A Modular Multilevel Converter with an Advanced PWM Control Technique for Grid-Tied Photovoltaic System
Safa Haq, Shuvra Prokash Biswas, Md. Kamal Hosain, Md. Ashib Rahman, Md. Rabiul Islam, Sumaya Jahan
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid connected, inverter, modular multilevel cascaded (MMC), modulation technique, solar photovoltaic (PV) solar power generation
Due to global warming and shortage of fossil fuels, the grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system has gained significant popularity all over the world. The modular multilevel cascaded (MMC) inverter is the natural choice for step-up transformer and line filter less direct medium voltage grid integration of solar PV systems. However, power quality and loss are the important issues while connecting the PV system to the medium voltage grid through MMC inverter. Modulation technique is the key to maintain output power quality, e.g., total harmonic distortion (THD) and to ensure low switching and conduction losses. In this paper, an advanced modulation technique named “triangle saturated common mode pulse width modulation (TSCMPWM)” control is proposed for a 3-phase 5-level MMC inverter-based grid-tied PV system. Compared to traditional modulation techniques, the proposed TSCMPWM control offers the lowest voltage THD as well as lower inverter power losses. Performance of the proposed mo... [more]
Examining the Journey of a Pay-as-You-Go Solar Home System Customer: A Case Study of Rwanda
Vivien Kizilcec, Priti Parikh, Iwona Bisaga
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: customer journey, framework, pay-as-you-go, solar home systems (SHS)
Solar home systems (SHSs) are successfully addressing energy access deficits across the globe, particularly when combined with pay-as-you-go (PAYG) payment models, allowing households to pay for energy services in small instalments. To increase energy access, it is vital to understand the PAYG SHS customer journey in depth. To aid this, the paper presents unique data from active customers, consisting of structured interviews (n = 100) and two focus groups (n = 24) across two districts in Rwanda. These results are presented under a novel customer journey framework, which describes all the individual stages a customer might experience, including awareness and understanding, purchase, usage, upgrade, recommendation and retaining or switching energy source. The paper reveals that the customer journey is non-linear and cyclical in nature, acknowledging that a household operates in a social network within which they could influence or be influenced by others. It also highlights the growing i... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage potential, building energy performance, building renewables integration, local energy sharing potential, PV-based, self-consumption, self-sufficiency, test facility
In recent years, investigations on advanced technological solutions aiming to achieve high-energy performance in buildings have been carried out by research centers and universities, in accordance with the reduction in buildings’ energy consumption required by European Union. However, even if the research and design of new technological solutions makes it possible to achieve the regulatory objectives, a building’s performance during operation deviates from simulations. To deepen this topic, interesting studies have focused on testing these solutions on full-scale facilities used for real-life activities. In this context, a test facility will be built in the university campus of Politecnico di Torino (Italy). The facility has been designed to be an all-electric nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB), where heating and cooling demand will be fulfilled by an air-source heat pump and photovoltaic generators will meet the energy demand. In this paper, the facility energy performance is evaluate... [more]

Sebastian Wolff, Svenja Kalt, Manuel Bstieler, Markus Lienkamp
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric, efficiency, electric machines, heavy-duty trucks, powertrain design, topology
The advancement of electric mobility as a measure to comply with international climate targets and sustain renewable resources in the future has led to an electrification of the mobility sector in recent years. This trend has not been spared in the logistics and commercial vehicle sector. Emerging electric powertrain concepts for long-haul vehicles have since been developed and adapted to different use cases and axle concepts. In this paper, the authors show the influence of the powertrain topology and the associated design of the electric machine on the efficiency and energy consumption of commercial vehicles. For this, existing series or prototype long-haul axle topologies are analyzed regarding their efficiency and operating points within four driving cycles. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis on the influence of the total gearbox ratio tests the assumed designs. We find that single-machine topologies offer efficiency advantages over multiple-machine topologies. However, this stud... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hierarchical protection system, local layer, multi-information fusion, power generation-side, station layer, system layer
With renewable power sources and new topology structures being widely introduced into the power system, the current local information-based power generation-side protection cannot fully guarantee the protection performance and the safety coordination with the power grid. This paper proposes an improved hierarchical protection system on the power generation-side. The proposed system takes advantage of the fusion of multi-information provided by the system, station and local layers. The system layer provides the information such as system voltage control and power regulation demand, so that the generation-side protection and control system can adapt to the system operation mode and power regulation demand. The station layer realizes the coordination of the protection principle and action strategy among the related units through information interaction with the power grid, the automatic control system and the local layer protection. The local layer introduces the condition monitoring info... [more]

