Analysis and Design of Innovative Magnetic Wedges for High Efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines
Lucia Frosini, Marco Pastura
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless drive, efficiency, industrial application, permanent magnet motor, synchronous motor
The global decarbonization targets require increasingly higher levels of efficiency from the designers of electrical machines. In this context, the opportunity to employ magnetic or semi-magnetic wedges in surface-mounted permanent magnet machines with fractional-slot concentrated winding has been evaluated in this paper, with the aim to reduce the power losses, especially in the magnets. Since an analytical calculation is not sufficient for this evaluation, finite element methods with two different software have been employed, by using a model experimentally validated on a real motor. The effects of wedges with different values of permeability and different magnetization characteristics have been evaluated on flux density, back electromotive force, and inductances, in order to choose the more suitable wedge for the considered motor. Furthermore, a new wedge consisting of different portions of materials with different magnetic permeability values is proposed. The effects of both conven... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid WEC, oscillating water column, overtopping device, physical modeling
Seaports are highly energy demanding infrastructures and are exposed to wave energy, which is an abundant resource and largely unexploited. As a result, there has been a rising interest in integrating wave energy converters (WEC) into the breakwaters of seaports. The present work analyzes the performance of an innovative hybrid WEC module combining an oscillating water column (OWC) and an overtopping device (OWEC) integrated into a rubble mound breakwater, based on results of a physical model study carried out at a geometrical scale of 1:50. Before the experimental tests, the device’s performance was numerically optimized using ANSYS Fluent and WOPSim v3.11. The wave power captured by the hybrid WEC was calculated and the performance of the two harvesting principles discussed. It was demonstrated that hybridization could lead to systems with higher efficiencies than its individual components, for a broader range of wave conditions. The chosen concepts were found to complement each othe... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coordinated protections, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable, protective relays
The uses of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables pose a challenge of power system protection since the impedance of the HTS cable is varied during fault conditions. The protection systems should be designed properly to ensure the reliability and stability of the whole system. This paper presents a fault analysis of the co-axial HTS cable in the mesh system and proposes a coordinated protection system. In the proposed protection system, the main protection is the differential current relay whereas the backup protections are the overcurrent and directional overcurrent relays. The normal and abnormal relay operations are considered to analyze the transient fault current in the HTS cable and evaluate the performance of the proposed coordinated protection system. Characteristics of cable impedances and temperatures under various fault conditions are presented. The proposed protection scheme is validated by the simulation in the PSCAD/EMTDC program. Simulation results show that the... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavity-based combustion, hydrogen combustion, scramjet combustor, supersonic combustion
Supersonic combustion experiments were performed using three different hydrogen fuel-injection configurations in a cavity-based model scramjet combustor with various global fuel−air equivalence ratios. The configurations tested were angled injection at 15° to the flow direction upstream of the cavity, parallel injection from the front step, and upstream injection from the rear ramp. Planar laser-induced fluorescence of the hydroxyl radical and time-resolved pressure measurements were used to investigate the flow characteristics. Angled injection generated a weak bow shock in front of the injector and recirculation zone to maintain the combustion as the equivalence ratio increased. Parallel and upstream injections both showed similar flame structure over the cavity at low equivalence ratio. Upstream injection enhanced the fuel diffusion and enabled ignition with a shorter delay length than with parallel injection. The presence of a flame near the cavity was determined while varying the... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cumulative-exergy consumption minimisation, energy systems optimisation, energy-system design, exergy analysis, multi-energy systems, municipal energy systems
In developed countries like Austria the renewable energy potential might outpace the demand. This requires primary energy efficiency measures as well as an energy system design that enables the integration of variable renewable energy sources. Municipal energy systems, which supply customers with heat and electricity, will play an important role in this task. The cumulative exergy consumption methodology considers resource consumption from the raw material to the final product. It includes the exergetic expenses for imported energy as well as for building the energy infrastructure. In this paper, we determine the exergy optimal energy system design of an exemplary municipal energy system by using cumulative exergy consumption minimisation. The results of a case study show that well a linked electricity and heat system using heat pumps, combined heat power plants and battery and thermal storages is necessary. This enables an efficient supply and also provides the necessary flexibilities... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal pump, flow characteristic, gas entrainment, handing capability, two-phase flow model
Capability for handling entrained gas is an important design consideration for centrifugal pumps used in petroleum, chemistry, nuclear applications. An experimental evaluation on their two phase performance is presented for two centrifugal pumps working under air-water mixture fluid conditions. The geometries of the two pumps are designed for the same flow rate and shut off head coefficient with the same impeller rotational speed. Overal pump performance and unsteady pressure pulsation information are obtained at different rotational speeds combined with various inlet air void fractions (α0) up to pump stop condition. As seen from the test results, pump 2 is able to deliver up to 10% two-phase mixtures before pump shut-off, whereas pump 1 is limited to 8%. In order to understand the physics of this flow phenomenon, a full three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (3D-URANS) calculation using the Euler−Euler inhomogeneous method are carried out to study the two phase flo... March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Industry 4.0, IWS, mining locomotives, Piezoelectric Micro Generator, vibration energy
This paper will present a complete discussion in recent design strategies for harvesting vibration energy using piezoelectric cantilever transducers. The interest in this primary energy source is due to its presence in non-negligible quantities in most of the engines used in the industrial process. Previous work has shown that it is possible to harvest significant amounts of energy capable of supplying a wireless sensor (WS) node. However, in most research, only one step of the energy conversion and utilization chain is studied. Starting from the definition of the different design issues for a piezoelectric micro generator (PMG), the leading optimization solutions will be reviewed in this paper. Based on the findings, the quantification of the data transmission range of wireless sensor nodes powered by a PMG is proposed to support the objectives envisioned by Industry 4.0. The vibration characteristics taken from mining locomotives that have not yet been treated previously are used to... [more]

