Performance Analysis of an Experimental Linear Encoder’s Reading Head under Different Mounting and Dynamic Conditions
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: grating, measuring scale, moiré effect, optical encoder, reading head
The performance of an optical linear encoder is described and evaluated by certain parameters such as its resolution, accuracy and repeatability. The best encoder for a particular application, just like other sensors, is usually selected according these parameters. There are, however, many side effects that have a direct influence on the optimal operation of an encoder. In order to understand how to minimize these harmful effects, a deeper knowledge of an encoder’s performance and a method for determining these factors are necessary. The main aspects of an encoder’s accuracy, resolution and repeatability are briefly reviewed in this paper. Discussed and developed in previous work, the experimental reading head for a Moiré effect-based optical linear encoder is used for the experimental analysis of the influence of different reading head designs on an encoder’s performance under various mounting inaccuracies and dynamic conditions.

Experimental Study on the Transient Disturbance Characteristics and Influence Factors of Pantograph−Catenary Discharge
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: arcing discharge, current pulse, electromagnetic disturbance, experimental investigation, pantograph–catenary, radiation, railway, relative motion
The transient electromagnetic disturbance generated by arcing discharge between the pantograph and catenary can pose a significant risk to the safe operation of electrified railways. In order to better comprehend its properties, a pantograph−catenary discharge generating device is designed to simulate the discharge phenomenon with moving electrodes in this experimental investigation. The effects of the applied voltage, the gap distance, and the relative motion between the pantograph and catenary on the time- and frequency-domain features of the discharge current and electromagnetic field are investigated. The variation trends of pulse peak current, rise time, pulse repetition frequency, maximum amplitude, and characteristic frequency in the radiation spectrum are retrieved under varying experimental settings, and the effect mechanisms are derived from the physics of gas discharge. A dynamic discharge test is conducted in this study in order to further understand the effect of electrode... [more]

Design and Analysis of Novel CO2 Conditioning Process in Ship-Based CCS
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, CCS hub Dunkirk, CO2 conditioning, CO2 liquefaction, DMXTM process
In this work, CO2 conditioning processes for ship-based CCS sequestration are modelled using the software APSEN HYSYS V11. This study uses the captured CO2 gas from the 3D project as the feed. The feed stream contains water, H2S, and CO as contaminants. The purification processes for dehydration, desulfurization, and CO removal are reviewed. Two liquefaction approaches, the open-cycle and the closed-cycle liquefaction, are modelled and compared for transport pressures 7 and 15 bar. It is found that the energy requirement of the open-cycle process is higher than that of the closed-cycle liquefaction process. For the closed-cycle design, two refrigerants, ammonia and propane, are considered. Results show that the energy requirement of the process using ammonia is lower than that of propane. When comparing the two transport pressures, it is found that liquefaction at 15 bar requires less energy than 7 bar. On top of that, both refrigerants are unsuited for the liquefaction of CO2 at 7 bar... [more]

Design and Improvement of SD3-Based Energy Management Strategy for a Hybrid Electric Urban Bus
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: action masking, deep reinforcement learning, energy management strategy, hybrid electric urban bus
With the rapid development of machine learning, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms have recently been widely used for energy management in hybrid electric urban buses (HEUBs). However, the current DRL-based strategies suffer from insufficient constraint capability, slow learning speed, and unstable convergence. In this study, a state-of-the-art continuous control DRL algorithm, softmax deep double deterministic policy gradients (SD3), is used to develop the energy management system of a power-split HEUB. In particular, an action masking (AM) technique that does not alter the SD3′s underlying principles is proposed to prevent the SD3-based strategy from outputting invalid actions that violate the system’s physical constraints. Additionally, the transfer learning (TL) method of the SD3-based strategy is explored to avoid repetitive training of neural networks in different driving cycles. The results demonstrate that the learning performance and learning stability of SD3 are una... [more]

