Estimating the Employment and Fiscal Consequences of Thermal Coal Phase-Out in China
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: China, climate policy, coal phase-out, employment, just transition, tax revenue
China hosts over half of global coal-fired power generation capacity and has the world’s largest coal reserves. Its 2060 carbon neutrality goal will require coal-fired electricity generation to shrink dramatically, with or without carbon capture and storage technology. Two macroeconomic areas in which the socioeconomic impact of this decline is felt are losses in jobs and tax revenues supported by thermal coal mining, transport and power generation. At the national level, under a ‘baseline’ (B) scenario consistent with China’s carbon neutrality goal, labour productivity growth in coal mining implies that significant job losses will occur nationally in the medium term, even if all coal plants continue operating as planned. Jobs supported by the coal power industry would decline from an estimated 2.7 million in 2021, to 1.44 million in 2035 and 94,000 in 2050, with jobs losses from mining alone expected to exceed 1.1 million by 2035. Tax revenues from thermal coal would total approximate... [more]

The Impact of Green Finance on Urban Haze Pollution in China: A Technological Innovation Perspective
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: enterprise ownership, green finance, haze pollution, technological innovation
Green finance integrates the concept of environmental governance into the financial industry, which is conducive to sustainable development. Applying the mediating effect model, this paper investigates the effect of green finance on urban haze pollution and explores the mediating role of technological innovation of enterprises between them. Based on a sample of 639 enterprises in China over 2016−2019, a significantly negative effect of green finance on urban haze pollution is found. An increase of one standard deviation in green finance decreases PM2.5 concentration by 8.8 μg/m3, ceteris paribus. Further, green finance may improve environmental quality by promoting technological innovation. Considering the heterogeneity of enterprise ownership, this mediating effect exists in non-state-owned enterprises, while it cannot be observed in state-owned enterprises. This study proposes a new solution for pollution: using green financial tools to promote environmentally friendly technological... [more]

A Study on Improving Economy Efficiency of Pumping Stations Based on Tariff Changes
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic efficiency, energy tariff, pumping stations
In this paper, research on improving the economic efficiency of 38 drainage pumping stations was undertaken. Particular attention was paid to the effectiveness of activities without considering any expenditures. Energy costs for this type of machine are usually high, approximately 45% of the total maintenance cost. The main assumption of this work was the selection of appropriate energy tariffs to reduce operating costs. Liquid transport in any economy consumes significant amounts of electricity, estimated at 20−30% of the total electricity production. The optimization of the energy consumption of pumping processes is, therefore, very important. While analyzing the choice of energy tariffs, we designed profitability ratios (PR) specifically for different daily time zones. With the forecasted distribution of energy demands for different daily time zones (usually 2 or 3 zones), it was possible to compare multi-zone tariffs with 24 h tariffs. The profitability of the tariffs was decided b... [more]

Operation Method of Energy Storage System Replacing Governor for Frequency Regulation of Synchronous Generator without Reserve
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy storage system, frequency regulation, primary control, reserve-less operation
This paper proposes an operation methodology for interfacing synchronous generator and energy storage system (ESS) by replacing conventional governor. This research introduces energy management scheme with droop control method for frequency regulation in coordination with synchronous generator. For frequency regulation, generator can take advantage of the ESS instead of the governor, with its relatively fast characteristics, leading to less frequent deviation of synchronous generator. For the verification, we simulate a network reduction model from real Korean network data, based on the case studies using PSCAD/EMTDC software.

An Investigation of the Vibration Modes of an External Gear Pump through Experiments and Numerical Modeling
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bolted joints, external gear pump, hydraulic pump, modal analysis, modal parameter extraction
This paper presents an experimental and numerical modal analysis for an external gear pump considering its mounting on a test rig in a laboratory setting. Most of the previous studies on experimental modal analysis (EMA) of hydraulic pumps focused on the modal frequencies to allow model validation. However, the mode shapes of pump bodies have not extensively been discussed. Furthermore, the nature of the pump components assembly and mounting poses some modeling challenges, such as the uncertain material properties of each component, the behavior of the bolted joints, and some critical modeling boundary conditions related to pump mounting. In this regard, the experimentally obtained vibration modes of a reference pump using the least-square complex exponential (LSCE) method are analyzed with an emphasis on the characteristics of the mode shapes. Then, simple modeling strategies are proposed and validated by performing the analysis from the component level to the full assembly. As a resu... [more]

