H-Shaped Slot Antenna with Harmonic Tuning Function and Integrated Power Amplifier
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: active integrated antenna, characteristic mode analysis (CMA), class-F load, harmonic tuning antenna, microstrip patch antenna, microwave power transfer
This study proposes a patch antenna with an H-shaped slot with direct matching and harmonic tuning (rejection) functions for microwave power transfer. This antenna enables an integrated active antenna in which the power amplifier and antenna are directly connected without using a matching circuit for the fundamental frequency and harmonic rejection filter to improve the efficiency of the amplifier. The integrated design also reduces the total size of the amplifier and antenna, allowing for a higher-density array antenna. Characteristic mode analysis was performed to explain the working principle of the harmonic rejection function. The designed antenna at 5.8 GHz was fabricated to study its harmonic tuning function. The magnitude of the reflection coefficient of the proposed antenna was at a fundamental frequency of −40.4 dB for an amplification device with an optimum load impedance of 100 Ohm. At the second harmonic frequency, the magnitude and phase of the reflection coefficient at th... [more]

The Design of a Large-Scale Induction Heating Power Source for Organic Waste Digesters to Produce Fertilizer
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bioreactor, large-scale induction heating, organic waste degradation
Heating induction is a new environmentally friendly, energy-saving technology that offers a more effective performance than other common heaters. The energy-use efficiency of an inductor circuit is greater than 80 percent, while a biomass tank and tungsten coil have 70 percent and 51.8 percent efficiency, respectively. This method also produces more heat than any other forms of heating using gas or coal. The induction heating method has attracted significant interest and has seen application worldwide. Based on this important source of heating, we have designed and developed a large induction-heating machine with high energy to heat up a tank directly. The aim is to degrade organic waste as much as possible and convert it into an effective fertilizer by adding mesophilic microorganisms; the fertilizer transforming process takes no more than 24 h. The tank featured in our design has a 100-cm radius and is 155 in length; this is very large. The aim of this process is to reduce the amount... [more]

PLF Design for DC-DC Converters Based on Accurate IL Estimations
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: common mode (CM), conducted emissions, differential mode (DM), EMC, filter design, power line filter, S-parameters
Even though today’s electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards and measurement techniques set specific limitations and a clear methodology to measure the conducted emissions (CE) of equipment under tests (EUTs), the design methodology of a suitable power-line filter (PLF) to solve non-compliance is, in general, neither accurate nor efficient. This is due to different reasons, such as unknown actual load and line impedances, unknown dominant mode in the CE, and/or inappropriate instrumentation for the appropriate measurements. The objective of this paper is to investigate if different topologies of switching mode power supplies (SMPSs) lead to different PLF structures. For the sake of exemplification, the analysis is focused on switched-mode DC-DC converters. From an EMC point of view, these devices can be completely modeled by means of Scattering (S)−parameter and CE measurements. Additionally, an analysis of their circuit models has been performed to allow a better comprehension of... [more]

Evaporation of Methanol Solution for a Methanol Steam Reforming System
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: internal evaporation, methanol-reforming reaction, microchannel structure, shell-and-tube
In a methanol-reforming system, because the mixture of methanol and water must be evaporated before reaching the reforming reaction zone, having an appropriate evaporator design is a fundamental requirement for completing the reforming reaction. This study investigates the effect of the evaporator design for the stable reforming of methanol−water mixtures. Four types of evaporator are compared at the same heat duty of the methanol-reforming system. The four evaporators are planar heat exchangers containing a microchannel structure, cylindrical shell-and-tube evaporators, zirconia balls for internal evaporation, and combinations of cylindrical shell-tubes and zirconia balls. The results show that the evaporator configuration is critical in performing stable reform reactions, especially for the flow-field mode of the evaporator. Additionally, the combination of both internal and external evaporation methods generates the highest performance for the methanol-reforming system, with the met... [more]

