March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-oil, biocrude, biorefinery, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrotreatment, lignocellulosic, pyrolysis, supercritical CO2, supercritical extraction, upgrading
Bio-oils derived from the thermochemical processing of lignocellulosic biomass are recognized as a promising platform for sustainable biofuels and chemicals. While significant advances have been achieved with regard to the production of bio-oils by hydrothermal liquefaction and pyrolysis, the need for improving their physicochemical properties (fuel upgrading) or for recovering valuable chemicals is currently shifting the research focus towards downstream separation and chemical upgrading. The separation of lignocellulosic bio-oils using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) as a solvent is a promising environmentally benign process that can play a key role in the design of innovative processes for their valorization. In the last decade, fundamental research has provided knowledge on supercritical extraction of bio-oils. This review provides an update on the progress of the research in sCO2 separation of lignocellulosic bio-oils, together with a critical interpretation of the observed ef... [more]
Techno-Economic Optimization of an Off-Grid Solar/Wind/Battery Hybrid System with a Novel Multi-Objective Differential Evolution Algorithm
Yong Yang, Rong Li
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decomposition, differential evolution, hybrid energy system, parameter adaptive mechanism, techno-economic optimization
Techno-economic optimization of a standalone solar/wind/battery hybrid system located in Xining, China, is the focus of this paper, and reliable and economic indicators are simultaneously employed to address the problem. To obtain a more precise Pareto set, a novel multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is proposed, where differential evolution with a parameter-adaptive mechanism is applied in the decomposition framework. The algorithm effectiveness is verified by performance comparisons on the benchmark test problems with two reference algorithms: a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm and a multi-objective evolution algorithm based on decomposition. The applicability of the proposed algorithm for the capacity-optimization problem is also validated by comparisons with the same reference algorithms above, where the true Pareto set of the problem is approximated by combining of the three algorithms through the non-dominant relationship. The results show the proposed algorit... [more]
A Field Experiment on Wave Forces on an Energy-Absorbing Breakwater
Pasquale G. F. Filianoti, Luana Gurnari
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: absorption coefficient, caisson breakwater, field experiment, Goda’s formula, Oscillating Water Column, pressure distribution, wave loads
The U-OWC is a caisson breakwater embodying a device for wave energy absorption. Under the wave action, the pressure acting on the upper opening of the vertical duct fluctuates, producing a water discharge alternatively entering/exiting the plant through the U-duct, formed by the duct and the chamber. The interaction between incoming waves and the water discharge alters the wave pressure distribution along the wave-beaten wall of this breakwater compared with the pressure distributions on a vertical pure reflecting wall. As a consequence, the horizontal wave forces produced on the breakwater are also different. A small scale U-OWC breakwater was put off the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina (Southern Italy) to measure the horizontal wave force. Experimental results were compared with Boccotti’s and Goda’s wave pressure formulas, carried out for conventional upright breakwaters, to check their applicability on the U-OWC breakwaters. Both models are suitable for design of U-OWC brea... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-products, Biomass, biorefinery, lignocellulose, microalgae, process design, proteins, waste
In this review, we focus on the literature that described the various unit operations in a process design flowsheet of biorefineries. We begin by establishing the accepted definitions of a biorefinery, go on to describe how to categorize biorefineries, and finally review the literature on biorefinery process designs by listing the unit operation in each process design. Distinguishing biorefineries based on feedstock, the types of processing units, and the products emanating from the biorefinery are discussed.

Roman Gozdur, Piotr Gębara, Krzysztof Chwastek
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: composites, hysteresis loops, temperature effect
In the present paper, the effect of temperature on the shape of magnetic hysteresis loops for a magnetocaloric composite core was studied. The composite core, based on La(Fe, Mn, Si)13-H, was set up using three component disks with different Curie temperatures. The magnetic properties of the components and the outcome composite core were determined using a self-developed measurement setup. For the description of hysteresis loops, the phenomenological T(x) model was used. The presented methodology might be useful for the designers of magnetic active regenerators.

