Technical, Economic, Social and Regulatory Feasibility Evaluation of Dynamic Distribution Tariff Designs
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dynamic distribution tariff, feasibility evaluation, participation cost, regulatory readiness, scoping review, technology readiness, user convenience level
The increasing number of distributed energy resources in the distribution grids creates the risk of grid congestion and the high cost of grid expansion. The implementation of the dynamic distribution grid tariffs can potentially avoid grid congestion. Meanwhile, the design and implementation of any distribution tariff need to consider and match the regional/national requirements. However, there is no sufficient evaluation method available to review and evaluate the feasibility of the dynamic distribution tariffs. Therefore, this paper introduces a feasibility evaluation method with four dimensions of technical, economic, social, and regulatory to review dynamic distribution tariffs. The literature on dynamic distribution tariffs is collected, and 29 dynamic distribution tariffs are selected and further categorized into five attributes of rationale, cost drivers, dynamics, events, and active demand. The evaluation results show that the time-of-use tariff is the most feasible dynamic dis... [more]

Numerical Investigation on Shape Optimization of Small-Spacing Twin-Well for Salt Cavern Gas Storage in Ultra-Deep Formation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: salt cavern, shape optimization, small-spacing twin-well, underground gas storage
Small-spacing twin-well (SSTW) salt caverns have an extensive application prospect in thin or bedded rock salt formations due to their good performance, while they are rarely used in ultra-deep formations. The target strata depth of Pingdingshan salt mine is over 1700 m, and it is planned to apply an SSTW cavern to construct the underground gas storage (UGS). A 3D geomechanical model considering the viscoelastic plasticity of the rock mass is introduced into Flac3D to numerically study the influence of internal gas pressure, cavern upper shape and well spacing on the stability of an SSTW salt cavern for Pingdingshan UGS. A set of assessment indices is summarized for the stability of gas storage. The results show that the minimum internal gas pressure is no less than 14 MPa, and the cavern should not be operated under constant low gas pressure for a long time. The cavern with an upper height of 70 m is recommended for Pingdingshan gas storage based on the safety evaluation and maximum v... [more]

Long-Run Dynamics of Gas Emissions, Economic Growth, and Low-Carbon Energy in the European Union: The Fostering Effect of FDI and Trade
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic growth, European Union, foreign direct investments, gas emissions, low-carbon energy, trade
The European Union’s environmental goal by 2050 is to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world. This means specific efforts for diversifying the energy mix and investing in low-carbon energy. Our study investigates the nexus among carbon emissions, energy consumption and mix, and economic growth in a modified framework that includes the contribution of inward foreign direct investments and international trade to lowering air pollution. We have used a two-step approach to explore in more detail the links between these variables in 24 EU countries over the period 1995−2018, followed by a panel VECM analysis. Our results indicate that there is a unidirectional link between economic growth and CO2 emissions, which should imply a decoupling of environmental improvement measures from the pace of economic growth. We also find bidirectional causal relationships between low-carbon energy shares in consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as between low-carbon energy share in consum... [more]

