Revisiting Electricity Network Tariffs in a Context of Decarbonization, Digitalization, and Decentralization
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: customer response, distributed energy resources, electricity network tariffs, tariff principles
The electricity system is evolving due to three driven forces: decarbonization, digitalization, and decentralization (3 Ds). Should these three forces occur, electricity network tariffs must be revisited. In most countries, actual network charges incentivize inefficient network usage when volumetric or low granular (temporal and locational) charges are applied. This paper analyses the effect of 3 Ds on tariff design principles and proposes an efficient methodology for network tariff design that promotes efficient usage of the network as well as an equitable share of the costs for network users. The proposed network tariff consists of two components: a peak-coincident and a fixed charge. The peak-coincident forward-looking charge considers the cost of future network reinforcements required, calculated element-by-element, and assigned to customers during the peak utilization hours of each network element. Fixed charges allocate the residual part of the total network costs following equit... [more]

Factors Influencing the Prediction of Pile Driveability Using CPT-Based Approaches
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CPT, driveability, pile design, pile installation, piles
This paper investigates the applicability of Cone Penetration Test (CPT)-based axial capacity approaches, used for estimating pile static capacity, to the prediction of pile driveability. An investigation of the influence of various operational parameters in a driveability study is conducted. A variety of axial capacity approaches (IC-05, UWA-05 and Fugro-05) are assessed in unmodified and modified form to appraise their ability to be used in estimating the driveability of open-ended steel piles used to support, for example, offshore jackets or bridge piers. Modifications to the CPT-based design approaches include alterations to the proposed base resistance to account for the resistance mobilized under discrete hammer impacts and the presence of residual stresses, as well as accounting for the effects of static capacity increases over time, namely ageing. Furthermore, a study on the influence of various operational parameters within a wave equation solver is conducted to ascertain the... [more]

Techno-Economic Assessment of the Use of Syngas Generated from Biomass to Feed an Internal Combustion Engine
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: biomass gasification, Energy Efficiency, internal combustion engines-generator, Monte Carlo method, small-scale systems, Technoeconomic Analysis
The focus of this study is to provide a comparative techno-economic analysis concerning the deployment of small-scale gasification systems in dealing with various fuels from two countries, Portugal and Brazil, for electricity generation in a 15 kWe downdraft gasifier. To quantify this, a mathematical model was implemented and validated against experimental runs gathered from the downdraft reactor. Further, a spreadsheet economic model was developed combining the net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and the payback period (PBP) over the project’s lifetime set to 25 years. Cost factors included expenses related to electricity generation, initial investment, operation and maintenance and fuel costs. Revenues were estimated from the electricity sales to the grid. A Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis was used to measure the performance of the economic model and determine the investment risk. The analysis showed an electricity production between 11.6 to 15 kW, with a general... [more]

Non-Uniform Three-Dimensional Pulsating Heat Pipe for Anti-Gravity High-Flux Applications
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anti-gravity, compact arrangement, pulsating heat pipe, thermal resistance ratio
This study proposes a novel high-flux pulsating heat pipe that can lift the major constraint of the conventional pulsating heat pipe (PHP) which is unable to function properly upon anti-gravity operations. The proposed PHP introduces additional unbalance force via uneven tube diameter/geometry in the adiabatic sections to tailor the problem in anti-gravity operation. The design contains a three-dimensional configuration circuitry with compact arrangement tubes on the evaporator and condenser. Through this design, the non-uniform three-dimensional pulsating heat pipe (3D-PHP) manipulates the uneven inner diameters of the adiabatic sections to form uneven vapor/liquid distributions in the adiabatic sections to yield a unitary flow pattern that is able to withstand a much higher input power. The present PHP uses methanol as working fluid, with 38% volumetric filling ratio, and has a high-flux of 22.9 W/cm2 and a low the thermal resistance ratio (Ranti-gravity/Rgravity-assisted) of 1.05 wh... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: business model classification, business model framework for the energy transformation, business model ontology, business models, Energiewende, energy transformation, value creation networks
The energy transformation is changing the structure of the energy sector in Europe and Germany. In this paper the current structure of the energy sector is analysed both empirically as well as theoretically. Therefore, the authors have developed the business model framework for the energy transformation (BMFE). The framework is a synthesis of classical business model designs. An exhaustive survey of existing business models based on primary data collection and a literature review leads to 638 business models. Finally, 69 prototypical business models of the energy sector are the result of the classification of these business models. The information of the business models within the BMFE is applied to show the growing importance of value creation networks in energy industry. The work represents the current status of the business models in the energy sector.