Identification of Key Nodes in a Power Grid Based on Modified PageRank Algorithm
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: complex network, empirical verification, modified PageRank algorithm, node betweenness, transmission efficiency
For avoiding the occurrence of large-scale blackouts due to disconnected nodes in the power grid, a modified PageRank algorithm is proposed to identify key nodes by integrating the topological information and node type. The node betweenness index is first introduced based on complex network theory, which is modified to reflect the node topological information in the power grid. Then, according to the characteristics of different node types in the power grid, a modified PageRank algorithm is proposed to rapidly identify key nodes, which takes the generator nodes, load nodes, and contact nodes into account. IEEE 39-Bus system and IEEE 118-Bus system are used for the simulations. Simulation results showed that the network transmission efficiencies of the power grid are reduced from 64.23% to 5.62% and from 45.4% to 5.12% in the two simulation systems compared with other methods. The proposed identification algorithm improved the accuracy, and a provincial power grid simulation system in C... [more]

Modeling of the Off-Grid PV-Wind-Battery System Regarding Value of Loss of Load Probability
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The paper presents an optimized off-grid photovoltaic (PV)-wind battery model that considers the value of loss of load probability (LOLP). The optimum combination of all model components: wind turbines, PV panels, batteries and electrical load for the City of Osijek using MATLAB software is defined. The examined data are based on measured load values for the residential home. For values of LOLP in the range from 0.00 to 0.10 in steps of 0.01, optimal size of the presented system has been determined. In order to determine the optimal model, investment costs were taken into account in comparison with various LOLP values.

Performance Assessment of a nZEB Carbon Neutral Living/Office Space and Its Integration into a District Energy-Hub
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BIPV, building simulation, energy data, energy hub, nZEB, solar architecture
The integrated performance assessment of buildings can orient their design in the early stages. Despite the wide availability of physics simulation-based, data-driven, and hybrid techniques, it is often difficult to rely on a single, appropriate technique to obtain reliable results. A set of methods, each featuring advantages and limitations, help to refine the performance assessment in an iterative comparative process until a comprehensive picture of the building is achieved. The approach was implemented on a nearly zero-energy building, recently built-up as a combined living and office space (e.g., the SolAce unit) on the NEST infrastructure in Dübendorf (Switzerland). The proposed approach showed that the unit reaches high energy performance accordingly requiring optimal cooling management, involving the control of the opening of blinds and windows. A sound convergence between the computer simulations and data-driven analysis were observed, attesting to the overall energy consumptio... [more]

Constant Phase Element in the Time Domain: The Problem of Initialization
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constant phase element (CPE), fractional calculus, initial conditions, supercapacitor and battery modeling, time domain, ZARC
The constant phase element (CPE) is found in most battery and supercapacitor equivalent circuit models proposed to interpret data in the frequency domain. When these models are used in the time domain, the initial conditions in the fractional differential equations must be correctly imposed. The initial state problem remains controversial and has been analyzed by various authors in the last two decades. This article attempts to clarify this problem by proposing a procedure to prepare the initial state and defining a decay function that reveals the effect of the initial state in several illustrative examples. This decay function depends on the previous history, which is reflected in the time needed to prepare the initial state and on the current profile assumed for this purpose. This effect of the initial state is difficult to separate and can lead to the misinterpretation of the CPE parameter values.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: commercial load, Demand Side Management (DSM), industrial load, Micro Grid (MG), residential load, Wingsuit Flying Search Algorithm
Demand Side Management (DSM) is an effective tool for utilities through reducing the demand of peak load and controlling the utilization of the energy of the system. The implementation of DSM provides benefits for utilities and is profitable for the customers who are involved in this process. DSM based on a load shifting strategy is proposed in this paper by employing various devices to minimize the energy consumption pattern in the system. The proposed hybrid strategy is the joint implementation of the Wingsuit Flying Search Algorithm (WFSA) and Artificial Cell Swarm Optimization (ACSO). The searching behavior of WFSA is enhanced by ACSO. Hence, it is named the WFS2ACSO technique. The implementation of this load shifting technique was carried out on three different types of loads, these being residential loads, commercial loads, and industrial loads. Two case studies, over summer and winter, were validated to check the feasibility of the test system. The proposed method aimed to achie... [more]