Heat Transfer by Natural Convection in a Square Enclosure Containing PCM Suspensions
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat transfer, natural convection, numerical analysis, phase change materials
Research on using phase change material (PCM) suspension to improve the heat transfer and energy storage capabilities of thermal systems is booming; however, there are limited studies on the application of PCM suspension in transient natural convection. In this paper, the implicit finite difference method was used to numerically investigate the transient and steady-state natural convection heat transfer in a square enclosure containing a PCM suspension. The following parameters were included in the simulation: aspect ratio of the physical model = 1, ratio of the buoyancies caused by temperature and concentration gradients = 1, Raleigh number (RaT) = 103−105, Stefan number (Ste) = 0.005−0.1, subcooling factor (Sb) = 0−1.0, and initial mass fraction (or concentration) of PCM particles (ci) = 0−0.1. The results showed that the use of a PCM suspension can effectively enhance heat transfer by natural convection. For example, when RaT = 103, Ste = 0.01, ci = 0.1, and Sb = 1, the steady-state... Risk Assessment of the Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen contamination, risk analysis, underground hydrogen storage
Salt caverns are accepted as an ideal solution for high-pressure hydrogen storage. As well as considering the numerous benefits of the realization of underground hydrogen storage (UHS), such as high energy densities, low leakage rates and big storage volumes, risk analysis of UHS is a required step for assessing the suitability of this technology. In this work, a preliminary quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was performed by starting from the worst-case scenario: rupture at the ground of the riser pipe from the salt cavern to the ground. The influence of hydrogen contamination by bacterial metabolism was studied, considering the composition of the gas contained in the salt caverns as time variable. A bow-tie analysis was used to highlight all the possible causes (basic events) as well as the outcomes (jet fire, unconfined vapor cloud explosion (UVCE), toxic chemical release), and then, consequence and risk analyses were performed. The results showed that a UVCE is the most frequent ou... [more]

Reinforced Demand Side Management for Educational Institution with Incorporation of User’s Comfort
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: enhanced binary gray wolf optimization, institutional loads, load-shifting, reinforced demand-side management, smart grid, user comfort index
Soaring energy demand and the establishment of various trends in the energy market have paved the way for developing demand-side management (DSM) from the consumer side. This paper proposes a reinforced DSM (RDSM) approach that uses an enhanced binary gray wolf optimization algorithm (EBGWO) that benefits the consumer premises with load scheduling, and peak demand reduction. To date, DSM research has been carried out for residential, commercial and industrial loads, whereas DSM approaches for educational loads have been less studied. The institution load also consumes much utility energy during peak hours, making institutional consumers pay a high amount of cost for energy consumption during peak hours. The proposed objective is to reduce the total electricity cost and to improve the operating efficiency of the entire load profile at an educational institution. The proposed architecture integrates the solar PV (SPV) generation that supplies the user-comfort loads during peak operating... [more]

PV Modules Interfacing Isolated Triple Active Bridge for Nanogrid Applications
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control analysis, DC nanogrid, PV module, three port converter, triple active bridge
DC nanogrid architectures with Photovoltaic (PV) modules are expected to grow significantly in the next decades. Therefore, the integration of multi-port power converters and high-frequency isolation links are of increasing interest. The Triple Active Bridge (TAB) topology shows interesting advantages in terms of isolation, Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) over wide load and input voltage ranges and high frequency operation capability. Thus, controlling PV modules is not an easy task due to the complexity and control stability of the system. In fact, the TAB power transfer function has many degrees of freedom, and the relationship between any of two ports is always dependent on the third one. In this paper we analyze the interfacing of photovoltaic arrays to the TAB with different solar conditions. A simple but effective control solution is proposed, which can be implemented through general purpose microcontrollers. The TAB is applied to an islanded DC nanogrid, which can be useful and rea... Machine Learning-Based Classification of Electrical Low Voltage Cable Degradation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cable condition degradation, cable insulation wear, decision tree, k-nearest neighbors, load flow computation, logistic regression, low voltage distribution networks, machine learning approaches, smart meter
Low voltage distribution networks have not been traditionally designed to accommodate the large-scale integration of decentralized photovoltaic (PV) generations. The bidirectional power flows in existing networks resulting from the load demand and PV generation changes as well as the influence of ambient temperature led to voltage variations and increased the leakage current through the cable insulation. In this paper, a machine learning-based framework is implemented for the identification of cable degradation by using data from deployed smart meter (SM) measurements. Nodal voltage variations are supposed to be related to cable conditions (reduction of cable insulation thickness due to insulation wear) and to client net demand changes. Various machine learning techniques are applied for classification of nodal voltages according to the cable insulation conditions. Once trained according to the comprehensive generated datasets, the implemented techniques can classify new network operat... [more]

