The Assessment of Autoignition of Modified Jet Fuels
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autoignition, fuel modification, indicator research, jet fuels, optical research
The condition of the natural environment, including breathable air, indicates that actions are to be taken related to the reduction of exhaust emissions from transport. One of the sectors of transport is aviation. The reduction of emissions is tightly related to the types of fuels in this sector of transport. In the paper, the authors propose the application of a new generation of jet fuels. A full exploration of the physicochemical properties of these fuels requires research under actual engine operation. The conducted research pertains to the autoignition of modified jet fuels in terms of the thermodynamic indicators and optical analyses of the early phase of flame development. The investigations were conducted using a Rapid Compression Expansion Machine with a simultaneous recording of images using a high-speed camera. Owing to this technique, the authors could assess the thermodynamic properties and analyze the early flame development processes. The investigations enabled the asses... [more]

The Transition of Dutch Social Housing Corporations to Sustainable Business Models for New Buildings and Retrofits
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: retrofit, social housing corporations, sustainable business models, transition
Social housing corporations play an important role in society as they provide affordable and good-quality housing for vulnerable citizens. Yet, the sector has to deal with the historical legacy of a high number of old and poorly insulated buildings. While research into the processes that drive or hinder business model innovation in this sector is scarce, this paper draws upon multiple qualitative case studies of social housing in the Netherlands to identify critical success factors for the transition to sustainable business models for new buildings and retrofits. Results show that there are four key attributes for a successful transition process: collaboration (both with supply chain partners as well as other social housing associations); continuous innovation; vision; and the role of the government (including subsidies and fiscal regulations). While economic performance was an important boundary condition, sustainability was not always seen as a strategic organizational objective, a f... [more]

Derivation of the Resonance Mechanism for Wireless Power Transfer Using Class-E Amplifier
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: class-E amplifier, GaN HEMT, wireless power transfer
In this study, we investigated the resonance mechanism of 6.78 MHz resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. The depletion mode of a gallium nitride high-electron-mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) was used to switch the states in a class-E amplifier circuit in this high frequency. The D-mode GaN HEMT without a body diode prevented current leakage from the resonant capacitor when the drain-source voltage became negative. The zero-voltage switching control was derived according to the waveform of the resonant voltage across the D-mode GaN HEMT without the use of body diode conduction. In this study, the effect of the resonant frequency and the duty cycle on the resonance mechanism was derived to achieve the highest WPT efficiency. The result shows that the power transfer efficiency (PTE) is higher than 80% in a range of 40 cm transfer distance, and the power delivered to load (PDL) is measured for different distances. It is also possible to cover different applications related to batt... [more]

Potassium Hydroxyde Pre-Treatment Enhances Methane Yield from Giant Reed (Arundo donax L.)
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: alkaline pre-treatment, anaerobic digestion, Arundo donax L., biogas, giant reed, lignocellulosic biomass, methane
The biogas production through the anaerobic digestion (AD) of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) biomass has received increasing attention. However, due to the presence of lignin, a low CH4 yield can be obtained. Aiming to improve the CH4 yield from giant reed biomass, the effectiveness of a thermo-chemical pre-treatment based on KOH was evaluated in this paper. The usefulness of a washing step before the AD was also assessed. The pre-treatment led to a specific CH4 yield up to 232 mL CH4 g−1 VS which was 21% higher than that from untreated biomass; the maximum daily rate of production was improved by 42%, AD duration was reduced by 10%, and CH4 concentration in the biogas was increased by 23%. On the contrary, the washing step did not improve the AD process. Besides, washing away the liquid fraction led to biomass losses, reducing the overall CH4 production. The use of a KOH-based pre-treatment appears as a good option for enhancing the AD of giant reed, also presenting potential environmen... [more]

Attitudes on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a Mitigation Technology within the UNFCCC
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BECCS, Carbon Capture, CCS, CCUS, DAC, DACCS, mitigation, negative emissions, NETs, side-events, UNFCCC
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technology for mitigating emissions from large point-source industries. In addition to the primary role of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, CCS forms the basis for two large-scale negative emissions technologies by coupling geologic CO2 storage with bioenergy (BECCS) and direct air carbon capture (DACCS). Despite its inclusion within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), CCS has been largely unsupported by UNFCCC delegates because of its association with fossil fuels. We evaluate data from surveys given since 2015 to UNFCCC delegates at the Conference of the Parties (COPs) to ascertain how attitudes about bioenergy, BECCS, and CCS may be changing within the UNFCCC. The results show a positive change in attitudes over time for both fossil CCS and BECCS. Using a unique data analysis method, we ascertain that, in some instances, popularity of BECCS increased due to an increased acceptance of CCS despite lo... [more]

