High Threshold Voltage Normally off Ultra-Thin-Barrier GaN MISHEMT with MOCVD-Regrown Ohmics and Si-Rich LPCVD-SiNx Gate Insulator
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dynamic RON, leakage current, MISHEMT, MOCVD-regrowth, normally off
A high threshold voltage (VTH) normally off GaN MISHEMTs with a uniform threshold voltage distribution (VTH = 4.25 ± 0.1 V at IDS = 1 μA/mm) were demonstrated by the selective area ohmic regrowth technique together with an Si-rich LPCVD-SiNx gate insulator. In the conventional GaN MOSFET structure, the carriers were induced by the inversion channel at a high positive gate voltage. However, this design sacrifices the channel mobility and reliability because a huge number of carriers are beneath the gate insulator directly during operation. In this study, a 3-nm ultra-thin Al0.25Ga0.75N barrier was adopted to provide a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) channel underneath the gate terminal and selective area MOCVD-regrowth layer to improve the ohmic contact resistivity. An Si-rich LPCVD-SiNx gate insulator was employed to absorb trace oxygen contamination on the GaN surface and to improve the insulator/GaN interface quality. Based on the breakdown voltage, current density, and dynamic R... [more]

Design Evaluation for a Finned-Tube CO2 Gas Cooler in Residential Applications
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: experimental testing, finned-tube gas cooler, supercritical carbon dioxide
Towards the introduction of environmentally friendlier refrigerants, CO2 cycles have gained significant attention in cooling and air conditioning systems in recent years. In this context, a design procedure for an air finned-tube CO2 gas cooler is developed. The analysis aims to evaluate the gas cooler design incorporated into a CO2 air conditioning system for residential applications. Therefore, a simulation model of the gas cooler is developed and validated experimentally by comparing its overall heat transfer coefficient. Based on the model, the evaluation of different numbers of rows, lengths, and diameters of tubes, as well as different ambient temperatures, are conducted, identifying the most suitable design in terms of pressure losses and required heat exchange area for selected operational conditions. The comparison between the model and the experimental results showed a satisfactory convergence for fan frequencies from 50 to 80 Hz. The absolute average deviations of the overal... [more]

Effects of Vapor Pressure of Desiccant Solution on Mass Transfer Performance for a Spray-Bed Absorber
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Absorption, driving force, mass transfer, vapor pressure
The depression in vapor pressure caused by adding desiccant to liquid water can be regarded as the driving force for the dehumidification process. The vapor pressure depends on the temperature and the concentration. Therefore, the purpose in this study is to discuss the mass transfer performance affected by operating variables and to show that the vapor pressure is a key factor affecting the mass transfer performance for absorbing water vapor by triethylene glycol (TEG) solution. The experimental results showed that the mass transfer coefficients were decreased with increases in the temperature and increased with increases in the concentration, respectively, while the mass transfer coefficients were increased with increases in the vapor pressure depression. Although both the average error is within 5% among the mass transfer correlation involving the vapor pressure and that involving the temperature and the concentration in predicting the mass transfer coefficient, there are just two t... Influence of Leachate and Nitrifying Bacteria on Photosynthetic Biogas Upgrading in a Two-Stage System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ammonia removal, biogas upgrading, biomethane, Carbon Dioxide, gas-liquid ratio, leachate, microalgae, photobioreactor
Photosynthetic biogas upgrading using two-stage systems allows the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) in an absorption unit and its subsequent assimilation by microalgae. The production of microalgae requires large amounts of nutrients, thus making scale-up difficult and reducing economic feasibility. The photosynthetic process produces oxygen (O2) (1 mol per mol of CO2 consumed), which can be desorbed into purified biogas. Two-stage systems reduce its impact but do not eliminate it. In this study, we test the use of landfill leachate as a nutrient source and propose a viable and economical strategy for reducing the O2 concentration. First, the liquid/gas (L/G) ratio and flow mode of the absorber were optimized for 20% and 40% CO2 with COMBO medium, then landfill leachate was used as a nutrient source. Finally, the system was inoculated with nitrifying bacteria. Leachate was found to be suitable as a nutrient source and to result in a significant improvement in CO2 absorption, with out... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electrical discharges, energy distribution, insulating liquids, optical radiation
This article presents the results of the analysis of energy distribution of optical radiation emitted by electrical discharges in insulating liquids, such as synthetic ester, natural ester, and mineral oil. The measurements of optical radiation were carried out on a system of needle−needle type electrodes and on a system for surface discharges, which were immersed in brand new insulating liquids. Optical radiation was recorded using optical spectrophotometry method. On the basis of the obtained results, potential possibilities of using the analysis of the energy distribution of optical radiation as an additional descriptor for the recognition of individual sources of electric discharges were indicated. The results can also be used in the design of various types of detectors, as well as high-voltage diagnostic systems and arc protection systems.