Lucas Deotti, Ivo Silva Júnior, Leonardo Honório, André Marcato
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: empirical modeling, IEC 61853, outdoor validation, photovoltaic performance, review
According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61853 standard, the power rating of photovoltaic (PV) modules must be done on a measurement matrix that broadly covers the ranges of operating conditions encountered in the field. These results are becoming more frequent in recent module datasheets. This paper investigates the effectiveness of applying existing empirical PV performance models while using a matrix with 18 operational records, similar to the 22 that were recommended by IEC 61853, as an alternative to the thousands of records that are conventionally used to determine their coefficients. A review of fifteen empirical models is presented and the procedures for determining their coefficients are discussed. In order to validate them, they were applied to data from fourteen PV modules, which remained installed outdoors for about one year, in three locations with distinct climate types. Although the uncertainties that were obtained with the proposed approach, as c... [more]

Giada Giuffrida, Maurizio Detommaso, Francesco Nocera, Rosa Caponetto
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioclimatic strategies, cooling load, optimisation, rammed earth construction
The renewed attention paid to raw earth construction in recent decades is linked to its undoubted sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and low embodied energy. In Italy, the use of raw earth as a construction material is limited by the lack of a technical reference standard and is penalised by the current energy legislation for its massive behaviour. Research experiences, especially transoceanic, on highly performative contemporary buildings made with natural materials show that raw earth can be used, together with different types of reinforcements, to create safe, earthquake-resistant, and thermally efficient buildings. On the basis of experimental data of an innovative fibre-reinforced rammed earth material, energy analyses are developed on a rammed earth building designed for a Mediterranean climate. The paper focuses on the influences that different design solutions, inspired by traditional bioclimatic strategies, and various optimised wall constructions have in the improvement of t... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas–liquid dynamics model, lithium-ion battery, online parameter identification, state-of-charge estimation
Accurately estimating the online state-of-charge (SOC) of the battery is one of the crucial issues of the battery management system. In this paper, the gas−liquid dynamics (GLD) battery model with direct temperature input is selected to model Li(NiMnCo)O2 battery. The extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm is elaborated to couple the offline model and online model to achieve the goal of quickly eliminating initial errors in the online SOC estimation. An implementation of the hybrid pulse power characterization test is performed to identify the offline parameters and determine the open-circuit voltage vs. SOC curve. Apart from the standard cycles including Constant Current cycle, Federal Urban Driving Schedule cycle, Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule cycle and Dynamic Stress Test cycle, a combined cycle is constructed for experimental validation. Furthermore, the study of the effect of sampling time on estimation accuracy and the robustness analysis of the initial value are carried out... [more]

Guilherme Pontes Luz, Rodrigo Amaro e Silva
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collective photovoltaic systems, energy communities, energy systems modeling and optimization
The recently approved regulation on Energy Communities in Europe is paving the way for new collective forms of energy consumption and production, mainly based on photovoltaics. However, energy modeling approaches that can adequately evaluate the impact of these new regulations on energy community configurations are still lacking, particularly with regards to the grid tariffs imposed on collective systems. Thus, the present work models three different energy community configurations sustained on collective photovoltaics self-consumption for a small city in southern Portugal. This energy community, which integrates the city consumers and a local winery, was modeled using the Python-based Calliope framework. Using real electricity demand data from power transformers and an actual winery, the techno-economic feasibility of each configuration was assessed. Results show that all collective arrangements can promote a higher penetration of photovoltaic capacity (up to 23%) and a modest reducti... [more]

