On-Line Separation and Determination of Trivalent and Hexavalent Chromium with a New Liquid Membrane Annular Contactor Coupled to Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hollow fibers, liquid membrane, pertraction, speciation analysis, toxic element
We describe a new on-line sensitive and selective procedure for the determination of trivalent and hexavalent chromium in liquid samples by a tailor-made contactor (TMC), specifically a liquid membrane annular TMC, coupled with inductively coupled plasma with optical detection. The TMC was designed and developed to integrate the extraction and stripping phases of the analyte in one module to minimize the membrane solvent’s consumption and maximize the speed of transport through the liquid membrane. Moreover, the particular geometry studied, which consists of two coaxial hollow fibers, allows the TMC to be used for both separating and preconcentrating purposes. Both (−)-N-dodecyl-N-methylephedrinium bromide (30 mM) in dichloroethane and HNO3 (0.75 M) were used as the liquid membrane and receiving solution, respectively. The proposed method’s performance was evaluated in terms of the hexavalent chromium extraction efficiency and the coefficient of variation percentages; these were higher... [more]

Hybrid Models for Efficient Control, Optimization, and Monitoring of Thermo-Chemical Processes and Plants
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), NOx reduction, numerical model, oscillating combustion
This paper describes a procedure and an IT product that combine numerical models, expert knowledge, and data-based models through artificial intelligence (AI)-based hybrid models to enable the integrated control, optimization, and monitoring of processes and plants. The working principle of the hybrid model is demonstrated by NOx reduction through guided oscillating combustion at the pulverized fuel boiler pilot incineration plant at the Institute for Technical Chemistry, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The presented example refers to coal firing, but the approach can be easily applied to any other type of nitrogen-containing solid fuel. The need for a reduction in operation and maintenance costs for biomass-fired plants is huge, especially in the frame of emission reductions and, in the case of Germany, the potential loss of funding as a result of the Renewable Energy Law (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz) for plants older than 20 years. Other social aspects, such as the departure of ex... [more]

Techno-Economic Assessment of Solar-Driven Steam Gasification of Biomass for Large-Scale Hydrogen Production
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Solar biomass gasification is an attractive pathway to promote biomass valorization while chemically storing intermittent solar energy into solar fuels. The economic feasibility of a solar gasification process at a large scale for centralized H2 production was assessed, based on the discounted cash-flow rate of return method to calculate the minimum H2 production cost. H2 production costs from solar-only, hybrid and conventional autothermal biomass gasification were evaluated under various economic scenarios. Considering a biomass reference cost of 0.1 €/kg, and a land cost of 12.9 €/m2, H2 minimum price was estimated at 2.99 €/kgH2 and 2.48 €/kgH2 for the allothermal and hybrid processes, respectively, against 2.25 €/kgH2 in the conventional process. A sensitivity study showed that a 50% reduction in the heliostats and solar tower costs, combined with a lower land cost of below 0.5 €/m2, allowed reaching an area of competitiveness where the three processes meet. Furthermore, an increa... [more]

Gasification of Biomass in Supercritical Water, Challenges for the Process Design—Lessons Learned from the Operation Experience of the First Dedicated Pilot Plant
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Biomass, gasification, process design, supercritical water
Gasification of organic matter under the conditions of supercritical water (T > 374 °C, p > 221 bar) is an allothermal, continuous flow process suitable to convert materials with high moisture content (<20 wt.% dry matter) into a combustible gas. The gasification of organic matter with water as a solvent offers several benefits, particularly the omission of an energy-intensive drying process. The reactions are fast, and mean residence times inside the reactor are consequently low (less than 5 min). However, there are still various challenges to be met. The combination of high temperature and pressure and the low concentration of organic matter require a robust process design. Additionally, the low value of the feed and the product predestinate the process for decentralized applications, which is a challenge for the economics of an application. The present contribution summarizes the experience gained during more than 10 years of operation of the first dedicated pilot plant for super... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fats and oils, lipid chemistry/lipid analysis, lipids, oilseeds, oxidative stability, processing technology, Refining
This study systematically established the most effective refining process for Moringa oleifera (MO) kernel oil. Acid degumming (20.33 ± 1.37 ppm) removed significantly greater phosphorus than water degumming (31.18 ± 0.90 ppm). Neutralization was more effective than deodorization in decreasing the acid (0.06 mg KOH/g) and p-Anisidine (p-AV, 0.36 ± 0.03) values of the oil. Besides improving its color properties, acid-activated bleaching earth Type B was better than Types A and C in decreasing the oil’s p-AV (0.43 ± 0.02), acid value (3.96 ± 0.02 mg KOH/g), and moisture content (0.01 ± 0.00% w/w). The selected refining stages successfully produced MO kernel oil with acceptable peroxide value (PV, 1.66−3.33 meq/kg), p-AV (1.05−1.49), total oxidation value (TOTOX, 4.38−8.15), acid value (0.03 mg KOH/g), moisture content (0.01% w/w), phosphorus content (1.28−1.94 ppm), iodine value (80.79−81.03), oleic acid (79.52−79.65%), and tocopherol content (65.26−87.00 mg/kg).

