April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: emission mitigation, energy management, microgrid, Optimization, pump-hydro storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
In this study, a standalone hybrid wind turbine (WT)/photovoltaic (PV)/biomass/pump-hydro-storage energy system was designed and optimized based on technical, economic, and environmental parameters to provide the load demand with an objective function of minimum cost of energy (COE). The constraints of the proposed approach are the loss of power supply probability, and the excess energy fraction. The proposed approach allows the combination of different sources of energy to provide the best configuration of the hybrid system. Therefore, the proposed system was optimized and compared with a WT/PV/biomass/battery storage-based hybrid energy system. This study proposes three different optimization algorithms for sizing and minimizing the COE, including the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), firefly algorithm (FF) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the optimization procedure was executed using MATLAB software. The outcomes of these algorithms are contrasted to select the most effec... [more]

Marek Stawowy, Adam Rosiński, Jacek Paś, Tomasz Klimczak
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hospital, reliability, supply system, system quality
The article presents issues related to the determination of the continuity quality of power supply (CQoPS) for hospital electrical devices. The model describing CQoPS takes into account power redundancy. The uncertainty modeling method based on the certainty factor (CF) of the hypothesis was used to establish the single-valued CQoPS factor. CQoPS modeling takes into account multidimensional quality models and physical stages of power. The quality models take into account seven dimensions that make up CQoPS (availability, appropriate amount, power supply reliability, power quality, assurance, responsiveness, security). The model of power stages includes five of these stages (power generation, delivery to recipient, distribution by recipient, delivery to device, power-consuming device). To date, when designing hospital power systems, the applied reliability indicators revealed limitations because they do not consider all the possible factors influencing the power continuity. Estimating t... [more]

Yan Wu, Wei-Tao Wu
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, non-Newtonian fluid, particle flux, particles transport, solid–fluid suspension
A two-way coupling particle flux model is proposed for studying the multi-component solid−fluid suspension. The suspension mixture is treated as a non-linear single-phase fluid and the migration of the solid particles is modeled by a particle flux equation. The proposed particle flux model takes the effects of the particle migration on the transport of the suspension’s momentum and internal energy into account. Two benchmark problems are calculated to study the performance of the proposed particle flux model, i.e., flow in a sudden expansion straight channel and flow between two rotating cylinders. It is found that the particle flux model converges without numerical stability issue with the commonly used PISO-SIMPLE transient solver, and the effect of the particle migration is evident on both velocity profile and temperature distribution.