Keywords: low sulfur fuels, machinery system optimization, organic Rankine cycle, predictive model, regression model, ship, techno-economic feasibility, waste heat recovery
When considering waste heat recovery systems for marine applications, which are estimated to be suitable to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions up to 20%, the use of organic Rankine cycle power systems has been proven to lead to higher savings compared to the traditional steam Rankine cycle. However, current methods to estimate the techno-economic feasibility of such a system are complex, computationally expensive and require significant specialized knowledge. This is the first article that presents a simplified method to carry out feasibility analyses for the implementation of organic Rankine cycle waste heat recovery units on board vessels using low-sulfur fuels. The method consists of a set of regression curves derived from a synthetic dataset obtained by evaluating the performance of organic Rankine cycle systems over a wide range of design and operating conditions. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated by comparing its estimations with the ones attained using thermodyna... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acclimatization, ammonia, biogas, inhibition, methane, trace elements
The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of different nitrogen increase rates in feedstock on the process stability and conversion efficiency in anaerobic digestion (AD). The research was conducted in continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR), initially filled with two different inocula: inocula #1 with low and #2 with high nitrogen (N) concentrations. Three N feeding regimes were investigated: the “0-increase” feeding regime with a constant N amount in feeding and the regimes “0.25-increase” and “0.5-increase” where the N concentrations in feedstock were raised by 0.25 and 0.5 g·kg−1, respectively, related to fresh matter (FM) every second week. The N concentration inside the reactors increased according to the feeding regimes. The levels of inhibition (Inhibition) in specific methane yields (SMY), related to the conversion efficiency of the substrates, were quantified. At the N concentration in digestate of 10.82 ± 0.52 g·kg−1 FM measured in the reactors with inoculum #2 and “... [more]

Keywords: high power density, more electric aircraft (MEA), multilevel converter
Higher-voltage-standard and higher-power-rating aerospace power systems are being investigated intensively in the aerospace industry to address challenges in terms of improving emissions, fuel economy, and also cost. Multilevel converter topologies become attractive because of their higher efficiency under high-voltage and high-switching-frequency conditions. In this paper, an asymmetrical-voltage-level back-to-back multilevel converter is proposed, which consists of a five-level (5L) rectifier stage and a three-level (3L) inverter stage. Based on the comparison, such an asymmetrical back-to-back structure can achieve high efficiency and minimize the converter weight on both rectifier and inverter sides. A compact triple-surface-mounted heatsink structure is designed to realize high density and manufacturable thermal management. This topology and structure are evaluated with a full-rating prototype. According to the evaluation, the achieved power density is 2.61 kVA/kg, which is 30% hi... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active cooling, AR-CCPC, solar concentrator, thermal analysis
This paper presents the experimental investigation of a novel cross-compound parabolic concentrator (CCPC). For the first time, a CCPC module was designed to simultaneously work as an electricity generator and collect the thermal energy present in the module which is generated due to the incident irradiation. This CCPC module consists of two regions: an absorber surface atop the rig and a reflective region below that to reflect the irradiation onto the photovoltaic (PV) cell, coupled together to form an absorptive/reflective CCPC (AR-CCPC) module. A major issue in the use of PV cells is the decrease in electrical conversion efficiency with the increase in cell temperature. This module employs an active cooling system to decrease the PV cell temperature, optimizing the electrical performance and absorbing the heat generated within the module. This system was found to have an overall efficiency of 63%, which comprises the summation of the electrical and thermal efficiency posed by the AR... [more]

Roberto Bruno, Piero Bevilacqua, Cristina Carpino, Natale Arcuri
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BEopt, building design, cost-optimal analysis, economic projections
Cost-optimal analysis was pointed out in the 2010/31 European Directive as a tool to evaluate the achievable building energy performance levels as a function of the corresponding costs. These analyses can be carried out by a financial projection for private investors and a macroeconomic approach to establish the minimal energy performance levels. Consequently, the financial projection provides different results that could stimulate private investors toward other cost-optimal solutions that do not match the minimal energy performance levels. For this purpose, both the projections were analyzed in the BEopt environment, developed by NREL, on a multistory building located in two contrasting climatic zones of the Mediterranean area, one cold and the other warm, highlighting the differences. The cost-optimal solutions were identified by a parametric study involving measures that affect thermal losses and solar gains, whereas the air-conditioning plant was left unchanged in order to include... Keywords: ejector structure, entrainment ratio, spray characteristics, two-phase ejectors, visualization
A two-phase flow ejector is an important part of a water mist fire suppression system, and these devices have become a popular research topic in recent years. This paper proposes a supersonic ejector that aims to improve the efficiency of water mist fire suppression systems. The effects of ejector geometric parameters on the entrainment ratio (ER) were explored. The effects of primary flow pressure (PP) on the mixing process and flow phenomena were studied by a high-speed camera. The experimental results show that the ER first increases and then decreases with increasing PP. ER increases with increasing ejector area ratio (AR). The PP corresponding to the maximum ER of ejectors with a different nozzle exit position (NXP) is 3.6 bar. The ejector with an NXP of +1 and AR of 6 demonstrate the best performance, and the ER of this ejector reaches 36.29. The spray half-cone angle of the ejector increases with increasing ER, reaching a maximum value of 7.07°. The unstable atomization half-con... [more]