A Preliminary Techno-Economic Analysis on the Calcium Looping Process with Simultaneous Capture of CO2 and SO2 from a Coal-Based Combustion Power Plant
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: calcium looping, Carbon Dioxide Capture, coal-based power plant, desulphurization, Technoeconomic Analysis
The increase of capital investments and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs represents a current limitation to the diffusion of carbon capture systems for the clean combustion of fossil fuels. However, post-combustion systems, such as calcium looping (CaL), for CO2 capture from flue gas are the most attractive carbon capture systems since they can be installed at new plants and retrofitted into existing power plants. This work investigates the pros and cons of employing a calcium looping system for CO2 capture and also as a desulphurization unit. A preliminary techno-economic analysis was carried out comparing a base case consisting of a coal-based power plant of about 550MWe with a desulphurization unit (Case 1), the same plant but with a CaL system added for CO2 capture (Case 2), or the same plant but with a CaL system for simultaneous capture of CO2 and SO2 and the removal of the desulphurization unit (Case 3). Lightning Performance Evaluation of Italian 150 kV Sub-Transmission Lines
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: backflashover rate, grounding system, lightning performance, Monte Carlo, sub-transmission lines
A significant majority of overhead transmission lines’ (OHLs) outages is due to backflashovers caused by direct lightning strikes: the realistic assessment of the lightning performance is thus an important task. The paper presents the analysis of the lightning performance of an existing 150 kV Italian OHL, namely, its backflashover rate (BFOR), carried out by means of an ATP-EMTP-based Monte Carlo procedure. Among other features, the procedure makes use of a simplified pi-circuit for line towers’ grounding system, allowing a very accurate reproduction of transient behaviours at a very low computational cost. Tower grounding design modifications, aimed at improving the OHL lightning performance, are also proposed and discussed.

Increasing the Device Performance of Recycling Double-Pass W-Ribs Solar Air Heaters
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: artificial W-ribs, Heat-transfer efficiency, Nusselt number, power consumption, recycling solar air heater
The device performance of recycling double-pass solar air heaters with W-ribs by machining on both sides of the absorber plate is investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is emphasized that in comparing various design configurations, they should be compared for the increase of power consumption suffered by the air passing through the collector under the same air mass flow rate and working dimensions. Compared to those of the single-pass and flat-plate double-pass device, both effects of the external recycle and the artificial W-ribs by machining enhance the collector thermal efficiency in this study. This study proposes an optimal design of the recycling W-ribs double-pass device that is expected to consider the compensation between collector thermal efficiency improvement I W due to the external recycle and the increase of power consumption I P , W owing to pumping the air circulation in the two divided subchannels. Three-Dimensional Mathematical Model of the Liquid Film Downflow on a Vertical Surface
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dimensionless parameters, gas–liquid, interfacial surface, separation layer, velocity field
Film downflow from captured liquid without wave formation and its destruction is one of the most important aspects in the development of separation equipment. Consequently, it is necessary to create well-organized liquid draining in areas of captured liquid. Thus, the proposed 3D mathematical model of film downflow allows for the determination of the hydrodynamic parameters of the liquid film flow and the interfacial surface. As a result, it was discovered that the interfacial surface depends on the proposed dimensionless criterion, which includes internal friction stress, channel length, and fluid density. Additionally, equations for determining the averaged film thickness, the averaged velocity vectors over the film thickness, the longitudinal and vertical velocity components, and the initial angle of streamline deviation from the vertical axis were analytically obtained.