Using Thermal Energy Storage to Relieve Wind Generation Curtailment in an Island Microgrid
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP), island microgrid, thermal energy storage (TES), wind generation curtailment
The uncertainty and intermittency of the available wind resource in nature would potentially cause wind generation curtailment when the flexibility of the integrated power grid is limited, especially in small-scale microgrids for islands. In this paper, an optimal configuration method is proposed to use thermal energy storage (TES) to relieve wind generation curtailment in an island microgrid. The thermal network is modeled along with the electrical network to utilize its regulation capability, while TES is introduced as an additional flexibility resource. The detailed cost models of combined heat and power (CHP) units and TES are presented to realize the objective of minimizing the overall operating cost. The performance of TES in improving wind power utilization is firstly validated by using an electrical boiler (EB) as a benchmark and further analyzed under different scenarios considering the growths of wind power capacity, electrical load, and heat load. Analysis of the Effects of the Location of Passive Control Devices on the Platform of a Floating Wind Turbine
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating wind turbines, hybrid power systems, structural control, TMD (tuned mass damper), vibration, wind power
Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) are subjected to strong loads, mainly due to wind and waves. These disturbances cause undesirable vibrations that affect the structure of these devices, increasing the fatigue and reducing its energy efficiency. Among others, a possible way to enhance the performance of these wind energy devices installed in deep waters is to combine them with other marine energy systems, which may, in addition, improve its stability. The purpose of this work is to analyze the effects that installing some devices on the platform of a barge-type wind turbine have on the vibrations of the structure. To do so, two passive control devices, TMD (Tuned Mass Damper), have been installed on the platform of the floating device, with different positions and orientations. TMDs are usually installed in the nacelle or in the tower, which imposes space, weight, and size hard constraints. An analysis has been carried out, using the FAST software model of the NREL-5MW FOWT. The r... [more]

Thermo-Economic Analysis on Integrated CO2, Organic Rankine Cycles, and NaClO Plant Using Liquefied Natural Gas
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The thermal energy conversion of natural gas (NG) using appropriate configuration cycles represents one of the best nonrenewable energy resources because of its high heating value and low environmental effects. The natural gas can be converted to liquefied natural gas (LNG), via the liquefaction process, which is used as a heat source and sink in various multigeneration cycles. In this paper, a new configuration cycle is proposed using LNG as a heat source and heat sink. This new proposed cycle includes the CO2 cycle, the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), a heater, a cooler, an NaClO plant, and reverse osmosis. This cycle generates electrical power, heating and cooling energy, potable water (PW), hydrogen, and salt all at the same time. For this purpose, one computer program is provided in an engineering equation solver for energy, exergy, and thermo-economic analyses. Towards Electrothermal Optimization of a HVDC Cable Joint Based on Field Simulation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: field grading, HVDC, joints, multiphysics, nonlinear electrothermal coupling, power cables
Extruded high-voltage direct current cable systems transmit electric power over long distances. Numerical field simulation can provide access to the internal electrothermal behavior of cable joints, which interconnect cable sections. However, coupled nonlinear electrothermal field simulations are still a challenge. In this work, a robust numerical solution approach is implemented and validated. This approach allows for efficient parameter studies of resistively graded high-voltage direct current cable joint designs. It is assessed how the dielectric stress distribution between the conductor connection and the grounded cable sheath is influenced by nonlinear field and temperature dependent electric conductivity of the field grading material. Optimal field grading material parameters, which fulfill the field grading and power loss requirements, are suggested based on the simulation studies.