Keywords: axial-flux machines, design of electric drives, modular construction, soft magnetic composites, switched reluctance machines
Nowadays, there is a renewed interest in switched reluctance machines and especially in axial-flux switched reluctance machines (AFSRM). This paper presents a comprehensive design procedure for modular AFSRM with an inner stator and two exterior rotors that have a new distribution of the stator and rotor poles, resulting in short magnetic paths with no flux reversal. After a description of the proposed machine, the output torque equation is derived from a simplified non-linear energy conversion loop and guidelines for its design are given. Once the preliminary sizing has been carried out the different modules of the AFSRM, the magnetically active parts made with SMC, are reshaped or refined using 3D printing and 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis until they reach their definitive shape and dimensions. Finally, an AFSRM has been built following the proposed design procedure and has been validated by experimental measurements.

Keywords: joining, power density, skutterudite, specific contact resistance, tubular thermoelectric generator (TTEG)
The conversion efficiency of the thermoelectric generator (TEG) is adversely affected by the quality of thermal contact between the module and the heat source. TEGs with the planar substrate are not suitable for the curved heat sources. Several attempts have been made to tackle this issue by fabricating complex tubular-shaped TEGs; however, all efforts have been limited to low-temperature applications. Furthermore, the electrical contact resistance of the module is critical to achieving a high-power output. In this work, we developed the tubular TEG with significantly low specific contact resistance by optimizing the joining process. We show that the modified resistance welding (MRW) performed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) is an efficient joining method for the fabrication of the TE module, with high feasibility and scalability. This research seeks to suggest important design rules to consider when fabricating TEGs.

Keywords: annual energy production, CECO, mooring system, offshore structure, sloped WEC, spar, tension leg platform, Wave Energy
Offshore locations present significant amounts of wave energy and free sea space, which could facilitate the deployment of larger numbers of wave energy converters (WECs) in comparison with nearshore regions. The present study aims to find a suitable design for an offshore floating version of CECO, a sloped motion WEC. For this purpose, a new design methodology is proposed in this paper for identifying and assessing possible floating configurations of CECO, which consists of four distinct set-ups obtained by varying the type of main supporting structure and the mooring system. Two options are based on spar designs and the other two on tension leg platform (TLP) designs. Based on outcomes of time-domain numerical calculations, the aforementioned configurations were assessed in terms of annual wave energy conversion and magnitude of mooring loads. Results indicate that a TLP configuration with an innovative mooring solution could increase the annual energy production by 40% with respect... [more]

Keywords: agents, auction, bidding, community energy markets, Energy Storage, energy trading, smart grid
Community Energy Markets (CEMs) enable trading opportunities between participants in a community to achieve savings and profits. However, the market design and the behaviour of participants are key factors that determine the success of such markets. To this end, this research presents a CEM model and conducts agent-based simulations to study the benefits of the CEM to consumers and prosumers. The proposed market structure is an hour-ahead periodic double auction. In particular, market rules are proposed that incentivise the provision of energy supply to the community and the investment in energy storage. Furthermore, a trading strategy is introduced that leverages energy flexibility created by the storage devices. Finally, as well as the hour-ahead market, we include a minute-by-minute balancing as part of the CEM’s energy exchange mechanism. The balancing approach is introduced to account for a community budget deficit caused by the time difference between supply and demand. The propo... [more]

Hanyoung Bu, Younghoon Cho
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dv/dt, dv/dt filter, GaN HEMT, gate driver, leakage current, matrix converter, parasitic inductance, sine-wave filter
This paper introduces a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT)-based matrix converter for motor friendly drive systems. A fast switching characteristic of the GaN devices causes high dv/dt. This increases the importance of noise immunity and the reduction of parasitic components in system design. In addition, the high dv/dt in motor drive systems leads to voltage spike at a motor input terminal and leakage current through a motor chassis. Accordingly, a gate drive circuit consists of devices with a high common mode transient immunity. A printed circuit board was designed to minimize parasitic inductance, which was analyzed by performing simulations. To mitigate the dv/dt of the voltage applied to the motor and the leakage current, a dv/dt filter and a sine-wave filter were utilized as an output filter of the matrix converter. The effectiveness of each filter was verified by driving an induction motor.