Keywords: support vector regression (SVR), thermal resistance, utility boiler, wavelet threshold denoising algorithm
Depending on its operating conditions, traditional soot blowing is activated for a fixed time. However, low-frequency soot blowing can cause heat transfer efficiency to decrease. High-frequency soot blowing not only wastes high-pressure steam, but also abrades surface pipes, reducing the working life of a heat exchange device. Therefore, it is necessary to design an online ash fouling monitoring system to perform soot blowing that is dependent on the status of ash accumulation. This study presents an online monitoring model of ash-layer thermal resistance that reflects the degree of ash fouling. A wavelet threshold denoising algorithm was applied to smooth the thermal resistance of the ash layer calculated by the heat balance mechanism model. Thus, the variation in thermal resistance becomes more visible, which is more conducive to optimizing the operation of soot blowing. The designed Support Vector Regression (SVR) model could achieve the online prediction of thermal resistance denoi... [more]

Keywords: applicability evaluation, cloud model, data envelopment analysis (DEA), retail electricity market, retail electricity price package
With the reform of the power system, the retail electricity market in China has gradually been liberalized. The mechanism of freely selling electricity have been set up. To grab market share and increase profits, electricity retail companies have introduced a series of retail electricity price packages. To evaluate the applicability of these retail electricity price packages, an adaptive evaluation index system that takes into account the interests of both the power company and the users is first established. Furthermore, an integrated evaluation model that combines data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the cloud model is proposed. In this model, DEA is used to process quantitative indicators and the cloud model is employed to quantify qualitative problems. A case study of Tianjin is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed evaluation system and model. The empirical study shows that qualitative indicators can also affect the applicability of the retail electricity price pack... [more]

Keywords: adaptation, grid-connected inverter, parameters integration design method, weak grid
To improve the robustness of grid-connected inverter against grid impedance in a weak grid an integrated design method of LCL-filter parameters and controller parameters is proposed. In the method the inherent relation of LCL-filter parameters and controller parameters is taken into consideration to realize their optimized match. A parameter normalization scheme is also developed to facilitate the system stability and robustness analysis. Based on the method all normalization parameters can be designed succinctly according to the required stability and robustness. Additionally, the LCL parameter and controller parameter can be achieved immediately by restoring normalization parameters. The proposed design method can guarantee the inverter stability and robustness simultaneously without needing any compensation network, additional hardware, or the complicated iterative computations which cannot be avoided for the conventional inverter design method. Keywords: critical speed, eddy current braking, finite element verification, high-speed maglev, peak braking force, subdomain method
In the eddy current braking system of high-speed maglev, the peak braking force and the critical speed are key factors determining the performance of eddy current braking force. In this paper, the analytical formula of eddy current braking force is derived by a subdomain method considering the skin effect of the induction plate, and, subsequently, the characteristics of peak braking force and critical speed are analyzed. The analytical model is set up in a 2D Cartesian coordinate system. The Poisson equations in each subdomain are listed by treating the vector magnetic potential as a variable. By combining the boundary conditions between two adjacent subdomains, the expressions of eddy current density and magnetic density in the induction plate are obtained. Then, the analytical formula of the eddy current braking force is obtained by the Ampere force formula. The results of finite-element analysis confirm the validity of the analytical calculation. The methods of improving the perform... [more]

