Enhancement of Biodiesel Production from High-Acid-Value Waste Cooking Oil via a Microwave Reactor Using a Homogeneous Alkaline Catalyst
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, high acid value, microwave, transesterification, waste cooking oil
In this study, low quality oils (waste cooking oils) with high acid value (4.81 mg KOH/g) were utilized as the feedstocks for a transesterification reaction enhanced by additional microwave power and the use of an NaOH catalyst. The kinetics of the transesterification reaction under different reaction times and temperatures was studied. It was found that in the microwave-assisted transesterification reaction, the optimum conditions under a microwave power of 600 W were as follows: an NaOH catalyst of 0.8 wt %, a 12:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil, a reaction time of 2 min, and a reaction temperature of 65 °C. The conversion of waste cooking oil into biodiesel reached 98.2% after this short reaction time. This result conformed to 96.5% of the standard value of Taiwan CNS 15072. In addition, with increases in the reaction temperature from 55 to 65 °C, the reaction rate constant increased from 0.635 to 2.396 min−1, and the activation energy required for the transesterification reaction w... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Internet of Things (IoT), photovoltaic power forecasting algorithm, recurrent neural networks (RNN)
Photovoltaic (PV) power fluctuations caused by weather changes can lead to short-term mismatches in power demand and supply. Therefore, to operate the power grid efficiently and reliably, short-term PV power forecasts are required against these fluctuations. In this paper, we propose a deep RNN-based PV power short-term forecast. To reflect the impact of weather changes, the proposed model utilizes the on-site weather IoT dataset and power data, collected in real-time. We investigated various parameters of the proposed deep RNN-based forecast model and the combination of weather parameters to find an accurate prediction model. Experimental results showed that accuracies of 5 and 15 min ahead PV power generation forecast, using 3 RNN layers with 12 time-step, were 98.0% and 96.6% based on the normalized RMSE, respectively. Their R2-scores were 0.988 and 0.949. In experiments for 1 and 3 h ahead of PV power generation forecasts, their accuracies were 94.8% and 92.9%, respectively. Also,... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: building energy, hybrid system, naturally ventilated ward, thermal comfort, tropical climate
The tropical climate with its high average temperatures throughout the year affects the thermal comfort of buildings, especially for naturally ventilated spaces. The government’s move to turn hospitals into green buildings is seen in line with the global commitment to conserve the environment and the country’s current policy of supporting sustainable development. To achieve this goal, energy efficiency and thermal comfort need to be given priority in the focus on hospital planning and implementation for a better quality of the indoor environment. This literature review has led to the need to improve thermal comfort in natural ventilated wards in government hospitals. Some wards are built without air conditioning to save on construction costs, reduce utility costs through low energy consumption, as well as the need for infection control and airborne infections. However, current climate change requires a special study of thermal comfort in wards that use natural ventilation. An innovativ... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cost of transport, dynamic simulation, FitzHugh–Nagumo’s neuron, leg trajectories, nullcline-based control strategy, quadruped robot
This paper proposes an analysis of the energy efficiency of a small quadruped robotic structure, designed based on the MIT Mini Cheetah, controlled using a central pattern generator based on the FitzHugh−Nagumo neuron. The robot’s performance evaluated on structurally complex terrain in a dynamic simulation environment is compared with other robotic structures on wheels and with hybrid architectures. The energy cost involved in carrying out an assigned task involving the need to traverse uneven terrain is calculated as a relevant index to be taken into account. In particular, simple control strategies impacting the leg trajectories are taken into account as the main factors affecting the energy efficiency in different terrain configurations. The adaptation of the leg trajectories is evaluated depending on the terrain characteristics, improving the locomotion performance.

