Ke Song, Yimin Wang, Cancan An, Hongjie Xu, Yuhang Ding
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bond graph method, energy management strategy, extended-range fuel cell electric vehicle, hardware-in-the-loop
In view of the aggravation of global pollution and greenhouse effects, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have attracted increasing attention, owing to their ability to release zero emissions. Extended-range fuel cell vehicles (E-RFCEVs) are the most widely used type of fuel cell vehicles. The powertrain system of E-RFCEV is relatively complex. Bond graph theory was used to model the important parts of the E-RFCEV powertrain system: Battery, motor, fuel cell, DC/DC, vehicle, and driver. In order to verify the control effect of energy management strategy (EMS) in a real-time state, bond graph theory was applied to hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) development. An HiL simulation test-bed based on the bond graph model was built, and the HiL simulation verification of the energy management strategy was completed. Based on the comparison to a power-following EMS, it was found that fuzzy logic EMS is more adaptive to vehicle driving conditions. This study aimed to apply bond graph theory to HiL si... [more]
RES and ES Integration in Combination with Distribution Grid Development Using MILP
Mateusz Andrychowicz
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy curtailment (EC), energy storages (ES), grid development (GD), photovoltaic installations (PV), RES allocation, system modelling, wind turbines (WT)
In the paper, a new method of long-term planning of operation and development of the distribution system, taking into account operational aspects such as power flows, power losses, voltage levels, and energy balances, is presented. The developed method allows for the allocation and selection of the power of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), control of energy storage (ES), curtailing of RES production (EC), and the development of the distribution grid (GD). Different types of RES and loads are considered, represented by generation/demand profiles reflecting their typical operating conditions. RES allocation indicates the node in the distribution system and the power level for each type of RES that may be built. Energy storage (ES) allows generation to be transferred from the demand valley to the peak load. Curtailment of RES generation indicates the moment and level of power by which generation will be reduced, while the grid development (GD) determines between which network nodes a new p... [more]
Variable-Gain Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Damping Control of Series-Compensated DFIG-Based Wind Power System for SSCI Mitigation
Ronglin Ma, Yaozhen Han, Weigang Pan
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, subsynchronous control interaction, super-twisting sliding mode, variable-gain
Subsynchronous oscillation, caused by the interaction between the rotor side converter (RSC) control of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and series-compensated transmission line, is an alleged subsynchronous control interaction (SSCI). SSCI can cause DFIGs to go offline and crowbar circuit breakdown, and then deteriorate power system stability. This paper proposes a novel adaptive super-twisting sliding mode SSCI mitigation method for series-compensated DFIG-based wind power systems. Rotor currents were constrained to track the reference values which are determined by maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and reactive power demand. Super-twisting control laws were designed to generate RSC control signals. True adaptive and non-overestimated control gains were conceived with the aid of barrier function, without need of upper bound of uncertainty derivatives. Stability proof of the studied closed-loop power system was demonstrated in detail with the help of the Lyapunov method. Ti... [more]
Modelling of an Existing Neutral Temperature District Heating Network: Detailed and Approximate Approaches
Selva Calixto, Marco Cozzini, Giampaolo Manzolini
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: district heating and cooling, energy modelling, ground source, heat pumps, waste heat
This paper deals with the modelling of an existing neutral-temperature district heating network, meaning that the distribution temperature is close to the ambient temperature, with decentralised heat pumps. The considered case is located in Ospitaletto, Italy. Heat sources are given by industrial waste heat at about 25 °C and aquifer wells at about 15 °C. Two models are used to analyse the network: a detailed model able to calculate local values of operating parameters and an approximate model focused on energy balances aggregating all users with a lumped demand. Both models include the behaviour of heat pumps, a feature not available in other district heating modelling tools. An entire year of operation is considered, with an hourly time resolution. Load profiles are provided as inputs, while the main outputs consist of energy balances and primary energy consumptions. The corresponding results are compared, showing a reasonable agreement, where the approximate model underestimates the... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: boltzmann equation, corona ignition, corona spark plug, electron transport