Keywords: dynamic prediction model, mining model, protection rock pillar size, thick soil and thin rock strata, vertical shaft deflection
To prevent serious shaft deflection disasters under asymmetric mining conditions, it is urgent to solve the problem of designing shaft protection rock pillar (SPRP) sizes in thick soil and thin rock strata. In this paper, based on the parallel mining model and the perpendicular mining model, a dynamic prediction model that can describe the horizontal movement of the shaft was established by the probability integration method and the Knothe time function. Next, according to the measured data of the shaft deflection in the Guotun Coal Mine, a back analysis was used to calculate the prediction parameters that were suitable for the deep soil strata. Based on the mining model, the variation law of the horizontal deflection displacement of the shaft and SPRP size was obtained. The results showed that the final displacements of the shaft under the two ideal mining models were equal, while the parallel mining model was superior to the perpendicular mining model at the initial stage of mining.... Keywords: FEM, grading capacitor, multi-break, stray capacitance, vacuum circuit breaker, voltage distribution
A balanced voltage distribution for each break is required for normal operation of a multi-break vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) This paper presented a novel 363 kV/5000 A/63 kA sextuple-break VCB with a series-parallel structure. To determine the static voltage distribution of each break, a 3D finite element method (FEM) model was established to calculate the voltage distribution and the electric field of each break at the fully open state. Our results showed that the applied voltage was unevenly distributed at each break, and that the first break shared the most voltage, about 86.3%. The maximum electric field of the first break was 18.9 kV/mm, which contributed to the reduction of the breaking capacity. The distributed and stray capacitance parameters of the proposed structure were calculated based on the FEM model. According to the distributed capacitance parameters, the equivalent circuit simulation model of the static voltage distribution of this 363 kV VCB was established in PSCAD.... [more]

The paper presents a comparative study of two solar string inverters based on the Quasi-Z-Source (QZS) network. The first solution comprises a full-SiC two-level QZS inverter, while the second design was built based on a three-level neutral-point-clamped QZS inverter with Silicon based Metal−Oxide−Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (Si MOSFETs). Several criteria were taken into consideration: the size of passive elements, thermal design and size of heatsinks, voltage stress across semiconductors, and efficiency investigation. The Photovoltaic (PV)-string rated at 1.8 kW power was selected as a case study system. The advantages and drawbacks of both solutions are presented along with conclusions.

The design of ground source heat pumps is a fundamental step to ensure the high energy efficiency of heat pump systems throughout their operating years. To enhance the diffusion of ground source heat pump systems, two different tools are developed in the H2020 research project named, “Cheap GSHPs”: A design tool and a decision support system. In both cases, the energy demand of the buildings may not be calculated by the user. The main input data, to evaluate the size of the borehole heat exchangers, is the building energy demand. This paper presents a methodology to correlate energy demand, building typologies, and climatic conditions for different types of residential buildings. Rather than envelope properties, three insulation levels have been considered in different climatic conditions to set up a database of energy profiles. Analyzing European climatic test reference years, 23 locations have been considered. For each location, the overall energy and the mean hourly monthly energy p... [more]
PSO-Algorithm-Based Optimal Design of LCLC Resonant Converters for Space Travelling-Wave Tube Amplifiers Applications
Bin Zhao, Gang Wang
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LCLC resonant converter, optimal design method, PSO algorithm, space travelling-wave tube Amplifiers, total power loss
Due to the advantages of zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) and zero-current-switching (ZCS), LCLC resonant converters are universally applied in two-stage electronic power conditioners (EPCs) of space travelling-wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs). In two-stage EPCs, as the output voltage is regulated by the first stage, the main functions of LCLC resonant converters are to boost the input voltage, provide galvanic isolation, and maintain high efficiency. However, the total power loss of an LCLC resonant converter is very challenging because of the multiple resonant components and their mutual couplings. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)-algorithm-based, efficiency-oriented optimal design method of an LCLC resonant converter is proposed. Based on an analysis of working principles, the total power loss (with consideration of all the power losses, including the driving loss and the conduction loss of the main switches), transformer loss, and power los... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, forward-skewed blades, through flow, variable-pitch axial fan
For a single-stage variable-pitch axial fan, the aerodynamic performance and through flow with and without blade skewing are examined numerically. Simulated results show that the total pressure rise and efficiency increase by 2.99% and 0.16%, respectively, with the best forward-skewed angle of θ = 3° at the design conditions. At the blade pitch angles of β = 29° and 35°, the total pressure rises and efficiency of the fan with θ = 3.0° under the highest efficiency point change by −0.55%, −0.53% and 1.39%, 2.11%, respectively. At design and off-design conditions, the forward-skewed blades mitigate tip leakage and delay the emergence of separation flow at the blade root, these benefits are higher at the higher blade pitch angle. The θ = 3.0° forward skew effectively raises the stage performance of the impeller and guide vanes.