System Designs and Experimental Assessment of a Seven-Mode Vehicle-Oriented Hybrid Powertrain Platform
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electric vehicle, green energy, hybrid powertrain, mechatronics, pneumatic power
This study developed a mechatronics platform for a seven-mode vehicle-oriented powertrain system. The innovative “all-in-one” concept was used for flexibly arranging various power or energy sources to be combined for various hybrid powertrains. Hence, it significantly reduces the cost and human resources for evaluating new-type power systems or developed vehicle control strategies on the same experimental platform. In this study, three power sources were chosen for providing hybrid power. The first source is a 125 c.c. spark ignition (SI) engine, where a controllable throttle valve governs the output torque, while a fuel meter measures the consumed fuel. The second one is a 1.5kW hub motor, where a motor control unit (MCU) and a 48V lithium battery pack properly provide the required electric power. The third source is an air engine, where a 220V air compressor and other components provide the pneumatic power. For the experimental platform, a developed Matlab/Simulink package receives t... Ultracapacitors for Port Crane Applications: Sizing and Techno-Economic Analysis
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy cost, energy storage system (ESS), peak shaving, ship to shore (STS) crane, Technoeconomic Analysis, ultracapacitor sizing
The use of energy storage with high power density and fast response time at container terminals (CTs) with a power demand of tens of megawatts is one of the most critical factors for peak reduction and economic benefits. Peak shaving can balance the load demand and facilitate the participation of small power units in generation based on renewable energies. Therefore, in this paper, the economic efficiency of peak demand reduction in ship to shore (STS) cranes based on the ultracapacitor (UC) energy storage sizing has been investigated. The results show the UC energy storage significantly reduce the peak demand, increasing the load factor, load leveling, and most importantly, an outstanding reduction in power and energy cost. In fact, the suggested approach is the start point to improve reliability and reduce peak demand energy consumption.

Investigation of the Process of Simple Distillation in Irrigated Pipe Elements
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Distillation, evaporator, mass streams, mass transfer, non-equimolarity, velocity profiles
In modern chemical and oil refining complexes, separation processes are among the most popular and energy-intensive. Installations for their implementation should be equipped with nodes for creating vapor (evaporators) and liquid (deflegmators) irrigation. Evaporators of any type (film, thermosiphon, gas lift, cubic) belong to this class of devices. For example, in cubic evaporators, the gas flow is completely formed from flux bubbles that originate on the heat-conducting surface and float in the volume of the cubic liquid located in the apparatus. Due to the accompanying mass exchange, the bubbles are enriched with volatile components during ascent and noticeably increase in volume, and the growth of the bubble is determined, among other things, by the total flow. At the same time, in real bubbling-type equipment, the total mass transfer surface exceeds the cross-section of the device itself by more than two orders of magnitude. Thus, according to, the ratio of the internal cross-sect... [more]

On Distributional Effects in Local Electricity Market Designs—Evidence from a German Case Study
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distributional effects, electricity market design, energy communities, local energy sharing, mixed complementarity problem (MCP), peer-to-peer trading
The European Commission’s call for energy communities has motivated academia to focus research on design and trading concepts of local electricity markets. The literature provides a wide range of conceptual ideas and analyses on the technical and economic framework of single market features such as peer-to-peer trading. The feasible, system-wide integration of energy communities into existing market structures requires, however, a set of legal adjustments to national regulation. In this paper, we test the implications of recently proposed market designs under the current rules in the context of the German market. The analysis is facilitated by a simplistic equilibrium model representing heterogeneous market participants in an energy community with their respective objectives. We find that, on the one hand, these proposed designs are financially unattractive to prosumers and consumers under the current regulatory framework. On the other hand, they even cause distributional effects withi... [more]