Keywords: energy harvesting, maximum power point, maximum power point tracker, metaheuristic, random walk
During its operation, a photovoltaic system may encounter many practical issues such as receiving uniform or non-uniform irradiance caused mainly by partial shading. Under uniform irradiance a photovoltaic panel has a single maximum power point. Conversely under non-uniform irradiance, a photovoltaic panel has several local maximum power points and a single global maximum power point. To maximize energy production, a maximum power point tracker algorithm is commonly implemented to achieve the maximum power operating point of the photovoltaic panel. However, the performance of the algorithm will depend on operating conditions such as variation in irradiance. Presently, most of existing maximum power point tracker algorithms work only in a single condition: either uniform or non-uniform irradiance. This paper proposes a new maximum power point tracker algorithm for photovoltaic power generation that is designed to work under uniform and partial shading irradiance conditions. Additionally... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design of experiments, Gaussian process, heat transfer coefficients, multi-fidelity surrogate, turbine blades
This paper proposes a multi-fidelity surrogate (MFS) model for predicting the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the turbine blades. First, the low-fidelity (LF) and high-fidelity (HF) surrogates were built using LF-data from numerical simulation and HF-data from an experiment. To evaluate the prediction by these two surrogates, the averaged HTC distribution on the endwall of the gas turbine blade predicted by these two surrogates was compared for input variables as Reynolds number (Re) and boundary layer (BL) thickness. This shows that the prediction by LF surrogate is saturated with an increase in Re, while has monotonic behavior with an increase in BL thickness, which is contrary in general. The prediction by HF surrogate is linear with Re and is increased with BL thickness up to 30 mm and then decreased after 30 mm. Following this, a one-dimensional projection of the two-dimensional HTC distribution was presented to show the prediction tendency of the surrogates by varying the Re a... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Hydrogen, long-term operation (LTO), phosphine ligand, ruthenium complex, Use-Store-Reuse (USR)
Commercial use of H2 production catalysts requires a repeated use/stop/store and reuse of the catalyst. Ideally, this cycle should be possible under ambient O2. Herein we exemplify the concept of Use-Store-Reuse (USR) of a (Ru-phosphine) catalyst in a biphasic catalytic system, for H2 production via dehydrogenation of HCOOH. The catalytic system can operate uninterrupted for at least four weeks, including storage and reuse cycles, with negligible loss of its catalytic efficiency. The catalytic system consisted of a RuP(CH2CH2PPh2)3 (i.e. RuPP3) in (tri-glyme/water) system, using KOH as a cocatalyst, to promote HCOOH deprotonation. In a USR cycle of 1 week, followed by storage for three weeks under ambient air and reuse, the system achieved in total TONs > 90,000 and TOFs > 4000 h−1. Thus, for the first time, a USR concept with a readily available stable ruthenium catalyst is presented, operating without any protection from O2 or light, and able to retain its catalytic performance.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: desalination, design optimization, double slope solar still, Modelling, sensitivity analysis, solar thermal energy
This study presents a novel, highly detailed, and accurate modelling method for calculation of the total annual solar thermal energy received by a double-slope solar still. The model is further utilized for sensitivity analysis and optimization with the help of Genetic Algorithm and TOPSIS methods. The model reveals that the main parameters that can independently affect solar energy input are the basin length, width, tilt angle, surface azimuth angle, and the glass covers’ inclination angle. The sensitivity of the annual solar energy input to all these parameters is analyzed. Moreover, all the parameters are chosen to be involved in the optimization problem. Sensitivity analysis results show that except for basin azimuth angle all other parameters significantly affect the amount of energy input to the solar still. Genetic Algorithm identified 60 optimum sets of parameters, one of which was selected by the TOPSIS method. The optimum values for the basin width, length, tilt and azimuth a... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: concrete under tension, FEM, high-strength bolt shear connector, push-off test, shear bearing capacity
High-strength bolted shear connectors (HSBSCs), which can be demounted easily and efficiently during deconstruction, are recommended to replace the conventional steel studs in steel−concrete composite beams (SCCBs) to meet the requirements of sustainable development. The existing investigations on the behavior of HSBSCs mainly focus on the positive moment area of composite beams, in which the concrete slab is in compress condition. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) was developed to investigate the performance of HSBSCs subjected to inverse push-off loading. Material nonlinearities and the interactions among all components were included in the FEM. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed FEM were initially validated against the available push-off test results. Load-carrying capacity and load−slip response of the HSBSCs under inverse push-off loading were further studied by the verified FEM. A parametric study was carried out to determine the influence of... [more]

Tapiwa Venge, Cuthbert Nyamupangedengu
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-capacitor model, ABC model, frequent dependent mechanisms, partial discharges, statistical time lag, supply voltage frequency, surface conductivity
The supply voltage frequency effect on partial discharge (PD) phenomena has continued to draw research interest. Although most high voltage equipment operates at power frequency (50/60 Hz), testing is often done at different frequencies for various reasons. Despite some agreements and inconsistencies for the research findings of PD activity’s frequency dependence, there has been consensus on the recognition of the discharge mechanism parameters that influence how the supply voltage frequency affects PD activity. These parameters include statistical time lag, discharge area surface conductivity, and the residual charge decay. In this paper, a 3-capacitor model (ABC) is used to simulate how the changes in the discharge mechanism parameters influence PD characteristics as a function of the supply voltage frequency. The findings are that the phase-resolved partial discharge pattern (PRPDP) and PD repetition rate (PDRR) characteristics are more sensitive to variations in the probability of... [more]