Coupling Chemical Heat Pump with Nuclear Reactor for Temperature Amplification by Delivering Process Heat and Electricity: A Techno-Economic Analysis
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: chemical heat pump, industrial thermal processes, nuclear energy, techno-economic, temperature boost
The energy economy is continually evolving in response to socio-political factors in the nature of primary energy sources, their conversions to useful forms, such as electricity and heat, and their utilization in different sectors. Nuclear energy has a crucial role to play in the evolution of energy economy due to its clean and non-carbon-emitting characteristics. A techno-economic analysis was undertaken to establish the viability of selling heat along with electricity for an advanced 100 MWth small modular reactor (SMR) and four nuclear hybrid energy system (NHES) configurations featuring the SMR paired with chemical heat pump (ChHP) systems providing a thermal output ranging from 1 to 50 MWth. Net present value, payback period, discounted cash flow rate of return, and levelized cost of energy were evaluated for these systems for different regions of U.S. reflecting a range of electricity and thermal energy costs. The analysis indicated that selling heat to high temperature industria... [more]

Repowering a Coal Power Unit with Small Modular Reactors and Thermal Energy Storage
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: molten salt thermal energy storage, retrofit decarbonization, small modular reactors, supercritical steam cycles, techno-economic assessment
In the first months of 2022, there was a sharp turn in the energy policy of the European Union, initially spurred by increasing energy prices and further escalated by Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. Further transformation of the energy system will likely be accompanied by the gradual abandonment of natural gas from Russia and an increase of renewable and nuclear energy. Such a transition will not only increase energy security, but also accelerate the pace at which greenhouse gas emissions are reduced in Europe. This could be achieved more effectively if some of the new nuclear energy capacity is optimized to play an increased balancing role in the energy system, thus allowing for deeper market penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources with a reduced need for flexible fossil backup power and storage. A double effect of decarbonization can be achieved by investments in nuclear repowering of coal-fired units, with the replacement of coal boiler islands with nuclear reactor sy... [more]

Techno-Economic Analysis of Low Carbon Hydrogen Production from Offshore Wind Using Battolyser Technology
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: battolyser, electrolysis, Energy Storage, NPV, stochastic modelling, wind generation
A battolyser is a combined battery electrolyser in one unit. It is based on flow battery technology and can be adapted to produce hydrogen at a lower efficiency than an electrolyser but without the need for rare and expensive materials. This paper presents a method of determining if a battolyser connected to a wind farm makes economic sense based on stochastic modelling. A range of cost data and operational scenarios are used to establish the impact on the NPV and LCOE of adding a battolyser to a wind farm. The results are compared to adding a battery or an electrolyser to a wind farm. Indications are that it makes economic sense to add a battolyser or battery to a wind farm to use any curtailed wind with calculated LCOE at £56/MWh to £58/MWh and positive NPV over a range of cost scenarios. However, electrolysers, are still too expensive to make economic sense.

Numerical Investigations of a Non-Uniform Stator Dihedral Design Strategy for a Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) Fan
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BLI fan, boundary layer ingestion, dihedral blade, flow separation, inlet distortion, non-uniform stator design
A distributed propulsion system has the advantage of saving 5−15% fuel burn through ingesting the fuselage boundary layer of an aircraft by fan or compressor. However, due to boundary layer ingestion (BLI), the fan stage will continuously operate under serious inlet distortion. This will lead to a circumferentially non-uniform flow separation distribution on the stator blade suction surface along the annulus, which significantly decreases the fan’s adiabatic efficiency. To solve this problem, a non-uniform stator dihedral design strategy has been developed to explore its potential of improving BLI fan performance. First, the stator full-annulus blade passages were divided into blade dihedral design regions and baseline design regions on the basis of the additional aerodynamic loss distributions caused by BLI inlet distortion. Then, to find the appropriate dihedral design parameters, the full-annulus BLI fan was discretized into several portions according to the rotor blade number and t... [more]

