenistan can build strategies for its development, considering the impact of market and non-market factors.
A Short-Term Residential Load Forecasting Model Based on LSTM Recurrent Neural Network Considering Weather Features

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: meteorological data, recurrent neural network, residential load forecasting, short-term load forecasting
With economic growth, the demand for power systems is increasingly large. Short-term load forecasting (STLF) becomes an indispensable factor to enhance the application of a smart grid (SG). Other than forecasting aggregated residential loads in a large scale, it is still an urgent problem to improve the accuracy of power load forecasting for individual energy users due to high volatility and uncertainty. However, as an important variable that affects the power consumption pattern, the influence of weather factors on residential load prediction is rarely studied. In this paper, we review the related research of power load forecasting and introduce a short-term residential load forecasting model based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network with weather features as an input.

Keywords: data-driven predicted interval, energy systems integration, interval optimization, multi-energy system, PV forecast, PV uncertainty
Recently, multi-energy systems (MESs), whereby different energy carriers are coupled together, have become popular. For a more efficient use of MESs, the optimal operation of these systems needs to be considered. This paper focuses on the day-ahead optimal schedule of an MES, including a combined heat and electricity (CHP) unit, a gas boiler, a PV system, and energy storage devices. Starting from a day-ahead PV point forecast, a non-parametric probabilistic forecast method is proposed to build the predicted interval and represent the uncertainty of PV generation. Afterwards, the MES is modeled as mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), and the scheduling problem is solved by interval optimization. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a case study is performed on a real industrial MES. The simulation results show that, by using only historical PV measurement data, the point forecaster reaches a normalized root-mean square error (NRMSE) of 14.24%, and the calibration... [more]