A Novel Application of Ensemble Methods with Data Resampling Techniques for Drill Bit Selection in the Oil and Gas Industry
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: drill bits selection, ensemble methods, imbalanced data, petroleum data analytics
Selection of the most suitable drill bit type is an important task for drillers when planning for new oil and gas wells. With the advancement of intelligent predictive models, the automated selection of drill bit type is possible using earlier drilled offset wells’ data. However, real-field well data samples naturally involve an unequal distribution of data points that results in the formation of a complex imbalance multi-class classification problem during drill bit selection. In this analysis, Ensemble methods, namely Adaboost and Random Forest, have been combined with the data re-sampling techniques to provide a new approach for handling the complex drill bit selection process. Additionally, four popular machine learning techniques namely, K-nearest neighbors, naïve Bayes, multilayer perceptron, and support vector machine, are also evaluated to understand the performance degrading effects of imbalanced drilling data obtained from Norwegian wells. The comparison of results shows that... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic force, electromagnetic-structural coupled analysis, PMSM, specific frequency, topology optimization, vibration, vibration reduction
Vibration and noise reduction are very important in electric vehicle driving motors. In this study, topology optimization of housing was performed to reduce vibration in a specific frequency caused by electromagnetic force generated by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The vibration induced by the electromagnetic force of the motor was calculated using electromagnetic-structural coupled analysis. Then, the magnitude of the acceleration for a specific frequency at which peak occurs in the rectangular and circular shape housing concept design model was reduced by using the topology optimization method. As a result, the rectangular and circular shape housing design reduced 92.9% and 96.0%, respectively. Finally, the vibration was effectively reduced while maintaining the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor, for which topology optimization was conducted while not changing the rotor or stator shape design (electromagnetic design factor) but by changing the motor housing... Peak Ratio Characteristic Value Sequence Based Signal Processing Method for Transit-Time Ultrasonic Gas Flowmeter
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: amplitude fluctuation, peak serial number, PRCVS, signal processing method, ultrasonic gas flowmeter
The transit-time ultrasonic gas flowmeter plays a vital part in the measurement field with its unique advantages. In recent years, it has developed into a research hotspot in the field of gas flow measurement. However, while the ultrasonic signal propagates in gas, the amplitude fluctuation of the ultrasonic signal is produced under the condition of energy attenuation and unstable flow field. This leads to inaccurate transit time of ultrasonic signal that causes flow calculation errors. Aiming at this problem, a signal processing method is proposed in this paper for the transit-time ultrasonic gas flowmeter based on the peak ratio characteristic value sequence (PRCVS). Through the research on the mathematical model of ultrasonic signal, the ratio of the amplitude of adjacent peaks is defined as the peak ratio characteristic value (PRCV) of the peak. According to the corresponding relationship between the PRCV and the peak serial number, a set of reference PRCVS is established. By match... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FEM modeling, integrated motor–water pump aggregate, linear tubular motors, motor dynamics analysis, sustainable watering, switched reluctance motors
Simple, cheap, and efficient water pumps are needed in developing countries. A reciprocating water pump driven by a switched reluctance linear tubular motor with double pistons that can be supplied from a photovoltaic power source seems to respond to this demand. This type of new motor (one with reciprocating motion) is presented in the paper. In order to develop a strong driving force at two extreme piston positions and achieve a long piston stroke, a double coil motor with a double secondary and two springs is proposed. Simulation results of force, current, and voltage waveforms obtained using MATLAB/Simulink are presented. The electromagnetic forces and coil inductances, which depended on the current and the secondary positions of the pistons, were determined using FEM. Simulation results are compared with those obtained from an experiment carried out on the motor prototype.

Sequential Switching Shunt Regulator Parallel Power Processing Control for High Capacitance Solar Arrays
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: sequential switch shunt regulator, solar array parasitic capacitance, solar array regulator
This paper presents a new control strategy for reducing the switching losses produced by the use of high parasitic capacitance solar arrays in the sequential switching shunt regulator. Instead of dividing the solar array into equal sections, the proposed strategy is based on two different sections types, low-capacitance and high-capacitance ones. In order to reduce the switching losses and to maintain the original closed-loop response, a novel parallel power processing control strategy is implemented. With this new technique the low-capacitance sections are the only ones that switch at high frequency to regulate the bus while the high-capacitance sections are only connected or disconnected under high load power changes. In addition, the control closed loop delay associated to the time needed to charge the parasitic capacitance has been modelled and a controller modification is proposed to reduce AC performance degradation.

