A Redesign Methodology to Improve the Performance of a Thermal Energy Storage with Phase Change Materials: A Numerical Approach
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: numerical simulations, performance, phase change materials, redesign methodology, sensitivity analysis, solar water heater, thermal energy storage
In recent years, phase change materials (PCMs) have been presented as a suitable alternative for thermal energy storage (TES) systems for solar water heater (SWH) applications. However, PCMs’ low thermal conductivity and the high dependence on external conditions are the main challenges during the design of TES systems with PCMs. Design actions to improve the performance of the TES systems are crucial to achieve the necessary stored/released thermal energy and guarantee the all-day operation of SWHs under specific system requirements. In this study, a TES with PCM in the configuration of a heat exchanger was redesigned, focused on achieving two main targets: an outlet water temperature over 43 °C during discharging time (15 h) and efficiency over 60% to supply the hot water demand of two families (400 L). A four-step redesign methodology was proposed and implemented through numerical simulations to address this aim. It was concluded that the type, encapsulation shape, and amount of PCM... [more]

Novel Nonylphenol Polyethoxylated Based Surfactants for Enhanced Oil Recovery for High-Mineralization Carbonate Reservoir
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, EOR, high-salinity, surfactant-flooding, surfactants
Surfactant flooding can mobilize trapped oil and change the wettability of the rock to be more hydrophilic, which increases the oil recovery factor. However, the selection of surfactants is difficult in the case of high salinity conditions. In this work, we synthesized three novel anionic-nonionic surfactants based on widely used nonionic surfactant nonylphenol polyethoxylated (NPEO) and evaluated their efficiencies for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in high salinity water (20% NaCl). The modified surfactants showed a decrease in interfacial tension (IFT) up to 10 times compared with the nonionic precursor. All surfactants had changed the wettability of rock to be more hydrophilic according to contact angle measurements. The effectiveness of surfactants was proved by spontaneous imbibition experiments, in which the synthesized surfactants showed a better displacement efficiency and increased oil production by 1.5−2 times. Filtration experiments showed an increase in oil recovery factor by... [more]

A Shallow Neural Network Approach for the Short-Term Forecast of Hourly Energy Consumption
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: 24 h ahead energy forecast, ARIMA, Artificial Neural Networks, long short-term memory networks, Machine Learning, support vector machines
The forecasts of electricity and heating demands are key inputs for the efficient design and operation of energy systems serving urban districts, buildings, and households. Their accuracy may have a considerable effect on the selection of the optimization approach and on the solution quality. In this work, we describe a supervised learning approach based on shallow Artificial Neural Networks to develop an accurate model for predicting the daily hourly energy consumption of an energy district 24 h ahead. Predictive models are generated for each one of the two considered energy types, namely electricity and heating. Single-layer feedforward neural networks are trained with the efficient and robust decomposition algorithm DEC proposed by Grippo et al. on a data set of historical data, including, among others, carefully selected information related to the hourly energy consumption of the energy district and the hourly weather data of the region where the district is located. Sizing the Thermal Energy Storage Device Utilizing Phase Change Material (PCM) for Low-Temperature Organic Rankine Cycle Systems Employing Selected Hydrocarbons
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat exchanger, sizing method, TES-EVA, TES-LH, thermodynamic analysis
Thermal energy storage (TES) looks to be a promising technology for recovering waste heat or other intermittent heat sources, especially if it is coupled with the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system. This system may use a variety of heat storage materials, including solids, liquids, and phase change materials (PCM). This article discusses the use of PCM as a thermal energy storage material in TES systems coupled with ORC systems. Other TES configurations may be used in ORC; however, in this article, the TES is solely used in heat exchangers, i.e., evaporator and liquid heater. The goal of this research is to establish a dimensionless storage mass parameter for sizing TES-evaporator (TES-EVA) or TES-liquid heater (TES-LH) devices for ORCs. Furthermore, the model of this system was created in the MATLAB environment using the chosen hydrocarbons as ORC working fluids. The obtained modelling results provide a novel point of view that scientists and engineers may employ while developing the... [more]

Bidding Strategy for VPP and Economic Feasibility Study of the Optimal Sizing of Storage Systems to Face the Uncertainty of Solar Generation Modelled with IGDT
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy storage system sizing, IGDT, return on investment, storage systems, virtual power plant
Virtual power plants (VPP) emerge as a new participant that, in order to maximise their visibility and income, represents a group of distributed energy resources (DER) in the electricity market. However, this DER aggregation brings challenges, such as fluctuating renewable sources dependent on weather variables and guaranteeing power set points. One way to deal with these intermittencies is to incorporate the energy storage system (ESS) into the VPPs. Therefore, this paper presents a novel bidding strategy of VPP that includes modelling the uncertainty associated with solar generation using information gap decision theory (IGDT) and the optimal sizing of ESS systems so as to deal with solar generation fluctuations. Additionally, a study is carried out to determine the economic viability of this methodology in the short, medium and long terms using the return on investment (ROI).

