Numerical Analysis of the Combustion Dynamics of Passively Controlled Jets Issuing from Polygonal Nozzles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: jet flames, LES, non-circular nozzles, turbulent mixing
In the present work, the combustion of vitiated hydrogen jets issuing from differently shaped nozzles is modelled using the LES method. We investigate the impact of nozzle cross-sectional geometries (circular, square, triangular, hexagonal and hexagram) and the jet Reynolds numbers (Re= 18,000, 20,000 and 23,600) on the flame lift-off height, its structure, the locations of the temperature maxima and species distributions. The triangular nozzle yields the highest mixing rate and therefore the fastest decay of axial velocity and the fastest growth of the average temperature along the flame axis. It was found that for the largest Re, the zone of intense mixing and the reaction zone occur in distinct regions, while for the lower Re, these regions combine into an indistinguishable zone. Finally, it is shown that the lift-off height of the flames and the mean temperature field are non-linearly correlated with Re and strongly dependent on the nozzle shape.

A Novel Design Portable Plugged-Type Soil Microbial Fuel Cell for Bioelectricity Generation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bacteria, green energy, MFC, paddy soil, plug
Soil microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are a promising cost-effective power source for on-demand electricity generation applications. So far, reported SMFC configurations are usually bulky and hard to setup. In this study, a low-cost portable plugged-type SMFC (PSMFC) was designed and fabricated for on-demand micropower generation. The PSMFC can be activated just by plugging into natural wet soil, which is easy to access in the natural condition. The PSMFC uses carbon-based electrodes for cost-effectiveness. After setting the PSMFC into the soil to activate, it started to produce electricity after 1 h and reached the power density of 7.3 mW/m2 after 48 h. The proposed PSMFC can potentially generate electricity for remote sensors or soil sensing systems.

The Effect of Insulation Characteristics on Thermal Instability in HVDC Extruded Cables
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric losses, HVDC cables, insulation losses, leakage current losses, temperature rise, thermal instability, thermal runaway, XLPE
This paper aims at studying the effect of cable characteristics on the thermal instability of 320 kV and 500 kV Cross-Linked Polyethylene XLPE-insulated high voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables buried in soil for different values of the applied voltages, by the means of sensitivity analysis of the insulation losses to the electrical conductivity coefficients of temperature and electric field, a and b. It also finds the value of dielectric loss coefficient βd for DC cables, which allows an analytical calculation of the temperature rise as a function of insulation losses and thermal resistances. A Matlab code is used to iteratively solve Maxwell’s equations and find the electric field distribution, the insulation losses and the temperature rise inside the insulation due to insulation losses of the cable subjected to load cycles according to CIGRÉ Technical Brochure 496. Thermal stability diagrams are found to study the thermal instability and its relationship with the cable ampacity. Th... [more]

Emissions Effects of Energy Storage for Frequency Regulation: Comparing Battery and Flywheel Storage to Natural Gas
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, emissions, flywheel, frequency regulation, Natural Gas
With an increase in renewable energy generation in the United States, there is a growing need for more frequency regulation to ensure the stability of the electric grid. Fast ramping natural gas plants are often used for frequency regulation, but this creates emissions associated with the burning of fossil fuels. Energy storage systems (ESSs), such as batteries and flywheels, provide an alternative frequency regulation service. However, the efficiency losses of charging and discharging a storage system cause additional electrical generation requirements and associated emissions. There is not a good understanding of these indirect emissions from charging and discharging ESSs in the literature, with most sources stating that ESSs for frequency regulation have lower emissions, without quantification of these emissions. We created a model to estimate three types of emissions (CO2, NOX, and SO2) from ESSs providing frequency regulation, and compare them to emissions from a natural gas plant... [more]

Investigating the Interaction Effects between Reservoir Deformation and Hydrate Dissociation in Hydrate-Bearing Sediment by Depressurization Method
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas production, natural gas hydrate, sediment deformation, THMC coupling model
Natural gas hydrate (NGH) has been widely focused on having great potential for alternative energy. Numerous studies on gas production from hydrate-bearing sediments have been conducted in both laboratory and field. Since the strength of hydrate-bearing sediments depends on the saturation of NGH, the decomposition of NGH may cause the failure of sediments, then leading to reservoir deformation and other geological hazards. Plenty of research has shown that the reservoir deformation caused by hydrate decomposition is considerable. In order to investigate this, the influence of sediment deformation on the production of NGH, a fully coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical (THMC) model is established in this study. The interaction effects between reservoir deformation and hydrate dissociation are discussed by comparing the simulation results of the mechanical coupling and uncoupled models on the laboratory scale. Results show that obvious differences in behaviors between gas and water produc... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Fault Detection, IEC 61850, IEC 61850 based DERs, isolation and restoration, microgrids, Self-healing microgrids
Due to the high penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) and emerging DER interconnection and interoperability requirements, fast and standardized information exchange is essential for stable, resilient, and reliable operations in microgrids. This paper proposes fast fault detection, isolation, and restoration (F-FDIR) for microgrid application with the IEC 61850 Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) communication considering the communication/system failure. GOOSE provides a mechanism for lightweight low latency peer-to-peer data exchange between devices, which reduces the restoration time compared to conventional client-server communication paradigm. The proposed mitigation method for the communication/system failure can find an available restoration scenario and reduce the overall process time. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed is designed and implemented with real time digital simulator, microgrid control system, and protection and control intelligent electric... [more]