Robert Żelazny, Paweł Jabłoński, Tomasz Szczegielniak
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric heating of railway turnouts, induction heating of turnouts, safety of railway traffic
Devices for electric heating of railroad turnouts are elements of the railway infrastructure protecting railroad turnouts against blocking them by snow and ice in winter. They often operate based on the principle of resistance heating but other solutions are also emerging. In this paper, one of such new solutions using the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction was presented and tested under various conditions. In comparison with traditional resistive heaters, the inductive ones offer heat distribution directly to ice and snow without intermediation of rails. Moreover, they can use a wide range spectrum of frequency to shorten the melting time. The resistive and inductive devices were tested with respect to melting time, temperatures and energy consumption. It follows that the induction-based device offers much lower energy consumption at a level of 30%−60% of that by resistive heater. The details depend on frequency used, initial temperature and number of induction devices of action... [more]

Keywords: Bluetooth, converter, light-emitting diode (LED), power factor correction (PFC), power supply, street-light, wireless dimming
Light-emitting diode (LED) has the characteristics of environmental protection and energy saving, having become the lighting source of a new generation of street-light lamps. The traditional two-stage power supply for providing an LED street-light lamp is composed of an AC-DC converter with a power-factor-correction (PFC) function at the front stage and a DC-DC converter at the rear stage. The two-stage power supply for an LED street-light lamp has a large number of electronic components and costs, and the circuit efficiency is not high. Therefore, this paper presents a novel single-stage high power factor AC-DC power supply for providing an LED street-light lamp featuring soft-switching and Bluetooth wireless dimming capability through using smart tablets or smartphones to remote control the output power of the LED street-light lamp for achieving energy-saving benefits. The proposed AC-DC LED power supply integrates an interleaved buck converter circuit with coupled inductors and a ha... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field measurement, fracturing roofs to maintain entry (FRME), numerical simulation, side abutment pressure, strata movement
Fracturing roofs to maintain entry (FRME) is a novel longwall mining method, which has been widely used in China, leading a new mining revolution. In order to research the change law of side abutment pressure and movement law of overlying strata when using the FRME, a new abutment pressure monitoring device, namely, the flexible detection unit (FDU), is developed and is applied in the field. The monitoring results show that compared with the head entry (also called the non-splitting entry), the peak value of the lateral abutment pressure in the tail entry (also termed the splitting entry) is reduced by 17.2% on average, and the fluctuation degree becomes smaller. Then, finite difference software FLAC3D is used to simulate the stress change of the solid coal on both sides of the panel. The simulation results show that the side abutment pressure of the tail entry decreases obviously, which is consistent with the measured results. Comprehensive analysis points out that after splitting and... [more]

Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, electromechanical coupling, high-voltage direct current, shaft torsion, synchronous generator
With the development of large-scale new energy, the wind−thermal bundled system transmitted via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) has become the main method to solve the problem of wind power consumption. At the same time, the problem of subsynchronous oscillation among wind power generators, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), and synchronous generators (SGs) has become increasingly prominent. According to the dynamic interaction among doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs), HVDC, and SGs, a linearization model of DFIGs and SGs transmitted via HVDC is established, and the influence of the electromagnetic transient of wind turbines and HVDC on the electromechanical transient processes of SGs is studied. Using the method of additional excitation signal injection, the influence of the main factors of DFIG on the damping characteristics of each torsional mode of SG is analyzed, including control parameters and operation conditions when the capacity of HVDC is fixed. The mechanism of the... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, EGPs, external gear pumps, flow non-uniformity, flow ripple, fluid-borne noise, lumped parameter numerical simulation
In this paper, an innovative solution to minimize noise emission, acting on the flow ripple, in a prototype External Gear Pump (EGP) is presented. Firstly, a new tool capable to completely simulate this pump’s typologies, called EgeMATor, is presented; the hydraulic model, adopted for the simulation, is based on a lumped parameter method using a control volume approach. Starting from the pump drawing, thanks to different subroutines developed in different environments interconnected, it is possible to analyze an EGP. Results have been compared with the outputs of a three-dimensional CFD numerical model built up using a commercial code, already used with success by the authors. In the second section, an innovative solution to reduce the flow ripple is implemented. This technology is called Alternative Capacitive Volumes (ACV) and works by controlling and uniformizing the reverse flow, performing a consistent reduction of flow non-uniformity amplitude. In particular, a high reduction of... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, Benders decomposition, K-means clustering, life cycle cost, microgrid, rainflow counting algorithm, stochastic unit commitment
As renewable penetration increases in microgrids (MGs), the use of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) has become indispensable for optimal MG operation. Although BESSs are advantageous for economic and stable MG operation, their life degradation should be considered for maximizing cost savings. This paper proposes an optimal BESS scheduling for MGs to solve the stochastic unit commitment problem, considering the uncertainties in renewables and load. Through the proposed BESS scheduling, the life degradation of BESSs is minimized, and MG operation becomes economically feasible. To address the aforementioned uncertainties, a scenario-based method was applied using Monte Carlo simulation and the K-means clustering algorithm for scenario generation and reduction, respectively. By implementing the rainflow-counting algorithm, the BESS charge/discharge state profile was obtained. To formulate the cycle aging stress function and examine the life cycle cost (LCC) of a BESS more realistical... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: cooling demand, COVID-19, electricity demand, social distancing, temperature
To mitigate the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), governments around the world have imposed social distancing policies ranging from minor social activity suspensions to full curfews. These social distancing policies have altered electricity consumption behaviors in numerous countries. Many governments imposed strict social distancing policies during a temperature transition season where the impacts of temperature variations are particularly important for the operation of the electric grid. This paper studies how strict social distancing policies affect the relationship between electricity demand and ambient temperature. We first review the expected short- and long-term impacts of social distancing on the electricity demand. We then present a case study on the electricity demand of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during strict social distancing policies. The results of this case study suggest that strict social distancing policies result in a stronger correlation between temperatu... [more]

Keywords: biogas, micro gas turbine, micro steam turbine, net capacity factor, solar hybridization
This study conducted a detailed technical analysis of small-scale solar−bio-hybrid power generation systems using Rankine (steam turbine) and Brayton (gas turbine) cycles. Thermodynamic models were developed to characterize the state of working fluid and select the most suitable solar collection technology for individual power generation systems. Net capacity factor of power generation and utilization efficiencies of solar and biogas energy were used as parameters to evaluate energy generation and conclude the preferred system configuration. The analysis concluded that the steam turbine system has better global efficiency (67.7%) than the gas turbine system (55.7%), while the gas turbine system has better electricity generation efficiency (27.0%) than that (5.6%) of the steam turbine system. The effects of different climates on the selection of suitable hybrid systems were also investigated to delineate suitability and feasibility of different hybrid systems. In addition, the method us... [more]
Optimal Voltage Control in MV Network with Distributed Generation
Piotr Kacejko, Paweł Pijarski
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, heuristic optimization, medium voltage, power losses, voltage control
The article presents the concept of voltage control in a medium-voltage network, using the classical control of a HV/MV (High Voltage/Medium Voltage) transformer and active participation of distributed generation sources. The proposed solution is based on the results of the optimization process. The objective function is considered as a single-criterion—the voltage quality indicator or value of power losses in the network, and optionally as two-criteria (voltage quality and losses combined, with appropriately selected weight factors). The analysis carried out for random selection of independent variables, using the original heuristic algorithm, indicated a very high efficiency of the proposed control process, compared to the traditional approach. A significant improvement in the voltage quality index and reduction of losses was found, which justifies the advisability of looking for new solutions in the field of voltage control in MV networks, taking into account active participation of... Meteorological data are extensively used to perform environmental learning. Soft Computing (SC) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques represent a valuable support in many research areas, but require datasets containing information related to the topic under study. Such datasets are not always available in an appropriate format and its preparation and pre-processing implies a lot of time and effort by researchers. This paper presents a novel software tool with a user-friendly GUI to create datasets by means of management and data integration of meteorological observations from two data sources: the National Data Buoy Center and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and for Atmospheric Research Reanalysis Project. Such datasets can be created using buoys and reanalysis data through customisable procedures, in terms of temporal resolution, predictive and objective variables, and can be used by SC and ML methodologies for prediction tasks (classification or regression). Subject: Other
Keywords: multiphase systems, pulse width modulation, square-type matrix converters
This article presents three variants of the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) for the Double Square Multiphase type Conventional Matrix Converters (DSM-CMC) supplying loads with the open-end winding. The first variant of PWM offers the ability to obtain zero value of the common-mode voltage at the load’s terminals and applies only six switches within the modulation period. The second proposal archives for less Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the generated load voltage. The third variant of modulation concerns maximizing the voltage transfer ratio, minimizing the number of switching, and the common-mode voltage cancellation. The discussed modulations are based on the concept of sinusoidal voltage quadrature signals, which can be an effective alternative to the classic space-vector approach. In the proposed approach, the geometrical arrangement of basic vectors needed to synthesize output voltages is built from the less number of vectors, which is equal to the number of the matrix converte... Subject: Environment
Keywords: GDP, GHG emissions, labor productivity, labor utilization
The effects of the labor market on environmental issues are an actual problem at the global level, and recommendations are required to achieve equilibrium between labor productivity and environmental protection. Considering the ecological limits of work and the necessity of reducing the working time to mitigate GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, this paper aims to assess the impact of the labor market on GHG emissions in the EU-28 countries. Using panel data models for 2007−2019, a positive effect of working time for employed persons on GHG emissions was detected. Labor productivity has a positive impact on emissions for most of the developed countries in the EU (old member states), while the effect is negative in the case of most of the new member states, which suggests that more efforts should be made by old member states to correlate labor productivity with a sustainable level of GHG emissions. As a novelty for research in the field, we assessed also the effect of targeted labor utiliz... [more]