A mono-dimensional code for the simulation of the effects of High Frequency Ignition systems (HFI) on the production of chemical radicals was developed and here presented. The simulations were carried out by considering the typical environmental thermodynamic conditions of a nowadays engine at full load. An electron transport model is linked with a Boltzmann solver coupled with a chemistry solver, affecting the Electron Energy Distribution Function (EEDF) in order to obtain the physical conditions leading to the production of radical components for a given fuel mixture. The transport equations for the electrons, the positive and the negative ions, and the Gauss’ law in a steady-state plasma region. Then the Boltzmann equation for the electrons, in a spatially homogeneous steady-state case, is solved in order to obtain the EEDF. Finally the chemical kinetics model is employed assuming a fuel-air mixture neglecting the fuel carbon atoms due to the assumption that electron-impact dissocia... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Modelling, perceived lighting quality index (PLQI), scenario-assessment, street lighting (SL), urban environment
If excessive and misdirected, street lighting (SL) causes energy waste and might pose significant risks to humans and natural ecosystems. Based on data collected by an interactive user-oriented method, we developed a novel empirical approach that enables the spatial identification of over-illuminated areas in residential neighborhoods and calculation of potential energy savings that can be achieved there, by reducing excessive illumination. We applied the estimated model to a densely populated residential neighborhood in the City of Tel Aviv-Yafo in Israel, to test the proposed approach’s performance. According to our estimates, illumination levels can be lowered by up to 50% in approximately 60% of the neighborhood’s area, which is currently over-illuminated, thus leading to significant energy savings, while preserving a reasonable level of visual comfort associated with SL.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressor, Computational Fluid Dynamics, numerical problem downsizing, Optimization, parametrization, response surface, scroll
An efficient approach to the geometry optimization problem of a non-axisymmetric flow channel is discussed. The method combines geometrical transformation with a computational fluid dynamics solver, a multi-objective genetic algorithm, and a response surface. This approach, through geometrical modifications and simplifications allows transforming a non-axisymmetric problem into the axisymmetric one in some specific devices i.e., a scroll distributor or a volute. It results in a significant decrease in the problem size, as only the flow in a quasi-2D section of the channel is solved. A significantly broader design space is covered in a much shorter time than in the standard method, and the optimization of large flow problems is feasible with desktop-class computers. One computational point is obtained approximately eight times faster than in full geometry computations. The method was applied to a scroll distributor. For the case under analysis, it was possible to increase flow uniformit... [more]

Keywords: DGX-2, DGX-A100, DVFS, energy efficient computing, high performance computing, performance analysis, power-aware computing, tensor cores
Nvidia is a leading producer of GPUs for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, bringing top performance and energy-efficiency. We present performance, power consumption, and thermal behavior analysis of the new Nvidia DGX-A100 server equipped with eight A100 Ampere microarchitecture GPUs. The results are compared against the previous generation of the server, Nvidia DGX-2, based on Tesla V100 GPUs. We developed a synthetic benchmark to measure the raw performance of floating-point computing units including Tensor Cores. Furthermore, thermal stability was investigated. In addition, Dynamic Frequency and Voltage Scaling (DVFS) analysis was performed to determine the best energy-efficient configuration of the GPUs executing workloads of various arithmetical intensities. Under the energy-optimal configuration the A100 GPU reaches efficiency of 51 GFLOPS/W for double-precision workload and 91 GFLOPS/W for tensor core double precision workload, which makes the A100 the most... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interval predictions, isolated microgrid system, microgrid energy exchange, Model Predictive Control, reserve strategy, two-stage control
Stability and reliability are of the most important concern for isolated microgrid systems that have no support from the utility grid. Interval predictions are often applied to ensure the system stability of isolated microgrids as they cover more uncertainties and robust control can be achieved based on more sufficient information. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic microgrid energy exchange method based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach to make better use of the prediction intervals so that the system stability and cost efficiency of isolated microgrids are improved simultaneously. Appropriate scenarios are selected from the predictions according to the evaluation of future trends and system capacity. In the meantime, a two-stage adaptive reserve strategy is adopted to further utilize the potential of interval predictions and maintain the system security adaptively. Reserves are determined at the optimization stage to prepare some extra capacity for the fluctuation... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crack extraction, fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering, Laplace pyramid, region growing, solar panel