A Game-Theoretic Analysis of Incentive Effects for Agribiomass Power Generation Supply Chain in China
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: agribiomass power generation, cooperative game, game-theoretic analysis, governmental incentive, noncooperative game, Supply Chain
The undersupplies of feedstock and high costs have hindered the development of China’s biomass power generation. In this paper, the noncooperative game, farmer−broker cooperative game, and broker−biomass power plant cooperative game, under government incentives, are constructed and analyzed. The optimal decision strategies and profits for these three cases are obtained, while numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are conducted, aiming at illustrating some specific features of the games. It is shown that the government plays a critical role in the development of utilizing agribiomass for power generation and can work better in cooperative games. In addition, both agribiomass supply quantity and profits of supply chain members are higher in cooperative than in noncooperative game. Meanwhile, farmers can get the maximum profit in the broker−biomass power plant cooperative game, while biomass power plant makes the maximum profit in the farmer−broker cooperative game. Fundamentals and Physical Principles for Drilled Cuttings Transport—Cuttings Bed Sedimentation and Erosion
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cuttings removal, drilling fluids, hole cleaning
The increasing necessity of challenging wellbore structures and drilling optimization for improved hole cuttings cleaning has been growing along time. As a result, operator companies have been researching and applying different hole cleaning techniques. Some of these are applied as traditional rules of thumb but are not always suitable for the new and up-coming challenges. This may result in inefficient hole cleaning, non-productive times, pipe stocking and low rate of penetration (ROP), among other problems. Here are presented some results and improvements for hole cleaning optimization obtained by the different research groups. The different authors mainly focus on specific cuttings transport parameters and sometimes combination of some of them. For this reason, there has not been a study that takes into account all of the different factors at the same time to accurately predict the cuttings bed height, formation and erosion, critical fluid velocity and properties and other key param... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: co-electrolysis, flexibility potential, renewable electricity, solid-oxide electrolysis, syngas production, system integration
Flexible, system-oriented operating strategies are becoming increasingly important in terms of achieving a climate-neutral energy system transformation. Solid-oxide electrolysis (SOEC) can play an important role in the production of green synthesis gas from renewable energy in the future. Therefore, it is important to investigate the extent to which SOEC can be used flexibly and which feedback effects and constraints must be taken into account. In this study, we derived a specific load profile from an energy turnaround scenario that supports the energy system. SOEC short-stacks were operated and we investigated the impact that the load profile has on electrical stack performance and stack degradation as well as the product gas composition by means of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The stacks could follow the grid-related requirement profiles of secondary control power and minute reserves very well with transition times of less than two minutes per 25% of relative power. Analysis of Corrosion of Hastelloy-N, Alloy X750, SS316 and SS304 in Molten Salt High-Temperature Environment
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: alloy X-750, corrosion resistance, Hastelloy-N, high temperature corrosion, MSR, stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316
Nickel superalloy Hastelloy-N, alloy X-750, stainless steel 316 (SS316), and stainless steel 304 (SS304) are among the alloys used in the construction of molten salt reactor (MSR). These alloys were analyzed for their corrosion resistance behavior in molten fluoride salt, a coolant used in MSR reactors with 46.5% LiF+ 11.5% NaF+ 42% KF. The corrosion tests were run at 700 °C for 100 h under the Ar cover gas. After corrosion, significant weight loss was observed in the alloy X750. Weight loss registered in SS316 and SS304 was also high. However, Hastelloy-N gained weight after exposure to molten salt corrosion. This could be attributed to electrochemical plating of corrosion products from other alloys on Hastelloy-N surface. SEM−energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) scans of cross-section of alloys revealed maximum corrosion damage to the depth of 250 µm in X750, in contrast to only 20 µm on Hastelloy-N. Keywords: bagasse, Biomass, corn stalks, enzymatic hydrolysis, pretreatment
Sugar cane bagasse and corn stalks are rich in lignocellulose, which can be degraded into monosaccharides through enzymatic hydrolysis. Appropriate pretreatment methods can effectively improve the efficiency of lignocellulose enzymatic hydrolysis. To enhance the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis, thread rolling pretreatment as a physical pretreatment was applied in this study. The influence of raw material meshes size after pretreatment was also taken as the research target. Specific surface area analysis, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-rays diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) were used for characterizations. The results showed that, the total monosaccharide recovery rates of the raw materials, 20−40 mesh, 40−60 mesh, and 60−80 mesh enzymolysis substrates were 17.6%, 34.58%, 37.94%, and 50.69%, respectively. To Represent Electric Vehicles in Electricity Systems Modelling—Aggregated Vehicle Representation vs. Individual Driving Profiles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy system modelling, method, smart charging, variability management, vehicle-to-grid
This study describes, applies, and compares three different approaches to integrate electric vehicles (EVs) in a cost-minimising electricity system investment model and a dispatch model. The approaches include both an aggregated vehicle representation and individual driving profiles of passenger EVs. The driving patterns of 426 randomly selected vehicles in Sweden were recorded between 30 and 73 days each and used as input to the electricity system model for the individual driving profiles. The main conclusion is that an aggregated vehicle representation gives similar results as when including individual driving profiles for most scenarios modelled. However, this study also concludes that it is important to represent the heterogeneity of individual driving profiles in electricity system optimisation models when: (i) charging infrastructure is limited to only the home location in regions with a high share of solar and wind power in the electricity system, and (ii) when addressing specia... Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: corrosion, degradation of coatings, energy biomass, hydrogen degradation, maintenance management, microbial corrosion
The aim of the study is to identify and determine the role of microbial degradation taking place in dusty deposits in potential threats (i.e., destruction of protective coatings and development of corrosion) to the means of transport in conditions of transshipment of energy biomass. This paper presents the results of research on the impact of powdery fractions of wood biomass and biomass obtained from oil plants in the degradation of paint coatings and corrosion processes. During the research, exposure to simulated port climate, OM, SEM, and EDS studies were used. It has been found that the presence of the fraction containing protein compounds and amino acids (e.g., dust of rapeseed meal) stimulates the growth of microorganisms whose metabolism products favour the destruction of protective coatings and the development of corrosion. Under the same conditions, the destruction of protective zinc coatings has been observed. It was found that already 14 days of exposure to oily biomass depo... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: detailed chemistry schemes, heat-loss modeling, jet-and-recirculation stabilized combustion, low-calorific combustion, numerical CFD analysis, OH* measurements, RANS modeling, syngas fuel
An atmospheric prototype burner is studied with numerical and experimental tools. The burner system is designed for operation in a hybrid power plant for decentralized energy conversion. In order to realize such a coupled system, a reliable combustion system has to be established. Numerical and experimental findings in the presented study demonstrate the capabilities of the novel burner system in suitable operation conditions. In this system, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is mounted upstream of the burner in the gas turbine system. The combination of both realizes a large operational flexibility with comparably high overall efficiency. Since the combustor is operated with SOFC off-gas, several challenges arise. Low calorific combustion needs careful burner design and numerical modeling, since the heat-loss mechanisms occur to be in the order of magnitude of thermal power output. Thus, different modeling strategies are discussed in the paper. The numerical studies are compared with exp... [more]

