Decomposition Analysis of the Evolution of the Local Energy System as a Tool to Assess the Effect of Local Actions: Methodology and Example of Malmö, Sweden
Isabel Azevedo, Vítor Leal
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy and climate policy, local authorities, local energy planning, policy evaluation
This paper proposes the use of decomposition analysis to assess the effect of local energy-related actions towards climate change mitigation, and thus improve policy evaluation and planning at the local level. The assessment of the impact of local actions has been a challenge, even from a strictly technical perspective. This happens because the total change observed is the result of multiple factors influencing local energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, many of them not even influenced by local authorities. A methodology was developed, based on a recently developed decomposition model, that disaggregates the total observed changes in the local energy system into multiple causes/effects (including local socio-economic evolution, technology evolution, higher-level governance frame and local actions). The proposed methodology, including the quantification of the specific effect associated with local actions, is demonstrated with the case study of the municipality of Malmö (Swede... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated and distributed winding synchronous reluctance machines, finite element-based electromagnetic optimization, low-voltage automotive engine cooling systems, permanent magnet synchronous machines
In this paper a side-by-side comparison between synchronous reluctance machines (SynRMs) with concentrated and distributed windings is performed. The characteristics, parameters, and the installation space of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with concentrated windings used in a 13 V automotive cooling fan system (CFMs) are used as requirements and specifications. For that, eight SynRMs with different stator and rotor topologies are investigated and optimized by means of FE-based electromagnetic optimization. Knowing the challenges associated with the development of mechanically stable SynRM rotor structures, for two selected cross-sections in view of being prototyped, designs checks are performed to ensure robust operation at up to two times the required operating speed. The simulated results were verified by means of measurements performed using two different types of loading systems, i.e., with the real ventilator and using a DC machine as a load. Based on this, the rela... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: angle tracking observer, generalized predictive control, resolver, resolver-to-digital converter, tracking
High-performance motor drives that operate in harsh conditions require an accurate and robust angular position measurement to correctly estimate the speed and reduce the torque ripple produced by angular estimation error. For that reason, a resolver is used in motor drives as a position sensor due to its robustness. A resolver-to-digital converter (RDC) is an observer used to get the angular position from the resolver signals. Most RDCs are based on angle tracking observers (ATOs). On the other hand, generalized predictive control (GPC) has become a powerful tool in developing controllers and observers for industrial applications. However, no GPC-based RDC with zero steady-state error during constant speed operation has been proposed. This paper proposes an RDC based on the second-order difference GPC (SOD-GPC). In SOD-GPC, the second-order difference operator is applied to design a GPC model with two embedded integrators. Thus, the SOD-GPC is used to design a type-II ATO whose steady-... [more]

Keywords: active heating, deepwater, flow assurance, flowline, heat management, passive insulation
The enormous cost of handling the challenges of flow assurance in subsea wells, flowlines, and risers, especially in deepwater applications, has necessitated a proactive approach to prevent their risk of occurrence. To ensure that transportation of the hydrocarbon is economical and efficient from the subsea wellhead to the processing units, a flow assurance heat management system is relevant in the design and planning of a fluid transport system. Consequently, the advancement of new technologies to serve the increasing need by exploring the technologically challenging and hostile subsea fields is of great importance. A comparative study on heat management systems in flowlines was conducted from the top five publishers (Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and Sage) based on the number of publications to determine the level of work done by researchers in the last decade, the figures from the study showed the need for scientific research in the field of active heating. Keywords: dynamic performance, microgrid design, renewable energy integration, stand-alone microgrid, Technoeconomic Analysis
Stand-alone microgrids integrating renewable energy sources have emerged as an efficient energy solution for electrifying isolated sites, such as islands and remote areas. The design of a microgrid involves various influential factors, including technological development, economic feasibility, and environmental impacts, based on the conditions and regulations of a particular site. This paper proposes a comprehensive microgrid design framework based on power system analysis and techno-economic analysis. The obtained optimal microgrid configuration satisfies both the design objective and power system performance regulations. The proposed design approach focuses on using practical data and can adapt to any microgrid design problems based on the local characteristics of a specific site. The practicality and effectiveness of the design framework are validated by applying it to the design of a stand-alone microgrid for Deokjeok Island in South Korea. The case study results justify the import... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gallium nitride, magnetic-free converters, module-level converters, parallel architecture, partial shading, photovoltaic systems, switched capacitor converters
In this paper, a module-level photovoltaic (PV) architecture in parallel configuration is introduced for maximum power extraction, under partial shading (PS) conditions. For the first time, a non-regulated switched capacitor (SC) nX converter is a used at the PV-side conversion stage, whose purpose is just to multiply the PV voltage by a fixed ratio and accordingly reduce the input current. All the control functions, including the maximum power point tracking, are transferred to the grid-side inverter. The voltage-multiplied PV modules (VMPVs) are connected in parallel to a common DC-bus, which offers expandability to the system and eliminates the PS issues of a typical string architecture. The advantage of the proposed approach is that the PV-side converter is relieved of bulky capacitors, filters, controllers and voltage/current sensors, allowing for a more compact and efficient conversion stage, compared to conventional per-module systems, such as microinverters. The proposed config... [more]