Crack extraction of solar panels has become a research focus in recent years. The cracks are small and hidden. In addition, there are particles of irregular shape and size on the surface of the polycrystalline solar panel, whose reflection position and direction are random. Therefore, there is a complex and uneven texture background on the solar panel image, which makes the crack extraction more difficult. In this paper, a crack extraction method combining image texture and morphological features is proposed. Firstly, the background texture and multi-scale details are suppressed by the linear filter and the Laplace pyramid decomposition method. Secondly, the edge can be extracted based on the modulus maximum method of the wavelet transform. Finally, cracks were extracted by using the improved Fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering combining the morphological and texture features of the cracks. To make the extraction results more accurate and reasonable, an improved region growth algorithm is p... [more]
Exergy-Based Assessment of Polymers Production and Recycling: An Application to the Automotive Sector
Sofia Russo, Alicia Valero, Antonio Valero, Marta Iglesias-Émbil
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: embodied exergy, end-of-life vehicles, polymer life cycle, recycling
In the last century, the economic growth has been accompanied by a worldwide diffusion of polymers for multiple applications. However, there is a growing attention to the environmental pollution and energy consumption linked to the unconditional use of plastic. In the present work, exergy is used as a measure of the resource consumption during the life cycle of polymers. Nine commercially diffused polymers are chosen, and their production chains are identified according to the “grave to cradle” approach. The global Embodied Exergy (EE) is calculated as the sum of the contribution of each step of the chain, including the production process and the Exergy Replacement Cost (ERC) of the fossil fuel. Then, recycling routes and the associated exergy consumption are analysed. Thermodynamic recycling indexes are developed depending on the final product, namely the crude polymeric material and the oil derivatives or structural molecules. The main results show that some commonly used polymers ha... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental effectiveness, environmental footprint, life cycle assessment, municipal wastewater treatment plant, Wastewater
The efficient and timely removal of organic matter and nutrients from water used in normal municipal functions is considered to be the main task of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Therefore, these facilities are considered to be essential units that are required to avoid pollution of the water environment and decrease the possibility of triggering eutrophication. Even though these benefits are undeniable, they remain at odds with the high energy demand of wastewater treatment and sludge processes. As a consequence, WWTPs have various environmental impacts, which can be estimated and categorized using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis. In this study, a municipal WWTP based in Poznań, Poland, was examined using the method defined in ISO 14040. ReCiPe Endpoint and Midpoint (v1.11), in a hierarchical approach, were used to evaluate the environmental impacts regarding 18 different categories. All calculations were conducted using a detailed database from 2019, which describes each c... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy, energy policy, gap, green economy, sustainable development
This paper aims to check the impact of investment and institutional determinants on the energy efficiency gap. The findings of the bibliometric analysis confirmed the growth of research interests in identifying the core determinants of the energy efficiency gap. The central hypothesises are: the increasing quality of the institutions leads to an increase of green investments in the energy sector and the dual relationships between investment and institutional determinants lead to additional synergy effects, which allow boosting the decline of energy efficiency gaps of the national economy. For the analysis, the times series were collected from the World Data Bank, Eurostat, Bloomberg, for Ukraine for the period of 2002−2019. The following methods were used: the unit root test—for checking the stationarity of data—and the Johansen test and VEC-modelling—for the cointegration analysis. The findings prove that to reduce the energy efficiency gaps in Ukraine by 1% next year, it is necessary... [more]

Keywords: learning, module temperature, photovoltaic, preciseness function learning model (PFL model), solar irradiance
This research presents a method to improve data accuracy for the more efficient data management of the studied applications. The data accuracy was improved using the preciseness function learning model (PFL model). It contains a database in which the amount of data is more or less dependent on all of the possible behavior of the studied application. The proposed model improves data with functions obtained by optimizing curves to represent the data at each point, which estimate the database’s diffusion behavior, and functions can be built around all of the various forms of databases. The proposed model always updates its database after processing. It has been learning to optimize the processing precision. In order to verify the precision of the proposed model through its application to a PV system simulation model, the process’s database should contain at least one year. This is because the overall behavior of the PV power output in Thailand depends on the seasonal weather; Thailand has... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio solid refuse fuel, fuel characteristics, pellet, solid fuel quality standards, spent coffee grounds