Keywords: automobile cabin, energy saving, parking ventilation, regional air-conditioning
With the goal of increasing energy efficiency and passenger comfort in an automobile cabin, we developed a regional air-conditioning design to control cold air in specific regions, and an air management strategy that can keep air circulation when the car engine cuts out. According to computational simulations, an air velocity of 2 m/s was adopted, which could form an independent flow field space in the cabin with a temperature gap of 7 °C according to the user’s needs. The designed regional air-conditioning and circulation system could create independent flow field spaces with temperature differences. Inlet air volume demand was also reduced by 60% and blower power by 53 W. In addition, the cabin ventilation system led air exchange rate reached 89% per hour. In 20 min of exposure under sun, the system could lower the cabin temperature by 12.3 °C.

Keywords: gas permeability measurement, high pressure and low flowrate, Klinkenberg slippage theory, tight gas reservoirs
The Klinkenberg slippage theory has widely been used to obtain gas permeability in low-permeability porous media. However, recent research shows that there is a deviation from the Klinkenberg slippage theory for tight reservoir cores under low-pressure conditions. In this research, a new experimental device was designed to carry out the steady-state gas permeability test with high pressure and low flowrate. The results show that, unlike regular low-permeability cores, the permeability of tight cores is not a constant value, but a variate related to a fluid-dynamic parameter (flowrate). Under high-pressure conditions, the relationship between flowrate and apparent permeability of cores with low permeability is consistent with Klinkenberg slippage theory, while the relationship between flowrate and apparent permeability of tight cores is contrary to Klinkenberg slip theory. The apparent permeability of tight core increases with increasing flowrate under high-pressure conditions, and it i... [more]

Keywords: fast and flash charging, supercapacitors, urban public transportation
The last few decades have seen a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) for private and public transportation around the world. This has resulted in high power demands on the electrical grid, especially when fast and ultra-fast or flash (at the bus-stop) charging are required. Consequently, a ground storage should be used in order to mitigate the peak power request period. This paper deals with an innovative and simple fast charging infrastructure based on supercapacitors, used to charge the energy storage system on board electric buses. According to the charging level of the electric bus, the proposed fast charging system is able to provide the maximum power of 180 kW without exceeding 30 s and without using DC−DC converters. In order to limit the maximum charging current, the electric bus is charged in three steps through three different connectors placed between the supercapacitors on board the bus and the fast charging system. The fast charging system has bee... [more]

Keywords: biomass combustion, district heating network, economic analysis, flue gas condenser, hourly demand and return temperature, optimum energetic, retrofitting
Despite their obvious benefit in terms of energy efficiency and their potential benefit on pollutant emissions, Flue Gas Condensers (FGCs) are still not widely spread in biomass combustion plants. Although their costs have significantly decreased during the last decade, the economic viability of FGC retrofits is not straightforward and their return on investments is mainly dependent on the temperature of the available heat sink and the moisture content of the fuel. Based on a new techno-economic model of a FGC validated with recent industrial data, this paper presents a methodology to assess the economic viability of an FGC retrofitting in a medium-scale biomass combustion plant. The proposed methodology is applied to the case of a typical District Heating plant for which real data was collected. For the first time, the usual assumptions of constant process data generally used are challenged by considering the variability of the return temperature and heat demand over the year. Further...