Experimental Assessment on Air Clearance of Multiple Valve Unit Considering Switching Impulse and DC Superimposed Switching Impulse
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air clearance, critical flashover voltage, DC, DC pre-stress, dielectric characteristics, HVDC, multiple valve unit, superimposed, switching impulse
Multiple valve unit (MVU), which converts AC to DC and DC to AC, is one of the key elements of high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission. Therefore, the insulation design of MVU against overvoltage should be considered for the stable and reliable operation of HVDC transmission system. Especially, the air clearance of MVU should be calculated based the switching impulse, since it is fatal to MVU in terms of electrical insulation. However, the previous studies were limited to wave front, and the air clearance of the switching impulse is specified only for an ultra-high voltage (UHV) above 750 kV. As a result, it is difficult to calculate the air clearance of MVU which must endure for a switching impulse under 750 kV. In addition, when the switching impulse introduced while the MVU is in normal operation, it is superimposed to DC and creates the most severe situation, but the studies on such subjects are also insufficient. Therefore, as a fundamental step to calculate the air clearance of MVU,... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dynamic conditions, HeLLo, historic masonries, hygrothermal measurement, in situ, metering hot box
The main purpose of the HeLLo project is to contribute to data available on the literature on the real hygrothermal behavior of historic walls and the suitability of insulation technologies. Furthermore, it also aims at minimizing the energy simulation errors at the design phase and at improving their conservation features. In this framework, one of the preliminary activities of the study is the creation of a real in situ hot box to measure and analyze different insulation technologies applied to a real historic wall, to quantify the hygrothermal performance of a masonry building. Inside this box, ‘traditional’ experiments can be carried out: recording heat flux, surface temperature, and air temperatures, as well as relative humidity values through the use of a new sensing system (composed of thermocouples and temperature/relative humidity combined sensors). Within this paper, the process of development, construction, and validation of this new metering box is exhibited. The new hot bo... [more]

Integral PWR-Type Small Modular Reactor Developmental Status, Design Characteristics and Passive Features: A Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: integrated pressurized water reactors, passive safety systems, small modular reactors
In recent years, the trend in small modular reactor (SMR) technology development has been towards the water-cooled integral pressurized water reactor (iPWR) type. The innovative and unique characteristics of iPWR-type SMRs provide an enhanced safety margin, and thus offer the potential to expand the use of safe, clean, and reliable nuclear energy to a broad range of energy applications. Currently in the world, there are about eleven (11) iPWR-type SMRs concepts and designs that are in various phases of development: under construction, licensed or in the licensing review process, the development phase, and conceptual design phase. Lack of national and/or internatonal comparative framework for safety in SMR design, as well as the proprietary nature of designs introduces non-uniformity and uncertainties in regulatory review. That said, the major primary reactor coolant system components, such as the steam generator (SG), pressurizer (PRZ), and control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) are integr... [more]

An Insight into the Separation of 1,2-Propanediol, Ethylene Glycol, Acetol and Glycerol from an Aqueous Solution by Adsorption on Activated Carbon
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 1,2-propanediol, acetol, activated carbon, Adsorption, ethylene glycol, glycerol
Glycerol conversion processes such as aqueous phase reforming and hydrogenolysis generate value-added compounds highly diluted in water. Because distillation is a high energy demand separation step, adsorption could be an attractive alternative to recover these chemicals. Adsorption isotherms of 1,2-propanediol, acetol, ethylene glycol and glycerol onto activated carbon were determined by batch adsorption experiments. These isotherms were fitted slightly better to the Freundlich equation than to the Langmuir equation. Acetol is the compound with the highest adsorption at concentrations smaller than 1 M. Properties of the adsorbate such as the −OH group number, chain length, molecular size and dipole moment, besides characteristics of the adsorbent such as the surface area, oxygen and ash content, are considered to explain the observed results. Moreover, adsorption experiments were performed with mixtures of compounds and it was determined that the molar amount adsorbed is less than pre... [more]