Luminescent solar concentrators enhance the power output of solar cells through wave-guided luminescent emission and have great potential as building-integrated photovoltaics. Luminescent solar concentrators with a variety of geometries and absorbing−emitting materials have been reported in the literature. As the breadth of available experimental configurations continues to grow, there is an increasing need for versatile Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulation tools to analyze the performance of these devices for specific applications. This paper presents the framework for a Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulation tool that can be used to analyze a host of three-dimensional geometries. It incorporates custom radiative transport models to consider the effects of scattering from luminescent media, while simultaneously modeling absorption and luminescent emission. The model is validated using experimental results for three-dimensional planar and wedge-shaped luminescent solar concentrators employin... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cathode interlayers, conjugated polyelectrolytes, interfaces engineering, n-type semiconductor, naphthalene diimide, polymer solar cells
Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors have the advantages of synthetic versatility, strong absorption ability, and high thermal stability. These characteristics result in impressive power conversion efficiency values, but to further push both the performance and the stability of PSCs, the insertion of appropriate interlayers in the device structure remains mandatory. Herein, a naphthalene diimide-based cathode interlayer (NDI-OH) is synthesized with a facile three-step reaction and used as a cathode interlayer for fullerene and non-fullerene PSCs. This cationic polyelectrolyte exhibited good solubility in alcohol solvents, transparency in the visible range, self-doping behavior, and good film forming ability. All these characteristics allowed the increase in the devices’ power conversion efficiencies (PCE) both for fullerene and non-fullerene-based PSCs. The successful results make NDI-OH a promising cathode interlayer to apply in PSCs.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: backhauling, efficiency, emissions, Energy, environment, high-capacity, infrastructure, road network setup, technological updating, transportation, wood
Transportation of renewable wood is increasing, being a necessary operation in logistics of the environmentally sustainable forest industry. However, increasing the transportation capacity is a source of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to trucks’ emissions, maintaining road infrastructure affects the environment by the emissions of increasing utilization of HCT (high-capacity transportation), that is, larger and heavier vehicles, affecting the backhauling transportation and the efficiency of road-network combinations. Environmental efficiency is an important metric which is used for comparisons among technological alternatives employed in the utilization of energy derived from both fossil and renewable resources. Based on the enterprise resource planning (ERP) data (2018−2020), CO2 emissions of increasing HCT were calculated for a forest industry corporation. The reduction in average fuel consumption (ml t × km−1), between 52% and 70% in backhauling transportation, was 18.88%. In... [more]

The presented paper aims to study the influence of mineral diesel fuel and synthetic Gas-To-Liquid fuel (GTL) on the injection process, fuel flow conditions, and cavitation formation in a modern common-rail injector. First, the influence on injection characteristics was studied experimentally using an injection system test bench, and numerically using the one-dimensional computational program. Afterward, the influence of fuel properties on internal fuel flow was studied numerically using a computational program. The flow inside the injector was considered as multiphase flow and was calculated through unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations using a Eulerian−Eulerian two-fluid approach. Finally, the influence of in-cylinder back pressure on the internal nozzle flow was studied at three distinctive back pressures. The obtained numerical results for injection characteristics show good agreement with the experimental ones. The results of 3D simulations indicate that differences in... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, hybrid models, PHANN, photovoltaic forecasting, Social Network Optimization
Accurate photovoltaic (PV) prediction has a very positive effect on many problems that power grids can face when there is a high penetration of variable energy sources. This problem can be addressed with computational intelligence algorithms such as neural networks and Evolutionary Optimization. The purpose of this article is to analyze three different hybridizations between physical models and artificial neural networks: the first hybridization combines neural networks with the output of the five-parameter physical model of a photovoltaic module in which the parameters are obtained from a datasheet. In the second hybridization, the parameters are obtained from a matching procedure with historical data exploiting Social Network Optimization. Finally, the third hybridization is PHANN, in which clear sky irradiation is used as an input. These three hybrid methods are compared with two physical approaches and simple neural network-based forecasting. The results show that the hybridization... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breeding blanket, contact force, discrete element method, packing structure, porosity distribution, tritium breeder pebble bed
In the tritium breeding blanket of nuclear fusion reactors, the heat transfer behavior and thermal-mechanical response of the tritium breeder pebble bed are affected by the inner packing structure, which is crucial for the design and optimization of a reliable pebble bed in tritium breeding blanket. Thus, the effect of pebble size distribution and fixed wall effect on packing structure and contact force in the poly-disperse pebble bed were investigated by numerical simulation. The results show that pebble size distribution has a significant influence on the inner packing structure of pebble bed. With the increase of the dispersion of pebble size, the average porosity and the average coordination number of the poly-disperse pebble bed gradually decrease. Due to the influence of the fixed wall, the porosity distribution of the pebble bed shows an obvious wall effect. For poly-disperse pebble bed, the influenced region of the wall effect gradually decreases with the increase of the disper... [more]