Operational Resilience of Nuclear-Renewable Integrated-Energy Microgrids
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cogeneration, distributed energy resources, flexible operation, frequency control, integrated-energy systems, load following, operational resilience, small modular reactors
The increasing prevalence and severity of wildfires, severe storms, and cyberattacks is driving the introduction of numerous microgrids to improve resilience locally. While distributed energy resources (DERs), such as small-scale wind and solar photovoltaics with storage, will be major components in future microgrids, today, the majority of microgrids are backed up with fossil-fuel-based generators. Small modular reactors (SMRs) can form synergistic mix with DERs due to their ability to provide baseload and flexible power. The heat produced by SMRs can also fulfill the heating needs of microgrid consumers. This paper discusses an operational scheme based on distributed control of flexible power assets to strengthen the operational resilience of SMR-DER integrated-energy microgrids. A framework is developed to assess the operational resilience of SMR-DER microgrids in terms of system adaptive real-power capacity quantified as a response area metric (RAM). Amplitude Control of Stall-Induced Nonlinear Aeroelastic System Based on Iterative Learning Control and Unified Pitch Motion
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: iterative learning, PID controller, pitch motion, stall-induced nonlinear vibration, trajectory tracking, vibration control
In this study, vibration control, a behavior which subordinates to stall-induced nonlinear vibration and amplitude control of a wind turbine’s blade section, based on unified pitch motion driven by slider-linkage mechanism, is investigated by using an iterative learning control (ILC) method. The nonlinear dynamical system is a nonlinear aeroelastic system. The aeroelastic system equations consist of three parts: the nonlinear structural equations derived by using Lagrange’s equations, the improved stall-induced nonlinear ONERA (ISNO) aerodynamic equations, and the pitch control equation. The ISNO model is not only suitable for the actual external pitch motion, but also suitable for the solution by using an ILC algorithm due to its fitted nonlinear aerodynamic coefficients. The ILC algorithm used here is an improved iterative learning algorithm (IILC) which considers the large-range, linearized, residual terms, and realizes gain adaptive tuning based on PID controller. Large Eddy Simulations of a Low-Swirl Gaseous Partially Premixed Lifted Flame in Presence of Wall Heat Losses
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion modeling, Flamelet-Generated Manifold, heat loss, Large Eddy Simulation, lifted flames, partially premixed combustion, stretch, Thickened Flame
The use of lifted flames presents some very promising advantages in terms of pollutant emissions and flame stability. The focus here is on a specific low-swirl injection system operated with methane and derived from an air-blast atomizer for aero-engine applications, which is responsible for flame lift-off. The key feature of this concept is the interaction between the swirling jet and the confinement walls, leading to a strong outer recirculation zone and thus to an upstream transport of combustion products from the main reaction region to the flame base. Here, the representation of the physics involved is challenging, since finite-rate effects govern the lift-off occurrence, and only a few numerical studies have been carried out on this test case so far. The aim of the present work is therefore to understand the limits of some state-of-the-art combustion models within the context of LES. Considering this context, two different strategies are adopted: the Flamelet-Generated Manifold (... [more]