Enhancement of Continuous-Feed Low-Cost Solar Distiller: Effects of Various Fin Designs
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distilled water, distiller, fin, remote tropical region, seawater, solar absorber
This study aimed to enhance distilled water production by employing conventional single-slope solar distillers with continuous seawater input. Three solar absorbers—i.e., a flat absorber, an absorber with 10 fins, and an absorber with 15 fins—were designed and examined experimentally. The seawater entered the distillers continuously due to gravity. Moreover, the seawater level inside the distillers was kept constant by using a floating ball valve. The overall size of each distiller was fixed at 1136 mm × 936 mm × 574 mm. The performance of the distillers was analyzed and discussed. The average yields of the flat absorber, the absorber with 10 fins, and the absorber with 15 fins were 1.185 L/d, 1.264 L/d, and 1.404 L/d, respectively. The results of the absorber with 15 fins were about 18.5% higher than those of the flat absorber. The experimental results were compared with the established correlations. This new design with increased water yield provides an effective approach for harvest... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: biophilia, construction project, COVID-19, foreign workers, Malaysia, project communications management
The property sector is revitalised to incorporate sustainability, specifically the biophilic design, to encourage human interaction with nature. Thus, there is an urgent need to communicate the biophilic design elements amongst stakeholders, especially the foreign workers, to ensure the project meets the requirement. However, standard project communications management is no longer practical, as the construction industry worldwide has been severely impacted by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Hence, this paper evaluates the biophilic design elements to be communicated and examines the project communications management breakdown relating to the biophilic design elements in the Malaysian construction industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a systematic literature review (SLR), focus group discussion (FGD) and questionnaire survey on 147 foreign workers, this paper found that from 33 biophilic design element items, only 1 item is categorised as highly critical, wher... Dominant Processing Factors in Two-Step Fabrication of Pure Sulfide CIGS Absorbers
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: pure sulfide CIGS, rapid thermal annealing, two-step sequential processing
Pure sulfide CIGS solar cells are interesting candidates for standalone solar cells or top cells in a tandem configuration. To understand the limits and improve the power conversion efficiency of these devices, a comprehensive approach aimed at composition, interface, and process engineering should be employed. Here, the latter was explored. Using a two-step fabrication technique and one-variable-at-a-time methodology, we found the four processing factors affecting the absorber the most. While two were already backed by the previous literature, we found new and statistical evidence for two other important factors as well. The impact of alkali barrier diffusion was also established with statistical significance and under various processing conditions. Furthermore, the absorber roughness for samples without a barrier indicated a significant negative linear correlation with the devices’ efficiency. This contribution could aid engineers in more efficient process designs.

Design of a Bézier-Profile Plate for Closely Spaced Multimodal Vibration Energy Harvesting
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Bézier curve, energy harvesting, multimodal
A cubic Bézier-profile plate for multimodal vibration energy harvesting was developed. The design of the plate was based on an optimization procedure in which the profile of the plate was optimized via the parameters of a cubic Bézier curve to meet the requirements. The multimodal energy harvesting of the plate exploited its first bending mode and its first twisting mode. The conversion of vibration energy into electrical energy was by electromagnetic induction with a magnet attached to a corner of the plate. These two closely spaced vibration modes achieved the multi-modal energy harvesting of the device. Prototypes of the device were manufactured using a numerical-control machining process. The experimental results were in good agreement with the design specifications. With the same base lengths, height, and thickness, the maximum von Mises stress of the proposed plate was much lower due to its bell-shaped profile. The cubic Bézier curve chosen for the plate profile was effective for... [more]

Application of the Harmonic Balance Method for Spatial Harmonic Interactions Analysis in Axial Flux PM Generators
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial flux generator, harmonic balance method, permanent magnet machines, spatial harmonic interaction
In this paper, an application of the Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) for analysis of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator (AFPMG) is carried out. Particular attention was paid to development of mathematical model equations allowing to estimate the machine properties, without having to use quantitative solutions. The methodology used here allowed for precise determination of Fourier spectra with respect to winding currents and electromagnetic torque (both quantitatively and qualitatively) in steady state operation. Analyses of space harmonic interaction in steady states were presented for the three-phase AFPMG. Satisfactory convergence was between the results of calculations and measurements which confirmed the initial assumption that the developed circuit models of AFPMG are sufficiently accurate and can be useful in the diagnostic analyses, tests and the final stages of the design process.