Impact of Core Sheet Cutting Method on Parameters of Induction Motors
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cutting method, induction motors, motor efficiency
The method of cutting motor core sheets causes a change in their magnetic properties and core losses, especially additional losses. Reducing motor losses is very important because of the fulfillment of increasingly stringent requirements set by international regulations for reducing electricity consumption. Due to fact that more and more often induction motors are supplied with high-frequency voltage, core losses are beginning to play a dominant role in the motor’s loss balance. That is why accurate determination of these losses is very important and cutting has a significant impact on them. This report shows how the method of cutting sheet metal affects losses in the finished induction motor working in a wide frequency range. The paper presents the impact of various motor core fabrication technologies on its operational parameters and an approximate way of including this impact in analytical calculations at the design stage of new machine designs, as it is necessary to use sheet metal... Keywords: CSP, Fresnel, solar, spherical concentrator, stationary reflector, tracking absorber
At any time of the day, a spherical mirror reflects the rays coming from the sun along a line that points to the sun through the center of the sphere. This makes it possible to build concentrated solar power(CSP) plants with fixed solar fields and mobile receivers; that is, solar fields can be significantly cheaper and simpler, but challenging tracking systems for the mobile receiver need to be implemented. The cost-cutting possibilities for this technology have been under-researched. This article describes the MOSAIC concept, which aims to achieve low-cost solar energy by boosting the benefits of spherical reflectors while addressing their challenges. This new concept proposes to build large modular plants from semi-Fresnel solar bowls. One of these modules has been designed and is under construction in Spain. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: demand response, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy management system is executed in microgrids for optimal integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the power distribution grids. To this end, various strategies have been more focused on cost reduction, whereas effectively both economic and technical indices/factors have to be considered simultaneously. Analysis and Design of Three-Phase Buck Rectifier Employing UPS to Supply High Reliable DC Power
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: DC distribution system, dual-active-bridge DC-DC converter, three-phase buck rectifier, UPS
In the DC distribution system, to step down the DC voltage level from the AC grid voltage, the conventional topologies require multiple power conversion stages and bulky line-frequency transformers, which degrade their power density and cost-effectiveness. In addition, the conventional topologies suffer from a shoot-through problem resulting in their low system reliability. In this paper, to overcome the above issues, systematic design approaches of a three-phase buck rectifier with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a protection algorithm are proposed to obtain the high reliability of the DC distribution system, which can deal with fault conditions and can regulate the output voltage level. It only requires a single stage of the three-phase buck rectifier. Also, a thyristor switch is added without any commutation circuits to cut off the output from the fault circuit. The shoot-through faults do not occur in the buck rectifier, leading to high reliability. A dual-active-bridge (... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electrical machines, electromagnetic model, permanent magnet, sizing methodology, thermal model
Society is turning to electrification to reduce air pollution, increasing electric machine demand. For industrial mass production, a detailed design of one machine is usually done first, then a design of similar machines, but different ratings are reached by geometry scaling. This design process may be highly time-consuming, so, in this paper, a new sizing method is proposed to reduce this time, maintaining accuracy. It is based on magnetic flux and thermal maps, both linked with an algorithm so that the sizing process of an electrical machine can be carried out in less than one minute. The magnetic flux maps are obtained by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the thermal maps are obtained by analytical models based on Lumped Parameter Circuits (LPC), applying a time-efficient procedure. The proposed methodology is validated in a real case study, sizing 10 different industrial machines. Then, the accuracy of the sizing tool is validated performing the experimental test over the 10 machin... [more]

Fresh pig urine is unsuitable for microalgae cultivation due to its high concentrations of NH4+-N, high pH and insufficient magnesium. In this study, fresh pig urine was pretreated by dilution, pH adjustment, and magnesium addition in order to polish wastewater and produce microalgae biomass. Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in an in-house-designed light-receiving-plate (LRP)-enhanced raceway pond to treat the pretreated pig urine in both batch and continuous mode under outdoor conditions. NH4+-N and TP in wastewater were detected, and the growth of C. vulgaris was evaluated by chlorophyll fluorescence activity as well as biomass production. Results indicated that an 8-fold dilution, pH adjusted to 6.0 and MgSO4·7H2O dosage of 0.1 mg·L−1 would be optimal for the pig urine pretreatment. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: combined heat and power, hybrid energy system, nuclear power plant, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy sources (RESs) play an indispensable role in sustainable advancement by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nevertheless, due to the shortcomings of RESs, an energy mix with RESs is required to support the baseload and to avoid the effects of RES variability. Fossil fuel-based thermal generators (FFTGs), like diesel generators, have been used with RESs to support the baseload. However, using FFTGs with RESs is not a good option to reduce GHG emissions. Hence, the small-scale nuclear power plant (NPPs), such as the micro-modular reactor (MMR), have become a modern alternative to FFTGs. In this paper, the authors have investigated five different hybrid energy systems (HES) with combined heat and power (CHP), named ‘conventional small-scale fossil fuel-based thermal energy system,’ ‘small-scale stand-alone RESs-based energy system,’ ‘conventional small-scale fossil fuel-based thermal and RESs-based HES,’ ‘small-scale stand-alone nuclear energy system,’ and ‘nuclear-r...