Design of an Anti-Corona Device for HVAC Substation Connectors
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: computer-aided manufacturing, connector, corona ring, electric fields, high voltage
One of the aspects to consider during high-voltage (HV) equipment design is the reduction in the probability of corona effect onset. Indeed, the corona effect is related to high electric field values beyond the equipment’s insulation levels and insulation strength, among other factors. This issue can be addressed during the design step, either by modifying the geometry of the electrical device or by including additional elements in the equipment structure to smooth out the voltage gradient along critical regions, such as anti-corona devices. The study of anti-corona devices for HV insulators is well documented, in contrast to substation connectors. Therefore, the present study proposed the design of a novel anti-corona device for HV substation connectors, including a method for the selection of its dimensions. This study shows that the relationship between the dimensional design variables and the critical electrical field on the connector is described by linear and rational functions.... [more]

Design and Construction of Foundations for Industrial Facilities in the Areas of Former Post-Mining Waste Dumps
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: coal-waste dumps, foundation on the embankment lands, ground improvement, self-ignition of heaps
This article presents the characteristics of the heaps resulting from coal exploitation in terms of the possibility of their development for industrial facilities. The chances of soil improvement and the existing threats were indicated, emphasising the risk of self-ignition. The most effective technologies are dynamic or impulse compaction, which allows deep soil improvement and the obtaining of an appropriately rigid and load-bearing subsoil. The homogeneity of the soil’s mechanical properties that form the subsoil is also essential, which guarantees compliance with the serviceability limit state. A very important aspect of the investment process in the post-mining waste dumps is the risk of auto-ignition of the accumulated material. Considerations and analyses are presented on the example of the implementation of Panatonni service, warehouse, and production halls in Ruda Śląska. The performance of impulse compaction allowed for the safe construction of industrial halls. In particular... [more]

Transesterification Using Ultrasonic Spray of Triolein Containing CaO Particles into Methanol Vapor in a 3-Phase Reactor
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CaO, methanol vapor, three-phase reactor, transesterification, triolein, ultrasonic spraying
Ultrasonic spraying was used in a three-phase reactor to produce small droplets of triolein mixed with CaO as a solid catalyst at temperatures above the boiling point of methanol for enhancement of the transesterification of triolein. Droplets fell in the methanol countercurrent flow and were collected at the bottom of the reactor, followed by circulation to the ultrasonic spray system. The experimental parameters included triolein flow rates of 2.5−9.0 mL/min, reaction temperatures of 70−100 °C, and catalyst contents of 1.0−7.0 wt%. The methanol feed rate was set to be constant. The results suggested that the enhancement was successful after using the three-phase reactor by generating a high contact surface area for the droplets, which was a key factor for determining the performance. Comparing the results with conventional transesterification in the liquid phase using the same CaO at 60 °C, the three-phase reactor produced a methyl ester yield 2−5% higher during the 60 min trial peri... A Logistic Approach for Kinetics of Isothermal Pyrolysis of Cellulose
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cellulose, degradation, isothermal, kinetics, pyrolysis
A kinetic model is proposed to fit isothermal thermogravimetric data obtained from cellulose in an inert atmosphere at different temperatures. The method used here to evaluate the model involves two steps: (1) fitting of single time-derivative thermogravimetric curves (DTG) obtained at different temperatures versus time, and (2) fitting of the rate parameter values obtained at different temperatures versus temperature. The first step makes use of derivative of logistic functions. For the second step, the dependence of the rate factor on temperature is evaluated. That separation of the curve fitting from the analysis of the rate factor resulted to be very flexible since it proved to work for previous crystallization studies and now for thermal degradation of cellulose.