Effect of MXene Loaded on g-C3N4 Photocatalyst for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: degradation, graphitic carbon nitride, methylene blue, MXene, Wastewater
Photocatalytic degradation is one of the environmentally friendly methods used in treating dye wastewater. In this study, a series of MXene/g-C3N4 heterostructure photocatalysts with different loading amounts of MXene (1, 4, 8, and 12 wt.%) were successfully synthesized via the wet impregnation method and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated via the degradation of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation. As such, the 1 wt.% MXene/g-C3N4 heterostructure photocatalyst achieved a high degradation of methylene blue compared to the pure g-C3N4 under visible-light illumination of 180 min. This significant improvement was attributed to the intimate interfacial contact, evidently from the FESEM analysis, which allows the smooth photocharge carriers to transport between g-C3N4 and MXene. Additionally, the larger BET surface area demonstrated by the 1 wt.% MXene/g-C3N4 heterostructure allowed this sample to have higher adsorption of dye molecules and provided a higher number of rea... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: critical pillar width, cutting height, mining influence, roof cutting and pressure relief
The application of roof-cutting and pressure-relief gob-side entry retention plays a critical role in controlling the stability of the surrounding rock at the entry, easing continuity tension and improving resource recovery ratio. The excavation of the 360,803 airway in Xinji No. 1 Mine is affected by intense mining of the 360,805 working face. Hence, to address the stability problem of surrounding rock in the 360,803 airway, rock mass blast weakening theory was used in this study to analyze the blasting stress of columnar charged rock mass and obtain the radiuses of crushed, fractured, and vibration zones under uncoupled charging conditions. The reasonable array pitch, length, and dip angle of boreholes were determined according to the pressure-relief range of the blasting fracture. The migration laws of roof strata were explored based on a mechanical model of overlying roof strata structure on the working face. Thermal Analysis and Kinetic Modeling of Pyrolysis and Oxidation of Hydrochars
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen Plus, Biomass, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, kinetics, Modelling, thermal analysis
This study examines the kinetics of pyrolysis and oxidation of hydrochars through thermal analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to investigate the decomposition profiles and develop two distributed activation energy models (DAEM) of hydrochars derived from the hydrothermal carbonization of grape seeds produced at different temperatures (180, 220, and 250 °C). Data were collected at 1, 3, and 10 °C/min between 30 and 700 °C. TGA data highlighted a decomposition profile similar to that of the raw biomass for hydrochars obtained at 180 and 220 °C (with a clear distinction between oil, cellulosic, hemicellulosic, and lignin-like compounds), while presenting a more stable profile for the 250 °C hydrochar. DSC showed a certain exothermic behavior during pyrolysis of hydrochars, an aspect also investigated through thermodynamic simulations in Aspen Plus. Regarding the DAEM, according to a Gaussian model, the severity of the... [more]

Measurement Analysis and Improvement of Vibroacoustic Characteristics of Amorphous Alloy Transformer
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: amorphous alloy distribution transformer, measurement, multi-physical field coupling, vibration and noise control, vibroacoustic characteristic
The amorphous alloy transformer has a smaller coercive force and lower specific iron loss. It precedes the conventional silicon steel sheet transformer from the perspective of energy conservation. However, amorphous alloy material has a more significant magnetostriction coefficient, resulting in stronger vibration and acoustic noise. This paper investigates the measurement, analysis, and improvement of vibroacoustic characteristics of one three-phase, four-frame amorphous alloy distribution transformer to reduce environment noise pollution. This study adopts a coupling analysis method of magnetic−force−acoustic multi-physical fields to analyze the vibroacoustic characteristics. It then introduces a novel combination method of magnetic field analysis and an electric circuit to improve the efficiency of magnetic field analysis. This new combination method can greatly reduce the solution time of multiple physical fields through comparison with the traditional field-circuit coupling method... [more]

Industrialization and CO2 Emissions in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Mitigating Role of Renewable Electricity
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, industry, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sub-Saharan Africa
This study aims to explore the relationship between industry value added, renewable energy, and CO2 emissions in a sample of 44 Sub-Saharan African countries over the period 2000−2015. This study makes several important contributions to extant research. While existing research was focused on the renewable energy-CO2 emissions nexus, the current study assesses the moderating role of the renewables sector in the industrialization-CO2 emissions relationship. In addition, this study considers whether EKC relationships will hold after accounting for structural transformations (including industrial contributions to GDPs). Moreover, we are revising the existence of the EKC framework for the Sub-Saharan African countries. Using a two-step system GMM estimator, we found that the share of industry in GDP has a significant positive impact on CO2 emissions, while renewable electricity output reduces CO2 emissions. If causal, a one percentage point increase in renewable electricity output reduces c... [more]