Petar Sarajcev, Antun Meglic, Ranko Goic
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EMTP, lightning, overvoltage protection, surge arresters, transformer, transient analysis, wind turbine
This paper presents an electromagnetic transient analysis of lightning-initiated overvoltage stresses of the step-up transformers installed inside a nacelle of onshore, multi-megawatt, new-generation wind turbines. The increase in the wind turbine (WT) nominal power output, necessitated introducing the step-up transformer into the nacelle. A transformer installed inside a nacelle is subjected to completely different overvoltage stresses from those present if it were installed at the base of the WT tower. This has serious repercussions on its overvoltage protection (i.e., selection and installation of surge arresters) and insulation coordination. Furthermore, the overvoltage protection of medium-voltage cables (inside the tower) is also problematic when considering their length, proximity to the tower wall, and their screen grounding practices, and needs to be tackled in conjunction with that of the step-up transformer. This paper presents detailed models for the various components of t... [more]
New Equation for Optimal Insulation Dependency on the Climate for Office Buildings
Kaiser Ahmed, Jarek Kurnitski
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: climate correction, conductance, economic insulation thickness, NZEB office building
The comparison of building energy efficiency in different climates is a growing issue. Unique structural solutions will not ensure the same energy use, but the differences also remain if cost-optimal solutions are applied. This study developed a new equation for the assessment of building envelope optimal insulation in different climates for office buildings. The developed method suggests determining actual degree days from simulated heating energy need and the thermal conductance of a building, avoiding in such a way the use of a base temperature. The method was tested in four climates and validated against cost-optimal solutions solved with optimization. The accuracy of the method was assessed with sensitivity analyses of key parameters such as window-to-wall ratios (WWRs), window g-values, costs of heating, and electricity. These results showed that the existing square root equation overestimated the climate difference effect so that the calculation from the cold climate U-value res... [more]

Jakub Jasiński, Mariusz Kozakiewicz, Maciej Sołtysik
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy cooperatives, mixed integer programming, renewable energy community, renewable energy sources, rural areas
The strategies, plans and legislation on energy market development and decarbonization in the European Union (EU) developed in recent years, such as the directives implementing the package “Clean energy for all Europeans”, aim at promoting not only renewable energy sources, but also new institutions that involve the development of local energy markets and a greater role for citizens in managing their own energy generation. At the same time, Poland remains the economy most dependent on coal and one of the largest air polluters in the EU. In order to minimize this problem and to meet the direction of energy development in the EU, Poland decided to establish, among other things, an energy cooperative. It is intended to fill the gap in the development of the civil dimension of energy on a local scale and at the same time improve efficiency in the use of the potential of renewable energy sources in rural areas. The authors of the paper seek to verify the extent to which this new institution... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: flux weakening, non-magnetic conductor, permanent magnet synchronous motor, variable magnetic reluctance
A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on the principle of variable exciting magnetic reluctance (VMRPMSM) is presented. The motor is equipped with symmetrical non-magnetic conductors on both sides of the tangential magnetized permanent magnets (PMs). By placing the non-magnetic conductor (NMC), the magnetic reluctance in the exciting circuit is adjusted, and the flux weakening (FW) of the motor is realized. Hence, the NMC is studied comprehensively. On the basis of introducing the motor structure, the FW principle of this PMSM is described. The shape of the NMC is determined by analyzing and calculating the electromagnetic force (EF) acting on the PMs. We calculate the magnetic reluctance of the NMC and research on the effects of the NMC on electromagnetic force, d-axis and q-axis inductance and FW performance. The critical speeds from the test of the no-load back electromotive force (EMF) verify the correctness of the NMC design. The analysis is corresponding to the test r... [more]