Jens Nørkær Sørensen, Gunner Christian Larsen
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost modeling, levelized cost of energy, offshore wind farms, resource assessment
A numerical framework for determining the available wind power and associated costs related to the development of large-scale offshore wind farms is presented. The idea is to develop a fast and robust minimal prediction model, which with a limited number of easy accessible input variables can determine the annual energy output and associated costs for a specified offshore wind farm. The utilized approach combines an energy production model for offshore-located wind farms with an associated cost model that only demands global input parameters, such as wind turbine rotor diameter, nameplate capacity, area of the wind farm, number of turbines, water depth, and mean wind speed Weibull parameters for the site. The cost model includes expressions for the most essential wind farm cost elements—such as costs of wind turbines, support structures, cables and electrical substations, as well as costs of operation and maintenance—as function of rotor size, interspatial distance between the wind tur... Keywords: air conditioning, climate change, cost-benefit analysis, developing countries, impact assessment, life cycle assessment
The global demand for air conditioners (ACs) has more than tripled since 1990, with 1.6 billion units currently in use. With the rapid economic and population growth of countries located in the hottest parts in the world, this trend is likely to continue in the future. The aim of this study was to show the benefits of introducing air conditioners with different materials or different technologies such as inverters with high energy-saving performance on the environment and human health in Indonesia. To evaluate the environmental impacts of the different technologies, a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) of air conditioners was conducted using the life-cycle impact assessment method based on endpoint modeling (LIME3). As expected, the use stage has the largest global warming potential (GWP), representing more than 90% of the impact, whereas copper and nickel have the most important impact in terms of resource consumption (about 50%). We found that the impacts are heavily depende... [more]

Keywords: fracture flow, fracture network propagation, induced seismicity, poroelastic deformation
An important technical issue in the enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is the process of fracture shear and dilation, fracture network propagation and induced seismicity. EGS development requires an ability to reliably predict the fracture network’s permeability evolution. Laboratory and field studies such as EGS Collab and Utah FORGE, and modeling simulations provide valuable lessons for successful commercial EGS design. In this work we present a modeling analysis of EGS Collab Testbed Experiment 1 (May 24, Stim-II ≅ 164 Notch) and interpret the stimulation results in relation to the creation of a fracture network. In doing so, we use an improved 3D discrete fracture network model coupled with a 3D thermo-poroelastic finite element model (FEM) which can consider fracture network evolution and induced seismicity. A dual-scale semi-deterministic fracture network is generated by combining data from image logs, foliations/micro-fractures, and core. The natural fracture properties (e.g., len... [more]

Bożena Gajdzik, Włodzimierz Sroka
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: investment, Poland, resource intensity, steel industry
Resource intensity is a measure of the resources needed for the production, processing and disposal of good or services. Its level decides on the costs the companies have to bear both for production and for environmental protection, which in turn have a crucial importance for their competitiveness. Given these facts, our study analyses the issues of resource intensity in the Polish steel industry in correlation to investments made, and more specifically, to the impact of investments on the consumption of energy media used during steel production. Its key element is the development of econometric models presenting the impact of investments on resource consumption in steel production in Poland. Electricity and coke consumption were analysed according to manufacturing installation. The research was carried out on the basis of statistical data for the period of 2004−2018. The obtained findings confirmed the impact of the increase in investment on the decrease in the resource intensity in s... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: black roofs, cleaning operations, cool roofs, dust accumulations, energy savings, green roofs, reflective roofing materials, short-wave solar reflectivity
Cool roofs use reflective materials or coatings to reflect a portion of the incident solar radiation. This results in a lowering the surface temperature of the cool roof compared to black roofs, and thus helps reduce the cooling energy loads during the summer season. The research reported in this paper was conducted to assess experimentally and numerically the performance of cool and black roofs that were subjected to the hot, humid and dusty climate of Jubail Industrial City (JIC). This paper focused on characterizing one of the important properties of reflective coating material (RCM), which is its solar reflectivity. In this study, the effect of dust/dirt accumulation on the solar reflectivity of the RCM was investigated at different exposure times to the natural weathering conditions of JIC. The test results showed that dust and dirt can significantly contribute in reducing the solar reflectivity of the RCM. As such, a number of cleaning processes were conducted on the surface of t... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arc detection, current collection quality, Hilbert transform, pantograph-catenary system, power quality disturbance, predictive maintenance, rail transportation, railway electrical networks
Electric arcing due to contact interruption between the pantograph and the overhead contact line in electrified railway networks is an important and unwanted phenomenon. Arcing events are short-term power quality disturbances that produce significant electromagnetic disturbances both conducted and radiated as well as increased degradation on contact wire and contact strip of the pantograph. Early-stage detection can prevent further deterioration of the current collection quality, reduce excessive wear in the pantograph-catenary system, and mitigate failure of the pantograph contact strip. This paper presents a novel arc detection method for DC railway networks. The method quantifies the rate-of-change of the instantaneous phase of the oscillating pantograph current signal during an arc occurrence through the Hilbert transform. Application of the method to practical pantograph current data measurements, demonstrates that phase derivative is a useful parameter for detecting and localizin... [more]