To help mitigate the effects of global warming and fossil fuel depletion caused by human use of fossil fuels, solid fuel pellets were developed from a mixture of spent coffee grounds (SCG) and pine sawdust (PS). The feasibility of SCG-PS pellets as biofuel was also verified by evaluating its fuel quality. An increase in the proportion of SCG in the pellet led to an increase in its calorific value, owing to the high C, H, and oil contents, and increases in the ash and S contents, owing to the high S content in SCG. Analysis of the feedstock particle size distribution revealed that SCG particles are smaller than PS particles; thus, the durability of the pellet decreases as the proportion of SCG increases. Accordingly, the samples with higher SCG proportions (70 and 90 wt.%) did not meet the moisture content standards for biomass solid refuse fuel (bio-SRF) set by the Korea Ministry of Environment, whereas the samples with lower SCG proportions did. In particular, CP10 (10 wt.% SCG + 90 w... [more]
Surface Charge Properties of Epoxy Composites under DC Voltage Affected by Surface and Bulk Conductivity
Qian Wang, Xidong Liang, Ke Chen, Chao Wu, Shan Liu
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: charge accumulation, normal-dominated electric field, surface potential, surface resistivity
As DC transmission voltage increases, the DC wall bushing becomes longer, and a supporting insulator is introduced to keep the conductor straight. Under extremely high electric fields coupled with a thermal gradient, the surface charge of the supporting insulator may distort the field distribution and increase the risk of flashover. In this paper, surface potentials of three model epoxy resin composites were systematically investigated under varied voltage amplitudes, different voltage polarities and electric field distributions. The bulk and surface resistivity of the epoxy resin composites over a broad temperature range were measured to reveal the correlations between surface charge and such basic electrical parameters. The results indicate that the normal-dominated electric field plays the major role in charge accumulation. The processes of surface charge accumulation and dissipation are more closely related to the surface resistivity. As a result, the surface charge properties can... [more]
Numerical Investigation of the Impact of H2 Enrichment on Lean Biogas/Air Flames: An Analytical Modelling Approach
Filipe M. Quintino, Edgar C. Fernandes
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas, correlation, Hydrogen, laminar flame speed, premixed combustion
The transition from natural gas to renewable gases such as biogas and hydrogen creates an interchangeability challenge. The laminar flame speed SL is a critical parameter in appliance design as it is a unique characteristic of the flame mixture. It is thus essential to evaluate the impact of renewable gases on SL. In this work, 1D simulations were conducted in Cantera with the USC-Mech 2.0 kinetic mechanism. The SL of three base biogas blends (BG100, BG90 and BG80) was computed for H2 enrichment up to 50% in volume, equivalence ratio 0.8≤ϕ≤1.0, p=1 atm and Tu=298 K. It was found that the effect of H2 enrichment is higher for base blends with higher CO2 content as the thermal-diffusive and dilution effects of carbon dioxide are mitigated by hydrogen. The introduction of H2 also increases the H radical pool, which is linked with the increase in SL. A new correlation to model the impact of H2 enrichment, SL(xH2)=ζ(ϕ)/SL′(xCO2)xH2exH2+SL′(xCO2), is proposed, which exhibits good agreement w... [more]

Keywords: empirical models, Santiago de Chile, sky conditions, UVER radiation
Ultraviolet radiation is a highly energetic component of the solar spectrum that needs to be monitored because is harmful to life on Earth, especially in areas where the ozone layer has been depleted, like Chile. This work is the first to address the long-term (five-year) behaviour of ultraviolet erythemal radiation (UVER) in Santiago, Chile (33.5° S, 70.7° W, 500 m) using in situ measurements and empirical modelling. Observations indicate that to alert the people on the risks of UVER overexposure, it is necessary to use, in addition to the currently available UV index (UVI), three more erythema indices: standard erythemal doses (SEDs), minimum erythemal doses (MEDs), and sun exposure time (tery). The combination of UVI, SEDs, MEDs, and tery shows that in Santiago, individuals with skin types III and IV are exposed to harmfully high UVER doses for 46% of the time that UVI indicates is safe. Empirical models predicted hourly and daily values UVER in Santiago with great accuracy and can... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy use, climate change, input distributions, propagating uncertainties, regression model