A Nonlinear Viscoelastic Model for the Yielding of Gelled Waxy Crude Oil
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fractal gels, nonlinear viscoelasticity, rheological model, waxy crude oil, yielding
We explore some rheological aspects of the yielding of gelled waxy crude oil on the basis of a fractal model for the structural description of the waxy gel and Marrucci’s model for the time evolution of the stress with mixed elastic and viscous effects. With some parameters of the model directly obtained from classic rheometry, and others by fitting the parameters to the experimental data of one shear-rate condition, the flow curves for another shear-rate condition are predicted. Both theoretical curves—the fitting and the predicted ones—share the basic features of the experimental ones. Comparison with results of Maxwell model shows that Marrucci’s model used here leads to much better results, as it incorporates nonlinear viscoelasticity of waxy crude gels in the stress evolution equation. The strain dependence of the elastic modulus also plays a relevant role on the prediction of the model, suggesting a double-network contribution for very small strain values. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energetic efficiency, Optimization, PV platform, solar tracker, virtual prototype
The article deals with the optimization of the azimuthal tracking mechanism for a photovoltaic (PV) platform, which uses linear actuators as actuation elements for both movements (diurnal and elevation). In the case of diurnal movement, where the platform’s angular field of orientation is large, a mechanism with a relatively simple structure is used for amplifying the actuator’s stroke and avoiding the risk of the system locking itself (by limiting the values of the transmission angle). The optimization study targets the mechanical device, the control device, and the bi-axial tracking program (embodied by the laws of motion in time for the platform’s diurnal and elevation angles) with the purpose of obtaining a high input of solar radiation, with a minimal energy consumption to achieve tracking. The study is carried out by using a virtual prototyping platform, which includes Computer Aided Design (CAD), Multi-Body Systems (MBS), and Design for Control (DFC) computer applications. The m... Pore-Scale Simulations of CO2/Oil Flow Behavior in Heterogeneous Porous Media under Various Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2-EOR, heterogeneous porous media, immiscible flooding, miscible flooding, pore-scale simulation
Miscible and near-miscible flooding are used to improve the performance of carbon-dioxide-enhanced oil recovery in heterogeneous porous media. However, knowledge of the effects of heterogeneous pore structure on CO2/oil flow behavior under these two flooding conditions is insufficient. In this study, we construct pore-scale CO2/oil flooding models for various flooding methods and comparatively analyze CO2/oil flow behavior and oil recovery efficiency in heterogeneous porous media. The simulation results indicate that compared to immiscible flooding, near-miscible flooding can increase the CO2 sweep area to some extent, but it is still inefficient to displace oil in small pore throats. For miscible flooding, although CO2 still preferentially displaces oil through big throats, it may subsequently invade small pore throats. In order to substantially increase oil recovery efficiency, miscible flooding is the priority choice; however, the increase of CO2 diffusivity has little effect on oil... [more]