In recent years, machine learning applications have received increasing interest from power system researchers. The successful performance of these applications is dependent on the availability of extensive and diverse datasets for the training and validation of machine learning frameworks. However, power systems operate at quasi-steady-state conditions for most of the time, and the measurements corresponding to these states provide limited novel knowledge for the development of machine learning applications. In this paper, a data mining approach based on optimization techniques is proposed for filtering root-mean-square (RMS) voltage profiles and identifying unusual measurements within triggerless power quality datasets. Then, datasets with equal representation between event and non-event observations are created so that machine learning algorithms can extract useful insights from the rare but important event observations. The proposed framework is demonstrated and validated with both... [more]
Mitigating the Piston Effect in High-Speed Hyperloop Transportation: A Study on the Use of Aerofoils

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: aerodynamic design, Hyperloop, optimization of airflow, plunger effect
The Hyperloop is a concept for the high-speed ground transportation of passengers traveling in pods at transonic speeds in a partially evacuated tube. It consists of a low-pressure tube with capsules traveling at both low and high speeds throughout the length of the tube. When a high-speed system travels through a low-pressure tube with a constrained diameter such as in the case of the Hyperloop, it becomes an aerodynamically challenging problem. Airflow tends to get choked at the constrained areas around the pod, creating a high-pressure region at the front of the pod, a phenomenon referred to as the “piston effect.” Papers exploring potential solutions for the piston effect are scarce. In this study, using the Reynolds-Average Navier−Stokes (RANS) technique for three-dimensional computational analysis, the aerodynamic performance of a Hyperloop pod inside a vacuum tube is studied. Further, aerofoil-shaped fins are added to the aeroshell as a potential way to mitigate the piston effec... [more]

Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, flexibility, Genetic Algorithm, production line, tasks scheduling
The scheduling of tasks in a production line is a complex problem that needs to take into account several constraints, such as product deadlines and machine limitations. With innovative focus, the main constraint that will be addressed in this paper, and that usually is not considered, is the energy consumption cost in the production line. For that, an approach based on genetic algorithms is proposed and implemented. The use of local energy generation, especially from renewable sources, and the possibility of having multiple energy providers allow the user to manage its consumption according to energy prices and energy availability. The proposed solution takes into account the energy availability of renewable sources and energy prices to optimize the scheduling of a production line using a genetic algorithm with multiple constraints. The proposed algorithm also enables a production line to participate in demand response events by shifting its production, by using the flexibility of pro... [more]