Study of the Impact of E-Machine in Hybrid Dual Clutch Transmission Powertrain
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dual clutch transmission, dual mass flywheel, finite element method, hybrid dual clutch transmission, hybrid electric vehicle, rotor dynamics, static deflection
Recent studies show that hybrid powertrains with dual clutch transmission are becoming more common. This is mainly influenced by the fact that they have higher efficiency, allow power-on shifting, and are more compact. However, the electric motor attached to the primary shaft of the transmission might represent some critical issues in statics and dynamics due to additional torque, inertia, and working irregularities. This paper aims to investigate the influence of the electric motor integration in the transmission on the reliability of the overall system. The focus is on the investigation of potential over stresses of the ICE bearings due to the bending of the gearbox primary shaft. To achieve the aim, the static and the rotor dynamic analysis of the inner and outer primary shafts is performed. The numerical analyses show the potential critical issues that can arise from the excessive manufacturing and assembling tolerances, the interaction of the e-machine torque irregularities and in... Modulation of Antioxidant Activity Enhances Photoautotrophic Cell Growth of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in Microbial Electrosynthesis
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: antioxidant, microbial electrosynthesis, Rhodobacter sphaeroides
Global warming is currently accelerating due to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions by industrialization. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) using electroactive autotrophic microorganisms has recently been reported as a method to reduce carbon dioxide, the main culprit of greenhouse gas. However, there are still few cases of application of MES, and the molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. To investigate the growth characteristics in MES, we carried out growth tests according to reducing power sources in Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The growth rate was significantly lower when electrons were directly supplied to cells, compared to when hydrogen was supplied. Through a transcriptome analysis, we found that the expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related genes was meaningfully higher in MES than in normal photoautotrophic conditions. Similarly, endogenous contents of H2O2 were higher and peroxidase activities were lower in MES. The exogenous application of ascorbic acid, a repr... [more]

Forest Bio-Hubs to Enhance Forest Health While Supporting the Emerging Bioeconomy—A Comparison between Three U.S. Regions
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bio-hub, biomass supply chain, biorefinery, forest depot, log sort yard, wood yard
The emerging bioeconomy requires new supply chain paradigms for biomass materials to reach processing centers. Forest bio-hubs can be thought of as networks of collection points to facilitate biomass supply chains that feed from forest to central processing facilities. The design and functionality of forest bio-hubs depends on the form (e.g., vertically and horizontally integrated), and the quality and volume of feedstocks. In this paper we conceptually develop the potential role of forest bio-hubs. We then compare current bio-hub development in three U.S. regions—the Pacific Northwest, the southwest region, and the southeastern U.S. We use a “SWOT” framework to compare strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each region. We consider transportation distances, topography, proximity to markets, harvesting methods, and wood products development. Innovation and adaptability would play key roles in forest bio-hub development, especially with dynamic conditions related to marke... [more]

Molecular Simulation of Adsorption in Deep Marine Shale Gas Reservoirs
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Adsorption, deep marine, effect of pore size, high temperature and high pressure, molecular simulation, shale gas reservoir
Deep marine shale gas reservoirs are extremely rich in the Sichuan basin in China. However, due to the in situ conditions with high temperature and high pressure (HTHP), in particular reservoir pressure being usually much higher than the test pressure, it is difficult to accurately clarify the adsorption behavior, as seepage theory plays an important role in shale gas reserves evaluation. Therefore, three kinds of sorbent, including illite, quartz and kerogen, and two simulation methods, containing the grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo method and molecular dynamics method, are synthetically used to determine the methane adsorption behavior under HTHP. The results show that both absolute adsorption and excess adsorption decrease with the increase of temperature. When the pressure increases, the absolute adsorption increases quickly and then slowly, and the excess adsorption first increases and then decreases. The superposition of wall potential energy is strongest in a circular hole,... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, barrier Lyapunov functions, motion control, motor-driven servo
The paper refers to one of the most important problems in industrial automation and robotics—effective motion control in the presence of state variable constraints. A new, nonlinear, adaptive, robust, and practically applicable motion controller for a motor-driven servo is proposed. The developed controller guarantees that the transient of the motion is practically finished in a predefined time, and after this moment, the desired motion trajectory is tracked with specified accuracy, inviolable, time-variable constraints imposed on the position and the velocity are preserved, and all these features are robust against disturbances and violations of the system’s parameters. This approach, distinguished by the fact that the settling time and the quasi-steady-state tracking accuracy are explicitly available design parameters, has never been described before.