Thermal and Kinetic Behaviors during Co-Pyrolysis of Microcrystalline Cellulose and Styrene−Butadiene−Styrene Triblock Copolymer
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: activation energy, co-pyrolysis, interaction, municipal solid waste, thermogravimetric
The interaction between various municipal solid waste components is very important for the actual solid waste treatment process. Microcrystalline cellulose (MC) and styrene−butadiene−styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) are important components of municipal solid waste. In this paper, co-pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics of MC and SBS with different heating rates were investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The overlap ratio was defined to evaluate the interaction between MC and SBS. The results showed that the decomposition temperature of MC was lower than that of SBS during pyrolysis. The interaction between MC and SBS, an inhibitory effect, was most significant when the MC mass fraction was 70% with an overlap ratio of 0.9764. SBS had almost no effect on the pyrolysis temperature of MC, while MC delayed the pyrolysis of SBS. Adding MC in SBS can significantly reduce the energy required for the reaction.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ammonia synthesis, Energy Efficiency, heat transfer, multi-pass arrangement, optimal design, plate heat exchanger
The production of ammonia, consuming up to 5% of natural gas global production, accounts for about 2% of world energy. Worldwide, the Haber−Bosch process is the mainly used method of ammonia catalytic synthesis, involving temperatures up to 600 °C and pressures up to 32 MPa. In this paper, the results of the development and study of the special welded construction of plate heat exchanger (WPHE) for a column of ammonia synthesis are presented. The heat transfer and hydraulic performance of developed WPHE are investigated on a one-pass model in laboratory conditions. An equation for the relation between heat transfer effectiveness and the number of heat transfer units is proposed. A mathematical model of multi-pass WPHE is developed using these results. The validity of this model is confirmed by results of industrial tests performed with the prototype WPHE installed in operating column of ammonia synthesis at temperatures about 500 °C and pressure about 32 MPa. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: high-rise building, pedestrian-level wind, street canyon, urban design, wind tunnel
We are investigating how to use urban design approaches to conduct the layout and basic design of newly-built high-rise buildings to reduce wind obstruction and create effective urban ventilation. Few studies have addressed this issue. This study analyzes the effects of high-rise building on pedestrian-level wind in downstream street canyons based on wind tunnel test results, and examines the suitability of an urban design specification. The height (H) of high-rise buildings and the airflow passage width (S) between adjacent high-rise buildings are key control factors for this issue; H/D = 3 and S/D = 1.125 are critical parameters and recommended values (D is the height of the downstream street blocks).

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, bioenergy perspectives, cheese whey, industrial hemp, methane, residual feedstock, techno-economic assessment
Cheese whey (CW) and hemp hurds (HH) represent typically overabundant biowastes of food and agricultural production, and their circular management is crucial to improve both sustainability and profitability of the agri-food chain. By combining experimental biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests and literature data, the techno-economic aspects of a possible future bioenergy valorization of CW and HH through anaerobic digestion (AD) and co- digestion (coAD) were analyzed. Along the 42-days, BMP assays, CW, and HH alone rendered BMP values of 446 ± 66 and 242 ± 13 mL CH4·g VS−1, respectively. The application of coAD with CW and HH at a 70:30 ratio allowed to enhance the biomethane production by 10.7%, as compared to the corresponding calculated value. In terms of economic profitability, the valorization of HH as biomethane in a dual-purpose hemp cultivation could potentially enable net profits of up to 3929 €·ha−1, which could rise to 6124 €·ha−1 in case of coAD with CW. Analysis and Design of Coupled Inductor for Interleaved Buck-Type Voltage Balancer in Bipolar DC Microgrid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bipolar DC microgrid, coupled inductor, interleaved-type DC–DC converter, LVDC distribution system, voltage balancer
A voltage balancer (VB) can be used to balance voltages under load unbalance in either a bipolar DC microgrid or LVDC (Low voltage DC) distribution system. An interleaved buck-type VB has advantages over other voltage balance topologies for reduction in output current ripple by an aspect of configuration of a physically symmetrical structure. Similarly, magnetic coupling such as winding two or more magnetic components into a single magnetic component can be selected to enhance the power density and dynamic response. In order to achieve these advantages in a VB, this paper proposes a VB with a coupled inductor (CI) as a substitute for inductors in a two-stage interleaved buck-type VB circuit. Based on patterns of switch poles under load variation, the variation in inductor currents under four switching patterns is induced. The proposed CI is derived from self-inductance based on the configuration structure that has a two-stage interleaved buck type and mathematical design results based... [more]

The Flow Characteristics of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SC-CO2) Jet Fracturing in Limited Perforation Scenarios
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: flow field, jet fracturing, limited perforation, supercritical carbon dioxide
Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) jet fracturing is a promising alternative for shale gas fracturing instead of water. However, most studies pay more attention to the fracture generation and ignore the flow characteristic of SC-CO2 jet fracturing in limited perforation scenarios. To accurately explore the flow field in a limited perforation tunnel, a numerical model of a SC-CO2 jet in a limited perforation tunnel before fracture initiation is established based on the corresponding engineering background. The comparison between the numerical simulation and experiments has proved that the model is viable for this type of analysis. By using the numerical method, the flow field of the SC-CO2 jet fracturing is analyzed, and influencing factors are discussed later. The verification and validation show that the numerical model is both reliable and accurate.
