Loading Performance of a Novel Shearer Drum Applied to Thin Coal Seams
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: discrete element method, drum loading performance, helix angle matching, rotational speed matching, two-segment differential rotational speed drum
The poor loading performance of shearer drums restricts the development and production efficiency of coal in thin coal seams. Changing operation and structural parameters can improve the drum’s loading performance to some extent, but the effect is not obvious. A two-segment differential rotational speed drum (TDRSD) was proposed after analyzing the drum’s influence mechanism on coal particles. To further reveal the drum’s coal loading principle, the velocity, particles distribution, and loading rate were analyzed. The effect of the matching relationship of the rotational speed and helix angle between the front and rear drum are also discussed. The results show that a lower front drum rotational speed had a positive impact on improving the loading performance, and the loading rate first increases and then decreases with the increase in rear drum rotational speed. The optimal loading performance was obtained in the range 60−67.5 rpm. The front drum’s helix angle had no evident effect on... [more]

Analysis of Crack Initiation and Propagation Thresholds of Inclined Cracks under High-Pressure Grouting in Ordovician Limestone
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: crack instability, critical grouting pressure, inclined crack, open-mode crack
Control of the grouting pressure within the critical grouting pressure for crack propagation in Ordovician limestone can not only ensure grout penetration length, but also prevent the risk of creating an artificial water channel. Based on the fracture mechanics theory, a formula was proposed to calculate the critical grouting pressure of mixed mode I-II cracks in Ordovician limestone. The necessary conditions for tilted crack opening, the rationality of the existing empirical value of the maximum allowable grouting pressure was investigated based on the mechanical model. The RFPA2D-Flow numerical simulation software was used to evaluate the deduced theory. The research results show that the deduced theoretical calculation formula of the critical grouting pressure agrees with the numerical simulation results; when the mixed mode I-II fracture initiation occurs, the grouting pressure exceeds the perpendicular stress of the overlying rock; the greater the density of the overlying rock mas... Sorption-Enhanced Water-Gas Shift Reaction for Synthesis Gas Production from Pure CO: Investigation of Sorption Parameters and Reactor Configurations
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CO2 sorption, divided section packing, jet fuel production, potassium-promoted hydrotalcite, Power-to-Liquid, sorption-enhanced water-gas shift reaction, synthesis gas production
A sorption-enhanced water-gas shift (SEWGS) system providing CO2-free synthesis gas (CO + H2) for jet fuel production from pure CO was studied. The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction was catalyzed by a commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst and carried out with in-situ CO2 removal on a 20 wt% potassium-promoted hydrotalcite-derived sorbent. Catalyst activity was investigated in a fixed bed tubular reactor. Different sorbent materials and treatments were characterized by CO2 chemisorption among other analysis methods to choose a suitable sorbent. Cyclic breakthrough tests in an isothermal packed bed microchannel reactor (PBMR) were performed at significantly lower modified residence times than those reported in literature. A parameter study gave an insight into the effect of pressure, adsorption feed composition, desorption conditions, as well as reactor configuration on breakthrough delay and adsorbed amount of CO2. Special attention was paid to the steam content. The significance of water durin... [more]

Keywords: analytic hierarchy process (AHP), geographical information system (GIS), multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), PV system location, the order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS)
In this study, optimal decision-making process in photovoltaic (PV) system location selection in Saudi Arabia is described. First, to identify the criteria that influence the decision of selecting a suitable location for the PV system, the geographical information system (GIS)-based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach is used. Next, to assess the weights of the criteria that present different aspects of the investigated locations, four major criteria and 11 sub-criteria are proposed, and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to develop comparison decision matrix. Finally, the order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) technique evaluates and classifies 17 cities (such as Riyadh, Jeddah) in Saudi Arabia. The result shows that Tabuk city in the northern of Saudi Arabia is the best location. Among the 17 cities, the performance score of seven cities is above or equal 80%, and Tabuk city has the highest score with 87%. This analytical approach could contribu... [more]

A Study on the Numerical Performances of Diffuse Interface Methods for Simulation of Melting and Their Practical Consequences
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: consistency, diffuse interface methods, energy formulation, melting, numerical performances, phase change
This work is the final one in a series of three papers devoted to shedding light on the performance of fixed grid methods, also known as enthalpy methods, for the modeling and the simulation of solid/liquid phase transition. After a detailed analysis of five of the most common enthalpy methods for conductive-dominated and conductive-convective problems and then a study concerning the formulation of the advective term in the energy balance equation, the aim of the present paper is to extend the above-mentioned studies by an investigation of the numerical performance. Such a goal is achieved by comparing the required iterations and, even if it is shown to be only a rough guide, the simulation time of each method, for a great variety of parameter variations. In terms of contribution, the main conclusions of this overall work are to demonstrate that almost all solvers give similar results when stable. However, there are still distinctive deviations with the experiments, highlighting the ne... [more]