Bioenergy Production through Mono and Co-Digestion of Tomato Residues
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: agro-industrial residues, anaerobic digestion, biochemical methane potential, co-digestion, design of experiments
The agro-industry of tomato generates three types of residues: ripe rotten tomato (unfit for consumption) (RT), green (unripe) tomato (GT), and tomato branches including leaves and stems (TB). These materials are commonly wasted or used as feed for livestock. Energy production through anaerobic digestion is an alternative way to manage and simultaneously valorise these materials. Initially, the operating conditions of mono anaerobic digestion were investigated using RT. Thus, a design of experiments based on a two-level fractional factorial design with resolution V was performed to determine the factors that affect biochemical methane potential (BMP). The substrate to inoculum ratio (SIR), total volatile solids concentration (VSt), working volume (WV), presence of nutrients (Nu), and the pre-incubation of the inoculum (Inc) were investigated. The results showed that SIR is the most important factor. The maximum BMP for RT was 297 NmLCH4/gVS with SIR = 0.5; tVS = 20 g/L; WV = 20%; no pr... [more]

Degradation Mechanism of Pressure-Assisted Sintered Silver by Thermal Shock Test
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fracture mechanism, low thermal impedance packaging, porosity, sintered silver, thermal mechanical reliability design
This paper investigates the degradation mechanism of pressure-sintered silver (s-Ag) film for silicon carbide (SiC) chip assembly with a 2-millimeter-thick copper substrate by means of thermal shock test (TST). Two different types of silver paste, nano-sized silver paste (NP) and nano-micron-sized paste (NMP), were used to sinter the silver film at 300 °C under a pressure of 60 MPa. The mean porosity (p) of the NP and MNP s-Ag films was 2.4% and 8%, respectively. The pore shape of the NP s-Ag was almost spherical, whereas the NMP s-Ag had an irregular shape resembling a peanut shell. After performing the TST at temperatures ranging from −40 to 150 °C, the scanning acoustic tomography (SAT) results suggested that delamination occurs from the edge of the assembly, and the delamination of the NMP s-Ag assembly was faster than that of the NM s-Ag assembly. The NMP s-Ag assembly showed a random delamination, indicating that the delamination speed varies from place to place. The difference i... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: biogas, Energy, grass clippings, turf mowing, waste biomass utilization
The mowing of sports fields generates a significant amount of waste biomass which requires appropriate management. On the largest scale, this problem affects golf courses with a grass surface area of up to 100 ha. Currently, the main directions for grass clippings management include composting, grass cycling, and waste. A certain alternative may be the energetic utilization of grass clippings, which not only solves the problem of organic waste management, but also brings measurable economic profits in the form of generated electricity and heat. This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of the application of a micro biogas plant, fed with grass clippings from a golf course project in Tuscany, with a grass surface of 111.21 ha. It has been shown that the annual biomass potential is 526.65 tDM∙year−1 (±45.64 tDM∙year−1), which makes it possible to build a micro biogas plant with an electric power of ca. 46 kW. Improving the Load Estimation Process in the Design of Rural Electrification Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: customer habits, gender aspects, load estimation, load profiles, rural electrification
The design of reliable and sustainable rural electrification systems relies on accurate prediction of the electrical load. This paper evaluates the current methods for load estimation and proposes an improved approach for load estimation for off-grid unelectrified rural communities that yields more accurate estimates. Improved accuracy is mainly due to better modelling of the influence of customer habits and gender on the estimated current and future load using the Markov chain process. A program was developed using MATLAB software to generate load profiles. The results show that gender considerations have a significant impact on load profiles and that the Markov chain process can suitably be used to determine year-to-year load profiles by incorporating the effect of changes in customer habits on the estimated load. The results from the case study on energy consumption in rural community households showed an increase in average daily consumption when gender was considered during load e... [more]

Investigation of the Torque Production Mechanism of Dual-Stator Axial-Field Flux-Switching Permanent Magnet Motors
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: double-side slotting, dual stator axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (DSAFFSPM) machine, magnetic force (MMF)-permeance model, torque production mechanism
This paper studies the torque production mechanism of the dual-stator axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (DSAFFSPM) machine. Due to the double-sided slotting design of such topology, more resultant air-gap working harmonics in the air-gap flux density are responsible for the torque production and the stator air-gap permeance is especially considered in the investigation. Based on the magnetic force (MMF)-permeance model, the composition and difference of the air-gap working harmonics are demonstrated. The DSAFFSPM machine torque contributions of the main working harmonics are analyzed theoretically and quantified by finite element analysis (FEA). The influence laws of the parameters on the working harmonics are shown and this effectively improves the motor operation performance. Finally, some experiments on the DSAFFSPM machine are carried out to validate the analytical and FEA results.