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aero-fuel centrifugal pump, combination impeller, flow characteristics, flow loss, head and efficiency
Aero-fuel centrifugal pumps are important power plants in aero-engines. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps, a combination impeller is integrated with the pump to improve performance. First, the critical geometrical parameters of the combination impeller and volute are given. Then, the effects of the combination impeller on the flow characteristics of the impeller and volute are clarified by comparing simulation results with that of the conventional impeller, where the effectiveness of the selected numerical method is validated by an acceptable agreement between simulation and experiment. Finally, the experiment is set to test the external performance of the studied pump. A significant feature of this study is that the flow characteristics are significantly ameliorated by reducing the flow losses that emerged in the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and volute tongue. Correspondingly, the head and efficiency of a combination impeller are higher with comparison to a conventiona... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic coils, magnetic manipulation, Micro-/Nano-robots
Untethered nano-/microrobots have been appealing to biomedical applications under magnetic guidance. Numerous actuation systems are specifically designed to generate either uniform or non-uniform fields which are unable to support all actuating mechanisms of magnetic robots. The size of their accessible space does not enable applications in life sciences (e.g., placing around human parts for tasks or an in vivo experiment in animals). Moreover, homogeneity of uniform magnetic fields is limited in a small region. Here, we propose an electromagnetic coil system that is optimally designed based on numerical simulation investigations to derestrict the mentioned constraints. The built-up system provides a large bore in which magnetic field generation by passing a 10 A current is strong enough for nano-/micromanipulation switchable between uniformity in a large-homogeneous region about 50-mm-wide along the x- and y-axes and 80-mm-wide along the z-axis, and with a non-uniformity of about 12 m... Keywords: density, design, die, durability, pellets, refuse-derived fuel, refuse-derived fuel (RDF)
Increasing production of waste has compelled the development of modern technologies for waste management. Certain fractions of municipal solid wastes are not suitable for recycling and must be utilised in other ways. Materials such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) fractions are used as fuel in cement or CHP (combined heat and power) plants. The low bulk density leads to many problems pertaining to transportation and storage. In the case of biomass, these problems cause reduction in pelletisation. This paper therefore presents a comprehensive study on RDF pellet production, which is divided into three major areas. The first describes laboratory-scale tests and provides information on key factors that affect pellet quality (e.g., density and durability). Based on this, the second part presents a design of modified RDF dies to form RDF pellets, which are then tested via a semi-professional line test. The results show that RDF fraction can be compacted to form pellets using conventional device... [more]

Keywords: air chamber, analytical study, dual cylindrical caisson, oscillating water column, Wave Energy
A fixed dual cylindrical oscillating water column (OWC) acting as a breakwater-type wave energy converter (WEC) is proposed to harvest the wave energy effectively for shallow offshore sites. An analytical model is developed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics and the energy capture capacity of the cylindrical OWC device in severe waves. Based on the linear potential flow theory, the analytical solutions of the velocity potential in diffraction mode are solved by matching the Eigen-function expansion technique, and the continuous conditions of the velocity potential and fluid velocity between the computational sub-domains are involved in solving the problem for determining a solution. The proposed model is verified against the published data. The effects of the wave height, the angle of chamber clapboard and the radius of the inner and outer cylindrical column on the energy conversion efficiency are investigated in this paper. To improve the energy conversion performance and... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: isolation dc-dc converter, LLC resonant converter, series-connected devices, solid-state-transformer (SST)
This paper describes the design of a Series-Connected Device based on a fixed−frequency LLC resonant converter (SCDLLC). Isolation of the dc-dc converter like the LLC resonant converter is used for the stability of the high voltage system such as a solid-state-transformer (SST). The series-connected devices driving method is one of the methods applicable to a high voltage system. When driving series-connected devices, an auxiliary circuit for voltage balancing between series-connected devices is required, which can be simply implemented using a passive element. In this paper, LLC converter design with balancing circuits configured in parallel with a device is provided, and both the simulations and experiments were performed.