Defining Transmission System Operators’ Investment Shares for Phase-Shifting Transformers Used for Coordinated Redispatch
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cost-sharing, investment shares, phase shifting transformers (PSTs), redispatch, remedial actions
The implementation of network codes within the framework of European Transmission System Operators (TSOs), involves redesigning the process of executing remedial actions aimed at maintaining the power system on a daily basis. One of the key elements of this redesign is the co-optimisation of all accessible measures, bringing a cost-optimal result and providing network security for the entire Capacity Calculation Region (CCR). This specifically means that the currently installed Phase Shifting Transformers (PSTs) are expected to be utilised for the benefit of the whole CCR, with no special priority to any issues incurred by the owner. Therefore, this paper addresses any questions regarding the rules of financing (investment shares per TSO) to be applied for future PST installations. The investment shares are calculated based on the exemplary implementation of a new European procedure − cost-sharing of remedial actions. Consequently, another long-term application of this process is postu... [more]

Development of an Elevation−Fresnel Linked Mini-Heliostat Array
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: central receiver technology, linked heliostats, solar tower, solar tracking
Heliostats are critical components of solar tower technology and different strategies have been proposed to reduce their costs; among them diminishing their size to reduce wind loads or linking nearby heliostats mechanically, to reduce the overall number of actuators. This document aims to describe the development of a linked array of mini-heliostats which move together in an elevation−Fresnel configuration. This configuration consists of an array of mirrors rotating around linked parallel axes, in a linear Fresnel style with an added elevation mechanism allowing all axes to incline simultaneously in the plane North−South−Zenith; that is equivalent to an array of N linked mini-heliostats moved by only two drives instead of 2N. A detailed analytical study of the Sun-tracking performance of this kind of heliostat arrays was carried out, and an 8-mirror prototype based on optical and mechanical analyses was designed, built and tested. Even though the mirrors are flat, the array produced a... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: clamp circuit, coupled inductor, high voltage gain, SEPIC converter, voltage stress
A new non-isolated modified SEPIC front-end dc-dc converter for the low power system is proposed in this paper, and this converter is the next level of the traditional SEPIC converter with additional devices, such as two diodes and splitting of the output capacitor into two equal parts. The circuit topology proposed in this paper is formulated by combining the boost structure with the traditional SEPIC converter. Therefore, the proposed converter has the benefit of the SEPIC converter, such as continuous input current. The proposed circuit structure also improves the features, such as high voltage gain and high conversion efficiency. The converter comprises one MOSFET switch, one coupled inductor, three diodes, and two capacitors, including the output capacitor. The converter effectively recovers the leakage energy of the coupled inductor through the passive clamp circuit. The operation of the proposed converter is explained in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduct... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Kraft lignin, lignin isolation processes, lignosulfonates, technical lignin
Technologies for the isolation of lignin from pulping process streams are reviewed in this article. Based on published data, the WestVaco process, the LignoBoost process, the LigoForce SystemTM and the SLRP process are reviewed and discussed for the isolation of lignin from Kraft black liquor. The three new processes that have now joined the WestVaco process are compared from the perspective of product quality. Further, isolation processes of lignosulfonates from spent sulfite liquor are reviewed. The limitation for this review is that data are only available from lab scale and pilot scale experiments and not from industrial processes. Key output of this paper is a technology summary of the state of the art processes for technical lignins, showing the pros and cons of each process.

Effects of Geometric Parameters on the Physical Mechanisms of Supersonic Fluidic Oscillators
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: delay time, Fluid Dynamics, oscillation period, supersonic oscillator
This paper considers supersonic oscillators, in which the widths of the power nozzle and throat are the significant geometric parameters in characterizing the different internal flow characteristics. Supersonic fluidic oscillators with different power nozzle and throat widths are studied through time-dependent numerical computations. Two characteristic parameters, namely the delay time for the initiation of oscillation t0 and the oscillation period T, are selected to describe the physical mechanisms of the various oscillators. The Mach numbers and streamlines at different times are also used to investigate the flow characteristics. The results show that, when the power nozzle exit width is much smaller than the inlet width of the mixing chamber, the delay time decreases as the throat width increases. Changing the throat width of the oscillator does not significantly affect the delay time t0 when the power nozzle exit width is equal to the inlet width of the mixing chamber. The oscillat... [more]