Combined Aggregated Sampling Stochastic Dynamic Programming and Simulation-Optimization to Derive Operation Rules for Large-Scale Hydropower System
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, hydropower, operation rule, sampling stochastic dynamic programming, simulation-optimization
Simulation-optimization methods are often used to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower reservoir systems. The solution of the simulation-optimization models is complex and time-consuming, for many interconnected variables need to be optimized, and the objective functions need to be computed through simulation in many periods. Since global solutions are seldom obtained, the initial solutions are important to the solution quality. In this paper, a two-stage method is proposed to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower systems. In the first stage, the optimal operation model is simplified and solved using sampling stochastic dynamic programming (SSDP). In the second stage, the optimal operation model is solved by using a genetic algorithm, taking the SSDP solution as an individual in the initial population. The proposed method is applied to a hydropower system in Southwest China, composed of cascaded reservoir systems of Hongshui River, Lancang River, and Wu River.... [more]

Application of Computer Graphics Flow Visualization Methods in Vortex Rope Investigations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, computer graphics, vortex criteria, vortex rope
Computer graphics visualization techniques for application on data from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the vortex rope, a phenomenon present in hydraulic turbines operating in off-design conditions, were devised. This included not only objects for visualization (what to visualize) but also methods of the visualization itself (how to do it). By means of advanced methods based particularly on volume rendering of Eulerian fields in combination with Lagrangian objects, various phenomena were captured, such as the motion of the vortex rope or the backflow zone. The data came from simulations using a scale-resolving hybrid turbulence model, the Stress-Blended Eddy Simulation. In such detailed simulations and other applications involving complex three-dimensional structures, proper visualization methods are needed to leverage the content captured in the resultant data.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: phase shifting transformer, power system modeling, protection system analysis
Complex phase shifting transformer protection scheme and complexity of the object itself created a need to use simulation programs for their analysis. Often phase shifting transformer (PST) are modeled as a simplified series impedance and quadrature voltage source which cannot be used for power system protection analysis, especially in a transient condition. Therefore, the procedure of building realistic PST model was presented by using available transformer models with calculation of their parameters including interconnections between units. Paper consist calculations based on case study with symmetrical dual-core PST example. Additionally, theoretical background of PST principle, operation, and their impact of power system protection were introduced with numerus examples of PST model verification.