A Novel Building Temperature Simulation Approach Driven by Expanding Semantic Segmentation Training Datasets with Synthetic Aerial Thermal Images
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: building envelopes, data hunger, segmentation datasets, thermal image simulation
Multi-sensor imagery data has been used by researchers for the image semantic segmentation of buildings and outdoor scenes. Due to multi-sensor data hunger, researchers have implemented many simulation approaches to create synthetic datasets, and they have also synthesized thermal images because such thermal information can potentially improve segmentation accuracy. However, current approaches are mostly based on the laws of physics and are limited to geometric models’ level of detail (LOD), which describes the overall planning or modeling state. Another issue in current physics-based approaches is that thermal images cannot be aligned to RGB images because the configurations of a virtual camera used for rendering thermal images are difficult to synchronize with the configurations of a real camera used for capturing RGB images, which is important for segmentation. In this study, we propose an image translation approach to directly convert RGB images to simulated thermal images for expa... [more]

Coordination of Multiple Electric Vehicle Aggregators for Peak Shaving and Valley Filling in Distribution Feeders
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active distribution networks, electric vehicles, peak shaving, smart grid, valley filling, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
In this paper, a coordination method of multiple electric vehicle (EV) aggregators has been devised to flatten the system load profile. The proposed scheme tends to reduce the peak demand by discharging EVs and fills the valley gap through EV charging in the off-peak period. Upper level fair proportional power distribution to the EV aggregators is exercised by the system operator which provides coordination among the aggregators based on their aggregated energy demand or capacity. The lower level min max objective function is implemented at each aggregator to distribute power to the EVs. Each aggregator ensures that the EV customers’ driving requirements are not relinquished in spite of their employment to support the grid. The scheme has been tested on IEEE 13-node distribution system and an actual distribution system situated in Seoul, Republic of Korea whilst utilizing actual EV mobility data. The results show that the system load profile is smoothed by the coordination of aggregato... [more]

Impact of Intake and Exhaust Ducts on the Recovery Efficiency of Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ducts, heat recovery ventilator (HRV), recovery efficiency
The heat recovery efficiency of ventilation systems utilizing heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) depends not only on the heat recovery efficiency of the HRV units themselves but also on the intake and exhaust ducts that connect the HRV units to the outside environment. However, these ducts are often neglected in heat loss calculations, as their impact on the overall heat recovery efficiency of HRV systems is often not understood and, to the knowledge of the authors, a mathematical model for the overall heat recovery efficiency of HRV systems that accounts for these ducts has not been published. In this research, a mathematical model for the overall heat recovery efficiency of HRV systems that accounts for the intake and exhaust ducts was derived and validated using real-life data. The model-predicted decrease in heat recovery efficiency due to the ducts was in reasonable agreement (relative error within 20%) with the real-life measurements. The results suggest that utilizing this model a... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: degradation mode, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, equivalent circuit model, lithium-ion battery, quantitative analysis
The degradation mode is of great significance for reducing the complexity of research on the aging mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries. Previous studies have grouped the aging mechanisms into three degradation modes: conductivity loss (CL), loss of lithium inventory (LLI) and loss of active material (LAM). Combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), degradation modes can be identified and quantified non-destructively. This paper aims to extend the application of this method to more operating conditions and explore the impact of external factors on the quantitative results. Here, we design a quantification method using two equivalent circuit models to cope with the different trends of impedance spectra during the aging process. Under four conditions, the changing trends of the quantitative values of the three degradation modes are explored and the effects of the state of charge (SoC) and excitation current during EIS measurement are statistically analyzed. Compensation Method for Estimating the State of Charge of Li-Polymer Batteries Using Multiple Long Short-Term Memory Networks Based on the Extended Kalman Filter
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management systems, ensemble network, extended Kalman filter, long short-term memory network, state of charge
Many battery state of charge (SOC) estimation methods have been studied for decades; however, it is still difficult to precisely estimate SOC because it is nonlinear and affected by many factors, including the battery state and charge−discharge conditions. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is generally used for SOC estimation, however its accuracy can decrease owing to the uncertain and inaccurate parameters of battery models and various factors with different time scales affecting the SOC. Herein, a SOC estimation method based on the EKF is proposed to obtain robust accuracy, in which the errors are compensated by a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The proposed approach trains the errors of the EKF results, and the accurate SOC is estimated by applying calibration values corresponding to the condition of the battery and its load profiles with the help of LSTM. Furthermore, a multi-LSTM structure is implemented, and it adopts the ensemble average to guarantee estimation accuracy.... [more]