Moisture-Safe Cold Attics in Humid Climates of Europe and North America
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cold attic, hygro-thermal, moisture-safe
During the last few decades, unheated attic spaces (so-called “cold attics”) have been one of the most moisture-problematic spaces in the building practices of Europe and North America. Problems with such spaces are usually associated with condensation, frost formation, and mould growth on the lower surfaces of the roof deck. To solve these problems, a number of qualitative studies were performed. Although these studies revealed many important pieces of information, some of them are seemingly not in accordance with one another. Therefore, there has not yet been presented cold attic design which is suitable (especially moisture-safe) for the whole target region. The aim of this paper is to determine whether such a design can be determined or state the reasons why it is not possible. Based on a review of published studies, 38 cold attic designs were selected for detailed analysis. Their comparative parameters were established, quantified, and compared. The moisture-safeness of each desig... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: carbon abatement measures, CO2 emissions, decarbonization, iron and steel industry, techno-economic pathways
The concept of techno-economic pathways is used to investigate the potential implementation of CO2 abatement measures over time towards zero-emission steelmaking in Sweden. The following mitigation measures are investigated and combined in three pathways: top gas recycling blast furnace (TGRBF); carbon capture and storage (CCS); substitution of pulverized coal injection (PCI) with biomass; hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore (H-DR); and electric arc furnace (EAF), where fossil fuels are replaced with biomass. The results show that CCS in combination with biomass substitution in the blast furnace and a replacement primary steel production plant with EAF with biomass (Pathway 1) yield CO2 emission reductions of 83% in 2045 compared to CO2 emissions with current steel process configurations. Electrification of the primary steel production in terms of H-DR/EAF process (Pathway 2), could result in almost fossil-free steel production, and Sweden could achieve a 10% reduction in total CO2 e... New Design of Copper−Inconel 601 Ground Electrode Spark Plug Based on a Thermo-Mechanical Model
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: experimental analysis, Inconel 601, new design, spark plug, thermo-mechanical model
Inconel 601 is one material of choice for intermediate- to high-temperature protective coatings for spark plugs’ ground electrodes. Production of ground electrodes of spark plugs implies the following operations: the tamping of the copper core in an Inconel 601 cup, cold-forming of the assembly, annealing, welding, and bending of the final spark plug. On the production line, the use of Inconel 601 as a protective coating for ground electrodes leads to possible cracking in the welded area after bending. In the present paper, possible causes of cracking are analyzed. It is clearly shown that a combination of Copper −Inconel interface oxidation, Inconel yielding during the heat treatment, and micro-movements during bending lead to cracks in the welded area of the ground electrode. First, the detrimental effect of gaps, between Copper and Inconel 601, is shown experimentally. Second, a thermo-mechanical analysis combined with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations identified the a... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: agglomeration, conducting polymer, hybrid solar cell, nanowire, passivation, PEDOT:PSS, photovoltaic response, recombination losses, silicon nanowire, solar cell, surface traps
Among various photovoltaic devices, the poly 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene:poly styrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and silicon nanowire (SiNW)-based hybrid solar cell is getting momentum for the next generation solar cell. Although, the power-conversion efficiency of the PEDOT:PSS−SiNW hybrid solar cell has already been reported above 13% by many researchers, it is still at a primitive stage and requires comprehensive research and developments. When SiNWs interact with conjugate polymer PEDOT:PSS, the various aspects of SiNW array are required to optimize for high efficiency hybrid solar cell. Therefore, the designing of silicon nanowire (SiNW) array is a crucial aspect for an efficient PEDOT:PSS−SiNW hybrid solar cell, where PEDOT:PSS plays a role as a conductor with an transparent optical window just-like as metal-semiconductor Schottky solar cell. Analysis and Design of Self-Oscillating Resonant Converters with Loss-Free Resistor Characteristics
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: design, limit cycle, loss-free resistor, resonant conversion, resonant power converter, self-oscillation, stability
A general approach for the analysis and design of self-oscillating resonant converters is presented in this paper, for a particular class of circuits in which the change of input voltage polarity is caused by the zero-crossings of the input inductor current. The key features of the method are an analytical description in the time-domain of a spiral that eventually converges into an ellipse, and a frequency−domain analysis that explains the behavior of the ellipse as a limit cycle. On a theoretical basis, this class of circuits behaves as loss-free resistors (LFR) because in steady-state the input inductor current is in phase with the first harmonic of the input voltage. The proposed analytical procedure predicts accurately the amplitude and frequency of the limit cycle and justifies the stability of its generation. This accuracy is reflected in the close agreement between the theoretical expressions and the corresponding simulated and measured waveforms. Third and fourth order resonant... [more]