Keywords: field test, hot summer and warm winter zone, passive energy-saving design, residential buildings
In China, a surging urbanization highlights the significance of building energy conservation. However, most building energy-saving schemes are designed solely in compliance with prescriptive codes and lack consideration of the local situations, resulting in an unsatisfactory effect and a waste of funds. Moreover, the actual effect of the design has yet to be thoroughly verified through field tests. In this study, a method of modifying conventional building energy-saving design based on research into the local climate and residents’ living habits was proposed, and residential buildings in Panzhihua, China were selected for trial. Further, the modification scheme was implemented in an actual project with its effect verified by field tests. Research grasps the precise climate features of Panzhihua, which was previously not provided, and concludes that Panzhihua is a hot summer and warm winter zone. Accordingly, the original internal insulation was canceled, and the shading performance of... [more]

Keywords: damped AC method, partial discharge, very low frequency method
When detecting the presence of partial discharge (PD) activity in the insulation system in high-voltage equipment, the excitation voltages at variable frequency have been widely used instead of power-frequency (50/60 Hz) sinusoidal voltage in order to reduce the charging power. This work reviews the relevant research on PD activity at very low frequency (VLF) method, including sinusoidal or cosine-rectangular voltage shape, and damped AC (DAC) method. Based on the research history and development status, some major PD characteristics, such as PD inception voltage (PDIV), PD amplitude, PD charge, PD phase-resolved pattern, and several hot issues, such as surface charge decay and statistical time lag, have been discussed. Moreover, the advantages, disadvantages, and applied conditions of two reviewed methods has been summarized. Finally, the prospects have been made on the main development trends of this research field in the future.

Keywords: continuous wavelet transformation, convolutional neural networks, knocking combustion, pressure trace, SI engines, time series
The phenomenon of knock is an abnormal combustion occurring in spark-ignition (SI) engines and forms a barrier that prevents an increase in thermal efficiency while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions. Since knocking combustion is highly stochastic, a cyclic analysis of in-cylinder pressure is necessary. In this study we propose an approach for efficient and robust detection and identification of knocking combustion in three different internal combustion engines. The proposed methodology includes a signal processing technique, called continuous wavelet transformation (CWT), which provides a simultaneous analysis of the in-cylinder pressure traces in the time and frequency domains with coefficients. These coefficients serve as input for a convolutional neural network (CNN) which extracts distinctive features and performs an image recognition task in order to distinguish between non-knock and knock. The results revealed the following: (i) The CWT delivered a stable and effective featur... [more]

Interturn Short-Circuit Fault Detection of a Five-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
Zhongyi Yang, Yiguang Chen
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Fault Detection, five-phase PMSM, generalized instantaneous reactive power, Hilbert transform, interturn short-circuit fault (ISCF)
Interturn short circuits are a common fault of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). This paper proposes a new method to detect the interturn short-circuit fault (ISCF) of a five-phase PMSM. The method first takes the command voltage and measured current of each phase winding as the original signal and then obtains the delay signal orthogonal to the original signal via Hilbert transform. Then, the generalized instantaneous reactive power of each phase can be calculated from the orthogonal voltage and current signals of each phase. Finally, the influence of the ISCF on the generalized instantaneous reactive power of each phase is analyzed under different working conditions. By comparing the difference in the generalized instantaneous reactive power of each phase, it can be determined which phase winding has the ISCF. The proposed method is verified by simulated and experimental results.