Towards Fossil Free Cities—A Supermarket, Greenhouse & Dwelling Integrated Energy System as an Alternative to District Heating: Amsterdam Case Study
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Amsterdam, carbon accounting, CO2 emissions, energy transition, FEW nexus, solar energy, sustainable city, synergetic design, urban farming
The municipality of Amsterdam has set stringent carbon emission reduction targets: 55% by 2030 and 95% by 2050 for the entire metropolitan area. One of the key strategies to achieve these goals entails a disconnection of all households from the natural gas supply by 2040 and connecting them to the existing city-wide heat grid. This paper aims to demonstrate the value of considering local energy potentials at the city block level by exploring the potential of a rooftop greenhouse solar collector as a renewable alternative to centralized district heating. An existing supermarket and an ATES component complete this local energy synergy. The thermal energy balance of the three urban functions were determined and integrated into hourly energy profiles to locate and quantify the simultaneous and mismatched discrepancies between energy excess and demand. Subject: Materials
Keywords: natural convection effects, numerical simulations, Organic Rankine Cycle, phase change materials, solar energy, thermal energy storage
Nowadays, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is one of the most promising technologies analyzed for electrical power generation from low-temperature heat such as renewable energy sources (RES), especially solar energy. Because of the solar source variation throughout the day, additional Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems can be employed to store the energy surplus saved during the daytime, in order to use it at nighttime or when meteorological conditions are adverse. In this context, latent heat stored in phase-change transition by Phase Change Materials (PCM) allows them to stock larger amounts of energy because of the larger latent energy values as compared to the specific heat capacity. In this study, a thermal analysis of a square PCM for a solar ORC is carried out, considering four different boundary conditions that refer to different situations. Furthermore, differences in including or not natural convection effects in the model are shown. Governing equations for the PCM are written w... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, external gear pump, fluid power, incomplete filling, pressure ripple
The paper presents the computational fluid dynamics simulation of an external gear pump for fluid power applications. The aim of the study is to test the capability of the model to evaluate the pressure in a tooth space for the entire shaft revolution and the minimum inlet pressure for the complete filling. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, complex terrain, numerical weather prediction, wind power forecasting
In the past two decades, wind energy has been under fast development worldwide. The dramatic increase of wind power penetration in electricity production has posed a big challenge to grid integration due to the high uncertainty of wind power. Accurate real-time forecasts of wind farm power outputs can help to mitigate the problem. Among the various techniques developed for wind power forecasting, the hybridization of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and machine learning (ML) techniques such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) are attracting many researchers world-wide nowadays, because it has the potential to yield more accurate forecasts. In this paper, two hybrid NWP and ANN models for wind power forecasting over a highly complex terrain are proposed. The developed models have a fine temporal resolution and a sufficiently large prediction horizon (>6 h ahead). Model 1 directly forecasts the energy production of each wind turbine. A Thermodynamic Analysis of Heavy Hydrocarbons Reforming for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Application as a Part of Hybrid Energy Systems
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Associated Petroleum Gas, equilibrium characteristics, parametric equation formalism, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Steam Reforming
A thermodynamical analysis of steam reforming of Associated Petroleum Gas (APG) was conducted in the presented research. The reforming process of heavy hydrocarbons for small scale power generation is a complex issue. One of the main issues is that a set of undesired chemical reactions deposit solid carbon and, consequently, block the reactor’s catalytic property. The experimental investigation is crucial to design an APG reforming reactor. However, a numerical simulation is a key tool to design a safe operating condition. Designing the next generation of reactors requires a complex coupling of mathematical models, kinetics, and thermodynamic analysis. In practice, the thermodynamic analysis should be applied in each control volume to assure realistic results. This is not easy to apply in practice since both thermodynamic analysis and CFD modeling can be time-consuming. In this paper, the authors suggest using a mathematical formalism called Parametric Equation Formalism to calculate t... [more]

In this paper, we propose a new cloud ESS sharing technique that allows capacity P2P transactions among users. Since cloud ESS is a virtual facility that is linked to an actual ESS, it is easy for users to sell the unused storage capacity to other users or to buy additional capacity from other users during operation. We also propose a system that encourages users to completely entrust the cloud ESS operator and share the extra benefit with the operator and other users. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic controller, maximum power point tracking, Optimization, q-learning, reinforcement learning, state–action-reward-state–action
In this paper, two universal reinforcement learning methods are considered to solve the problem of maximum power point tracking for photovoltaics. Both methods exhibit fast achievement of the MPP under varying environmental conditions and are applicable in different PV systems. The only required knowledge of the PV system are the open-circuit voltage, the short-circuit current and the maximum power, all under STC, which are always provided by the manufacturer. Both methods are compared to a Fuzzy Logic Controller and the universality of the proposed methods is highlighted. After the implementation and the validation of proper performance of both methods, two evolutionary optimization algorithms (Big Bang—Big Crunch and Genetic Algorithm) are applied. The results demonstrate that both methods achieve higher energy production and in both methods the time for tracking the MPP is reduced, after the application of both evolutionary algorithms.

A Model for Predicting Arsenic Volatilization during Coal Combustion Based on the Ash Fusion Temperature and Coal Characteristic
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: arsenic, ash fusion temperature (AFT), coal combustion, model, vaporization
Arsenic emission from coal combustion power plants has attracted increasing attention due to its high toxicity. In this study, it was found that there was a close relationship between the ash fusion temperature (AFT) and arsenic distribution based on the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation. In addition to the AFT, coal characteristics and combustion temperature also considerably affected the distribution and morphology of arsenic during coal combustion. Thus, an arsenic volatilization model based on the AFT, coal type, and combustion temperature during coal combustion was developed. To test the accuracy of the model, blending coal combustion experiments were carried out. The experimental results and published data proved that the developed arsenic volatilization model can accurately predict arsenic emission during co-combustion, and the errors of the predicted value for bituminous and lignite were 2.3−9.8%, with the exception of JingLong (JL) coal when combusted at 1500 °C.