Interpretation of Gas/Water Relative Permeability of Coal Using the Hybrid Bayesian-Assisted History Matching: New Insights
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: assisted history matching, Bayesian adaptive direct search, coalbed methane, JBN method, relative permeability, unsteady-state flooding tests
The relative permeability of coal to gas and water exerts a profound influence on fluid transport in coal seams in both primary and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery processes where multiphase flow occurs. Unsteady-state core-flooding tests interpreted by the Johnson−Bossler−Naumann (JBN) method are commonly used to obtain the relative permeability of coal. However, the JBN method fails to capture multiple gas−water−coal interaction mechanisms, which inevitably results in inaccurate estimations of relative permeability. This paper proposes an improved assisted history matching framework using the Bayesian adaptive direct search (BADS) algorithm to interpret the relative permeability of coal from unsteady-state flooding test data. The validation results show that the BADS algorithm is significantly faster than previous algorithms in terms of convergence speed. The proposed method can accurately reproduce the true relative permeability curves without a presumption of the endpoint... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ceramic coating, mathematical model, solar absorber, vanadium extraction
The vanadium-titanium black ceramic (VTBC) coating on all-ceramic solar collectors has both high absorptance (0.94) and high emissivity (90%). However, the thermal conductivity of ceramic is very low (1.256 W/mK). To improve the heat collection efficiency of VTBC solar collectors, this paper establishes a mathematical model based on the energy-conservation relationships under steady-state conditions and creates a corresponding computer program. Key parameters for VTBC solar collectors include the heat-removal factor, effective transmittance-absorptance product for the absorber, total heat loss coefficient, etc. Then, via experimental testing, this study proposes a reference model for domestic VTBC solar collectors in a cold location (η = 0.89 − 2.20Tm*). Last, this work analyzes the influences of fin design and transparent cover design on VTBC solar collectors individually, using the created computer program. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: metaheuristic optimization algorithm, particle swarm algorithm, photovoltaic cell, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
As carriers of green energy, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and photovoltaic (PV) cells are complex and nonlinear multivariate systems. For simulation analysis, optimization control, efficacy prediction, and fault diagnosis, it is crucial to rapidly and accurately establish reliability modules and extract parameters from the system modules. This study employed three types of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms to find the optimal parameters of two energy models by minimizing the sum squared errors (SSE) and roots mean squared errors (RMSE). The three algorithms are inertia weight PSO, constriction PSO, and momentum PSO. The obtained calculation results of these three algorithms were compared with those obtained using algorithms from other relevant studies. This study revealed that the use of momentum PSO enables rapid convergence (under 30 convergence times) and the most accurate modeling and yields the most stable parameter extraction (SSE of PEMFC is 2.0656, RM... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: “in situ” assessment, gulf of California, Midriff archipelago, modeling of tidal energy flows
The Gulf of California has many regions of potential tidal-stream energy that have been identified and characterized using in-situ measurements and numerical ocean models. The Midriff Islands region has received particular attention due to its increased current speeds and high kinetic energy. This increase in energy can be seen in the formation of internal wave packets propagating for several hundred kilometers. Here we present a brief description of internal wave measurements travel towards the Northern Gulf and explore energy generation sites. In this paper we characterize the tidal inflow and outflow that passes throughout the Midriff Islands in the central part of the Gulf. We use a three-dimensional numerical ocean model that adequately reproduces the tidal flow and the increase in speed and kinetic energy between the islands. The current flow structure shows the highest velocity cores near the shore and far from the bottom. During the rising tide, the maximum current flow (~0.6 m... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hybrid distribution transformer (HT), low voltage (LV) substation, reactive power (RP) compensation, voltage regulation
The high penetration of new device technologies, such as Electric Vehicles (EV), and Distributed Generation (DG) in Distribution Networks (DNs) has risen new consumption requirements. In this context, it becomes crucial to implement a flexible, functional and fast responsive management of the voltage level and Reactive Power (RP) in the DN. The latest improvements in the Solid State Switches (SSS) field demonstrate they can be used as a Power Electronic (PE) converter. In particular, they have been shown to be capable of operating synchronously with transformers, making the Hybrid Distribution Transformer (HT) concept a potential and cost-effective solution to various DN control issues. In this paper, a HT-based approach consisting of augmenting the conventional Low Voltage (LV) transformer with a fractionally rated PE converter for regulating and controlling the RP in the last mile of the DN is proposed. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: co-simulation, dynamic model, performance analysis, pure electric loader
The electrification of loader designs can utilise several power motor types. Hence, this study investigates the operational performance of pure electric-powered loaders matched with three types of motors. Firstly, for the ZL08 loader, it is proposed that a pure electric-powered loader structure adopts two motors to drive the walking and hydraulic systems separately. Secondly, the dynamic parameters of the two motors were matched, and then, a joint vehicle dynamics model of the control system, the Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) module and the material Discrete Element Method (DEM) module, was established. Finally, the performance of the walking system with three motors was tested by inserting three materials and using accelerating and climbing methods. The operating performance of the hydraulic system was tested by shovelling and unloading three materials. Results show that when inserting difficult materials, the loader’s walking system with switched reluctance motors is 9.74−21.2% deeper th... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: patents, sleeve valves, two-stroke
At the beginning of the 20th century the operational issues of the Otto engine had not been fully resolved. The work presented here seeks to chronicle the development of one of the alternative design pathways, namely the replacement for the gas exchange mechanism of the more conventional poppet valve arrangement with that of a sleeve valve. There have been several successful engines built with these devices, which have a number of attractive features superior to poppet valves. This review moves from the initial work of Charles Knight, Peter Burt, and James McCollum, in the first decade of the 20th century, through the work of others to develop a two-stroke version of the sleeve-valve engine, which climaxed in the construction of one of the most powerful piston aeroengines ever built, the Rolls-Royce Crecy. After that period of high activity in the 1940s, there have been limited further developments. The patent efforts changed over time from design of two-stroke sleeve-drive mechanisms... [more]