Keywords: belt perforation, catalog mechanical properties, dynamic analysis, Lagrangian mechanics, linear drive, punching die, timing belt
The subject of the dynamic analysis presented in the article is the linear drive system with a timing belt utilized in the automatic device for polymer composite belt perforation. The analysis was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the timing belt was modeled with all the relevant dynamic phenomena; subsequently, the tension force of the belt required for the correct operation of the belt transmission was determined. The necessary parameters for belt elasticity, vibration damping, and inertia are based exclusively on the catalog data provided by the manufacturer. During the second stage, equations of motion were derived for the designed drive system with a timing belt, and characteristics were identified to facilitate the optimal selection of electromechanical drives for the construction solution under analysis. The presented methodology allows for designing an effective solution that may be adapted for other constructions. The obtained results showed the influence of the k... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CHP, energetic and economic optimization, Energy Efficiency, heat sources, municipal sewage sludge drying
The treatment of growing production of municipal sewage sludge has become a significant global problem. Drying of digested sewage sludge is a promising alternative to sludge disposal at dumping sites. The research objective of this study was to find the optimal heat source for a sludge drying plant in a large municipal sewage treatment plant (people equivalent: 250,000). Two boundary heat supply cases were analyzed in the paper: cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) units, internal combustion (IC) engines fired with natural gas, and plant supplied with a gas boiler. The aim of the research was to find the optimal size of the cogeneration unit cooperating with the gas boiler as heat sources for a given drying plant case with the maximum net present (NPV) value as the objective function. The results of the conducted optimization show higher profitability of cases with larger cogeneration unit. For the basic assumptions, the maximum NPV is obtained for the largest analyzed CHP unit: 1300 k... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management, Model Predictive Control, power converters, soft deadbeat algorithm
Power converters have turned into a critical and every-day solution for electric power systems. In fact, the incorporation of renewable energies has led towards the constant improvement of power converter topologies and their controls. In this context, over the last 10 years, model predictive control (MPC) is positioned as one the most studied and promising alternatives for power converter control. In voltage source inverters (VSI), MPC has only been applied in the inner current control loop, accelerating and improving its dynamic response, but as mentioned, has been limited only to the current control loop. The fastest of the MPC techniques is the Deadbeat (DB) control, and in this paper, it is proposed to employ DB control on the entire system, therefore accelerating the time response not only for the current loops, but also for voltage loops. At the same time, this avoids overshoots and overpower in order to protect the power converter, leading to the fastest dynamic response accord... [more]

Keywords: asymmetric analysis, CO2 emissions, common correlated effect means group, East African countries, economic growth, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This study aims to examine the asymmetric nexus between CO2 emissions and renewable energy and economic and population growth in seven East African countries (EACs) at the regional level and country levels. Common correlated effect means group (CCEMG), nonlinear autoregressive distributed lagged (NARDL), and causality tests were employed for the panel data from 1980 to 2016. The main findings are as follows: (1) Renewable energy consumption negatively affects CO2 emissions, while economic and population growth positively affect CO2 emissions at the regional level. (2) The findings of asymmetric and symmetric linkages between CO2 emissions and its determinants (economic and population growth and renewable energy) are very volatile across the country levels. (3) The causality hypotheses are different across the country and regional levels. (4) This study shows the renewable energy growth nexus, wherein renewable energy positively affects economic growth at the regional level. Lastly, the... [more]
Electric Mobility in a Smart City: European Overview

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bologna, efficiency, electric mobility, Energy, Florence, Hamburg, London, Milan, Oslo, smart cities
According to the United Nations (UN), although cities occupy only 3% of Earth’s surface, they host more than half of the global population, are responsible for 70% of energy consumption, and 75% of carbon emissions. All this is a consequence of the massive urbanization verified since the 1950s and which is expected to continue in the coming decades. A crucial issue will therefore concern the management of existing cities and the planning of future ones, and this was also emphasized by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and communities). Smart Cities are often seen as ideal urban environments in which the different dimensions of a city (economy, education, energy, environment, etc.) are managed successfully and proactively. So, one of the most important challenges cities will have to face, is to guide citizens towards a form of “clean” energy consumption, and the dimension on which decision-makers will be able to work is the decarboniz... Keywords: biogenic residues, Biomass, devolatilization, fluidized bed, gasification, oxygen carrier, pellets
The chemical looping gasification of residual biomasses—operated in fluidized beds composed of oxygen-carriers—may allow the production of biofuels from syngas. This biomass-to-fuel chain can contribute to mitigate climate change, avoiding the accumulation of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The ongoing European research project Horizon2020 CLARA (G.A. 817841) investigates wheat-straw-pellets (WSP) and raw-pine-forest-residue (RPR) pellets as feedstocks for chemical looping gasification. This work presents experimental results from devolatilizations of WSP and RPR, in bubbling beds made of three different oxygen-carriers or sand (inert reference), at 700, 800, 900 °C. Devolatilization is a key step of gasification, influencing syngas quality and quantity. Tests were performed at laboratory-scale, by a quartz reactor (fluidizing agent: N2). For each pellet, collected data allowed the quantification of released gases (H2, CO, CO2, CH4, hydrocarbons) and mass balances, to obtain gas yi... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Control Performance Standard 1 (CPS1), frequency control, Machine Learning, unit commitment
Frequency control is essential to ensure reliability and quality of power systems. North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Control Performance Standard 1 (CPS1) is widely adopted by many operating authorities to examine the quality of the frequency control. The operating authority would have a strong interest in knowing how the frequency-sensitive features affect the CPS1 score and finding out more effective unit-dispatch schedules for reaching the CPS1 goal. As frequency-sensitive features usually possess multi-variable and high-correlated characteristics, this paper employed an ensemble learning technique (the Gradient Boosting Decision Tree algorithm, GBDT) to construct Frequency Response Model (FRM) of the Taipower system in Taiwan to evaluate by CPS1 score. The proposed CPS1 model was then integrated with Unit Commitment (UC) program to determine the unit-dispatch that achieves the targeted CPS1 score. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed CPS1-UC plat... [more]