Heat Loss Reduction Approach in Cavity Receiver Design Based on Performance Investigation of a Novel Positive Conical Scheme
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: comprehensive numerical investigation, experimental validation, heat loss reduction, positive conical cavity receiver
The cavity receiver’s thermal conversion performance is critical for parabolic dish and tower Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems. Distinct from precedent research aiming to increase the receiver’s absorption through cavity geometry optimization, the objective of this work was to investigate the thermal conversion performance of a novel, positive conical cavity receiver design, following the heat loss reduction approach with simplified pipe forming, to stress the effectiveness of this approach in cavity receiver design, and to provide data for future optimization of the proposed design. To accomplish these goals, the novel receiver and existing designs’ heat flux absorption and heat loss are compared numerically. The resulting conversion power is also experimentally validated. The concept is inspired by analysis of formulas, suggesting the novel design may realize a thermal conversion improvement of 8.6%, at 650 K, and increases with the rise in temperature. SIMO DC-DC Converter with Low-Complexity Hybrid Comparator-Charge Control
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: charge control, cross regulation, ordered power-distributive control, single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) converter
A hybrid control method using a comparator and a charge control method is proposed for a single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) DC-DC converter. SIMO DC-DC converters have the weaknesses relating to cross-regulation, as all the output channels share the energy stored in a single inductor. Although multiple control methods such as Time-Multiplexing Control (TMC) and Ordered Power Distributing Control (OPDC) have been proposed to prevent cross-regulation or to improve load capability, effective use of limited resources appears to have not yet been achieved. This paper introduces a hybrid control topology that (1) utilizes comparator-based regulations for most outputs and (2) uses a new charge control loop method for the last output to reduce cross-regulation with low hardware complexity. In addition, the proposed scheme efficiently reuses the system’s redundant energy by adaptively controlling the freewheeling switch that opens the path to the input battery to store the surplus energy re... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: capacitor current feedback, carrier frequency, hybrid analog-digital control, Modelling, PID control, PWM types, resonant controllers, Simulation, THD performance evaluation, UPS inverter
The concept of hybrid control has been introduced, in which the analog implementation of the control algorithm is combined with a digital algorithm for determining the PWM duty cycle. Single-loop PD and PID control systems are compared to a double-loop architecture with additional capacitor current sensing for both digital and hybrid controller realizations. The performance is measured as the THD value under resistor-capacitor rectifier load. It has been shown that a properly constructed continuous-time model of a digital controller with a PWM power converter behaves like the actual discrete-time system, which allows for a simple controller analysis and design. The role of a PWM type for capacitor current feedback is emphasized. The simulation models of a real inverter are presented, which are used to tune the controllers and to evaluate the control performance for both rectifier and abruptly changing resistive load. Machine Learning Approach for Maximizing Thermoelectric Properties of BiCuSeO and Discovering New Doping Element
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: BiCuSeO, Machine Learning, thermoelectric materials, thermoelectric properties
Machine learning (ML) has increasingly received interest as a new approach to accelerating development in materials science. It has been applied to thermoelectric materials research for discovering new materials and designing experiments. Generally, the amount of data in thermoelectric materials research, especially experimental data, is very small leading to an undesirable ML model. In this work, the ML model for predicting ZT of the doped BiCuSeO was implemented. The method to improve the model was presented step-by-step. This included normalizing the experimental ZT of the doped BiCuSeO with the pristine BiCuSeO, selecting data for the BiCuSeO doped at Bi-site only, and limiting important features for the model construction. The modified model showed significant improvement, with the R2 of 0.93, compared to the original model (R2 of 0.57). The model was validated and used to predict the ZT of the unknown doped BiCuSeO compounds. The predicted result was logically justified based on... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DC circuit breaker, LC divergence oscillation circuit, PSCAD/EMTDC program, superconducting element
We proposed a superconducting DC circuit breaker that can reliably cut off the fault currents in preparation for the DC system. It consists of a superconducting element and a mechanical DC circuit breaker. The mechanical DC circuit breaker is connected in parallel with a mechanical high-speed switch, an LC divergence oscillation circuit, and a surge arrester. This provides stable cutoff operation due to the fault-current-limiting operation of the superconducting element and the artificial current zero point of the mechanical DC circuit breaker. In this paper, the operating principle of the LC divergence oscillation circuit that creates an artificial current zero point was reviewed based on the theory. We used experimental data to model the time constant of the initial fault current, the arc model generated by the mechanical high-speed switch, and the experimental equipment. As a result, the LC divergence oscillation circuit was confirmed in the simulation, and simulation modeling was r... [more]

The Impact of Hydrogen Admixture into Natural Gas on Residential and Commercial Gas Appliances
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: admixture, appliance technology, blend, combustion, decarbonisation, emissions, H2NG, Hydrogen, pollutants, power-to-gas
Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses.