A numerical study was conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a supersonic second throat exhaust diffuser for high-altitude simulations. The numerical results were satisfactorily validated by the experimental results. A subscale diffuser using nitrogen was utilized to investigate starting pressure and pressure variation in the diffuser wall. Based on the validated numerical method, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the diffuser using burnt gas were evaluated by changing operating pressure and geometric shape. During normal diffuser operation without cooling, high-temperature regions of over 3000 K appeared, particularly near the wall and in the diffuser diverging section. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: deep neural network, deep reinforcement learning, demand response, distributed energy resources, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart grid
With the roll-out of smart meters and the increasing prevalence of distributed energy resources (DERs) at the residential level, end-users rely on home energy management systems (HEMSs) that can harness real-time data and employ artificial intelligence techniques to optimally manage the operation of different DERs, which are targeted toward minimizing the end-user’s energy bill. In this respect, the performance of the conventional model-based demand response (DR) management approach may deteriorate due to the inaccuracy of the employed DER operating models and the probabilistic modeling of uncertain parameters. To overcome the above drawbacks, this paper develops a novel real-time DR management strategy for a residential household based on the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) learning approach. This approach is model-free, and thus does not rely on knowledge of the distribution of uncertainties or the operating models and parameters of the DERs. It also enables lea... [more]

Keywords: cascaded-transformer multilevel inverter, energy balance operation, isolated multi-modular converter
Series connections of modules in cascaded multilevel converters are prone to power imbalances due to voltage differences on their DC side. When modules are connected to direct current (DC) sources, such as photovoltaic panels, the capability of withstanding power imbalances is crucial for generating the maximum power. In order to provide a possible solution for this requirement, this paper proposes a control strategy called Quadrature Voltage Compensation, which allows a wide range of power imbalances. The proposed control strategy regulates the power by introducing a circulating current between the arms and a phase angle in the output voltage. The impact of the circulating current and its effect on the phase voltage are studied. To highlight the features of the proposed strategy, an analytical model based on vector superposition is also described, demonstrating the strong capability of tolerating power differences. Modern indoor lighting faces the challenge of finding an appropriate balance between energy consumption, legal requirements, visual performance, and the circadian effectiveness of a spectrum. Multi-channel LED luminaires have the option of keeping image-forming metrics steady while varying the melanopic radiance through metamer spectra for non-visual purposes. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: frequency control, virtual synchronous machine, wind turbine
Frequency support capability is becoming an important requirement for wind turbines, as wind power is increasingly integrated into power systems. In this paper, a frequency controller is implemented and validated. Such a controller allows wind turbines to help regulate the system frequency automatically and includes virtual inertia to help limit the rate of change of frequency. Compared with other methods, the controller achieves satisfactory frequency support capability with considerable simplicity. The controller is added to the grid-side converter controls, together with cascaded inner loops, which enables wind turbines to operate in grid-forming mode with overcurrent protection.
