Photovoltaic System with a Battery-Assisted Quasi-Z-Source Inverter: Improved Control System Design Based on a Novel Small-Signal Model
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, maximum power point, photovoltaic source, quasi-Z-source inverter, small-signal model, transfer functions
This paper deals with a photovoltaic (PV) system containing a quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) and batteries connected in parallel with the qZSI’s lower-voltage capacitor. The control system design is based on knowledge of three transfer functions which are obtained from the novel small-signal model of the considered system. The transfer function from the d-axis grid current to the battery current has been identified for the first time in this study for the considered system configuration and has been utilized for the design of the battery current control loop for the grid-tied operation. The transfer function from the duty cycle to the PV source voltage has been utilized for the design of the PV source voltage control loop. The PV source voltage is controlled so as to ensure the desired power production of the PV source. For the maximum power point tracking, a perturb-and-observe algorithm is utilized that does not require the measurement of the PV source current, but it instead utilize... [more]

Influence of Coil Current and Oil Film Thickness on Hopf Bifurcation of MLDSB
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Hopf bifurcation, limit cycle, MLDSB, nonlinear supporting system, phase trajectories, x-t diagram
Magnetic-liquid double-suspension bearing (MLDSB) is composed of an electromagnetic supporting system and a hydrostatic supporting system. Due to its greater supporting capacity and stiffness, it is appropriate for middle-speed applications, overloading, and frequent starting. However, because it contains two sets of systems, its structure and rotor support system are more complex. It contains strong nonlinear links. When the parameters of the system change, the bearing rotor may feature Hopf bifurcation, resulting in system flutter and reducing the operational stability of the magnetic fluid double-suspension bearing rotor, which has become one of the key problems restricting its development and application. As key parameters of MLDSB, the coil current and oil film thickness exert a major impact on Hopf bifurcation. Therefore, the mathematical model of MLDSB is established in this paper, and the border and direction of Hopf bifurcation, period, and amplitude of limit cycle are analyze... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: crash safety, electrical aging, internal short circuit, lithium plating, lithium-ion battery, mechanical properties change, quasi-static indentation
Analyzing the impact of electrical aging on the lithium-ion cell’s mechanical behavior and safety is an important factor to assess the crash safety of electric vehicles during their lifetime. In this study, fresh and electrical aged state-of-the-art NCM pouch cells were investigated. Aged cells, which were cycled electrically to 90% state of health, under laboratory conditions in electric vehicle battery modules were used. The used charging/discharging strategy represents real customer behavior based on accelerated driving profiles. First, it is shown that electrical aging has a significant influence on the anodes’ and separators’ mechanical properties, which had a lower mechanical strength and stiffness under tension. Additionally, quasi-static cylindrical indentation and three-point bending tests were performed to investigate aging effects on cell level at varying state of charge (SOC). Aged cells with 0% SOC showed a right-shifted force−displacement curve and a 29% lower maximum for... [more]

Fuzzy Time Series Methods Applied to (In)Direct Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Forecasting
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuzzy time series, photovoltaic energy prediction, short-term forecasting
Solar photovoltaic energy has experienced significant growth in the last decade, as well as the challenges related to the intermittency of power generation inherent to this process. In this paper we propose to perform short-term forecasting of solar PV generation using fuzzy time series (FTS). Two FTS methods are proposed and evaluated to obtain a global horizontal irradiance (GHI) value. The first is the weighted method and the second is the fuzzy information granular method. Using the direct proportionality of the power with the GHI, the spatial smoothing process was applied, obtaining spatial irradiance on which a first-order low pass filter was applied to simulated power photovoltaic system generation. Thus, this study proposed indirect and direct forecasting of solar photovoltaic generation which was statistically evaluated and the results showed that the indirect prediction showed better performance with GHI than the power simulation. Error statistics, such as RMSE and MBE, show... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
In this paper, a gas-to-power (GtoP) system for power outages is digitally modeled and experimentally developed. The design includes a solid-state hydrogen storage system composed of TiFeMn as a hydride forming alloy (6.7 kg of alloy in five tanks) and an air-cooled fuel cell (maximum power: 1.6 kW). The hydrogen storage system is charged under room temperature and 40 bar of hydrogen pressure, reaching about 110 g of hydrogen capacity. In an emergency use case of the system, hydrogen is supplied to the fuel cell, and the waste heat coming from the exhaust air of the fuel cell is used for the endothermic dehydrogenation reaction of the metal hydride. This GtoP system demonstrates fast, stable, and reliable responses, providing from 149 W to 596 W under different constant as well as dynamic conditions. A comprehensive and novel simulation approach based on a network model is also applied. The developed model is validated under static and dynamic power load scenarios, demonstrating excell... [more]