Modeling and Analysis of Polarized Couplers under Misalignment for Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging Systems
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electric vehicle charging, modeling and analysis, polarized coupler, under misalignment, wireless power transfer
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is becoming popular increasingly in stationary electric vehicle (EV) charging. Various coil structures were proposed to improve the coupling characteristics, and polarized couplers have been proven to have better performance. Considering the varying spatial scales of transmitting and receiving, coils will alter the mutual inductance, further affecting the output power and transmission efficiency; therefore, it is crucial to calculate the mutual inductance of polarized couplers with variable offset for WPT system design. However, given the complex structure and the various excitation conditions of polarized couplers, the solving process based on the finite element model is time-consuming and resource intensive, therefore it is necessary to develop analytical models of mutual inductance for polarized couplers under misalignment. In this paper, the analytical models of the two commonly used polarized couplers with a Double-D polarized coil (DDP) or a Bipolar... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: annual annuity, micro-hydro pump storage, operating strategies, pump as turbine, simulation model
Storage technologies are an increasingly crucial element in the continued expansion of renewable energy production. Micro-hydro storage using a pump as a turbine is a potentially promising solution in certain cases, for example, for extending existing photovoltaic systems (PV) and thus reducing grid load and enabling economically beneficial self-consumption of the energy produced. This paper gives an overview of various operating strategies and their technical and economic efficiencies. The evaluation was based on a simulation model of a system that uses measured characteristic maps of both the pump and turbine operations. An optimizer was employed to vary the essential system parameters, which made it possible to determine the optimal economical operation of the pump as a turbine in combination with a PV system. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: data-driven policy design, energy modelling, heating transition, local policy, modelling practices, multi-model ecologies, municipality
In 2018, the Dutch national government announced its decision to end natural gas extraction. This decision posed a challenge for local governments (municipalities); they have to organise a heat supply that is natural gas-free. Energy models can decrease the complexity of this challenge, but some challenges hinder their effective use in decision-making. The main research question of this paper is: What are the perceived advantages and limitations of energy models used by municipalities within their data-driven decision-making process concerning the natural-gas free heating transition? To answer this question, literature on energy models, data-driven policy design and modelling practices were reviewed, and based on this, nine propositions were formulated. The propositions were tested by reflecting on data from case studies of ten municipalities, including 21 experts interviews. Results show that all municipalities investigated, use or are planning to use modelling studies to develop plan... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, iodine-sulfur cycle, species transport, structural design
The heat generated in a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor can be used to drive the iodine-sulfur cycle to produce hydrogen. However, the sulfuric acid decomposition step requires a sophisticated sulfuric acid decomposer to increase the decomposition rate. The decomposition of sulfuric acid mainly occurs in the catalytic zone, and the optimization of its structure is very important for increasing the decomposition rate. This study focuses on the structural design of the catalytic zone of the sulfuric acid decomposer unit. The structure with double inner tubes is designed to analyze the influence of the inner tube heat transfer area and the catalytic volume of the annulus region on the decomposition rate. The species transport model is used to predict the proportion of products followed by analysis of the key factors affecting the decomposition rate of the catalytic domain. The results reveal that the new design attains the decomposition temperature requirements and increases the fluid... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, control system design, learning feedforward control, linear motor, multiagent control, Simulation
Multiagent control system (MACS) has become a promising solution for solving complex control problems. Using the advantages of MACS-based design approaches, a novel solution for advanced control of mechatronic systems has been developed in this paper. The study has aimed at integrating learning control into MACS. Specifically, learning feedforward control (LFFC) is implemented as a pattern for incorporation in MACS. The major novelty of this work is that the feedback control part is realized in a real-time periodic MACS, while the LFFC algorithm is done on-line, asynchronously, and in a separate non-real-time aperiodic MACS. As a result, a MACS-based LFFC design method has been developed. A second-order B-spline neural network (BSN) is used as a function approximator for LFFC whose input-output mapping can be adapted during control and is intended to become equal to the inverse model of the plant. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generator (DG), fault analysis, levelized cost of energy, particle swarm optimization (PSO), single line-to-ground fault
The power requirements of grids have risen as artificial intelligence and electric vehicle technologies have been used. Thus, the installation of distributed generators (DGs) has become an essential factor to streamline power grids. The objective of this study is to optimize the capacity and location of DGs. For this purpose, an objective function was defined, which takes into account the fault current and the levelized cost of energy, and a modified particle swarm optimization method was applied. Then, we analyzed a case of a single line-to-ground fault with a test feeder (i.e., the IEEE 30 bus system) with no DGs connected, as well as a case where the DGs are optimally connected. The effect of the optimally allocated DGs on the system was analyzed. We discuss an optimal layout method that takes the economic efficiency of the DG installation into account.