Optimal Design of a Hydrolysis Sugar Membrane Purification System Using a Superstructure-Based Approach
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bioethanol production, mathematical programming, nanofiltration, network synthesis, salt removal
As an alternative to gasoline, bioethanol can be produced from lignocellulosic biomass through hydrolysis using an ionic solution containing zinc chloride (ZnCl2). This method allows for a high yield of glucose from lignocellulose, but entails the removal of ZnCl2 from the hydrolysate using multiple nanofiltration membranes before the fermentation of glucose. This paper presents a mathematical technique for designing such a multistage membrane separation system. The optimization model for the synthesis of membrane networks is based on a superstructure with all feasible interconnections between the membrane units, and consists of mass balances, logical constraints and product specifications. A case study of the separation of a bagasse hydrolysis solution is used to demonstrate the application of the proposed model. Results show that using both types of nanofiltration membranes allows higher ZnCl2 removal ratios at each membrane unit, hence a decrease in the number of membrane units requ... [more]

State-of-Art Review of NO Reduction Technologies by CO, CH4 and H2
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: carbon monoxide, catalyst, Hydrogen, methane, NO reduction
Removal of nitrogen oxides during coal combustion is a subject of great concerns. The present study reviews the state-of-art catalysts for NO reduction by CO, CH4, and H2. In terms of NO reduction by CO and CH4, it focuses on the preparation methodologies and catalytic properties of noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal catalysts. In the technology of NO removal by H2, the NO removal performance of the noble metal catalyst is mainly discussed from the traditional carrier and the new carrier, such as Al2O3, ZSM-5, OMS-2, MOFs, perovskite oxide, etc. By adopting new preparation methodologies and introducing the secondary metal component, the catalysts supported by a traditional carrier could achieve a much higher activity. New carrier for catalyst design seems a promising aspect for improving the catalyst performance, i.e., catalytic activity and stability, in future. Moreover, mechanisms of catalytic NO reduction by these three agents are discussed in-depth. Through the critical rev... [more]

Indirect Monitoring of Anaerobic Digestion for Cheese Whey Treatment
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, fractal analysis, indirect monitoring, observability index, observer design
Efficient monitoring is an open problem in the operation of anaerobic digestion processes, due to the lack of accurate, low-cost, and proper sensors for the on-line monitoring of key process variables. This paper presents two approaches for the indirect monitoring of the anaerobic digestion of cheese whey wastewater. First, the observability property is addressed using conventional and nonconventional techniques, including an observability index. Then, two model-based observer techniques, an extended Luenberger observer, a sliding mode observer, and a data-driven technique based on fractal analysis are formulated and discussed. The performance and capabilities of the proposed methodologies are illustrated on a validated model with experimental data of the anaerobic digestion of cheese whey. Experimental pH measurements are used for the data-driven approach based on fractal analysis. The experimental data sets correspond to experimental conditions (pH > 7.5 and temperature (T) = 40 °C)... [more]

Effect of Aspect Ratio on the Mixing Performance in the Kenics Static Mixer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aspect ratio, coefficient of variation, continuous manufacturing, kenics static mixer, scale-up
Continuous manufacturing has received increasing interest because of the advantages of intrinsic safety and enhanced mass transfer in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the difficulty for scale-up has limited the application of continuous manufacturing for a long time. Recently, the tubular flow reactor equipped with the Kenics static mixer appears to be a solution for the continuous process scale-up. Although many influence factors on the mixing performance in the Kenics static mixer have been investigated, little research has been carried out on the aspect ratio. In this study, we used the coefficient of variation as the mixing evaluation index to investigate the effect of the aspect ratio (0.2−2) on the Kenics static mixer’s mixing performance. The results indicate that a low aspect ratio helps obtain a shorter mixing time and mixer length. This study suggests that adjusting the aspect ratio of the Kenics static mixer can be a new strategy for the scale-up of a continuous process... [more]