Energy Analysis of an Industrial Nozzle with Variable Outlet Conditions during Compressible and Transient Airflow
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pneumatic pulsator, transient compressible flow
The nozzle which is applied in industrial pneumatic pulsators is studied. It is a part of the system for unclogging the drains and outlets of silos and hoppers for loose materials. The nozzle is required to achieve the lowest level of energy losses while directing the airflow, which impacts the loose material bed. The energy rate transferred into the bed depends on the temperature and pressure differences between the inlet and outlet of the nozzle. In this study, the available energy is determined assuming compressible and transient airflow through the nozzle, which is a part of the industrial pneumatic pulsator. Numerical simulations are performed using the OpenFOAM CFD toolbox. Energy analysis is carried out by using Reynolds Transport Theorem for specific energy for the variable temperature inside the silo on the basis of CFD results. In fact, the air parameters at the outlet of the nozzle are the ones inside the silo. The study showed that the design of the nozzle is not very suffi... [more]

Effect of Temperature on Densification Pressure and the Unit Density in Production of Corn Straw Pellet with a Post-Heating Method
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, corn straw, densification, densification pressure
In the biomass densification process, a lot of energy is needed to prevent its spring-back and to overcome the friction between the material and the channel surface of the die so as to build up pressure. However, moisture, particle size, temperature, and type of material all influence the densification pressure, pellet quality, and the density. The research was aimed to find out how the densification pressure and density were affected by the die temperature based on an open-end densification method using a self-developed pellet extruder. When the piston fixed in the front of the extruder moved in a reciprocating way, the raw material was pressed into the opening die, which had a heater wrapped up. Crushed corn straw with a particle size under 4 mm and with a given moisture content of 10% was used to be compacted by the extruder. The results showed that with the increase of the die temperature, the value of densification pressure decreased; however, the quality of pellets was not good a... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, efficiency, gears, lubrication, mesh handling, multi-stage gearboxes, partitioning methods, remeshing strategies
The application of Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools in mechanical design has consistently increased over the last decades. The benefits introduced by virtual models in terms of time and cost reductions are the main drivers for their exploitation in industry as well as for research purposes in academia. March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: diesel fuel consumption, factors of cluster analysis, identification method, predicted fuel consumption, self-propelled rolling stock functioning modes, simulation accuracy, special self-propelled rolling stock
A method of indirect rationing of diesel fuel for special self-propelled rolling stock is presented, based on the identification of actual fuel consumption and controlled operating modes. Based on the results of test trips using automated accounting systems for operating modes and fuel consumption, the method allows us to assess reasonable volumes of fuel consumption in a specific section of the railway infrastructure. We show how the methods of identifying actual fuel consumption and operating modes can establish consumption rates of special self-propelled rolling stock without the use of automated fuel metering. The identification method is based on solving a multifactorial equation, the coefficients of which are determined in a program with statistical functions. To eliminate multicollinearity problems, the use of cluster analysis methods is proposed. Simulation Study of Solidification in the Shell-And-Tube Energy Storage System with a Novel Dual-PCM Configuration
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dual-PCM, Energy Storage, heat exchanger, numerical, phase change material, solidification
This study proposes a novel dual-PCM configuration with outstanding solidification response in a horizontal shell-and-tube energy storage system. To demonstrate that the proposed PCM configuration is superior in its thermal responses, results from a range of numerical simulations are presented and compared between different configurations of dual-PCM. As the melting/solidus point is a crucial factor for the solidification rate, dual PCMs are chosen such that the average of their melting point is equal to the melting point of the single-PCM in the reference case. Additionally, equal-area sectors are considered for all cases to ensure the same quantities of PCMs are compared. The temporal liquid fraction and temperature contours reveal that solidification is delayed in the upper half of the system due to strong natural convection motions. Therefore, a dual-PCM configuration is offered to improve the solidification rate in this region and accelerate the full solidification process. Result... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: broadband seismometer, low-frequency vibrations, railway subgrade stability, seismic equipment, Simulation, soil testing
Changes in the elastic characteristics of the railway subgrade have been determined using nonstop long-term (more than 50 days) train passage seismic observations. We examined the records of the broadband sensitive seismometer TC-120s in the low-frequency band (below 0.1 Hz) to obtain the subgrade response to various train passages and its relaxation after unloading. Analytical models of subgrade deformation by the train are proposed. When comparing models in the experiment, we showed that a lowpass filter (below 0.1 Hz) provides waveforms with parameters determined by the deformation properties of the soil. We carried out statistical processing of 1600 train seismic records and determined parameters characterizing the subgrade reaction to the vibration effects created by trains in the ultra-low-frequency range. Therefore, we can use these parameters to monitor after daily averaging and weekly smoothing. When observing the spring thawing of the soil, we considered the sensitivity of se... [more]

Keywords: active thermography, air-coupled ultrasound, glass solder, nondestructive testing, solid oxide fuel cell, stack element, X-ray microradiography
Single planar fuel cell elements consisting of metallic interconnectors that are bonded and sealed by a thin glass solder layer form the core of a solid oxide fuel cell. For reliable operation, the bonding layer has to adhere well and must be without voids or foreign material inclusions, which might cause gas leakage, electrical shorts or mechanical weakening and structural failure. Nondestructive testing (NDT) by the high-frequency ultrasound in immersion technique and by air-coupled ultrasound was optimized to find such defects. Another technique was flash light excited thermography for detection of voids. The NDT techniques used are complementary to each other, as they are based on different physical principles. Voids and small steel platelets of different sizes were prepared in the glass solder layer before the high-temperature bonding process and then monitored by the NDT techniques through the interconnector plates.