Keywords: battery degradation process, lithium-ion batteries, recurrent neural network, state of charge estimation
Due to the rapidly increasing energy demand and the more serious environmental pollution problems, lithium-ion battery is more and more widely used as high-efficiency clean energy. State of Charge (SOC) representing the physical quantity of battery remaining energy is the most critical factor to ensure the stability and safety of lithium-ion battery. The novelty SOC estimation model, which is two recurrent neural networks with gated recurrent units combined with Coulomb counting method is proposed in this paper. The estimation model not only takes voltage, current, and temperature as input feature but also takes into account the influence of battery degradation process, including charging and discharging times, as well as the last discharge charge. The SOC of the battery is estimated by the network under three different working conditions, and the results show that the average error of the proposed neural network is less than 3%. Compared with other neural network structures, the propo... [more]
Heat Transfer in Flow Past Two Cylinders in Tandem and Enhancement with a Slit
Li-Chieh Hsu, Che-Wei Liang
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cylinder, enhanced heat transfer, slit, tandem
This study aimed to determine the flow structures and heat transfer for flow past a tandem cylinder array and the effect of a slit on the enhancement of heat transfer. Different distances between cylinders and inclination angles of the slit were simulated to determine the effects on the flow pattern and heat transfer. Overall, the Nusselt number of the array is increased by 6−15% with applying a slit on a cylinder. However, in some special conditions, the slit induces two kinds of flow pattern transforms which are Suppression and Revival. The suppression mode inhibits the vortex shedding and reduces the heat transfer. In contrast, the revival mode triggers the vortex shedding and increases heat transfer.

Keywords: energy communities, local energy technology portfolio, local self-consumption, low-carbon energy systems, small-scale batteries, upscaling
In this work, the main research question is how a high penetration of energy communities (ECs) affects the national electricity demand in the residential sector. Thus, the existing building stock of three European regions/countries, namely, the Iberian Peninsula, Norway, and Austria, is analyzed and represented by four different model energy communities based on characteristic settlement patterns. A tailor-made, open-source model optimizes the utilization of the local energy technology portfolio, especially small-scale batteries and photovoltaic systems within the ECs. Finally, the results on the national level are achieved by upscaling from the neighborhood level. The findings of different 2030 scenarios (building upon narrative storylines), which consider various socio-economic and techno-economic determinants of possible future energy system development, identify a variety of modification potentials of the electricity demand as a result of EC penetration. Fault Propagation Inference Based on a Graph Neural Network for Steam Turbine Systems
Yi-Jing Zhang, Li-Sheng Hu
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault propagation inference, graph neural network, link prediction, steam turbine system
A fault propagates along physical paths until it reaches the boundary of the equipment or system, which shows as a functional failure. Hence, inferring the fault propagation helps to ensure the normal operation of the industrial system. To infer the fault propagation in the steam turbine system, a graph model is developed. Firstly, a process graph topology is constructed according to the system mechanism, whose nodes and edges represent the equipment and mutual relationships. Meanwhile, a fault graph topology is built, in which nodes indicate potential faults and edges are inferred propagation paths. Then, the representations of fault nodes are realized through a graph neural network. Lastly, link prediction methods based on nodes’ representations are conducted, along with the paths inference results. Consequently, the accuracy of fault propagation inference for the steam turbine system is over 86%.