Keywords: composite material, metal loss defect, pipeline, repair system
Pipe corrosion is a frequent phenomenon, and if repairs are delayed it could lead to environmental damage. Drilling activities can expand only when sufficient surface transportation capacity for the produced fluids exists and thus good maintenance of the transportation system is important. Furthermore, the technology presented herein can be easily upgraded as a repair solution for surface casing section below the casing head, which have been repeatedly reported as being highly corroded for older wells. This paper presents the results of the research work carried out by the authors in order to evaluate the design methods of the modern composite material systems used to repair steel pipes carrying hydrocarbons upon which local metal loss defects (generated by corrosion and/or erosion processes) have been detected. Fixed Transmission Charges Based on the Degree of Network Utilization
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: “postage stamp” method, electricity market, fixed cost allocation, incremental power flow method, power flow decomposition, power flow tracing method, proportional sharing principle, superposition principle, transmission pricing
The core objective of transmission tariffs is the recovery of costs related to the transport of electricity. A usual component of a tariff is a fixed charge that covers the costs of the network infrastructure. As many customers use the power grid, the rate of this charge should reflect, as closely as possible, the actual costs of supplying energy to the individual consumers. These costs result from which network elements have been used in delivering the electricity, and to what extent these elements have been used. Therefore, the fixed transmission rates should depend on the degree of network utilization. This article investigates definitions of the degree of network utilization based on the active power flow. To calculate the degree of network utilization, the flow of electricity on a branch must be decomposed into the streams flowing to individual customers. For this decomposition, two methods are examined: a power flow tracing method, based on the proportional sharing principle, and... [more]

The Influence of External Load on the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cells
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bioelectricity generation, external resistance, microbial fuel cell
In this work, the effect of the external load on the current and power generation, as well as on the pollutant removal by microbial fuel cells (MFCs), has been studied by step-wise modifying the external load. The load changes included a direct scan, in which the external resistance was increased from 120 Ω to 3300 Ω, and a subsequent reverse scan, in which the external resistance was decreased back to 120 Ω. The reduction in the current, experienced when increasing the external resistance, was maintained even in the reverse scan when the external resistance was step-wise decreased. Regarding the power exerted, when the external resistance was increased below the value of the internal resistance, an enhancement in the power exerted was observed. However, when operating near the value of the internal resistance, a stable power exerted of about 1.6 µW was reached. These current and power responses can be explained by the change in population distribution, which shifts to a more fermentat... [more]

GLSDC Based Parameter Estimation Algorithm for a PMSM Model
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: GLSDC, parameter estimation, PMSM
In this study, a GLSDC (Gaussian Least Squares Differential Correction) based parameter estimation algorithm is used to identify a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) model. In this method, a nonlinear model is assumed to be the correct representation of the underlying state dynamics and the output signals are assumed to be measured in a noisy environment. Using noisy input and output signals, parameters that constitute the coefficients of the nonlinear state and input signal terms are to be estimated using the state transition matrix which is computed by the numerical means that are detailed. Since a GLSDC algorithm requires correct initial state value, this term is also estimated in addition to the unknown coefficients whose bounds are assumed to be known, which is mostly the case in the industrial applications. The batch input and output signals are used to iteratively estimate the parameter set before and after the convergence, and to recover the filtered state trajectories.... [more]

A Study on Core Skew Considering Manufacturability of Double-Layer Spoke-Type PMSM
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, spoke type PMSM, THD, torque ripple
The spoke-type permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), which is a general ferrite magnetic flux-concentrated motor, has a low portion of reluctance torque at the total torque magnitude. Therefore, as a way to increase the reluctance torque, there is a double-layer spoke-type PMSM that can maximize the difference in inductance between the d-axis and the q-axis. However, in the double-layer spoke-type PMSM, cogging torque, torque ripple, and total harmonic distortion (THD) increase with reluctance torque, which is the main cause of vibration and noise. In this paper, a method is proposed that provides the same effect as skew without dividing stages of the permanent magnet by dividing the core of the rotor into two types so that it is easy to manufacture according to the number of stages, unlike extant skew methods. Based on the method, the reduction in cogging torque and THD was verified by finite element analysis (FEA).

Propylene is one of the world’s most important basic olefin raw material used in the production of a vast array of polymers and other chemicals. The need for high purity grade of propylene is essential and traditionally achieved by the very energy-intensive cryogenic separation. In this study, a pillared inorganic anion SIF62− was used as a highly selective C3H4 due to the square grid pyrazine-based structure. Single gas adsorption revealed a very high C3H4 uptake value (3.32, 3.12, 2.97 and 2.43 mmol·g−1 at 300, 320, 340 and 360 K, respectively). The values for propylene for the same temperatures were 2.73, 2.64, 2.31 and 1.84 mmol·g−1, respectively. Experimental results were obtained for the two gases fitted using Langmuir and Toth models.