Performance of Pure Crossflow Heat Exchanger in Sensible Heat Transfer Application
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: correction factors, design graphs, pure cross flow heat exchanger
All process industries involve the usage of heat exchanger equipment and understanding its performance during the design phase is very essential. The present research work specifies the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger in terms of dimensionless factors such as number of transfer units, capacity rate ratio, and heat exchanger effectiveness. Steady state sensible heat transfer was considered in the analysis. The matrix approach that was established in the earlier work was used in the study. The results were depicted in the form of charts, tables, and performance equations. It was observed that indeterminately increasing the number of transfer units past a threshold limit provided very marginal improvement in the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger. Likewise, flow pattern in a heat exchanger is usually assumed either as mixed or unmixed. However, due to various operating conditions, partially mixed conditions do exist. Noise Reduction Design with Trapezoidal Back-EMF and Asymmetric Air-Gap for Single-Phase BLDC Refrigerator Cooling Fan Motor
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: asymmetric air-gap, claw-pole motor, fast Fourier transform, noise reduction design, single-phase BLDC motor, trapezoidal back-EMF
In this study, a novel method for reducing the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors employed as refrigerator fan blowers is proposed. A single-phase claw-pole motor has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing, and a high number of turns. However, in such motors, current delays occur owing to a high inductance; therefore, it is necessary to merge the back-electromotive force and current phases into the same phase using the phase advance method. Additionally, a single-phase motor exhibits dead torque and zero torque at an electrical angle of 180° owing to its electrical characteristics, and the dead torque deteriorates the average torque and torque ripple characteristics of the motor. In this study, a novel method is proposed to make the air gap asymmetrical by tilting the claw to reduce the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors. An asymmetric air gap allows the cogging torque to eliminate the dead torque caused by alignment torques, causing th... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: efficient lighting, Jordan, LED, low energy building, optimum windows size, WWR
Based on recent developments and the predicted future advancement of lighting technologies, researchers are now questioning the extent to which daylight is effective in lowering the overall energy consumption of buildings. As light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are highly energy efficient, the amount of power consumed for lighting purposes can be reduced, even in situations where the lighting system is at its full power. It has already been demonstrated that LED-lighting technologies can facilitate significant energy savings through minimizing window size (the main source of heat loss in buildings), and there is considerable potential for developing the LEDs’ source efficacy and lighting-product efficiency to ultimately achieve levels of efficacy of approximately 350 lumens per Watt (lm/W). For building designs to be sustainable in the future, it is critical that the windows-to-wall ratio (WWR) is optimized to minimize both heating and cooling loads, as well as the total energy consu... Electric vehicles (EVs) have recently gained momentum as an integral part of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) when authorities started expanding their low emission zones (LEZs) in an effort to build green cities with low carbon footprints. Energy is one of the key requirements of EVs, not only to support the smooth and sustainable operation of EVs, but also to ensure connectivity between the vehicle and the infrastructure in the critical times such as disaster recovery operation. In this context, renewable energy sources (such as wind energy) have an important role to play in the automobile sector towards designing energy-harvesting electric vehicles (EH-EV) to mitigate energy reliance on the national grid. In this article, a novel approach is presented to harness energy from a small-scale wind turbine due to vehicle mobility to support the communication primitives in electric vehicles which enable plenty of IoV use cases. Phase-Shifted Full Bridge (PSFB) topology in its four-diode variant is the choice with the lowest part count in applications that demand high power, high voltage, and galvanic isolation, such as in Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers. Even though the topology is prevalent in power electronics applications, no single, unified analytical model has been proposed for the design process of four-diode PSFB converters. As a result, engineers must rely on simulations and empirical results obtained from previously built converters when selecting components to properly match the DC source voltage level with the DC load voltage requirements. In this work, the authors provide a design-oriented analysis approach for obtaining the output voltage and semiconductor current values, ready for implementation in a spreadsheet- or MATLAB-type software to automate design optimization.