Keywords: 2-butyl-1-octanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 2-octanol, 3,7-dimethyl-3-octanol, boric acid, boron, monohydric alcohols, n-octanol, salting-out agent, separation, solvent extraction
Solvent extraction is one of the common methods for the recovery of boric acid (or boron) from aqueous solutions. A wide variety of different compounds including monohydric alcohols has been tested, and there is wide recognition that they are rather ineffective compared to other extractants such as diols. Nevertheless, monohydric alcohols find application in industrial processes, demonstrating their efficiency. The intention of this study is to clarify this discrepancy and to provide an overall picture of monohydric alcohols as an extractant for boric acid. Five different monohydric alcohols are the object of this study: n-octanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 2-butyl-1-octanol, 2-octanol and 3,7-dimethyl-3-octanol. A special focus of this work is the examination of the effect of the structure of the carbon chain and the effect of the composition of the aqueous phase on the extraction efficiency. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: activation, conveying bed, desulfurization, digestion, high-sulfur bauxite, roasting
A new roasting process with a conveying bed was constructed and used to remove sulfur of high-sulfur bauxite. Roasting temperature, phase transformation, microcrystal, specific surface area of high-sulfur bauxite, and the mechanism of the reaction during the roasting process were analyzed. The digestion properties of roasted bauxite were also investigated. The results showed that the sulfur in high-sulfur bauxite can be efficiently removed by roasting in the conveying bed at 520−720 °C for 2 s. Major reactions of high-sulfur bauxite during roasting were the dehydration of minerals, desulfurization of pyrite, sulfation of SO2, and decomposition of sulfate. The rate of mineral dehydration reaction was significantly slower than that of the desulfurization reaction. The specific surface area of roasted ore greatly increased, and the microcrystal of Al-O mineral was refined, which was conducive to Al2O3 digestion. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aerobic granular sludge, bioreactor, diameter, oversize, Wastewater
Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) with oversized diameter commonly affects its stability and pollutant removal. In order to effectively restrict the particle size of AGS, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with a spiny aeration device was put forward. A conventional SBR (R1) and an SBR (R2) with the spiny aeration device treating tannery wastewater were compared in the laboratory. The result indicates that the size of the granular sludge from R2 was smaller than that from R1 with sludge granulation. The spines and air bubbles could effectively restrict the particle size of AGS by collision and abrasion. Nevertheless, there was no significant change in mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and the sludge volume index (SVI) in either bioreactors. The removal (%) of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) in these two bioreactors did not differ from each other greatly. Change in Mixing Power of a Two-PBT Impeller When Emptying a Tank
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial impeller, increase of power consumption, tank emptying
The paper presents research on the phenomenon of an increase in mixing power during the emptying of a tank with two 6-PBT45° axial impellers in operation, located on a common shaft, pumping the liquid to the bottom of the mixing tank. A large increase in mixing power took place when the free surface of the liquid was just above the upper edge of one of the impellers (hp/D < 0.1). This increase was even more than 50% compared to the design power for a fully filled mixing vessel. Admittedly, high motor overload, while not very long, may damage it. The study investigated the instantaneous torques acting on the impeller shaft during the emptying of the tank and the velocity distributions in planes r-z. On their basis, the mechanism of the phenomenon observed was determined and correlation relationships were given that permitted the calculation of the numerical values of the power increase factors.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: borondipyrromethene, Förster resonance energy transfer, porphyrin, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy
Meso-substituted borondipyrromethene (BODIPY)-porphyrin compounds that include free base porphyrin with two different numbers of BODIPY groups (BDP-TTP and 3BDP-TTP) were designed and synthesized to analyze intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms of meso-substituted BODIPY-porphyrin dyads and the effect of the different numbers of BODIPY groups connected to free-base porphyrin on the energy transfer mechanism. Absorption spectra of BODIPY-porphyrin conjugates showed wide absorption features in the visible region, and that is highly valuable to increase light-harvesting efficiency. Fluorescence spectra of the studied compounds proved that BODIPY emission intensity decreased upon the photoexcitation of the BODIPY core, due to the energy transfer from BODIPY unit to porphyrin. In addition, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy measurements indicated that the energy transfer of the 3BDP-TTP compound (about 3 ps) is faster than the BDP-TTP compound (about 22 ps).