An Experimental Study on Preparation of Reconstituted Tectonic Coal Samples: Optimization of Preparation Conditions
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: compaction mechanism, effectiveness evaluation, mechanical properties, reconstituted coal, tectonic coal particles
The uniquely soft and fragile nature of tectonic coal makes it difficult to obtain core samples suitable for laboratory experimentation. Preparation of reconstituted tectonic coal (RTC) samples generally adopts the secondary forming method. Reliable coal samples are needed to obtain credible permeability and mechanical parameters that can guide Coalbed Methane (CBM) extraction and improve mining safety. In this study, the compaction mechanism of coal particles is analyzed based on the Kawakita model, and optimal sample preparation conditions are systemically investigated, particularly particle size and particle size distribution, forming pressure, and moisture content. The density and P-wave velocity of coal samples were used to test whether the RTC samples were realistic. Finally, the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of the RTC samples were determined. The results indicate that RTC samples prepared for laboratory testing of mechanical properties require (1) the or... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electromagnetic harvester, MR damper, real-time, self-powered and self-sensing capability, self-sensing function, vibration reduction system
This study investigated the self-sensing mechanism in the electromagnetic vibration-based energy harvester (EV-EH) prototype specially engineered for a commercial magnetorheological (MR) damper. The objective of the work is to demonstrate that the EV-EH unit with a specific self-powered feature can also be employed as a relative velocity sensor in the system. To do this, the self-sensing action of the unit was experimentally studied over the assumed range of working conditions. The analysis of the test results and the determined self-sensing function indicated that the EV-EH has a highly accurate monitoring capability. The EV-EH self-sensing and self-powered features confirm the potentials and applicability of the unit for MR damper control in a vibration reduction system with energy regeneration.

Broadband Circuit-Oriented Electromagnetic Modeling for Power Electronics: 3-D PEEC Solver vs. RLCG-Solver
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fast switching power semiconductor devices, finite element method, partial element equivalent circuit, quasi-static electromagnetic modeling
Broadband electromagnetic (EM) modeling increases in importance for virtual prototyping of advanced power electronics systems (PES), enabling a more accurate prediction of fast switching converter operation and its impact on energy conversion efficiency and EM interference. With the aim to predict and reduce an adverse impact of parasitics on the dynamic performance of fast switching power semiconductor devices, the circuit-oriented EM modeling based on the extraction of equivalent lumped R-L-C-G circuits is frequently selected over the Finite Element Method (FEM)-based EM modeling, mainly due to its lower computational complexity. With requirements for more accurate virtual prototyping of fast-switching PES, the modeling accuracy of the equivalent-RLCG-circuit-based EM modeling has to be re-evaluated. In the literature, the equivalent-RLCG-circuit-based EM techniques are frequently misinterpreted as the quasi-static (QS) 3-D Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method, and the ob... [more]

Impedance Reshaping Control Strategy for Improving Resonance Suppression Performance of a Series-Compensated Grid-Connected System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: impedance reshaping, inverter, resonance suppression, series compensation
In the series-compensated grid-connected system (SCGCS), there is an impedance interaction between the inverter impedance and the grid impedance that is prone to cause resonance in the SCGCS. In this paper, firstly, considering the effects of the phase-locked loop (PLL), current-loop, and frequency coupling, the broadband impedance model of the SCGCS is established. The stability of the SCGCS is analyzed by the impedance-based Nyquist stability criterion. It is found from the stability analysis that the impedance interaction between the inverter impedance and the grid impedance is the leading cause of the resonance. An impedance reshaping based resonance suppression method is proposed to suppress the resonance. The phase characteristics of the inverter equivalent output impedance are reshaped from the perspective of impedance. The phase margin at the intersection frequency of the inverter impedance and the grid impedance is improved. The proposed resonance suppression approach mainly c... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Ag nanowires, carbon support, CO2 reduction, electrocatalysis, Syngas
The development of a selective and efficient catalyst for CO2 electroreduction is a great challenge in CO2 storage and conversion research. Silver metal is an attractive alternative due to its enhanced catalytic performance of CO2 electroreduction to CO. Here, we prepared Ag nanowires anchored on carbon support as an excellent electrocatalyst with remarkably high selectivity for the CO2 reduction to CO. The CO Faradic efficiency was approximately 100%. The enhanced catalytic performances may be ascribed to dense active sites exposed on the Ag nanowires’ high specific surface area, by the uniform dispersion of Ag nanowires on the carbon support. Our research demonstrates that Ag nanowires supported on carbon have potential as promising catalysts in CO2 electroreduction.