Buildings are subject to significant stresses due to climate change and design strategies for climate resilient buildings are rife with uncertainties which could make interpreting energy use distributions difficult and questionable. This study intends to enhance a robust and credible estimate of the uncertainties and interpretations of building energy performance under climate change. A four-step climate uncertainty propagation approach which propagates downscaled future weather file uncertainties into building energy use is examined. The four-step approach integrates dynamic building simulation, fitting a distribution to average annual weather variables, regression model (between average annual weather variables and energy use) and random sampling. The impact of fitting different distributions to the weather variable (such as Normal, Beta, Weibull, etc.) and regression models (Multiple Linear and Principal Component Regression) of the uncertainty propagation method on cooling and heat... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conditioning, dewatering, filtration efficiency, pressure filtration, sewage sludge
Sludge dewatering is a key element in sludge’s processing and management. Solid-phase separation, sludge volume reduction and the separation of a high-quality supernatant are the main tasks of the dewatering devices. The effectiveness of this task, in turn, results from the selection of the dewatering method and conditioning of the sludge before dewatering. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of conditioning substances (polyelectrolyte, fly ash and zeolite) on the efficiency of dewatering at variable filtration pressure. The use of polyelectrolyte in sludge conditioning was a solution that increased the efficiency of the filtration process. On the contrary, the use of structure-forming substances (fly ash and zeolite) slows the process but reduces the hydration of the filter cake. The same trends were obtained in dual conditioning combining dosing of polyelectrolyte and ash or zeolite. It was also shown that the dewatering efficiency of conditioned sludge with these... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: center of inertia, mechanical torque, smart grid, smart inverter, stabilization, virtual synchronous generator
As distributed power sources via grid-connected inverters equipped with functions to support system stabilization are being rapidly introduced, individual systems are becoming more complex, making the quantification and evaluation of the stabilizing functions difficult. Therefore, to introduce distributed power sources and achieve stable system operation, a system should be reduced to a necessary but sufficient size in order to enable the quantification of its behavior supported by transient theory. In this study, a system in which multiple distributed power supplies equipped with virtual synchronous generator control are connected is contracted to a two-machine system: a main power supply and all other power supplies. The mechanical torque of each power supply is mathematically decomposed into inertia, damping, synchronization torques, and the governor effect. The system frequency deviations determined by these elements are quantitatively indexed using MATLAB/Simulink. The quantificat... [more]
The Influence of the Window Width on FRA Assessment with Numerical Indices

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deformation, frequency response analysis (FRA), numerical index, transformer winding, window width
Frequency response analysis is a method used in transformer diagnostics for the detection of mechanical faults or short-circuits in windings. The interpretation of test results is often performed with the application of numerical indices. However, usually these indices are used for the whole frequency range of the recorded data, returning a single number. Such an approach is inaccurate and may lead to mistakes in the interpretation. An alternative quality assessment is based on the estimation of the local values of the quality index with the moving window method. In this paper, the authors analyse the influence of the width of the input data window for four numerical indices. The analysis is based on the data measured on the transformer with deformations introduced into the winding and also for a 10 MVA transformer measured under industrial conditions. For the first unit the analysis is performed for various window widths and for various extents of the deformation, while in the case of... [more]

Keywords: ANSYS, flow model, heavy oil, oil-field pipeline, rheology
With the depletion of traditional energy resources, the share of heavy-oil production has been increasing recently. According to some estimates, their reserves account for 80% of the world’s oil resources. Costs for extraction of heavy oil and natural bitumen are 3−4 times higher than the costs of extracting light oil, which is due not only to higher density and viscosity indicators but also to insufficient development of equipment and technologies for the extraction, transportation, and processing of such oils. Currently, a single pipeline system is used to pump both light and heavy oil. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the features of the heavy-oil pumping mode. This paper presents mathematical models of heavy-oil flow in oil-field pipelines. The rheological properties of several heavy-oil samples were determined by experiments. The dependencies obtained were used as input data for a simulation model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The modeling condit... [more]
